AU Thursday: Valicer In The Dark Vs Baldur's Gate III
Okay, so, yesterday I happened to mention that I'd gotten into Baldur's Gate III -- and that a certain Crime Trio of mine (based on an entirely different RPG, I might add), had decided to lay claim to it as a potential AU of their OWN AU. No, I don't know why I'm like this either. *sigh* Anyway, there's not really that much to it at this point in time -- while I have spoiled myself on the story (and seen a bunch of cutscenes thanks to my friend @gaydragonwizards), I haven't actually played that much of the game itself and thus don't know exactly how the trio would react to EVERY quest and NPC in the game. I do know some basics, though:
-->The AU starts with the Nautiloid happening to pop into the Valicer In The Dark universe by mistake while navigating -- the mind flayers decide they may as well abduct some people while they're here, and unfortunately Victor, Alice, and Smiler, walking the streets of Six Towers, are in range of the tentacles and taken aboard to be infected
-->Smiler wakes up in the canonical pod and finds their way to Us, saving them and immediately bonding with the little intellect devourer ("I'm a they/them too!"); Alice wakes up in a different pod nearby and is the first to meet Lae'zel, and helps her fight the imps; and Victor wakes up in the same room as Shadowheart, and is working on freeing her when the others arrive -- they get her out, get to the helm, and manage to fight their way to the transponder and connect the nerves
-->If you're wondering about potential language barriers, one of the good things about the tadpoles randomly connecting your mind to other people's is that it allows you to pick up Common super fast -- I basically see them getting a bit of an "information dump" on a few key things about the reality they're currently in during the initial connections
-->Also, in the process of freeing Shadowheart, the group find that woman in the other room and mess with her console, accidentally causing her to change -- a creepy moment made even creepier by Victor's Ghost Mind ability letting him briefly see the woman's soul escape...and then burn up as she transforms into a mind flayer. We will come back to this later
-->After the crash landing, Victor, Alice, and Smiler are very confused when they wake up to see a blue sky...and then, after waking up Shadowheart and being told, essentially, "it's blue because it's sunny?" are utterly GOBSMACKED to find themselves in a world with an ACTUAL SUN. Though shock and delight quickly turn to "oh wow, this is actually a lot hotter than we're used to, we need to find lighter clothes fast" XD
-->From there, they pick up the rest of the companions and work their way through the main plot, hoping to both find a way to get the damn tadpoles out of their heads and get home (because as nice as a world with a sun is, it's not Duskwall, and Smiler in particular would like to see their parents again plz)
-->Naturally, being pretty good-hearted people, they do the nice versions of the quests and help people out as much as possible -- though, also being a group of Shadows who nick things and sabotage schemes for their living, I can see them offering tips to the gang of tiefling children thieves and scam artists to help them in their chosen path. XD Also, Alice probably has to be talked out of killing Kagha right then and there when she threatens Arabella, and I'm not sure the snake survives THAT little encounter. Alice has a thing about people threatening children, as you might expect!
-->I foresee a lot of confusion on both sides about how different Duskwall and the Shattered Isles are from Faerun -- not just the sun thing, but also Victor having access to an entirely different form of magic (Gale in particular is like "wtf is this??? This is not Weave???"); the group not knowing what horses or cows are (both animals are extinct in their world) and having to be introduced to them -- while, on the flip side, being perfectly cool with eating rat; and the trio being briefly like "well, it's horrible what happened to that poor woman on the Nautiloid, but at least her ghost won't be slowly going insane and trying to feast on the life essence of the living" and the others being like "what." Leading to Victor, Alice, and Smiler learning that this world has an afterlife and being like D: as it dawns on them that the total destruction of the soul is not an accepted way to keep the world from being riddled from ghosts here. (The others are once again like "what the FUCK is wrong with your reality?")
-->Smiler spends a good portion of the early game looking for Us, before finally accepting sadly that the intellect devourer probably didn't survive the crash...and then they get to the mind flayer colony under Moonrise in Act Two and "Friend! You found the helm!" :D They are beyond happy to see Us and won't hear a word said against them from the other companions (who are naturally BAFFLED as to why Smiler wants an intellect devourer as a pet) -- and Us, for their part, is entirely loyal to their friend Smiler and all THEIR friends, because the kindness Smiler showed to them on the Nautiloid caused them to bond more closely with them than the rest of the hive :) Victor and Alice warm up to the little thing pretty quick, while the others...well, they get used to having a brain wandering around pretending to be a kitty. XD
-->Part of me would like Shar to somehow be responsible for the Shattered Isles no longer having a sun...and thus be real annoyed that people are still living in that world eight hundred and forty-seven years later (as Alice puts it, "you brought the darkness, and we just lit it back up again")
-->And in the "overpowered nonsense that wouldn't make it into any actual story stuff but is fun to think about," I enjoy pondering the possibility of the trio, when faced with the Avatar of Myrkul, using Victor's Whisper ghost-fighting stuff on it -- and successfully forcing it into a spirit bottle. I imagine the other companions would be like "how the FUCK did you bottle part of a GOD?!" while Myrkul would be just "...guess it beats dying again." Oh, and Withers finds it hilarious in his droll way. XD Bonus points for talking to Myrkul about what the damn plan with the Absolute even gets him, Myrkul realizing that he's somehow been had by the Netherbrain, and switching sides against his former compatriots because, yeah, this mind flayer invasion does NOT benefit him in any way, wtf.
