@randdodraggo asked: Hey, Mun, did you see the latest chapter and the difference between the fan translation and the official one? The one Bakugo said?
Tumblr media
OOC: Unfortunately, I have. Sorry I got to this late.
I'm convinced the official VIZ translator (Caleb) has some vendetta against shippers on Twitter or just dislikes certain characters in general. Rather than translate the actual dialogue, he feels the need to toss in additional "spice" to be "different" from the fan translations.
I find that VIZ has an ongoing history of fucking up translations for manga (i.e. please see the original Inuyasha serial run where they printed the entire manga BACKWARDS and renamed all the attacks to names that barely made sense to the original meaning). As much as I'd LOVE to support the official release of anime/manga, if I know I'm getting a lesser version of a translation, it feels like a rip-off and blatant disrespect to the manga-ka.
Case in point-- Caleb often translates Bakugou's dialogue to either play down or outright remove his character development.
Just in last week's chapter, when he talks to Edgeshot, he openly shows how grateful he was to the pro hero for keeping him alive. He says "Thank you for keeping me alive, senpai." That's all he said.
For no reason at all, Caleb added on, "yeah, yeah, got it" when he was talking to Edgeshot. It just cheapens the genuine gratitude he has for Edgeshot in the original Japanese.
In regards to the END of that chapter, it was such an obvious callback to Katsuki's earlier line to Izuku when they brought him back to the U.A. He said "We're here to step in when you can't handle things on your own." Caleb's translation doesn't even sound like natural speaking. Katsuki was clearly referring to only himself and the pronoun was translated to "we" randomly. I'm not sure what "and then some!" even means.
I don't think it's too much to ask that the translator keeps true to Horikoshi's original work. Honestly, I trust fan translations more than the official ones. That's pretty sad. It should be the other way around.

Is Tousen prescriptivist or descriptivist? As a librarian, he would certainly have strong opinions about it. For that matter, do any other characters have a notable stance on the topic?
For those of you who are not friends with linguistics nerds:
It is two truths largely universally acknowledged that 1. Words and Gramatical conventions mean specific things and 2. Language changes over time. Perscriptivisim is the perspective that WE HAVE RULES ABOUT LANGUAGE, DAMMIT. They have a point- for a lot of things we use words for like legal documents, manufacturing instructions, and medical research- Precision is KEY. But it isn't very flexible and doesn't account for some of the nuances of language. Descriptivism is a stance that is a bit more akin to your stoner buddy going "What even ARE words?". They have a point- language is, at it's core, a massive cooperative game of make-believe. But it'd not very helpful when you need to be clear about your meaning.
This can make editing... difficult.
Kaname had strong opinions on it when he was a librarian that have only gotten more insane and intense since becoming Editor-In-Chief of the Gotei-13's newspaper, but true to fashion, has managed to pick a position that pisses off everyone.
He's a Topical Perscriptivist.
There is a Meticulously updated and catalogued database of shifts in word usage, slang and novel grammatical structures. It's an incredible academic resource, and a helpful living translation document in the Gotei-13 where the last time the division policies got updated was in the Meji era. He's working on a mobile version for the newfangled 'smart' communicators. It's an incredibly useful tool!
Kaname pisses people off by using it to be a persnickety little shit about the grammatical rules of linguistic conventions invented last week.
"You know, if you want to annoy him back, you can try hosing your boss back with the constant stream of madness from the internet!" Keigo suggested to Shuuhei once. "There's a fun new term for throwing something real hard that could use an offi- You're kidding."
Shuuhei shook his head, handing the Official Conjugation of Yeet Document from the 9th division's Database of Current Linguistics to Keigo. "The Captain had this drawn up within an hour of the term hitting the 10th Division reports page. It's got a regular Perfect Tense, but Irregular and different Imperative, Continuous and Conditional tenses for maximum confusion."
"...That motherfucker." Keigo groaned, looking over the conjugation tables. "...I yeet, He yeets, we yote, I had yeeted, she had been yote, they will have been yet- Its so stupid but it makes so much intuitive sense! It's the perfect joke conjugation for a joke word!"
"That's why he's The Captain." Shuuhei nodded.
"I thought he was captain because he beat the crap out of Mugurama-san for the job? Twice?"
"Listen here you little shit-"

Digimon Liberator Novel
[read on the official website] DEBUG.1-1 [Yuuki] - DEBUG.1-2 [HEAVY METAL PLAY] - DEBUG.2-1 [Winr] - DEBUG.2-2 [GOOD GAME]
First spoiler free, then more detailed including spoilers under cut
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So the first 2 chapters of the Digimon liberator novel dropped last week! We don't exactly know how frequent it'll update, but most likely not as regular as the comic. First impressions on the main characters, I really like them. I think they are fun and interesting enough to drive the story. They don't feel like exact copies of previous characters, and make me exited for a fresh adventure!
As far as I could tell, the translation seems fairly good, but there was a mistranslation of a card effect. However the translation of TCG card effects can be a bit tricky, and the translators might not have known the official english wording. They also show the respective card right there, so it's easy to see what the effect should be, but it might be confusing to people who weren't already familiar with the cards.
Nevertheless I'm optimistic and looking forward to read more!
So now for a bit more detail
First off, I think they way they incorporate the player's tamer cards is really smart. A player get's their own blank tamer card, and can obtain various effects to add to it within the game, to customize their own tamer card to their play style. Nice! This way it doesn't feel like a weird 4th wall break for Yuuki to have a Yuuki Tamer card for example.
I really like Yuuki , immediately! She's fun, and she definitely has flaws and quirks to work on that'll make her interesting to watch grow. Her relationship with Impmon is nice too. Impmon is not exactly a serious character, but does want Yuuki to be a bit more serious, and recognize the weight of the situation. To an extend, Impmon wants Yuuki to take their partnership more serious in turn, I'd say. The way they talk to each other feels very familiar. You can tell they're close, not holding back complaining about the other. They bicker, but they also quickly drop the fight when needing to figure something out together.
Yuuki's Impmon, as most already know, get's a new evolution line: Punkmon, Loudmon, and HeavyMetaldramon. I love them! I like how it gives Yuuki and her Impmon more of an individual identity, than if they used a previously common Impmon line. The detail about Yuuki being a dancer, and vibing with the cool metal dragon is sweet too!
Tumblr media
Also, I wonder if that Altea character is this girl from the poster? It's interesting that Impmon is not a fan of her...
Tumblr media
Winr and FunBeemon's introduction was great too. Winr seems like a proud kid, without being feeling too stuck up. The story taking place after he's already known Yuuki for a year, really helps with his walls having started to come down already. I'm curious if his parents will be related to the in universe Digimon Franchise or Game Company in a way, or it they're just generic absent rich parents. Which, I don't think would take away from Winr's character if they are. I feel for him to want to escape from his home life into a virtual world. I love his relationship with FunBeemon. FunBeemon is very attentive to Winr's feelings, and cares a lot about him. And Winr doesn't get annoyed by it, but appreciates it, even though he doesn't quite know how to express it. The new evolutions for FunBeemon are also cool! I've like FunBeemon for a partner Digimon for a while, and I'm excited to see it finally happen!
I'm curious about Winr's real name too, assuming Winr is his username. Winr is a play on "winner", with his Japanese name サイキヨ Saikiyo being a play on 最強 (さいきょう) saikyou meaning "the best" or "the strongest". FunBeemon's nickname "Winnie" is キヨちゃん kiyo-chan in Japanese.
Tumblr media
For anyone who's interested: Japanese first person pronouns
Yuuki uses the japanese first person pronoun あたし atashi, which is quite feminine, but as being too over the top girly is sometimes seen as disruptive, atashi also has a do-as-I-please kinda vibe sometimes. For example, it's used by Yuffie from FFVII. The even more cute-girly atai in turn is often used in media by very strong-willed, rough women, such as Plumeria fom Pokémon Sun&Moon, or the Gerudo women from the Legend of Zelda games. It can also be played straight as super cute too thoug, like with Vivian from Paper Mario TTYD.
Impmon uses オレ ore, which is a strong, proud, often masculine pronoun. In formal situations it would be considered rude, but it's normal for guys to use in a casual setting. Very rarely it is also used by super tough women in media, such as Kumatora from Mother 3, or Big Mom from One Piece. Eiichiro Oda mentioned himself knowing women who use ore, but this is quite uncommon and likely a modern developement. You go girls! Impmon also uses it in katakana, which gives it a bit more emphasis.
Winr uses 僕 boku, which is quite common for young boys, or more soft spoken men in casual settings. In media it is also occasionally used by girl characters that have a "tomboy" vibe, but also sometimes by female singers in their songs.
FunBeemon uses 私 watashi, which is technically a polite neutral pronoun, but using it in a casual setting has a feminine connotation.
PS: Sorry this took so long, I'm still very sick, and writing coherent sentences with okay spelling is diffcult.

authors notes: in this fic the reader insert is the one that went to Wakanda- basically everything that Riri did was switched to Y/N. Riri is Y/N's roommate tho. i'm sleep deprived as fuck so the chances that my editing on this was shitty....pretty high. anyways hope you all enjoy and as usual, feedback is welcome and appreciated!
Tumblr media
Walking through the front door of your dorm after a long lab and lecture was nearly the biggest relief you'd felt all week. For the past month and a half you were struggling to keep up with the plethora of exams, projects, and papers your professors coincidentally assigned at the same time. Most nights you didn't even make it into bed before falling asleep, settling for your desk over a pile of textbooks and notes. The dark circles and bags under your eyes were borderline concerning, the burning sensation with every hour you were awake slightly more alarming. But all that was over now that you finished the last of your end of semester assignments, leaving you to relax while the rest of the students on your campus start what you just finished.
You lay sprawled out on your bed, one shoe missing while the other remain half tied on your foot. A heavy knock at your door jolted you awake from the light doze you started giving in to. Instead of answering it, you remain hanging off of your unmade bed and hoped the person would leave. When another knock returned your silence, you staggered to the door with one slipper on and your bonnet sliding off of your head.
Without much thought you yanked the door open, prepared to see your RA for the fourth time this month. Pure venom and annoyance in your voice as you hissed, "Celiwe girl- I swear if you're here about Riri's air fryer again imma knock the braces right off your tee-" Before you could get the last part of your sentence out you faltered at the sight before you. Instead of your officious resident assistant standing in front of you it was someone of an actual authoritative status.
Your eyes widened in shock and you blurted out, "Shuri?!" The queen pushed you lightly through your door and closed it behind her. There was a cheesy grin on her face as she replied, "Hi my love." In disbelief you squinted then rubbed your tired eyes aggressively, "Shuri?" The latter's smile fell and she asked in a more serious tone, "Y/N are you alright?" It was then that the surprise subsided and you quickly pulled off your bonnet and kicked your slipper off your foot before tugging your girlfriend into your arms.
The comforting scent of jasmine and vanilla filled your senses as you tucked your head into Shuri's neck. The two of you held each other silently for a moment, nothing needed to be said aloud to know how much you missed one another. After a moment the queen pulled away and pointed to the door, "Who did you think was at the door?" All the joy you just felt swept away at the mention of your resident assistant. You let out an annoyed scoff then answered, "My bitch ass RA. She been getting on Riri over her air fryer when literally everyone on this floor got one. It's like every time we be opening the door, Celiwe be standing right the fuck there ready to report us again." You rolled your eyes in annoyance then looked back at Shuri when she didn't reply. Your girlfriend was just standing there looking at you with an adoring smile, as if she didn't even hear a word you just said.
