What if Anakin broke off his connection to the dark side & ran away with Padmé? Padmé.2008’s Mustafar AU!Part 1

Notes- in this AU, Obi-wan decided to remain on Padmé’s ship and figured he would observe Padmé and Anakin’s interaction. He promised himself that he would only intervene if it seemed Anakin was losing control. After all, Obi-wan knew his trust with Anakin had been shaken, due to the Rako Hardeen incident and him asking Anakin to spy on the Chancellor. Also, I am pretending that none of the Rush Clovis incidents from season 2 and 6 of the Clone Wars ever occurred, as I am against the strained, tense portrayal of Anakin and Padmé’s relationship in the Clone Wars and do not agree that Padmé would just let Clovis sexually assault her. You can have your own opinions and I will respect that, but please do not argue back or make any rude comments. Now, I hope you enjoy:

Darkness, death and destruction swirled around in the Force. It clouded Anakin’s vision. It poisoned his heart.

The once respected Hero with No Fear was nearing the point of no return. He had committed many horrendous atrocities. He was partially responsible for introducing the Galaxy to an era of dictatorship and darkness. And now, he is dimming the light and hope radiating from the love of his life.

At Padmé’s desperate words “Come back, I love you!” Anakin’s suppressed jealously and insecurity bubbled to the surface, his eyes transforming into a sickly amber hue.

“You love me?” He scoffed at a bewildered Padmé. “Then why aren’t you willing to become a part of my new Empire that will secure your safety? I’ve sacrificed everything for you. I’ve set everything aflame. But then you run away to Obi-wan!” Anakin thundered, his voice booming with an eery coldness.

Padmé, usually standing tall despite her petite stature, shrunk back in fear and disgust of what the man before her had become. Where had the compassionate, curious man she loved so dearly disappeared to? Tears continued to stream down her pale face in response to her internal queries that would likely remain unanswered for some time. And then there was the fact that she was puzzled at the mention of Obi-wan.

“Yeah, I see you’re thinking about him. I can sense him in your ship now. I see you are finally running away from me to be with your one true love!” Anakin barked, a scowl settling over his fatigued face, his hands clenching tensely. He looked as enraged as the bubbling lava that flowed all over Mustafar.

“Anakin…I…” Padmé trailed off and fiddled with her brown braid nervously. She was petrified of the man before her. She kept praying that this was all a dark dream of a twisted, terrible universe. She kept trying to gather courage to calm this stranger down. She kept trying to imagine that it was a crooked, cold-hearted clone of Anakin before her. But all Padmé could do was realise that this was reality. A kriffed-up reality. A reality where her beloved Ani had become all she swore to protect innocent lives against, ever since she entered the field of public service at the young age of eight.

“I only love Anakin Skywalker. With my whole heart. But you are not him. My Ani would never accuse me of anything. My Ani would never succumb to the dark side. My Ani would never slaughter innocents.” Padmé wept, her chocolate eyes now becoming red raw and puffy from crying up a whole sea worth of tears.

Anakin’s glowing eyes widened at her words. His eyes then returned to their normal cerulean blue. He was slowly coming to his senses at Padmé’s passionate words and the sight of her sobbing uncontrollably. Noticing this and the way she stumbled away from him as he took a step closer, her arms wrapped protectively around her swollen stomach, led Anakin to freeze. As did the warm, familiar presence piercing into his consciousness.

“Anakin. Snap out of it. This is your last chance to prove to Padmé you are still the love of her life, not an irredeemable monster.” A gruff, yet gentle voice whispered to his muddled mind.

At Qui-gon’s words, Anakin’s knees gave way and he collapsed to the ash-covered ground. His eyes drooped shut like a Milla flower withering away. He forced himself to disconnect from the Force, at least temporarily, so he did not have to feel the death, destruction and chaos he had helped spread across the Galaxy like a deadly disease.

Anakin Skywalker had resurfaced, Vader retreating to the depths of his mind. And with the resurrection of the Chosen One came an onslaught of emotions. Fear. Grief. Guilt. Deep, deadly regret gnawed at Anakin, and he knew that life would never be the same. He had murdered so many innocents. He had betrayed all he stood for. He had led half of his dear 501st clones into the Temple massacre, knowing full well they were being controlled like slaves. He had broken the hearts of Obi-wan and Ahsoka. He had ruined his mother’s legacy. And the thought that stood out to him the most was that he had forever damaged his relationship with Padmé and his unborn child.