-->Or, if you would like DIFFERENT godly intervention, I did have an idea where Mar-Mal is also able to access Faerun through the blessing they gave Smiler, and uses its influence to protect Smiler from the tadpole instead of Smiler having to rely on the Dream Visitor and the artifact. They task Smiler with spreading their influence and getting worshipers so Mar-Mal can do more on this plane, and Smiler happily talks up their god to anyone who will listen (also sharing what samples they have left of their Joy Serum). And fortunately for them, people are willing to throw at least a few prayers the way of a god of pure happiness...meaning that during the endgame, when it's time to fight the Netherbrain, Mar-Mal's gotten just enough power to come into Faerun, filling the sky with spiral clouds as they manifest. The gang still has to fight the Netherbrain, but it's easier as the Netherbrain is, um, a bit distracted trying to not be mindwarped by Mar-Mal! XD And once the threat is defeated, Mar-Mal is able to open up a temporary portal to bring Victor, Alice, and Smiler home. With the implication that they could get back eventually...like, say, in six months to catch up. :p
Whew -- bit more than I expected here! I don't know if anything is actually going to come from this -- I mean, I definitely have to get the REGULAR Valicer In The Dark stuff done first -- but it's fun to think about as I play the game. And it has inspired me to make a few not-incorrect quotes/shitposty scenes...

What's next?
Blood Hunt is over and, as ever, I feel compelled to share my thoughts and expectations/predictions. And make it double because you know this post will be longer since we're talking about my favorite doctors, and that means apologies in advance ~
As already mentioned before, Stephen's suspicion was debated whether Victor was the one pulling the strings behind the event or not. And I suppose it isn't necessarily true at this point. I see Victor (at least, the current characterization of his entire persona) as one of the smartest opportunists in the Marvel universe. Tracing back a couple of years to his latest appearances, it happened a few times: he took part of Dormammu's power when he teamed up with the Guardians of the Galaxy and the X-Men; he created his own team of mutants, using it to create connections and collect debts, as well as stealing a seed of Krakoa; despite being a flashback, he used Eddie and his symbiote to study immortality in order to save his mother and also obtain the Darkhold, among many other schemes. He is, after all, a villain, and seeks power and control, although his motivations are unique to his character, which means he will do as he pleases.
In other words, Victor is complex. His ego and pride exceeds every hero's and villain's in this fictional universe, meaning that, despite his alliances, he will betray his partners if the opportunity arises. Go ahead and ask Namor. It's part of their dynamics.
Tumblr media
(Fantastic Four v1 #6)
And yet, no matter how many times, his frenemies will always end up meeting with him once more, especially when it comes to save the world from bigger threats.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Avengers/X-Men: AXIS #8)
In short, he's always eager to betray his allies but has a very strict code and takes an incredible amount of pride when it comes to his word. It's very contradictory of him, but it's part of his complexity. Take a look, for instance, in these following panels: he makes an alliance with Eddie, betrays him by stealing his symbiote and, when defeated, stays his hand and doesn't send his arm after Eddie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Venom: Lethal Protector II #4-5)
With all that in mind, my intent here boils down to what happened in Blood Hunt and the relationship he shares with Stephen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Blood Hunt #5)
First of all, Victor doesn't consider this a betrayal. Stephen used his words poorly, and an opportunity emerged. It IS convenient, it IS shady, and he is aware of that. But that's what Doom does.
Secondly, Victor wouldn't mind betraying Stephen if he didn't respect him. Why am I saying that? Because he has done it before to several allies, as I just discussed. And he doesn't care. But this isn't some random guy who only had something he wanted. This is the man who went to literal hell with him in order to save his beloved mother. They fought as much as they teamed up. Victor saved and took Stephen's life in different moments.
There's this gray area of respect that was totally exploited and taken advantadge of. And of course it was, Victor is an antagonist. It's the drama sauce being cooked here.
But that doesn't mean that this is the end. And here comes an important part -- whether you consider it biased or not by own my interpretations: what comes next?
I don't believe for a second that we're getting a new Secret Wars or a new portrayal of a tyrant. As I stated before, Victor craves acknowledgment, which comes as his need to rule and control things his way. This is why he declared himself the true savior of the planet.
Tumblr media
(Blood Hunt #5)
Having the mantle is an accomplishment to his status of power. Or so he thinks. What he doesn't know is the pain and loneliness Stephen has been through by carrying this duty. It's not a blessing, it's a burden.
Tumblr media
(What If? Magik Became Sorcerer Supreme)
I believe this is the point of having Doom as the Sorcerer Supreme. It's a mantle every magic user craves, but no one is truly aware of what it means. And Victor is about to find out.
As for Stephen, I've collected all the sneak peeks from Doctor Strange #18 that Pasqual posted on ig (here). And he's really depressed for losing the mantle, just as I suspected. In here, we see that he's reminiscing the moment he gave Victor a piece of his soul.
Tumblr media
I strongly believe this will play an important part in the story. Because Jed's Stephen carries such a compassionate soul filled with overwhelming altruism and love. Yes, there's a piece missing in Stephen's soul, but what that piece will do in a heart of iron like Victor's?
See where I'm going with this...?
This is what I have in mind, of course. And, unfortunately, it really depends on the next writer. Some of them really enjoy Victor's shallow villainous side. But if we get someone who sees through Doom's layers, we're really walking towards to an interesting reading. Which means we can expect anything at this point, from Secret Wars level of tyranny, leading the sorcerers to retrieve the mantle, to a wholesome character development that will shift the scales of their relationship.
