**URGENT** HELP SAVE THE USGS BEE LAB!
PLEASE circulate this as widely as possible, as soon as possible.
Hi all, you may not know me but I am a native bee researcher in the eastern US. People like me work to study and protect the 3600 species of native bees in North America, many of which are in severe decline.
We just received devastating news, that unfortunately was not surprising. The Trump administration's proposed 2026 budget is set to defund most of the ecological research happening at the USGS, and that includes zeroing out the budget for the USGS Native Bee Inventory & Monitoring Lab.
Don't know them? Maybe you've seen stunning photos like this:

These gorgeous and evocative focus-stacked photos of native bees on black backgrounds - all of which are public domain - come from the USGS Bee Lab (here's their Flickr). Through these, they've helped bring the beauty and importance of native bees to the public's attention. Hundreds if not thousands of news articles, videos, and publications use these photos.
But that is just one tiny slice of what the USGS Bee Lab does for pollinator conservation. Its primary role is much bigger; they provide technical support, research collaborations, and financial & grant partnerships to federal and state agencies, academic institutions and researchers, and much more, so we can study, manage, and protect North America's wild pollinators. They conduct research of their own that has led to species rediscoveries, and produce invaluable resources that have greatly advanced our understanding of wild bees and our approaches to studying and conserving them. They also provide the essential and irreplaceable service of bee identification. For those who don't know, identifying bees is hard. Sometimes Really Hard. And this lab is one of just a handful of places in the entire country who can identify some of the toughest groups of bees, and who sit on the forefront of breakthroughs on taxonomy and identification that the rest of us in this field rely on. Without this service, agencies and researchers trying to survey and monitor bees in order to track population declines, manage land, and get policy changed are stuck with a lot of nameless bees, severely limiting the usefulness of that data.
Tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of bee specimens pass through this lab annually, plus the thousands in permanent storage, from long-term monitoring efforts by state and federal agencies, and researchers like myself. They operate at a greater capacity than basically any other institution doing this kind of work. Few if any bee researchers in the eastern US, or even the country, have not benefitted from this lab's work, and those benefits are passed on to you through being able to protect pollinators and the services they provide both in agriculture and ecosystems.
This lab is headed up by scientist Sam Droege, who has dedicated decades of his life to this cause, and whom I consider not just a research partner but, humbly, a friend. I am utterly indebted to him for helping me get my start in this field, and for the support and kindness he has shown me and every other young professional who is passionate about pollinators. The Lab operates with an insanely small budget already, and a very limited staff, yet the impact they have is exponentially outsized. Losing the USGS Bee Lab would be a devastating blow to pollinator conservation in this country, at a time when native bee species are sitting on the precipice, and sustainable agriculture is non-negotiable for our future.
You can read more about the Bee Lab here. The Lab is not well-publicized, but it's a lifeline for the many dedicated people who work to try and protect pollinators and the environment at large.
SO WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Sam Droege has sent out a request for help, and has encouraged us to post on social media. This is what he wants you to do to help us save the Bee Lab.
This is verbatim:
What is Happening: · The USGS Bee Lab is at risk of being permanently closed due to cuts in the 2026 Federal Budget and looming federal RIF’s · Specifically, the Ecosystem Mission Area (EMA) budget, which funds the USGS Bee Lab and the Eastern Ecological Science center has been zeroed out · Thousands of layoffs to hit Interior, National Parks imminently - Government Executive What you can do · Write to your representatives, the White House, and the Department of the Interior that they should restore the funding for the USGS Bee Lab · Send digital or physical letters, write emails, post to social media What you should be highlighting: · Personal anecdotes about how the Bee Lab has impacted you or your organization · How important the research the Bee Lab is conducting is to your state Contact Information: 1. Representatives: Find Your Representative | house.gov 2. Senators: U.S. Senate: Contacting U.S. Senators 3. White House: Contact Us – The White House 4. Interior: [email protected] Send a copy of the letter to [email protected] Pass this email around. Post your response to social media
IT'S OK if you are not a scientist and have not directly interacted with the Bee Lab. Have you seen the lab's photos? Are you concerned about native pollinator declines? Are you aware of any pollinator conservation initiatives or policies in your own state - those almost certainly have drawn, directly or indirectly, from work the Lab has done. Speak about American food production and agriculture, how the Lab's research and collaborations are essential to safeguarding pollination services (this might help reach across the aisle).
Sam urges that these letters, emails, phone calls, etc, must happen quickly - within the next couple days. This information went out on May 8th and that is the day I am posting this. So please, don't wait.
If 'save the bees' has ever meant anything to you, this is the agency that is playing one of the biggest roles in this country in making that happen. Please, contact your representatives, and pass this call to action along however you can. Thank you.
#bees#native bees#pollinators#native pollinators#save the bees#usgs bee lab#usgs native bee inventory and monitoring lab#yes sam put his email out there so i'm going to post it as is#i just visited the lab in person a couple weeks ago and they're scrambling to get bee specimens in storage and out the door#i had that sinking feeling that i had to get my bees identified as soon as possible or i might not get the chance and here we are#i told him I'd help him in whatever way I can and so for his sake and mine please help us.#if you're a science blog and follow me PLEASE spread this around#time is of the essence. post on other platforms.#want something specific to mention? they rediscovered the chestnut mining bee. there's a smithsonian article that just came out#all about that. so you know. that was KIND OF A BIG DEAL#they also literally developed THE standardized protocol for bee monitoring. used by federal agencies and researchers alike.#THEY ARE THE BEE PEOPLE. its really weird that i keep bringing steven universe up like at this rate i'm gonna make people believe i used to be a steven universe superfan but i swear i'm not i actually mostly only knew of it through osmosis its just. steven universe and dragon age exist on eerily similar planes both on a writer's and consumer's scale so it just tends to come up a lot when i think about the state of fandom and death of the author and whatever you get it .
anyways remember when the fanbase for steven universe (primarily on tumblr) became inundated with discourse and was littered with teenagers overreacting to character flaws and using them to apply malicious intent to the creators and branding it as a form of sociopolitical propaganda against themselves. and then the showrunners seeing this very small pocket of fans demanding complete ideological purity from a cartoon actually for some very odd reason took their demands seriously and tried to rewrite the show's core narrative and characters to fit this impossible standard until the later seasons became so messy and narratively incoherent that it became obvious even to that same small pocket of fans that they were being pandered to
so anyways dragon age veilguard right
#this isnt me blaming fandom either like i said its always a small minority and its mostly Teenagers#people who havent actually fully developed their media literacy skills and are also exist on a platform dedicated to social justice and w/e#so its not a big deal to me that fandom On Tumblr Specifically has a tendency to miss the point#its a problem to me when creators for some reason obsess over having a perfect reputation with these people#and start letting their opinions inform the direction of their stories#if you're a writer of a major ip that tends to tackle difficult subjects dont engage with fandom thats it. that's literally it.#datv critical#mine

