What's most (least?) shocking ot me is that all the students in those pictures look exactly like MIT students today, 30 years later. Overworked Nerd really is a timeless look, huh?
So today I learned there was someone, Steve Mann, who walked around in the 90s livestreaming their life wearing gear like this

The streams (of photos) looked like this

The use and role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within artistic communities has continued to be a major concern. Initially, AI was almost a novelty – something that would be used for fun. It had overt flaws and issues with generating realistic or convincing imagery. Yet it learned how to accurately mimic and replicate convincing imagery in such a short period. I find this to be fascinating. One…

Digging into Design by Numbers in between finishing up Creative Code. Feels a bit like finding something which was missing.
You can find more about Design by Numbers here, and the software still works (ran it on my Windows 11), see video below: running an example code by Tom White.

Researchers have found that ChatGPT "power users," or those who use it the most and at the longest durations, are becoming dependent upon — or even addicted to — the chatbot. In a new joint study, researchers with OpenAI and the MIT Media Lab found that this small subset of ChatGPT users engaged in more "problematic use," defined in the paper as "indicators of addiction... including preoccupation, withdrawal symptoms, loss of control, and mood modification." To get there, the MIT and OpenAI team surveyed thousands of ChatGPT users to glean not only how they felt about the chatbot, but also to study what kinds of "affective cues," which was defined in a joint summary of the research as "aspects of interactions that indicate empathy, affection, or support," they used when chatting with it. Though the vast majority of people surveyed didn't engage emotionally with ChatGPT, those who used the chatbot for longer periods of time seemed to start considering it to be a "friend." The survey participants who chatted with ChatGPT the longest tended to be lonelier and get more stressed out over subtle changes in the model's behavior, too. Add it all up, and it's not good. In this study as in other cases we've seen, people tend to become dependent upon AI chatbots when their personal lives are lacking. In other words, the neediest people are developing the deepest parasocial relationship with AI — and where that leads could end up being sad, scary, or somewhere entirely unpredictable.

I think you can tell a lot about the economic health of a country by how early and how hard they try to convince engineers to enter private practice. We had a Courting Venture Capital class at multiple points during our undergrad.

Midnight Pals: Machine Movies
Darren Aronofsky: hey it's me Darren aronofsky, the doyenne of psychological horror Aronofsky: you may remember me from such innovative psychological horror concepts like Aronofsky: "what if you had some really annoying houseguests" Aronofsky: or Aronofsky: "what if a guy was really fat"
Aronofsky: but then I realized Aronofsky: why am i wasting my time thinking of ideas like a chump? Aronofsky: a computer could do that just as good as i could Poe: King: Koontz: Lovecraft: Barker: Barker: please by all means Barker: tell us more Poe: clive
Barker: ya know Barker: my favorite kind of own Barker: is the self-own Barker: like, i don't even have to say anything
Aronofsky: i was thinking about how i made that scary movie about a big fat guy Aronofsky: and then i was on deviantart and i saw there was all this AI-generated art of big fat women eating cake Aronofsky: and i thought "wow, these people sure do appreciate the horrifying psychological terror of the fat body" Poe: King: Barker: Koontz: Lovecraft: Aronofsky: and that gave me an idea
Aronofsky: art, one of mankind's greatest achievements, is quickly becoming more popular with each passing day Aronofsky: i invite you to follow along as our scientists work to conceive of a future where art is not made by man but by machine Aronofsky: movie groups of tomorrow are made up of several entities Aronofsky: computers Aronofsky: pneumatic directors Aronofsky: humans who tolerate machines
Aronofsky: this is going to be the biggest innovation in AI-generated horror since MIT media lab invented Shelley AI Mary Shelley: what Aronofsky: well researchers at MIT invented Shelley: i fucking heard you the first time Shelley: it wasn't a clarification what
Aronofsky: see, researchers at MIT invented a mary shelley bot and Mary Shelley: [shivs aronofsky] Poe: mary! it wasn't HIS bot! Shelley: fuck that shit Shelley: if there's one thing i can't stand, it's a fuckin messenger
Aronofsky: did you see my new AI-generated movie? Barker: well i was going to Barker: but then i thought Barker: why waste time watching a movie like a chump? Barker: when i could just get the AI to watch it and summarize it for me Aronofsky: Shelley: my guy makes a strong point
Aronofsky: Aronofsky: so did you read the AI-generated summary of my movie? Barker: well i was going to Barker: but then i thought Barker: why am i wasting time reading a summary like a chump? Barker: when i could just get the AI to summarize the summary
Barker: I got the AI to summarize the summary of the summary Barker: so now I've got it down to one word Aronofsky: what's the word? Barker: one sec, i'll get the AI to summarize it for you Aronofsky: i don't need to take this kind of mockery Aronofsky: i'm Darren Aronofsky, award-winning creator of "The Whale" and "Mother!" Aronofsky: i made your childhood depressing!
Aronofsky: don't forget the exclamation mark in mother(!) btw Aronofsky: it denotes excitement
Aronofsky: great news! Aronofsky: I've got the AI summarizing things so efficiently that I don't ever have to experience a sensation ever again Thomas Ligotti: god i wish that was me

Does ChatGPT harm critical thinking abilities? A new study from researchers at MIT’s Media Lab has returned some concerning results.
The study divided 54 subjects—18 to 39 year-olds from the Boston area—into three groups, and asked them to write several SAT essays using OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s search engine, and nothing at all, respectively. Researchers used an EEG to record the writers’ brain activity across 32 regions, and found that of the three groups, ChatGPT users had the lowest brain engagement and “consistently underperformed at neural, linguistic, and behavioral levels.” Over the course of several months, ChatGPT users got lazier with each subsequent essay, often resorting to copy-and-paste by the end of the study.
The paper suggests that the usage of LLMs could actually harm learning, especially for younger users. The paper has not yet been peer reviewed, and its sample size is relatively small. But its paper’s main author Nataliya Kosmyna felt it was important to release the findings to elevate concerns that as society increasingly relies upon LLMs for immediate convenience, long-term brain development may be sacrificed in the process.
“What really motivated me to put it out now before waiting for a full peer review is that I am afraid in 6-8 months, there will be some policymaker who decides, ‘let’s do GPT kindergarten.’ I think that would be absolutely bad and detrimental,” she says. “Developing brains are at the highest risk.”
