A couple seconds after, you saw a familiar figure walking down the street. And your face lit up even more.

You stood by the window witnessing the aftermath of a sunny day — people smiling, birds singing, life awakening all around. This sight brought a smile to your face as well.

'Tis the damn day.

Every year Leon would do this. Never has he ever forgotten to buy you your favourite flowers for Valentine's Day. Although he wasn't that good at remembering dates, there were a few he never allowed himself to skip. Today was one of them.

You continued to watch him walk towards the door of your apartment building until he disappeared under the windowsill. He was smiling.

Damn, Leon. You thought to yourself.

He always made you feel like that.

Loved. So loved and appreciated you forgot any other feeling existed. Like there was nothing except this very moment, this very warmth that spread all throughout you and beyond.

Oh, he was an expert at this.

You heard the keys turning the door, like a sweet chime filling in the room. You felt yourself tingle as if you were not a grown-up married woman, but a little teenage girl waiting for her knight in shining armour to burst into the tower.

"Where's my girl?" Leon's voice unfolded across the place, being a perfect balance of cheesy, confident, and frisky.

"She's right here. Blushing already, by the way. Did you see how many women looked at you when you passed the street? They must be devilishly jealous."

"Wait, so you were spying on me?" Oh, such an actor.

"How could I not spy on such a handsome man?"

"Fair point there." He gives you the flowers, kissing you swiftly on the lips. "These are for you, gorgeous."

You return the kiss, accepting the flowers.

"They're wonderful, Leon. You're wonderful."

"Oh, I know that. You fell for my charm years ago and you're still under the spell, aren't you?" He embraced you, smiling so wholeheartedly that your own heart skipped a beat.

"You're damn right, handsome." You said, filling a glass vase with water and putting the flowers in.

Leon gave you another smile before his eyes lit up, a rare, but familiar spark that appeared whenever Leon had something on his mind.

"Let's go walk around a little."

And you went. Trekking for the closest park, you two finally felt... Normal. Yes, normal. Like a couple that spends every weekend like this. It was... A nice change.

Having reached the park, you seated on a bench. And then, a young teenage boy came over to the two of you. He addressed Leon.

"Hello! For 1$, can I make up a Valentine's Day song for you and your girlfriend?"

Leon chuckled. "Sure, why not. Anything for my lovely wife."

"Oh, wife! I'm sorry!"

"It's okay, sweetie." You said.

Leon searched through his pockets, putting out a 5$ banknote and handing it to the boy whose eyes immediately lit up. Leon said:

"This your business or something, kid? Consider it an investment."

"Whoa, thank you so much! It really means a lot! Can you, uh, can you please tell me your names?"

You spoke up first. "Y/n."

"Leon." No, but he didn’t have to sound so hot while simply saying his name.

"Got it!"

The boy took a couple seconds to take a big breath in.

And started singing.

"Roses are re-ed!"

A smile glistened on both faces — yours and Leon's. The young man carried on.

"Violets are blu-ue!" He chanted.

You couldn't help but smile even wider. The little guy was really putting his soul into this.

"Happy Valentine's Day, Y/n! Leon loves you!"

After a swift moment of somewhat awkward silence, you applauded. Seeing it, Leon repeated your gesture and reassuringly looked at the boy. Oh, we love a supportive husband.

The boy was quick to leave. Probably looking for his next clients.

You and Leon exchanged glances.

"Well, that was something." Leon grinned.

"The little singer's definitely trying his best. Let's give him credit for that."

"Yeah, we definitely should."

You two sat there for a couple more minutes, cherishing the present moment. It was a rare occasion for you and Leon to go out somewhere just like normal people. It wasn't just about his job. Leon has never really been the type of person to spend a lot of time outside the apartment you share. That's why your quality time together is usually pretty domestic, but it doesn't lessen the meaningness of it. Reoccurring death sentences made you both learn to appreciate the simple moments.

Because life gets tough. You both learned it the hard way, many times. When your husband came home all bruised. When you spent sleepless nights questioning if he's even alive, never being able to contact him. When Leon woke up after nightmares where he would lose you again, and again, and again. When he was sure that he was not gonna make it out. When he was so afraid he would not be able to come back to you, goddamn, this fear was consuming, sucking on his soul. But he came back. And he will keep coming back no matter what he has to face — he took an oath he would.