Lastly, before I conclude this post, I just want to touch some points regarding technicalities. In my opinion, I don't believe Jed was forced to conclude his Doctor Strange run(s) because of MCU!synergy. I'm not saying there isn't synergy at play here, but Jed has been hitting Doom since Strange v3, way before this year's announcement. He IS the one who wrote Blood Hunt, after all. Still, I'm really saddened that he's concluding his trilogy. No one has ever shown such a level of passion towards Stephen and Clea like he did. And I was really blessed to witness it all from the very beginning. I don't know what's coming next for Stephen, but I'm pretty sure he will not be disappear completely. Sided? Unfortunately, yes. It's Doom's time to have the spotlight. But definitely not completely gone.
With that in mind, I'm aware that this conclusion caused discomfort and mistrust in the fandom. It's hard for me to love these two characters who are intertwined in a frenemies relationship and not feel excited about it. But I hear you. I see them both with depth and love them even in their flaws. And I hope that the next story will highlight these aspects. I can always be wrong. But if I can offer just a little of comfort, I will always try.
This isn't a goodbye. We still have the last DS issue. That one will be harder. But we've been through so much worse, right? No matter what, this Sanctum will always be open.

Hey Liv! I'm in the mood for something really angsty and sad but I can't handle unhappy endings. Any recs?
Hi there! I totally get what you mean, while I tend to avoid hardcore angst, sometimes I’m just craving that kind of overwhelming sadness without having to a see a character die. I loved the angsty reads below and I hope you do, too! For those looking for angst + unhappy endings, I recommend this brilliant rec list curated by @kbrick. Happy sad readings!
you've got the antidote for me by Kandakicksass (M, 21k)
When Harry Potter unintentionally severs their soulbond before it can fully form, Draco Malfoy resigns himself to a slow death and decides not to burden Harry with a soulmate he's made it very clear he doesn't want. He's never been selfless before, but for Harry, he can try.
Vale Sanare by RurouniHime (M, 23k)
Draco’s world gains a new component just when he thought he’d sorted everything out.
On One's Knees by pir8fancier (E, 34k)
The war is over and to the victors go the spoils. If you are triggered by infidelity, this is not the fic for you.
As Souls From Bodies Steal by Femme (E, 41k)
Hope may be found in the oddest of places, even in the bleakness of winter.
Super Rich Kids by @thusspoketrish (E, 81k)
Draco Malfoy has become disillusioned by the glitz and glamour of the scandalous lives of the Post-Second Wizarding War Pureblood Elite. Enter: one existential crisis, one group of thieving cynical friends, and several terrible, terrible decisions.
Merlin Works in Mysterious Ways by lordhellebore (M, 82k)
When Harry is forced to form a Blood Bond with Draco Malfoy under threat of death, he thinks his future will consist of a cold home and sexual frustration. But when a group of left-over Death Eaters decides to stir trouble, their lives change completely – and it takes them both some years to figure out whether it’s for better or for worse. Cw: major permanent disability
I Am Not Who I Became by mab_di (E, 93k)
Draco left England after the trials and has travelled the world meeting wizards and Muggles from different cultures and with vastly different relationships to magic, each other, and the natural world. Now he's a fisherman in Finland on commercial vessels. Harry has been struggling since the war and has become a recluse while trying to write his autobiography.
Nor All That Glisters by @sweet-s0rr0w (E, 110k)
Lonely and frustrated on house arrest, with no prospects for the future, Draco begins brewing Felix Felicis in an attempt to improve his lot. Just in the short term, of course. He isn’t a total idiot. But before long he finds himself with a thriving business, a nice flat, some actual (albeit irritatingly Gryffindor) friends, and a very satisfying sex life. What’s more, no-one is hexing him in the street. And Harry Potter is single, and gorgeous, and giving Draco decidedly interested looks.
Grounds for Divorce by @tepre (E, 122k)
Malfoy finds a coin. Harry finds a letter. A story about histories, a story about families. A story about a lemon tree somewhere in Upper Egypt.
There Is Always the Moon by @firethesound (T, 159k) - open ending
Draco's life after the war is everything he wanted it to be: it's simple, and quiet, and predictable, and safe. But when a mysterious curse shatters the peace he'd worked so hard to build, there's only one person he can trust to help him. After all, Harry Potter has saved his life before. Now Draco has to believe that Potter will be able to do it one more time.

OUAT Rewatch Report Part 2: The Shepherd through Fruit of the Poisonous Tree
1. I always expect Snow/Charming episodes to be boring, but the two of them are too precious to be boring. I think it would get old real fast with different actors. Of course, I haven’t gotten up to the “constant relationship drama” phase really, so we’ll see.
2. I’m excited to see more Dr. Whale, and think it’s cute how proud he is of David waking up, all “no way he wakes up on someone else’s watch”. Aw, Victor, did you have a little urge to yell “HE’S ALIVE!”? I’m also convinced that his little mini-success there helped change him, the way the major characters who got episodes to themselves changed when trauma from their previous lives was resolved in the present day. Nudged him from behaving like a womanizer with a wandering eye to more of a Gentleman. (Although I am half convinced he was more distracted by the color red than anything else. It is the first color he ever saw, if I recall correctly. And I am now totally convinced that Regina designed his cursed personality based on her experience of him. “He will be CONSUMED BY HIS WORK and DESPERATELY LONELY, CRAVING ANY CONNECTION, but he will only ever manage to break hearts THE WAY HE BROKE MINE.” or something.)
