Poetic Tragedy (Part 9)

Pairing: Reader X Billy Russo

Warnings: Cursing, angst, sadness, substance abuse, mental health issues, mentions of sexual assault. This one’s a little dark and not really in a violent way (okay some of it is lmao). Just more the themes explored, I guess?

A/N: I don’t know if I like torturing you, Billy or me more with this story lololol

(Also don’t worry, this isn’t the end).

Billy had woken you up just as it was getting light outside, murmuring that he had to get up and help Frank put their men through some drills. You’d barely been awake enough to register his words but nodded, sleepily telling him it was okay. So when you woke up hours later, you were alone. You tried to ignore the nerves about what would be going down later once it got dark and forced yourself to get up. The least you could do was see if they needed a helping hand with anything. You didn’t need to go and get dressed since both you and Billy had slept in your clothes. You got up, rummaging in the bag for the croissants to have for breakfast. You didn’t want them to go to waste and you took two of them. You also grabbed a blueberry muffin for Billy after you sussed out they were his favorites. You ended up finishing the first croissant before you even got downstairs and were happily starting on the second as you got to the main floor. It was alive and thrumming with energy as you walked in, looking at the guys training, checking weapons and some eating breakfast. Everyone seemed to be in good spirits. You saw Billy across the room and walked over to him so you could give him his muffin. As you approached, you noticed he was with the recruit you’d lied to when you went to get your fix. The same one that had let Josh in.

“I just don’t think I’m cut out for this, sir,” he muttered, a frown on his face as he glared at the floor. Billy sighed, settling his hands on the younger man's shoulders and making him look at him.

“You are cut out for this. It’s okay to be nervous. Hell, bein’ nervous is good, keeps you on your toes. You don’t wanna go into this shit bein’ cocky, that shit’s how you wind up shot. You got this, alright?” Billy insisted, giving the recruit a meaningful look.

“But I keep making mistakes,” the recruit lamented, a deep frown on his face.

“Everyone makes mistakes, that's how we learn. And I know I was pretty hard on you last week, but that’s on me. I had shit to deal with and I took it out on you, for that I’m sorry. But none of that matters right now. What matters is that we need you there, Nelson,” Billy said firmly. The recruit looked at Billy for a long moment as if he was mulling the words in his brain. But then he stood up a little taller and nodded.

“Thank you, sir,” he murmured as Billy’s hands left his shoulders.

“Don't gotta thank me, just get your ass ready,” Billy smirked. The recruit flashed him a smile before moving away, only just noticing you standing there watching the exchange curiously. You gave him a sheepish smile, hoping he hadn't got in too much trouble with Billy after you conned him to let you out but your mind remembered the bruises around his neck. He gave you an awkward smile in return before hurrying away and Billy turned to you. It was weird seeing him be soft like that with his guys. He was a good leader.

“Got you this,” you smiled, handing him the muffin. He took it, noticing it was a blueberry one and a grin painted his lips. You really wished your heart would stop being weird whenever he smiled. You didn't understand it.

“Thanks,” he nodded, taking a large bite of it. You’d finished your croissant at this point and looked around at everyone before back at Billy.

“Thank you for last night, I really appreciate it,” you murmured, stuffing your hands in your hoodie pockets.

“I keep tellin’ you, you don’t gotta thank me,” he huffed, a smile toying on his lips.

“Well, I want to. You didn't have to do that for me but you did anyway,” you shrugged.

“Thought you could use a bit of a break. And I got a lot of shit to make up for so…” he trailed off, looking down uncertainly.

“The past is in the past, Billy. I think you and I both know it's best left there. We should just focus on the now,” you mused softly. Billy hummed, nodding thoughtfully at your words. He then glanced over back to his guys before his eyes drifted back to you, giving you a long look for a moment.

“I gotta get back. You should go find Karen, do somethin’ to distract yourself,” he suggested with a knowing look. Your lips quirked up and you nodded.

“Yeah… I will,” you smiled. You knew you’d be anxious all day if you didn't have anything to do. Your mind was your own worst enemy. After another long look and a squeeze to the hand, Billy went back off to his guys and you went to find Karen.

She put you to work right away. Despite Frank and Billy already taking inventory of the weapons and ammo they’d need for the big hit, she wanted you to help her check it over again. It wasn't that she didn’t trust them, she just wanted to make sure everything was as it should be. She’d made a comment about how no one ever died from double-checking. So you helped her sort through numerous guns, big guns, and made sure they all had the right ammo and enough of it. It was a little terrifying handling them and you tried to keep your mind from drifting to what would be happening that night. You stuck with Karen for most of the day, helping her with anything that needed doing. You weren't going out there and putting your life on the line with this job so you wanted to feel like you at least contributed in some way and didn't just sit there and let everyone else do the work. When you’d run out of things to help Karen with, you wound up in the kitchen helping Annie cook dinner for everyone and quickly realized how much hard work it was cooking for this many people. You had no idea how she knew exactly the right amount of ingredients to make sure everyone had a decently sized meal, but she was good at her job and clearly knew what she was doing.

Dinner was a slightly tense affair, the looming oncoming danger tainting the air. You were sitting at a table with Billy, Karen, Frank, Curtis and Micro, who had come in to help them with the job. While he definitely wouldn't go where the gunfire would be, he’d be staying in the van and helping however it was he usually helped. Curtis seemed deep in thought and Karen was pressed up against Frank’s side, a worried look on her face. Billy, Frank and Micro were the only ones at the table seemingly at ease, chatting away like they weren't about to embark on a deadly mission. The whole cafeteria was quieter than usual. Normally, it was loud, full of chattering as the recruits ate their food. This time, it was faint murmuring instead and you wondered if this was how it always was before they were going out on a job. You pushed your food around with your fork, not really feeling like eating when the nerves were twisting up your stomach the way they were. You were worried people might get hurt and anxious about if they’d even be able to complete the task they’d set for themselves. You didn't want them to get rid of the Irish mob just for you, not anymore. But Dean’s lifeless face would be forever burned into your brain and you wanted justice for what happened to him. You needed closure.

“Alright guys, I’m gonna get my stuff ready,” Curtis said quietly as he stood. He didn't wait for a reply before he hurried off, taking his plate into the kitchen before going to the sick bay. He seemed on edge but you didn't blame him. He also didn't like violence too much. He was a healer, not a fighter.