That's why this solace moment felt like mending a heart's wound. In times like this, you felt that you two could actually heal one day. Heal from the fear, heal from this never-ending trauma. You didn't even know if it was actually possible, but you tried. You both tried your best. Being with each other helped you carry through all of this. You shared each other's burdens and it made life a little more bearable.

"I wanted to tell you something," Leon says, his tone soft and discreet.

"What is it?" You ask, turning to his side and looking him in the eyes.

"It's really nothing. It's just something I had on my mind for a while. You know I'm not very good at vocalising these kinda things. But I felt like today's occasion was a good reason to speak up on this."

You decided to play it off sarcastically. "Oh-oh. Sounds serious. If we weren't already married, I would've thought you are proposing."

"Oh, come on. I'm about to say something good for once."

You giggled. "I'm just kidding. Of course, love, go on."

Leon tilted towards you a little. "I wanted to say thank you. For everything, really. For every time you've been there for me. For staying with me. For choosing me. Not gonna lie, when I was younger I wasn't even sure I would ever find anyone who would be alright with what I do. I kind of accepted it, that I would end up alone. But here I am. Happier than I ever was. With you. Saying cheesy pick-up lines every time I see you wake up by my side."

You smiled warmly.

"Leon, I know you like the back of my hand. You're such a hopeless romantic. I've seen this in your eyes the very moment you said «I love you» for the first time. I will never forget that look you gave me. You still look at me like that sometimes and every goddamn time my heart flutters. I felt like all of my previous... situationships that cut me to the core were worth it."

"It's like in that song you like. What was it? Without all the exes, fights, and flaws..."

"We wouldn't be standing here so tall. Yeah. That's true." You nodded to Leon's words.

"We've been through a lot, haven't we?" He sighed.

"That we have... That we have."

Leon put his arm over your shoulder, resting his head on top of yours.

"I love you, Y/n. Happy Valentine's Day."

You couldn't help but smile at how special this moment felt. You lived for these. There was nothing better than this.

"I love you too, Leon." You smiled softly and then placed a gentle kiss on his lips. "Happy Valentine's."

Kissing you back, Leon gently put his hand on your cheek, looking into your eyes with a tender, loving expression.

"To many more." He said.

About Me

When did you first start writing?

Only two years ago. I used to only fantasized about scenarios, dream stories, never feeling confident enough to put it to paper, but then I did and I fell in love with it.

Are the genres/themes you enjoy reading different from the ones you write?

Absolutely not! Romance and fantasy, those are my go to genres in reading and writing. I'm also okay with adventure, but romance has to be part of it. What can I do, I love romance~

Is there an author (or just a fellow writer!) you want to emulate, or one to whom you’re often compared?

Not that I'm aware of. If yes, not on purpose.

Can you tell me a little about your writing space(s)? (Room, coffee shop, desk, etc.)

Everywhere. I don't really have a writing space, just a little corner with my laptop, because I can literally write anywhere. Sometimes I get a sudden urge to write something down, so I grab my phone, fight autocorrect (I write in German, but my phone's keyboard is also in English, so sometimes it thinks I'm writing in English and messes everything up), and write it down.

What’s your most effective way to muster up some muse?

Listening to music. Everything works better with music. I come up with scenes, or even develop an OCs character through a song that I connect with them. It really helps.

Did the place(s) you grew up in influence the people and places you write about?

I don't think so…to be honest, I like to be very vague about the places my stories take place because I don't want people to recognize things. Wait, let me explain! When I read a story where the place isn't described in detail, it makes it easier for me to immerse myself. Sounds weird, I know, but I feel restricted if you describe every nook and cranny, and that's why I give very vague descriptions.

Are there any recurring themes in your writing, and if so, do they surprise you at all?

As established before, I'm a huge romance fan, so I have a lot of recurring romantic themes. And no, they do not surprise me at all, because they are very much welcome~

My Characters

Would you please tell me about your current favorite character? (Current WIP, past WIP, never used, etc.)

Oooof, okay. I love all my OCs, but if I had to choose between the ones I'm writing right now, it would have to be Daisy. She's from my WIP "Daisy" and is the sweetest, softest, purest OC I've ever written. She is a joy to write because my other OCs are either very traumatized (Leon) or the worst human being to walk the earth (Azul). Daisy is like a breath of fresh air, a break from strong, witty characters.

