I’ve been on a bit of a Portal kick lately, and playing through Portal 2 again, there’s one particular aspect of the story I can’t stop thinking about, and that I haven’t seen anyone talk about.
Wheatley.
He was literally built to be moronic, and conjure ideas that should not work at all.
But when you consider Wheatley’s actions throughout the plot… he’s actually pretty smart if you think about it.
Like, yeah, he’s bumbling and sometimes can’t figure out seemingly basic concepts, but in other respects, Wheatley is frighteningly capable, even before he betrays the player.
He’s the one who comes up with the plan to shut down the turret production line and the neurotoxin generator. While obviously Chell does most of the legwork to achieve that, GLaDOS was caught completely off-guard and defenseless. To say nothing of how he managed to navigate the facility far enough to interrupt you in the middle of a test to help you escape.
And that’s to say nothing of how after he betrays you, and expresses his intent to kill you, he tricks you into thinking that he’s going to do it later down the line, before suddenly springing a trap on you that even GLaDOS compliments.
And then the boss fight. Wheatley not only thought to re-watch the old recordings of when Chell defeated GLaDOS, but even used that to prepare himself to avoid meeting the same fate. And even after you beat him, he booby-traps the stalemate button, and if completely crazy idea of portaling all the way to the moon hadn’t worked, Wheatley would have won ( albeit, he would have destroyed the facility too, but still ).
Like, on the last two points, I sort of initially thought Wheatley being smarter was due to the influence of GLaDOS’s body. But when I think about it, he totally displays a penchant for schemes and even outsmarting GLaDOS even before then - and I can’t help but wonder what that means for the little robot who was literally built to be as stupid as possible. GLaDOS literally describes him as an “idiot made to come up with stupid unworkable plans”, but… most of his plans throughout the game actually DO work, give or take.

ANOTHER UNDEAD FENTON
Inspiration came from this post by @stars-obsession-pit !
Word count: 1479
Masterpost of Archive Down Fics here.
(I wrote three dp x dc fics based off of prompts I've seen in the last day for reading while the site is getting maintenance. )
There was a high, shrill scream in the Fenton lab.
Maddie bolted for the stairs, abandoning her coffee without a thought. She flung herself down to see Jack bent over a body in front of the portal.
“Is this person a threat?” Maddie prepared to defend her husband, but the body didn't move.
Jack looked up at her. “No, I was just surprised! I think he's hurt, Mads.”
Her bleeding heart husband. She crossed the room and rolled their intruder over to see it was a kid, maybe Danny's age. In his sleep, he had a sweet, soft face. His face and throat were covered in faint scars.
Well. That was one of hers, now. No getting around it. That was a teenage boy on her floor who has obviously been the victim of violence.
“Well, shit,” Maddie said companionably. She blew out air between her teeth. “Dear, would you put clean sheets on in Jazz's room?”
They were running out of space, between the clones and the past evil alternate future children.
Jack saluted her, shouted an affirmation , and bounded away.
Maddie took a moment to wonder if her children would be an infinitely expanding collection and if so, if it would be better to move into Vlad's castle than to build the home addition they had planned for.
She gathered the teenager up in her arms despite him being her size, and laid him out on an exam table. She started checking his vitals.
A hand shot out and grabbed her by the wrist.
“Good morning, sweetheart,” Maddie said. She redirected her hand to smooth hair behind his ear. He blearily followed the movement, just as obviously intelligent as he was obviously compromised. She didn't know if it was a concussion or drugs or what, but this boy was not well. “It's Friday June 29th, and you're in Amity Park, Illinois. I'm Madeleine Fenton and you're at my house because you fell through a portal. Is there someone I should call for you?”
He stared at her. She could see the moment he decided not to speak to her.
That situation didn't change much all day. The kid walked himself up to bed and peered around at Jazz's old posters. He seemed to want to be alone, but Maddie caught him watching Dani and Dan playing catch in the yard. She made eye contact with him over her book and then looked back at her shrieking kids. Dan was doing flips on the trampoline and launching his sister in the air, catching and tossing her back up in the nick of time between flips.
Their new boy closed his curtains.
“I was thinking about Dante,” Jack said, bringing out a pitcher of iced tea. “Or, how about Jasper! Eh? Eh? You know, like Jazz-per?” Jack belly laughed.
“He probably has his own name,” Maddie said calmly. She'd estimated him at 16 or so, anyway. But whatever. If he wasn't going to give them a name, they did eventually need something to call him. And they needed to sort out accommodation fast, before Jazz got back from her college tour trip.
“Let's go with Jasper until he gives us his real name.” There were enough Ds in her home, honestly.
She lured Jasper out of his room for lunch. He sat at the kitchen table and watched them all warily. He only ate what they ate.
Danny arrived mid-meal. “Mom! Dad!” There was a whumpf as he probably threw himself onto the sofa. “We wanna go to Elmerton, that ok?”
“You should take your brother with you,” Maddie called back. “He needs clothes.”
“What?” Danny clearly pried himself up and came into the kitchen. Maddie silently offered to make him a plate. “No, I ate at Tuck's. Dan, what'd you do to your clothes?”
“Nothing, you pathetic worm,” said Dan, who really was a sensitive boy. “I am not the topic of discussion, you blithering fool.” He jerked a finger at Jasper. “New one.”
Danny stared.
Jasper looked uncomfortable. He gave a sort of hello nod.
“He's, uh, he's not-”
“Not a clone or alternate future version of you, nope,” Maddie agreed. “Though he did come out of the portal. We wondered if he might be a ghost, but it didn't seem necessary to ask.”
Jasper full body flinched at the word “ghost”, but he looked confused.
Danny squinted at his new bother who, it must be said, did look a bit like a Fenton already. “Not a ghost,” he said after a long pause. “But a little undead. Not sure what kind. But yeah, you're walking dead, buddy.” He clapped Jasper on the shoulder.
“You'll fit right in!” Jack cheered. “Dan is half dead! So is Danno! And so is Dani here! And-”
“Thank you, Jack,” Maddie cut him off. “It might be a sensitive subject, don't you think?”
“Nah,” said Danny, stealing food out of the pan despite saying he wasn't hungry. “We aren't that sensitive. Like-” he looked at Jasper and explained: “I got electrocuted to death in the lab two years ago. Dan is from an alternate future where everyone he loved died, so then he killed everyone else on earth. And Dani is a science experiment baby.”
“It's true,” Dani said solemnly. “I'm a work of science.”
“You make me sound so uncool,” Dan complained, stabbing at his spaghetti.
Jasper laughed for the first time. He himself seemed surprised by the sound. It was hoarse but there was promise there.
When the boys were off at the mall in Elmerton with Sam and Tucker, Maddie called up Vlad.
“You want to come here?”
“I’ve got more kids than I have rooms in my house,” she said wryly. “So if the offer is still open…”
“Yes, of course it is,” he assured her. “But- most of the little ones are still in the Ghost Zone, correct?”
“They're not big enough to leave yet,” Maddie agreed. “Which is why I need to be near a portal.” The ghostlings were staying with the LunchLady and Box Ghost, but they needed to be able to be in touch. “But no, I've got another one.”
Glass shattered in the background. “Another- what happened to Daniel this time?”
Maddie laughed at how flustered her old college friend got. “Nothing to do with Danny, actually, this one fell out of the portal. He's some level of partly dead, but we don't think he's a ghost at all.”
Left unsaid was that they needed to do a lot of research to figure out what other possibilities there were. If they could get into contact with Danny's GP, he might be able to get them on the right track.
“Well.” Vlad took a moment to rally. “When will the family be arriving?”