Narrowing your eyes at Shuri you asked, "What?" Instead of chiding you for your use of... explicative language like usual, she chuckled softly and walked towards you. Her lips ghosted yours as your back hit your mattress behind you and she murmured, "You've been practicing." It took a moment for you to understand but then you realized. Shuri noticed the way you pronounced the familiar click in your resident's assistant's name correctly, how her name rolled easily off your tongue. You lightly smiled and admitted, "I'm glad you noticed. That makes the $10 overdue fee on my library books worth it." Teaching yourself Xhosa when Shuri wasn't around to help you was a work in progress, but the adoring look and giddy smile she gave you were well worth it.
Shuri backed you into your desk slowly before she leaned forward and placed a heated kiss on your lips, immediately swiping her tongue against your bottom lip. You didn't have time to push her off before the door swung open and a loud shout interrupted the two of you, "YO Y/N LOOK WHO I FOUND IN THE PARKING LOT- oh shit." Shuri jumped off of you and you stood up while straightening our your t shirt. Your roommate stood in the doorway with Okoye standing behind her wearing a displeased look. Riri pointed to Shuri then beamed, "Yo what's good ya' highness." Your girlfriend winced in lingering embarrassment as she answered, "Hi Riri, it's nice to see you again." Shuri then glared at Okoye and whispered in Xhosa, "I thought I told you to stay in the car!" The General shot back sassily, "The girl found me and dragged me here!"
Riri looked between the two women and asked curiously, "Why are y'all here?" She realized her words when you smacked her leg and she added, "Not to be rude or nothing. But like, it's a Thursday evening." Shuri laughed in amusement and answered her question, "Well, I knew that Y/N had been really busy with her classes until today. I missed her as well, so I decided to come and visit." Riri frowned and looked at you, "Do this mean you missing game night?" Your own smile fell at the realization until Okoye asked you and Riri, "What is this about a game night?"
While Okoye stood stationary beside your front door, Shuri started making your bed and folding your clothes that covered it. You knew there was no point in trying to convince her otherwise, so you explained instead, "Basically Riri and I get together with our friends and we play board games. Tonight we got UNO." Riri leaned in with a serious look and narrowed eyes, "We take this very seriously. Emphasis on the very."
Shuri tucked the last corner of your comforter on your bed then looked over her shoulder at you both, "May I please join you all?" You and Riri agreed in unison, "Hell yeah!" You looked at your girlfriend then the General, "Bet, we got two more players." Okoye held up a finger and corrected you, "I never agreed to this." Riri sank back into her beanbag chair and said confidently, "You will." Okoye raised her eyebrows in mild disapproval, only to receive a toothy grin from the teenager across from her. You noticed the way the General just barely struggled to keep a stern face while eyes were on her, and how a smile tugged at the corners of her lips when everyone else's attention was elsewhere.
While Riri walked with Okoye across campus to pick up pizza for you and your friends, you stayed back in your room with Shuri. Curiously you asked, "How things been back home?" Your girlfriend answered simply, "Nothing much has changed. I have meetings with the elders, I work in my lab, and deal with whatever problems come up between both of those." The exhaustion was evident in her voice as she spoke and you decided to stop the conversation there. Although it had been months since Shuri was crowned queen, she was still recovering from everything that led and followed closely behind those events.
Your girlfriend remained suspiciously quiet as she helped you clear space in the middle of the room. The way she bit chewed on her lip and stared off into space every few minutes didn't go unnoticed.
Shuri was lost in her own thoughts when she felt one of your hands slip behind the small of her back. She tried to play it off but to no resolve when you asked, "What's on your mind?" The queen hesitated to answer but knew there was no use in lying so she shyly admitted, "I am just nervous to meet your friends." For a moment you laughed but that ceased when you realized she was being serious.
Many times you forgot that back in Wakanda, Shuri didn't have many people she knew that didn't work for her in some way. Since she was a child she was always the odd one out when it came to other kids in the kingdom. There weren't nearly as many child geniuses that doubled as royalty for her to befriend. In addition to the fact that other children were often intimidated by her presence or found her too different- she really only had T'Challa as a friend that didn't work to serve her. For years it didn't bother her but recently in the absence of her family she has realized how lonely things can be when you factor out her lab.
You reached up and cupped her face in your palm, "Baby..." There was a hint of a smile at the pet name and she leaned into your touch. With a gentle voice you assured her, "My friends are going to love you. There is nothing you need to worry about." Shuri stared back at you still slightly unconvinced and you explained, "It's only going to be MJ and this new friend she made, Peter. He's nice n' hella dorky. Oh and MJ's other friend Ned usually comes over- he's outta the country for one of his cousin's weddings or something." Shuri relaxed at that, especially having heard you mention MJ on numerous occasions during calls with her. The queen then quietly asked, "Do they know about..." You smiled and assured her gently, "No. Ri and I haven't said anything." In a teasing voice you dramatically bowed, "My panther." Shuri elbowed you in the side and playfully scoffed, Yeah yeah." With a small tug you guided Shuri back towards your face, a smug grin on your lips.
A harsh bang at the front door startled you two part just as you were about to kiss. A girl called out, "Aye! Y/N open up! It's MJ." A second voice added much quieter, "And Peter." You quickly placed a kiss on Shuri's lips then opened the door to see your best friend and her newer friend. Peter stepped aside and let MJ in first then followed behind her, both of them taking off their shoes and coats and putting them by the door. The queen watched silently from a distance as MJ slapped your palm then hooked her fingers with yours before you let go and bumped your fists against one another. It was a handshake Shuri had seen you do with both Riri and MJ, so it must've been some friend thing she assumed.
Peter stepped in front of her, unknowingly blocking her gaze in the process. He stuck out his hand with a friendly smile, "Shuri hey, Peter." Her brown eyes narrowed and her brows furrowed in slight confusion, "Something about you feels incredibly familiar. Do I know you?" Color drained from the young man's face and he nervously stammered, "Uh no we don't- I've never um- No." MJ bumped Peter's arm with a laugh, "Dude chill, be cool." She diverted her attention to Shuri and said, "Anyways, I'm MJ. It's cool to actually meet you after hearing Y/N mention you so often." A cheeky grin spread across Shuri's face and she asked, "Is that so, Sthandwa?" From across the room you threw a pillow at her head, just for her to catch it without sparing a glance. Shuri's cheeks grew warm when Peter and MJ shared a look then stared back at her for just a second too long.
The front door opened and Riri entered first with Okoye behind her carrying three pizza boxes and two bags with drinks and snacks on the each arm. MJ reached over and grabbed the pizzas from the General's forearms while Peter helped with the bags. In a hushed whisper you hissed, "Ri, I know you did not make her walk all the way back carrying all that stuff!" The shorter woman put her hand up to you and shot back, "No. She ain't let me carry nothing. I offered the entire way back but she stayed saying I ain't needa worry bout' it." Shuri overheard the conversation and eyed Okoye suspiciously, she knew the General was more fond of Riri than she let on all this time.
After everyone minus Okoye had gotten their plates and cups, you all settled around the table in the middle of the floor. The General remained on guard next to the door observing you and your friends silently. You shuffled the deck of UNO cards and started dealing out seven cards to each person.
The queen eyed the cards in her hand then raised a finger, "Pardon me but, how do we play?" Riri started to speak, "Okay so basically-" MJ cut in immediately, "No you don't get to explain the rules cause you never follow them. So allow me." She brushed a honey brown curl from her face and readjusted the beanie that slipped from her head. Just as she was about to speak, Peter interjected, "Technically you don't follow the rules either so I get to explain." MJ flipped him off in feign annoyance to which he covered with his hand as he correctly explained how to play the game.
Shuri listened to Peter with her brows furrowed in concentration, holding onto every word he spoke as if this was life or death. When he was done Shuri nodded in understanding, "I've got it, thank you." The young man looked up at Okoye and asked politely, "Are you sure you wouldn't like to join us?" The General declined once again, "I am sure, but thank you for the offer Peter." Riri's back faced Okoye but she said nonchalantly, "Come on Okoye, play with us it'll be fun." MJ and Shuri overlapped one another trying to get her to agree before you and Peter also joined in. The warrior eyed you all, clearly contemplating on accepting the offer while she was telling you all she needed to do her job.
Riri turned around and faced her with her best and softest puppy eyes she asked, "Please? For me? Just one game...pretty please?" Okoye sighed in defeat and caved, "Alright, I give." Shuri and you exchanged glances with one another as Okoye settled next to Riri and accepted the cards she was dealt.
***************************
The first half of the first round was getting more intense as everyone but Peter had less than three cards remaining. Riri glared at MJ from across the table and demanded, "You better not- Michelle Jones-Watson I swear you betta not skip my ass." A small smirk tugged at the corners of MJ's lips as she put down two skip cards, causing Peter and Riri to lose a turn. Okoye put down a wild card and changed the color, leading you to quickly slap down another on top of it. You opened your mouth to shout that you had uno but another voice cut you off before you could even speak, "UNO!"
You slowly turned your head to the side and whined, "That's not fair Shuri! You're not supposed to try to make me lose!" The queen shrugged and handed you two cards, "Well then you should have followed Peter's rules and yelled Uno before me." Riri muttered, "Damn that's cold." MJ pointed to your girlfriend and snorted, "I knew there was a reason I liked her."
The game continued for three more rounds with Okoye winning the first, Shuri the second, and you the third. It was down to the final round and Riri, Peter, MJ and Okoye were already finished. Thus, leaving you and Shuri to battle it out against each other. Without having to see you knew that Shuri had two +4 cards in her hands. Throughout the entire round she held onto them, saving them for later meaning she could stack them and win against you. There was a mischievous glint in her eye as she stared at you cheekily.
You shook your head and refused, "No don't do it. Shuri please- Baby-" Okoye watched with a devious smile, "No Shuri. Do it." Riri added on harshly, "If you don't do it imma do it for you. Finish her!" Without context this entire thing would sound totally alarming, but all you could do was try to convince her to not go through with her idea. Once more you begged, "Isithandwa please." Shuri slammed her slammed her hand on the table and shouted victoriously, "UNO OUT!!!!"
A burst of cards flew into the air causing Riri and MJ to exclaim, "Oh shit!" Peter stepped back in surprise and Okoye smiled to herself in slight amusement at the scene before her. You looked down at the table you'd been playing on that was no completely collapsed and demolished in a pile of crushed metal and plastic on the floor. The LEDs that hung on the ceiling flickered, one of them going completely out a second later. Shuri felt her palms get sweaty as she nervously glanced at everyone who was now staring at her. MJ pointed to Shuri then Okoye with a squinted gaze and an open mouth as if she was going to ask a question. She then turned to Peter and Riri and stuck her hand out, "$20 for you and Ned. $10 for you, Ri. I win." The two groaned and grabbed their wallets and you asked, "What y'all talking bout?"
MJ proudly accepted the money and explained, "I told them Shuri was the Black Panther but they were adamant that I was wrong. So we made a bet, and look at that. I won." She fanned herself with her money then tucked it into her shirt with a laugh. You asked in slight annoyance, "Y'all made a bet on my girlfriend?" MJ laughed in delight, "And look what it got me." While you were annoyed Shuri and Okoye shook their heads in slight amusement at the situation.
***************************************
It was around 1 AM and your friends had left for the night after helping you clean up. Riri decided she was going to stay the night at her other friend's dorm to give you and Shuri time alone. Okoye insisted on walking Riri to her friend's place, and told the queen she'd be back in the morning. Now leaving the two of you were curled up in your bed rambling on about whatever crossed your mind.
