the episode of heartslabyul — the contradiction of cater diamond
The Episode of Heartslabyul chapter 21 scanlations is credited to Octopotscans!
The comparison shot comes from turtlesoupscans!
Tumblr media
Maybe it’s just me, but the manga adaptation does a great job of demonstrating how alone Cater is without explicitly drawing attention to it. A lot of the lines characters speak are directly carried over from the game, but the use of space and framing in various panels helps to convey a sense of emptiness. It’s purely visual storytelling, done and implying more without spelling it out with words.
Chapter 21 covers the period following Riddle’s Overblot; there’s lots of emphasis on reconciliation between the dorm leader and other characters: Riddle and Trey; Riddle and Yuuken, Riddle and Ace, etc. Then you also have interactions between Ace, Deuce, Yuuken, and Grim—just some good ol’ bickering between the main group of idiots 😂
For context, Cater suggests that Trey and the headmaster see Riddle to the infirmary (which explains their absence in the pages below). Then Cater says to himself that he’s thankful that Yuuken and co. stepped in to save their dorm leader, but is quick to deny that he said anything at all when asked about it. This also happens in the game, BUT LOOK AT HOW THAT SAME SCENE IS CONVEYED IN THE MANGA 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The “camera” pulls out to show the distance between Cater and the gang, which is actually a lot more than I thought it was when I saw the scene in the game. This distance shows us that he doesn’t feel like a part of their “group”, and neither does he feel like a part of the group that took Riddle to the infirmary earlier.
Trey and Riddle have the connection of being childhood friends, and Yuu is closer with Grim and Adeuce than they are to Cater. And yet, curiously, it was Cater himself who told Trey to go with Riddle rather than stay behind and help him clean up the aftermath of the OB attack. But despite staying behind with Yuuken and co., Cater doesn’t seem to make an effort to join in their banter when Grim eats the OB stone. Cater makes one passing comment, but for the most part he just… watches. He doesn’t get actively involved with the group, unlike Ace and Deuce who continue to loudly freak out over Grim putting things in his mouth.
Not only that, but look at how we, the audience, are seeing Cater—from the back, his face away from us, not unlike this pose from chapter 7 (after Cater throws Yuuken and co. out using his clones):
Tumblr media
Cater’s dispersed of all his clones, turning them into a storm of playing cards. He stands alone in a garden of roses, having sent the freshmen out of Heartslabyul. Here, Cater is literally pushing people away for the purposes of the plot, but it still lines up thematically with metaphorically distancing himself from others, just as he mimics this pose in chapter 21.
Interestingly, Cater apologizes to Yuuken and co. before ejecting them. It’s nothing personal, it’s just the rules set by the dorm. Extrapolating this to chapter 21, Cater pushing everyone away from him isn’t personal or specifically discriminatory to Yuuken/Ace/Deuce/Grim either—it is Cater that is having trouble accepting others into his life, because he has yet to come to terms with himself.
What’s a little different between Cater in 7 vs 21 is that though we, the readers, are viewing Cater from the back both times, the other characters actually see him differently in 7 vs 21. In the former, the “camera” seems to imply that Cater’s back it TO Yuuken, Ace, and Deuce. He is dismissing them, telling them “bye-bye”. Cater is acting much colder towards them, even though he wears a smile as he’s banishing them from his sight. However, in chapter 21, Cater is FACING the freshmen. It’s a small but subtle difference in framing—and it indicates that, no matter how little of an improvement it may be, Cater is slowly warming up to them.
This is the contradiction of Cater Diamond, a tale told to us via visual storytelling: he wants to have deep and meaningful friendships, but stops short of putting forth the effort to obtain them. Cater mentions wishing he had a childhood friend like Trey on a few occasions. Cater implies how lonely he was as a child, never staying in one place for long enough to make any real connections. Yet Cater is seemingly ashamed of his loneliness, hiding it under a sparkly guise and clever acting. He denies his true self to his peers (Labwear vignettes) and letting embarrassment peek through when people are able to pick up on his lies (ie Trey pointing out Cater doesn’t like sweets). He won’t let himself be vulnerable to others, and he’s too scared to reach out to them himself—but surely he is capable of changing, of finally facing others.