Which of your characters do you think you’d be friends with in real life?

Without a doubt, Sophie from "Memories of the Future". She would be a joy to be around. She's extremely extroverted and I'm painfully introverted. She would do all the talking and social interactions, but would never leave me behind. She is friendly and easy to get along with. I describe her as a "Sonnenkind". Literally translated "a child of the sun". It means she has a sunny disposition.

Which of your characters would you dislike the most if you met them?

Azul. To put it in simple words: he is a bitch and will most probably make me cry.

Tell me about the process of coming up with of one, all, or any of your characters.

It's a pretty simple process. There's not a lot of thinking behind it. They are the most natural thing that comes to me (easier than the plot hehe). The only one I really put a lot of effort into is Azul. I created him while I was playing a game (The Arcana: A Mystic Romance), but developed him outside of it after I finished the game. He was never meant to be what he is now (an asshole) because when he came to life, I didn't even think about writing at all. For some reason he stayed with me and I just used him whenever I daydreamed or made little scenes in my head while listening to music.

Do you notice any recurring themes/traits among your characters?

Oh yes, yes I do. Tall, scary but actually soft. Witty, never seems to be serious, but is the most serious when necessary. Petite but headstrong… I could go on and on.

How do you picture them? (As real people you imagined, as models/actors who exist in real life, as imaginary artwork, as artwork you made or commissioned, anime style, etc.)

I'm very particular about what my characters look like. I have Pinterest boards for some of them filled with faces that could potentially look like them, but I mostly go for real people.

My Writing

What’s your reason for writing?

Because I like doing it~ It's as simple as that!

Is there a specific comment or type of comment you find particularly motivating coming from your readers?

I love any kind of comment, but I love it when a reader agrees or even disagrees with a choice a character has made, because that means they are invested in the story, that means they are experiencing the story.

How do you want to be thought of by those who read your work? (For example: as a literary genius, or as a writer who “gets” the human condition; as a talented worldbuilder, as a role model, etc.)

Nothing much, to be honest. Just as a girl that writes compelling stories~

What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer?

I think the romantic aspect is what comes out the best. I like writing it a lot, so maybe that's why I feel like it's a strenght.

What have you been frequently told your greatest writing strength is by others?

I've been told that I write good plots, that my ideas are interesting.

How do you feel about your own writing? (Answer in whatever way you interpret this question.)

I really like it. I like how it grew, how it developed through these two years and I like how it keeps developing.

If you were the last person on earth and knew your writing would never be read by another human, would you still write?

Dark question, okay. I would be very lonely, but I would still write. I love writing, and I love reading what I write, so I would still do it until my last breath.

When you write, are you influenced by what others might enjoy reading, or do you write purely what you enjoy? If it’s a mix of the two, which holds the most influence?

I think it's a subconscious mix. I do write purely what I enjoy, but I think I get influenced without wanting to.

Cleon Song Week (day 3)

Day three: Old School Have You Ever Seen the Rain? - Creedence Clearwater Revival

It’s hot, way too hot for the beginning of October, that's for damn sure.

The car they've ‘borrowed’ has a busted AC and despite fiddling with it, Claire can't get it going again. They've resorted to rolling down all the windows and having to live with the noise of the air roaring by. Shockingly Sherry is passed out in the backseat, oblivious to the noise and Claire laughs when Leon fusses about her taking off her seatbelt to stretch out.

The AC is out, but the radio still works. As they’re heading west down a two-lane highway snatches of local radio stations squelch in and out. Wrestling off her boots Claire sticks her feet out the window, leaning down to adjust the dial until it’s clear.

“Someone told me long ago-“

Claire leaves it, reclining as far as the chair will go, smiling widely at Leon. “You know this one? Reminds me of my parents.”

“There’s a calm before the storm-“

“Only from dive bars.” Leon nearly shouts back at her, then gestures towards her legs. “I can’t see my mirror.”

“Hey man, you didn’t let me drive, I get radio and passenger rights.” Claire laughs at his disgruntled face. “There’s no one else out here, you’ll survive without it.”

He’s not mad, she can see it in his expression, despite him keeping it pointedly away from facing her, there’s a slight smile at the corner of his mouth.

“I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain? Comin’ down on a sunny day?”