You rested your ear against Shuri's chest and let your hand rest on her toned abdomen beneath the night shirt you gave her. The light touches of your warm fingers against her stomach made her heart race, and not in the way it used to. Slowly she pulled your hand from beneath her top and tugged it all the way down, completely covering her skin. Ever since the battle with Namor she was much more reserved when it came to exposing her abdomen and back. Although the spear wound healed, there was still a very noticeable section of disfigured, shiny raised flesh against Shuri's back and abdomen.
The small sigh that fell past your lips prompted Shuri to change the subject while she still could, "Today was very lovely. Thank you for letting me meet your friends." You accepted the subject change and answered, "Of course my love. I knew they would like you....Speaking of, what's with Okoye and Riri?" Shuri let out a laugh and explained with a smile, "I think Riri reminds General of her younger sister. She would be around our age now if I recall correctly. The General doesn't mention her family much less those she's lost. But, her personality was very similar to Riri's. That grew the soft spot in her heart , at least that's what I believe."
You hummed sleepily in response and Shuri felt your hand loosen on hers. She stared down at you and asked, "Are you falling asleep on me, sthandwa sam?" You refused in a soft mumble, "Nah of course not, baby. I'm just resting my eyes." Shuri didn't even bother trying to tease you because you were dozed off moments after finishing your sentence. Her muscular arms wrapped tighter around your body and she kissed the top of your head, "Ulale kakuhle."

DISCLAIMERS
* This is cross-posted from AO3, link here.
* This is a murder/mystery story. Like so, it contains depictions of violence that some readers may find disturbing.
* Classic Nanami and Gojo shenanigans will ensue. This is my copium.
* This fanfic is mostly built on original characters that are plot-centric (we need ppl to kill and to be questioned in a murder/mystery story, amiright?), though Nanami is the protagonist. There won't be any romance/smut/fluff/ship involved, but in case you don't like OC's at all, this story probably isn't suited for you.
* I wrote this in the most faithful way I could to JJK Canon and events, with the intention you could read this as an actual one-off light novel from the series (even inspired the writing on the translation from the official light novels). I hope you enjoy.
********************************
Chapter 1
Traveling alone became a common occurrence in Nanami's life ever since Haibara's death. More common still after his promotion — turning into a first-grade jujutsu sorcerer in his third year came with some perks, like a raise, for instance. But it also meant he would be frequently dealing with complex missions by himself. To fill up time, he was reading a pocket version of "The Devotion of Suspect X" by Keigo Higashino, as he drank a small and well brewed cup of coffee.
As Nanami approached his destination, he closed the book and started to mentally review the details of this mission. He anticipated it should take around a week for completion at most.
Around the city of Odate there had been 7 deaths, all containing traces of cursed energy. All involving poison. The presence of a cursed spirit was not out of the question, but considering the way those people died, a curse user was most likely. If that was the case, the curse user should be captured and taken in for questioning.
His phone rang. It was Yaga.
"Hello." he said, as he accepted the call.
"Nanami, be sure to report as soon as you get there, and report to me daily." Yaga replied.
"I will. Has something happened?"
"No, but those that sent this mission our way are very keen on accompanying every step taken." The contempt Yaga tried to hide in his voice was pretty clear.
"Fine. Let me know when and if Gojo is coming my way." The thought of meeting Satoru with his whimsical personality during a mission made Nanami involuntarily sigh.
Nanami was on his way to Odate because Jujutsu High's first choice, Satoru Gojo, was off on another mission that took longer than expected. This had been disclosed to Nanami right from the start. He would be there up until Gojo Satoru got to Odate or until he just finished the job by himself, whatever happened first.
He couldn't wrap his mind around the fact that they wanted to send Gojo, a special-grade sorcerer, on a mission suited for a first-grade, though. But dutiful as he was, Nanami simply did not spend his time questioning. Orders were orders, after all.
"About that… Gojo requested for you to work with him if you still haven't finished the job when he gets there.”
Nanami was annoyed.
"Why?"
"Who knows. He's always acting on a whim. Just accompany him. I have been told this is an important job, and you're the responsible one."
Nanami was annoyed, times two.
"Fine."
Getting “punished” with more work for being a good jujutsu sorcerer was the kind of thing that happened to him regularly. Not so different from a normal job. Nanami sighed and ended the call. There was now a pretty good incentive to get things done as fast as he could, and it didn't involve (just) overtime.
***
As the train came to a stop, the doors opened, letting a cold breeze seep in. I should get to the hotel and leave this luggage before I go out investigating, Nanami thought to himself, before stepping out and making his way onto the exit from the train station.
There were few to no taxis so early in the morning, so he just decided to walk. It wasn't terribly far, and it gave him the opportunity to look around the city for anything out of the ordinary along the way.
There were many snow sculptures by the roadside, and some ice figures resembling the Akita dog breed. At the end of February, Odate had many winter festivities, with a lot of Akita-dog related decor and souvenirs.
He had nothing against cold weather, but preferred the beach, ever so slightly.
Nanami picked up his phone and sent Yaga a text that said "I'm here. On my way to the hotel".
"Ok" Yaga replied instantly.
They must really be on his case, he thought, as it was out of character for Yaga to reply so fast. He usually had more things to deal with as the new Jujutsu High principal.
After an uneventful walk, Nanami got to the hotel and was greeted by a woman at the main desk.
"Good morning. My name is Yoko. How can I help you, sir?" She asked politely.
"I have a reservation."
"Perfectly. I need your full name."
"Nanami Kento."
The lady typed quietly on the keyboard, and around two minutes passed.
"Sorry, our systems are kind of slow today."
Nanami said nothing and just waited.
"Hey, Mr. Kento... Be careful."
That grabbed his attention. It was clearly not a threat, and the lady was visibly concerned, even though she tried to hide it.
"There have been some people dying these past few weeks. Somehow it hasn't made national news, and I can tell you're not from here. I mean, new face and all. So... Be careful, ok?"
"I appreciate your conce-"
"It was the majo!" someone shouted from the inside office. The lady got startled, and instantly irritated.
"Grandma, please stop with these silly superstitions!"
There were heavy and steady footsteps, and shortly after, an elderly woman came from the back office, raising a finger and pointing towards Nanami and Yoko.
"They are not superstitions. Hear me out! The majo, the witch, she did it!"
Yoko sighed and felt her third migraine of the week paying her a visit. Wednesday had barely started.
Nanami looked at her, as if asking for further explanation about what the old woman was talking about. She put on a cordial smile and started to speak.
"My grandmother has old superstitions about a woman that lives just outside the city. Her parents went missing when she and her brother were young, and they sell herbs and things like that. There is not much to it, but people in the city have had that long held superstition against their family for a while now."
Her smiling face and calm voice did not match the angry energy she was emanating.
The old woman interjected once again.
"Her parents went missing because she is a witch, and I bet you, these people dying must be related to all of that!"
The migraine had settled in.
"What 'all of that', grandma?"
The old lady gestured vaguely with her hands in the air, as if there was some obvious fact that everybody was unaware of.
The computer emitted a sound, and Yoko promptly grabbed a key and gave it to Nanami.
"Here. Room 409. If there is anything you need, you can just dial #903 for room service."
“Thank you. Excuse me.” he replied. As he started walking towards the stairs, it was possible to hear Yoko chastising her grandmother about scaring travelers and people she did not know. The words were followed by loud footsteps into the main office and a door being slammed.
As Nanami got to his room, he started texting Yaga.
NK: I'm at the hotel. There is a local superstition around a person whom they call “a witch”. I've been told this person deals with herbs and medicinal plants, so they probably also have poisonous ones. I will be checking this out before going elsewhere.
MY: Let me know if you find anything. Also, talk to Ijichi, he will assist you researching this.
After settling in, Nanami got out of the hotel and started walking down the street, intent on questioning people about it. He failed to notice the man following him from afar.
***
It was already two in the afternoon, and he figured he might as well stop and eat something for lunch. After all, expenses were completely paid for.
As Nanami went inside the restaurant, he went over mentally the information he got about the family.
The Yamadas were a pretty old family in that region, and most lived northwest of Odate. After the disappearance of some of the family's members, mainly a couple with two children, most relatives just left the city. Aside from that, there was not much else to be said about them. Nanami had already sent Ijichi all the details he was able to gather and asked for research as soon as possible.
His phone lit up. It was Ijichi.
KI: Hey, Nanami, I found some interesting things.
NK: Tell me.
KI: So, the Yamadas were a family of jujutsu sorcerers, it seems.
Nanami felt that was definitely suspicious, to say the least.
KI: Apparently, they had little to no ties to Master Tengen or anything. They were all from that region of Odate, but most of the members have since disbanded throughout Japan in the last 10 years. I couldn't find much in the archives, especially about cursed techniques that run in the family.
NK: I see. Let me know if you find anything else.
 KI: No problem.
***
After some asking around, Nanami finally got to Yamada's “witch” house. It was pretty much in the middle of nowhere, and a snow-covered dirt road led the way there through the woods. As he was approaching from the forest quietly, he could see a lady with short black hair and a pretty thick coat putting some food bowls by the side of the house. He didn't see or sense anything particularly suspicious. The house was considerably big, having two separate floors and a very traditional Japanese ceiling for snowy weather.
Not long after she put the bowls, the lady whistled loudly. A fox came out of the snowy forest and started eating.
"There you go, Haru. Eat well!" she said, as she went inside the house.
Nanami was unsure if he should go question the woman, or if he should simply stay hidden and watch for anything strange. After all, this could be nothing, or she could be a sorcerer that would attack him on sight. He chose the latter, and sat down near some bushes as he paid attention to the house and its apparently sole resident.
From the frosty windows, he could see her in the kitchen, sitting idly while drinking something from a cup. Behind the house, there was a greenhouse with many pots of plants and other greeneries planted directly on the soil.
This will take a long time, Nanami figured, feeling disheartened for having to work late that day. Resigned, he used his flip phone to take a picture of the house and waited. He got to see the fox finish its food and go back into the woods.
Around an hour later, there were some scratching sounds that he could not really see what was the source. The lady came out of the house, sprinting hastily to the other side, where Nanami was having a difficult time seeing her. He moved his position to try and see where she was headed, and walked quietly around from the opposite side in a semicircle, but she had vanished. The fox from earlier was there, looking directly at him.
He went into alert mode, but before he could do anything, Nanami felt somebody get behind him.
The sound of a gun being loaded could be heard, and he froze on the spot.
"Raise your hands. Who are you and why are you watching me?" a female voice asked.
"I'm someone investigating the deaths that have been occurring in Odate". He said, as he was lifting his hands and putting them on his head. Nanami figured there was not much of a point in lying. She didn't ask why he was there, but why he was watching her, so she probably had noticed it for a while. Also, if she was a curse user that wanted to harm him, she would've probably done so by now.
"Turn around."
He turned to face her.
She was pointing a small handgun at him, keeping her distance. Her green eyes seemed irritated. He could probably disarm her and further question the woman on the subject, but weighing his options, it felt more responsible to avoid conflict escalation.
"Look," she said, picking her words carefully. She sounded annoyed, but not scared. "I don't know what you've heard about me or this house, but I am not a witch, and I'll tell you what I already told the officer, I didn't kill anyone."
She examined his face.
"Why are you pointing a gun at me, then?" He asked.
"I'm a woman living alone in the woods, and a creep has been stalking me for god knows how long. Sorry if I chose to pull a gun first and ask questions later."
Both of them examined each other, and the air was tense. She seemed inclined to simply let him go, and his instinct was that she harbored no ill intent on hurting him out of anything other than self-defense. He decided to try to de-escalate the situation further.
"My name is Nanami Kento."
She was slightly taken aback, as she didn't expect him to present himself like that given the circumstances.