It’s amazing that things like this are capable of being conveyed without words 😭

Tangentially related to some of the discussion i posted earlier but quiet literally the first RW Art Month i participated I did it completely on whim like, one day before it started. And I mostly did it because I hadn't drawn a ton of rain world and wanted to draw more. Fandom presence was a lot smaller than and I was one of a handful of artists who did the entire thing. Fast forward and I still do Art Month and I've gotten to work with VC directly. But it was quite literally something I decided to do completely on whim that set the ball rolling, and for something a lil more niche and certainly with a lot more dev/fandom art involvement than most. It's really random how and why you might get noticed more than usual, especially with the "toss it into the search and hope it pays out' mechanism of Socmed
#t.extpost#and im hardly the fanciest art month artist out there so it wasnt even about being a jaw droppingly talented artist or whatever#and while artmonth for rw is still given a huge focus its also a much much bigger thing now with a much bigger number of participants#which is cool! its awesome how many people i saw do most if not all of last art month! and VC is really good about not just repping the#most popular artists or fanciest pieces#but theres So Much More there now and while its great for finding artists its also impossible to get Everyone in there you know?#Although they absolutely try#And this is like. one of the most fanartist involved devs ive ever seen in terms of both celebrating the art their fans make and actively#bringing those fans in to contribute#and its /still/ hard to get going just because thats how Posting is#i used to be more of a hk artist which is both a huge fandom and riddled with stunning artists but theres So Many#and niche fandoms are niche so youre more likely to connect with people but less likely to see a ton of engagement regularly -#probably best example i have for that was being briefly fixated on patapon.#Its just messy to try and find the hack that sets you up#just have fun and jump around and make what you like#get a sense of feeling for your style and some people will stick around for that vs. strictly the subject matter#others will look up the thing you switched too and some wont engage#you cant really control it#so have fun and draw that thing you randomly thought about at 2 am that doesnt match your blog#draw for that forgotten rpg you liked when you were 15 or draw for the 70 player max steam game you played for this week#you never really know what will happen#but its not really worth worrying about what will happen either

You Seriously Need to Calm Down
Notes: based on this first Cherry's Harvesting request where Anon asked for Trey, Jack, Jamil and Sebek taking care of a stubborn sick s/o who insists they're fine (but they aren't). I only did Jack, Jamil and Sebek for that one since Trey was already requested in other things at that time. I left a little hc in the notes there that I managed to use here too~
Trey Clover x sick g!n reader / very implied crush / fluff / use of "you" pronouns / Bit's of Cherry concept / Masterlist
Tumblr media
Sometimes we get too used to certain things. That’s what Trey thought when he found it odd that only Ace and Deuce had returned to Heartslabyul in the afternoon, without the company of the little troublemaker Grim and, especially, without you by their side. When he questioned the boys, they commented that they were also worried and didn’t saw you in class;
Before Deuce could even express that maybe they should go to the Ramshackle to check on you, Trey had already taken this mission for himself and got out of the kitchen as quickly as possible — Ace didn’t notice that the senior also had left the apron in his own hands. Trey didn’t quite know what awaited him in your dorm but, as he opened the door, he heard the ghost talking with you worriedly;
Grim held your leg and the ghosts insisted that you should stay in bed. Trey’s gaze fastly fell on your slow, exhausted figure, carefully gripping the stair railing with each lethargic step. He instantly understood what was happening. “Honestly...,” Trey laughed as he approached you. “...you think you can play that card on me?”;
You only understood what Trey meant after you felt your pressure drop. Your consciousness only awoke again in bed, with you being warmly wrapped up and with a cold towel on your head. Trey was muttering softly as he covered some cracks in your room’s window and wall so as not to get the ambient so cold;
