New: Search operators for better searching!

We hear you, and we share your frustrations: it’s hard to find a specific post. You know it has a particular tag or phrase, and it was posted on this date, or at least, within a specific year. But you can't find it!

So, today, we’re excited to announce that you can use ✨ advanced search operators ✨ in the search bar now! You can now say potato from:staff year:2021 to easily enjoy that video of a potato being microwaved again.

Before we jump into the details, a couple of caveats to note:

These search operators are only available in the main Tumblr search bar. They don’t work in the search bar in individual blogs.

The search operators only work on posts created in 2017 or later.

OK! Let’s go explore these operators!

Exact phrase match

When you surround your query with regular double quotes (not curly quotes), it will match posts with that exact phrase in the post's text content, or that exact phrase as a tag.

For example, "chappell roan is roan of arc" matches posts with that exact phrase in the content, and also matches posts that have the exact tag #chappell roan is roan of arc.

Match operator

By default, the query matches the post on either the text or the tags.

You can use match:text to specify you want to search the post content, or match:tags to search the post tags. For example:

sword world match:text looks for posts with the words "sword" and "world" in the post content.

sword world match:tags looks for posts with the words "sword" and "world" in the post tags.

From operator

Use from:blog or from:@​blog to find only posts by a particular blog.

For example, halloween from:staff finds all posts by @staff that has the word "halloween" in the post content or tags.

Year operator

Use year:YYYY to find posts from a particular year.

For example, halloween year:2019 finds all posts from 2019 that has the word "halloween" in the post content or tags.

Date operator

Use date:YYYY-MM-DD to find posts from a particular date.

For example, halloween date:2019-10-08 finds all posts created on October 8, 2019 that has the word "halloween" in the post content or tags.

You can combine all the tools above to form even more specific queries:

Other syntax

As a reminder, you can already search by a tag, or by multiple tags:

Prefixing your query with # performs a tag search — that is, it will find posts with that exact tag. For example, #star wars will only return posts with the #star wars tag.

You can search for multiple tags at at time. For example, #star wars #art will find posts that are tagged with both the tag #star wars and the tag #art.

You can combine this with the new operators to find what you are looking for!

Tumblr Patio support

The enhanced syntax makes Tumblr Patio even more powerful. You can now open multiple search columns each with different fine-tuned queries that use the syntax above to get you customized feeds.

how to get the "watch along" experience with any show — old or new (and avoid spoilers, too!)

step 1: look up the dates when each episode aired

step 2: go to the tumblr search bar

step 3: type the show's tag + advanced search operators "since:YYYY-MM-DD before:YYYY-MM-DD" to target the range of days after the episode you watched came out but before the next episode aired

step 4: enjoy posts, discussions, meta, gifsets, memes, etc. that are relevant to the specific episode you just watched — spoiler-free!

Just finished BBTS and loved it!! I feel like chapter 5 from Clark’s POV must be so fun 🤩 because from Kon’s view it’s already terrible and awful and the reader gets to be privy to the interior pain. But from the outside he must look positively horrific, especially to another Kryptonian who can see much more precisely how Kon is fairly literally coming apart at the seams 👍 I love Kon whump.

i'm so glad! and oof, yeah, chapter 5 from clark's pov is excruciating--kon goes missing, tim is also missing, they're connected somehow but clark can't locate either of them no matter how hard he tries. all they have to go on is what jason witnessed, and jason didn't even know 100% of what was happening there. they do find the farm in short order because checkered shirt guy triggered the self-destruct (so no one could trace them to the second location), but that only gives them more answers + a confirmation that something seriously bad is going on. clark feels so helpless, and he's trying not to spiral into it, because he needs to be at his best to find kon, to find tim, to help bruce find them both, because bruce is also doing everything he can but analyzing any clues left in the wreckage of the farm is going to take time and what are all clark's abilities for if something happens to kon during that time? what's the point? what is he supposed to do?

and then. and then! kon's voice, calling for him, pleading for him, and clark is there in an instant--RIP to half of the WE labs' security measures that got caught between clark and the r&d level--and he doesn't even notice the kryptonite at first. his body notices, he feels it immediately, but it takes a second to register because he's busy getting to. kon, who is 1) alive, and 2) on the ground with a? giant floodlight? and 3) really, really hurt. and that's about when the kryptonite hits. and that's not even the worst part, because then clark has to leave. he has to leave kon like that, hurt and bleeding and unraveling from the kryptonite, so clark can rescue tim and make sure tim is safe and that this other unconscious man at the scene--who must be the one who did this--is secured and he has to trust someone else to do that. clark can only do what he can to get back to kon, and honestly at that point, what's a little kryptonite poisoning compared to the terror of the rest of the evening? he can endure it, because kon has to endure it.

trustworthy is an interesting concept as we are all god's fallible little idiots but im DIGRESSING ! i get what you mean ummm lets see typically if you wanna know #thebusiness on a race weekend via social media, i'd recommend following mat oxley, david emmett (now only consistently available on bluesky), simon patterson if you can stomach it (or just wait for tumblr moots to filter out the relevant bits), valentin khorounzhiy, adam wheeler, and neil morrison. in terms of the guys whose articles i actually make sure and read its like val dave and oxley, and then as needed i head over to crash.net and pick up pete mclaren and lewis duncan sometimes. all these bitches also run podcasts (oxleybom, paddock pass, the race motogp, crash motogp pod). i would rate the podcasts in that order tbh but you usually get different opinions from the different crews so theres stuff for everyone AND i think its fun to get a bead on how much opinions can vary in the paddock among the press writ large. like okay so you guys ALSO dont know for sure about this thing okay cool im doing good...