"I'm... Shiori. Yamada Shiori."
"I'd like to ask you some questions about these deaths. I'm a private investigator of sorts. Preferably without a firearm between us." Nanami said calmly.
She hesitated and examined him. Her instinct was that he was telling the truth. After a few seconds, her arm relaxed, and she put the gun down, then inside her coat.
"Ok. We can talk." Shiori said. "But I'm keeping the gun on me."
Nanami sighed as he lowered his arms. "Fair enough."
She pointed at the house. "And you go first."
They walked towards the house, and she unlocked the front door, letting him in. She indicated a table where he could sit, and pulled a chair for herself. Once both were seated, as Nanami was about to say something, she took a crystal ball from her other pocket.
"Here. Please hold this."
Nanami thought about it for a second, and held the ball in his hand. The small sphere started to glow blue after about 5 seconds. "Tsk", Shiori groaned, "Figures."
"Sorry, I don't understand."
"Where are you from? Kyoto?" She asked, grabbing the crystal from his hands. "Is this really about the deaths, or are you guys here to try to recruit me and my brother? He is away, just so you know."
Nanami was confused, and it must have shown.
"You're a jujutsu sorcerer, aren't you?" She asked. "Look." The crystal was glowing in her hands too. "This is my sort of 'jujutsu sorcerer detector'. The last time one of you came was a few years ago, so I'll just cut to the chase. I'm happy in the woods, and I don't want to go to Jujutsu High — I’m actually 18 now, and have just graduated. Please, leave me alone."
This was definitely not how Nanami expected this conversation to go, and he definitely did not expect to be dealing with cursed objects in Odate. After collecting his thoughts, Nanami started to speak.
"I'm here because of Jujutsu High, but I came from Tokyo on a mission regarding the deaths that have occurred recently. I questioned a few people and after some research, found that your family had sorcerers, and that you and your brother work with medicinal plants. Given the cause of those deaths was poisoning, I came to your house for further investigation." He answered bluntly.
"I see." She put the crystal ball back inside her pocket. "You're not the first one to think that, though. A police officer was here a few days ago. Those town's people still hate us, even centuries later, simply for being Yamadas. But I truly had nothing to do with those deaths."
"I see." Nanami muttered the thought for a moment. "And do you have an innate cursed technique?" Cursed techniques in sorcerer's families that were passed through generations were common, even if those that involved poisoning their victims weren't that common.
She was a little surprised with the question. "Well, it has nothing to do with poison, I can tell you that much. I can show you, but it can't be done inside the house."
"Why?"
"Because I still want to have a roof over my head. Come." She pointed to the door, and they went outside. Behind the house, there were plenty of wide holes in the ground just barely covered in snow, something he hadn't noticed earlier.
"Please, step back." She concentrated, put both hands together and said "cursed technique: melt grenade". Then, Shiori threw a small blue ball of cursed energy towards the holes. It exploded loudly, and made a hole around 2 feet deep, covered in a thick corrosive black substance.
"That's all?" Nanami asked. He waited for a response, but after a few seconds of silence, looked at her just to see Shiori falling to the ground. He started walking to her side offering assistance, but she was already sitting herself up, as if this was something the woman was accustomed to.
"Yes. That is all. I can only throw one or two of these before passing out." She stood up slowly. "So this is it. Unfortunately, there is not much I can do to help you." She had a surprisingly laid back approach, even if the circumstances they had met were somewhat odd.
Nanami sighed. At least this explained why she used a gun. Nevertheless, it was a dead end, after all.
"I was told you had a brother. Where is he?" He asked.
"My brother decided to do some traveling about a year ago. He went looking for our parents. I told him it was a bad idea, but he did it anyway. I don't know where he is currently." Shiori responded. "His name is Shiro. Our parents weren't very creative naming twins".
"Well, I won't occupy you any longer. I'll be on my way, then." Nanami said, as he bowed and started to leave.
"It's fine. But if you come by again, please, just knock on the door." Shiori responded with a half smile, putting her hands inside her pocket while she calmly walked back inside the house.
***
Back at the hotel, Nanami was on the phone talking to Yaga and giving him his report on the investigation. He informed Yaga about Ijichi's findings, and the conversation he had with Shiori.
"I see." Yaga said. "Keep an eye on her, though."
"Why?"
"Well, she has a cursed object we were not aware of. Doesn't seem like anything serious, but she could be hiding something."
"I understand." Nanami pondered for a moment. "She had some visitors from Jujutsu High years ago, more specifically from the Kyoto sister school, according to her."
"We usually scout families that have a history with jujutsu for potential students, but they don't always accept the invite." Yaga replied. "I didn't know she was one of the people we visited."
Nanami, still on the phone, walked towards the TV and turned it on. Local news had an urgent news broadcast on.
"Well, I imagine this is it for resting today." he said.
"I'll make the necessary calls. Go there now." Yaga replied.
He sat on the bed as he heard the reporter say police had just discovered a new body.
"I'm charging overtime fees."

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episode 1 Subbed (Finalized Re-Release)
(Original Finalized Release Post)
(Check out my Subbed!GX Stream Masterpost!)
TURN-1: Yugi's Successor
On his way to the Entrance Exams for the Duel Academia High School, Judai Yuki meets the legendary duelist Yugi Mutou and receives a card from him. Running late, Judai arrives at the venue and requests to take his exam, but Instructor Chronos sees Judai's exam as pointless given his lackluster score on the written exam. A duel begins between Judai and Chronos, and Chronos's rare Antique Gear Golem card uses its powerful 3000 ATK to damage Judai. His back against the wall, Judai hears the voice of a Monster--which turns out to belong to the card he received from Yugi, Winged Kuriboh...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
...I first posted the original finalized version of this episode almost 10 years ago??? Time is an illusion...
Fresh off the presses, it's a re-finalized version of my episode 1 subs! Well, probably re-re-re-re-finalized given my penchant for consistency and quality after previous revisions in the past 2-3 years, between fixing a handful of animation errors and terminology revisions... But this one merited a new post not so much for any updated translations, but because after casually skimming through this episode a while back, I noticed more animation errors, all card-related, that I'm now able to fix as I have for episodes since. You know the deal with this one, I'm sure; new kid on the block bumps into the Game King himself as he runs late for his Academia exam and manages to hit one of the school's best with his skills--literally. Fun opening episode to a fun series.
With this, I'm hoping to officially call this episode finalized for good, mainly because the kind of annoying thing about doing further revisions now is that, thanks to my solid-state drive (SSD) failing in October of 2022, I lost my personal copies of the episode scripts with the ATK/DEF counters I stylize and all, so it means I have to cut/stitch together different parts of the episode between the fixes I applied and the previous hardsub to account for the stat-counter subs or the eyecatch subs I started doing--since the softsub MKVs I release don't have those specific subs, they're easier to update. So I hopefully shouldn't be touching anything before episode 84 (the first one I finalized after getting a new drive) again and those can ideally be considered finalized for good. I'm hoping I can also give that title to 84-109 (where I currently am), but I'd like to think I didn't miss anything, lol.
Anyway, as mentioned, this revision applies several card-related fixes to the episode, some of which replicate fixes 4Kids did for the dub that I took a cue from. The fixes were added to the last DVDRip I released, subsequently made into a new softsub MKV, both of which will be up on NAC soon with the updated hardsub. List below the cut below as always, for the interested~ (Nice thing with some of these is that the frame rate was usually consistent, which meant that editing most panning shots and the occasional zoom shots were usually more of a breeze than later on, haha.)
Enjoy, folks; with this out of the way, since it's been about two weeks since 108 and 109 were finished up, I'll start setting up stuff for finalizing 110 while doing a little more TFSP work here/there before I fully start on 110 sometime next week. Stay tuned!
Fixes & Edits!
*The bolded edits below were applied back in 2021 and were added into the original release post; adding them here for completeness.
Applied a card back to an orange rectangle that was a face-down card during the panning shot of the Exam Duels going on over the episode’s opening narration as it fades to Chronos watching, repeating the edit as it pans back around again before fading to Manjoume and Ryou/Asuka watching.
As Misawa's exam proctor says that he stands no chance against his Super Defense Deck, the blank-art cards on his Disk for Big Shield Guardna and Gear Golem the Moving Fortress are reversed (the wider side for the effect box should be on the right). Fixed by applying proxies on them for a frame in AfterEffects, masking in the card outlines for blending, before taking that frame into Sony Vegas and zooming it out for the zoom shot here.
As Misawa's Ring of Destruction destroys Vorse Raider, we see the smoke rush onto the proctor's side of the field--and as we do, we can quickly see the blank-art Big Shield Guardna and Gear Golem cards on his Disk are again reversed before the smoke covers them. Fixed first in AfterEffects by slapping the proxies on for a frame, then in Vegas by taking that frame into and keyframing it to the rapid panning shot for most of its 17 frames. (Incidentally, throughout this scene, a different error happens in the dub, where aside from keeping the cards' orientation on the proctor's Disk incorrect, they also shuffle between Gear Golem and Big Shield Gardna being Normal or Effect Monsters--bit of an identity crisis!)
Fixed the error with Misawa’s LP dropping to zero after he uses Ring of Destruction to finish his Exam Duel; should have dropped to 1300.
After the proctor's LP drop to zero, he congratulates Misawa on his win, but the Gear Golem card on his Disk is reversed. Fixed first in AfterEffects by applying my proxy for a few frames, then taking one of those frames into Vegas to lightly keyframe as the shot pans left. (As a fun editing aside, I could tell 4Kids likely edited this in a similar way to how I did because as the cards fade out, you can briefly see some residue of Manjoume's hair outline on Big Shield Gardna's card which they didn't cover up; I definitely made sure I went the extra mile with redrawing the arena floor to cover that haha.)
After Misawa thanks the proctor, we zoom out to Manjoume in the stands as the Solid Vision fades out, but the cards under Big Shield Guardna and Gear Golem are--you guessed it--reversed. Fixed in a few ways, with the goal being to redo Big Shield Guardna and Gear Golem fading out--first, in Vegas, I took the first frame after they're gone and zoomed it into place at the start of the zoom, which let me cover up Gear Golem and most of Big Shield Guardna, but because Manjoume's hair moves upward as the shot zooms out, doing this means I couldn't fully cover it. So, I then took this first post-fadeout frame into Photoshop, where I used the Clone Tool to duplicate the arena floor and cover up the rest of Big Shield Guardna, reinserting it into Vegas and applying the zoom keyframes I did to the earlier frames to it--this lets my edited frame properly zoom out with the shot. Once done, I went into AfterEffects and applied the Big Shield and Gear Golem proxies onto the shot's first frame, masking them above the cards, then took that frame into Vegas to zoom out with the shot (rather easily, luckily, thanks to the frame rate note I mentioned up top), masked out Big Shield and Gear Golem and made them fade out into the edited frame in the layer below. With that set, all I had left was to go back and mask Manjoume's hair back above the edits for the duration of the fade, which was pretty easy, and boom goes the dynamite.
After Judai's duel with Chronos starts, he summons out Elemental Hero Featherman, but the card gets placed reversed on his Disk. Fixed in AfterEffects by applying a proxy first to one frame during the initial light zoom-out in the shot, taking the fixed frame into Vegas to re-zoom and hold once the zoom was over.
Chronos reacts to Featherman's summon, and as Featherman lands in front of Judai, his card on his Disk is reversed again, but also as the screen pans right, for a few frames as Judai moves to then place a card face-down, the shadow under his left leg goes from being more gray to black, turning back to gray once he stops moving. Fixed in AfterEffects first by placing a correctly facing proxy on his Disk for a frame, which I then took into Vegas and re-panned into the shot; while in Vegas, I then masked in the gray leg shadow over the black, masking in part of Featherman's ATK/DEF counter over the edit to blend it in.