So, the Marvelous CEO stepped down.
Let's talk about that!

❕This post contains speculative discussion covering: Marvelous Entertainment, Rune Factory, Story of Seasons, and touches on other IPs in the Marvelous folio. Also some fiscal discussion! It might be boring 😅...❕
Following the money
For those unaware, Marvelous isn't doing so well fiscally. In response to a (consistently) poor earnings report from 2024, the current Marvelous CEO Sato Suminobu announced his retirement from the position to elevate Shinichi Terui (an executive director) in his place.
The reasoning for the poor fiscal reporting was cited as "too few core IP releases and low sales".
What does that mean for the future? Well, while this decision focuses on 2024's performance, let's first take a bit to recap the first-time releases from 2019 to now:
January 18, 2019: Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes
June 3, 2019: Dead or School
June 9, 2019: Senran Kagura: Peach Ball
July 18, 2019: WACCA
September 13, 2019: Daemon x Machina
October 17, 2019: Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town
February 6, 2020: Granblue Fantasy: Versus
February 25, 2020: Rune Factory 4 Special
August 25, 2020: Kandagawa Jet Girls
November 5, 2020: Shadowverse: Champion's Battle
November 10, 2020: Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin
February 25, 2021: Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town
May 20, 2021: Rune Factory 5
(Almost a year later!) May 19, 2022: Deadcraft
October 17, 2022: Potionomics
November 2, 2022: Doraemon Story of Seasons: Friends of the Great Kingdom
January 26, 2023: Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life
March 2, 2023: Rune Factory 3 Special
June 1, 2023: Loop8: Summer of Gods
October 3, 2023: Silent Hope
November 3, 2023: Fashion Dreamer
November 9, 2023: Cuisineer
(Almost a year later, again!) November 1, 2024: Farmagia
Dry Spells
From 2019 to 2024, 23 titles (please correct me if I missed any!) were delivered. 2022 and 2024 were undoubtedly fiscally dry periods, with one-year periods between releases.
Of the released titles in this period, 10 were from more notorious series; and 6 of those were from the company's self-described Flagship IPs (3 from Story of Seasons and Rune Factory respectively)!
Despite Rune Factory and Story of Seasons being flagship IPs, over half of the games (4/6) released 2019-2024 were remakes or remasters of previous titles (Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town, Rune Factory 4 Special, Rune Factory 3 Special, and Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life), leaving only 2 titles as standalone, new mainline entries in their respective series. Oh, and there was Doraemon too, I guess.
Even with the massive sales seen - with Pioneers of Olive Town being the fastest selling XSEED published title ever and Rune Factory 5 topping 500,000 units sold worldwide after an unprecedented comeback - the games still massively under-performed at launch. The backlash was so strong for Olive Town that the producer (Dai Takemura) was run off his social media platforms and formally apologized for the poor launch. Rune Factory 5 also suffered during the Japanese launch, garnering criticisms from Japanese and North American fans alike amid celebrations of the series' return. This left fans in each space wondering what their favorite series would look like after such rocky starts on the new Nintendo Switch hardware.
The Future, Sprouting
Despite the struggles and setbacks, and nothing to really "make it rain", the flagship series are continuing to grow with 2 new additions to Story of Seasons - a cross-play online multiplayer title, and the next mainline game (purportedly the 30th anniversary entry) - and 2 new Rune Factory games - with entry 6 in development, and Guardians of Azuma releasing in May 2025.
These games are really going to have to do something outstanding to make up for the broken trust of their fans. But with a company struggling with its financials, there's always going to be a tug of war between satisfying fans and generating revenue.