“You not hungry?” Billy murmured, glancing at you. Your eyes had been following Curtis to the sick bay but they turned to Billy at his words.

“Not really,” you admitted with a shake of your head.

“I’ll eat it,” Micro grinned. You heard a loud thunk under the table and Micro jumped with a yelp.

“Ow! Not cool, man,” he muttered with a frown to Billy who you were pretty sure just kicked him.

“Really, it’s fine. I don’t want it and I’d rather it didn't go to waste,” you muttered, sliding the plate over to Micro. He shot you a bright smile, turning to Billy with a more smug smirk before he started to devour the food.

“I’ll be back in a minute,” you said softly to Billy. His dark eyes scanned your face, concern shining behind them as he nodded. You tried to give him a reassuring smile before you stood and made your way to the sick bay.

You’d been wanting to talk to Curtis but chickened out every time, feeling emotion clog in your throat at even thinking about it. But he’d be going out there with the others and if you’d learned anything from what happened with Dean, it was that life was short and you couldn't always guarantee another second of it. You’d rather tell him than have something awful happen to him and you’d never said anything. You pushed open the sick bay door, closing it behind you and stuffing your hands in your pockets. Curtis turned to look at you then as he checked through a large black bag.

“Y/N, hey. Can I help you with something?” he asked politely, a tired smile on his face. He had circles around his eyes and a haunted look behind them but you knew what was bothering him. The same thing that had been eating you up from the inside out.

“I just… I wanted to thank you for taking Dean in. He told me you were the one to recruit him, that you saw the… the good in him. He was happy here and I’m glad he had a chance to experience that with you guys, even if it wasn't for too long… This place meant so much to him and I know he really appreciated what you did for him,” you rambled nervously, voice shaking a little at the sheer force you had to use to stop from breaking down. You wouldn't though. You weren't the victim in this situation, Dean had been. Curtis swallowed thickly, glancing from you to the bag and then back at you, his eyes shining.

“Thank you, I appreciate you telling me that. He was a good man,” he murmured sadly. You nodded, chewing your lower lip and not really knowing what to say now. You’d really just wanted to get that off your chest, to make sure Curtis knew how much he’d done for Dean.

“He really was,” you replied softly, shifting on your feet. Curtis sniffed before blowing out a long breath and zipping up the bag. You saw something shift with him then, as if he was leaving his emotion behind to get ready for the fight.

“Would you be able to give me a hand taking these to the vans outside?” he asked, giving you a tentative smile. You nodded, happy for the conversation to be over. You tried not to be worried that he needed numerous bags of medical supplies. You told yourself it was better to be over prepared than under prepared.

Not long after, everyone was outside the warehouse, the recruits filing into multiple black vans. Frank and Karen were standing off to the side, Karen poking his chest with a stern look on her face. You imagined she was giving him a good talking to about making sure he came back to her. Billy appeared next to you then. He was wearing his uniform and it was strange to see him in something other than jeans and his t-shirts. He still had his hoodie slung over the uniform though. He gave you a hesitant smile as he took your wrist and led you away slightly, away from prying eyes and ears.

“I wanted to give you somethin’ before I left,” he murmured as he let go of you, pulling something out of his hoodie pocket. He held a silver chain in the palm of his hand and you blinked at it slowly.

“What is it?” you asked, the tremor in your voice betraying the fact you already knew what it was and who it had belonged to. You just didn't want to jump to conclusions.

“I was Dean’s,” Billy explained, putting it into your hand as you glared at it.

“I uh… thought you might want somethin’ of his… To remember him by. Looked in his room and he didn’t have much but… this was in his bedside drawer. Thought you might want it,” his voice was soft and slightly unsure but you didn't look at him, staring at the chain in your hand. Flashes of memories flooded you of all the times you’d seen him wearing it, he’d owned this thing for as long as you’d known him. You’d never been a sentimental person, never had anything to be sentimental about. But you felt the weight of this gesture pressing down on your chest like one of those medieval torture devices. It was something of Dean’s, tangible and physical proof that he had indeed existed. You felt your eyes burn with tears, biting down hard on your lower lip to stop it from wobbling. He’d rendered you speechless as you just stared at it in your hand and he shifted a little where he stood.

“You want me to put it on for you?” he asked after a long drawn-out silence. Your tearful eyes snapped to him then as you nodded, sniffling a little.

“Please,” you breathed shakily. He took the chain from your hand and you moved your hair up and out of the way as he carefully placed it around your neck. His fingers danced across your skin as he fastened it and when he was done, you let your hair go, glancing down at the chain. The weight of it felt soothing and painful all at the same time.

“Thank you, Billy,” you muttered, sincerity coating your words as you gave him a meaningful look. He nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. He opened his mouth to say something but then Frank shouted over that it was time to go. Billy’s smile faded and you both just looked at each other for a moment, neither of you wanting to say goodbye because that felt far too final. Instead, he gave you a nod and went to walk away. Your hand darted out, catching his wrist tightly and he turned to look at you with mild shock on his face.

“Be careful,” you pleaded, wide eyes blinking up at him.

“I will,” he soothed, giving you a smile. He caught your hand as it slid off his wrist and he brought it to his mouth, placing a soft kiss to the back of it. Your stomach did that weird thing it liked to do around Billy that made you feel like you were falling off a cliff. With one last smile directed at you, he walked over to the van Frank was in and climbed into the passenger side, leaving you and Karen standing outside watching the vans drive away. The pair of you stood out there a moment longer, silence hanging heavy over you both.

“Come on,” she murmured, moving over to you and guiding you inside.

You wound up sitting at the same table you’d been sitting at having dinner earlier with Karen and Annie. Other than the two recruits guarding the door, you were the only ones there and the silence was deafening. It was making your skin crawl as the three of you sat there lost in your own thoughts.

“I have an idea,” Annie hummed, getting up from her chair before waltzing off to the kitchen. She was an older woman, her hair mostly gray and cropped short. She had a kind face and motherly energy about her. She emerged not long later and walked back over to the table.

“Cards?” Karen asked with a rueful smile as she spied the pack in her hands.

