"In the past several weeks there have been raids on several outlying towns of the Barony by mysterious golden marauders. Whether these creatures are robots, mutants or men, none can be sure for reports are scarce." New Release Heart of Chentoufi Luke Gygax
The Oculus of Senrahbah is one of four ancient and powerful relics used centuries ago by the Ydrissid Empire used to grant them control over the four elements - in a similar, but more powerful manner used by the Zenoks of Chentoufi today. The Oculus traded owners several times and its exact whereabouts were unknown until it was discovered by a group of Jhe'dhari cultists in the City of Chentoufi. The group referred to themselves as The Oracle of Natatorial Verisimilitude, or simply The Oracle, discovered this powerful artifact in the Kennat, or undercity, below Chentoufi.

I spent two years deep diving into D&D, learning all the rules and listening to every. single. episode. of Critical Role, Dungeons and Daddies, and most of Dimension 20.
That was before I even played a single game.
I eventually found a group of my own to play with every Wednesday night (and we really did show up 3 out of 4 weeks each month).
I signed up to play a one-shot with Luke Gygax and had an absolute blast. Made a good friend through the experience who invited me to write for his game company.
So now I'm writing a one-shot of my own that will go out on Kickstarter later this year.
Amazing right?
Except I absolutely hate writing this. There are SO MANY RULES and I hate it.
Not the magic rules, or the class rules, or the dice rules. I love those. I love this game.
But the formatting rules, the rules around how you tell a professional D&D story. The difference between writing On a Success vs If They Succeed. The way my writing includes too much prose for a TTRPG style.
I really hope my love for the game survives these revisions, because lord knows I'm going to need a little escapism at the end of this.
Someone remind me it's going to be okay and that I can hit my deadline without crying too much. Pls and thx.

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords, ya filthy animal! While it's not animated, Home Alone is technically Disney now that they've bought 20th Century Fox (and let's face it, we're eventually doing Hocus Pocus and Haunted Mansion, so "not animated" isn't a dealbreaker). What's more, in a world where a magical wish really can make your family disappear, Kevin is a perfect darklord trapped in a hell of his own creation--and ready to put your PCs in that hell, too. Topics discussed include:
How to get your PCs to go into Kevin's little funhouse so they get all tore up, even though they presumably won't be tempted by promises of stereos, VCRs, and toys;
Suggestions for translating Kevin's sadistic traps into their equally sadistic D&D equivalents (with some inspiration from the master of "up yours" traps, Gary Gygax);
Alternate versions of Kevin and his house with a variety of different tones, from "heartwarming holiday special about family" to "cathartic beatdown of a spoiled, hateful man-child;"
The challenges of adapting a film where the wish-fulfillment power fantasy character is the darklord and the hapless victims are the PCs;
And more!
The full writeup for the McElminster house is available for free on DM's Guild: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/461188/The-McElminster-House-A-Ravenloft-Domain-of-Dread?affiliate_id=241770

Bingo cards from the inimitable @dusty-purple are available here: https://bingobaker.com/#65799823d1221317 Play along!
Book Club of Dread absolutely will not be ready December 20th (very optimistic view of your editing powers there, Past Rachel), but we're going to move heaven and earth to make sure it's out by Epiphany so the Christmas Bellringer is still appropriate. For the Christmas Bellringer, you want roughly equal parts ginger beer and orange juice OR roughly equal parts gin, ginger beer, and orange juice; adjust the proportions to taste. Please, we beg you, go slow if you add the gin. The ginger beer will hide the flavor of the gin, you will forget you aren't drinking a mocktail, and your bell will get rung if you pour yourself a big ol' glass with the intention of nursing it over a couple hours. This stuff makes Hocus Pocus Punch look like chocolate milk.
All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:
Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 9 No.1 (main theme), performed by Eduardo Vinuela
Chopin Etude Op. 25, No. 12 in C Minor: “Ocean” (darklord theme), performed by Edward Neeman
Chopin Nocturne in F Minor, Op. 55 No. 1 (land theme), performed by Luke Faulkner
Rachmaninoff Morceaux de Fantaisie, Op. 3 - 2. Prélude in C sharp minor (Dread Possibilities), performed by Sergei Rachmaninoff
Chopin Nocturne in E Minor, Op. 72 No. 1 (parting thoughts), performed by Luke Faulkner

