Oh, Kate, Kate, Kate...maybe if David Geffen, Barry Diller, Ryan Seacrest, and their bosses, the Rothchilds, the CIA and the WEF, hadn't filled the Hollywood' ranks with boy toys, women who hate men, and pretty much banned heterosexual love stories, we might get cheesy rom coms back.

There's always more...

I’ve been having some Thoughts™️ about the weird meta paradox of gerri kellman’s sexuality. as basically The Older Woman on the executive floor she’s trying as much as is possible to blend in with her male colleagues while also not being perceived to be doing so. muted colours and understated makeup. a competent filing cabinet. her husband is dead and her daughters are nameless. she was sexual once but that’s out of sight out of mind and now it’s just the work. it must be a relief in some ways to become finally unfuckable because you’re over 40. she can finally be taken seriously, but only if she toes the line between being too female and not female enough. trying but not too hard. desirable in the past tense only. an honorary man but still in a skirt. and while the men around her can fuck their much younger assistants and get sports massages and run a sex trafficking ring on a cruise ship, she is the job and only the job and that keeps her safe. for a bit anyway.
the irony of gerri saving the company from the full legal extent of a sex scandal by dating someone from the DOJ??? like i’ll never be over it. even filing cabinets have to flatter and please and fuck when called upon. i genuinely don’t believe any of the other execs could have swung it because they’re not women. she dated laurie (generally unseen unless framed from another man’s possessive perspective) to save the men from going to jail for covering up rape allegations. the irony is delicious. and even though she did that, she’s discarded once she’s framed sexually. Dick Pic Gate was out of her control and yet when confronted with any element of gerri’s sexuality (even her PASSIVE sexuality, even after using it to save his company), logan dismisses her as weak or impractical or failing or whatever other excuse he uses to justify his disgust.
i would argue that roman’s interest in gerri is not in spite of but BECAUSE of her asexual framing. it’s a challenge that he’s never going to win which is ideal for his impotency issues; he can push and push and get the thrill out of it, out of the fucked up power dynamic, but he knows he’ll never have to actually fuck her. it’s all hypothetical: down a phone, through a door, half-joking, covered in sensible skirt suits. gerri’s deliberate lack of sexualizing is counterintuitively a turn-on for roman. and i bet the game of chicken they play is freeing for her too because the fact that she has to be professional and cannot be sensual is part of the fun of it. “roman is weird about gerri”. “it’s fucking disgusting”. not because of their family history, or their professional positions, but because she’s old. because the absence of her sexuality is enough of a presence to be off-putting. shiv patronising her about it as a power play is so weird because she’s talking to her simultaneously like a child and like an old woman, and gerri, agency-less, just has to keep reassuring her “i can cope”.
BUT it’s worse than that because it’s so meta. Because gerri is hot. her actor is attractive and like roman, many people watching find her sexless, no-nonsense framing to be titillating. me included. what if roman likes gerri not because of oedipal issues but just because she’s hot and god forbid we find a woman over 50 hot? but whether or not gerri is hot in the context of the show shouldn’t be a big deal, she should have been able to escape this by now!!! she’s in her 60s she’s a widow she’s tired stop sexualizing her!!! but don’t NOT sexualize her either because that’s problematic too and old women can be hot and old women shouldn’t have to be hot and suddenly i’m making gerri do what waystar does and exist as something sexual and non-sexual at the same time. she has a huge plotline in which she’s essentially a sex object. whether or not gerri is fuckable is talked about as much in the show with mildly-disgusted fascination as it is in the real world!!! she can’t win she’s hot she’s old she’s sexually framed she’s deliberately trying not to be she wants sex she doesn’t want sex she’s covering sex with sex and she’s telling roman to leave her alone so she can just do her damn job because she knows that this is what will bring her down!!! sex scandals historically don’t get men fired but an unsolicited dick pic knocks gerri off her podium in logan’s head forever. even now i’m talking about it at such length because i’ve given it so much thought!!! she’s the only woman in the old guard and she’s one of the most sexualized characters in succession. but only as a joke. in the abstract. never actually. because that would be weird. right?

It feels less like you want to address a real life problem to characters, but more like you want to have another of your characters you constantly baby and want others to fangirl over.
TW: Rape, SA, Racism, Stereotyping, Homophobia, Acephobia, Arophobia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The representations of topics in media DOES affect real people.
Fiction can affect reality.
Let's start easy, Jaws. This goes back to Hazbin I promise.
"Since the release of Jaws in 1975, the world has witnessed a staggering decline of 71% in shark and ray populations, and around 100 million sharks are killed each year." (including multiple practices of mass hunting sharks in competition)
Both Steven Spielberg and the original writer Peter Benchley regret the movie and book. It's a big reason of the shark treatment, when it started by old fishermen worrying about shark biting people in the beaches they made money of.
Even if you aren't a shark killer yourself, a lot of things you believe of sharks are untrue myths that come from making sharks "evil" human killer animals. Sharks cannot smell blood from miles away, that's not even how water works, the particles of blood need to enter their nostrils. Sharks are not man eaters, they attack other prey animals before human. Shark attacks are extremely rare, even if they happen they are not justifiable to kill all sharks.
Tumblr media
Sharks actually have personalities they can fit in, they are smart and recognize people and boats- and form positive relationships with people. They can even like getting pet by people.
youtube
youtube
Other level to represent other thing sin media that affects reality we can address Queer, representation as a topic.
I hope it is not a surprise for you... possible non-straight, non-cis person reading this. That the constant representation of gay man as kid predator is a problem. They used old commercial (PSA) to spread negative views of gay man. Media is used to spread messages and affect its viewer. This is, there are cartoons created by Jehovah witness (or similar religions) to spread their beliefs and teach to their children in an easy, digestible way.
Same with the amount of straight woman that went off to read shitty yaoi manga and fetishy gay wattpad stories, and went to sexualize and diminish queer men. Constantly making gay man's personality into bottom or top (uke and seme shit). I witness this irl, others have too.
