Why is Africa Poor
Why is Africa Poor
The African continent is three times larger than the European continent and possesses the shortest coastline of any other continent on planet Earth. This is a massive contributing factor to why Africa is poor because, unlike Europe, which had access to the Mediterranean Sea and the East Asian continent, which has excellent natural rivers and other major waterways, the African continent severely…

the deathstroke vs batman arc from the rebirth era was honestly something. like i felt like it was a pretty decent idea but it had a lot of plot holes + the characterization of joey and talia were sooo weird. also i also felt there was a lack of involvement from talia and dick. in a not-so-custody-battle arc about damian, why are bruce and slade the main focuses?? i'd personally say talia and dick are arguably the most important (parent/mentor figures and just) people in damian's life
also it was interesing in the way that there were so many slade/bruce parallels throughout the arc --- like the grieving their dead kids (for context tim had literally JUST "died") + viewing themselves as a curse + "the mission/contract above all" + focus on family + alfred and wintergreen being buddies + "__ is real and __ is the mask" + strong loyalty to their own moral code + how they are such good physical combatants but also brilliant tacticians and inventors + bruce talking about his mission like it is his forever war and slade's backstory as a soldier etc etc and this was especially interesting in regard to how nuanced they are as people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
deathstroke (2016) #32 & #34
but I think what could have made it even better was if there were more of a focus (+ more obvious) talia/dick parallels
i feel like this is overlooked but dick and talia are fundamentally very similar characters -- for example, their histories are similar. talia's goal is to become the leader of the league of assassins when her father dies/retires and spends her whole life training for it, only for her father to choose someone else to be his successor, similar to after knightfall, when jean paul valley became batman instead of dick, and even as reluctant as dick is, he's still upset that bruce chose someone else over him. additionally, talia and dick have their fears about forever being in their "father's" shadows (something slade taunts talia with in shadow war and something that is emphasized a decent amount in dg comics); plus, after they take their "father's" mantle, they expand it into something bigger -- like with talia running leviathan (and the demon's shadow?) and dick helping with batman inc and working with the titans + "batfamily"; also, they are similar in  how their commitment to bruce specifically impacts their relationships with the other people important to them (for example, dick and the titans, and talia and her dad -- the gotham knights storyline retribution part 1: sons and lovers is a great story about how this, as is the 1999 titans run); also regarding them as characters, in the older comics, they both are portrayed as younger and more naïve, paired with them also being reckless and eager to prove themselves (sometimes) (also. in regard to age -- in talia's introduction in May of 1971, she says she's studying medicine at the university of cairo + dick went to college in december of 1969, so they are vaguely similar in age (also bruce calling dick and talia "the kids" in batman #232 was kind of jarring...)); also in talia's second EVER appearance, (in a set up by ra's al ghul), both she and dick have been kidnapped and bruce and ra's "team up" to find him (it was ra's testing bruce's detective skills to see if he was a good match for talia) but TELL ME this doesnt feel like the set up of some parallel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
batman (1940) #232
also a big part of both their characters are being manipulative as hell, which I think is emphasized so much in talia but not enough as it used to be emphasized in dick; also both of their genuine compassion and fierce protective instincts to children ESPECIALLY (for example, dick with tim or damian and talia with damian and the prince of swarak (and ik shes recently been characterized as an abusive or distant mother but. In my heart that’s not true. read batman (1940) #257), nightwing (1996) #138 and especially #146). and lastly, how love, devotion, and loyalty are CENTRAL to their characters…. also ofc their love for damian
Tumblr media Tumblr media
talia being protective of damian from detective comics (1937) #839
also they're pretty protective for bruce's other sons (niche reference but talia worrying about tim in nightwing 1996 was very cute!! + dick kissing tim's head)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
from nightwing (1996) #138, #139 & #140
plus you have to acknowledge their petty rivalry (i'm talking before damian was even born + the "you can either pick ME or HER" vibes) but you also have to acknowledge their very mutual respect for each other. i think we deserve a team up book. i deserve it 💔
Tumblr media Tumblr media
nightwing (1996) #144 & batman (1940) #330

