Addiction
This past year I've realized I'm addicted to dopamine. I never thought I'd say that but...here we are. I remember a time when there were no cell phones. I remember when there was no internet, no social media.
I remember when cell phones were introduced, there was no internet. you called or texted - that's it.
I miss those days. You could still check on your friends and family but the phones didn't come with built-in algorithms that were created for the sole purpose of addicting people to a small screen.
Now, it's impossible to do anything or go anywhere without LOOKING at your phone. It's now affecting our children. Especially since the addiction isn't just on phones. It's now been passed onto products that have been made for children (tablets, video games, ipads, etc.)
I was sitting on the couch constantly going back and forth between apps when I realized, the sun was going in and out, the weather felt nice (like spring) and here I was just wasting time. I decided to get up, get dressed, and go for a walk.
I walked for roughly 2 hours. My feet and legs were killing me after, but it helped me. Helped me clear my head; to remind me of the importance of getting out in nature, under the sun (I also got burnt around my neck and forehead). I'm beginning to see how truly dangerous our technology is to humanity. Not just kids. We always talk about how bad it is for kids but we don't hear as much about the dangers of it on adults. We think, 'Well, we're adults, we can control ourselves better...we know what is a good amount of exposure for us..." But do we? Do we really have enough control to put it down and leave it behind for even one hour? A couple hours?
Yesterday, I rested and did light chores around the apartment. I read for almost the whole day. I'm in the middle of three books and am learning a lot spiritually and mentally. I didn't look at my phone until around 4PM. It was marvelous. I could already feel the difference in my focus. while reading one of my books I was making notes and highlighting interesting points. I felt good. It's incredible what a few hours of sun, sleep, and time away from our phones can do for our overall health and well-being.
Take time to get out, smell the flowers and fresh air; walk among the trees; listen to the beautiful and calming sound of a creek or river. Just sitting in front of a fountain or waterfall can do wonders for the psyche.
Turn off the TV/streaming, put down the phone, step into the sun, take a deep breath, listen to birds, and feel the wind. You can take a book, too. If you have time and you're up for it - go for a short 10-15 minute walk around your yard or down the block/street. You won't regret it.
Nature has a way of bringing us back to itself. No matter where you are right now - make it a beautiful day.

I always feel sedentary online. Especially in regards to being on here. I feel like I never post enough, never reblog enough stuff, never follow enough people, etc. I can't seem to shake this feeling, and it just contributes to my feelings of being sedentary online. I already made a post about this yesterday (its my current pinned post at my time of writing this) so I might not get into all of it. But to be blunt: ever since my tablet and my mom both died a few years ago, these feelings of existentialism and being sedentary have only intensified. And since I made this account around the time those things happened, I associate this account with me being lazy online. And since I can't use my old tablet to prove I did more with it, I'm stuck in this horrible loop.
And besides all that, I feel like it's just a proven fact I don't do as much now. The last time I followed someone new was like 4-5 days ago. The last time I searched a blog and/or explored in depth a tag was probably months ago. And then my brain feeds me memories of searching blogs in depth more when I was younger, back when I had no account and just used my old tablet. So i seem to be guilt tripping myself over all of this. sigh...

This post has a good message, but both the post itself and the comments and tags under it made me increasingly frustrated with the terms "digital" and "physical". What do the people on that post even mean when they use this dichotomy?!
There is a difference between "digital" and "analog". A CD is digital, a vinyl record is analog. A .jpeg produced by a phone camera is digital, a negative produced by a film camera is analog.
There is a difference between "DRM" and "DRM-free". The games on Steam have DRM, the games on GOG don't. The books that you buy from Amazon that can be recalled by them have DRM, the hardcovers on the shelf in your room don't.
There is a difference between "cloud" and "local". If the streaming service removes a TV show from its library, the .mkvs you pirated are still here for you. If you don't have a cheap unlimited broadband internet connection, your access to a streaming service is limited, but you can rewatch the files on your hard drive or your Blu-rays as many times as you want. If your power goes out for a few hours, you can read an e-ink book or listen to a battery-powered MP3 player, and if the outage lasts longer, you can read a paper book without any electricity at all.
There is a difference between media that have their own value and media that are just meant to carry data. A professionally manufactured CD is likely to have a decorative print and a beautiful informative booklet, but a CD-R you burned yourself has no advantage over a thumb drive or an HDD that carries the same files.
There is a difference between media that require additional technology to access and those that don't. You need a digital device to read an .epub or a .pdf, but you don't need one for a printed book.
Which of these things do you call "physical", and why? All of them exist in a physical world. A CD and an HDD are equally "physical'. Digital data might be infinitely reproducible, but it still needs to be recorded somewhere. Anything that digital or analog data might be recorded on is destructible and needs to be taken care of. Paper is easily ruined by fire or water, and so are hard drives. A CD or an HDD take only a momentary lapse of attention to drop and break. Optical discs get scratches, hard drives get bad sectors. Any kind of medium needs to be maintained in a certain way and replaced when its time is up. Any kind of valuable data needs to exist in several copies that you have as much control of as possible and that are as unlikely to be lost at the same time as possible. That's what is important, not the semi-arbitrary market categories that obfuscate the media's actual qualities. An artificial dichotomy between, for example, "any media recorded onto a physical device before distribution" (the Urban Dictionary definition of "physical media" — which excludes many things that tumblr's average usage seems to include, btw) and "streaming or a DRM rental that is falsely called a sale" only benefits the corporations that want to suck as much money from the public as possible.

I told myself I’d never walk into my manager’s office, close the door, and then burst into tears (bc apparently a former coworker did it for sympathy and now he refuses to close the door most of the time lmao) but every day I find myself inching closer to his door, readying the waterworks