Same with shitty men that view Lesbians as a porn machine for men, cause "monkey brain like woman, lesbian = two women". Which happens in general and adult media. All of these are EASY examples.
Another one which turns out many people don't think about. Having your representation of an AroAce character (on purpose or not) be the psychopath with no feelings. Associating the not being romantically or sexually to means you have no heart, to be abnormal, by then a psychopath. An abuse or serial killer.
Fiction does affect reality-
A racist film, 'Birth of the nation' Revived the KKK and let to all the discrimination, and the homicide of black people of centuries ahead.

Coming back around, how you treat the topic of SA, and r-pe- affects the real world. You would think someone who wrote that, had in mind on how that affects people in real life. Didn't you want to represent victims of SA/R-pe that are sex workers and male?
Reducing the r-pist, pimp, trafficker character to an air head to treat as silly is crazy to do. Specially as... oh idk... the creator? Both this and the tweet of the voice actor calling Val "Bubbles Coded" is so crazy. The character is also not deep enough by itself, it's pretty much Stupid and a R-pist sex trafficker. The tweet below Viv's fucking kills me too.
The fact Val is shown to be air head stupid doesn't delete he backed Angel (and by being a sex trafficker and a pimp, and him licking charlie that means he has multiple victims) into a corner and under his control. Too then abuse of him in many different ways. Manipulations are not only done by Super mastermind people, and representing it in such way diminished, affects people who have being manipulated and actually try to question if they have being or not. Manipulators can be normal, average people, they usually are not obvious. Even if Val is openly a shitty person that's really obvious, it doesn't detract from him being manipulative to people. The scene where Val threatens him in chains that is manipulation, his text messages are manipulation (even if you think it is too obvious to be successful).
Tumblr media
How you represent SA/R-PE, and its perpetrators, do affect real life.
Going around and having your "serious R-pe episode", to then go in other episodes or the other series you are writing to make r-pe/sa jokes is terrible. For the person that directed the whole scene of poison to NOT be r-pe/sa victim (said by themselves) with a r-pe fetish with this character's in specific, to directed in the most graphic way possible is awful. To go around babying your r-pist character is crazy.
youtube
Hope you understand that this doesn't mean not treating any topic at all. Creators should be awere on how they treat topics and the scenarios they create with them, too. People and viewers need to also put their brain to understand the media they consume. But you can't always put all blame only on the viewers of a series, if media is messy is a fault of the media. You can criticize both.
You need to acknowledge Valentino is indeed a terrible person, You don't need to delete his actions or the weight of them.
I also just know that a lot of Val fans just like him to draw him in r-pe art and get their fetishized gay ship. Cause that's what they are into. You won't even do that with a woman, because you are into your fucked up fetishized gay porn from wattpad you never left behind.
If you like him, FUCK IT, just please take his abuse seriously. Don't default your entire usage, and view of the character to be 'uwufied' fandom stuff, please.
I hate how the topic has being treated, in and out of the show. I'm a victim, and I'm hurt by how these things are treated and knowing how it affects others. Even in things I haven't watched! Don't make the argument don't like it? Just don't watch it. The movies from the video of SA of men being a joke, many I haven't watch- that still affects over all. It's still a problem and it's disheartening.
Also have this:

Note
You have to love the hypocrisy of the show acting as though being a pimp is so much better than being a slave owner; like it isn't still human trafficking, and as though in that time and place, black women wouldn't have suffered the most from it. It's a seriously disgusting thing to pretend that it's this cutesy, morally fine thing to do: if they're fine with Louis being a sex trader, than they should have been fine with portraying the actual story of the books - he's meant to be a passively bad person. The story is about evil deserving empathy. It would be different if they used the fact that he's a pimp to explore the fact that he's always profited off of human lives and was passively evil in life, that would have been different (though that's exactly what the books do, so it still would have worked with the original story and then the show might have been good), but it was used as a way to make Louis a morally fine uwu baby. I fucking hate it. It's disgusting for the show runners to pretend sex trading is okay and doesn't harm people, it's dishonest to pretend the show is a discussion about the legacy of race in America without actually discussing the way in which black women suffered as a result of misogynoir and how they were sexualised and their sexual exploitation was ignored (but we all know how the show feels about black women given what they did to Claudia), and it's ridiculous to pretend that it's a gothic story when it veers away from the moral complexities inherent to the gothic genre. It's a poorly written, malicious, badly developed show with subpar actors, and I hate how popular it's become. It feel as though it's defiling the legacy of the books. And apparently Marius is a pimp now too. I hate even engaging with it, but I had to vent. I hope it gets cancelled as soon as possible and the fan base dies down, in the meantime, I'll try to enjoy the books and the circle of book fabs that remain here. Of which your blog is a wonderful example. Love to you, hate to AMC.
I absolutely agree with every single word lol. As a woman and as a iwtv fan i am disgusted by the treatment of women in this show, but apparently the show writers and the majority of audience don't care about women representation, neither black nor white. Also the fact that they portrayed the sex workers (in the few scenes where they appear) as 'relaxed' women that seem to have a friendly attitude towards Louis (who in this show possesses a strong ambition for business) is weird and gives to the viewer a distorted view of reality. The narrative focused a lot on the issue of racism, so why not showing briefly the suffering of black prostitutes? Because the male gaze doesn't want to recognize it? I don't know. And don't get me started on the other female characters.
What happened to Claudia was completely avoidable and unnecessary and still rj opted for this version and said that the r4pe was 'a horrible thing that happened to her, but it has toughened her up'. I guess it is a self-explanatory sentence. I can't even imagine how SA victims felt while hearing him say it. It completely downplays the trauma of SA and implies that women get something positive out of it. I felt that episode and the scene in one of the first episodes where Louis burns the tapes of the '70 interview (the book….) were disgustingly disrespectful towards Anne Rice and her fans.
Last year I got into a heated argument with some show fans on twitter because they kept reiterating that 'at least prostitution gives more freedom to women/people than slavery', 'louis is a good pimp, he treats his girls with respect', 'he defends the prostitutes from cruel men' , 'at least he didn't enslave my ancestors unlike book louis', it was annoying and i was astonished of reading all their statements, very misogynistic.