This is where speculative analysis on my part comes in.
Flexible and Mobile
Current market trends point towards more open-world, cel-shaded style games for mobile (ala Hoyoverse games, Wuthering Waves notably). And the Nintendo Switch is, after all, a glorified touchscreen tablet. It's not lost on fans that there's something going on in the background regarding the games' development, and how eerily alike they are in visuals into some of the bigger, heavy hitting and grossing mobile titles out there.
The style on its own is simplistic, colorful, and warm. It's also very fast to develop and refine - no overly complicated textures or super granular details. The art direction also makes it lighter than other games which have many materials or polygons. It just works.
However, that can point to speculation around development; whether the studio is trying to streamline into shorter times...or is headed in a mobile direction. Let's take a look at some recently released screenshots from Guardians of Azuma.
There are elements of UI design displayed here that would feel right at home on a device held in one's hands, and not just with controllers in palms! Make no mistake, mobile is not an insult here. In fact, mobile may be just the direction these series need in order to sustain themselves in the current market era. Mobile gaming currently accounts for (roughly) 110 billion USD annually, across the globe! Even indies like Stardew Valley can see sizeable mobile market gains from concurrent releases on app stores.
It also wouldn't be the first time either series appeared on mobile. A company with as long a history and staying power as Marvelous would surely see no small number of players and a steady revenue for Story of Seasons and Rune Factory by tapping back into that market. Perhaps we're due to see things sprout on that platform soon?
(What happened to that in-development Story of Seasons Mobile title, anyway...?)
#story of seasons#bokujou monogatari#harvest moon#I forgot about piczle cross but you know what - I think that in itself says something#i feel a strong need to clarify that i think the series would shoot themselves in the foot by releasing a Solely mobile title#not withstanding the Tencent mobile title that (might still be? we have no updates) is in development#but i think a multi platform release that includes mobile would not be Remiss#rune factory

shameless self promotion sunday
tagged by @foxboyclit and @thegreatobsesso, thank you both!
i love all my fics but also i do in fact do other things sometimes, and i’m really quite proud of my little neocities site. it’s not perfect, and it’s very much a work in progress, but the parts that are done I really like!
i have all my fic up on there, and a load of my playlists (with meta commentary on some!), plus I made sections for Obedience and obsession that have some very neat looking character pages...i love tinkering with html and css, and i love having a project that is purely for fun and not remotely about demonstrating any kind of skill.
i've really enjoyed solving such puzzles as 'how to make a horizontal menu bar' and 'how to make a reactive image grid'
anyway i just like my lil hand-coded stick-figure of a website, and if anyone else has a neocities let me know, i wanna put you in my list of friend links~
no-pressure tagging @oh-no-another-idea @chauceryfairytales @reneesbooks and @talesfromaurea to do some shameless self promotion (on a sunday or any other day, all days are good for singing your own praises)
#writeblr#tag games#neocities#id in alt#id in alt text#self promotion sunday#shameless self promo#it is not the most accessible or cross platform site but i did make it myself and i am Not a wbe developer#by any stretch#i just like doing it! it's fun!#plus it's my backup place for fics#and a place if people don't want to use ao3 or dreamwidth#i also really like that i have a place for my playlists now#cause i love making covers and writing track commentary#listen to my yap about my music choices for my blorbos!!!