In the next shot, as Judai ends his turn and their LP counters pop up, the Featherman card under him on the field is reversed; fixed in AfterEffects by slapping in a proxy, masking Featherman back in above it.
[cont below]
(10) After Chronos uses Confiscation, as he sends Judai's Revival of the Dead/Monster Reborn to his Cemetery, a few things happen: 1) the Featherman card on his field under him on the field is facing Chronos in Attack Mode, and 2) it's in the wrong Zone on Judai's Disk, as it should be in Monster Zone 3. I fixed this a few ways, first fixing the Featherman-on-field aspect in AfterEffects, applying a Defense-Mode proxy under Featherman and masking him and Judai back over it; I then took a cue from 4Kids and took the frame immediately after his Cemetery stops being lit up (but before Judai starts to move) and the frames as Judai moves into Photoshop, where I copied the empty Zone 1 into place over Zone 2, blending it in with some minor editing, and combined it with the AfterEffects edit I then did by applying a Featherman proxy in Defense Mode to Zone 3. After throwing everything into Vegas, I then applied some masking to a solid-white color layer to replicate the lights coming from Judai's Cemetery slot (helped by the fact that, luckily, the lights don't move). (The dub, for their part, only handled the Disk aspect, applying a weird light to cover up their Zone 2 edit while the Graveyard was lit up, leaving the Featherman card on the field as it originally was, OCG format and all lol.)
(11) Chronos activating Heavy Storm causes a huge storm of wind on the field, and as it gets to Judai's field, we see that the Defense-Mode Featherman card on the field under Featherman is reversed. Fixed first in AfterEffects, applying a proxy in a frame where most of the card was visible and masking Featherman back above it, then taking that frame into Vegas where I first redid the panning that happens, then I created a solid-color layer colored like the wind and applied some masking to replicate the gusts of wind that blow over the card.
(12) After Chronos summons his Wicked Lord Tokens and the crowd reacts, the smoke on the field from their summon simmers down, but the Featherman card under Featherman is reversed again. Fixed in AfterEffects by applying a correctly facing proxy and then masking Featherman back on top.
(13) After the commercial break, fixed the error with a Ra Yellow student’s miscolored jacket as he and the others watch Antique Gear Golem being summoned, thanks to thepalebride’s help.
(14) After crowd reaction to Antique Gear Golem being summoned, Asuka looks out onto the field and says she unfortunately heard the sound of the Academia's gates closing shut for Judai--as she does, we see that the blank-art card under Featherman is reversed. Fixed first in AfterEffects by applying a proxy under him in the first frame of the shot and masking him back on top, then taking that frame into Vegas where I re-panned it as the shot pans upward.
(15) After a brief blush, Judai summons out Winged Kuriboh, but he places it reversed on his Disk--and in the very next shot, it's correctly facing such that its name box is to our left. Fixed in AfterEffects by applying a proxy as he places it on his Disk, masking his fingers over it.
(16) After Antique Gear Golem destroys Winged Kuriboh and Judai tells Chronos that it reduces his damage to zero--to Asuka's shock--Judai takes Winged Kuriboh off his Disk and places it in his Cemetery slot in a quick shot, but the card is reversed again. Also fixed by 4Kids, I fixed this in AfterEffects by applying a proxy facing correctly in the frames in which Judai moves it.
(17) After summoning Flame Wingman, and after some taunting from Chronos, Judai activates an arena as heroic as he is in Skyscraper, but as he does so, Flame Wingman is missing from his Disk, as it should be in Zone 3. Fixed first in AfterEffects by applying a proxy (after finding the best-quality screenshot of Wingman's anime art and touching it up using an AI tool [I think I settled on Waifu]), fading it in as the scene fades from the Judai closeup to Judai about to swing his Disk around, and adding it as he does so, then applying a brightening and dimming as the Solid Vision lights go on around him. Once I did that, I went into Vegas and applied some masking on the little flickers that pop up over that zone to blend the edit in. (Side-Note: while dubifying the Skyscraper card in Judai's hand, 4Kids forgot to mask in his thumb over it, begging the question... how is Jaden holding that?)
(18) Fixed the blank Normal Monster card that should be Flame Wingman, both as Antique Gear Golem crashes onto Chronos and as the duel fades to an end.
One Piece Chapter 1086 - Initial Thoughts
Tumblr media
So we are back, one more for the road
Last week was madness, the Reverie once again proving that the Reverie has been the sleeper arc of the whole series - remember when we wanted to get straight to Wano? Those were the days
Still, now we move to the next, a bittersweet one with news that Oda will be taking the next 4 weeks off to get eye surgery for his astigmatism. We can only hope the surgeons take especial care of fixing Oda's eyes for this one, he needs them to keep up with the peak fiction
Spoilers for the Chapter, Support the Official Release also
Colour spread for today, rainy days and rainbows, appreciate Franky having a water spurt hairdo, plus he and Luffy about to splash the hell out of the crew (sans Zoro and Jinbe)
It seems we're continuing on the end point of the Reverie now
Also important that the Gorosei's translation is now 'Five Elder Planets', before it was 'Five Elder Stars' but given how we know that one was called Saturn it makes more sense
Feel bad for the Alabasta guardians; Igaram, Shaka and Pell trying to get to the bottom of things, when they know Cobra's died paired with Vivi being missing they're gonna beat themselves up pretty badly
But Vivi and Wapol have stowed away in the Aegis Kingdom's ship (also ironic since Aegis is a word for 'Shield', as it shields them from the WG)
Wapol's also in comms with Morgans, who agrees to feign looking for a scoop there to pick them up
The thought bubbles are deceptive, I think they're meant to be whispers since Wapol and Vivi are conversing, but Wapol doesn't want to breathe a word about what he saw, but Vivi won't leave because CP0 is after her
Wapol didn't even seem to tell her that Cobra's dead, since she wanted to contact him to ensure she's safe
Unsurprisingly, CP0 are also after Vivi and Sabo
Fuck off Stelly
FUCK OFF SPANDAM
Bonney stowed away on the 'Tajine Kingdom', apparently Tajine is a stew, and the aptness here is that Bonney is hungry
And of course Sabo, bleeding out, is on Lulusia's ship
Back at Marejois after the ships depart, the Gorosei discuss Sabo, they seem to have done a bit of a background check on him, since they know him to be surrounded by people of D.
Imu's on the call though, it seems the super Nuke that destroyed Lulusia was called 'the Mother Flame', and it was invented by Vegapunk
It seems the Gorosei were itching to try it out, but they were thinking uninhabited areas, nuking the deserts so to speak, but Imu decides upon Lulusia
No care for the human life, and the Gorosei don't seem to argue much about it
Imu's reason is vague though 'close proximity', close to what? or who? The Gorosei didn't know Sabo was there until after the order but you can't rule it out for Imu to know
And we finally get the Gorosei names, each are 'warrior gods' of a certain division
Saturn we already knew but his area is Defense Science, which explains why he is going to Egghead
Long beardo is Saint Markus Mars, Environmental Warrior God
Gorbachev is Saint Topman Valcurie, according to later notes it's Val or Wal, and the curie may be Marie Curie-based which sounds like Mercury, Justice Warrior God
Swordsman is Saint Ethan Baron V. Nusjuro...At first I thought Neptune but it's more 'Venus-juro', Finance Warrior God
And finally regular dude/manly stubble is Saint Shepard Ju Peter, Agriculture Warrior God
I admire the creativity but I can't deny it kinda annoys me that we're not consistent with the planet names, either name them all clearly (Shepard Jupiter, Ethan Baron Venus-Juro, Topman Mercury) or make them all partial (Markus Marrus and Jay Garcia Santa Nur)
Regardless, Saturn seems to be at the helm of the Mother's Flame, while the others justify using it as a means of 'instantly quelling protracted conflict'
Imu also wants Vivi, calling her by name, no honorifics. You were so uppity about Lily's full name Imu why not call her Princess Nefertari D. Vivi huh?
Coincidentally, Tajine and Aegis' kingdoms both went into rebellion, giving Akainu more of a headache
More Seraphim! We do have an S-Flamingo, S-Gecko and S-Crocodile
Seems Croco had that scar while he was young too, I wonder if S-Flamingo is like his adult self too
Very interested about S-Gecko mind you, because remember the Moria we know and don't quite like was the depression phase 'quit the chase but not the game' version, a younger more ambitious Moria may be more terrifying
I also wonder what fruit they gave S-Crocodile, since Green Blood can't do Logia or Zoan
But also, I thought Vegapunk only made four, S-Shark was in a room with the number 4 and he wasn't ready for combat yet, did the WG manage to replicate the process?
Also with these 3 Seraphim I can guess how most of the 4 kingdoms whose rebellions failed didn't succeed...
Back with Sabo we learn that the rebellion was waiting for the royals when they docked, which is no surprise given how they had the Peachbeard incident, so they welcomed Sabo pretty happily
He didn't correct them on the Cobra incident though, which is a bit cruel because sure you want them to still be filled with rebellion but you're also inviting them to kill any and all royals, even the good ones
Seems Moda the Milk Girl (who remember has family in the Navy, will be getting bad coffee again in the office now) and the other Lulusia survivors were in fact recruits for the army
Sabo was on a ship when the nuking happened
Sabo confirms that something man-made caused the destruction
Ivankov is all of us though, putting the threads together
The Imu of the original 20 was Saint Nerona Imu, Nerona sounds familiar, could be Verona the Italian city Shakespeare used, or maybe referencing Emperor Nero, but I can't quite put my finger on it
Ivankov also posits that Imu could be the same via 'an ability granting eternal youth', but he doesn't say Law's fruit, instead it's a book of Genesis with Santa strangling a Snake XD
Of course there is room for doubt, but Ivankov's reasoning is sound, the Gorosei would be outranked by a founder
They also suggest that Vegapunk made the weapon, which is true
But Dragon notes that Vegapunk would never make a killing machine, so perhaps he was manipulated into making something else that was reused as a weapon, which would explain the need to test it too
Ivankov keeps on speaking the fans' voice, what if the Mother's Flame is an Ancient Weapon, but Dragon does make the point of why use it now
All this stuff relaying what we've said does make me wonder if the truth is much wilder than this
Oh, a Celestial Dragon has been sentenced to death, sadly I can already guess who
The Dragons are feeling the lack of food but they still have cake so fuck them
Our first known God's Knights is introduced, with crescent hair/beard, he is the Judge for the Celestial Dragons, and former King of God Valley!
Saint Figarland Garling...Figarland...*looks up* OH! Oh...the family the Red Movie they thought Uta was from, and thus maybe Shanks, who was likely found on God Valley
He's a Saint which means he must've been a Celestial Dragon, but he doesn't dress like them, he's more like the Gorosei so perhaps he's between that rank
Yeah...Mjosgard has been sentenced to death, shot on a WG cross
'Anyone who protects scum is lower than the scum they protect' my guy that's not how the Naruto quote goes
Methinks that the Charloss incident is the cause of this, since Mjosgard approved his attack
Well we got a lot of information to whet ourselves for the month, finally catching up through all (well, most, we never saw what Shanks told the Gorosei) of the Reverie's incidents.
God's Knights have been introduced strongly via Garling, but as the commander we must expect him to be the top level, I wonder what level he's on in general, since 10+ straw hats plus allies won't be expected to fight 5 Gorosei plus Imu, perhaps the top God's Knight fights the God Usopp?