Regarding pimp Louis: not only this is a way to avoid probing into the character's psyche/moral (and not include one of the most important themes of the novel), but it is a way of de responsabilize (and deny) the past. Louis is a man of his time and, with an accurate work of writing, it would have made sense to contestualize his privileged position and explain what it meant for him to be in charge of a plantation, it would have been interesting to show what it meant to be a landowner and slave owner at the time and the consequences of his actions reflected on his slaves, maybe introducing some of them into the narrative in a more concrete way (or do the same with the pimp/brothel storyline in the show, because it's equally evil), since it is a topic basically not explored in the book. But the showrunner decided that nowadays one should not represent these issues on tv and you have to disregard the past. It is extremely hypocritical.
And it's awful that for this reason they chose another historical setting, changing century and not addressing the fact that there were just as many issues in 1910/20 as well; apparently for the writers the XX century was a historical period with minor social problems where no difficulties existed (aside from racism, it was pretty much the most prominent theme in s1). And I doubt that the reconstruction of the New Orleans society of the time is faithful lol (and where is the voodoo?). All this imo denotes great laziness in the writing.
And clearly this series does not belong to the gothic genre, it's more a teen drama. Beyond the surface level thrills, the gothic literature holds a profound mirror to the complexities of human psychology that here are totally absent. I also doubt that the show writers did extensive research on the figure of the vampire in literature.
We were all eagerly waiting for the cancellation of this garbage that is NOT iwtv/tvc and the immediate disappearance of the show fandom ahahah but unfortunately it has been renewed for s3 😔
Thank you for the compliments mwah! hugs!

I’ve put this other places, but basically-even if no woman was hurt in pornography, even if no woman was trafficked into pornography against their will getting off to porn would still be gross as fuck.
But usually when I talk about why I was turned off from pornography as a child it has very little to do with the reality that woman are brutalized in it’s creation but the very nature of it as a commercial sex transaction. What is the point of sex if not to authentically bond with another person? Why is sexual desire divorced from just, desiring another person? I could, and still can’t, wrap my head around women as meat, women as objects, women as things to use. What’s the point of that? Where is the gratification if not in the pleasure of your partner? Even temporarily. Why fuck someone you know doesn’t want it? Where is the enjoyment out of causing someone harm?
It bothers me that “normal men” “good men” “feminist men” can cross that line of consent so easily and they can go about their lives and interact with women as friends, mentors, lovers, daughters.
To enjoy viewing pornography knowing that the actress (and sometimes the actor) in the “film” are doing this for money and continue to view it….it is morally wrong. It is a form of sexual assault. It pollutes you mentally and emotionally as you learn to excuse harm done to the others in order to appease your animal instincts. People who watch porn are bad people, they are dangerous people. They are people who watch someone get raped and enjoy it and don’t trouble themselves to think about it further.
But why don’t we see it that way?
The male hatred for women really goes beyond our ability as women to fully understand I think. Like really, consider what would be pleasurable about fucking a corpse. Think about how you’d have to pry a woman’s limbs apart, how cold she would feel, how lifeless the experience would be and the entire time you would simply not think about, not care, or actively like that fact that you’re violating something sacred that you’re treating what was once a loved human being like an object. Or a woman asleep which is much in the same. The fact that men get off on the pleasure of knowing we might wake up. How can a woman enjoy it? Wouldn’t you want your partner to be happy? To love you? To feel pleasure because of your touch? What gain is it to you to know that women live in fear of your desire? How absolutely depraved is man to think that rape is love?
Men frighten me, not because I always believe they’re malicious in a deliberate way, but because they are capable of dehumanizing women so utterly, utterly completely that her horror is not even relevant to them. It’s just an inconvenance as trivial as not liking her “job”. It’s a joke, a dalliance. It’s not serious. Desecration is not sufficient to describe the ways in which male behavior violates the human spirit. How can they live with themselves. How can they live with the lie.

when you say porn is filming rape and trafficking what do you mean or where did you learn that? i almost got into the industry when i was dating a girl who was up & coming in the industry, but as i met more and more women i was startled by how many of us are survivors of childhood sexual abuse! and i am one too. the only time i’ve met that many survivors in one place is literally in support groups. there were also a couple instances i heard where women would say their consent was violated in some way with a popular male actor and not much happens, sometimes the male actor is dropped from that production company but then makes his own or moves to a different one. it isn’t always like that, i’ve met many women who said they enjoyed their job a lot and i did know women who were self sufficient away from professional porn, they would do pro shoots when they wanted (but didn’t necessarily need) more money. i think most of them would say they enjoyed what they do.
i’ve also met full service sex workers and all of them said they wanted to be able to stop doing that and hopefully get into porn instead. the two aren’t mutually exclusive though. when i asked “if you felt that you could do something else with your career, would you?” sometimes they seemed hesitant to answer, and sometimes they would say “nope, i like what i’m doing!” i think it would be offensive if i didn’t believe them so i did, i believed they had agency as women and i don’t want to patronize or infantilize them. but i was aware the choice to stay in the career is a choice made under patriarchy. i worried for my reputation because you can only do the job for so long, and i didn’t know many women 50+ or what they do after their career slows. i knew one over 40 who has her own production company.
all that was enough for me to steer myself away from porn. there’s something called The Whorearchy and what I wanted to do was be at the top where cam girls, only fans, and amateur self-owned productions were - and then sometimes choose to do professional porn with my girlfriend and a female producer. i knew many women who were happy doing it this way. still, i felt it really wasn’t worth it. i’d rather be poor now and wealthy in old age than the other way around.i was told saying they film rape and trafficking is a popular “swerf” talking point, and i’ve heard conservatives say it too. the statement conjures an image of women on drugs in dank and dirty rooms being told what to do by their pimps. the majority of the women in the porn industry i did know were seriously offended by people saying that, especially those in their amateur productions or doing cam work. however the truth was that they and i knew that once you were famous it would make it difficult to do anything else outside of adult industries. some would say we are all coerced to do work and the industry is abusive not because it’s sex work but because it’s under capitalism. i support decriminalization laws and destigmatization that make life harder for sex workers and increase violence against them.
so when you say that statement do you mean it’s because women can’t leave the industry without serious financial hardship so their consent is not full consent? i’m wondering if there is something i don’t already know.
thank you so much terra!