“Yep. You know how to play Go Fish?” Annie asked, turning her eyes to you as you shrugged and shook your head. It felt like hours passed with the three of you playing numerous card games and you failed at every one of them. The mood was all over the place. One minute you’d all be enjoying yourself and laughing, mostly at how bad you were at everything you tried, and the next you’d all hear a noise outside. Your heads would all whip to the door as you waited on bated breath, but when nothing happened you’d return to your card game in silence before you all calmed down a bit again.

“Oh my god, how can you be so bad at this”? Karen giggled, shaking her head at you as you lost for what felt like the millionth time.

“I shouldn't be surprised I’ve got bad luck with cards too,” you snorted with a roll of your eyes. There were a few dull bangs outside then and you all turned to the door once more, silence taking over the three of you. You felt your heart hammering away in your chest as you refused to look away. But instead of nothing but uncomfortable silence following the noises, this time the front doors opened and recruits started filing in.

Karen stood up so fast that her chair fell over and she all but ran over to Frank once she saw him. You stood on shaky legs, walking over to the crowd as your eyes scanned it, looking for Billy. You knew logically that Frank wouldn't be smiling the way he was if something bad had happened to him, but your brain wouldn't settle until you saw him with your own eyes. You finally saw him through the sea of people and he was also looking around. When his eyes met yours, he looked relieved and a bright smile graced his face as you both rushed to each other. You wrapped your arms around his middle and you knew you’d startled him because his body tensed. You’d surprised yourself if you were honest. This was the first hug you’d ever given someone willingly. With your initiation. But once his shock wore off, he wrapped his arms around you, pressing his face into your hair as you clung to him for a moment, trying to calm yourself that he was okay. With how much bad luck you’d had lately, you really thought something bad was going to happen to him. When you finally moved away, he had a big smile on his face and your heart started beating weird again.

“We did it!” he grinned, looking proud. You felt breathless for a moment as you blinked up at him.

“And no one got hurt?” you questioned softly. He shook his head and his smile widened and you felt the relief sweep through your entire being at the news. It was done, it was over. And no one else had to die. Frank walked over to you both then, Karen practically wrapped around him like a snake as they approached.

“I can’t believe you guys took out the Irish mob,” you snorted incredulously. You knew the things these guys had done to rid the city of evil but being here when it had happened had given you a new perspective on it.

“What Irish mob?” Frank asked with a mischievous smirk, making you smile and shake your head.

“Well, I don't know about anyone else but I feel like a celebration is in order!” Billy called out, earning very loud agreement from everyone there.

You sat in a chair as you sipped some water, watching the ‘party’ in full swing. The music was loud and everyone was enjoying themselves. You’d politely turned down every drink other than water. You’d never really been interested in alcohol and you didn't really feel like swapping one addiction for another. You’d been happy to just drink your water as you watched everyone having a great time. Karen had even convinced Frank to dance with her at one point much to everyone's amusement and you had a feeling the pair were a little drunk. You’d watched with a smile as Billy went around everyone, making sure to tell them what a good job they’d done. It was nice seeing him like this. Eventually, he came over and plonked himself in the chair next to you.

“How do you feel now it’s all over?” he asked, glancing at you with a glass of something in his hand. He wasn't quite drunk but he wasn't sober either. He had a relaxed demeanor about him.

“I don’t know, it’s a little weird. I’m not sure if my brains caught up yet,” you snorted softly.

“I get that,” he murmured, giving you a sweet smile. You covered your mouth as a loud yawn got ripped out of you and you felt your cheeks heat up at how suddenly it had crept up on you.

“Tired?” he asked with a lopsided grin.

“Yeah. It was super exhausting sitting here doing absolutely nothing as I waited for you to get back,” you replied playfully, making him snort.

“Want me to walk you to your room?” he asked and you nodded. You didn't really need him to walk you up there but you wanted to prolong your time with him a little longer.

You both walked up to the third floor in amicable silence and once you got to your door, you lingered outside of it for a moment.

“Thank you… for everything. For helping me get clean, for taking care of me, the whole Irish thing. I really don’t know how I’m supposed to thank you guys for all you’ve done for me,” you muttered, a small frown overtaking your face.

“What I tell you? You don’t gotta thank us, it’s what we do,” he smirked down at you.

“Right. The heroes of New York,” you murmured wryly.

“Damn right,” he grinned, stepping a little closer to you. His hand reached up and tucked some of your hair behind your ear and your heart felt like it stopped beating altogether at the tender gesture. His hand moved to cup your cheek, his thumb stroking it and you leaned into his touch as you just blinked up at him slowly. The air around you both felt weird, like a static charge surrounding you and you weren't quite sure what was going on as Billy seemed to get even closer. The door to the stairwell burst open and you jumped, both you and Billy turning to look at Karen and Frank as they stumbled through. Karen was giggling, Frank whispering something to her as he helped her down the hallway with an arm around her waist. When they passed you and Billy, Frank gave Billy a smug smirk and Billy groaned.

“Jesus Christ,” he huffed, watching as Frank tried to help Karen into their room. “Use a goddamn condom, Frankie!” Billy called out to them, making Frank bark a laugh before their door slammed shut. You covered your mouth with a grin, Billy turning to you with a snort.

“Need to soundproof their fuckin’ room,” he grumbled in jest. You smiled up at him, your eyes feeling heavy as you let out another yawn.

“Goodnight, Billy,” you murmured, wishing you didn't feel so tired so you could spend more time with him. His face softened then and he smiled at you, his dark brown eyes shining with warmth.

“Goodnight, Y/N,” he replied, squeezing your hand before letting you go into your room. You tiredly got undressed and into your pajamas before climbing into bed heavily. You felt so exhausted, mentally and physically. You tried to ignore the thoughts that crept in as you lay there about how this was your last night here. You were far too tired to deal with the emotions that brought you, you’d deal with that in the morning. You just allowed yourself to sink into the bed, savoring it for the last time. The Irish were no longer a threat to you and Dean’s justice had been served. And no one else had to get hurt in the process. You focused your mind on that as you relaxed and fell into a peaceful sleep wrapped in the duvet.

