Original skull of a Mycenaean woman around her 30's (note most of the front face and jaw missing and thus the highly speculative nature of any reconstruction)
Tumblr media
Original reconstruction (1995), based on the skull and on the woman's relatives to fill in the missing gaps. (Original article: https://www.jstor.org/stable/30104516)
Tumblr media
Digital "reconstruction" (AI) based on the 1995 reconstruction. The woman in her 30's now looks 14, has lost all semblance of the skull shape (one of the only things we can know for sure) and in general looks nothing like it.
The historian who comissioned this had this to say: "Meanwhile artwork that gives us depictions of women in the ancient world is by men & for the male gaze, depicting stereotyped (and almost always fantasy) women."
And what is this if not a fantasy and unrealistic depiction of a woman? There's literally no facial features to work with and yet the end result satisfies the beauty standards in the bias present in genAI. This is a "reconstruction" that feels synthetic and fake (because it is), and it spits in the face of art, the scientific discipline of facial reconstruction and serves only as a way to show the author and "artist"'s biases

hello 👋 woulddd you happen to have the image of the a cartoon cat that is orange and low-key looks like it was drawn in paint. it has a light blue background and the cat has like 6 or 8 stark and obvious whiskers and he's staring right at the camera with this horrified, mildly disgusted look. you'd use it as a reaction to when someone says something out of pocket or concerning in a otherwise normal conversation and you want to display disappointment and horror but also immediately move on.
I have attached a very poor remake from memory. Thank you SO much
Tumblr media
I LOVE your remake ('very poor' my ass it looks great honestly) but I'm afraid I don't recognise the image itself!! It gives me cool cat vibes (probs bc of the orange + blue combo) but IK that's not it. Floor is open for submissions as always!

AI reconstruction from portraits of emperors of the Northern Song dynasty (960–1127) (北宋). Sometimes I think the AI fantasizes on its own. However, it's still curious.)
The emperors of the Northern Song dynasty come from the Zhao (趙) family. They are relatives of Zhao Zheng (趙政), who went down in history under the pseudonym of Qin Shi Huang.

'INTERLUDIO XLVII'. AI 🤖 hmm..
Just played with one of the AI image generators out of curiosity attempting to recreate some ethnological / historical reconstruction of an ancient amazon warrior: My 'AI experience' - at this stage it's next to impossible to make these generators understand historical context and produce authentic historically accurate armour, props or costumes. It looks like AI refers to available and easily searchable pop-culture 'fantasy' reference images [like phony Wonder Woman "amazons" or other spoofy interpretations], disregarding description criteria used such as "classical antiquity", "historical accuracy", "nomadic culture", "pelta shield", "phrygian cap", etc. Nevertheless, being somewhat skeptical I find this experiment curious [and hope the AI image generating technology is yet at its initial stage of development having a whole lot of cultural and civilizational matters to learn, requiring more training] - what do you think? Am keen to hear your opinion..