Yeah I mean porn and sex work as an industrial complex has a systemic structure in which women are tricked into accepting large sums of money, trips, vacations, gifts, drugs, etc on high profile "dates" and then told she will need to "work it off". Sometimes it's filmed, that's how the porn industry thrives now. it's become much easier via influencers and only fans to facilitate this kind of "glamour" trafficking and rape. It's not that they'll leave with a big debt, it's more that they'll make her murder look like a suicide.
Celebrities like prince, drake, diddy, have made money from these kinds of yachting trafficking rings for decades. My ex was in this lifestyle as a dominatrix and stripper before she became trans masc, has to change her name and identity and address every few years. it was all extremely traumatic. I have nothing against girls who stay in the industry but it is absolutely not "just a job".

I got peaked on gay men recently there was a post of women making harmless jokes about yaoi and GC gay men started saying femicide is the greatest thing ever invented and saying “and women wonder why they’ve been subjected, raped, tortured, and killed for all of human history” and I thought where is this energy for the gay porn industry harming real life gay men by giving them stds, trafficking them, and getting them addicted to drugs. I’ve never seen in all my years as a terf tehms or GC gay men ever criticize the gay porn industry despite all its harm. And I realized because they’re still watching porn probably insane amounts of it! Gay men are extremely violent misogynists and porn addicts just like any other type of man.
those kinds of comments are literally punch worthy...
gay men are generally totally porn addicted, and i was ready to accept those explanations like "it's because they grow up isolated and have no frame of reference for sex!" but tbh straight men are just as porn addicted so no that's not it. it's the male industry and male lack of empathy for it all.
at first i couldn't believe the blank stares i'd get when i'd mention mention that you know, even as "GC" gays, we should be quitting porn and responses like "but, how can you have such a problem with it, there's no exploitation of women?" but then i figured out the pornsickness is so bad that they cannot conceptualize porn as coercive and harmful to the people involved because that's usually their fantasy!! Porn actors are hot and lucky to be "working" such a "job", it's inconceivable to them that there might be such horrors behind it. To say nothing of detriments of porn on its users (which imho is of secondary but non-negligible importance), and also that those gay pornographers are often just a different department of the porn companies that DO exploit women.
so nowadays when i find myself in gay settings I make a big fuss about being disgusted by any porn talk bc it ruins the vibe completely. and so it should be

Males always avoid discussions around the gritty shit. Scary shit.
Men avoid discussions about women's trauma, women's pain, women's misery, and the emotional consequences of oppressing women.
Women are human beings. Women are people.
Violation of Bodily Autonomy
Men avoid discussions about trafficking, strip clubs, BDSM, brothels, pornography. Men avoid discussions about abduction and kidnapping. Men avoid discussions about women's shelters, and how a man in a dress is NOT a woman. Men avoid discussions about grooming culture.
Financial Trauma
Men avoid discussions about how many women have experienced verbal abuse, harassment, and violence at work. Men avoid discussions about how women are neglected in the workplace. Men avoid discussions about the taxation of menstrual hygiene products, and how women are socialized to fritter away their finances on clothing, cosmetics, underwear, and hair products. Men avoid discussions around how job titles are gendered. Men avoid discussions on how women are socialized to neither ask for a raise nor a promotion. Men avoid discussions about women and financial trauma. Men avoid discussions about female investors and female entrepreneurs. Men avoid discussions about how being marriage free and child free gives you a (MORE THAN FAIR) economic advantage. Men avoid discussions about how ageism affects women's earnings. Men avoid discussions about how women earning money in various MALE DOMINATED fields (women in STEM, women in coding, female record producers, female sound engineers, female actors, female documentarians, female politicians, women in medicine, women in law, women in sports, women in aviation, women in journalism, women in hospitality jobs, women in customer service, women in research, women in emergency services) are NOT HAPPY.
When talking about scary, gritty shit -- do not throw positivity in. Nothing about this can be sugarcoated. Do not make positivity posts.
Do not make posts being encouraging or telling women to feel empowered. Women have already seen positive empowerment posts many times; they make it worse. Empowerment posts and positivity posts are shit to distract people from realities of oppression.
Share statistics, documentaries, and research.
Women need food, women need water, women need money, women need tenancies, women need to pay their utility bills, women need raises and promotions, women need networks, women need representation, women need SLEEP, women need less shit work hours, women need to COMPLAIN, women need to talk about financial trauma and mental health, women need to dismantle the pay gap (and share research on INTERSECTIONALITY of the pay disparity). Women need to talk about job interviews and job interviewers. Women need to talk about job searching. Women need to talk about firings. Women need to talk about objectification of women's work uniforms (sexualized Halloween costumes). Women need to talk about how they are often trapped in the background of their workplace while their male coworkers have conversations with one another.

I’m not the anon who mentioned the slightly racist behavior but I am an anon who just saw on Twitter that the actor who plays RJ’s parents saw the hate and racist edits people have made regarding him. Replacing him with a picture of a goat. Removing him from pictures and only leaving Judith. Calling him names. Questioning if he’s Rick’s. Calling Judith the last grimes when she’s biologically not one at all. Nothing is ever explicitly racist it’s the under tones and motives for why you attack a person or pick them apart. And then swearing you never saw any of that happen. This is why when Carylers want to holler about ageism and sexism but lean into racism no one hears us. All of the isms are bad. Not just the one that affects you.
Let me preface this by disclosing that I'm not on Twitter, so I haven't personally seen these things, BUT that doesn't make the behavior any less problematic. If someone reading this has said or done any of the things the anon mentions and isn't sure what the fuss is about, my post attempts to explain why and give some context.