The next morning you were standing by your bed, fully dressed as you packed your bag. You were wearing the cozy cardigan, courtesy of Karen who had washed and dried it for you. You’d packed your other outfit and some toiletries, including your brush and the scissors. You’d chop your hair if it ever got unruly again and it had the added bonus of doubling as a weapon. You’d woken up far earlier than you’d like as your thoughts consumed you and you’d decided to have a shower and wash your hair for the last time. Your whole time here had been leading up to this moment of you finally being able to leave. But the excitement you once held for going back to where you belonged was tinged with an air of sadness. You weren't quite sure just when you’d gotten attached to this place. Well, maybe it was more some of the people here and not the place. You’d forged bonds with some of these people and you knew you’d miss them. But you told yourself you were being stupid, it wasn't like you’d never see them again. You couldn't just stay here, it wouldn't work. Your aversion to violence would make it hard and you didn't always agree with the things they did or the methods they used, as evidenced by what happened with Josh. You really didn’t want to have to go through that again. You were much better off where you should be, out there. You were just trying to stuff the hoodie in the backpack when your door opened without knocking. You glanced over your shoulder to see Billy come in and shut the door. He had a weird look on his face you couldn't quite read as he looked anywhere but at you.

“Karen… Karen said you’re leavin’ today,” he muttered. There was a hard edge to his voice that made dread twist up your stomach but you tried to push it away and told yourself you were being paranoid.

“Yeah,” you replied softly, turning back to zip up the bag and then moving to look at him. He looked tightly wound as he stood there with his hands in his hoodie pockets, working his jaw.

“You know you don't haveta leave. Could just stay here,” he shrugged, his tone implying that was the obvious solution.

It occurred to you then that you’d never really spoken to Billy about you leaving. You’d had those talks with Karen and Frank as they’d tried to convince you to stay but never with Billy. You just thought he knew you were planning on leaving once it was done because that had been the plan all along. And since he’d never brought it up like the others had, you thought he just got it and didn't see the need to try and talk you out of it. But now looking at his face, you knew you were wrong.

“I know I don’t have to but I want to,” you frowned, trying to keep your tone light. You were worried about his reaction with how tightly he was holding himself. He scoffed, shaking his head as his eyes finally met yours with a fiery determination in them.

“I don't get it. You got a roof over your head, a warm bed and food here and you're gonna go back out there in the cold to your little depressing alley?” he asked harshly, making you wince slightly at his tone. You tried not to get upset about it because as you watched him, he seemed upset and you really hadn't been expecting this reaction from him. You really didn't want to have a fight with him before you left, you were already feeling a little upside down yourself and this whole thing caught you off guard. And since this was Billy and you trusted him, you decided to just be honest with him and hope he would leave it alone.

“I don’t belong here, Billy. All this… this violence, I don’t like it. I’m not built for all of this. I’m not supposed to be here, I’m supposed to be out there. Everyone here has a purpose, a place, a job. I don’t have any of those things, I’m not one of you. I don’t have a reason to stay,” you shook your head, taking in how his face fell and he lowered his head. He rolled his shoulder, taking a shaky breath and shaking his head.

“What about me?” he asked lowly. You blinked at him for a moment and he raised his gaze back to you and you could see the hurt shining behind his almost black eyes. You felt like you’d been punched in the gut.

“You said you ain’t got a reason to stay, but I’m here,” he implored, eyes wide as they pinned you in place. You looked down, trying to will your heart to calm itself as you toyed with your hands in front of you. You cared about Billy. He was someone you felt like you could call a friend and that was a feat in itself. But even with him, you knew you didn't belong here. You knew it wouldn't ever work.

“It’s not like I’m leaving the state. You can come and visit me whenever you want,” you murmured lamely, not knowing what else to say to make him see sense. But the hurt on his face only increased at your words and he chuckled darkly, running his hands through his cropped hair.

“You’re really just gonna leave? After… after everything?” he lamented, an incredulous and offended look on his face. You swallowed hard again, trying to get rid of the lump forming in your throat. You knew how stubborn he could be and you knew you’d never change his mind on this. But you wouldn't be forced to stay somewhere you didn't want to be. You’d been trapped in here for far too long and your heart was calling out to the place you knew the most.

“I told you, Billy. I don’t belong here,” you muttered tensely as you wrapped your arms around yourself, feeling defensive. He rolled his shoulder again, eyes looking crazed for a brief moment before he shook his head. He didn't say another word, giving you a hurt and scathing look before he left and slammed your door so loud that it made you jump.

You stared at the door for a long moment as you willed yourself not to cry. You really hadn't wanted to leave with him on bad terms and you hoped some time apart would give him some clarity. You didn't fit in here, there was no purpose for you here. After trying to pull yourself together for a few moments, you slipped on the backpack and glanced around the room wistfully. Frank had told you that you were welcome to use it whenever you wanted, if you needed a shower or a warm room. You knew you wouldn't take him up on it, or at least not very often. You just wanted your life to be back to normal but it was slightly comforting to know there was a place here if you needed it. You knew none of them got your desire to leave but they weren't you. They didn’t understand how out of place you felt here. You heaved a sigh before leaving the room and trudging down the stairs feeling heavy and weighed down after your interaction with Billy. Part of you hoped he’d come to his senses before you left and you’d get a real goodbye from him. When you got downstairs, Karen, who had spotted your bag, made her way right over to you.

“You’re leaving already?” she asked, sounding disappointed.

“Yeah, figured I’d just get it over with,” you shrugged with a small smile. She nodded, giving you a sad smile as she bit her lower lip.

“Do I get a hug?” she asked sheepishly, a hopeful look on her face. You snorted, nodding at her and making her beam a smile before she gave you a light and brief hug. When she moved away, she had the sad smile back on her face.

“I’m gonna miss you. It’s been nice to have someone to talk to here,” she murmured.

“You could always tag along with Frank. He’s promised to bring me coffee and pancakes when he can,” you grinned impishly, making her smile. As if saying the man's name made him materialize out of thin air, Frank was suddenly next to you both.

“Headin’ out already?” he asked, glancing at your bag.

“Yep,” you replied awkwardly. He opened his mouth before promptly shutting it and something told you he was about to give you the same speech Billy had, but thought better of it.

“You know where we are if you need us, yeah?” he asked. He smiled but his eyes shone with concern and you nodded. He handed you something then and it took your brain a moment to register what it was as you took it.

“A phone?” you asked curiously.

“Burner phone. Put some minutes on it so if you need us… I put all our numbers on there. Can keep in touch better that way,” he explained.