Hard to know how worried to be (or even whether to be worried) about Tumblr in the wake of Automattic's mass firings today, but I guess this is a good time to mention that I have a BlueSky even though I haven't done anything with it yet.
If you have a bsky pls follow me! And maybe I will figure out how to be active there. Lowkey idk how to be the same person I am on Tumblr anywhere else but I guess I should start trying in the spirit of diversification.
(Do people still use pillowfort? Or where else do cool Tumblr people share BG3 screenshots and fanfic and such?)
#bjk talks#honestly pretty bummed to hear about it all - i worked there for two years#and some of my old coworkers were caught in the mass layoffs#shitty situation#low key i think it's probably less likely tumblr will shut down and more likely that they're putting it into a maintenance mode situation#rather than committing active development#which is not the worst thing in the world since this platform hates change anyway XD#but who knows#also if we're moots feel free to ask for my discord :)

2024 reads / storygraph
Outdrawn
f/f contemporary romance
two cartoonist who’ve been rivals since uni, and now have competing webcomics online, have to work together on the relaunch of a cult classic at the comic press they both work at
they both struggle with art-related physical and mental health issues, and complicated families
#outdrawn#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#sapphic books#I thought this was decent! I liked the concept (even if I got distracted by some art related things…)#and the dynamic between the characters was good. I enjoyed their relationship development broadly speaking#and the emphasis on communication; though it was a quick flip into being together all of a sudden.#The sketchbook doodle flirting was cute. Some interesting exploration of their complicated family situations too.#There’s a lot of exploration of burnout and carpal tunnel and the dangers of artists overworking which I think are important conversations#and are done with some nuance. But it’s pretty much all discussed in the context of the personal pressure they put on themselves#rather than the industry corporate greed and artificial competition created by the comic platform - which are significant in this story!#It felt odd that that connection wasn’t really ever made?#I know that this is a romance and nitpicking the background plot is beside the point and also that I am not a big romance reader#but the premise that the comic hosting site archives everything; wipes the leaderboard; and out of nowhere has a comic competition for#new weekly chapters…I’m sorry but the art world would riot. Even if people enter because they’re desperate for the cash they’d be pissed#People live off the income from their webcomics! if they were erased (temporarily) with no notice…..there would be crimes committed istg#I simply don’t believe that it would be doable to create a new weekly webcomic with no notice while you also have a full-time comic job#(especially as the only stylistic choices mentioned are full-colour) - not to mention what happened to their 8-years-running webcomics#that were archived? they don’t think about them at all after the beginning? surely they’d care about that?#And then with their new comics they make for this competition (after work I guess) we get vague snippets about them but barely anything#- if they’re consuming that much of your time I would expect to feel like they’re thinking about them all the time#rather than the vaguest discussion about genre and cast numbers only.#I guess I just think the whole comic site stunt felt unnecessary for the plot anyway -#it would have worked exactly the same if they were just competing on the normal leaderboard with their normal comics???#anyway - I’m not judging TOO hard about all that because again I know it’s not the point and maybe the industry is like that in some place#Unfortunately it was distracting enough to affect my feelings on the book tho lol.#Lastly: the audiobook………oof. The narrators talk at different speeds; for one.#And Sage’s VA does this deeply weird raspy-anime-teen-boy voice for Noah which is such an odd choice#and doesn’t match her character at all.#unforch my library only had the audiobook (what I usually prefer) so I just had to sort of….translate the narration into a normal voice lol#anyway the romance is good tho