3. hilarious that Regina was like “I need someone without a heart” looked at Graham with tears falling down his face “PERFECT”. Pretty sure Regina made her decision based mainly on his hotness.
4. ugh poor Graham. Gaslit sex slave with what is functionally heavy depression (that’s the effect I deduced being heartless generally has, because it’s clearly not literally “can’t feel anything at all” but it definitely feels that way and leaves emotions very numb). It’s difficult to reconcile Regina keeping Graham as her mind-controlled sex slave with her eventual redemption. I just have to acknowledge it as one of the worst things she’s done, and I believe she considers him her possession more than her slave (which probably isn’t any better), and I think she thinks she cares about him. And she blames Emma for making her kill him, too. Not cool Regina.
5. If I remember correctly, the main reason kissing Emma broke the curse on Graham is because she’s the product of true love and therefore magic. I like to think it helped that he was developing feelings for her—nowhere near true love yet, but much closer than anything he’s ever experienced—and probably also it helped that his wolf brother was hanging around town clearly knowing what was going on. I mean, I headcanon Graham as being basically like FitzChivalry Farseer in terms of his relationship with the wolf, so it stands to reason if his wolf didn’t get properly cursed with new memories, it would be able to nudge him out.
6. Tiny baby Baelfire! Oh my god what a tragic life this kid has to look forward to. I wish we got about 100% more from his perspective. show what it was like for a kid from a medieval fantasy world to stumble into the real world with no parents and no support! (The pit stop in Victorian England with the Darlings did a bit of that, I think.)
7. I enjoy August so much, knowing who he is and what he’s about. He’s obnoxious when you don’t know what his deal is, but when you do? Chef’s kiss. He’s skilled at Not Lying without being even slightly honest. Also, I guess he needed the book to understand the situation and also restore his pages, but I’m not sure how he knew about it in the first place. If the book appeared with him and Emma, how did it end up in town? If the book manifested in town, how did he know about it? It feels like they were trying to imply he came to town at some point in the past, but like. Regina would remember him, surely? I feel fairly confident that the writers didn’t have any origin story for the book in mind and were writing by the seats of their pants about it.
8. Fruit of the Poisonous Tree is not bad but pretty boring. Sydney really could have used a better backstory. Off the top of my head, I feel like it would have been more interesting if he was a spell that gained sentience and was never a person until the curse.
9. I have a whole theory about how genies work and I’m not sure whether it works for all OUAT genies; it basically goes that the enslavement of a genie is intended to be the prepaid price of magic for the wisher, but it takes into account both the wisher’s intentions and the genie’s subconscious perception and judgment on the matter. So if the genie thinks a wish is too big, or impossible, or dumb, the magic will attempt to correct this by coming as close as possible or extracting a separate price or whatever. Which is how most wishes go wrong.
10. I forgot just how damn enjoyable it is to watch shiny crazy Rumple stick his glittery hands in EVERYTHING. I know it eventually got tiresome when no characters other than Rumple and Regina seemed allowed to have backstory with newly introduced fairytales anymore, but in s1 it’s fantastic. Especially knowing that he’s creating elaborate chains of deals for the express purposes of getting the curse made and cast, making Emma exist to break the curse, and putting himself in a position where he’ll be able to make sure she breaks the curse and he can bring in magic and find his son without losing his power. What fun!
I think at think point I can confidently say I still enjoy this show as much as I used to, and expect that to remain literally true as I get further in and get up to the increasing levels of dumb. We’ll see how much dumb I can handle nowadays; for example I deliberately chose to save Skin Deep for a different viewing session so that I would not be faced with starting a session with the incredible cheesiness of Dreamy. But I’m still having tons of fun, and expect to continue at least through Manhattan.
This time I am trying to select a Simpsons gif to go with each episode I watched (but then it really didn’t want to post 6 gifs, so I stopped at 5 episodes/gifs):

OK I did it I watched the Loki S2 finale! Loved it and the season as a whole! My optimism about how S1 could be made to pay off really proved fully justified.
There were a lot of emotional dynamics present in S1 that I pulled out and extrapolated in my fics that were then very much confirmed in s2 (albeit with a totally different plot). I thought they were what made sense and happily the writers agreed!
For example: it makes total sense for Sylvie's greatest needs after S1 to be stability and continuity, and for Agent Loki's greatest needs to be to prove himself as a hero and to do his best for his friends, and given the way it's set up it makes sense for that to involve a fresh start with a new incarnation of the TVA. That logically led me to conclude that they would choose different paths, but I hoped they would remain friends and I think this counts.
I also thought I perceived some UST between Loki and Mobius but wrote it as staying unresolved, for a lot of reasons given their personalities and how the two of them started out in their partnership. The show writers chose the same.
I also think O.B. and his lab and the team that came together to fix the loom really serve a lot of the same purposes in the show as Stark Fortress did in my fic, a place to come back to to fiddle with the technicalities involved in saving the multiverse. (Although that does in fact make it even creepier that O.B. sounds so much like Obie.)
Okay I want to talk a little bit about S2E4 and S2E5 and how I felt watching them! How I understood the plot and what it led me to expect.