Two months later, all the kids were pretty settled in.
Jasper had never shared a name, but he was happy to let them call him Jay. He was a phenomenal big brother to Dani. He wrestled with Dan. He bullied Danny into doing his homework. It had been something of an administrative nightmare to get Jaspen enrolled in school, but Vlad had pulled off whatever magic trick he'd done for Dani (applied a lot of money to the problem, Maddie supposed) and Jay had settled in very well.
“Your debut in society,” Maddie hummed, making a point of straightening Jay’s tie. He was growing already, she was sure of it! He was going to wind up as tall as Jack.
“I've been to parties before, Mom,” Jay drawled, and then flushed a dark red that meant he didn't want to be asked questions. Maddie tweaked his nose instead of answering.
“But this is the first one where Vlad's introducing you to his business friends!” She said, already dressed up for a fun night. Vlad had flown them all in on his private jet for the day.
“Queen is a family man as well,” Vlad had said the night before, aiming for calculating and coming off soft. “It will put him off his guard or perhaps make him sick with envy that I have brought a higher quality child than he could ever manage to produce.”
They arrived together, Maddie on Jack's arm, keeping her flock of kids within eyesight as Vlad led the pack. She had a perfect view of Oliver Queen seeing them arrive, the smile dropping off his face, and him choking on his drink. He did look very silly, Maddie had to admit.
“Inept,” Vlad hissed, very pleased. “The fool can't even drink. His company will be mine-” he looked at Danny for some reason. Vlad faltered at whatever be saw. “....Through legitimate business practices, such as buying a majority of stocks,” Vlad weakly finished.
Maddie slapped him on the back. “Go get him, tiger.”

befriend rats & kill god in a lush portal fantasy adventure by jenna moran
come on a journey with me?
there - past the scaffolding, past the rafters, up above past the windows and gables and fire escapes, if you make it to the roofs -
you'll encounter environments not of this world. rooftop gardens that have twisted themselves into dense forests, church spires that have , tiled expanses that stretch into the horizon and become meadows, gutter-lakes, deserts, mountains...
you'll encounter them, too, if you really look: the rats.
they want to show you these places, navigate them, map them, study them, know them. they want to befriend you, guide you, tell you their stories and weave new ones where you feature alongside them. if you want to make any headway, up there on the roofs, you'll need their help.
after all,
this is a place where the gods do tread. if they find you creeping about their domains, they will find you, kill you, transform you, dig their hooks into your very soul and never let go.
the rats know a secret.
gods can be killed.
you are the key.
the far roofs, currently crowdfunding, is home to some of the best role-playing game i've ever had. participating in several playtests has completely sold me on its viability as a system. notable are its set of unique oracle mechanics that tie into its freeform roleplay system, determining the physical and emotional outcomes of different events. gather hands of cards and tiles to weave together magic that can alter even monumental fates, fight peril with dice rolls, and collect components for spells and make headway on character advancement by spending time getting to know your companions, both human and murine.
it is, of course, written by dr. jenna moran, best known for previous innovative ttrpg experiences about divinity, such as nobilis, glitch, chuubo's marvelous wish-granting engine, and wisher, theurger, fatalist (WTF).
the philosophy of the far roofs is that dungeoneering is about the journey - the sights you see, the meals you make, the tales you tell, the companions you gain and lose - as much as the monster-slaying. each combat is a descriptive crescendo of the experiences faced up until that point, encompassing everything you've felt thus far. if any of this intrigues you, then, well... come on a journey with me?

°•IF THE BG3 COMPANIONS BABYSAT YOUR KIDS!•°
Tumblr media
Lae'zel
Congratulations your children are spending an afternoon at boot camp!
You can rest assured they will be treated fairly at least.
No favoritism going on here.
Anyone who misbehaves shall be sent to solidarity confinement and left there until....Idk
If they want a snack they WILL have to fight one another in a duel to the death.
Or at least until one of them falls down and cries.
To the winner go the cookies.
Or more accurately maybe some giant space hamster jerky.
Karlach
This is assuming her engine has been fixed, naturally.
The kids absolutely love Auntie K.
Legit can carry them all on her shoulders at once.
She gives the best hugs too and is always so nice and warm.
She is up to play any games with them! Especially ones where she pretends to be a monster and chases them around.
Very protective of the little ones.
Brings them new stuffies each time she visits.
You MUST remind her constantly to watch her language around the little ones!
Gale
Arrives via magic portal.
Brings Tara to help him.
Takes it very personally if one of the children don't like him.
Tries to impress them via magic and creates a magical illusion to entertain the kiddos.
Attempts to teach them everything he knows about the weave.
Takes it very hard if the children fall asleep during his lecture.
Must be consoled by Tara.
If any take an interest in the weave they immediately become his favorite.
You'll probably end up coming home to your home appliances floating or having some kind of enchantment on them.
Halsin
Yes he turns into a bear and lets them ride on his back.
Most time is spent outside enjoying nature and all of its beauty.
Will carry the littlest one on his shoulders at all times.
Always brings healthy snacks, mostly fruit like apple slices.
Proceeds to take them to a nearby pond to feed the ducks.
Widdles them little animal figures to play with.
No TV or video games. The thought of technology taking over their lives makes him sick.
We play outside or we don't play at all.
Doesn't mind them grabbing at his ears, if they can even reach them that is!
He has to remind one of them multiple times that he unfortunately cannot turn into a dragon.
Sad sad truth.
Shadowheart
Makes cute little flower crowns with them.
Helps the little ones feel better if any of them are afraid of the dark.
Is very good at comforting them.
Possibly might be one of the older one's first goth girl crush.
Badmouths Lae'zel in front of them shamelessly.
Always puts on a tim Burton movie or something for them to watch.
Definitely the reason for any of their emo phases.
They think she's really cool though.
Wyll
Always the first to volunteer to babysit.
Man has the patience of a saint and can handle even the most unruly of children.
Always talks them up and is very careful to never put them down.
Tells them all kinds of exciting stories of his time as the Blade.
Makes sure to adjust them to be suitable for the kiddos.
Leaves out the scary parts.
If any of them are mean to one another and can't get along he's the type to make them each say something nice about the other as a punishment.
Let's them play with toy swords and teaches them a thing or two about using them.
Never raises his voice at them. Is super calm and collected.
Loves them all to pieces!
Also may or may not take them out to get ice cream if they're good.
Astarion
Assuming this is Spawnstarion we're talking about because the vampire Ascendant would just laugh in your face if you asked him then slam the door on you.
Our sweet little spawn will also likely laugh and think you're joking at first.
"You seriously want a vampire to watch over your children?"
Assuming you pay him and be sure to give him big sweet puppy dog eyes he may consider it.
This man is a very not my child not my problem kind of guy.
Gets annoyed with all the children asking tedious vampire questions and responds with very sarcastic answers.
Does not approve of them wanting to touch his ears.
Agrees to let them see his fangs in hopes to scare them (the mischievous little shit).
The children instead think they're cool, which confuses him. He really isn't sure how to feel about it.
Threatens to eat them if they get on his nerves.
Spends most of the time on the sofa, boredly reading a magazine or watching television.
Miraculously takes a shine to one of the younger girls who call him pretty and compliments his clothes and hair.
This is also given the girl is a little mischief gremlin who pulls pranks on her older siblings.
He lets her paint his nails purple or red while she gossips about her mother/father's new partner or her siblings.
Unapologetically shows her favoritism and lets her sit on his lap and watch TV with him.
Will not bat an eye if the other children run a muck and destroy shit.
Legit just keeps watching TV. Probably some drama filled 'reality' show.
He actually finds the chaos caused by the children quite amusing.