Trey knew exactly what it was like to not want to look sick because he often did the same thing. Denying that you were in need of help or that you needed rest — and in that, putting all your obligations on hold — was a feeling you both shared more than you could have hoped for yourself. Trey led you into relaxation that way, “boring” you with his past stories and his honey-like, calm voice;
Every time you woke up, however, there was a feeling of extreme frustration mixed with body fatigue and high temperature. Trey was managing to put you to rest against your will — successfully! Worse: he left prepared in advance several things that you would need and he managed balanced Heartslabyul and Ramshackle in his chores in an impressive way;
Near your bed, several bottles of water and a medicine box with a note of instructions were arranged. The kitchen’s refrigerator was well reinforced with several ingredients for Trey to prepare several warm and delicious soups for you to consume;
Once you were forced to wonder — a bit sulkily, by the way — whether Trey was treating you like another of the troublemaker boys from his dorm or one of his little siblings. He ended up laughing at your words but just straightened your pillow in response;
One thing was certain: Trey always found a way to show up when you woke up and tried to get up to tidy up the room. You insisted that you didn’t want to be a bother at all, yet any action against him was in vain. Trey would take you on his arms — partly to stop you with the surprise of his action — and you would be promptly returned to bed;
“I know you don't want to look weak, especially at times like this. But, really, sometimes we need to be taken care of and not worry about things,” Trey said while straightening your bed hair. His gaze was deep, staring directly at your soul as if he saw his own reflection in a cup of tea. In this, he had an idea;
A few minutes later, Trey came back with some tea for you. He served it on the small platter with support that he used to put on your soup plates, but you noticed that it had two cups this time. “To your health!,” Trey toasted, smiling. You sipped your tea in silence, contemplating the fact that he was being more than supportive and compassionate to you. Trey understood you. Maybe more than that, actually. There was something special about Trey’s sweetness in taking care of you that he sure didn’t have with anyone else.

Is byler going to sit in the back seat again before they realize and accept their feelings? most likely.
Is byler gonna get murray'd before they realize and accept their feelings? most likely.
And so i am offering a two for one
Imagine!
Murray doesn't actually want to confront byler. At least not blatantly.
He learned in Jancy and Jopper's case, that if he confronts them, Will and Mike are just going to give the same tired speech about how they are, 'just friends'.
We’ve already heard that speech from them (Mike) in s4, and so it would be sort of redundant to outright repeat it.
But bc life is funny, as Murray is surfing through the radio channels in the car with byler sitting in the backseat, he just can't seem to escape love songs, skipping one after another like, "Huh. Thats weird? Thats--"
And I'm talking like indisputable love songs:
Just the Two of Us.
Alone.
Hungry Eyes.
Open Arms.
Is This Love
When FINALLY Murray gets to a station playing a ‘platonic’ song:
Friends Will Be Friends. By Queen.
Except, while that song is widely recognized as a platonic bop, in the context of byler... it's just, definitely not.
And Murray would be soaking it up, feigning obliviousness.
This whole time Mike and Will have just been sitting awkwardly in the backseat, avoiding eye contact (while simultaneously trying to sneak glances at each other).
And the scene then ends with Murray dramatically belting out the lyrics.
FRIENDS WILL BE FRIENDS !
RIGHT TILL THE END !

Beginning to See the Light
@greens-your-color What happens when Darius takes Severus into Society the first time. (No biting, although I think Lucius wanted to chomp on someone for both of them.)
“…heard you’re allowin’ your boy to racket about with the Potter set.”
Severus heard the adenoidal tones that meant Gwendolyn Whitlow found another victim. He drew back slightly, letting the curtain of his alcove shield him. Old habits died hard, he supposed, but listened in anyway. One never knew what one might learn.
“Oh, yes. Family, you know.” Lucius answered coolly.
