Hmmm I know octopuses are generally sweet and gentle and are just curious sea puppies (and I love them!), that being said, the thoughts of being dragged by my feet by one of them into the deep and dark ocean is… safe to say new fear has been unlocked

Happy Mother’s Day to the cephalopods that put their whole OCTOPUSSY into motherhood 🐙

Once laid, they stay with their eggs, blowing warm water on them, and guarding them until they hatch. Which can take weeks to months to even years for some deep sea species living in colder water.

Once the eggs hatch they release an enzyme that lets the mother know it’s time to go, she sacrifices herself and gives her babies one good meal before they swim off at the mercy of the ocean currents

I tried something new!

Usually when I edit photos I'm aiming to make things as life-like as possible but I've recently decided to challenge myself to play with color and different tools in PhotoPea. I'm really excited with how this one came out.

I used color to alpha (a lot), hue/saturation, color balance, invert colors, and posterize in a bunch of different layered iterations for different parts of the image til I ended up with the final piece, which I'm really delighted by.

The original photo is of a ruby octopus I got to see this summer while doing research.