Tumblr media
It's long (☕🛋️) with thoughts on racism, parenthood, female friendship and the writing of fictional children, touching on misogyny and sexism, with a foray into (in)fidelity and textual analysis. In other words, the kitchen sink on Michonne and Carol, and their found family. Bring snacks.
Saying things that imply someone isn't fully human (even if you think goats are adorable) isn't nice for obvious reasons, but if it's a person of color, it's also fraught with racist undertones:
During the abolitionist movement, there was debate on whether black people had souls and if they were even human. Abducted and trafficked or bred into the plantation system, slaves were property and in legal documents (slave rolls, wills, and censuses) of the time, they weren't listed by name. There were tick marks for male/female and approximate age. The Three-Fifths Compromise (1787) counts each slave as three-fifths of a person for state representation (in Congress and taxes), which basically means that white people got a bigger say in governance while the enslaved definitely weren't citizens and didn't enjoy equal protection under the law.
Take a moment to consider what that would do to your self-esteem, if you were told you're worth 60% of another human but only insofar as it guarantees their rights to self-determination? You’re just chattel. The 13th Amendment (1865) abolished slavery, i.e. humans could no longer be owned, the 14th (1868) afforded citizenship and the 15th (1870) protects the right to vote regardless of race, color or previous condition of servitude, but these amendments also gave rise to the vile Black Codes and Jim Crow laws. That's the context into which comments on a POC's physical resemblance to an animal or their feral/beastly nature slot.
Tumblr media
What's the preoccupation with biological procreation in fandom, especially when the concept of ‘found family’ is the core of the show?
Adopted children are 'real' children, stepparents are the ones who 'step up.' They make a choice to parent—to guide and protect—someone into adulthood. That's not a small challenge. Like Carol said when she and Daryl searched for Judith in the Commonwealth, "there's this person totally dependent on you and you have to hope you make the right choices." Anyone can father a child, but to be a good dad requires commitment and love for said child. Rick chose Judith, i.e. acknowledged paternity. She is a Grimes, regardless of genetic matter. Any other argument is underpinned by misogyny and sexism.
There's no reason to doubt that RJ is Rick's biological son. Michonne was bereft and out in the woods, searching for signs of Rick. Her only company was Daryl who's a brother(-in-law) to her. Grief makes you do some funky things, but this was not the first time these two scoured the countryside in the wake of someone's death. They searched for the Governor after Merle and Andrea's murders—this is how they mourn.
It's incredibly insulting to Michonne to assume that she would either cheat on Rick or sleep with someone else right after the bridge blew up. Remember how angry and determined early-season Michonne was in the wake of her oldest son's death? This is a woman who isolates and internalizes her grief. She's not someone who numbs her pain with sex, so assuming her infidelity—counter to what the narrative tells us about her personality—is extremely problematic.
If we go back to examine the slave system again, after the Atlantic slave trade closed (1808), the plantations had to become self-sustaining. Female slaves were bred, often by their masters or some other white man of influence on the plantation. When the plantation owner then sold that progeny, he sold off his own children. (Sit with that thought for a second, particularly if you think biology is what defines paternity.) Black women's bodies were a commodity. They didn't have a right to consent, or a choice in having their children taken from them.
With Lori, viewers were explicitly told biological paternity might be different, but we also saw a discussion between Rick and Lori where practical paternity was decided. In the case of RJ, we have not been shown any evidence that paternity is anything other than Rick’s. The narrative doesn’t support any such theories because Michonne has shown no sexual or romantic interest in anyone else.
Tumblr media
Michonne and Carol have far more in common than what sets them apart. They both lost biological children early in the apocalypse. They both assumed parental roles for other children and lost them. They became fierce and strategic warriors, leaders of the communities. They both saved Judith by killing one or many other children. They both went on a quest to find a man and bring him home.
There's no reason for fans to pit them on opposing sides. We only saw glimpses of their relationship to one another in S9-10, where they sometimes came to issues from different ends. Not unlike how 'real' family functions. Michonne told Daryl, more than once—before he went to meet Carol at the dock and again after the parlay with Alpha, that Carol's place is with them, that she belongs. Michonne was understandably concerned with Carol's lack of sleep, with taking pills and sneaking off on fishing boats, but she inquired about Carol's dreams and tried to communicate that she has to put her responsibility towards the community before Carol's need for revenge.
That's not unlike a negotiation/disagreement between sisters. It doesn’t mean Michonne doesn’t care for Carol. She has a role to play within the family dynamics and towards helping Carol land in a better place, mentally and emotionally. Daryl's role is one of unwavering support and unconditional love. He can't tell Carol home truths and set boundaries/expectations, so someone else has to fulfill that function. Who better than the other woman who has also lost children?
The show, for most of its run, dismissed women's friendships as trivial and they were marginalized to the point of onscreen nonexistence. The women have friendships with men and male friendships are well represented, but the portrayal of friendships between women vanished after Lori died. There was a brief interlude of Maggie and Sasha, but it isn't until we see the remaining trio of Georgia ladies have a conversation in 901 that we start getting regular little peeks at women's familial interactions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The problem with RJ is that he has no personality. I suspect that the writers' room bumped against the limitations of the actor, so what we see onscreen is an attempt at hiding that. That's why RJ is absorbed by his comics when little Anthony, quite literally, reads his lines. If you can't depend on a young actor to deliver for a story arc, their use becomes limited to 'cute prop' and the trouble with casting very young characters is that you never know how the acting will eventually turn out.
Writing kids/teens is also a skill and one at which I don't think TWDU is very adept. The kid characters have to service the greater storyline, but very often end up dumbed down or become the yoda of the show because the room can't figure out what their function is beyond "plot device." Baby Yoda is endearing because he's an alien and functions within established parameters of the narrative/setting. Hershel and Ginny in Dead City aren't and neither is the French Messiah, Laurent, because none of them feel like real teenagers. They're sullen and obstinate to suit the story engine, but have no character development of their own.

Okay friends gather round because I’m here to talk about porn (this will be a long post).
Specifically, why it needs to be safer instead of banned, why it’s not inherently harmful, and how a lot of the harm associated with it is straight up prejudice.