Anakin felt his breathing become raspy as his eyes begun flooding with tears. He felt his heart thumping as violently as an explosion. His body also begun shaking and sweating as if he was battling a sandstorm.

Kriff, he thought, frustrated. I need to apologise profusely to Padmé and assure her I love her more than anything and now I’m having a panic attack!

“What have I done?” Anakin whimpered, his hands clutching his dark, dirty blond hair for dear life.

He felt as if his heart was going to leap out of his chest as his mind replayed the bloodcurdling screams of the innocent Jedi he slaughtered. He felt as if his fragile mind would shatter as remembered the way Padmé stumbled away from him as if he were a blood-stained beast. He felt as if a lightsaber were viciously stabbing him as he realised how he had become all he had swore as a little boy on Tatooine to destroy- a cold-blooded killer. A merciless traitor. A horrendous husband. A-

“Ani?” A soft voice muttered cautiously. “Can you hear me, my love?” The voice continued shakily before Anakin shivered at the gentle, soothing touch of a warm hand on his tense shoulder.

Anakin whipped his eyes open at the touch. There knelt his brave, beautiful wife, her tanned dress stained with tears, a nervous smile on her face.

He almost laughed in adoration at the sight of many stray chocolate curls framing her face, until he remembered what a merciless monster he felt like.

“No, please get away from me! I don’t want to hurt you. I don’t deserve you.” Anakin muttered in distress as he attempted to stand up. He failed almost immediately, his long legs feeling numb and collapsing.

Anakin expected to fall to the grimy ground with a thud and the sight of Padmé waddling away from him. But instead, Padmé rushed to wrap an arm around his sweat-stained neck.

She got comfortable on the grey ground, legs crossed and a small smile etching itself on her face as she rubbed patterns on his neck with her thumb, attempting to help his panic attack subside.

He closed his eyes and felt his body calm at Padmé’s family touch. Absentmindedly, Anakin’s flesh hand reached for Padmé’s, and he intertwined their fingers as he did on those many restless nights when one of them awoke from a numbing nightmare.

“You are back.” She breathed in disbelief, as she struggled to hold back a wave of relieved tears.

Anakin chocked back a grateful sob. Despite all the blood he had on his hands. Despite the fact that he had contributed to the fall of the Republic that Padmé had fought so hard to preserve. Despite the fact he had roared at her, blinded by rage, jealousy and darkness. She still unconditionally loved him.

“You…y-you…don’t hate me? But…but…I killed so many. I abolished the Republic. I accused you of cheating on me. I did so many disgusting things. I-” Anakin’s rambling was cut off as Padmé pressed a finger to his lips.

“Ani. I am heartbroken. I am beyond devastated. I will need time to think this through.” Padmé begun, fresh tears flowing out of her chocolate-coloured eyes.

“We will need to have so many conversations about the atrocities you’ve committed. We will need time to work on our relationship.” She continued, a hand resting on her baby bump as she tried to calm herself.

“But… despite all the chaos and death you’ve caused, you came back. You pushed out of that blasted darkness. You want to right all the wrongs you’ve done. You came back to me. And even if you didn’t, I would never, ever stop believing that there is good in you. Yes I am disgusted by the things you did. But that wasn’t you. You were manipulated, poisoned. I forgive you. I love you, Anakin. Not that shell of a man you became.”

Anakin blinked slowly. He then blinked rapidly. He could not process the fact that Padmé forgave him. And still loved him with all her giving, generous heart. He could not process that there would still be the one person that he loved so deeply by his side in the challenging days to come.

“I don’t know what to say. Or do. I…I love you so much.” Anakin sobbed, glancing down in shame.

“I love you too, Ani.” Padmé smiled softly, reaching for Anakin’s gloved hand and placing it on her swollen stomach. They both giggled as they felt an aggressive thump against the soft fullness of Padmé’s stomach.

“Promise me that you will never go to the dark side again.” Padmé exclaimed hopefully a moment later, breaking the connection between their hands and laying a hand to Anakin’s chest.

“I promise.” Anakin vowed, intending to spend the rest of his life amending for his dark deeds.

“Good.” Padmé sighed contentedly, before her hand slid onto Anakin’s cheek.

Hesitantly, Anakin leaned closer to his witty, welcoming wife. He was debating whether or not he was safe enough to be around her.

As if reading his thoughts, Padmé rolled her eyes lovingly before gently pressing her lips against his.