One of the children somehow ends up on the roof.
Once the parents are home and it's time to leave. The youngest girl gives him a hug.
His eyes get all big and round and almost threaten to tear up.
Astarion is not asked to babysit again.
Sorry some of them are so short, I mostly write for Astarion so I'm not very confident at doing the other characters.
Hope you like it though!

Imagine if Bryce left the portal open to Prythian, and she took Az and Nesta clubbing. Introduced Az to the frat pack, let him smoke mirthroot, and Ruhn showed him his music collection. Ruhn, after realizing he's pretty cool, apologizes for when Bryce introduced them, and he called him a fae asshole and warning him if he ever tries to threaten Bryce again.
Cassian also joins. There's no way in hell Az and Nesta are going to another world. He and Hunt are stupid awkward at first. Then he discovers Sunball. They never shut up. Also heavy on the clubbing with Az. Cassian makes sure to go see Randall as well. They talk war. Cassian discovered shooting ranges, and it's the best thing. Az meets Lidia, and they talk about spywork when he hears her past he's extremely moved by it. Ruhn and Lidia are his favorite people out of the new crowd.
Then we have Nesta who enjoys the dancing, but Bryce brings her to the dance studio. Introduces her to Juniper, and they do dance classes together and Nesta absolutely thrives and loves it. Bryce is also showing Nesta trashy TV. If Nesta doesn't see Ember, she asks to see her. Nesta always makes sure she has Ember time when she comes to Lunathion. Ember learns her birthday and gets her gifts and makes her things. She does the same thing for Solstice. When Nesta meets Lidia, they bond traumatic pasts and people judging them. Nesta feels like she found a true companion in her, and Nesta introduces her to smutty books.
Of course, eventually, Bryce and Ember and Randall meet the Feyre, Nyx, Elain, Lucien, Gwyn, and Emerie

Hi! I wanted to know, how do you imagine the interactions betwen Tav and Raphael would have gone like, if they had been Tav’s fiend patron? (as in, they already start the game with the contract (we were robbed))
Oh, it would be such an interesting dynamic. And Raphael is ready as ever to adapt to a new situation and manipulate it to his own ends.
Tumblr media
The last few days had been an utter whirlwind of madness. Relief at not falling to your death from the Nautiloid contrasting sharply with the dread of having an Illithid parasite in your brain. A ticking time bomb.
You had wondered how long it would be before Raphael came to collect you. As it turned out, you didn't have long to wait before you sensed your fiendish patron's presence. The back of your neck prickled, a shower of sparks cascading from an opening portal caught your eye.
"I had wondered where you'd fluttered off to." Raphael's cadence sounded familiar and almost comforting to your ears, maybe he could help you. "And you've gained such illustrious companions along the way." Mildly sardonic as his brown eyes landed on Karlach who'd frozen in place while stuffing her face with dinner.
"Raphael." You greeted, breathless from the surprise visit. "It's..." You hesitated on the rushed words. "...good to see you." Despite the nature of the devil, you felt relieved at seeing a familiar face.
Raphael bestowed an arch look upon you, the corner of his narrow mouth tilting up. "I always keep close watch over my most prized possessions. When you disappeared from even my purview, I must admit to experiencing my own form of concern." He approached and took your chin between his fingers, tilting your face up for inspection. "You look a little worse for wear. Has my favorite client suffered a chance of ill-fate?" He moved your head to the side, you half thought he would open your mouth to inspect your teeth. "You have a little visitor inside that lovely head, it seems." He snaked a hand around the back of your neck, a little possessive as his gaze sharpened on something you couldn't discern. "A rather unwelcome one, on all fronts." You could intuit those last words were not meant for you or your companions.
"Can you help?" You asked, the urgency of your situation thrumming cold in your veins.
Raphael chuckled, his gaze still narrowed on your wan face. "Does the sun rise in the east and set in the west? Can a young sapling be felled by an ax?" Raphael gave the nape of your neck a squeeze. "I live to help those in need, and perhaps this...little problem squirming in your brain offers just the opportunity I've been seeking."
"Seeking? How so?"
"As ever, you delight me with your inquisitive mind, however naive to think I'd offer you such information so readily." Raphael looked down at you, your noses almost touching. "Come, it's time to go home and have a more private chat."

Technically speaking I assume Halsin doesn’t join your party while exploring the Underdark because he wasn’t originally a permanent companion. So it’s probably just a left over mechanic from that. However, I like to headcanon that he prefers to stay in camp because he’s secretly afraid of venturing back into the Underdark.
And I don’t mean it in a “oh he’s afraid of the dark or afraid of fighting what’s lurking down there”, but I mean it in a way that’s relating to his trauma in the Underdark. Because at that point we’ve seen him fight against goblins and, depending on your choice to bring him along, against the goblin leaders. He’s mentioned that he’ll kill when necessary, it’s just not the preferable choice. And when you get to the shadow curse, sure he’s not exactly happy about venturing into darkness and shadows, but it doesn’t keep him from walking head first into the Shadowfell portal to find Thaniel or going with you to fine Oliver.
But I like to think that he doesn’t join you while adventuring out in the Underdark because that’s the one thing that’s actually terrifying to him. He makes the comment that he doesn’t know what happened to the Matron and Patron of the house that kept him captive when he tells you about his history with the area. So really for all he knows, and really for the player, they could potentially still be somewhere in the Underdark. Like they could have somehow survived the attack and retreated to the shadows. And even if they’re not and they are truly dead, who’s to say there isn’t the possibility he could be recaptured and start the cycle all over again. And I could see this being heightened considering he was just freed from a goblin camp.
An offhand comment with the drow siblings in Act 3 hints that Halsin is well known in the Underdark as being able to turn into a bear. And given just how busy he was with the Grove he surely didn’t have time to return to the Underdark to explore and show to the residents there that he can wildshape. And I very seriously doubt he goes to Baldur’s Gate and do the same thing. So, like others have mentioned, I like to assume he got that reputation while being captive and his captors would brag to others that they have a surface dweller that can turn into another creature. It makes him unique and an oddity. And could make him being seen as something to collect now that his previous “owners” are gone in some way. He could be seen as a target if he were to go back. I’d like to think it’s a very real fear that he could have.
And yes, he will go into the Underdark when you make camp because you can see and interact with him, but he won’t join your party to go out and explore. So with my headcanon that he’s afraid to return there, I also like to think that he agrees to go into the Underdark but won’t go out because he feels safe at camp. Not everyone goes out with the player as they do their thing in the Underdark, given that you can only have 4 members at a time, so it leaves at least 3 camp members with him at all times. There’s people there that can fight with him if it comes to it.
So even by going into the Underdark, he’s not alone like he was last time. So in the event someone does try to stop by and scoop him back into captivity, either his previous captors or someone completely different, he has allies there with him and who will protect him. Not because he can’t protect himself, but someone that would fight to keep him from being captured again. He’s in an unsafe and potentially triggering space, but at least in the camp he’s safe.
And yes, he is the one who brought up the Underdark to begin with, but he does give an alternative route to the player and even admits that the Underdark, while dangerous, is the preferable route.
And I know he still won’t join the party until after Thaniel has been plucked from the Shadowfell, but he sets off to Thaniel almost immediately once you get to the shadow lands and won’t join until he knows he’s safe. So with that he’s all of a sudden “in the field” instead of just hanging around camp, I just like to think it’s because he’s out of a bad area and can focus on what’s important.
I’ve probably put WAY too much thought into this, but it’s just my own little headcanon for Halsin staying in your camp for the remainder of Act 1.