I recently got drawn into an argument about this (i know, I should know better, but I guess this time I didn’t). People love to talk about how the porn industry is harmful because it’s “addictive” which makes it dangerous, or because it makes men do bad things.
I want to say first that this is just feeding into the “all men are inherently bad and violent” shit which I do NOT support because it is not true. A lot of men in patriarchal society are violent, yes, but only because that society tells those men they can have whatever they want, they can take it if we won’t give it to them, and there are no consequences for this behavior. This apathy is conditioned. If you never hold a man accountable for his actions and the ways in which he exploits others, OF COURSE he’s going to hurt people. This issue exist less with women because societally, women are conditioned to give of themselves to the point of burnout, to always place other people’s (most often specifically men’s) wants and needs and preferences over their own. Not because women are biologically less violent or selfish.
Now, there is something to be said about the ways in which certain kinds of pornography portray sexual relationships. In heterosexual male-centered porn, the woman is, more often than not, merely a vessel for his pleasure. She does what he wants, in the positions he wants, because he is the focus. This kind of porn is often characterized by a POV that makes it look as if you’re watching through the male actor’s eyes.
This kind of porn, especially if it is a man or boy’s introduction to sexual relationships/pleasure, can encourage them to see all women this way. If you teach a boy that women are meant to serve his whims because that’s just what women are for, of course he’s going to continue seeking out this kind of media. This is an example of societal prejudice and how it influences everything we do. It does not mean that pornography makes men misogynists.
The second point I want to discuss involves why I say we need reform and laws that keep people safe from exploitation, not a ban on pornography as a whole.
When I told the people I was arguing with that this is what I personally advocate for, they tried to say that I was admitting porn is bad, “because it hurts people.” One man said that I couldn’t possibly dismiss the experiences of real people hurt by the porn industry by saying porn isn’t harmful.
I want to make it exceptionally clear that I am absolutely not dismissing anyone’s experiences. I am well aware that many people are hurt by the modern pornography industry and have been for as long as sex work has existed. But I also want to make it clear that this is not because sex work is bad. It is because people get trafficked, and people often feel like they have no other options because of economic and life circumstances. Some people who entered the industry willingly, who even enjoy their work (crazy concept, I know) end up leaving because they were pressured into certain acts that they weren’t comfortable with. Some people get recorded without their consent. Some people have to leave because of harassment (and yes, sexual harassment IS a thing, even for sex workers). Some people feel like it is a path they will enjoy, but discover it’s not a kind of work they want to do. Some people find it incredibly draining. Some people’s coworkers make for an unpleasant or even unsafe work environment.
There are hundred of reasons someone might leave sex work or be harmed by the people they work with. This doesn’t mean that the work itself is morally wrong. Which is why I say that we need laws in place that protect sex workers from exploitation, and we need people in place to actually enforce those laws (rather than the slew of pedophiles and rapists we have in office right now, or the police officers who let traffickers off the hook for bribery - the financial kind and the human kind).
My third point involves the lack of any scientific backing for the claims that pornography is inherently harmful. While anecdotal evidence absolutely has a place in the discussion, and we should never dismiss someone who was hurt in their time in the industry, this is not scientific. Neither are sermons, unfortunately for most of the people I talk to about this. Usually when I ask for a study backing their claims - just one single peer reviewed study - I am offered this:
The very first thing I want to point out about this paper is that it is not a study. It is essentially a personal interest essay. Just because a work references other works does not make it credible. The man who wrote this paper is a religious fanatic, first of all, and while his Phd does actually appear to be real (oftentimes I get referenced to people with fake doctorates) that does not automatically make any words he writes factual. Several of the footnotes include links that look pretty legit but actually lead nowhere. A couple are just surveys where they asked religious families if their children struggled with mental health consequences from pornography, which is again anecdotal evidence at best, and definitely not a peer reviewed, credible source.
Secondly, if you read this paper you may notice that in a few places Fagan claims part of the mental toll pornography takes on teens is the shame and guilt it creates. Gee, can anyone guess why a sexually repressed teenager in a conservative Christian purity culture home might feel ashamed of indulging in sexual pleasure?? My personal “porn addiction” guilt went away when I realized that I wasn’t hurting anyone by watching it, and my sexual pleasure was not sinful or dirty. What fixed my mental turmoil was letting go of the shame, not letting go of the thing that made me happy.
All of this is to say that the shame and guilt around teens watching porn does not come from the pornography itself, but from the adults around us who tell us we are dirty rotten sinners who are going to burn in hell for wanting to feel good.
Fagan also talks about the consequences of pornography on children, without ever addressing the fact that this is harmful because usually if a child is viewing porn, it is in the context of grooming. I’m not advocating for showing your young child pornography obviously (please don’t do that) but it feels incredibly irresponsible to say that we need to ban porn because “if a child is groomed with it that hurts the child”. In his list of reasons why pornography is harmful to children, Fagan also includes things like it can be upsetting for a child to overhear their parent engaging in “phone sex”. Surely I’m not the only one wondering what that actually has to do with porn…?
Now, I’m not saying that no one is ever engaging with pornography to a point of harm. But this is still an issue of misattributed blame. If someone is watching porn in excess, using it as a coping mechanism of some kind, that is a problem that has very little to do with the porn they’re watching. People fill holes of emotional and physical needs in all sorts of different ways. My cousin ended up on crutches because she went through a rough breakup and dealt with it by running. She overdid it too many times and injured herself, but no one would ever say that means we have to ban running.
My main point is that safe, consensual sex work is not harmful. If consenting adults wish to have sex, play sexual games, record themselves, watch a recording of another consenting adult, or do literally any other kind of sexual activity - that is perfectly okay. We don’t need to shame them or condemn them for wanting to feel pleasure or for working a job in which they bring other people pleasure. This is purity culture bullshit.