Anakin’s savoured her sweet, fruity perfume scent and the familiar warmth that came every time they kissed one another.

He realised that this moment symbolised that, in a galaxy falling apart, there was still hope for a brighter future for his child and all civilisations.

He just had to trust the light side of the Force and focus on the deep love he could not contain for his wife and child.

EXCERPT:

Generals Kenobi and Skywalker were sitting at a table on the open tarmac, Rex and Cody beside their superiors quietly waiting for the physical test to start. Lara was going to test the candidates in hand to hand combat, using hand only, blades and quarter staff. She wanted to see how well they might work, using any object as a weapon to defend themselves. She stepped up to the first candidate, CT 5609, named Primer. Lara gave him a little ceremonial bow, waiting for him to return it, then took a ready pose.

The clone did the same, his watchful eyes on her. When he’d been introduced to the new General, he’d just about not been able to listen to the words coming from the Commander about why he was there. She was hypnotizing to look at. She’d noticed his distraction and gave him a bright smile, then looked to Cody significantly. Primer had been able to snap himself out of his daze then, hearing the reason for being called there that day. He was honored, but now he was terrified. He was expected to fight this woman? That was not his first inclination.

While he was daydreaming, Lara suddenly closed the distance between them, her left fist coming out of seemingly nowhere to punch him. He barely got his forearm up to block her in time, and dank ferrick! She packed a punch! He stepped back quickly, but that gave her room to spin and bring her boot around, nearly taking him in the side of the head. He dropped low, the kick passing over him, and quickly stepped into her radius, trying to keep her in tight quarters so she couldnt swing at him. But that was part of the goal here. He caught a stiff elbow in the solar plexus that made him see stars. He barely kept his feet, raising his right arm weakly to block another punch while throwing one of his own with his left fist. She stopped his fist cold with her palm, stepped back a bit, spun and took his feet right out from under him. Primer was looking at the sky from his back, wondering what just happened? That whole fight had lasted about 3 seconds.

His view was suddenly blocked by her smiling face as she stood over him. “Alright, soldier?” She reached her hand down to help haul him to his feet. Primer looked blindsided. He’d always thought he was pretty capable at hand to hand fighting. He was going to have to step up his game. She didn’t give him much time to think, suddenly dropping her head low and bringing her back foot up in a spin kick. Primer got both hands up and caught her foot this time, pushing back to throw it away from him. She somehow used the momentum of his push to spin in midair on her side like a corkscrew, landing on her feet, then spinning backwards to bring her fists around. Primer was acting purely on instinct at that point, trying to defend himself. He started to actively back away from her, working in a circle. She stopped her attacks, watching him circle like some kind of predator cat searching for the best opening.

Their fight lasted about 5 minutes longer; she didnt have all day to play with these guys, though clearly she enjoyed sparring. Primer had finally gone on the offensive, moving to attack the General rather than run from her the entire test. He’d landed a couple of good blows, he thought. When General Kenobi called time on the match, Lara had stood, smiled at Primer and bowed to him again. This time, he felt the respect he gave her was completely founded. She fought better than anyone he’d ever seen.

Summary: Fine. Skywalker would tag along during the ship ride, sure. As soon as they got to Stewjon they’d be going their separate ways. Anakin knew they were going to the planet, not to the mountains, so maybe Cody could just drop him off at some village and then get back on the ship and actually fly to the mountains. Yeah, that would work.

Cody tried not to think of how callous he seemed. He knew Skywalker was grieving Obi-Wan just as he was, but Cody just needed… he wasn’t sure what he needed. But he was certain that he didn’t need Skywalker. Skywalker had a wife to go back to, and a Padawan who was considering working with the Order again, and two ade about to enter the world. Cody had his vode, who all needed space to learn who they wanted to be. He used to have Obi-Wan too. Now Cody was alone, and he wanted it to stay that way while he figured out what the kriff he was going to do with the rest of his life. Obi-Wan was supposed to be there to help him, let Cody share his dreams. Cody was lost without him.

hooboy, this might be a long one.

anidala has always been one of my favorite ships but sometimes i am totally unable to reconcile fanon and certain tcw 2008 anidala because it’s just — they are all out of character. and the fact itself is annoying because anakin is either turned into a dumb and selfish person who likes murder while padmé becomes this careful workaholic which I can’t reconcile with the woman who really looked at the guy she just remet for two or three weeks and go, let’s get married. not that it’s a bad decision ;). but the point is both of them are reckless and hopeless romantics. my god i can totally imagine them writing love sonnets under anonymous names and sending it to each other and both of them know who it is because they know their handwritings.