The moment Victor Timely walked down those stairs I was like "No! This makes no sense! This is not going to work! Obviously Loki should be the person going out there! You put a human out there with the Loom and they die from being blasted with Time Waves or whatever! They age! You put Loki out there and the worst thing that happens to him is he has to be played by Richard E. Grant!"
So of course I was not all that shocked when Timely died, but it was something of a jumpscare. I appreciated the execution.
Then when Loki was collecting all his friends from their various branches, and that included Sylvie, I was like, this makes no sense as a way to regain a moment in time, because either one of two things is true:
1) any variant of a person will have the same vibration [because these are the versions of his friends that are just hanging around on the timeline, they have no memory of the TVA and are effectively just variants of the people Loki knows] and therefore Loki doesn't actually need Sylvie here because for these purposes they are the Same Damn Person!
2) this isn't going to work because he needs the specific version of these people that remember working at the TVA with him!
so catch me yelling at the screen "You are the same damn person!"
and then Loki goes "it's about the who" and I'm like "Oh okay damn so it's about Loki having Emotions I guess it does make sense!" A Loki's magic really seems to be driven by what they need it to be in the moment and Loki needs his friends. These are the closest versions. It works.
So then the finale. Wow.
I love time loop stories with Loki in them, I have at least a couple of those in my AO3 bookmarks. I saw it coming in the best way, said to the screen like "ooh get ready, it's time loop time!"
Centuries later and he knows so much weird comic book physics (catch me giggling about what a setup for frostiron THAT is)
and Timely is dying a thousand deaths and then he doesn't die and I'm like... hmm...
and then they hit us with TIME LOOP TAKE 2: DOUBLE THE LOKI DOUBLE THE TIME LOOP and he has to fight Sylvie so many times and it's so great and so SAD
and then Loki goes down the stairs and I am straight up like YES WHAT DID I TELL YOU I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR TWO WHOLE EPISODES
And we get alllllllll the power we've been wanting to see. And we get the AoA GoS transformation, sacrifice, holding the cosmos in trust like a bauble.
And I'm watching sad Mobius in the aftermath, and I'm like "aww your girlfriend turned into the moon... that's rough buddy"
(seriously very Princess Yue of you, Loki)
Anyway
Yeah it's good.

(( drabble because quill is my baby;; cw: violence mention, psychosis ))
“They need you.”
That was the mantra. When her brother and cousin disappeared, nobody wanted to find them.
That wasn’t fair. It wasn’t that nobody wanted to find them, just that nobody was willing to figure out where they went, why they went.
They wouldn’t just leave unannounced. She knew them.
Victor would have at least left a note, some dramatic announcement of all the reasons he felt he needed to. Nobody truly knew just how often he wore his heart on his sleeve.
It was easy to believe that Eris wouldn’t tell her family, but Quill knew better. She wouldn’t have just abandoned them so easily. And anyone who knew her as deeply as Quill did would know that all she wanted was love. Why would that motivate her to just disappear?
It didn’t feel right.
So she started digging. When she found Victor’s journal, everything started to become clearer. He was in distress. He was being called to the Ether Plant. It was all the proof she needed to convince Joseph and Rek that something was horribly wrong.
“They need you.”
The three had snuck into the plant at night. She had been the one to find the security office, Rek was the one to find the security footage.
Eris was there. She had been called as well apparently. The three could only watch as she threw herself into the core. A few hours later, Victor appeared as well, following suit.
Joseph had found the anti-magic suits. They suited up and stared at the core from a platform high above. Quill took a deep breath and held it, jumping in first. The two followed, screaming all the way down. She didn’t.
“They need you.”
———
What happened after was foggy in her memory. She remembered saving them. She remembered traveling to a strange land, led by a stranger who fit his surroundings. He had been all too long, jovial, as if the situation wasn’t dire at all.
She had to dig for the rest. The man betraying them, trapping them each in their own separate… the best word for it was “games”. Sick and twisted, but games nonetheless.
Time had been different in there. She was trapped in an eternally looping world of monsters. She couldn’t look them in the eyes. When she did, they lunged at her, wanting to tear her apart atom by atom until she fit what they saw her as. Nothing. She learned to adapt, keeping her head down as she searched for the way back.
“They need you.”
When she escaped, she found that her team had as well. To this day, she has no idea what Rek and Joseph went through. She knew not to ask. They didn’t want to talk about it, which was fair. She didn’t either.
They continued until they found the monsters holding her family hostage. She couldn’t look them in the eyes, but together they ripped their friends away from the monsters’ clutches.
It was foggy, besides that.
All that mattered was that they all got out in one piece. But things had changed. Victor and Eris withdrew a bit, but they all now had this strange bond. They were the only ones who truly understood.
———
A few years later, she dropped out of college and went home. It hurt, but it was an easy choice.
“They need you.”
They were happy to have her back. She knew. Victor was worried, of course. How could she just give up her dreams?
She told him college wasn’t for her, which wasn’t a total lie. Nobody there understood. She could hardly look any of her classmates in the eyes, knowing that if she did, they would lunge and try to tear her to pieces. But most of all…
She knew. She knew she was the thing that could keep them all together. They needed her. She needed them.

Zoro doesn’t flirt
I wrote my first ZoNami story just over a year ago and I wanted to post something around that time again (okay, so I’m actually late. This was originally planned for the 25th) to celebrate the milestone!
Sanji being jealous is a guilty pleasure of mine but I also like him being a total bro and matchmaker. Like yeah, he’ll nudge Zoro in the right direction, but he’ll also make fun of him whilst he does it. Takes his shots where he can get ‘em.