Uhuuh if you don't mind for the injury promo maybe 12 with splinter/lou and his boys, pls?
dialogue prompts
12. “Where are they? Where are they?!”
this one got away from me :') rise/2012 crossover babyyyyyyy
x
Splinter’s counterpart reacted to the news of their sons’ abduction with a level of dramatics that he would never ascribe to his own self.
“What?” the shorter rat (“Call me Lou,” he had said, and then proceeded not to explain why) squawked at the disheveled humans still trying to collect their breath at the entrance of the lair. “When did this happen? How did this happen? There were TEN of you!”
Casey and April both winced in face of the not-unwarranted scolding. The children had had perhaps too much confidence as they left together earlier that evening. Donatello’s computer had alerted him in the middle of dinner to a new lead on the gang whose activity they had been following for the past weeks. Raphael had smashed his fists together, a wicked grin on his face, and said they should strike while their forces were doubled and make those ‘goons’ regret robbing every pharmacy in Manhattan north of The Battery.
“Tiny feral Raph is hilarious,” Lou’s Purple had said in a deadpan. “And also alarmingly down to commit atrocities. I want to ride with him.”
And now, not even two full hours later, their human companions returned to report a resounding failure.
Casey, scowling at the floor, said, “They got the drop on us. The door sealed as soon as we were in and the room started filling up with gas.”
“They said they were chemists,” April added. She couldn’t lift her head enough to look Splinter in the eye, staring hard somewhere near his shoulder instead. “One of their colleagues was mutated about a year ago and they’ve been studying the mutagen ever since. I don’t know what they want with the boys, but they made it sound like the gas was made with the turtle’s physiology in mind. That it would outright kill me and Casey, but shouldn’t harm them.”
Lou was bristling, tail lashing. “‘Shouldn’t’ is the word they used?” he gritted out.
“Yeah. It hit them hard in seconds. But Blue—uh, your Leo—” Casey said, with an uncomfortable sideways look at Lou, “—he managed to get one of his swords out and portaled me and April away. We waited for like five minutes to see if he’d get anyone else out, but…”
But no one came goes unsaid.
Splinter tapped his walking stick on the floor once to recall their focus, warm affection filling his chest for these little Hamato adoptees who fell haphazardly into his clan.
“Lou is correct,” he said. “It is unfortunate that your team was so quickly overwhelmed. We will discuss how to better handle situations like this another time.”
Both humans stood a little taller when it became clear that that conversation would be tabled for the time being, and April finally found it within herself to meet Splinter’s eyes.
“For now—” he started, only for Lou to cut him off with a sound not unlike a cat whose tail had just been stepped on.
“Don’t put words in my mouth,” the shorter rat snapped. “I don’t care if they lost within two minutes, let alone two hours. I only meant,” he went on, with a hard look at the teenagers, “that you should have called the instant you were in danger! Why on earth would you run all the way home like this without letting us know what had happened, putting yourselves at unnecessary risk? This organization could have had additional members waiting to pick you off when you were alone! You could have at least made time to send a text!”
Casey and April looked absolutely bewildered. Their respect for Splinter was so deeply ingrained by now that it carried over to this odd likeness of him but they did not seem to know what to do with this manner of reprimand.
“Uh,” Casey said eloquently. “Splinter doesn’t have a phone.”
“There was the cheese phone,” April interjected. “Sorry, I mean, he had a landline. But the wiring got messed up awhile ago and Donnie never got around to fixing it.”
“You have seven children,” Lou seethed, narrowing his eyes at Splinter, “and you don’t see the importance of having a working phone?”
Splinter frowned. He was taken aback by the number seven, but more so by this hostility that seemed to have sprung up from nowhere.
“We have gotten along just fine. Donatello’s inclination towards technology was not inherited from me.”
“There’s no time to continue this conversation, and if we do I am liable to start screaming profanities anyway. Jones, O’Neil, take me to my boys.”
Lou was still bristling with anger, only now that Splinter was looking closer, he saw that the shorter rat was actually bristling. His fur was standing up as though with electric static.
“If even one scale on their shells has been harmed,” he added darkly, to no one in particular, “there will be hell to pay.”
April led the way to the garage at a sprint, hopping up without breaking stride to grab the keys from their hook on the wall just inside the door. She tossed the keys to Casey and claimed the front passenger seat for herself, leaving the two fathers to pile into the back of the van.
It wasn’t until she was still that Splinter noticed her fingertips were red and raw from where she had bitten the nails down to the quick. As Casey started the engine, her thumbnail found its way back between her teeth, blue eyes feverish with worry as she stared into the middle distance.
She was very anxious, for all that she seemed determined to keep it to herself in present company. Her sideways glance at Casey made it clear that she wanted to share her thoughts with him; a flick of her eyes toward the rearview mirror decided her continued silence.
On the bench seat beside him, Splinter watched Lou take out his own phone. It was a thin flat device, held in a protective case that looked like it would probably survive an apocalypse. The caller ID on the screen was a picture of that behemoth snapping turtle in a fuzzy pink hoodie, squeezed cheek-to-cheek with his tiny spotted brother so they both fit into the frame.
“Red, this is no time to screen my calls!” Lou said when the tinny automated voice encouraged him to leave a message. “Contact me at once or you are grounded for a month! No, two months!”
“They are probably in no position to answer,” Splinter pointed out, Lou’s restlessness leaving him feeling ill-at-ease. “I am sure they are fine. My sons have been in situations like this countless times.”
Lou pinched the bridge of his nose. “Yoshi, I’m going to level with you. I don’t know how to explain that it’s weird you have become desensitized to the news that your children are in danger. My Baby Blue once locked himself inside a prison dimension with an evil killing machine, and less than a year after that he almost cracked his foolish head open on that ridiculous half-pipe mimicking some superstar skater, and my soul left my body in exactly the same manner both times. That never changes. It has never gone away.”
It was disingenuous of Lou to presume that Splinter did not worry after his sons. Of course he did. They were his greatest pride and it was a privilege he did not deserve to have raised them.
But they were not the clumsy toddlers they once were; at some point, the parent must let go of the bicycle and step back, or the child will never learn to ride it.
Splinter could not say he had ever taken the time to consider what it might have been like to meet another version of himself—one who had lived a similar life but had made different choices. He almost did not recognize himself at all in the fussy, short-tempered mutant sitting beside him.
Lou checked his phone no less than eleven more times during the twenty-minute drive. By the time Casey finally announced, “This is it,” Lou was out of the van before it had even begun to slow.
“The two of you must remain here,” Splinter told the teenagers in the front firmly. He couldn’t help but think of Lou’s scolding from earlier, and added, “If there is any sign of danger, escape at once and go to the Mutanimals. They will help.”
“I texted the group chat earlier and they haven’t seen it yet,” Casey said, flicking through his phone to double-check.
“We can’t just leave you,” April added with enough stubborn loyalty that she could have been Raphael’s twin sister.
“You absolutely can leave us, or you will be grounded, too,” Lou interjected from over by the door, his voice taking on that sharp no-nonsense tone Splinter had last heard directed at Blue over breakfast to curb his relentless teasing of Donatello.
‘It is just how he and Purple show affection to each other,’ Lou had explained to Donatello, whose shoulders had begun to creep up towards his ears the longer Blue carried on. ‘That does not make it any less irritating for the rest of us though!’
‘Skill issue,’ his twins said in unison.
‘I will cram all three of you into the get-along shirt! Do not test me!’ Lou had snapped in that particular tone that caused his children to grumble and sulk but ultimately obediently subside.
