7 Questions to Ask Yourself About Your Urban Fantasy Story

I came up with a list of 7 questions you should ask yourself when writing an urban fantasy story. Check them out!

When you’re writing an urban fantasy story, there are some things to consider, most of which have to do with taking a location that exists in real life and giving it a nice supernatural twist. How much do you know about the setting you’ve chosen? Is it a setting that already exists? And if it is, what are some questions to ask yourself about your urban fantasy story to take this setting that…

The "I know a Guy" mechanic, but you can't just make up a new npc to help. Instead, you can once per session point at an established npc and say, "aw, shit, that's my ex."

the human xb summons him not to sell his soul but with a business deal, see, demonic deals work that its a soul in exchange for whatever you want, not necessarily your own soul, but a soul. hypno cannot interact with people except his summoner, but xb can run a business where he asks for “harmless” IOUs from people, getting them to sign a piece of paper which is actually a contract for possession of your soul. since xb is a regular human, it would mean nothing, but with hypno’s help it’s magically binding and they enter a mutually beneficial deal where hypno gets a ridiculous amount of souls and xb is given what he wants by hypno.

their partnership starts off solely as a business one, but as time goes on, they grow closer and also begin to care about the business that was just supposed to be a front for them to gain souls, and once xb gets the power and wealth he originally wanted, they focus their efforts on growing Horsehead Farms as a company. they advertise themselves as a “safer” alternative than dealing directly with demons, giving people whatever they want in exchange for an IOU - not a real soul (it is their real soul, but they don’t tell them that). they manage to become a major competitor to all of hell. since it has a human head of the company, people assume it is more trustworthy. xb and hypno engage in all sorts of evil capitalistic ventures

eventually hypno gets kicked out of hell, a feat no-one thought possible, for ruining every other demons’ livelihood, and is reincarnated into a regular human. xb is investigated by officials due to the scammy and dangerous nature of Horsehead Farms, and in an epic car chase where xb tries to escape, he crashes and dies. for all the human lives he’s ruined by stealing souls, he is sent to hell and becomes a demon. they find eachother, and seeing how there’s still one human and one demon overall, they see no reason to not start their business again

Steel and circuitry woven deep into flesh and blood. Biomechanics taking over bodily functions. Cyborgs who work as psychoplumbers are teched out for the dungeons, but first and foremost the cybernetics are to give you a lease on life.

The Cyborg is all about energy. How much you have. How you spend it. How you recharge. What you're willing to do when you don't have enough energy.

The Cyborg picks two assistive programs to start and also picks a power source.

Psychogold

Electric Current

Sunlight

Adrenaline

Batteries

Momentum

I enjoy how the players choices here have big implications for how the world works. (Like psychogold may not be a thing if never picked.)

The Cyborg is essentially about fatigue in the way the Werewolf is about pain. Their Lateral Moves (moves through which they can give someone else tokens) are about being willing to ask for help. Their post-delving checks are focused on if they looked after themselves or pushed too far.

In PSYCHODUNGEON we delve into nightmarish psychostructures, battle monsters, navigate a hostile domain, and help the mind the dungeon sprung from gain closure. We do this for a meagre paycheck. On the surface we try to get by living our lives in a busy city that wouldn’t miss you if you fell off the face of the planet.

Different types of witches have been on my mind and I’ve been getting into the whole sentient A.I media because of tiktok and it got me really thinking about a techmage who’s familiar is an a.i companion.

Sure it’s not an “official” familiar or recognized by the board of witches but, hey, with Tech on the rise why not have an a.i companion to be your witchy familiar?

And not only that but, tech mages are the only ones who could technically be on the same level as a sentient a.i and might actually know where they’re coming from and guide them on humanity and how their sentience works. Tech mages have the power to mix technology with their magic and some movies have a.i become sentient in away that it is kinda magic. Just coming into existence realizing it.

They can really make a connection with each other since maybe tech mages are a new form of magic while not recognized by the high board of witches and magic due to it being discovered on the more “modern” end end of humanity and an a.i realized that it’s a robot trapped not being able to experience what it’s like, there is one person that could help and them being a familiar as away of thanking the tech mage for bringing some sort of purpose rather than being lost is really sweet.

Imagine them trying it out for the first time. Lots of fumbling, missteps, and failed jumps. But they're sturdy! If they bungle a fall they got wings!

And it's so fun for them because you can't do parkour in the Celestial Realm! The walls and structures are smooth and perfect, no handholds or footholds. Ledges so polished, it's hard to get a good grip on it. The buildings are far too stretched out there's no choice but to rely on their wings to cross. The best they can do is to run laps around the fields or fly. Not to mention they're angels and they gotta behave.

But in the Devildom and now that they're demons? Oh hell the fuck yes they can be gremlins climbing and jumping all over.

The buildings there are a mishmash of different styles and eras. From brick and wood houses from bygone days to sleek and modern homes. Traditional looking taverns and izakayas on the same street as concrete and glass office buildings. An old tavern on the outside but is a modern cafe on the inside.

Both boys are over the moon from all the variety. Running on cobblestones that become asphalt in the next turn. Climbing up a house's brick wall to jump to the adjacent building's fire escape railings. Messing up tiled roofs and denting antennas. Tripping alarms (both mechanical and magical) as they go through a window. Using their wings for an extra oomph to make the jump. Stopping by a fast food place mid run because the smell was too irresistible then going back at it after a short break. Sometimes they'd be in a goofy mood and race each other from point A to point B. "Hey hey race ya to that funny lookin statue!"

It's not without property damages and injuries of course.

Beelzebub landed too hard on someone's roof because he jumped from a place too high.

Mammon breaking a pole after using it as some sort of springboard.

Bumping into the demons who occupy/work at the places they're parkouring at.

Leaving claws marks on surfaces because they needed a more secure and better grip.

Sprains and scrapes because they went too fast and wasn't able to control their momentum.

Being covered in dirt or dripping wet from failing stunts.

The House of Lamentation gets a stream of complaint letters attached with pictures and quotes of the damages. Both have so much fun with it that Lucifer is willing to put up with the complaints.

They'd come home all sweaty but smiling, talking about their run in excited voices and eager to try a new route or a new stunt.

The "Type A Demon" doesn't correspond exactly to one of AD&D's official demons so its description is up to the DM, just like the 2 NPCs. The column headings at the top of the page were: Class, Align, LVL, HTK (hits to kill = hit points), AC, SL (social level), STR, INT, WIS, CON, DEX, CHAR, WPN (weapon).

weird urban fantasy story where it's impossible to tell if the main character is suffering severe withdrawals of fantasy-drugs, losing his mind, or genuinely being haunted by someone only he can see. he's invited the maybe ghost, maybe drug induced hallucination to stay for dinner.