“Thank you,” you murmured, a sincere smile on your face as you took your bag off and slipped it inside. You’d never owned a phone before and it felt a little strange, but the gesture touched you.

You ended up getting some more goodbyes off people. Curtis had come to speak to you and even Micro made sure to tell you goodbye. You hadn't even realized he’d stayed over the night given the fact you were in his old room but apparently, he’d bunked with Billy. Annie had given you a long goodbye and told you that you better turn up every once in a while to get a good home-cooked warm meal and it had made you smile. You even had some of the recruits come over to say goodbye and tell you to make sure you took care of yourself. You didn't even really know any of them but it touched you that they bothered at all. You lingered near the door with Frank and Karen and your eyes drifted over to the training area. Billy had been in the armory the whole time you were being showered with goodbyes and he’d only just come out. You hoped he’d come over too, at least say goodbye so you didn't leave things like this. But instead, his hard gaze had met yours for the briefest of moments before he settled himself on a bench in the training area and made a point of not even looking your way. Your sad eyes watched him for a moment and you felt the curious gazes of Karen and Frank burning into you but you ignored it.

“Alright then, I’m gonna head out,” you sighed, giving them the best smile you could muster.

“Want me to give you a ride?” Frank asked. You didn't miss how his eyes darted to Billy before back to you, a confused frown on his face.

“No thanks. I think the walk will do me good,” you murmured, making him nod.

“I’ll be seeing you guys,” you smiled, feeling a little awkward. You weren't quite used to the whole goodbye thing. They muttered their goodbyes once more before you slipped out of the door. You took a large breath of the fresh crisp air, trying to help it calm you down. This was what you had been craving this whole time yet each step made you feel heavier and heavier and you knew it was mostly Billy making you feel this way. You pushed your thoughts away though as you set off walking. You knew there was no point in dwelling on it. This was your life, how it had always been. You couldn't change yourself no matter who it was for. Besides, what purpose did a homeless ex-addict have in a place meant for heroes?

MY EYES WORK! 👏👏👏 Sorry it's just funny to me that I had to ask Doc to help me write something because of how bad my eyes got and then the next day or so I'm perfectly fine

I don't have much time to write because the sooner I finish this message the sooner I will get back to working on that project of mine, and since my eyes work again I can do the more complex parts that require seeing what I'm doing and checking if it matches the tutorial. But I wanted to tell you a few things!

Uhhh first of all it's so funny to me that every now and then Doc just goes "hang on gotta check if starrier posted yet" and even gets excited when seeing you've posted something, eagerly scrolling down to see if you've answered our asks etcetera, and yet this same mad scientist claims to view everyone in the world as a lab rat. My friend, at this point that's called liking someone at the very least! Anyway.

I have various things planned for the upcoming weeks and months and while it's partially stressing me out it's also exciting! Stuff like meeting up with people, parties with various people (imcluding a big one that I'll have to figure out if I can actually go to!) and more. I'm so hyped to see all those people again :D

About the drawings, once we find them we'll send another image album link (like Doc did with the cat pictures) in a separate ask so you can look at them. Feel free to show those on your blog if you ✨ deem them worthy enough ✨ to be on here

Oh! Doc also said you really need to rescue your cat from the "evil dragon's tower" but probably you already knew that, safe to say Doc approves. And thanks for showing all the pictures, I love them <3

An inevitable ending. for some of you, this has been going on for awhile. shit is crumbling because it has to. because it needs to so you can get to a more nurturing, loving, and stable part of your life.

A friend of mine just sent me some of your art tips and I loved them! Since I was a kid I could draw, but it was always a straight up copy of already finished drawings simply for the pure joy of drawing, but now I wanna draw on my own and I'm finding it very difficult! I'm still trying to figure out an artstyle, and I practice things alone (lips, eyes, nose) and they seem to be okay, but when I try to put them together on a face, it doesn't work, like the eyes is not the previous eyes I've been practicing and such. Do I need to practice the face as a whole? Am I doing something wrong?

Awesome, I’m so glad you like ‘em! Ah shit, look what you’ve done, you’ve made me practice anatomy (jkjk this is affectionate!)

In answer, yes absolutely you gotta practice the face as a whole! Don’t worry, most people start from just practicing individual facial features on their own! It’s super easy to tunnel vision! Those studies will also help you going forward, so it’s not time wasted!

A general disclaimer before I keep going: I went to school for animation and never took a proper anatomy class, so these are all tips and tricks I’ve either picked up along the way or figured out on my own. Take them with a grain of salt!

Ok first I think everyone’s seen a diagram of how to measure where facial features sit on the face so I’ll just copy/paste an image to get that out of the way. ***one thing to keep in mind is how the face is divided into thirds:

**** Important Note: Spend some time studying the skull too! For simplicity’s sake, here are some basic landmark parts of the structure you should be aware of:

Next, there’s three methods of drawing the head that I frankenstein together:

1) The Loomis Method is I think the easiest to start playing with head/face perspective drawings. Using the above method of dividing the head into thirds, we can put that on this super simple head model and rotate it in 3D.

2) For musculature, I like referencing the Reilly Method because the round shapes it uses help me understand how different parts squish into each other.

3) For painting/rendering ref, I really like using the Asaro Head because it really helps as reference on how lighting breaks up the planes of the face. (I’m still a ways away from publicly posting most paintings I’ve done tho) No demo for this one because painting takes me 84 yrs

*** One crucial thing I’d want to point out is that you should also practice drawing heads without painstakingly following measurements and guidelines. 1) everyone’s head/face are different and will have different proportions and 2) you want to get used to drawing without limiting yourself to one method as a crutch! These are all just tools to help you on your journey!

4) As far as simplifying the face goes, the pretty common way I’ve seen/used is to divide the head into two sections: the eyes and brow area, then the area below the cheekbones. This is where the bean face that everyone was mad about in 2015 comes from lololol (we’ve moved on from bean-hate, right? pls?)

One last note: Most of what I’ve posted on my blog has faces with floaty features, so don’t reference my stuff for your own good LMAO

Every Single Issue I Have With S*lki (It’s Not Just The Selfcest)

Here goes. I threatened to post this a few days ago and never did, but I just saw a s*lki stan Twitter account claim that Loki caring about Sylvie more than the whole multiverse was a Good And Romantic thing and it pushed me over the fucking edge, so now you all have to read this. I’ve divided it into categories cause there’s just THAT much.