Episode 64 - Burial Rites
More archaeology, living for this.
Donna Gwynne.
Red Sea, Egypt.
Very illegal trip, I support Donna chasing her dreams no matter what.
So which illegal activity family do we think was involved in this? I say Fairchild.
Wannabe Indianna Jones is so funny.
Stavo? I’ll have to look this up when the episode is done.
Holy shit I finally got a name right.
A steady 3 years of illegal shit. Impressive.
Ah Donna did not pass her ethics class I see.
Quite Albanians, Barry and Paul, acted as the muscle.
Paying off Cairo police is actually so believable.
Symbol of infinity on the entrance.
This is another disgraced pharaoh situation, less excited now.
I want more shadow people tbh.
Significantly less ornamentation, dude that is such a red flag.
Sell the copper for scrap.
Man the ancient Egyptians really didn’t like this person.
Stavo crash out has started.
Dice!?! Another reaper?
Being grabbed by the mummy is so gross.
“Of course it can’t scream. It has no lungs” that made me choke on my coffee. It has no business being that funny.
Sympathising with the mummy shows that Donna isn’t as shitty as I was starting to believe.
Well now the mummy isn’t worth anything.
A knife will do absolutely nothing.
The mummy wanted assisted suicide.
Now we know why the government said no to exploring it.
Jon is a mummy hater.
Supplemental
Jon and Basira are having a friendship breakup.
Poor Tim has more material to gossip with.
How much do we want to bet that the mummy is actually another archeologist that lost a dice game? Or it could be that they were the first attempt at the reaper situation and the Egyptians just decided that it wasn't worth it.
While Jon dislikes criminals giving statements, at least they understand confidentiality. Like Donna gave us nothing to figure out which family was involved. We’ve got the Lukas family and the Faorchild family. I’m leaning towards Fairchild only because we’ve seen them go looking for stuff before. But the lack of endless _____ pocket dimension, is the only part that is saying that it isn’t them. Could be Lukas just because they’re a bunch of rich weirdos who can definitely afford illegal archeology expeditions.

One thing about doing a Lazarus Pit read:
The Damian pregnancy timeline makes even less sense in my head, because if you're using Son of the Demon as the basis this probably happens either immediately before Jason, or perhaps during Jason and before Tim, because Talia implies in Bride that she hasn't seen Bruce again in the interim.
Which means if Ibn was actually canonical, he would be somewhere between 3-5 years old when Damian first appears after OYL. Because Tim is a very very very new Robin in Bride (he doesn't have his costume yet), and Talia has presumably been out of sight for a year having Ibn, and Jason probably became Robin at MOST 2 years prior to when Bride seems to be set, so if Talia had met Jason she has turned back up almost immediately after giving birth.
And realistically, even if we shove everything back to around the point of the 'wedding', that takes place when Dick is 18ish years old and at Hudson. I can only make Damian 6-7 by using that and Dick remaining Robin until 19.
Of course, as I have reiterated, the Demon Trilogy are specifically non-canonical and a separate universe, and instead interact with the Kingdom Come verse.
But as we know, Grant Morrison didn't read back to check any basic things like 'what happened with the pregnancy' and 'when did Bruce and Talia meet' (while Dick was at Hudson! Dick gets kidnapped from Hudson in the very second story!)
So given we have COIE AND Zero Hour AND Infinite Crisis to affect retcons to this timeline (rather than a certain writer not doing basic research, it was Superboy punching time) I presume we now push Bruce and Talia's first meeting well back. Because for timeline reasons for Damian to be 10 at OYL, Bruce and Talia need to have met at least 11 years earlier. Which in timeline maths puts it in Year 6 or so, when Dick is 13-14 years old.
Now I don't mind filling out Dick's teen years somewhat more, we retcon and ignore a whole lot of stuff that actually happened back then, but also it changes the dynamics somewhat, and makes me very sceptical of Son of the Demon being in any way canonical, because Bruce just decamped for a month or so to work for Ra's? With a 14 year old left behind with Alfred? Suuuure.
On the other hand, moving the timeline back to Year 6 for conception means we can move Bruce and Talia a lot closer in age. Year 1 is traditionally when Bruce is 25, so for Year 6 he's about 30. Talia, meanwhile, when she first meets Bruce is a 'medical student in Cairo', which suggests she has her Bachelors and is studying Medicine, so somewhere between 21-25. A 5-6 year age gap works nicely here and is perfectly reasonable.
Also in terms of storylines about how Talia could have thought there was a miscarriage (an EXTREMELY early one let me point out): she was actually pregnant with Athanasia AND Damian and miscarried Athanasia.
There. You're welcome.

I’d self medicate too if I knew my career predicated on my continued relationship with Tim Burton. She probably realizes if he gets cancelled, bites the dust, or has a falling out with him then her opportunities may dry up. I mean what of her work was notable that was not linked with him or Netflix?
Girly better carve out her place in the industry real quick. Or find another director to entangle herself with.
Let's play a game 🎯👁️👃🏽👁️🎯
What do these bitches have in common?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All of these characters are [in some way, shape/form, and to varying degrees] angsty teens with Mommy Issues.
I think she FAFO regarding the current limitations of her place in Hollyweird. A barely 5' tall actress whose voice makes her sound perpetually 16 (holy shit, I needed her to STFU in a few of the scenes in Finestkind) doesn't have that many options for diverse roles other than High School Student or Girlfriend. While she can't fix her height (and if she fucks with her baby face any more than it is, she'll ruin it), she can find a voice trainer/vocal coach to get her voice to sound more mature. Maybe that's why she took up smoking after Cairo.
Scream was notable, but we know what happened there. Her next three live action/unreleased roles aren't horror, so that's something?
I don't think she'd have a falling out with Tim, but her picking up the Carter-Depp mantle is proving to be a challenge. I'm sad that I don't think that he'd cast her as the 50 Foot Woman because how fucking hilarious would that be, to go from 5 to 50 💀
If she was really smart (...Savvy?), she'd go back to Disney and take up the Pirates mantle. That's big money ✨forever✨, and she wouldn't ever have to worry about the lack of jobs (or her limitations) again. She'd be able to do whatever music or behind the scenes crap she wanted to do. She has the perfect comedic timing for it, and there's no better casting for Captain Jack's daughter than her. Except for Lily Depp, and she's fucking terrible.
Unfortunately there are people who can't stand her/find her annoying, so there's also that.