Getting all the Gorosei's names was unexpected, as well as the divisions they cover; Science, Law, Agriculture, Finance and Environment, all key areas, though Agriculture and Environment feel like they're hand in hand. It's interesting that they're considered gods as well, perhaps like the Five Wisdom Buddha (interestingly another name is the Five Jinas, Jina meaning 'Victor' or 'Conqueror'). While I'll have to live through the gripes with their names, it's interesting that they did in fact leave out the planet names of Earth, Neptune, Uranus and Pluto, the latter three of which are the namesakes of ancient weapons. Perhaps Imu is indeed the Earth, or just space itself (the void, or Mu), leaving Luffy the Sun and Blackbeard to potentially be the Moon.
Pour one for Mjosgard, the last reasonable Celestial Dragon we know of, joining T-Bone for the 'we wanted people of their profession to die but not them specifically' group. But in his place we get S-Flamingo, it'll be interesting how the new trio of Seraphim (which does complete the seven, unless the WG do intend to make more, I wonder if Green Blood and replicate Law's fruit could they still get eternal life?) will be utilized for the plot, they did mention the real Crocodile being on Empty Bluffs - Buggy's HQ - so are we gonna get a Croco-crossover? Or More o' Moria? Time will tell.
As for the Revolutionaries, I feel like this is reason for the Army to want to confront Vegapunk on Egghead (I feel like Vegapunk didn't know he was making something for an Ancient Weapon, if it is that, maybe it was a failed experiment to create a mini-sun as a fuel source, changed into a weapon, since Lilith did mention something like that as an ambition), but one wonders if Sabo will be compelled to join or to go in search of Vivi instead to deliver Cobra's message. I feel like Alabasta aren't privy to Vivi's status or the truth of Cobra's death so it might be a cold welcome for him.
I still maintain that I don't think we'll see Luffy and co next chapter, but it did feel like this was a good stopping point for Oda before things get even more out of hand, we still have loose threads dangling but we'll see what Oda's recovered, surgically fixed pair of eyes will set on us in July.
Honestly would love to see a top reader and bottom Kifaji similar w/the breeding/pregnancy kinks going on in the Mozus Trein fic, considering no one gives enough love to the bird man :,,,)
oh anon i love you for this ask 🩷
this is kifaji from twisted wonderland that anon is talking about:
Tumblr media
i've seen kifaji before but i didn't look into his character since he was in a jp server event and ngl i didn't know if i'd like him with him being based off of zazu from the lion king. i like/don't mind that zazu is stern, diplomatic, and loyal; however, i'm not the biggest fan of his pompous attitude, temper, and panic induced irritability
BUT with that being said, out of respect for a fellow appreciator of old men, i couldn't not look more into kifaji since you like him, and i was pleasantly surprised !! i don't really mind twst spoilers, especially when it comes to events, so i read a translation of the tamashina-mina event to get to know kifaji's character (which can be found here if anyone else is interested)
!! warning !! a couple of very minor spoilers ahead for that event, which aren't related to the event's plot
like i mentioned before, i was afraid that i would find his character annoying but i'm glad you made me challenge that assumption bc there were so many golden moments in the event, especially relating to kifaji's relationship to leona!!
i loved the fact that he taught leona chess and the fact that kid leona cried when he lost to kifaji. too adorable 🥹 and seeing his dynamic with leona and cheka made me think it is totally plausible that kifaji could have some major mommy potential and baby fever hehe. and i already know i'd have so much fun writing dialogue for him given what i read in the event
so anon, thanks to you, i will definitely be writing a fic for kifaji ! i don't officially take requests but i'd like to write something you'd like, since you brought this breedable bird man to my attention. i know you mentioned breeding kink and pregnancy kink, but i also know my trein fic had other kinks like emeto and piss so feel free to lmk if there's other kinks you want or not want included :))
also the fact that kifaji is a bird man sent me down a rabbit hole looking at mating habits of african red-billed hornbills, so i'm gonna ramble about that for a sec bc i was getting multiple fic ideas based off of what i found...
first of all, i was surprised i didn't know until now that only 3% of bird species have external sex organs. apparently while they're embryos they have a gene that stops cells from developing a penis. some scientists think this evolution happened bc females preferred males with smaller penises so they could have more control over who they'd pick as a mate (🗣️ make some noise for micro penises 🫶)
also fun side note: birds with a penis get an erection from lymphatic fluid instead of a rush of blood, which means they have trouble keeping an erection and only last a few seconds during copulation (veryyyy old man coded with the great combo of erectile dysfunction + low stamina + quick to cum)
birds without external sex organs just have an avian vent/cloaca that swells and sticks out during mating season. their copulation is referred to as a "cloacal kiss" bc they just rub their cloacas together to stimulate the flow of sperm into the female's cloaca. they only have one sex position where the male perches on top of the female who moves their feathers to one side to expose their cloaca (i can't be the only one that reads that and thinks of hairy t4t sex right?)
they have sex several times for about a week to ensure the sperm takes and, for african red-billed hornbills, the male finds the nest site
the rest of this is also specific to the african red-billed hornbills where they make a nest in a natural cavity and the female is blocked inside by a plaster of mud until the eggs hatch. they just leave a narrow opening for the male to put food into. (some inspo for some stuffing ideas) the females also moult while they're stuck inside and regrow their feathers back when they leave the nest after the hatching
so yeah that info is giving me lots of thoughts and ideas for the old bird man👍
Had a normal one with Finland's no. 1 newspaper last week.
They published a review about a new musical production where they claimed it was the musical's Finnish premiere (= suomenkielinen kantaesitys). I happened to know said musical had already been performed in another part of the country last summer, so I sent them a request to correct their mistake (= oikaisupyyntö).
I got a reply where they said that the critic who wrote the review disagrees with me, because the summer production was done by amateurs, so the new one is its Official Finnish Premiere, with an Official Finnish Translation. Ergo, there is nothing to correct.
I spent literal hours putting together a polite e-mail reply to that. In essence, I argued that no, it doesn't matter in the least if it was amateurs or animals in a barn that did it first, there's only one Finnish premiere and it's the first ever Finnish performance of a show. Like. I've never heard anyone argue this before, the dictionary of Finnish language agrees with me here, I have no idea why we're even talking about this. (Only I didn't put it like that, because hey, gotta stay polite. It was a rather difficult assignment.)
In the end, I won the argument and they published a correction, but damn, I'm still annoyed and very confused about this whole interaction. Just. What.
I've said it before and I'll say it again – I think I would be happier if Finnish media just stopped writing about musical theatre altogether, seeing how they clearly have no idea what they're talking about.
The whispers that the wind created as it collided with the petals at the gloomy dawn never seemed to take shape in the young man’s ears, more focused on his duty and survival than on the messages given to him. Two years had passed since that moment that changed his life so much but time passes fast for a short being, he could not afford to stop and observe details, listen to the least that was not killing. Sanemi Shinazugawa, pillar of the wind, he had taken a pupil, a tsuguko. Despite having been very against it at first, he taught him in a harsh and cruel way, just as the world would be with him if he decided to continue and he did so.
Now; being officially a member of the demon slayer corps, he took missions one after another without any rest.
Today the boy had returned to the estate of his superior, without waiting for him to be in the place he put his katana in the designated place and walked to the open area of the place. As he approached he could hear the fluid movement of a katana and others, when he arrived completely he could observe Sanemi training with great concentration so he did not pay attention to the pupil who simply bowed and greeted. Nothing, not even a look in his direction so he sat down and waited for the session to end. After a few hours Shinazugawa sheathed the katana and walked to the door next to the boy, the boy raised his head to look into the face of the other “Why don’t you train instead of sitting like a useless one for hours?” his voice rumbled all over the place with cold behavior, his gaze concentrated at the end of the corridor, his face somewhat twisted of discomfort causing his scars to be molded according to the tractions and contractions.
He just stared at him before nodding and starting to get up “Of course Shinazugawa-san” on the way to the previous point where the training had been done, both facing their backs, moving his head a little and making his jaw touch his shoulder he said to the pillar “Welcome”. The silence was the only thing that answered him before hearing steps walking away and finally ending up alone in the surroundings with a jester of disappointment drawn his own katana; he closed his eyes and took a lot of air. Again he could hear the whispers and laughter of the wind, how it got into his ears and tried to scream at him but the words did not make sense or that is what he thought, with one last breath he contracted all his muscles and prepared to move.
This was one of the many moments of interaction that both men had.
One night they ate without any words, the sound of cicadas or the movement of the leaves of the trees were the only thing that talked inside the room, the lamp illuminated what was necessary without hurting or forcing the eyes of those who were feeding, he swallowed the amount of food in his mouth and observed his pupil without expression indicating the emotion or feeling “Your skills are deplorable, this week I will have to train you again … What a waste of time” He gave a bite and watched the boy, he stopped chewing and nodded “Thanks Shinazugawa-san, I regret that my performance is not in your expectations” this annoyed the pillar who aggressively put the dishes on the floor “Do not apologize for being an incompetent” raised his voice enough to be heard outside if anyone was there but not too much to be considered a scream. The boy only nodded and continued eating, not that he accepted what he said or wanted him to continue with that thought, no, of course not, he knew very well that he was capable, that although there was always opportunity to learn and grow, it is not that he was in a place of first knowledge or practice as years ago. But in the end he was a pillar, someone more experienced, someone who had taken his body beyond the limit and had perfected his techniques, so he knew what he was saying, right? he just tried to harden him for the fatalities of his work but in the end he had an appreciation for him, even if it was minimal, didn’t he?
Their breaths had no pattern in their fighting movements, the grinding of swords a compass in the dance of the fight for the subjugation of the other, some screams were thrown by the pillar; about the talents and efforts of his pupil, of how they would kill him in the second that fought with a stronger demon, of how he was lucky to remain alive after all this time. Naturally the winner of the match was Sanemi, as the boy parted gasping trying to stabilize his breathing as well as his rhythm and heart pressure “you can’t even use full concentration breathing!” He rebuked “A pillar is your teacher and you don’t even seem to know the basics!” the boy bowed his head “Don’t lower your head when I’m talking to you, brat!” He clenched his jaw and looked up to meet Shinazugawa’s fury, his frowning and his eyes open to no more, his hands clenching the sheath of his weapon “If you follow this way I will get you out of the organization! Do you understand!?” His tone increasingly harsh and firm against him, he bowed in the form of respect “Of course master, it will not happen again, I promise” he returned to his original position and waited for the answer, for several seconds the tense air was static and everything seemed the same way, until he finally spoke “get out of here” he closed his eyes to not see the boy making it clear that if he tried to talk or engage in another interaction there would be punishment.
He bowed again for the last time before walking and leaving him alone. A knot in his throat pressed his insides, threatening to come out and reveal the emotions he felt. Apparently all his efforts had not borne fruit, maybe he was not good enough, so long with his training and not even a compliment, absolutely nothing but reproaches and reprimands, punishments and discouraging comments. Two years of his life trying to improve for the people, to help his and avoid heis suffering turned to dust and carried by the wind to nowhere.
But no person can endure such dealings for too long, at least not him, so the little relationship is further degraded over time. Now, 1 year later everyone was fighting with their lives to try to eradicate the evil that had therefore pressed them against the ground, enjoying their fear and pain.