Similarly, April scowled but did not seem willing to argue any further. Splinter would have expected her to give a Miwa-worthy retort that she was too old to be grounded and not Splinter’s daughter to discipline besides, but she only jerked her chin in a barely passable nod and said nothing more. An equally unhappy but unargumentative Casey turned off the headlights and twirled the steering wheel, backing the van up and parking it by the access road.
Lou had already kicked the reinforced door down by the time Splinter joined him, and he barely had a moment to think My seventeen-year-olds are stealthier than that before he realized Lou had not come with stealth in mind.
He had the first unfortunate human within his line of sight pinned to the ground with a knife in seconds, barking, “Where are they? Where are they?”
The human, caught unawares, coughed at the unforgiving pressure on her windpipe, and managed to wheeze out, “Wh-who do you—”
“You are a scientist, and therefore I know you are not an idiot,” Lou hissed, much like the animal he had been mutated with. “Do not waste my time acting like one.”
The woman scrabbled at his arms, for what little good it did. Her eyes, behind the clear visor of the gas mask, were wide with fear. To her credit, she steeled herself enough to cling to whatever mission she and her associates seemed to have rallied behind, saying, “So many incredible things could be—be accomplished—if we had a chance to study the mutagen more closely, if we had test subjects with human-like intelligence. It’s closer to magic than science, and we could do so much—”
“You would experiment on children? My children? Turn them into lab rats?” The last he said with a very personal sort of dark anger. The scientist coughed again, and her renewed struggles were a desperate, animalistic thing as she lost the last of her air beneath the unrelenting press of Lou’s hand. “Is that what you think you should be saying to me? Is that what you think will save you—an appeal to the greater good?”
Splinter dispatched the handful of people who streamed into the room in a series of swift strikes. They were unconscious before they hit the ground.
“Lou,” he said, “that is enough. We are here for our sons.”
He was not unsettled by the shorter rat’s capacity for violence. He knew himself better than that. But he did not understand Lou’s hair-trigger temper, his turtle-shaped blind spot. He couldn’t speak for the other’s students, but Splinter’s own were experienced, and tempered, and incredibly skilled. After everything they survived and accomplished together up until now, he found it hard to believe that an organization of regular humans could pose much of a threat to their well-being.
From the way Lou was acting, it was as if he was any ordinary parent whose ordinary children had been taken in the night.
Splinter shifted to intervene when the woman Lou had pinned continued to choke. Finally, Lou released her enough that she could heave in desperate breaths.
“You would not actually kill her,” Splinter chided him, no fan of theatrics.
“Someone has not been paying attention,” Lou replied shortly. “If my boys are hurt, I will burn this building down with everyone inside it. Honor can go hang itself.”
With that, he removed the woman’s gas mask and informed her that she would lead them to the turtles without making a scene, or she would bleed to death on the floor and they would find the turtles on their own. White-faced, she wisely settled for the first option.
Leading them toward the back of the building, where rooms that were once offices had since been repurposed into labs and testing areas, the woman said hoarsely, “I didn’t know they were kids.”
Like clockwork, Lou’s fur bristled with offense. “They are wearing matching Sanrio hoodies. They speak in memes. I am sure at least one of them called you a boomer to your face.”
“No, I meant,” she said, touching her bruised throat briefly before dropping her hand, “I meant I didn’t know they were someone’s kids. I’m—I wouldn’t have—sorry. We were trying to do good. I’m sorry.”
“Hmph. I will consider forgiving you in roughly one hundred years as long as my turtles are completely fine. This door here?”
He kicked it down before she could move her head more than one half-inch in a nod. There was a flurry of excitement inside, and then Blue’s voice rang out, “Daddy!”
He sounded ecstatic to see his father, but not at all shocked. His words were a little slurred as he went on, “I told them you’d be here any minute. Our cousins over there wanted to stage a break-out, and I was like. Just nap. You know? Just take five. See, Miguel’s got the right idea.”
“Hush, silly turtle,” Lou said, his tone now a complete departure from how he had sounded for the last half hour. “Come here, let me look at you all. I need to be absolutely certain no one in this building deserves to die before we leave.”
Splinter joined him inside the room in time to take in the sight of the shorter rat attempting to hold all four of his much larger sons in his arms. Orange was deeply asleep in Red’s lap, his smaller stature probably contributing to the higher concentration of the drug in his system. The twins were upright at a forty-five degree angle, and Red himself seemed groggy but alert for the most part. They were smiling as they absorbed their father's fussy attention, leaning into his hands.
Comparatively, Splinter’s own sons were swaying where they sat. Michelangelo’s eyes were open, but his head was resting on Donatello’s shoulder, Donatello’s cheek propped on the crown of his little brother’s head. Raphael was wired, digging fingers into his thighs to keep himself awake, while Leonardo seemed to have been startled out of a meditation by the door crashing down.
They all lurched with surprise to see Splinter standing there. Leonardo in particular gazed up at him with wide eyes, as if he didn’t know what to do now that the task of rescuing the seven others was no longer his responsibility. As if he had no experience with a burden being lifted away once he had decided it was his to carry.
For the first time all night, Splinter faltered.
On the other side of the room, Blue said, “I’m, uh, sorry. I wanted to get us out, but I didn’t have time for more than one door.”
“Dum-dum,” Purple said succinctly. “O’Neil and Jones would be dead if they were still here.”
“Dee’s right for once, Leon,” Red rumbled, “you made the only call you could.”
“But I should have been able to save everyone, right?” Blue said. “I’m the leader.”
“You,” Lou said sternly, holding Blue’s face in both hands, “are seventeen.”
That’s right, Splinter found himself thinking, looking down at his eldest son. The brilliant boy he taught to read, the one he taught to fold origami flowers for his mother and sister’s shrine, the one he had stopped holding one day without even realizing it. He is.

You want angst? I’ll give you angst!
How do you think the companions would react to finding out Tav was divorced? That they were able to fall in love so deeply, only to have it ripped away. Perhaps the phrase “there’s nothing quite like handing someone the knife they use to carve out your heart.” is said.
Hello my dear anon, thank you for this prompt <3 This ended up largely as angst/comfort. I'm yet to write a real Gale proposal, so took this chance. It has a considerable amount of angst to begin with, though, so hopefully that satisfies your need.
Word Count - 3277 words - CW - Angst/Comfort (Happy ending!) - Divorce, Abusive relationship
Tumblr media
“Being tied down to someone? No, thank you.”
Pale fingers spun the wedding ring mindlessly on the wooden table of the tavern as the now owner of the band spoke. Tav suspected it had been stolen from the graveyard when they had all taken a moment with Karlach to hear of her upbringing, seeing as Astarion had grown quickly bored and had resorted to pulling the petals from lying flowers. He loves me; he loves me not was the mumble they’d heard as he had kicked the dirt up with little respect for the sleeper beneath.
“But you got to agree it’s romantic,” argued Karlach in response. “Waking up each day with the one you love, riding them until you’re both hungry.”
Astarion scoffed. “You don’t need to be married for that, darling, just… turned on enough.” His eyes glanced over at Tav, and a devilish smirk crept upon his cold lips.
She knew he wasn’t interested. She’d known since the first evening where he’d tried to lure her from the party with promises of a night to remember, one where she had turned down the idea of losing herself to him. But this was the game of cat and mouse the two of them liked to play, shameless flirting, the hint of jealousy that meant nothing. At least he says it’s nothing.
Sipping from a glass of Portal Sherry, Gale spoke with a hint of conviction in his voice. The night was still young and the alcohol flowing between the group was not yet enough to loosen his practiced tongue in full. “I’m of the opinion that if you love someone, then you should devote yourself to them in full. Marriage is an important part of that commitment.”
“Gods, you could ride them and not be married.”