They sit in companionable silence, Sherry still dead to the world despite the windows and radio and how often Claire turns to check on her. After the third time she does it, Leon reaches out a hand and grabs her wrist in the barest hint of a restraint.

“She’s fine.” Leon assures, half-smiling at Claire and letting go. “You’re making me nervous, quit it.”

“Nervous?” Claire says, letting a hint of a mischievous smile creep into her voice, pointedly taking his words in a different route.

“Correction, terrified.” Leon laughs, shaking his head. “You’re a menace.”

“Yeah! I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain?”

Claire winks then tips her head back against the headrest as the song ends. “Well this menace got us a car. Though if I had know about this shit weather I would’ve gotten a convertible.”

Slitting her eyes open when she hears him move, she watches him reach for her, like he’s thinking about touching her arm or hand but drops it back onto the steering wheel with a rueful shake of his head. Damn.

When it gets late enough into the afternoon they pull over at the least shitty looking motel for the night. Claire registers them while Leon anxiously checks for bedbugs, only allowing them all onside once he’s done; Claire stands at the door with an amused smile, hands on her hips as Leon gives the all clear, Sherry beelining for the TV.

“Hey you.” She says when he joins her on the bench outside, handing him a lukewarm beer that he grimaces over.

“I was thinking Yuma.” He says after a few minutes. “As a start, then… Well, I don’t know from there. But there’s got to be a way to check for your brother and the other S.T.A.R.S. officers.”

“We’ll figure it out.” Claire agrees, crushing her can under her boot heel. “As long as we keep Sherry on the move. That’s the first thing.”

They both don’t have to say it aloud how little they want Sherry to be taken from them, haven’t talked about what they’d do to stop it. Leon nods.

Watching the sunset for a minute more, Claire sighs, stands. “Guess I’ll check on her.”

“She’s good.” Leon says, catching her hand easily as she passes. When Claire shoots him a questioning glance he looks as baffled as she feels.

But he doesn’t let go. Claire moves to stand in front of him, staring at their hands with a creeping smile, “Got something to-“

Leon sits up and gently tugs her down to his level, and he is so stupidly, charmingly, polite, knowing he’s as much as a menace as he accuses her of being- checking her expression before kissing her. A good kiss, one that has her hands in his hair as she leans down to him, his hands on her waist.

“Very smooth, Leon.” Claire laughs, leaning her forehead on his. “Very smooth.”

what was your favorite part of the design process for the spritework/character art? did you have any outside media like songs or things that influenced any specific characters :3?

I think my favourite part of designing characters in general is figuring out their palettes (even if I'm not the best at picking awesome colours). It's definitely the easiest part of the whole process for me at least.

I think I mentioned inspiration things on character posts... Some of them off the top of my head:

Maddaton: Spinel (SU), probably Marine (PKMN) subconsciously

King RUDOLPH: Vintage Father Christmas pictures in general, Eggnog Cookie (for the cloak...), John Krasinski with a beard (seriously.)

Undyne: JRPG protagonists with impractical bits of armor on only one side, Sunny's Papyrus design (I wanted it to look like she was emulating him!); not specific to just her OS design but I draw her hair like a fish fin because of this cool fanart.

??????: One person said Dirk but it's actually closer to Lil Hal. Also Doc Scratch, but those are both technically Dirk so I guess they're still correct? Also old school computer terminals (the black and green text ones). The most blatant Homestuck reference guy out of everyone. You don't even know half of it yet.

Toby: Does Toby Fox himself count? He's wearing the same GameBro shirt as the one from that picture with Shigesato Itoi. You can probably guess about the Toblerone (Broblerone???) he has in the key art

Sans: Sans, but like the one in the Xbox port's casino with the visor. I drew it more like the Sun Visor gear from Splatoon.

- leo and donnie will take off their respective prosthetics as jokes often. leo will offer someone a hand and detach his arm. donnie has thrown their leg at people. more than once. theres compilations of it. theres an unexplained no context video on leos twitter of donnie in the living room, detaching their leg, opening a hidden compartment and then proceeding to shake out nearly a thousand fake plastic spiders along with a truly uncountable amount of batteries. the video ends with donnie snapping their head towards the camera and shouting "DON'T REVEAL MY SECRETS DIPSHIT" before lunging at leo

- theres multiple videos of the disaster twins being a disaster as raph slowly approaches from behind them, scruffs them like cats and then flings them over her shoulder like particularly unruly sacks of flour. theres also compilations of her holding her siblings under their arms like cats. donnie seems to be the most receptive to it, bc they could be angrily ranting snd then raph picks them up and they just. dangle. pupils dilated and content to be carried off.