Summary: Roronoa Zoro, the fearsome pirate hunter, bounty of 320,000,000, does not flirt.
Except he totally does, and it takes a guy talk with Sanji of all people for him to admit it. Kinda. Rating: T
This can also be found on AO3 and FFN.
Enjoy.
“It’s adorable, you know,” Sanji trailed off, interrupting the silence in the kitchen. He didn’t turn to look at Zoro, who he knew was at the table behind him, he just carried on drying the dish in his hands. But he knew it would be enough to engage the other man.
There was a brief silence and Sanji wondered for a moment if he was wrong, but then Zoro was grunting at him.
“What was that?” Sanji threw over his shoulder, still not turning. He’d heard Zoro just fine, knew that grunt was for him to elaborate, but he knew it’d get under his skin. He can almost see the scowl that would inevitably be on his face without having to turn around.
“What’s adorable?” Zoro bit out and his tone’s suggesting he knows that whatever Sanji’s about to say is going to piss him off.
Sanji turned then, deciding that he wanted to see Zoro’s face for what he was about to say. His previous thought was right, there’s apprehension but also irritation rolling off of Zoro from the kitchen table where he’s sat.
“Your attempts at flirting with Nami-san.” Sanji’s lips curling into an infuriating smirk.
Zoro’s face went blank and Sanji’s almost disappointed at the lack of expression, felt like he’d been cheated out of his prize for a second before Zoro’s lips are curling downwards to match the deep scowl forming on his face
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Zoro said it with such conviction that to the untrained they would believe him, but Sanji did know him.
He could see right through it.
“Oh so your little scene at the table this morning during breakfast wasn’t flirting?”
Zoro looked incredulous. “It was an argument! What kind of idiot are you?”
“Normal people don’t enjoy ‘arguments’-” Sanji made air quotes then and Zoro’s grinding his teeth at being mocked- “or seek them out with the person that is apparently ‘the devil itself’,” Sanji finished.
“I do not enjoy them!” Apparently all Zoro has in his arsenal is denials and it’s all the confirmation Sanji needed. Sanji just wondered how long he’d be able to keep this up before it ended it an all-out brawl.
You can only corner a wild animal for so long…
“Only because you lose all the time, but you love the attention. Everyone can see it.”
Teeth clenched? Check. Knuckles white and gripping his sake? Check. Tense? Check. Silent? Check.
He’d achieved that sooner than expected.
Time to deliver the final blow.
Sanji dramatically sighed and turned to the side, to face away from Zoro. He looked at him from the corner of his eyes as he said:
“Roronoa Zoro, esteemed pirate hunter, whose name brings fear to those that hear it,” he has to resist gagging as he said it, no doubt adding to Zoro’s already inflated ego. It’s all worth it though with his next words, “can’t flirt like a grown man. It’s kind of pathetic really.”
The response is immediate, Zoro’s chair falling back with a clang on the hardwood floor as he shot to his feet, his hands reaching to rest on the hilt of his swords.
“You wanna go, is that it?”
“Running from the conversation like a coward? Poor Nami-san, having to deal with a brute like you,” Sanji goaded, even though he was already pushing away from the counter to take a step towards Zoro. “A brute with no flirting skills or ways to woo a woman.”
“I don’t flirt!”
Before anything could escalate further, the kitchen door’s swinging open and the very person they’re talking about entered. Zoro’s throwing him a foul look which screamed ‘keep your trap shut’. Sanji ignored it as his eyes zeroed in on Nami.
“Nami-san!” Sanji greeted cheerfully as she walked towards him, paying no mind to Zoro at the table or the fight about to break out. From the table, Zoro’s watching her like a hawk.
“Sanji-kun,” Nami greeting back, but left it at that as she stood in front of the fridge, fingers gracefully sliding around the combination lock with practiced ease to reach in and retrieve a drink.
“Nami, grab me one too,” Zoro called over to her just as she was about to close the fridge. Sanji frowned at his lack of manners but Nami beat him to it.
“What’s the magic word?” She teased; the fridge door still cracked open. Only Sanji, Nami and Robin knew the combination and between Sanji and Nami, Zoro had a higher chance of getting a drink relatively easily with her… and he could flirt with her, of course.
He snorted before firing back, “I’ll remember that when you start barking orders.”
And just like that, it was like Sanji wasn’t even in the room anymore. They were both swept up in their bickering (flirting) that he was now openly watching the scene before him and neither took notice. He wasn’t even subtle about it; he’d put his pan down, his arms crossed and leaned back on the counter to watch the show.
It was an interesting watch.
You could tell a lot more with these two with what was said physically than verbally. And right now it’s screaming in the quiet kitchen. The way Nami’s leaning over Zoro where he’s sat, berating him as he moved the beer just out of her reach, despite her being nice enough to bring it over.
“How old are you?” Nami complained as her fingertips brushed the bottle, then Zoro’s moving it out of reach again.
“Sounds like loser talk right there,” he laughed and it sounded cold and cruel, at least to Sanji’s ears anyway, but his expression held a softness that is normally reserved for her (and Chopper, but that’s a given at this point).
To anyone else that wasn’t on this ship, it’d look like they were genuinely arguing. Both frowning now that Nami’s reclaimed her drink and voices gradually growing louder in their verbal ping pong match, but behind that, you could see Zoro’s eye lighting up as he leaned in as they went back and forth. He was enjoying this and Sanji was instantly reminded of that little boy that wouldn’t leave the girl alone, despite saying he didn’t like her. Except that girl enjoyed it too and gave as good as she got.