and then, in fanon, anakin becomes this selfish guy who just murders for no reason and actually enjoys and it and padmé becomes this cold, careful person who prefers work over anakin when it’s so clearly shown that both of them love each other and would definitely abandon their duty if one of them were even in trouble. they. loved. each other. deeply. but nooo, it’s more fun to make anakin into a selfish jerk while padmé becomes a cold workaholic because anakin is darth vader and it isn’t acceptable for women to show any signs of ‘weakness’. nuance gets thrown out of the window.

also i have really enjoyed the matrilineal aspect of naboo culture sometimes so i just might be able to see anakin to take naberrie but the same time not ig. that still needs to be thought about. certain anakin’s traits can be linked to neurodivergency, his hatred for sand? sensory issues. usually problems with social stuff? neurodivergency. but people prefer to just call him whiny and attention seeking ig. padmé herself kinda displays certain neurodivergent tendencies like her hyper empathy to some extent.

I agree with what you’re saying in the first part. TCW did ruin Anidala’s dynamic and they over-inflated the parts of Anakin and Padme’s characters that were not their main personality features. Padme grew out of her workaholic self after Anakin came back into her life. Anakin actually hates killing and killing is shown to bring him pain. But TCW took the fact that he killed the Tusken after they tortured his mother to death and the fact that he accepted to do anything Palpatine wants just so Padme can live as “Anakin sure loves murder!“ And they ignored the context between those scenes entirely.

Now fans, they only portray Anakin as some disaster man-child. Everyone hates to be around Anakin and he knows it and he makes sure to tell everyone about how difficult he is to be around. Fanon Padme hates being with Anakin and she would rather be with Sabe and she makes sure Anakin knows what a chore he is and how much better she is than him. Fanon Padme is also a stereotypical gross guy from the 50′s who act like she owns Anakin’s body and she lives to show him and others how much control she has over him and how he is nothing more than a trophy for her.

I don’t know a lot about neurodivergency, but I think those specific traits you’ve listed for them are not necessarily linked to it and in some cases they don’t even fit them.

Like it’s pretty common to hate sand when you’re surrounded by it. People who live in areas where it snows a lot also dislike snow. There is a TPM comic where Padme and Jar Jar both say that they hate sand now after being on Tatooine only for a short period of time. Also, sand is really irritating because it’s one of those materials that you don’t want to breathe in or have it around you because it can cause health damage and even kill you. It’s not necessarily neurodivergent to hate sand when you live on a planet covered in sand, where there’s only sand for miles all around you and where sandstorms are common. Anakin complaining about sand after Padme was talking about sand is just him making conversation. People just like to ignore that they were actually talking about sand before and act like Anakin just started talking about sand out of the blue.

I also don’t think that his social awkwardness meant he is neurodivergent. Again, I don’t know much about it, but he was only socially awkward to Padme because he was in love with her and had no idea how to go about it. In TPM he’s very comfortable talking to people and he’s pretty social too. And he makes friends really fast too. Like he considers Padme, Qui-Gon, and Jar Jar his friends right off the bat. So he’s good at being social, but he’s bad at flirting and talking to his crush. Like he has no problems with communicating with Qui-Gon or Obi-Wan (even when he’s older).

Anakin is very emotional and it’s rare to see a male character act that way and be open with his emotions like Anakin is. Men are expected to bottle up their feelings and always be tough and unfeeling (kinda like how fans now expect women to act lol). But Anakin didn’t fit into that stereotype, so people called him whiny and attention seeking, but he was just being a teenager.

Same for Padme, I don’t think that the fact that she cared about her people and wanted to be a good ruler/representative and she was willing to accept Anakin and love him despite his flaws was hyper empathy. I did read a little bit on this just now and I don’t think it applies to Padme at all. One big difference between Padme and Anakin is that while he lets his emotions out, she doesn’t. At least not with other people present.