OOC Bullshit

• First and foremost, no amount of mental gymnastics you do will ever make me believe that this specific Loki- the one that just invaded New York, that just came off a year of Thanos Torture, that just got done being influenced by the sceptre, that was literally in the middle of a crisis already, and then on top of that went through all the trauma of Ep 1- would even be worried about a romantic relationship. That would be the furthest thing from his mind. Go back and watch how he acted in Avengers- you think that guy would abandon his previous mission to become a snivelling simp for a girl he’d just met 3 days prior? Yeah, there’s no universe in which that makes sense.

• “It’s very in character for Loki to fall in love with himself lololol-“ NO, it’s literally not. Out of all the characters in the mcu, I don’t think I can think of anyone that genuinely hates themselves more than Loki. He even referred to all his other male variants as “monsters” and said meeting them was “a nightmare” in this series. He’s got so much self-loathing, plus the fact that he genuinely thinks himself to be an evil backstabbing scourge- so there’s no evidence at all suggesting that he would ever develop a fondness for, or even be inclined to trust, another version of himself, after only knowing them for 3 days.

• Building on that, the whole concept of Loki falling in love with a version of himself just feeds into the annoying ass misconception that he’s a narcissist. No matter which way you stack it, he’s not. If you’re referring to NPD, he doesn’t fit the criteria, and if you’re saying “narcissist” just as a slang term meaning “selfish and arrogant”, that still doesn’t accurately describe him. But when creators like Waldron and Herron do things like having him fall in love with himself, it makes it so much easier for casual viewers to think that he is.

Shitty LGBT Rep

• It’s kinda sus that Loki’s are allegedly genderfluid and yet the only female-presenting variant we see (and apparently the only female-presenting variant there is, cause the male Loki’s all seemed unfamiliar with the concept) is treated as some kind of mind-bogglingly special paradox. Also very sus that, out of all the Loki variants, the one our Loki falls in love with just so happens to be the only female one. What a coincidence.

• The fact that the creators of the show went around bragging about Loki’s bisexuality and Marvel purposefully (lbr) allowed stories about Loki possibly having a male love interest to circulate, specifically enticing queer viewers to watch the show (you know, the definition of queerbaiting), and then instead of having a male love interest (Loki was the first queer main character, so it was the perfect opportunity) they gave us *gestures to this dumpster fire* this… it’s just a middle finger to LGBT fans. The fact that they would rather have this relationship with all its myriad of problems than have a gay relationship is just……. Very telling.

• While him being with a woman obviously doesn’t refute his bisexuality, the fact that they showed/talked about him being interested in 3 different women (flight attendant, Sylvie, Sif) and never even hinted at him being attracted to a man, definitely makes it seem like they were trying to cover up his bisexuality to smooth things over with the more homophobic viewers. You know? It’s like “I know you’re pissed that we sorta confirmed Loki as bi, so we promise we’ll never mention it again! Or even hint at it! As a matter of fact, we’ll give him lots of female lovies and make him seem as straight as possible! That’ll take your mind off of that horrible crumb of queer rep, right? Please please please keep giving us your money!!!”

• Aside from all the other issues, at its core, the biggest reason why I think I’m so irritated with s*lki is that it took one of the most interesting, complex, and diverse characters in cinema atm and squished him into a tired ass unnecessary heteronormative subplot…. Like literally every. single. other. protagonist. ever. Loki is such a unique character, and it’s so so so incredibly disappointing that they stuck him into that same boring cookie cutter romance that happens to every other character in every other movie I’ve ever seen. It’s a disservice, and it’s honestly just not compelling or entertaining at all.

Thematic Issues Galore

• His arc didn’t need a romance. With anyone. It was unnecessary and it didn’t make sense plot-wise. In fact, one of the reasons he was my fav prior to this was because he was the only big-name mcu character whose story wasn’t muddied-up by a romance that didn’t need to be there. So much for that.

• He wasn’t emotionally ready for a romantic relationship with anyone. Hell, just a genuine friendship would’ve been pushing it for him at this point. He was in such a bad state that any relationship he got into would’ve been toxic and unhealthy for both him and the other person, and it doesn’t make sense why the writers would want to put him in one when there were so many cons and essentially no pros (other than “Uwu aren’t they cute together”).

• Sylvie’s character in general was unnecessary and Loki’s character was robbed just by her being there. The whole show became about her post-Ep 2. They spent most of the time giving her backstory, building her up, telling us how awesome she is, trying to convince us to like her, etc when what they really needed to be doing was building Loki up- cause I gotta say, if I had to describe TVA!Loki in a few words, they would be Flat, Boring, and Weak.

• The romance overtakes the plot. They spend time portraying their supposed connection that could’ve been spent adding depth and complexity to literally any of the characters. They make the big Nexus Event them giving each other googly eyes on Lamentis when it could’ve been so many other way more profound things that speak to the fundamental nature of Loki’s. They have the climax of the finale be “oh no she betrayed him to kill He Who Remains” when it could’ve been something way more compelling (Loki having a moral crisis over whether or not to kill HWR, Loki contemplating the state of the multiverse and weighing the pros and cons of freedom vs order, Loki looking into some What If situations and getting emotional about what could’ve been regarding his family, Loki realising the gravity of HWR’s offer and finally coming to terms with how important he is to the universal cycle, etc etc). The entire plot suffered in favour of a romance that half of us didn’t even want.

• It essentially reduced all of Loki’s potential character growth down to “He did it for his crush.” He seemed to at least have some motivations of his own in Ep 1-2 (feeble as they were) but after Sylvie showed up in Ep 3, literally every action he took was just him being a simp for her. Why did he lie in the interrogation? To try to protect Sylvie. Why did he fight the minutemen and Timekeepers? To survive kinda, but mostly cause it was important to Sylvie. Why did he get pruned? Cause he got distracted trying to confess his crush to Sylvie. Why did he try to get out of The Void? Cause he thought Sylvie needed him. Why did he stay in The Void? Cause Sylvie was staying. Why did he try to enchant Alioth? Cause Sylvie told him to. Why did the multiverse get cracked open, leading to an infinite number of Kangs waging war on all of existence? Cause Loki didn’t wanna hurt Sylvie in their fight at the Citadel and then get distracted by her kissing him. It’s uninteresting and honestly pretty embarrassing.