“Yes, but that’s beside the point, Karlach. We were discussing the concept of til death do you part, which, as Astarion was keen to point out, did not apply to him.”
Tav watched the banter with enjoyment. It had started out as an innocent conversation, the grave of the two lovers they’d noticed giving details of a marriage lasting over eighty years. The consensus had been that marriage was a pointless endeavour, either ending when one partner died, or when the couple inevitably decided they were bored with the regular sexual escapades and decided to seek out fresh meat. None of the party, of course, had been married before and all but one would probably remain that way.
She watched the ring spin between Astarion’s fingertips, the solid gold band nothing remarkable in its shine, but clearly priceless to someone at some point. She thought about the future of the item. What would happen with it tomorrow as they took on their final battle with the Netherbrain? Would it be kept and eventually sold to fund their separate travels home, or would it lie upon one of their corpses, soon to be collected by another rogue with little patience for stories of trinkets once loved?
“Well, it does not apply to me, does it?” Astarion said, running a hand through his hair. His voice lilted with a hint of smugness at the fact he would outlive any romantic partner, but Tav could see the way he averted his gaze from them with the statement. He would outlive us, yes…all of us…
“But marriage, as a concept, is very archaic, isn’t it? The idea of two people being meant for one another. Surely, it’s there just to control people,” he continued.
She wanted to agree with him there. In a way, it was about control, or at least it used to be. Each would belong to one another, a possession, ownership and rules. If she looked at it cynically, all she saw was a socially acceptable form of slavery: people signing themselves over to others in the hope of serving them and receiving ‘love’ as payment. Tonight, though, she would not be cynical. Tav would be open to the arguments and see if her unspoken opinion could be swayed.
“I still think it’s romantic. Riding or not,” spoke up Karlach, a pint of ale being brought to her lips. “So, I’m with you, Gale.” The mug was placed on the table with a slight thud, spatters of foam hitting the wood and staining instantly. “We should do one of those agreements. If we’re not married by a set date, then we marry each other.”
Gale let out a chuckle. “That may prove a tad troublesome, my dear. Astarion, as we’ve heard, is not interested in the concept of marriage in the slightest, and me and Tav are already in a partnership of sorts.”
Of sorts… Of course, he’s said it like that. He loved her; she loved him, but with the end in sight, there was little point in calling it a relationship. Tomorrow, either of them could die, or he could be taken by the goddess. There was also the matter of the crown that they’d discussed at great length. He’d still not provided a proper answer about what he wanted to do once he had reforged it: hand it back as requested, or claim it for his own, ascending to godhood. Of sorts…Maybe he’s right.
“We still haven’t heard little miss fireball’s view on marriage. She might be like me and long for the life of freedom.”
Tav glared at Astarion as he dragged her into the conversation. He knew full well what her opinion was after one drunken night and an in-depth rambling about previous partners, of which he’d had too many to recount. Her list had been rather limited, one of which she had made the mistake of marrying, and he had greedily lapped up every little detail.
---
“I now pronounce you husband and wife.”
It should have been the happiest day of her life; her friends, as limited as they were, his friends and family gathered around them to celebrate their love. The butterflies in her stomach felt as if they were great Gloomwing moths, batting their oversized wings, creating waves that would break out should she move too quickly, but she fought through them to stand upon the altar with him. Tav had been with the soldier Thomas for only a short while, but it had been a whirlwind of lust and romance which had swept her off her feet. Within six months she had left her hometown to live with him in Cormyr, leaving behind all she had known with nothing but the meagre belongings on her back. He promised her the world, to protect her and love her as she deserved, and she believed him. Yet as the cleric uttered those last words, and Thomas’ icy palm came to her face, pulling her into the firm embrace of his kiss, the doubts screamed within her mind that she was making a mistake.
She wasn’t sure when or how things changed between them, only noticing the creeping feeling of loneliness and isolation as she watched a couple from the bedroom window. They appeared to be so happy and in love. Her gaze moved to that of her husband, who slept naked beside her. The scent of Arkhen’s Hoard clung to his skin just like that of the pale bite marks on his shoulder. She knew full well they weren’t bruises, but questioning him always led to the same outcome, doubting herself, or if she wasn’t careful, feeling guilty for insinuating something he would never do…
Weeks passed, the icy hands closed around her throat, and still she blamed herself. Why had she accused him of sleeping with the barmaid? Why had she not backed down when he promised he was loyal to only her? Why had she been such a terrible wife to the man who loved her?
It was not until a friend of his appeared one day concerned for her safety. Over the months, he had observed the change in her, how she went from being someone filled with a zest for life to withdrawing into herself, reacting with a flinch whenever a hand was suddenly raised. He spoke of his worries, asked her of her relationship, and with each interaction she had said was normal, he’d been quick to tell her it was not. ‘He controls your money? You can’t see your friends without his permission? You deserve to be called that?’
The doubts of her wedding day reappeared with vengeance; the whisper turned to shout, reminding her she needed to get away before something terrible happened. But she loved him, didn’t she? Love meant sacrifices. He was protecting her, looking after her. It was them versus the world, Thomas has said.
20. Eleint, her eye blackened and swollen, Tav left their marital home with the same few belongings she had arrived with, now with the addition of her heart shadowed by abuse. What was marriage if not chains to bind? What was love if not a drug to manipulate with?
---
“...She might be like me and long for the life of freedom.”
Tav brought her glass of wine to her lips thinking over how to navigate the conversation without 1, giving too much away of what had occurred 2, drawing them into a discussion of her past and 3, not breaking Gale’s heart as he looked at her with the hopeful brown eyes she had fallen for. He’d been the complete opposite of Thomas. There was no ill intention in Gale’s words or touch, only the devotion he spoke of, as if she were a goddess and he a loyal follower. But to marry him? To wrap those cuffs around her wrists again and become his property? That would not happen. The same sacrifices would not be made again.
“I suppose that marriage is…” She let the words play on her tongue. “…a serious commitment and if two people are willing, then they should be able to do it.”
Astarion’s lips curled into a smirk. “A little ironic that you speak of commitment with no genuine commitment of your own to your answer.”
“Yeah, Soldier. Tomorrow, we save the day and you and Gale go off into the sunset. There’s going to be wedding invites, right?”
Tav felt as if the spotlight were the sun burning brightly down upon her, all eyes waiting for the answer she would give. She was standing upon the altar as they waited for the ‘I do’ that stuck in her throat, as if it knew what was to come. “Oh, well, I don’t know if things will come to that.” It had only been a few months between them all. She would not make the same mistake again.
“Okay, well say in a year.” Karlach was being persistent. It was understandable knowing her fate. Maybe this was a future she wanted to imagine she could see, a future she knew may never happen for her. Her father never walking her down an aisle.
Tav had already glimpsed the disappointment on Gale’s face, the hopeless romantic most likely already planning the proposal from the very first day they met. He spoke, his voice less certain than before, and she knew he would sacrifice marriage just so long as it meant being with her. “My love, would you possibly like to be wed one day, if the right person were to enter your life?”
“I don’t think so.”
An uncomfortable silence fell over the group, eyes falling onto drinks as if that answer had caused all humour to be drawn from the room. Karlach looked between Tav and Gale, waiting for one of them to speak, unsure if it would be safer to just retire to bed for the night.
Astarion eyed up Tav before he spoke, knowing the drama that was to come but savouring the entertainment for the night. “But you’ve done it once before. What’s the harm in going through it again?”
She scowled at him, angry at how he had shared this secret between them with little regard, at how he was drawing out her past so openly. Before she could react, Gale spoke, and she felt her heart sink, hearing the betrayal in his voice.
