Canon/Headcanon likelihood chart

So I've been thinking about @macdenlover 's "levels of headcanon" chart (about how heavily a HC is influenced by canon), so I decided to make my own scale about how likely a HC is to be true (including different levels of canon) using queer cartoon characters as examples :)

I just spent an hour making this because I was bored. Enjoy. Image description under the cut.

I refuse to believe in the "sequel" of the Megamind. It doesn't exist in my universe.

I find it really interesting at the start of Megamind, during his monologue about his childhood, he refers to his actions as evil. But they’re like, very not? 

He’s treated like a criminal for simply ‘growing up’ in the prison. They never try to take him out or put him with another family. Because he’s associated with the criminals, even as a hyper intelligent baby, he’s put into their category. They don’t even give him different clothes to go to school, they let him sit there in prison orange. That would be socially isolating, especially when he hasn’t even committed a crime. It really demonstrates the nature vs nurture aspect of the movie, because even though he hasn’t committed a crime yet, people assume the worst of him just because of where he came from.

When he first goes to school, he uses the only skill that makes sense to him. He tries to connect with his class mates through technology, something he’s confident in. He accidentally causes a fire trying to recreate something Metro man did effortlessly. Megamind in the future views this attempt as evil and he’s punished as a child for it, when the fire wasn’t deliberate or done with ill intent. 

The same thing happens when he tries to protect himself from being bullied. He’s put on his own dodgeball team and isolated further from his class mates. He again tries to use his skills but create a helmet to deflect the balls, which doesn’t go the best way as he breaks a window and nearly hits the teacher. We can assume these kinds of things happened many times before he actively tried to do something ‘evil.’ 

Even his first act of evil is just a blue smoke bomb. You see loads of bad boy stereotypes do pranks like this, think Bart Simpson. At best, he’s doing an overblown childhood rebellion. He’s by no means a malicious person, he just wants acceptance. And when it becomes clear that people are not willing to accept him, but criminals are, he embraces that side and internalises their behaviours and beliefs throughout his life.

Even when he is ‘evil,’ it seems more like a game. A way to prove himself to others. He thinks that’s what’s going to complete this empty feeling in him he’s had ever since being socially rejected. Minion says that Megamind is happy when they kidnap Roxanne, I think it’s only because he enjoys having social connection, even if it’s through being evil or pretending to be somebody else.

So, SO honoured to have been part of @hmosexymanzine !! For my piece I wanted to make a ref to sexyman character tournament polls, so here is our beloved Once-ler, the OG tumblr sexyman, going back in for the fight while being supported by a few notable colleagues..😇

As a total departure from the warm tones of my previous Once-ler zine pieces [link] [link], I decided to do a piece with cool tones this time :3

Admittedly I didn't have many ideas, except that I had been wanting to draw a beaten up Once-ler again for YEARS now and I figured this would be a perfect opportunity because this is a SEXYman zine and he's HOT like that...and that I also wanted to make a comfort piece (beyond just beating him up). And what I remembered was how shocking the infamous 2022 Sexyman Tournament poll on twit had been for us in the onceler fandom...because the Once-ler had lost SO early on?? In the very first round, to Megamind!!

We were so sad.

So I thought, what if, instead of pitting characters against each other, they supported each other instead? Let's show some respect for the original, very first tumblr sexyman! So then I drew this self-indulgent piece.

Apart from the Once-ler, I included 5 other sexymen: the 4 from the semifinals of the 2022 poll, and Megamind who was the one who had won directly against Once-ler. You've gotta look very closely to see Bill Cipher.

I gave Once-ler a signet ring, along with the crown and cigar, to make it feel like he's of high status - because he is! He's an important figure in fandom history.

The other sexymen (other than Bill Cipher) were drawn only as their arms as a nod to the original Lorax book where the Once-ler is only shown as a pair of arms. But I still tried to keep everyone in-character! One of my favourite decisions was to make Sans' lighter flame blue, just like how a lot of people like to draw him with a flaming blue eye in fanart ;) The lighter being pink was also a nod to his pink slippers.

And of course, a tumblr brand cigar, to stick with the theme of respecting our origins.

I think there's not much else to say...I played it safe by not being too ambitious this time with my zine piece for the sake of my health haha but I think I still like how it turned out! I was so lucky to have been asked to be a guest artist for this zine, I'm very humbled to have my art be placed alongside so many other amazing creators and all the mods were so lovely too! And I guess this piece has another meaning in that the Once-ler fandom will keep coming back again and again no matter how much we get beaten up. You'll never see the last of us. 😌