• Throughout their “relationship arc” the writers do their absolute damndest to convince us that we should like Sylvie more than Loki. And you know what? It’s the most hypocritical shit I’ve ever seen. They preach and preach about how Sylvie’s life has been so difficult/we should feel bad for her/she had it so bad/poor poor sylvie/she had it SO much worse than pampered prince Loki…. But then they never even touch on any of Loki’s trauma of hardships (the ones that have been ignored for literally 3 movies now). They frame Sylvie as a good person and a Freedom Fighter after she spent literal decades/centuries mass-murdering brainwashed TVA agents and showing exactly zero remorse for it….. but then they make it their mission to constantly remind us that Loki is a terrible person and constantly put him in situations where he’s forced to acknowledge his wrongdoings/show remorse/admit to how “evil” he is for being a mass murderer for like 2 years. They show him on-screen having a wider range of powers than her, and perpetuate his whole shtick of being a “master manipulator” or whatever….. But then they make Sylvie “the brawn” more competent, intelligent, and physically capable than him. Tell me how it’s a good thing for a ship to be so narratively biased toward one character.

Missed Opportunities

• If they absolutely had to have a romance subplot, then they could’ve paired Loki with one of the characters that have already been established OR one of the characters that were a big part of the whole TVA storyline anyway. It would’ve been so interesting if they’d revealed that Loki had a history with some of the players from previous films (Sif and Fandral both come to mind). It also would’ve been really interesting if they’d given Loki a love interest that actually had some allegiance to the TVA as a whole (Mobius maybe, but not necessarily. It also could’ve been Renslayer or B-15). Hell, imo it would’ve been cool if they’d followed through with that “See you again someday” line that he said to the flight attendant in Ep 1. ALL of these characters have way more chemistry with him than Sylvie, and they were also already relevant to the plot without wasting half the show to give background info on them.

• If they absolutely had to have a hetero-presenting love story involving an enchantress-type figure, then there’s a whole Enchantress (Amora) that was actually Loki’s love interest in the comics. Plus, fans have been screaming for Amora to appear in the mcu for years. Plus, Tom literally pitched an Amora/Loki storyline way back in 2012-13. Also, Lorelei (another enchantress) is also one of Loki’s love interests in the comics, and she already exists in the mcu (she was on Agents of SHIELD). There were several different established characters for them to choose from. Creating a whole knew amalgamation of a character and going with the “she’s a Loki variant” storyline was just completely unnecessary and made no sense.

• They completely robbed us of a Chaos Twins dynamic. Had they handled Sylvie better and not forced her and Loki to smooch, the two of them could’ve had a really really complex and interesting sibling relationship. Loki could’ve stepped into Thor’s shoes and sort of used that new role to gain some self importance, and Sylvie could’ve finally had somebody to look out for her/teach her magic/be there for her. It would’ve been very aesthetically pleasing, the vibes would’ve been out of this world, it would’ve been way more profound than this bs, and frankly it would’ve been much more entertaining to watch.

• Loki’s relationship (read: obsession) with Sylvie completely overshadows all Loki’s other relationships in the show. Loki and Mobius were literally the focal point of the series in Ep 1-2, but after Sylvie showed up in Ep 3, they barely had any interactions with each other, and Mobius pretty much faded to the background entirely. Loki had the beginnings of a pretty interesting antagonistic relationship with Renslayer (with her wanting him pruned, then arguing with Mobius that he couldn’t be trusted), but after Sylvie showed up the dynamic shifted to focus on the history between her and Ravonna. Loki and B-15 started off very badly and openly disliked each other throughout Ep 1-2, and then in the end of Ep 2, Loki showed a little bit of concern for her when she was possessed, hinting that they might be inching toward a reconciliation- especially considering how obvious it was that Loki was gonna uncover the TVA’s sins eventually. There was so much potential for him to be the one to give her her memories back and convince her to change sides, but no, of course that honor went to Sylvie. In fact, after Sylvie showed up, Loki and B-15 never even spoke to each other again.

Various S*lki Fails

• If they were trying to convince us that this affection was mutual, they completely failed. There’s nothing I’ve seen that even hints at Sylvie feeling the same way about Loki that he does about her. At most, I’d say she has a slight endearment to him. She finds him likeable and she’s grudgingly fond of him, but she definitely isn’t in love with the guy. Maybe she thinks he’s cute and hopes that he gets out of this mess alright, but her mission obviously comes before him- whereas, it’s been confirmed multiple times that Loki cares about her above anything else. She doesn’t trust him, she looks at him like he’s an incompetent fool half the time, she shows little to no reaction during most of his confession moments, and she kissed him as a means to distract him so that she could get him out of her way. Look, all I’m saying is, when you get into a relationship where one of you is way more invested than the other, it never ends well.

• This goes without saying for a lot of us, but the selfcest is just straight up odd and cringey. If you’re cool with that sort of thing, fine! People can ship what they want! But don’t pretend it’s not at least a little bit uncomfortable. Yes, I know they’re not technically siblings so it’s not technically incest, and they’re also not technically the exact same person, but they’re similar enough that it makes things weird. And yes I know selfcest can’t happen in real life, so there’s no way to judge it morally, but neither can most of the other stuff that happens in these shows/movies (the Snap, Loki destroying jotunheim, superhero with powers being held accountable, mind control) and yet we still find ways to judge their morality, because they all mirror real-world events. (The snap= genocide; Loki destroying Jotunheim= bombing other countries; superhero accountability= weapons accountability; mind control= grooming and coercion). And lbr the closest real-world mirror to two versions of the same person (who may or may not share DNA, family, backgrounds, physical and emotion characteristics) being romantically involved with one another is incest. And you can be ok with that if you want- that’s your prerogative- but don’t get pissy just cause a lot of us are squicked out by it.