The White Fang was settling down after yet another successful mission. Ilya would ask Zarina (no, begging is a better word) to take over the cooking duties from Leon, who so kindly offered to make his infamous stew. The dinner preparations were going smoothly. Alas, she heard Milou make fun of their leader once again, joined by Saine, who seemed to learn quite a lot from both of them as they traveled together. Even if it meant going playfully against his brother, making him let out offended huffs and saying that they were just exaggerating. A sensitive lot, he called them, pouting and looking away as Saine and Milou would almost choke on laughter. It was another sunny day with a warm evening and a cool night. 

As Hawke continued to prepare the stew, she heard the talking happening in the common room. It seemed the four of the White Fang members were discussing something. Zarina stepped closer to listen in, not daring to make a noise as she was curious to hear what was happening. The conversation circled around the topic of family, discussing flashbacks where some familiar memories were touched. It was a delight to see Milou getting along just as well with others as she did with her. As an older sister, the silver-haired woman could only smile at how much brighter her younger sister’s voice was. There was a newfound sunlight, a new fire, a new brightness. As she leaned against the wall, arms loosely crossed under her chest, Zarina smiled at everyone’s happy voices. 

-We’re family. We don’t turn our backs on each other. 

How sweet. Did the two of them finally find a place they could call home? A place where they don’t need to run away from. Even if Sister - Mireil - catches up with 

A second of silence would follow those words, only to explode in happy and energetic agreements. Hawke could hear Leon move to bear-hug all his companions and laugh happily, followed by everyone’s singing laughter. Zarina chuckled softly, but not before hearing everyone call for her name. They also seemed to want to share their unbridled joy with her. Golden eyes shined with a soft tenderness as she checked the stew's condition before heading to the main room where everyone was. 

Milou’s eyes gleamed brightly. Her smile reminded Zarina of those early days when the four of them (Milou, Zarina, Elias, and Mireil) would sit together and sing songs. Then, they were a family. A shaking one, a trembling one, but a family. It was heartbreaking when it all had gone awry, losing one to betrayal and losing the other to death. Hawke knew that she couldn’t give her sister everything she wanted or deserved. They had their own lives, and there would be a day when Milou would be walking her own path. Without her older sister. Life was never sweet to them. 

But for now… 

Let her enjoy this moment of closeness. Let her enjoy Milou’s happiness and watch White Fang’s smiling faces. 

Zarina, too, was a selfish older sister. The death of Eli continued to weigh heavily on her, but seeing Milou’s smiling face when everyone was waving at her? The silverette felt a subtle warmth in her chest. 

Hey, Eli, she thinks to herself. Milou’s growing up so fast. Do you remember how timid she was? Now she’s such a troublemaker. 

Zarina chuckled when she saw Ilya approaching her first, taking the ungloved hand and leading the fellow silver-haired maiden to their gathering. 

“Now, now. What got you all so excited?” Her voice remained much lower yet still had that melodic tone as she asked everyone despite knowing the answer. 

“We’re a family, right, Zarina?” Leon suddenly asked, a cheeky smile on his sun-kissed face. Saine looked at her with hope, and Ilya stood beside Milou, all smiles.

“Naturally,” Hawke answers without missing a beat. “If we were not, I would’ve fed everyone your stew instead of making another one when you were not looking.” 

Aghast, Leon stared in shock at his comrades before looking at Zarina. He certainly looked like she betrayed him at that moment. 

“I knew it was suspicious!” 

“We owe you our stomachs, Zarina.” 

“Hey! It wasn’t that bad!”

“I think you created a new alchemical recipe, Leon. Color me impressed.”

“Ugh, Milou, shut up.”

Birthright in Conquest

Corrin has grown up within an isolated palace in Nohr alongside his younger brother and sister, Leon and Elise.

Leo will soon be making his debut at the main palace, but one night shortly after Corrin's birthday King Garon comes to visit.

King Garon's visits are few and far between, but on this night Corrin is going to be allowed to officially join the court. There had been troubles for years amongst the nobility, and the ongoing conflict with Hoshido, but Corrin was finally going to debut as one of Garon's children to the whole of Nohr.

