“I am learning to understand rather than immediately judge or to be judged. I cannot blindly follow the crowd and accept their approach. I will not allow myself to indulge in the usual manipulating game of role creation. Fortunately for me, my self-knowledge has transcended that and I have come to understand that life is best to be lived and not to be conceptualized. I am happy because I am growing daily and I am honestly not knowing where the limit lies. To be certain, every day there can be a revelation or a new discovery. I treasure the memory of the past misfortunes. It has added more to my bank of fortitude.”     ~ Bruce Lee

part 2
included in this compilation under the cut are the registration cards of 15 easy company veterans featured in band of brothers (2001). all are taken from publicly available draft records held in online databases and collected by me, and contain details like the registrant's serial number, physical attributes, date and place of birth, phone number, residential and mailing addresses, place of employment and nominated next of kin, as well as their handwriting sample and signature. like or reblog if you use or save.

a note about draft registration
during the second world war, the united states selective service system conducted a total of six draft registrations, the records of which are held collectively in two groupings at the national personnel records centre in st. louis, missouri. members of easy company were drafted in all but one of these registrations from october 1940 through to december 1942. the six registrations are as follows:
16 october 1940: males aged 21 to 35 "within the continental united states". winters, nixon, welsh, toye, perconte and liebgott were among those registered on this date.
1 july 1941: males "who had reached 21 since the first registration". lipton and speirs were registered on this date.
16 february 1942: between the ages of 20 and 45 "who had not previously registered". roe, bull, malarkey and luz, among others, were registered on this date.
27 april 1942: between the ages of 46 to 65 "not eligible for military service". no known easy company members were registered on this date.
30 june 1942: between the ages of 18 to 20. talbert, webster, grant, guarnere, babe, shifty, skip and christenson, among others, were registered on this date.
10-31 december 1942: "those who reached the age of 18 after 12 november 1942". penkala, who turned 18 in august 1942 three months before the cutoff, was nonetheless among those registered in this period.
if you have a family member or ancestor who served in a branch of the us armed forces during either the first or second world war, chances are that you can find their registration card on databases like ancestry.com and familysearch.org.

note: a few online sources incorrectly state that grant was born on 14 july 1915. his registration card gives his real date of birth as 1 march 1922, making him about 7 years younger than people generally think he is. supposedly this misconception comes from confusing grant with another veteran drafted between 1940-42, charles m. grant, who was born on 14 july.

i love that people are arguing that battinson shouldn't have a robin in the batman 2 because robin is so essential to batman as a character both in universe and looking at the comics as a medium
not only do you have the classic flashback in nightwing annual 2021 but a lonely place of dying is so much better for that thought
if you've never read it, lpod is the introduction of tim drake, where he goes to get dick and tries to get him to and help bruce who is acting out after jason's death. he told dick that batman needs robin right now but dick, having hung up robin, went as nightwing and so tim puts on the costume and goes to help, saving their lives and convincing bruce to train him, proving the idea that "batman needs a robin" correct
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
but this goes further than just in the comics
batman made his debut in detective comics #27 (March 30th 1939)
robin made his debut in detective comics #38 (March 6th 1940)
batman has always had a robin
dick retires as robin in tales of teen titans #44 (july 1984), but jason made his first appearance as robin in batman #366 (december 1983) his first proper appearance was in detective comics #525 (april 1983) but he isn't robin until december so there wasn't a time when there was no robin, even if he wasn't with bruce at the time
the only time there wasn't a robin was after jasons death in batman #428 (October 20th 1988) and before tim makes his debut in batman #442 (November 2nd 1989) leaving batman robin-less for just over a year
in total, since his debut, batman has been robin-less for a grand total of 720 days out of the 30,850 i am not getting into tim, steph, and damian's deaths ok, feel free to do the maths yourself but also tim is still robin so...
anyway, all this to say i want battinson to have a little 8 year old follow him around making stupid quips whilst being the only thing to have bright colours in gotham

Man Ray 1890-1976 Genius of Light
Robert Rocca, Pierre-Yves Butzbach
SilvanaEditoriale, Cinisello Balsamo 2023, 232 pagine, 220 ill., 24,5x30cm, Brossura, Inglese, ISBN 978883665656

Man Ray occupies a prominent place in the history of 20th-century art. A versatile artist, who lived mainly in Paris, he is best known as a photographer. Indeed, he was one of the first to use photography, not as a simple means of reproduction, but as a genuine creative medium, turning the technique into an art form. Some of his photographs, such as Le Violon d’Ingres (1924) and Noire et blanche (1926), have achieved iconic status.
Born in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) on 27 August 1890, Emmanuel Radnitsky, known as Man Ray (as in a ray of light), actively participated in the intellectual and artistic circles of New York. He discovered the European avant-gardes and befriended Marcel Duchamp who opened the doors of Dadaism to him and welcomed him to Paris in July 1921.
At the heart of Parisian artistic life, he participated in the innovative experiments of the Dadaists and Surrealists, met with painters, poets and intellectuals, and became famous for his portraits. He developed a career as a fashion photographer, notably for designers Paul Poiret and Elsa Schiaparelli. A tireless experimenter, he rediscovered the technique of “photograms” (abstract silhouettes of objects) that Tristan Tzara named “rayographs” and in 1929, with his new partner Lee Miller, developed the “solarization” technique. In 1940, after the fall of France, Man Ray left for the United States and met Juliet Browner, who became his wife and muse. He returned to Paris in 1951 and lived there until his death in 1976.
Man Ray is renowned for having revolutionized the art of photography, but he was also a painter, draughtsman, assembler of objects, sculptor, writer and filmmaker. It is this protean artist that we seek to discover or re-discover, through a true panorama of his works, which will enable us to comprehend Man Ray’s creative process and the importance of his art.

1944 Gloster Meteor Twin Engine Jet Fighter
The Gloster Meteor was the first British jet fighter and the Allies' only jet aircraft to engage in combat operations during the Second World War. The Meteor's development was heavily reliant on its ground-breaking turbojet engines, pioneered by Frank Whittle and his company, Power Jets Ltd. Development of the aircraft began in 1940, although work on the engines had been under way since 1936. The Meteor first flew in 1943 and commenced operations on 27 July 1944 with No. 616 Squadron RAF
The Meteor F.1 was powered by two Rolls-Royce Welland turbojet engines, Britain's first production jet engines, which were built under license from Whittle's designs. The Meteor embodied the advent of practical jet propulsion; in the type's service life, both military and civil aviation manufacturers rapidly integrated turbine engines into their designs, favoring its advantages such as smoother running and greater power output. The Meteor's engines were considerably more practical than those of the German Me 262 as, unlike the Me 262, the engines were embedded into the wing in nacelles between the front and rear spars rather than underslung, saving some weight due to shorter landing gear legs and less massive spars.

a note about draft registration
during the second world war, the united states selective service system conducted a total of six draft registrations, the records of which are held collectively in two groupings at the national personnel records centre in st. louis, missouri. members of easy company were drafted in all but one of these registrations from october 1940 through to december 1942.