• The whole mirror metaphor (learning self love via each other) thing just fell completely flat. First of all, having Loki learn to love himself by looking at someone who mirrors him did not, in any way shape or form, require them to be romantically involved. But they were. Of course. Secondly, the creators have contradicted themselves so many times on whether Loki and Sylvie are the same or not, that it doesn’t even really register to the viewer that the mirroring thing was what they were going for. Finally, Loki and Sylvie are shown to have so little in common- and to have only the most bare minimum of similarities personality-wise- that it doesn’t even make sense that Loki would “learn to love himself through loving her”. Like? They’re nothing alike. So how would he make the connection that he himself is actually pretty cool, based on her alone? There’s virtually nothing in her that reflects him.

• I know the objective of the entire show was to convince us of how awesome and unique Sylvie is, but honestly her relationship with Loki just did the opposite. A hallmark of a Mary Sue is having her constantly upstage the male lead, and then having him instantly fall madly in love with her anyway. And that’s.. exactly what happened here. Everything they’re doing to try to force her character to be more stan-able is really just forcing her to look more like their self-insert OC. Which is exactly what she is. It would’ve been so much more satisfying if she didn’t have to try so hard to look cool, if they didn’t have to try so hard to make her backstory tear-inducing, if they didn’t have to turn our protagonist into a snivelling simp just to prove how incredible she supposedly is. Very much #GirlBoss energy and we all know how performative and cheap that is.

• The entire thing was too rushed, there was too little build-up, and it was nowhere near believable. As stated above, it’s ridiculously unlikely that Loki would canonically even be interested in Sylvie, and this show did nothing to explain why he was. He just suddenly was. There was nothing they showed us as viewers that would justify a guy as closed-off and preoccupied as Loki falling head-over-heels for a girl he just met. Their was no explanation, no big revelation, no reasoning, it just… kinda happened. And I’m also severely skeptical of any love story that has the characters go in this deep after only 3 45-minute episodes of exposition.

[ . . . my man gots to be the most normal one out off everyone 😭 it's not like he doesn't care, he's so proud of you, he just naturally keeps his excitement on the down low. loves watching you play, is literally mesmerized... like have y'all seen him watch the other members play and when they score he's just like 😦 LIKE HOW CUTEEEE def goes to every one of your games and is sad when he can't go because of his schedule. plays with you even though he isn't the greatest, he still puts up a pretty decent fight if you ask me! you taught him how to shoot and he was so excited when he finally got it awww he jumped up and down like u gotta be kiddin me bruh he takes great care of you and almost never leaves your side </3 you winning always surprises him no matter how many times it happens. will always throw you over your shoulder and run around because he's just THAT happy </333

[ . . . have y'all seen him play T3T literally junkyu 2.0 but with a little bit more knowledge than him. is more on the quiet side at your games but will occasionally shout words of encouragement to you. things like "you got this y/n!" or "push through, babe!" loves seeing how passionate you are about winning and he's so... in love!!! </3 when you got injured, mans was heart broken. literally dropped everything and ran to you as quickly as possible. tries his best to make you as comfortable as you can be wherever you are. when you win... he hits you with the :3 because he's having a harder time verbalizing it but you know that he's so.. so.. SOOO happy about your accomplishments. pulls you to the side and tells you how proud he is of you </33!!

[ . . . park jihoon 2.0!!! tries not to show his cockiness but you're so good that he's got to let everyone know that you're his s/o!!! always like "yeah... the one that scored the winning shot... that's my s/o!!!" when you point him out in a crowd, he always goes "ehhhhhh" waving you off and giving you a thumbs up. tries to make it to every game and if he can't, asks you to update him when you're finished. showers you in love and praise even if you do or don't win. doesn't really know what to do to help you when you do get injured but he tries his best and does everything you ask of him. when you win he always and i mean ALWAYS hits you with the "i knew you'd win!" along with a big bear hug awww

[ . . . cocky to the mf MAX... i guess you could say it's from love tho?? enjoys seeing you play and loves watching a different you come out. it's really amazing to see and it makes him pumped. he goes to every other game, his schedule packed and you know that. does the same thing as yedam and asks you to tell him everything that happened. absolutely hates seeing you hurt whether it's small or an actual serious injury. it breaks his heart but he pushes it aside to be your rock <3 loves the smile on your face when you win because he's the first person you try to find and that makes him absolutely devastated bc... he's so madly... deeply... and utterly in love with you. oh also, even though he can't come to every single game, he made a deal to go out to eat after every single one, you choice ofc!!

[ . . . yk when he screams and it's all high pitched? yeah... exactly what he does when he watches you play. it earns him some funky looks but he literally gives zero shits because look!! at!! you!! go!! so proud and makes it very clear to you by coming to every single game he can go to. brings the j-line along and they're always screaming for you, cheering you on in their own way. they're like like cheerleaders </3 one time you pointed out to haruto after making a basket and he got so blushy and sent you a hand heart back </3 also, this one time, ruto did the exact same thing as you when playing a game on one of his days off and he missed the basket 😭 tries to lighten up your mood when you get injured and calls you his "clumsy baby" <3 when you win, this mf is SCREAMING!!! claps loud and has the biggest, most brightest smiles on his face!!!

[ . . . played 1v1 with him and he lost... 😭🤭 literally hit you with the "i haven't played iN AWHILE THAT'S WHY >:(!!!!" and that got your ass rolling on the floor bc this sucka really tried it LMAO has never missed a game and is always there early to get good seats. brings ruto and junghwan along and the three are so loud that you have to shush them. you literally run across the court and they're like "Y/N YES WE LOVE YOU WHOOP WHOOPPP!!" like keep it down you bozos 😭 one time you got injured, luckily it wasn't too serious but he carried you around like his life depended on it. spoiled and pampered you to death but who's really complaining 🤨 so happy when your team wins, literally screams... no words... just screaming but yk what, you'll take what you can get because he treats you out to eat afterwards <3

[ . . . super king cow baby is always giving you pep talks before hand like he's your coach 😭 screams as loud as he cans to show you his support even if it's incoherent to you, you know it's him and that gives you more motivation lolzies!!! writes your jersey number down like junkyu and brings hand-drawn signs with your name on it. always goes to your games and sometimes bring his hyungs along and cause more ruckus but who's surprised at this point??? suckas are LOUD MFS!!! when you get injured, he has no clue what to do... almost like brain empty but once you tell him he's kinda like.. OH OK HAHA LOL and helps you out with whatever you need. when you win, he's literally pick you up and put you on his shoulders while chanting your name. it's happened so many times but it always catches you off guard which is another reason why he loves to do it 😭