Leo and Elise are jealous, but happy that their sibling will be free to stand alongside Prince Xander and Princess Camilla.

Everything begins to go wrong on the journey from the Northern Castle to the heart of Nohr, Castle Krakenburg. A group of Hoshido soldiers, seeking to break the seals crafted by King Garon's late wife, Arete, meet the traveling party.

Corrin is recognized and whisked away to Hoshido, where Queen Mikoto greets them as a mother. Corrin's world collapses, but things seem...nice though odd in Castle Shirasagi.

The oldest three royals are cordial, but distant. Ryoma is frequently away from the castle, and Hinoka frequently patrols the borders. Takumi speaks with soldiers that make Corrin's skin crawl.

It all comes to a head when Corrin's dragon is released one sunny day. Mikoto promised them a chance to understand what they are, and then the castle town is in ruins.

A woman singing a mournful song and dancing with water calms them, and with the help of a repentent ninja and the youngest princess, Corrin absconds from Hoshido through a glowing lake.

In the depths of Valla, Corrin learns Azura's name and the about how Anankos has throttled Hoshido. Nohr attempted to fight back years ago with Queen Arete, but she perished and Azura was taken to Hoshido. Corrin was taken in retaliation, and possibly other reasons Azura is unsure of, though she knows Corrin has ties to Valla because Mikoto does.

The destruction of Valla left Mikoto thralled to the fallen dragon Anakos, and with her magic, the royal family has either been thralled or sworn fealty to a new dragon god.

Corrin desperately wants to go home to Nohr, to be with their siblings, but they also can't abandon their newly discovered Hoshido family. How could they live with themselves if they let Hoshido be truly devoured? Their time there was not horrid - and they made tentative friends in the ninja Kaze and the princess Sakura.

Corrin resolves to return to Nohr with Azura, who is nervous to be back in a nation she only remembers pieces of.

There are no lovely reunions, because Hoshido has invaded Nohr and Nohr is putting up a violent resistence.

Corrin manages to get in touch with Elise and her retainers, and after getting in touch with some allies and leaving news for the other siblings that they are alive, but outside of the war effort, the group returns to Valla.

They come across Arete and Sumergai's spirit, and while they are able to fight them off and escape Valla again, Corrin learns the truth of their parentage and of Azura's lineage.

Corrin has a crisis they decide to put off for later - a child of a mad god? That can be dealt with when the world isn't burning.

The group returns to Hoshido, to try and stop and the war and invasion at its...well, human source. They aren't strong enough to take on Anankos himself yet.

Mikoto and Takumi have remained in the palace, and they reject peace. Corrin is forced to kill their mother, and Takumi falls in battle trying to awaken Corrin's feral dragon. They do not have a dragonstone, and thus no real control, but when Takumi falls and Mikoto is dead, Corrin remains human but grieving.

Princess Sakura and her retainers appear, and while it's a bad situation, Sakura knows Corrin was given no choice. They gather more allies in trying to track down other royals in Hoshido - Camilla and Hinoka are fighting at the front lines in Hoshido, and Ryoma is deep in Nohr crossing blades with Xander. Kaze defects and Corrin decides that before anyone else dieds, they neee to take care of Anankos. Just dealing with the human element didn't work, after all.

Before they can return to Valla, Hinoka appears and challenges them to a battle. Kaze is killed defending Corrin, Hinoka is fatally wounded and dragged away by her loyal retainer, Setsuma. Azama defects and joins Corrin's troupe.

Corrin and co dive into the lake at Castle Shiragasi, and plunge into Valla, moments before Leo rides in with a battalion. Prince Xander is dead and Leo is fleeing Prince Ryoma, who vanishes before there is a confrontation at the castle.

Corrin fights through Valla spirits, barely able to keep everyone well and fighting. Several die before they make it to Ryoma. The fight with Ryoma is brutal, and Sakura sacrifices herself to save Corrin and stop Ryoma, but Ryoma is too far gone and deals a near fatal blow to Corrin.

Corrin goes feral, and tears Ryoma apart before separating from the remaining party.

Azura attempts a pursuit, but more Vallite soldiers block the way and delays the party's reunification.

Corrin finds the feral dragon Anankos, and a fight rattles the fallen nation. Anankos should win, but Corrin's allies appear to help.