And then Zoro brought Sanji’s metaphor to life and actually tugged on Nami’s braid. He wasn’t even keeping up with their conversation anymore, it moved so quickly sometimes, so he’s not sure why Zoro did it. But it brought a blush to Nami’s face that has Zoro smirking in triumph before they’re launching into a new argument, one he does take interest in because she’s giving him shit about his hair and he wanted some of that material for later.
It seemed after all of that, Nami had come out the victor on their verbal spar but Zoro wasn’t one to go down easily. He got up and crowded into her space, something that wasn’t hard as they’d already been leaning into each other, and the atmosphere thickened as the space between their faces started to disappear and even Sanji held his breath- even though he wasn’t directly involved. It looked like he was going to kiss her, the way he was staring her down, his gaze flicking around her face, and despite inwardly thinking about how lame that would be (where’s the candlelight dinner?), he would still begrudgingly admire it because he honestly had no idea where Zoro suddenly got the balls from after all his pussyfooting.
That thought quickly came shattering down, along with the atmosphere, when he instead swiped the drink from her hands and took a long swig, his own drink abandoned next to him on the table. Sanji wanted to groan because honestly, what an idiot, but he stayed silent just so he could see how this played out.
It played out pretty much how Sanji expected.
Nami looked stunned and then in the next moment outraged, probably not at him drinking her drink (he’d seen them share many times before- something he might bring up, actually, when this had finished), but at being one upped. Sanji had seen her face just moments ago, she’d expected something far different from that, and no doubt the embarrassment was washing over her now.
She spluttered a few times, mouth trying to form words until she gave up. When no words appeared, she huffed instead, flicked her braid over her shoulder and turned on her heel to storm out of the kitchen.
Zoro grinned viciously as he watched her leave, his gaze straying much further south than it probably should.
It’s silent in the kitchen after the door closed, Zoro’s gone back to drinking his own drink and ignoring Sanji like their previous conversation hadn’t happened.
As if Zoro’s getting off the hook that easily.
“So… you don’t flirt, huh?”
Zoro doesn’t grace him with a response, at this point what can he say? Can hardly keep denying it after that show, so he settled for glaring at him fiercely instead. Something that didn’t affect Sanji in the slightest. He’d survived his biological brothers growing up, this is nothing.
“It’s…. giving as good as I get.” Zoro finally settled for, but even he doesn’t look convinced at that one.
Sanji gave him a bland look. “So flirting?”
Zoro’s face is pinched painfully and it’s because he’s boxed into a corner. There’s no way to escape the inevitable and with a tight jaw he’s admitting, “Fine. I’m ‘flirting’.” He added the air quotations sarcastically, half giving in but still being stubborn and Sanji begrudgingly accepted that. Anymore pushing and it really will end in a fight.
“So, now that we’ve established you are flirting- don’t give me that look shithead, you are, and you know it-” Sanji pointed his finger as him but Zoro didn’t give anything other than a sour expression so he continued- “what’re you going to do about it?”
There’s a long pause and it’s because Zoro’s currently warring between continuing the stubborn streak and giving in.
For once, he picked the right direction, because they both knew Sanji would keep going until he gave anyway.
“I can’t believe I’m talking to you about this,” Zoro muttered and sighed, running his hand through his hair trying to stall. “I have a plan; I’m doing things at my own pace.”
“Any chance this plan happens before we find One Piece?”
“I don’t want to rush anything.”
“Strange, you’re not normally such a coward. If anything, you rush in like a moron.”
“You can stand there and pretend all you like but you’re no different, pervert.”
Sanji rolled his eyes in response. But then, a thought came to mind, something that Zoro had said just before was bothering him and it sounded far too vague. “Hang on, just to be thorough, what exactly is your plan?”
Zoro shrugged as he responded, “Wait for the right moment.”
What an idiot. Truly. Nami must have done something in her past life to be stuck with him. He’d pray for her.
“That’s not a plan!”
“I don’t plan anything normally and it turns out alright,” Zoro said simply.
“You can’t just fight and stumble your way through this, you idiot!”
Zoro turned to him then, placing his empty drink to the side. “Alright then self-proclaimed ladies’ man, what plan do you have? Huh?”
Sanji opened his mouth to respond but Zoro interrupted-
“I swear, if you say candlelight dinner.”
Sanji’s shoulders sagged and Zoro’s laughing nastily.
“Oh, not so easy is it? And you call yourself a lady’s man, really is all hot wind in the end, huh?”
As much as Sanji knew how to get under Zoro’s skin, it unfortunately worked the other way around and Zoro’s comment has Sanji biting down his temper, his leg begging him to stop holding back. So instead, he chose to ignore that, be the bigger man. And maybe soothed himself with the thought of hiding one of Zoro’s weights later.
Sanji pushed away from the counter to distract himself, walking through the kitchen to open the fridge. He could hear Zoro playing with his drink behind his back, even though it’s empty and then Sanji’s grabbing another drink before walking over to the table. He placed it down in front of Zoro but doesn’t let go as he reached for it.
Zoro raised an eyebrow at the gesture.
“I don’t know what you’re really worried about and don’t deny that you’re not, but Nami’s interested.” Then he’s releasing the drink for Zoro to take.
Zoro’s gave him a sharp look. “She say something?”