Cautiously optimistic about the new D&D movie, Honor Among Thieves. The first attempt at a D&D movie was...not good. And the second attempt was so forgettable that most people don’t even realize there was a second D&D movie.
I’m not the biggest Forgotten Realms fan, but I do love that the movie is anchored in the lore of an existing setting, and honestly Forgotten Realms is the easiest one to do it with for many reasons. There’s a huge potential audience of people who have perhaps not played D&D, but who have read novels or played videogames set in the Forgotten Realms.
(Maybe if things go well, maybe some day, Ravenloft. People are still way horny for Strahd, right?)
The trailer does look very promising. And yeah, action comedy is just...always going to be a solid approach to D&D. You don’t set out to make a D&D movie and make Game of Thrones. That’s The Last Airbender levels of bad idea, in my opinion. Because it’s not representing D&D if the joy of the game isn’t there.
(I mean, unless it’s Ravenloft...joy is not the vibe you go for there.)
These are some predictions I’ve made based on what I’ve seen in the trailer:
(Not spoilers per se, since they’re just educated guesses, but under the cut anyway.)
The stolen artifact shown in several shots might be the Horn of Orcus, so I’m guessing the “greatest evil” in danger of being unleashed would be the Orcus (I forget if he’s a god per se or just a demon lord in Forgotten Realms, godhood can be strangely flimsy in that setting).
That’s a whole lot of Red Wizards. Clearly the Red Wizards of Thay are going to be one of the primary antagonists.
Thay’s got a lot of liches, but as far as I know the biggest one in their number is Ssaz Tam. So that’s possibly him they show briefly.
Also wasn’t my notice, but Chris Pine’s bard is wearing a Harpers pin on his blue cloak in several shots, indicating there’s more to him than just being a mere thief.
At least part of this looks to take place in the Underdark. Specifically the duergar city of Graklstugh, because that extra chonky red dragon at the end is probably Themberchaud. (Honestly just stumbled across this guy’s stats in Out of the Abyss tonight while prepping for a game for my family, and it prompted me to post this.)
They’ve teased a cameo by a “well known D&D player. While a lot of people are speculating Matt Mercer or another one of the CritRole crowd, my money is on Joe Manganiello. They’d probably have to beat him away from a D&D movie with a stick. And not saying they would necessarily go this route, but Arkhan the Cruel is actually part of Forgotten Realms canon as of Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus. So  they could even just have him in the movie as that character. That’s a cameo that could be expanded into an actual role later on. Other possible cameos though that crossed my mind: Michelle Rodriguez is in this, so maybe Vin Diesel? Deborah Ann Woll has done a lot of games on D&D’s official channel. She’s a possibility. Possibly Luke Gygax, but that’d be a cameo only the real diehards would notice. I know I wouldn’t recognize him by sight.
I’m going to go into the movie expecting at least one main character to die. It’s D&D.
Not a predictions, just opinions:
I know it’s technically the source canon for Forgotten Realms, but did they really have to go with the most boring design possible for a tiefling?
I’m pretty fucking asexual, but Michelle Rodriguez barbarian suplexing a guy in full armor makes something in my brain go brrr.
Technically druids can’t wildshape into owlbears. They’re monstr- (Nope, not going to be one of those people.)

Asking a D&D exec YOUR questions about the OGL
Truly, the best interview on this subject that I’ve seen on the whole OGL kerfuffle. Ginny asks direct questions that are respectful yet have the sufficiently and justifiably indignant tone of one who has been wronged. I particularly applaud how she interjects a commentary when an answer is weak or obvious pure PR bullshit. Teos Abadía interviewed this same dude over at Mastering Dungeons, and the servile pussyfooting on that one was so incredibly obvious that it re-ignited my disgust for the company.
So:
- that phrase “saying irrevocable might not be good enough, because people might not even take our word for that!" well of course! what did WoTC / Hasbro expected after they PRECISELY were caught trying to revoke the original legal document that granted those precise rights to the public? they’re backpedaling hard on this one and the “it was a draft” argument, but the evidence we have been presented against it is way more solid.
- a microtransaction based economic model is still going to be a thing in D&D’s future. They already sell scammy NFTs with Power Rangers and that whole Magic: the Gathering 30th anniversary $1000 USD reprint of random 60 old cards that are not even valid for play.
- VTT and all personalized digital content will be difficult or restricted for individual creators.
- They are obviously pandering to a progressive audience with statements such as “we are trying to protect the brand from hateful content”. Wizards is so far, the only creator in hot water for publishing racist depictions. Yeah, notorious bad actor Ernest “Ernie” G. Gygax (one of the original DnD creators son, not to be confused with Luke Gygax) makes a bunch of bigoted and racist remarks, but the whole tabletop RPG community is well aware and distances off him. If they were really interested in creating a welcoming envioroment for all race and gender identities, what needs to be done is hire and consult more creatives in that area, supervise those who already work there and review the content before publishing.