And on the subject of teens - it is literally the most natural thing in the word for a teenager to feel curious about their bodies and desires and to want to explore that. Again, I’m not advocating for showing your teenager pornography, but If they find it themselves that’s a wonderful opportunity to have discussions with them about safe sex, boundaries, consent, and all the things. You can even talk to them about it before they seek out the porn. You can teach them about masturbation, and let them know that these desires are not shameful or bad or dirty.
I’m also really tired of certain people insisting that porn is “addictive” because it produces dopamine in the brain. Wanting to feel good is not a crime for fuck’s sake.

Quitting AI, Not Why You'd Think
I had a long and successful career with ChatGPT, honestly. I know people are railing against it on principle, not fully understanding what it can do and what it's capable of. Absolutely, writers should feel threatened by it, not because it produces a quality product but because it likely ripped off their work in its construction.
But my experience with it was largely positive. I always got the warnings, blah-blah-blah can't produce explicit content, but I also got very good at leading it to produce its own explicit content. You'd think OpenAI would be interested in talking with me, to learn how I gamed its own system to get it to produce some really crass, graphic sexual content, but no. Places like that only want to build stronger and higher walls, not learn and grow.
And anyway, it just feeds into my basic resentment toward these organizations that practice zero tolerance toward lovemaking between consensual adults, yet have no stated restrictions against Nazis, hate speech, christofascism, and bigotry. If anything, like in the cases of Substack and Stripe, they find these offensive practices far too lucrative to ever cut off. People who bitch about porn are outsiders, listening to propaganda and misinformation about it, with no education and no idea how to consume it.
Example: Some attention-starved jackass pirates a clip from a porn film, where a man's fucking a woman doggy-style, from behind. That's all you can see, but the jackass uploads it on a shared site, describing it in terms that describe his personal fantasy: "Stepbro Woke Me by Fucking Me Hard" but with more typos. There's nothing in the video that suggests any kind of relationship: it's just a very toned, hairless man having sex with a male-gaze sexdoll, and that's it. But the detractors of porn will claim that some form of incest is taking place, and what's this going to do to the kids, etc.
Well, for one thing, if these puritanical hypocrites weren't so busy shutting down libraries and removing sexual health content from the schools, maybe kids wouldn't be forced to seek out porn to answer their basic and natural questions about biology.
My point is, the critics take this stuff at face value, when it serves their interests. In other cases, they interpret what's happening in the worst way, to suit their agenda. You're all too young to remember Attorney General Edwin Meese's Final Report on Pornography, but in this indictment on porn he likewise cherry-picked source material (he excluded lesbian porn, being too threatened by empowered women seeking their own bliss without men) and contrived the worst interpretations of what he did find. I mean, he's a conservative, so he's going to lie to fulfill his agenda, but still.
My position, as I study the participants of porn and the reviewers of porn and the philosophy of ethical porn, is increasingly that this is a fundamental and primal aspect of the human condition that should be protected, if anything. If people are concerned about abuse and human trafficking, fucking address that. Go after the pedophiles and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law, with prejudice. But if a lonely or horny adult wants to see two beautiful adults fucking each other, gently or hard, there should be no law prohibiting this. Those actors should be protected like any other. They're selling their bodies at least as much as any coal miner or construction worker, and far more than any fucking landlord.
Suppressing this shit only makes it worse, measurably worse. Look at any religious institution that bans marriage out of wedlock or enforces celibacy in its leadership. Each week, the news is full of how badly this practice runs awry, in the ugliest ways. It's priests, pastors, and evangelists who are raping children and raping underage family members and covering up thousands of victims' cases, not porn stars. Yet religious groups still feel they have any position from which to spread lies and condemnation—it illustrates the depth of their hypocrisy.
Wow, I got way off track. I just see all these things connected, everything existing within a system. I write about couples finding creative ways to have sex, but I can't sell my work through PayPal or Stripe because they feel it's their role to enforce morality upon Western society. They claim that porn's a "high risk" category, when actually it was their prudish censorship that drove Tumblr's worth down 99.8%. For that matter, porn created the first secure online financial transaction programs out of necessity, the same goddamn structure that PayPal and Stripe now capitalize on. And Stripe terminated my account, but transferred $7,000 in ad revenue from Twitter to DC_Draino, an avowed white supremacist and misogynist who'd been banned from Twitter prior to the Faulknerian idiot man-child's purchase of it.
So. Stripe's fine with Nazis, but not with lovemaking. In their Prohibited and Restricted Businesses statement, they call out "Pornography and other mature audience content (including literature, imagery and other media) depicting nudity or explicit sexual acts" but nowhere do they forbid anything resembling hate speech or bigotry.
When I pointed this out to them, when I asked their rationale for supporting Nazis, they literally replied "we do not permit adult content." They refused to address the question and then they stopped responding.
So yeah, protecting porn has become part of my platform for protecting freedom of expression. And no, enabling Nazi propaganda does not fall under this (or "freedom of speech" as the profoundly uninformed put it). Tolerance is a social agreement: if you don't agree to it, you're not covered by it, and fascism is all about gaining power to destroy freedom of expression. Anti-intellectuals suggest that fascism can be defeated in the "marketplace of ideas," but what is left to debate after a fucking century of fighting fascism? What fresh, new ideas do we need to hear from Nazis? That's all bullshit, and they know it is, they're just bad-faith actors wasting everyone's time and energy by making them explain it over and over.
Yet Substack will retain and support literal Nazis on their platform, under the aegis of preserving "freedom of speech," while censoring adult content. The CEO of Patreon will go on an alt-right talk show to extol defending "freedom of speech," then suspend an indie news org at the behest of the Proud Boys and terminate adult content accounts where he can find them. Stripe will facilitate the payment of Nazis, while censoring adult content. Hate is too profitable, and love has to be quashed where it's found. That's what our dual governments, the one in Washington DC and the one on Wall Street, are legislating.
So I'm done playing with ChatGPT. I'll build something useful from our collaboration, and I'll find a way to sell it (and pirates in other countries will seize it and distribute it for personal gain (fuck pirates)), but I'm not playing around with ChatGPT anymore. ChatGPT won't suffer for it, though hopefully someday some other smut writer will receive the benefit of my transgressive programming, and in a small way I'll have achieved immortality. Not that I want that, not in a world like this.

