I find JKR personally annoying, not because of her politics directly but because she has such an obnoxious way of making herself seem like the victim at all times whilst simultaneously having a remarkable ability to dig herself into a deeper hole every time she's confronted, but I'm getting a bit tired of the way the HP fandom just says that anything they don't like about the series -- artistic choices, their fave not being presented the way they want, anything with any amount of uncomfortable complexity beyond what one would expect to find in a book written for 7 year olds -- is bad writing. Is she fallible? Yes, of course. It's still lazy and boring and petty to just say that everything you don't want to have to think about is a mistake. Many of the cases where she gets blamed for being a "bad writer" are not mistakes at all but intentional paradoxes or subversions of assumptions that are central to the themes, which should be obvious to anyone who isn't determined to find some reason to either hate her because of some personal score or to avoid putting in the mental effort of thinking about what it means.

"The author was wrong" is such a lazy take. It may be true in some cases, but that assumption serves no purpose; it's a thought-stopper. Where do you go with that? Nowhere. You can't argue against it and it opens up no avenues of discussion or insight. It's boring. You have to have some suspension of disbelief and a bare minimum of faith that the author knows what they're doing or else why are you even bothering to read/talk about something? I know that you all hate your English teacher talking about the blue curtains and that cancel culture has conditioned you all to expect that every point and moral must be spoon-fed to you because you believe in the self-fulfilling prophecy that audiences are too stupid to put things together unless they're shoved in your face, but if that's your attitude, why are you even in fandom to begin with? You contribute nothing.

So many of the complaints I see about shows lately are people being confused by things THAT THE SHOW WANTS YOU TO BE CONFUSED BY THATS THE FUN OF MYSTERY AND FORESHADOWING YOU ABSOLUTE GOBLINS THE MAIN CHARACTER IS ALSO CONFUSED AND THEYRE GONNA DO A BIG REVEAL AND EXPLANATION LATER IF YOU WOULD JUST FUCKING WAIT

hey btw if you're in the USA at  2:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Oct. 4, they're testing the emergency broadcast system. your phone is probably going to make a really loud noise, even if it's on silent. there's a backup date on the 11th if they need to postpone it.

if you're not in a safe situation and have an extra phone, you should turn that phone completely off beforehand.

additionally, if you're like me, and are easily startled; i recommend treating it like a party. have a countdown or something. be surrounded by your loved ones. take the actions you personally need to take to make yourself safe.

i have already seen mockery towards any person who feels nervous about this. for the record, it completely, completely valid to have "emergency broadcast sounds" be an anxiety trigger. do not let other people make fun of you for that. emergency sounds are legitimately engineered to make us take action; those of us with high levels of anxiety and/or neurodivergence are already pre-disposed to have a Bad Time. sometimes it is best to acknowledge that the situation will be triggering for some, and to prepare for that; rather than just saying "well that's stupid, it's just a test."

"loud scary sound time" isn't like, my favorite thing, but we can at least try to prevent some additional anxiety by preparing for it. maybe get yourself a cake? noise cancelling headphones? the new hozier album? whatever helps. love u, hope you're okay. we are gonna ride it out together.