Fantasy March: Omnibus
Tumblr media
As I prepare for the future of this blog (and there is a future, if anybody's wondering), I find myself looking back at the good times, when I had the time to watch a movie a day and write a blog about it, which...yeah, wasn't even sustainable for me in 2021, so make of that what you will. ANYWAY, I decided that I would bring all of these posts together in an omnibus of sorts, so anybody that wanted to read these posts could find them all easily in one place. This, alongside other archives, are going to be pinned to the top of my page, and will serve as a long index of the films in the appropriate genres. The goal? To extend these archives as I go along, and have this running index for my blog. And again...there will be additions...
SO! With that, feel free to check out these films in the fantasy genre, which is another one of those overlap-prone genres, but with a very distinct vibe to them. The definition of the fantasy genre, for the sake of this blog, is any film where the plot is forwarded or the universe is built upon supernatural phenomena that cannot be explained by scientific means. That includes science fiction means, so no Star Wars, and no superhero films, but possibly some science fantasy. Any films you'd like to see in this list? Comment, reblog, message me, whatever! I'm always open to suggestions to add to my ever-building master list of fantasy films. And check out the other indices to come!

Mississippi River
Sunday, April 7, 2024
Dora and Tim have a great time playing in the wet morning grass outside the Paducah Cracker Barrel. There are smells beneath every shrub. Then we load up and head out toward Missouri.
As we get closer to the Mississippi River we see more levees, including this bridge that looked like the steel overhead could be lowered to protect the town.
Tumblr media
We drove through Cairo (pronounced Karo like the syrup) at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. It is the only town protected by levees on all four sides.
It was depressing to see what the change to overland trucking has wrought to what used to be a prosperous river city. The town was full of disintegrating abandoned homes, factories, and businesses.
We cross the Ohio River into Illinois and parallel the Mississippi through very rural roads. Much more interesting than the interstates.
We finally cross the Mississippi River into Missouri at Cape Girardeau ("jir-AR-doh"). Beautiful bridge into a much larger city than Jeanne expected. According to the city website, they had 15,000 visitors for the 2017 eclipse and are expecting 20,000 this year.
Tumblr media
Compared to the two other eclipses we have seen, they don’t seem prepared. There are no signs for places to camp or park.
To our horror, we have no cell service. It must be all the visitors saturating the cell towers. We can’t look up information or addresses with any reliability. Phone calls don’t go through. Text messages are hit or miss.
We stop at the local sports field where there are a number of youth games on the multiple fields. We look for an official to ask where RV parking is. Two friendly Parks & Rec men say they don’t know, we can’t stay here and here’s the name of a good BBQ place.
After they leave, a Black woman named Bertha comes over and tells us that we can camp at a vacant lot near her house, and that we should also try the casino. The casino was on our list of places to try, so we thanked her and went there.
Did I mention that it was raining again? This is so depressing for eclipse watching. It’s less than 24 hours to totality and the weather is miserable.
To our surprise, the casino was not charging for overnight parking. They were very gracious and friendly. We had a Zoom call at 3:30, so we went into the casino to mooch wifi.
The casino had a spot set up to take selfies, so we took advantage. The manager helpfully took it for us. Notice the raincoats.
Tumblr media
The casino had a display of a DeLorean sports car. To our surprise, someone got in and drove it out the revolving door. It barely fit, so they were very careful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We went back to the casino every couple hours to check the weather. Not good. We make plans to leave in the morning, but where?
Tim’s brother Andy arrives and parks next to us in the parking lot. Andy says he has been ODing on cloud coverage sites. Us, too. If you ever want a list, we have a half-dozen bookmarked, and Andy even has more.
We have dinner together on in our RV and make more plans. Bertha stopped by to make sure we were ok. Amazingly considerate.
Tumblr media
The Mississippi is close so we take Dora for a long walk on and around the levees. This is the same bridge from the shore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We watch barges and their tugboats.
Tumblr media
We speculate on the sign on the bridge and then zoom in to see that it marks the clearance under the bridge.
Tumblr media
The sky is stormy-looking, but not actively raining. We decide to check the forecasts in the casino in the morning (still no cell service) and decide then.

2025 Shadow of God
Directed by Michael Peterson Written by Tim Cairo Stars Mark O’Brien, Jacqueline Byers, Shaun Johnson Run Time: 1 Hour, 27 Minutes Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS_GzNfngAg Spoiler-Free Judgment Zone This is very well made. Its an exorcism kind of movie, but not a ho-hum one. There are some differences that make it unique and interesting. We both liked it quite a bit, Kevin more…