“Isn’t one of the girls not magically born?” She made that sound like a communicable disease.
“Miss Whitlow, I know you, tragically, have yet to enter the beautiful precepts of parenthood, but when one’s only son is determined to do the right thing by his…relative, then one simply must support him in that endeavor. The Granger girl is more palatable that I imagined.”
Severus could see, in his mind’s eye, Lucius’ expression given the chilly tone. He’d bet a month’s salary Lucius had his monocle out. Or perhaps he twitched a fan at her. The monocle, Severus decided, was more likely. Lucius’ liked people to feel as if they were being examined and found wanting.
“Don’t you worry at all about low company?”
“Quite frankly, Miss Whitlow, Draco’s manners and marks both have done nothing but improve since he took up with Potter, not that it is any of your business. I think, perhaps, it’s time to repair your own ignorance on the subject of the non-magical world.”
Miss Whitlow sputtered something at that. Severus swallowed hard. Low company. He’d been that, once. The little urchin graciously taken in hand by Lucius Malfoy and Narcissa Black. Eileen’s boy, so tragic she’d gone and married that muggle.
He didn’t belong here. He’d never belonged in this glittering world of balls and routs and card parties and boxes at the opera. His world was chalk dust and bubbling cauldrons and sticky children managing to have the most ridiculous accidents possible in class.
“Right, my lad, that’s quite enough of that.”
Severus startled as his husband suddenly loomed up at his side.
“I…Dare…I’m…” he floundered at seeing the stern set of Dare’s jaw.
“Hiding behind a curtain and thinking you could never belong here?” Dare raised an eyebrow.
How did the bloody man know that?
“Oh, Severus. Do you think I never had those moments myself?”
That put a different complexion on it.
“Come with me, pet. We’re going to plead a headache. You look peaky enough.” The wry twist of his mouth took the sting out of that one.
In short order, Severus found himself standing on the pavement waiting for their carriage. Dare wrapped an arm about his shoulders.
“Why don’t we try somewhere more to our taste?” Dare asked.
Severus looked up at him, the misery of ruining their first evening out together in Society dissipating with his surprise.
“Where?” he asked.
“Will you trust me?”
Severus felt his heart melt at that and tried to keep from smiling soppily. “Of course I trust you.”
“Then hold on. I sent the carriage back.”
Severus tucked himself close, closer than one really needed for side-along apparition, and closed his eyes. One squeezing moment later, he felt their feet hit pavement again.
“We’ll have to put your hair up, if you don’t mind, but the rest should be right.” Dare held up a clip and Severus turned around.
His husband’s hands were gentle as he carefully combed his fingers through Severus’ long hair. He plaited it quickly and clubbed the heavy length of it up at the nape of Severus’ neck with the clip. Severus looked at the brigtly lit façade before then and choked on air.
“A dance hall? Dare, if someone sees…”
“No one here will utter even one peep about us. They knew my father.”
How he said that and kept a perfectly innocent expression Severus would never know. He snorted.
“He used to dance here?” he finally choked out.
“Apparently,” Dare bit his lip. “That would have been in the forties. He used to bring his Slytherin cronies with him, slumming it.”
“The imagination boggles,” Severus murmured.
“Come along,” Dare grinned, anticipation lighting his eyes. “I’ve been watching you in set dances all evening. I cannot believe Mrs. Sedgwick thinks waltzing immoral, even now.”
Severus let Dare lead him in, suddenly happy he’d worn the flame-colored evening pajamas Narcissa and the tailor insisted he required for less formal events. The flowing trouser legs gave him some comfort—Dare seemed like the sort who danced energetically.
Who would ever have thought that Tobias Snape deciding that the best way to tire out energetic magical children was to teach them both swing and jive would come in handy? He could hear his mother even now, leaning out the kitchen window over the cramped back garden and laughing:
“Toby, why is Severus learning all the lifts?Surely that would be for Lily?”