“Is it true? That you have been married before? Why didn’t you tell me?”
This was not a conversation she wanted in front of the others; one she was afraid would turn into an argument, an interrogation of who she was and all she had been through. “I wouldn’t call it a marriage, a more short-lived romance, maybe.” She tried to brush it all aside, hoping the answer would be satisfactory, but even with the drop in the conversation, she knew that would not be the last of the questions.
“There’s just nothing quite like handing someone the knife they used to carve out your heart.” She whispered, hoping the words would be forgotten.
---
“…become a member of…”
Freeing themselves of their tadpoles had meant a future none had really counted on. Astarion had retreated to the Underdark to raise seven thousand vampire spawn, Karlach had returned to Avernus with Wyll in a hope of finding a permanent solution to her own survival, and Gale and Tav had remained in Baldur’s Gate for a short time, recovering the crown, but more importantly, enjoying the hours of bodies entwined in unbound pleasure.
His proposal that morning had not gone as expected. She had declined marriage but agreed to continue to Waterdeep with him. Though he accepted this and would not pressure her further, he had felt rather disappointed at the outcome. There was no doubt in his mind that he would spend the rest of his life with her, so why not be married, too? She’d told him later of all that had happened in her previous marriage and rage had filled him with the idea someone would treat her that way, but this rage had also come with an idea. He would convince her he was better, that he would worship her and give her all, that marrying him would be a blessing, not a curse.
It started with a blue rose lying upon his pillowcase after he left for the academy, the petals delicate between her fingertips, the small piece of parchment with the words “Marry me” lying beneath it on the cotton. Again Tav had said no, the rose held loosely between her fingers as he had come home. He kissed her and simply replied, “As you wish.”
Each day lay a fresh rose upon his pillow, always in one of the various colours of the rainbow he had conjured over the docks for her to wake to. Each day a new note with the simple words “Marry me” and each day the reply of “As you wish.” But Gale did not give up, and Tav did not stop him from asking. Each rose was savoured until the petals fell, and each note kept hidden away in a glass jar, much like the words she held within her own heart.
One hundred days passed in the same manner, but on that day, she woke to a small garden of roses at the foot of the tower in Waterdeep. A spectrum of colour for all to see from the window, and upon the door, a single note with the all too familiar handwriting. “Marry me.” She spent the day in the comfort of the blooms, watching the bees flutter amongst the multicoloured petals, smelling the scent of the flowers as it drifted with the sea breeze, seeing as people passed by speaking of the romance in the air and wishing it was them to have met someone that loved them so. Thinking over her past, she remembered how marriage had almost destroyed her. She knew it would be different with Gale, but the fear still lay with her, a blackened thread binding her heart shut to the love he constantly showered her with.
Again another “As you wish.”
---
Rain poured outside the tower during the autumn evening, the two lovers lying together naked under a soft blanket in front of the fireplace. Roses of red, pink, and orange lay in a vase, the light bouncing off them, making them seem as if they were aflame themselves. Tav had still not answered this morning’s note, instead placing it within her pocket as a comfort as the day had gone on. 20. Eleint: the day of new beginnings.
“My love, should I stop asking?”
Gale’s voice was quiet, a resignation she had only heard once before when he was truly giving up. She felt her emotions stir, the disappointment in herself that she had made him feel this way. They’d discussed the proposals often as the days had passed, but to her it had become less about the commitment and more about the love between them. Each rose had been cherished; each note, the words she needed to know she was wanted and loved.
She sighed, not knowing how to answer. To say yes was to raise the question of their relationship in full, to say no would be open the discussion of marriage again. “I…don’t know.”
“Tav...” Gale gave a deep sigh. “Marriage to me is a union of the souls. Though some may say it as until death, I believe it goes further than that.” He stroked her hair gently, letting his fingers weave between the locks. “I think that when we eventually pass on, the vows spoken whisper to us and comfort our spirit as the light fades from our eyes. The rings exchanged help us find the one we have lost in the Fugue Plane. Marriage binds us, yes, but we are not prisoners to it.”
“You truly believe that?” she replied, her fingers tracing small circles into his chest.
“I do. I know the day you say yes may never come, but I hope at least that I can continue to ask you. That one day I might sway your heart in such a way.”
She considered his words, listening to the sound of his heart beating as her head rested upon his chest. “If I were to say yes one day, would you still give me roses?”
“I would give you everything you deserve and more, but especially roses.”
Tav turned over the thought, the memories of the last few months, of roses and parchment. The words trickled out quietly from her lips, almost merging with the rainfall outside. “Marry me.”
For a moment Gale was not sure if he had heard her correctly. Surely there must have been a part of the sentence gone amiss from him. Shifting himself, he lifted his shoulder from underneath her, positioning himself to look down at her. He saw himself reflected in her eyes, felt the way his hair swept down, hanging between them. His hand was brought to her cheek, brushing the skin lightly with his fingertips as if to make sure she was real beneath him. “Could you repeat that?” he spoke quietly so as not to break the spell.
She smiled up at him, a rebellious tear running from the corner of her eye, which he caught with the pad of his thumb. “Marry me, Gale.”
His lips caught hers in an intense show of his love for her, his body moving as if to hold her as close as was physically possible. He felt the way her soft palm moved behind his neck, how her tongue danced with his, and welcomed the embrace. Tentatively pulling his head back, he gazed down at her, love and devotion in his words as he spoke.
“As you wish.”

Just saw manly play indigo park and oh my goodness this is turning out to be mascot horror done right or at least some good handling
Mascot horror’s been kinda a meh genre since people starting riding off the coattails of FNAF (which in itself I find good but the series works better as more of a “Sit and Survive” style game instead of a open world/roaming kinda game like everything trying to follow Security Breach.)
Poppy Playtime is ok. It’s not perfect but the devs do shine with their animation skills (Even if I feel they kinda waste it most of the time with Minecraft animations and some other controversies) and it’s not really something with a whole lot of replay value (Very linear and at least in FNAF there’s some incentive to replay a majority of the games with stuff such as secrets/alternative endings and the custom night mode.)
We have stuff we do not talk about like Garbage of Banban and the fifty million other games trying to copy it.
Anyways back to Indigo park.
Yes it’s your standard affair of mascot horror but this game has a lot of charm to it from what I’ve seen. It’s clear that this project’s being made with love and has a few things I haven’t seen Mascot Horror games do a whole lot of.
Namely in the form of this game’s voice with an internet connection and companion, a goofy little guy named Rambly the Raccoon.
While having a character to act as a guide for the protagonist is a pretty common thing in these sorts of games, they either are a faceless voice over a phone/intercom, don’t show up until much later, or a simple pre-recorded infodump. Rambly is not that.
He’s met almost right off the bat not long after you start the game. While a bit glitchy, he shows right off the bat that he has is own personality to add a bit of comic relief to what is a horror game.
I kinda like to think of Rambly as a mix between Navirou (Monster Hunter Stories) and Wheatley (Portal) since he does act as both a companion character and voice for the (silent) protagonist but also interacts and comments on the environment that he’s a part of as well.
Also while a minor one, a feature for collectibles which also add a bit of lore (and humor with some of Rambly’s comments) to the game, not something we’ve seen too often in your free roaming mascot horror titles save for Security Breach (Yes there’s going to be a lot of comparisons between the two).
Finally, onto the enemies.
They actually work pretty well in the setting they’re supposed to be set in. As in, not overly gross and elongated abstract shapes that look super out of place or filled to the brim with mutations and razor sharp teeth but actually look like the characters one might find in the setting they would be in, abet still retaining that obvious “monsters out to get you look”. Kinda like the animatronics from FNAF that would be “in service” would fit appropriately in their specific location unlike something out of Garten of Banban which is supposed to be a daycare.