When Anankos falls, Corrin does not revert to human form. Instead, the power ebbing fron Anankos is absorbed by Corrin and they thrall all within Valla to them.

On the surface, the thralls are released, and the remainint heads of nations begin planning to deal with the lurking threat. They are tattered, but perhaps they can build a strong enough army before Corrin's power grows out of control...

Especially since the thralls may not be so loyal, as Azura uses her Vallite lullaby to frequently lull Corrin to sleep and rest and is, perhaps, trying to free them all.

A sleeping dragon is still a dragon, however.

My RECAP: Brian Stokes Mitchell at Lincoln Center Open House weekend, October 29, 2022

Every new show is my favorite, that's okay right?

Every time I've seen Brian Stokes Mitchell perform in person it has been really special in a new and different way, which seems so unlikely, but I swear it happens every time. This time, the setting was Lincoln Center's Open House in honor of the re-opening of the newly renovated David Geffen Hall. There were free events and performances all weekend long in all of the different performance areas of the new building. Stokes was set to perform in the Leon and Norma Hess Grand Promenade, which is a fancy way to say he was on a little stage in the lobby outside the new Wu Tsai theater on the second floor of the building. Side note: We had already bought tickets to an upcoming performance on November 4th in Worcester, Mass when this free opportunity popped up, but honestly, there was no way I was going to miss a chance to see Stokes sing and I'm so glad I didn't.

A pretty perfect day

It was a gorgeous fall day on the Connecticut shoreline and my best friend and fellow Stokes aficionado and I ate some sandwiches as we waited for the train in the afternoon sun. New York City was slightly warmer; sunny and 65 and perfect. We emerged from the dark and closeness of the subway into the warmth of the autumn sun and smack in the middle of a little farmer's market. 10/10 experience folks. We managed to get into David Geffen Hall at around 3:15 for Stokes's 5:00pm show. There was a fun 3-piece strings band called Time for Three playing in the Grand Promenade when we walked in, they closed their set with a cover of "Stand By Me" that had some seriously cool pizzicato.

When the Time for Three crowd dispersed, we made our way to two chairs right in front of center stage. We had drinks and chatted with the folks around us for about an hour before it was time for the show to start. Stokes was joined by pianist Joseph Thalken and went right into a 6-song set, that lasted just under an hour.

Some highlights of the highlights

I don't know how this short 6-song set ended up being one of my favorite shows I've ever attended, but it was truly a special little moment in time. A few highlights: first of all, we both felt a bit unhinged about being perceived by Stokes. I don't know if he remembered us from being in the audience (and literally right in the front) at three other shows this year, but it was really fun to get little nods and points during one of our faves "A Wizard Every Day" (x) and during "Impossible Dream." (x) Like please roll the tape, because I took videos of every song and I will be using these moments as meditation and therapy on days when I feel down. They were just pure light. As I've said on here before, Stokes just has a way of making you feel like singing songs at 1,000% just for you is the most important work he'll ever do, you can just feel that and it's really beautiful. Another cool moment was getting to hear him sing "I Was Here." (x) I hadn't heard this song live before and it was so good.

"Well I will not flicker and die like an ember / Too many men flicker and die / I will leave something behind to remember / Somehow I must.."

When Stokes sang these lines with his whole chest it was, oh I don’t even know how to express it, immediate! soaring! towering! I definitely have a new appreciation for that song now. I usually listen to the re-written version that was included in the Lights on Broadway children's book (x), but from now on I'll be giving the original equal listening time.

These were just a few highlights, but I can honestly say every new show I've been fortunate enough to go to has been my favorite including this one. I say this with zero hyperbole, it's been the joy of my life to attend these Stokes shows this year and as I find myself sitting in each different audience, I can feel my mind wrestling with itself, between paying as close attention as possible and wandering off picturing the whole scene from above in sheer awe that I'm even there at all.

When the show ended, we drifted out to the balcony on cloud nine, taking in the early evening city views and further absorbing the show. We decided to forego the subway and walk to a cool restaurant we read about some blocks away. On the way, we happened to pass by the Winter Garden and ended up buying last minute tickets to The Music Man. We got to see Sutton and Hugh in one of my favorite musicals ever, which was just the best possible way to cap off a pretty amazing day. This is honestly what I always hoped being a grownup would be like ♥️