Telperion Laurelin was created at the dawn of time by The Great Father, Illúvatar. Her purpose was to be twofold: to help maintain the Balance between the Light and the Dark, and to guide the souls of the Honored Dead to the Undying Lands of Valinor. She was bred in answer to the threat imposed by the Great Deceiver, Morgoth, a child of Illúvatar that had destroyed the Two Trees of Valinor in jealousy over their beautiful light, and in greed - he wanted to rule over all the Children of Illúvatar, over all the worlds, no matter how many that might come to be. He had also stolen the Silmarils, stones that had been created to capture and imitate the light of the Two Trees - hallowed stones to the Elves that had made them. Lara had been born of one of the Ainur, the first creations of Illúvatar with godlike immortality, but not raised by them. At her birth, she’d been taken and placed in stasis, in a pool of crystal clear water, where her body and mind grew, all things were taught to her, and she waited for the day to come when she would be sent forth to complete the duties she was charged with. By the time she was actually called out of her sleep, Morgoth had been long imprisoned, the Silmarils recovered and set aside for her, and Morgoth’s Lieutenant, Sauron, had come to power. She had been awakened, presented with her two swords, her armor and sigils, and the Silmarils as her crown. She set out to help the people of ancient Earth, fighting alongside them to destroy Sauron and return peace to the world.

At the end of her first war, she was given in marriage to a king, as a peace cow, to solidify ties between the ancient world of Valinor and the new rising world. She gave the man children, one of which was a daughter of singular beauty, the image of her mother. But her relationship with the king was more of respect and friendship rather than love. Her king died after the years went by, her children were lost to her or grew old and died as well, and when the third generation had come to power, Lara decided it was time for her to leave. She had become more of a curiosity than a help, and her duties to the Balance had never changed. She would do more good, passing into the world anonymously, rather than trying to remain relevant with people who no longer knew her. Her descendants spread out though the world, and even into other galaxies over time, carrying her bloodline through time and space. There were times when she came into contact with a child of her blood; she knew them by the vibrations, almost a singing, in recognition of her own. Her life became one of solitude, a shadow that passed through the eons of time alone, appearing to help when needed, and disappearing again into the darkness of legend. In all of her years since her family had dissolved, she had never gotten close to anyone long enough to form a relationship. None outlived her - why would she want to love again, only to lose them in what was a relatively brief spark in her life? She was not opposed to love. She felt it was the most important driving force in nature, but she had yet to find the one whom Destiny had set aside for her. Lara answered calls from other worlds, other galaxies, working to fulfill her charge, passing as a lonely shadow through time.

She had ferried countless souls to the Undying Lands over time. The Vikings had been the most entertaining for her. The general impression of them was always one of big, hearty men that believed in honored death in battle, passing into their Halls of Valhalla where they feasted and fought and fucked their way through eternity. They were always a happy lot, even in death, many of them telling jokes as she led them to their final homes. Thankfully she’d had no personal connection to any of the souls she escorted, since the long past and the death of her children and grandchildren.

Lara had been in a nearby galaxy when she heard the calls for help in the Jedi’s own system. Thousands of voices crying out for relief from a war that was affecting system after system. Chiefest among them was a voice repeated over and over - to Lara it had sounded like the same voice. Since she’d arrived, she’d learned it was, and it wasn’t. It had been the voice of the clones, thousands of them dying daily in a war they were created to fight. She didn’t voice a judgment on that fact, but her story ended on that note. The Jedi all seemingly awoke from her story, as she drew back from their minds. There were now no further questions about her provenance. Master Yoda especially seemed satisfied by what he’d seen. The Chancellor and Senator Amidala seemed both impressed and saddened by her story. All those years, alone, a witness to the eternal ravages of time. Amidala had glanced over at General Skywalker, to see his reaction to the story. He looked awestruck.

Lara took a breath, and looking to Masters Yoda and Windu said “Well, then. That is the story. Do I pass your guidelines? Am I worthy to serve alongside the Jedi in this war?”

Master Yoda did not answer immediately, and he glanced over at the other Council members first. Then he spoke. “Answer our questions, this does. The Guardian of the Balance, as written in the ancient Jedi texts, you are. Believe you, I do. Though, General Lin, question your purpose here, I do. Come to save the clones, have you, or the people of the Republic?”

The other council members all looked up in surprise, and Anakin’s jaw dropped in shock. None of them had gotten that impression from her story, but it was a fair question. Anakin could see it took even Lara by surprise, and she paused to think before answering.

“My charge is to help all people. The clones are a part of those people are they not?” Lara looked at Yoda respectfully. “I cannot deny their voices were the loudest, the clearest of those I heard. If for no other reason, the clones are why I am here. But having come so far, I am also here to fight for the Balance. Not just one race of being.”