In all seriousness, who the fuck would be bringing their kids to a place filled with weird blobby creatures that look something out of a Pamtri video.
In other words, go check out and support the people working on Indigo Park!

Lost Without You
Whump Rating: 2/5 TW: Depression
The shadow is defeated. A portal appears and the Chain knows, this is the final one. Tears are shed, promises and light-hearted threats are made, and everyone gives a last hug goodbye. Then, one by one, they step through the portal and vanish.
They were already in Wild’s world. He’d already gone through his last portal without realizing it. The blackness swirls, sucks in, and vanishes. The champion stands in the grass field, alone. The breeze blows through the grass, turning it into waves over the low hills. Far away, a wild horse whinnies. Then silence falls again.
Wild stares at the spot where his family vanished for a long time before finally turning in the direction of home.
Things aren’t the same after the journey ends. Link—no need for a nickname, now—goes through the motions. He helps Zelda, speaks with Purah, and tries to fall into the rhythm of life. The little house in Hateno, despite how he loved it previously, is too empty, now. Each corner is filled with memories of eight other boys and men laughing, joking, and filling his life with joy.
He can’t sleep in his bed without remembering times Wolfie curled up at his feet, or Hyrule crawled in and clung to his arm after a bad dream. The horse shed reminds him of Time, chewing on a piece of straw and telling ridiculous stories they couldn’t discount. With the old man, anything could be true.
Finally, Link gives the house to Zelda for her research and sets out to circle Hyrule. He’ll check in with the other races and towns. Maybe there he’ll find the meaning he lost. Yet each place holds the happiness of people moving on, while he is stuck in the same place.
Friends marry, break up, learn new skills, and build homes. Families change; growing and shrinking, yet never dying. Their lives are ever-churning onward. With each town, Link finds himself looking forward to the next less and less. He no longer has a family to visit. Well, it’s not a bad idea to travel the wilds. He’s often more comfortable there than anywhere else.
At first, it’s a good idea. The wilds are quiet and he falls into the rhythm of nature. There are no travelers out here and he can go days without needing to speak. After a while, he starts chatting to the air, telling his missing companions about his travels.
“There’s a fox mother in a den over there. I snuck up and looked at the kits. I think she noticed me, but I made sure not to get too close. Oh, some grasshoppers; I should catch them for making elixirs in the future. You know, I really cleaned out my stores making potions for everyone.”
The only answer is the wind. Link is quiet for the rest of the day.
The weeks blend together and he fully gives up on seeking out towns. Even traveling is losing its appeal. What’s the rush? There’s no goal; no people who need him to check in. He told Zelda when he left he’d be off the grid for a while.
What’s the use of a hero after the journey is over? He’d barely had time to settle after the first one before he was dumped into the Chain. Now, an eternity without his family looms. Each day, Link rests a little more. For each meal, he has a little less. He’s just…not hungry.
Slowly, he numbs to his surroundings. He takes an infrequent wash when he comes across a lake, but there’s no one to worry about. Link wakes tired and lays on his bedroll for hours, debating getting up and moving further. He collects less until he’s only depleting his supplies, not adding to it. Well, that’s easy enough to fix; he’s not hungry anyway.
Link doesn’t know how long he’s been out here. He could warp home; warm to a shrine or a town. Maybe he should be around people. But the idea of talking to people? Socializing? Keeping up the persona of a hero? It’s exhausting.
Mostly, Link sleeps. Maybe, one day, he’ll climb back into the shrine and they can suck the life back out of him. This body is on loan, anyway. Maybe next time, they’ll find a better hero to fill it with. Someone whose family is still around to support him.
Someone is screaming.
This is odd for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that Link is in the middle of nowhere. Someone could have encountered a rare enemy, but the scream is…excited? And raising in pitch and volume.
“Where is he?”
“The gem should take us right to him!”
“Do you think he’s underground?”
“What—where do you come up with these things?”
“Like a cave—wait, look over there.”
Huh. That sounds a lot like Wind and Warriors. Silly, because they are gone. Everyone is gone. Maybe this is it. His mind snapped and now he’s hearing voices.
Footsteps get louder and Warriors looks down at him in the grass, hands on his hips. “What in hyrule are you doing down there?”
Wind’s face pops into view, showing off straight white teeth when he grins. “Hey Wild! We missed—hey.” The smile fades, excitement seeping out. “Did something happen to you? You look, uh…”
“You look like shit,” Warriors finishes. He leans down, reaching out a hand. “You good? What happened?”
Link doesn’t take the hand, just stares at them. “That’s it,” he whispers. “I’ve gone crazy. Hallucinations.”
Wind socks him in the shoulder, much too hard to be a hallucination. “Get up! Warriors got a crystal! We need to get the others!”
“What…?” Link finally sits up, then stands. Woah, his legs are kind of shaky. Warriors grabs him, then hisses as his hand closes on a shoulder.
“How skinny are you? Wild, seriously, what happened?”
He transfers his gaze to the captain, slowly tracing over familiar features. “You left.”
“Yeah? Didn’t you have people to come home to?”
Link shrugs. “Not my family.”
“Wild? Are you okay?” Wind tugs on his tunic sleeve. “Did you miss us?”
“Yeah.” He closes his eyes for a long moment. “A lot. How—how are you here?”
The captain snorts and waves a gem on a chain. Took a while, but I got Cia to make a gem that will let heroes open portals. We’re picking everyone up to see how things are going.” He looks Link up and down. “You, my friend, are in dire need of some help.”
Link stares at his feet. “I don’t…know what to do anymore.”
Wind leans against his side, wrapping him in a half hug. “You rely on your brothers. We’ll get you back on your feet, okay? Twi is never going to let you out of his sight again.”
For the first time in a while, Wild smiles. “Let’s go see our family.”

So I've never done anything like this before and idk what possessed me to do it now but here we are I guess! Each generation of this challenge is inspired by a Doctor Who (2005-) companion! Some generations are more strict or packed with things to do than others. Same with how closely they stick to the life of the companions - some things are accurate, some stuff is loosely based Currently there's 11 generations with the final one being Dan Lewis plus three bonus generations. I will be updating this challenge with future companions (Ruby etc) whenever their time on the main show comes to an end. I will also be making a TS3 version of this as soon as I can that I will update this post to include a link to Check out a spreadsheet checklist version of the challenge HERE. It is simplified slightly for ease so if you plan on doing this challenge make sure to read through the full requirements below first so you don't miss anything! If you do this challenge and plan on posting it I'd love if you used #tscompanionlegacy so I can see it LAST UPDATE 10/06/24 (keep reading for details)
Tumblr media
UPDATES 10/06/24
Complete Yaz generation overhaul
Three bonus generations (Jack, River, Nardole) added
Misc typo corrections
Changed Martha generation degree
Some generation colour switches
Tumblr media
Heirs don't need to be the same gender, sexuality etc as the character their generation is inspired by
Normal or long lifespan is recommended
Use as few cheats as possible
All asterisk (*) mark generation requirements are optional
As your heirs age up, give them the required traits in the order that they're listed
Each generation has a colour (assigned mostly based on an outfit that the companion wears in the show) and you can use it as much or little as you like
There is a connection between each generation in their descriptions but you could ignore them and do the legacy in a random order if you wanted to
If baby specifics aren't mentioned anywhere in the generation rules assume you can have as many or few as you like as long as you have at least one to continue to legacy
Basically all of this is just a guide, you should just do what you want in order to get the most fun out of this challenge