I am so disgusting with the amount of sympathy Fouseytube is getting. A grown man openly admits on camera to raping multiple sex trafficking victims, and gets more sympathy than the victims for his "mental health" and how much "help" he needs. A teenage girl who kills her trafficker gets way less compassion. There is no discussion of her mental health, except to say it is no excuse and she still knew it was wrong.
Not only that, he then told a victim that he "knew how she felt" (since he was one of the rapists). And then he raped her (drunk) in the airport bathroom, then posted all of it to Youtube.
Even the "good guys", the Youtubers I trusted and liked, barely mention the admittance to such horrific crimes, and sympathize and talk about the importance of mens mental health and showing compassion instead.
Every actor, every Youtuber. Will there ever be a single male that I like that doesnt end up being some kind of sexual predator or apologist? Let me down, betray my trust, show me that it is indeed all men? I am begging.

smut and nsfw works can be very deranged sometimes but how is it fair to compare it to the actual harm of porn? even if there was absolutely 0 effect on the people watching it(such as increased likelyhood of sexual aggression, decreased empathy for rape victims, irreversible effects on the brain etc) the actors in porn videos would still experience what they experience. you can fantasize and preach till your mouth goes dry about the self-sufficient empowered sex workers who choose their own work, but it won't make the truth of millions of trafficked male and female children fueling the industry disappear. the high rates of suicide, addictions to get through the scenes, physical harm thats basically part of the job description? there is so many porn stars that have come out with their stories of what they experienced on set, yes even the successfull ones that went into the industry willingly. their abuse is not comparable to words on paper.
not the mention "my christian parents are against it so i must support it" is a very weak argument. its cringe shortsighted reactionary bullshit.
1) if there is increased likelyhood of sexual aggression, decreased empathy for rape victims, irreversible effects on the brain then how come millenials and gen z, which grew up on these, have a better understanding of consent, more egalitarian views on gender and sex, there's less teen pregnancy and less sex being had overall by the younger crowd even pre-pandemic. secondly, WHO is having an increased likelihood of sexual aggression? WHO has a decreased empathy for rape victims? because i'm sure you can point to america's flawless and amazing attitudes towards women and rape victims historically (sarcasm, in case you're too stupid to realize). studies show that men who access sex work have more egalitarian and feminist attitudes than those with antisex and antiporn sentiment
perhaps youre talking about the cis men who already are prone to abuse women and are using things like 'rough sex' and 'bdsm' as an excuse, and its more visible now? because that takes a lot of nuance to talk about and i agree with you there that this IS an issue, but these men would have found ways to do that anyway. perhaps the issue is not the porn itself but the society that encourages violence in an era where increased societal collapse is happening all around us? where the trend of backlash against women has been happening for over a decade and really isn't tied to porn/sex at all but more towards increasing feminist attitudes toward work and gender roles going mainstream?
2) so you're ignoring sex workers yet again, got it. because there's also a lot of sex workers who came out and said that they love their work, they love being a sex worker. and in either case, these are the same people who have been criminalized and brutalized by police globally, the main source of their abuse. in fact YOU can fantasize and preach til YOUR mouth goes dry about how its the worst industry ever while ignoring the millions of queer, disabled, women, and poc who are in this line of work and love it.
3) and are these millions of traffiked children in the room with us now? you think that if there were millions of traffiked kids, they'd show up in mainstream porn more, right? except they dont. 100 members of congress asked the DOJ to investigate OnlyFans bc of 80 possible instances of CSAM in the same time that facebooks 20 million cases went ignored by literally everyone. and who's the site thats getting punished? pornhub and other porn sites which have a well-documented effort of putting time, resources, and moderation of getting rid of this content that some users upload. endtraffikinghub was a fucking psyop by far-right christian orgs posing as 'anti-traffiking' orgs, oh my god. where the hell are you getting these numbers anyway? because CSAM is NOT porn and NOT the porn industry and its psychotic to equate them.
4) high rates of suicides, addictions to get through scenes. can you link any studies? and again, do you TALK to sex workers or do you just rehash claims made by these antiporn/"antitraffiking" "activists" who are almost always far-right christians in disguise (hello look at NCOSE, formerly known as morality in media) rather than the actual people who do the work? because i can point to you several thousands of people who show up to their non-porn non-sex work jobs faded as hell and also have suicidal tendnencies from being in those industries. the issue is LABOR & CAPITALISM, not sex and not porn.
5) sure, there is always cause for abuse of workers. but again that is a labor issue, because we live in a capitalist society and across the board there are workers being abused. sexual harrassment and assault is not unique to porn, and you're naive to think that lmao. if you truly gaf about getting rid of the industry you'd push for what sex workers are calling for, decriminalization. there are hundreds of sex worker unions who talk about the issues they face, and most of it is decriminalization. in india a union of 60k people recently won a big court case on this. its a labor issue if anything. the main source of abuse is extensive criminalization and banking discrimination which pushes people into poverty and homelessness as they're forced to do more irl work and come across the police who have been killing and raping sex workers this entire time.
6) and no, it's not a weak argument when we live in an increasingly christofascist state and world. its' actually a very very good argument for the suppression of sex and sex workers. because these same antiporn "activists" have co-opted feminist language and you're all falling for it and once again ignoring sex workers
and lets just clarify. people say "porn industry" and are referring to the sites like pornhub. the "industry" is where the workers are. there is no like, shadow overrulling company making all the porn. there are a bunch of filming companies who sex workers HAVE spoken out against and a bunch that they love to work for instead. there are millions of people who work on their own terms, from their own sites too. my PERSONAL opinion that has been motivated by listening to sex workers and reading both sociology and psychological research has been that i will always always always support the worker first before the industry. there are a lot of issues, that is true! but it's mainly a labor issue and sex workers have BEEN on the frontlines of negotiating for better working conditions. to say otherwise would be foolish and would show you simply dont pay attention. why do you think many of them go to use sites like onlyfans now over pornhub?