His head was spinning as his body pricked every possible nerve, his sight barely made aware of the blurry figures in his immediacy, his ears seemed to bleed him, and his body moved involuntarily. What was he doing there?, What was happening?, For a few minutes he totally fainted until he regained it, when his eyelids opened slowly and saw the sky of dawn he felt some peace before his body forced him to take air choking through the puffs and coughed to calm his body, screams and metallic sounds finally reached his ears but did not move, he did not react, his body did not respond, that is why came to him, right, he was in a fight, a big and important fight. He had been one of the few who survived before the pillars ecountered Muzan... But now he had no idea what happened the instant he lay on the floor. When trying to move a wave of pain reached his brain almost making him lie down again but he had to do it, he had to stop and keep fighting even if it was the last thing he did, even if he did not know how he would but he would not give up, walking through the streets, with his hand hanging and the other one leaning against the wall he could see the commotion. He was quite surprised to see a great baby but quickly understood that that being was the first demon, Muzan Kibutsuji, he quickened his pace ignoring any pain or discomfort and instead anger, resentment and so on encouraged his walk.
He watched as Sanemi cut off his arm, reaching the side of the rock pillar and grabbed one of the Kakushi and began to pull with all the strength his body had, the sun and the light reaching every possible corner and burning the demon’s skin tearing apart pieces and then turning them into ash. The peaceful silence compared to the magnitude of the moment, all eyes focused on how slowly it faded until there was only the vestige of its horrors giving way to a new peace.
Days had passed since that miracle but now, there was a certain void, the space left by those who left a strong presence, a reminder that everything was real and that it always would be. His heart had been disrupted and broken just like his mind, he needed to think what he would do now that he no longer needed to fight for the lives of others and his own, everything seemed to be in a fog that prevented him from looking at the future.
In those same days Sanemi began to talk more with the boy but since he served, he wanted nothing to do with all this, less his teacher. The encounters were uncomfortable and forced, meaningless words but with intent on the part of Sanemi, sharp and one-syllable on the part of the pupil if he could still be called in such a way.
On a quiet morning the birds sang to wake everyone up just like the first rays of sun, the futon felt hard against the back of the boy and the cold of the floor was transferred to the fabrics so giving a jester he got up and accommodated the things in the room to go out and walk. At the end he opened the shoji with delicacy, the sound of his steps was dampened thanks to the socks he brought, he went to the common area with a piece of food, squatted and settled to sit with his legs crossed, he took a bite and closed his eyes. He heard and listened to the wind for the first time, the murmurs intertwined with his own thoughts traveling all over his brain, embracing each relief with delicacy.
Not long after he heard another person approaching, but he didn’t flinch until Sanemi spoke “Um, good morning,” he opened his eyes and simply moved his eyes so that his periphery could see it, he bit his tongue a little before speaking “Good morning” even though the tone of his voice did not reflect any emotion it was obvious that he was not so happy to see him or to talk to him. “You got up early” walked up to the boy and started to sit imitating the position of the boy who only nodded and finished eating “I… wanted to talk to you” started again hoping he was willing to listen but happened completely the opposite, the boy stood up and started making his way elsewhere, stopped for a moment “Why are you so kind to me now?” The words barely came out of his mouth but were sharp, not that he wanted to know the answer to his question but his mind could not help remembering all those times when Sanemi was very hard on him, even rude and arrogant, where he simply nodded and did what was asked of him without any complaints, so long trying to establish a relationship or some kind of contact that was more human.
Shinazugawa said a single syllable before boy interrupted “it’s just because you feel guilty, because you have nothing better to do” he frowned and squeezed his lips, some tears resting on the edges he continued walking until he reached another shoji, he grabbed the wood “I don’t want to see you again Shinazugawa-san, I’m leaving this place” Sanemi hearing all this stood up “It’s not what you think” swallowed saliva “(__) I’m sorry.” The boy squeezed the wood and looked at the floor “Me too” was the last thing he said before leaving the room and closing the shoji and to never returning to that place, to forget all the pain that for so long had contained in the depths of his being, letting the wind take away his sorrows and accompany him to a better place.
I'm particularly obsessed with poem 54 Wasureji no at the moment, credited to Mother of Honorary Grand Minister (which I am going to paste below because I am annoying)
a blog of an unfortunately frustrating night…
for your sanity just scroll past, also tldr.
After the Unrailed gang unveiled their official name of Unplan from a karaoke collab on Rikka's channel, I got up to get ready for bed but as always I did check twitter for a bit before bathing. The first I read is the graduation notice of Vesper and Magni. I was hoping all this time that it's just an extended suspension. When Vesper was first suspended he didn't come back right away so I was just waiting.
I was fucking annoyed cause I’m still elated from Unplan's new original song. Sure they waited for the collab to be over but their song is going to be released an hour after the collab! I can't imagine what Unplan is feeling at the moment, their hard work that they have planned for months only to be overshadowed by this devastating news. Seriously, holostars management/hololive pr team, impeccable timing as always. I still haven't forgotten what the management/pr team did during Uyu's 3D stream.
please stream, comment and support their song
Tumblr media
【MV】superior stars / unplan 【アルランディス×影山シエン×律可×花咲みやび】
I couldn't help but be mad. I was thinking when they come back I won’t be that person that would demand why they were suspended, I would just welcome them back! But as soon as i saw the announcement, I can’t help but want to know what the f*** happened!!
Tumblr media
Then I suddenly remembered the cover, the 21 Stars song cover. And as soon as I posted that, another announcement that they'll delay the release.
I know they'll remove them from the song. I get it, legal rights stuff. but it doesn't hurt to ask.
I was just annoyed at this point because I know regardless of what I say or post on the internet, I can't do anything!! I actually wrote a letter that I was gonna turn into art and post tomorrow but I guess I'll just show the draft here…
Tumblr media
I was sitting in two waiting rooms last night, Axel's announcement video and Unplan's song release.
I was calming myself before I said anything stupid. I just started to scroll and scroll on twitter. Somehow knowing that there are others like me, who are frustrated about this situation, calms me. I wasn't crying. I think the reason i wasnt is because I know where to follow them. Yes, I’m talking about the past life of Vesper and active account of Magni. Honestly, I’m kinda following prof’s account and saw a post that he won’t be streaming and has some things to finish. I already felt bad about it but I was just hoping for the best.
What made me sad were three posts. Posts from their senpai; Astel, Rio and Oga. Sure Astel and Rio managed to collab with Vesper and Magni but Oga didn't have his chance. I know Oga and Vesper collaborated during Aruran's telephone game but that is Aruran’s stream. The difference is that Rio and Magni, Vesper and Astel with Altare, were able to bond somehow through a game for an hour. I can imagine a drawing collab with Oga, Gamma, Iofi and Magni, with Iofi as a translator.
Astel said he wasn't feeling well but still he sang for Vesper and Magni to thank them for being part of Holostars. And as always stated his desire for Kira to come back, I want Kira back too.
Tumblr media
【Sing】TY / アステル
I just want to express more of my frustrations over this timing.
I kinda can already tell something was wrong when Holostars Rust season 2 was suddenly announced last week. Temma was very vague about it when he was planning season 2, so I was quite surprised about last week's announcement. Sure, management paid for season 2's trophy and got us hyped by releasing a highlight video, but all this feels like bribery, even a distraction from what is about to happen.
Tempus announced that they won’t be streaming which is understandable. I wouldn’t want them to be on stream with emotional Vesties, Magmites, Tempuras and Starlights. But I also don’t like this start for Holostars Rust season 2. But the JP boys are still going to stream so I hope you can support them. Let's help them make this event another success!
At this point, I’m just annoyed. I wanted to know what happened and if there was anything that I could have done to prevent this graduation. I know most Vesties and Magmites feel that they weren’t able to show enough love and support to have them stay. But honestly, regardless of how vague that announcement is, I can’t blame anyone for thinking that something happened behind the scenes. Vesper and Magni are excited to be part of Holostars. Vesper even went off script during his debut to say how happy he is to be part of Holostars.
My wish is that Vesper and Magni’s archive will stay intact. Regardless though, I will make time to save Vesper’s cover of Shinigami and Magni’s original song Copium. As much as I want to save Magni and Rio’s Human Fall Flat stream and Vesper’s Project Zomboid streams, I don’t have a lot of time and memory space. I also wish that they keep their Minecraft builds, unlike what they did to Kaoru’s build which they removed from the JP server. I can just hope at this point.
I can’t stress this enough, support your oshi as best you can. You don’t really need to spend money simply sharing their streams and posts, making drawings and memes, commenting on their videos and interacting on chat helps. The algorithm is a crazy thing, your interactions leave impressions on their posts that actually help boost them up.
For those who are in the Holostars community because of Vesper and Magni, we won’t hold it against you if you decide to leave. It’s your time to spend and not ours to control but you are welcome to stay and you are always welcome to come back.
I wish nothing but success for Vesper and Magni. I’ll miss them for sure.
Another week, another check-in
Tumblr media
I have completed the base of the French translation for Goncharov Escapes! and just need to do a few edits and recode some things. Update possibly happening somewhere today or tomorrow.
I will post about it separately.
Tumblr media
MelS has made quite a bit of progress, going through all my original comments. He's managed to add some variation, but there is still quite a bit to go through... He's also had some very good progress of for the last chapter tho. Like added 1k words in an evening.
But.... his work assignment has been extended until the end of the year. While he's ecstatic about this (he loves his job), it does mean he has less free times for... well, anything. He'll try to spend as much time as he can on TTATEH, but it will be limited.
It is very likely that: progress will be super flow from now on until at least the end of the year, and we won't be able to complete the game by the end of October as we wished. So because of this, we're discussing whether to just update the game when it is full complete and how much help I can give him.
The game will be completed, just not at the date we hoped...
Tumblr media
I've been re-wroking my website. It's looking pretty nice, with more of a Web 1.5 vibe but retro enough for me with the colour scheme I used. But also, I am missing the largest component: the project pages. I haven't decided how they should look just yet (and I need more since I've made more games). I think I'll start updating it bit by bit...
I've spent the start of this week doing some IF archiving, completing the addition of French Comp/Jam entries to the IFDB and the IFWiki. If you understand some French, you should check them out. There are some really cool gems in there. (I'm planning on reviewing them at some point :P )
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Some IF Events:
The IntroComp entries are out! While voting is set to start out shortly, you can already check the entries (and maybe think of feedback for the author?). Note: the stories submitted were not complete games.
This is the last month to submit your intent to the IFComp (@ifcomp). The IFComp does have monetary prizes as well as physical/online ones depending on your placement in the comp... If you don't plan on submitting a game, you can already create an account to vote. I'm not participating this year, so you might see some reviews of mine this autumn.
Over at the @neointeractives, the Single Choice Jam will be ending in next weekend! There is still time to add your story to the dozen already available! I've drafted a thing, maybe it will pan out before the dl...
Another @neointeractives jam will also be starting this week: the Bring Out Your Ghost, to showcase WiPs in indefinite hiatus, or abandoned projects. Expect the official announcement soon ;)
If you are looking to make something a bit more NSFW, the Orifice Jam might be for you! There is a bit more than a week as well to add something hole-y!
Know how to write some French? There is a contest on Moiki where you can win a T-shirt! I really shouldn't try this one... but free t-shirt tho xD
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
The plan for next week (starting now):
Finish updating my website
Finish the Goncharov Escapes! update + add the old source code to GitHub
Fix a bug I re-added last time I updated MtP (I just found it out, so annoyed at that...)
Finish hopefully my Single Choice entry
Start working on the next {Finish your damn projects} task
I got the motivation for this post from seeing a couple of Tiktoks that really annoyed me, although the sentiment is shared on this site as well. Basically just a rant post.