Low quality books that appear to be AI generated are making their way into public libraries via their digital catalogs, forcing librarians who are already understaffed to either sort through a functionally infinite number of books to determine what is written by humans and what is generated by AI, or to spend taxpayer dollars to provide patrons with information they don’t realize is AI-generated.
With Hoopla, librarians have to opt into Hoopla’s entire catalog, then pay for whatever their customers choose to borrow from that catalog. The only way librarians can limit what Hoopla books their customers can borrow is by setting a limit on the price of books. For example, a library can use Hoopla but make it so their customers can only borrow books that cost the library $5 per use.
“Investigating these authors, their book covers, their social media, etc takes A LOT OF TIME, especially with the volume of questionable material increasing month to month (and that's not including the sheer amount of legitimate books published each month in adult fiction that I'm looking at),” one librarian who asked to remain anonymous so she could talk openly about her job, told me. “Is it the best use of my time doing this work on top of my other duties when customers may or may not care? And with the rising multitudes of AI generated content, will there come a point where it just ‘is what it is?’”
This type of low quality, AI generated content, is what we at 404 Media and others have come to call AI slop. Librarians, whose job it is in part to curate what books their community can access, have been dealing with similar problems in the publishing industry for years, and have a different name for it: vendor slurry. While the term now encompasses what seems like AI-generated content as well, it predates the rise of generative AI, and also refers to the glut of low quality, often self-published ebooks or book “summaries” that are common on Hoopla. As some librarians told me, the sheer quantity of books in Hoopla’s service makes it seem more valuable because it offers such a large number of books, but in reality that number is misleadingly inflated by this slurry.
Several of the librarians I talked to said that they are worried about discussing [the problems raised by Hoopla's weak, unclear selection policies, including the 2022 inclusion of explicitly white nationalist texts,] because of the growing hostility towards libraries and groups like Moms for Liberty demanding that books about LGBTQ rights, race, and ethnicity be removed from libraries. One the one hand, librarians want to curate their collections and make sure their patrons are getting access to quality information. On the other hand, they don’t want people to think that they are trying to censor what materials patrons can access in way that’s comparable to what organizations like Moms for Liberty want. None of the librarians I talked to suggested the AI-generated content needed to be banned from Hoopla and libraries only because it is AI-generated. It might have its place, but it needs to be clearly labeled, and more importantly, provide borrowers with quality information.
#404media yaaaaay#public libraries#part of the reason this happens is that libraries have a very hard time applying meaningful vendor pressure#if you look at the ALA's 2023 digital public library ecosystem report it's really clear that there are very few vendors in this space#libby has a massive monopoly (>90% of libraries with ebooks use libby) but hoopla is also extremely popular in part because it's owned#by midwest tape which has been the primary library supplier of A/V materials for decades. libraries are niche small & underfunded-#& patrons want ebooks! ebook usage skyrocketed in 2020 & hasn't really gone back down. so hoopla is a convenient solution#it's EXPENSIVE for a lot of libraries - if you want to know why there's a monthly borrowing limit or a daily borrowing cap that's why#but it's very convenient & many libraries don't have staff that work on just digital collections; it's just a new responsibility#real time crunch / poor options problem. anyway idk what options look like internationally & i would be interested to find out#but this is why i stan cloudlibrary; they are A Competitor. the real solution ofc is to have a genuinely publicly owned & run platform#but that won't happen almost anywhere. NYPL does have an opensource app for some of their collections tho which is cool#also this article is being nice. the AI slop problem is plausibly also on the shelf! that shouldn't happen if you have enough time#to do good collection development but some libraries don't have the right staff. especially likely in spanish language collections#that are being purchased by people who don't speak spanish. in my experience. it's a mess

this is perpetual but I'm thinking about it now because I saw an annoying post but if there's ever anything accessibility-wise that you need me to be doing in my games that I've missed or aren't executing well enough, please let me know. I'm even interested in special mechanics just to bring you in on a thing—for example, the Hybrid radio having a closed caption on the radio page, versus the fact that right now there's no alternative to the MH visuals.
I'm totally open to doing new things and troubleshooting some stuff if it makes the process of playing these games more accessible for you, or even just more comfortable or more fun. Coding can accomplish a lot so always feel free to bluesky me.
#talkForge#bluesky like the phase of conceptual development not uh. not the platform.#I'm not going to twitter 2 I didnt even like twitter 1#BUT I will say on the topic of downloadable saves I just don't think that's gunna work#because of how harlowe works and how broswer security works#sugarcube has a built-in means of using that information but harlowe doesn't

one of the best parts in playing through remedy’s games is directly seeing how each game built upon concepts touched upon in prior ones. you can trace almost every experimental decision throughout its run of games that it makes for an interesting playthrough whether or not you enjoy playing the game
#watched an interview a while back where i believe it was Sam lake who said that often concepts that are discarded from the game they’re#making usually have a chance of reappearing in the next game#and that is. incredibly apparent with these games#or just continuing to try bold creative things#it doesn’t always work for me + part of that could also be from issues with time and production#(blood platforms in Payne. possessed objects in AW. the television eps in QB. the map and final boss fights of ctrl. etc. etc.)#but the care and love put into it by the writers developers actors musicians etc.#makes me fond of them for different reasons even though I definitely have favorites lol#it’s also why I understand the games don’t work for everyone. it’s reeeeally a matter of preference and I don’t even know whether I’ll like#their future releases. but hey if they keep trying new things then good for all the people involved#on a serious note where the hell do you go from making an ingame musical sequence?