“Nay, ‘leen. The lass’ll be taller than our Severus in weeks! Growing like a weed, that one.”
So Severus learned how to be lifted and all the aerials. Did Dare know any of them? He supposed he’d find out. They secured a table around the edge of the dance floor after checking their cloaks. Dare marked it as engaged and led Severus out to the floor.
Severus let him swing them into the flow of dancers, following his lead in a slow fox trot.
“Can you keep up?” Dare grinned down at him.
“With this?” Severus raised an eyebrow.
“This is just a warm up, my lad.” Dare stole a quick, smacking kiss.
It was. The more decorous fox trots and waltzes slowly trailed off into Stompin’ at the Savoy and One O’Clock Jump. Severus matched steps with Dare, following his lead easily. Several numbers he didn’t recognize passed as he and Dare familiarized themselves with each other.
He’d forgotten the joy of it, giving over to the music, the bass thumping in his blood up and down the scale as the band kicked the tempo faster and faster. He’d never felt like this dancing with Lily—so wholly in sync.
He realized that many of the other dancers had cleared off the floor, leaving more space for the jitterbugs. Dare laughed down at him, and swung him out, his hair falling over his forehead.
“Can you do the aerials?” he shouted over the pounding drums.
“All of them,” Severus bellowed back. “My father said it was my patriotic duty so I could show up the Yanks and scandalize the Malfoys!”
Dare snorted and steered them to an emptier section of the dance floor.
“Want a go?”
“Yes!”
He hadn’t trusted Lily’s muscle strength enough to try anything like a candlestick or an around the world with her. They’d confined themselves to some of the tamer pops and throws. He might regret it in the morning, but he couldn’t resist Dare’s infectious enthusiasm.
Frankie flips, around the worlds, k flips, tick tocks, and coffee grinders followed in quick succession. Severus knew they were drawing a crowd, but he didn’t care. He matched Dare step for step.
“See now, Davey, I told you that were Tommy’s boy. No one else danced like that.”
Severus caught Dare’s eye and laughed in delight as Dare supported him into a candlestick.

Ghost Adoption - Ghost Marriage but twisted with Beta! Idia?!
[Based on Yana’s tweet of how Idia was originally supposed to be a child prodigy who skipped grades]
So what if instead of Eliza being a princess looking for true love, she was a queen whose son was missing before she died? Perhaps over the years, she was still struck with grief. She saw Idia, and convinced that must be her long lost son because of his ghostly appearance.
The rest of the NRC gang reluctantly agree to rescue Idia because no matter how bratty he could be, he was still a child. (This is assuming Ortho isn’t with Beta! Idia??)
Instead of the tallest boys going up to Eliza, it’s the shortest boys that go first! They try to appeal to Eliza by acting cute and childish, to try to convince her that they are her real son. When the plan to send in the shortest/most childish boys fail, they try a different tactic to trick Eliza by using the excuse of her son growing up and maturing without her. Eliza still clings to Idia, because she’s more attached to the memories and idea of her younger son, than the relevancy of age and logic.
How would the event end? It is later revealed one of the ghosts is Eliza’s true missing son, after he realizes how much Eliza mourned for him and felt guilty.
Ghost Marriage cast gets switched up!
Riddle got booted for being extremely stiff and has difficulties appeasing Eliza; he doesn’t know how to respond to Eliza’s test of affection, since he never received much love from his own mother.
Epel got booted right off the bat. He lost his shit when Eliza said, “I lost a son, not a daughter! Is this a joke?”
Ace got booted because when Eliza tested him on his “memories with her”, he answered incorrectly.
Rook got booted for being too sentimental. Eliza would probably say something along the lines of “If you longed for your mother so much, then why did you never come back?”

I've been having a really rough time these past couple months with health issues and stress constantly piling onto health issues and stress, but all of a sudden it feels as if the universe itself has decided "it's almost their birthday, let's throw this guy a bone" and now there are so many things to be happy about.