This is specifically in reference to two situations; complaints about the lack of body paint for Ryan Potter’s Beast Boy on the set of Titans, and the translated costumes for the New Monster High movie coming out soon. However, I’m sure it’s applicable to a wide range of other media. I’m not annoyed that people feel let down or disappointed by these costumes. That’s a valid emotion and a natural reaction. What annoys me, is when people turn immediately to the nearest cosplayer page and go “they did so much better :( on such lower expectations :( the studio had a low budget :( but theirs was lower :(
So I’m gonna say this loud and clear
COSPLAY AND COSTUMING FOR TV AND FILM ARE TWO. DIFFERENT. SKILL SETS.
First of all. A cosplayer only needs to worry about costuming one person. Generally themselves, and depending on how experienced they are, they already know their own size, what’s gonna look good on it and how it’s gonna fit. They’re only obliged to make one costume per event and how intricate or impressive it looks is up to them.
A costume designer for a movie or tv show has to make costumes for a cast of people they’ve likely never worked with before, take their sizes, do multiple fittings and then make sure those costumes are durable enough to last the entire shooting time and look good consistently.
 A cosplayer’s costume only needs to look good for about a day, and it’s completely within their means to shed bulkier items like wings, high-heeled shoes, crowns or wigs if they want to rest before a big photo shoot. A costume for filming needs to last for an entire shooting day, and then guess what? That actor needs to wake up the next morning and put it on, again. For a couple of weeks at least. It’s important that they’re comfortable. They can’t just take it off halfway through the convention. Adding to that, the costumer will likely need to make quite a few replicas of the costume in question, for different shooting days, and in different sizes for stunt doubles or stand-ins.
Body paint rant: Yes I’m upset that Beast Boy isn’t green. You can be upset that Lagoona isn’t blue. But body paint is a whole different circus in an official workplace. I’ve done body paint for cosplay and seen body paint done for cosplay. It was irritable, caused horrific acne and my partner’s pink body paint for Mina started cracking halfway through the day, so we scrubbed it off. Cosplayers only deal with body paint for a day or two, not needing to worry about the back of their neck or up the arms because it only needs to look good for certain photograph angles.
Actors wake up early so they can sit in make-up for two hours to make sure it looks good from every camera angle and under heavy studio lights, which is then reapplied between every shot so it looks consistent. There’s a reason Jennifer Lawrence quit the Xmen films. I’m not surprised they didn’t have Lagoona be blue. That’s a horrible thing to do to a little girl, especially if you’re setting up to do that through her adolescence every couple of years for a huge franchise. I’m not surprised that Beast Boy isn’t green. If Ryan Potter’s skin is sensitive to the paint they used, it’d break out in massive acne or rashes that will plunge his chances of success in an industry that hinges on good looks.
(Also; Many documented instances of actors having to quit films and tv shows because certain paints used, made them physically unwell and unable to perform).
Cosplayers with more intricate cosplays do better, because it looks more impressive. Costumes in film and tv look better simpler, with a coherent sense throughout the whole production. Think of iconic film and TV looks. Leia’s white dress. Bella’s grey jacket. Cinderella’s ball dress. Less is more, because that translates better visually in a space where all of the different elements are competing for attention. Also, cosplayers are only accountable for what they buy and use. If they lose a prop, or a bead, or a piece of jewellery, they can be disappointed, but move on with their lives. Costumers have to be accountable for every little bit of intricate costume-dressing, and if they lose something or break something, that has to be reported to their boss and possibly come out of their paycheck, or worse, their reputation.
The last thing I’ll say specifically refers to the Monster High costumes. I hold that costumer in high regard. It a perfect translation of cartoony, outlandish outfits the characters wear, made to suit, fit and be wearable by actual little girls. The cropped shirts, tightly-fitted pants and fish-net stockings the characters wore in the cartoon looked stylish and wonderful as a cartoon. But for the actual teen actors playing them, I think those outfits would have been inappropriate. It makes me sad when i see drawn redesigns of the live-action costumes and they just make the outfits skimpy again. Yeah, the costumes look a little cheap. Yeah, the grown-ass cosplayers look more cartoon accurate. But I could see a little girl being able to replicate live-action Clawdeen Wolf’s outfit so easily and she’s the actual target audience.
(The production also has bigger problems than underwhelming costumes re; problematic director)
I’m not undermining cosplayers. They do a fantastic job of dedicating time, money and skills to look as good as they do. But they’re not costumers. They shouldn’t be lauded as costumers (unless they have TV and Film experience) and please acknowledge there’s a lot more that goes into making an outfit for film than just looking impressive visually.
Defending the Most Protective of Barriers
I haven’t much used this space to comment on news from other states, but I seem to be in that mode precisely now: last week I wrote about the new law in North Dakota restricting the rights of voters to elect federal officials who will turn 81 before the end of the year before their terms expires. And now I’m going to write about a different new law, the one passed in Louisiana earlier this month that is going to require that the Ten Commandments be displayed in every public school classroom in the state. And not displayed casually either: the law requires that the text be presented on “a poster or a framed document that is at least 11 inches by 14 inches” in size. Furthermore, it must be “printed in a large, easily readable font.” Also, the act doesn’t leave anything to chance and actually enshrines in law the specific translation that must be used, one that is clearly derived from Protestant (as opposed to Catholic, let alone Jewish) tradition. To read the act itself, click here.
You might expect a rabbi-author such as myself to be delighted. The Torah teaches that the Ten Commandments were spoken aloud by God to the Israelites camped at the foot of Sinai, after all, and they are widely understood to constitute the core of the covenant that binds the God of Israel and the people Israel. So why should I object to such a text being disseminated widely, and perhaps especially to children? There are actually lots of reasons.
First and foremost, I am convinced that nothing good will come from degrading the barrier that our country used to pride itself on maintaining between church and state. I have made that argument many times in this space and it’s very much still what I think. The White House Christmas tree irritates me. The White House seder hosted by the Obamas from 2009 to 2016, times ten. (And the fact that it was unkosher is specifically not what I found so wrong with it. But that too.) And then there’s the White House Chanukah Party, initiated by President Bush in 2001 just a few months after 9/11, and carried forward by every President since. All those lighted menorahs look pretty enough on display in the West Wing, but the whole thing feels wrong to me, wrong and deeply counterproductive to our wish to maintain and, if possible, even to strengthen the wall between church and state in our country, that wall that permits all citizens to conduct their spiritual lives without interference from the government and without having to vet their religious practices with the government before engaging in them. I’m an equal-opportunity curmudgeon though, not solely a Jewish one: I find the plastic Christmas tree in the post office in December every bit as annoying as the plastic menorah on display annually in what should be a government facility free of all religious influence.
But this new law in Louisiana is bizarre for other reasons as well.
First of all, if the assumption is that being exposed as children to the Ten Commandments is going to achieve the kind of American society Justice Alito had in mind in his secretly recorded comment the other week to the effect that America should return “to a place of godliness,” then it’s hard to know how that is going to work since so much of the text of the Ten Commandments is out of sync with practices that are standard in our nation and our nation’s churches. Every serious biblical scholar knows, for example, that the Sabbath mentioned in the fourth commandment is Shabbat, i.e., Saturday, not Sunday. (For a simple explanation of why the Church moved its weekly day of worship to Sunday as opposed to holding it on Shabbat, click here.)  The Second Commandment forbids the use of plastic imagery in worship, but America’s churches are filled with artwork and statuary. Nor does this new law make sense on a partisan level, even: Jeff Landry, the governor of Louisiana, has formally endorsed Donald Trump’s candidacy for President, but the seventh commandment prohibits adulterous relationships as contrary to God’s law. I suppose there are ways to explain away all of these issues, but it still seems strange for Louisiana’s governor to wish that these laws be presented to school children as the essence of God’s revelation and then leave it to the children’s teachers to explain to the boys and girls why Michelangelo was not behaving wickedly in depicting God on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, let alone who exactly Stormy Daniels is.
But the real reason I’m opposed to the Louisiana law has to do with the concept of textual integrity, which is to say, with the notion that you cannot read a text out of context and then insist that you understand it.
The story is beyond riveting. The Israelites cross the Sea of Reeds, then head south into the wilderness. They have no idea what they are going to eat or where they should camp. There is no obvious source of drinking water, at least not at first. They must know that Canaan, the Promised Land, lies to the north, not the south. And yet their leader, “that man Moses,” insists that they head in the opposite direction, but without saying clearly—or really even at all—why they should or what they can or should expect once they arrive wherever it is that they are going.  This goes on for seven weeks, the forty-nine days later enshrined in Jewish tradition as the s’firah, the “counting.” And then the Israelites arrive at Sinai. They have been told that they are coming “to God,” but without having had it explained to them even vaguely what that could possibly mean. They are told what to do: to wash their clothing and to refrain from intimate relations for a period of three days, but without being told precisely what is about to happen.
And then the scene commences that we all know. The mountain is covered by cloud and smoke. Deafening shofar blasts can be heard, but without it being clear where the shofars are or who is blowing air into them. Bolts of lightning illumine the sky. Claps of thunder are fully audible, combining with the shofar blasts  and the lightning to create an atmosphere that is both blinding and deafening. And then, all at once, a deep silence. The shofarot  fall silent. The lightning stops. And God speaks to the people.
What follows is the Ten Commandments, the text we all know by heart or almost by heart. But the story continues in a way that would probably surprise the Governor of Louisiana if he were to open up his Bible and continue reading. After just ten commandments, the people feel enervated to the point of exhaustion by the experience of audible, sensory communion with God. They break into what was presumably meant to be an ongoing revelation of divine law and beg Moses to go up personally to the top of the mountain “where God was” and himself to retrieve the rest of the rules and laws that are to serve as the meat of the covenant intended forever to bind Israel and God. What Moses thought is not recorded, but his actual response is: he kindly tells them that they’ve passed the test God has imposed upon them (but without saying what exactly was being tested or even what precisely the test was), then heads up the mountain. God, in our day so taciturn, is positively talkative: Moses has barely begun to ascend the mountain and God is already continuing the revelation. And then, presumably once Moses is settled in atop Sinai, God really gets going and continues to detail the rules and laws that will constitute the covenant.
All these Moses records in a document called “the Book of the Covenant,” sefer ha-b’rit. And then he returns to the people, reads the book aloud to them—since they cannot reasonably be expected to enter into the covenant blindly, i.e., without knowing what is to be expected of them as the human parties to it—and only then, after the people formally agrees to follow the rules of the covenant, is the weird and wonderful sacrificial ceremony described in detail in Exodus 24 undertaken. The people agree to stand still while the blood of a slaughtered bull is splattered all over them. And God, amazingly, deigns to be seen…but only by the elders of the nation and only from below so that all they really see are the soles of the divine feet.
And that is the real story of the Ten Commandments, that they are merely the first ten of the sixty-odd laws that constitute the terms of the covenant between the Jewish people and the God of Israel. Later on, God will issue many more laws and statutes that will henceforth govern Jewish life. But the terms of covenant itself—the terms included in the sefer ha-b’rit—are presented in Scripture in Exodus, chapters 20 through 23. So singling out the Ten Commandments and suggesting that they are somehow different in kind or nature from the rest of the commandments that constitute the covenant is either naively or willfully to misread the text of Scripture.
Yes, it is true that Moses later breaks the tablets of the law emblazoned with the first ten of the commandments, then refashions the tablets atop the mountain and redelivers them to the people. But there is no reasonable way to read the scriptural narrative to yield the conclusion that God’s covenant with Israel only “really” includes the first ten commandments, let alone that these are intended to serve all of humankind as the basis of decent and ethical behavior.
The new law requiring that schools display the Ten Commandment in every classroom in Louisiana is an egregious breach of the wall between church and state. And it imputes a meaning to the text that has no basis in the actual scriptural narrative. For both those reasons, I hope that the courts strike down this law and re-affirm the barrier between the government and the religious lives of the citizenry.
