okay im doing a little medical research for my house fic, and what ive learned is actually very interesting

in the show, they chalk house's hallucinations up to his vicodin abuse. in reality, opioid induced hallucinations are uncommon and most reportedly caused by morphine. the most often reports about vicodin was switching out the opioid that was causing the issue to oxycodone, which actually stopped those hallucinations.

interestingly, ptsd can have instances of hallucinations. there is a suggested link between severity of dissociation and having flashbacks vs hallucinations.

In the chart in this paper, house's hallucinations fit far better into the PTSD category than the schizophrenic one.

thematically, house going off vicodin was meaningful and helpful for a number of reasons. medically though, his hallucinations would be far more likely explained by his PTSD than his substance abuse. (at least from my non expert research.

This is an educational comic about Housing Discrimination in San Francisco that I did for my History of Ethnic Groups in California class at my college, featuring (fully human) versions of my characters! Because I tie everything back to them somehow. Yeah.

Anyway I'm sorry if the text is hard to read, I didn't feel like adding it digitally and this already took me a long ass time to do, plus it's late by like 4 days, so yeah I did what I could. I don't know if I'm gonna pass this project because coming up with a good script that didn't take me forever was hard, but hey at least I was creative and tried my best even if I kept missing class and staying up until 4-6am multiple nights lol

So about the comic, basically Tobias got defensive about something and the others end up mentioning their own experiences plus bringing up some historical events. I've done this kind of monochromatic colored comic for a class last year too, but I didn't get around to posting it because there was too much dialogue to add for it to be readable on here, so I'll probably remake that at some point.

John Lennon Paper Doll (part 1)

One of the larger projects @the-paper-apricot worked on for the zine was a paper doll of John. We planned to include photos of the finished doll, and a printable pattern so you could make your own! (We’ll upload the printable version soon). We chatted a lot about the artistic merit of the project, and we planned to include a short essay on the ideas we discussed.

That essay was never written, but here are the main points we wanted to include:

Cutting out and dressing paper dolls is traditionally seen as an activity for girls. As such they are treated as frivolous and lacking substance. There is an interesting interplay between this and the idea that the Beatles were discovered by, and beloved of, young girls before they were ever taken seriously by adult men (this is hyperbole, but you know what we mean)

An early title for the White Album was A Doll’s House (mentioned by Ian MacDonald in Revolution in the Head), inspired by the Ibsen play of the same name. In the play Nora tells her husband: “And you have always been so kind to me. But our home has been nothing but a playroom. I have been your doll-wife, just as at home I was papa’s doll-child; and here the children have been my dolls.” Perhaps the Beatles felt that they had been someone’s playthings.

Andy Warhol played with paper dolls, a fact which we thought added something to the discussion about gender. From an interview with Glenn O’Brien in 1977: GLENN O’BRIEN: What was your first work of art? ANDY WARHOL: I used to cut out paper dolls.

John was interested in his own relationship with gender. "I look at early pictures of meself, and I was torn between being Marlon Brando and being the sensitive poet - the Oscar Wilde part of me with the velvet, feminine side. I was always torn between the two, mainly opting for the macho side, because if you showed the other side, you were dead." Tony Bramwell referred to Brian Epstein's home as "that little doll’s house" in his book, although that view wasn't necessarily shared by any of the Beatles.

We were going to make a comparison with the sleeve artwork for Sgt. Pepper, and especially with the insert sheet of cardboard cut-outs that came with it. The idea that the stand-up cut-outs of the band should help the fans take part in the project of Sgt. Pepper as an art ‘event’ seemed especially pertinent.

@the-paper-apricot began work on this doll last spring, shortly after beginning her paper doll pop project.

Natasha: “I thought you were taking a shower?”

In September 2022, I started writing a new comic about Dundee. I ended up producing an entire script and the majority of thumbnails for a 200 page comic. Unfortunately, I'll probably never make it. 200 pages is a lot; I have a job and other projects I'm working on. I made a fair amount of concept art for it though, so I thought I might share some of it.

The story takes place when Irwin was young, shortly before Darren walked out of his life. It is both a prequel and sequel to Jackaroo Dundee and was going to be called Paper House. I'm going to leave the rest of the story a mystery in the hopes that I'll eventually do something with this script.

^This is Darren! Everything was written and drawn before we knew what Darren looked like, and I'd always imagined Irwin was the spitting image of his dad. It was thematically important to the story for them to look alike, so I'd planned to keep it like this even after we met Darren.

The dialogue is blurred in the first two panels because Irwin is deaf in his left ear and couldn't hear Darren until he was behind him. At the start of the story, Irwin uses a hearing aid, but it's later broken.

Windows and door frames are significant! There's nothing behind them. Ever.

I designed an outfit for each character for every scene they were in, paying close attention to fashion trends of the era and items of clothing that they might wear frequently with different outfits.

Sheila's clothes in particular were fun to design. She starts getting more adventurous with her style after Darren walks out.

I realised very quickly that the tone of the story demanded a more realistic style, so it was fun to adapt my pre-existing design for Irwin to this.

The core idea behind Paper House was a young Irwin who hates his dad, but feels powerless to stop himself from becoming just like him. I put a lot of work into this comic and would love for it to see the light of day at some point, even if it ends up in a different form.

I did get some paper folded and cut down.... not a Ton but some... I did 8 signatures if 3 pages each, of the 12 needed for one book.

And... I poked around working on narrowing down plants options for the front yard again... which is not what I meant to do...

Mario? You mean one of the biggest gaming icons along with Sonic?

Yeah, he'll be there along with other well-known characters and more obscure characters in the franchise as well.