Sanji took a step back to lean on the counter in the dining room. “She doesn’t have to. When you have people skills, you can see these sorts of things. Maybe add it to your to do list, along with playing with your swords.”
Zoro snorted then and for the first time since he entered the kitchen, it’s not in anger, or annoyance but in amusement and Sanji’s chuckling as well. Maybe not at his own words but at this situation. He never would have put money on his evening ending up like this.
They’re back in silence again but that’s fine, because Sanji’s pretty sure he’s got his point across. Zoro had half-heartedly admitted he was flirting and that he was going to do something about it. Good enough.
But then Zoro surprised him by speaking, offering up information that wasn’t asked for.
“I don’t want to ruin what we have.”
Sanji’s almost speechless and his face is flabbergasted by Zoro’s quiet words. Something that he quickly got under control because if Zoro saw it, he would get cagey instantly and that would be the end. He’d never be able to touch on this again.
For a second, he hesitated, unsure what to say. He didn’t think Zoro was capable of doubting himself. He was normally such a smug bastard. This didn’t sit right with Sanji and its then that he found the words.
“I didn’t realise Perona was around, maybe it was those two years you spent with her. You sound like you already lost. How depressing.” It’s tough love but he’s sure that’s what’s needed. Then again, he wasn’t sure it was possible for him to give Zoro anything else.
Zoro said nothing and that doesn’t seem like a good thing either. He dug deep for the next one, “You can’t move forward if you don’t move at all.”
“You get that from a fortune cookie?”
Snark is better than silence, even if it does piss him off. “Seemed to work, what does that say about you?”
They’re glaring at each other now and they’re just about to tip over the edge when a weird look crossed Zoro’s face.
“Wait, why are you sticking your nose in anyway? You’re nosey at the best of times but this is a step too far for you.”
Oh shit. Time’s up. Play it cool.
“Like you said, I’m being nosey.”
Zoro’s eyes narrowed. “Bullshit-” and cruel smirk crossed Zoro’s face as he leaned back- “you’re pushing too hard and don’t think I don’t see your twitching leg. You’re holding yourself back.”
“I care about Nami-san and, unfortunately, you’re a part of that now.” Good save, Sanji, go with that. He mentally clapped himself on the back.
“Kinda sounds like you care about me too.”
“Don’t push your luck.” Sanji pointed a finger at him threateningly but it did nothing other than add to the infuriating expression on Zoro’s face. It’s superiority and it grinds Sanji.
“What other explanation would you like to give it? Why not just talk to Nami if it’s for her.”
God damn it. What a prick. He refused to say anything and that’s all Zoro really needed to hear as he chuckled and finished the last of his second drink.
“It’s painful to watch you two dance around each other,” is all Sanji supplied. It basically confirmed what Zoro said but he’s not saying anything other than that. He refused.
“That bad?” Zoro grimaced.
Sanji smirked. “There’s currently a betting pool.”
Zoro groaned loudly, head tipped back. “Fucking course there is. Meddling idiots, the lot of you.”
“She won’t say no. Well, as long as you ask like an adult and not pull on her hair like a child.” Sanji shook his head. “You literally did it earlier too, where did you pick this up from?”
“Got her attention, didn’t it?” Zoro looked far more satisfied than he deserved to look.
“I don’t want to badmouth Nami-san, but she normally has such exquisite taste, so I really wonder what happened here.” Sanji’s hand wafting in Zoro’s direction.
“Seriously though, stop hanging around. I know you’re worried about your friendship but give Nami some more credit-” Sanji paused, mulling over whether to say anything further, was this going too far? Ah, screw it, he got this far- “She won’t say no.”
Zoro gave him an assessing look, like he was trying to see if the other man was messing with him before he nodded, “Got it.” He stood from his seat then, apparently done with the conversation once and for all.
Sanji stopped him before he could turn to leave, “Let’s agree to never do this again.”
“Agreed.”
And just because Sanji’s an absolute shit that cannot resist, “Unless, of course, you need advice about sex because you look hopeless in that department.”
“You piece of shit!”
And his time was truly up then, something that Sanji welcomed because he was actually starting to feel friendlytowards the moss head.
“What do we have here? Bro bonding and I wasn’t invited?!”
Both Zoro and Sanji whipped their heads towards the new voice, stopping dead in their tracks and gaped. Because there stood Franky in the doorway of the kitchen, one hand on his hip and the other lifting his glasses, like he couldn’t believe the sight in front of him.
How either of them missed him they weren’t sure, nor did they know just how long he’d been standing there… or what he’d heard.
“We are not bonding!”
“What’s wrong with you.”
--------------------------
Sorry to ZoSan shippers, no hate whatsoever, but in my eyes, they have such brotherly sibling energy. I’d wanted to write this for a while.
As always, forgive any errors.
Happy new year everyone!

Here You Have Watches, There We Have Time

Tumblr media
The landscape of northern Mali.
During his years spent in the Sahara Desert, Charles de Foucuald (1858-1916) was a solitary European and Christian presence among the indigenous Tuaregs of the region. Wanting to know them better, Charles learned their stories and poetry and worked on a French-Tuareg dictionary. He drew detailed pictures of everyday Tuareg life, from musical instruments to hair braids. He wanted to know the soul of the people. He wanted to be their brother.
Rene Voillaume, founder of the Little Brothers of Jesus, said that Charles joined “his total dedication to the welfare of the Tuaregs [with] an attentive, realistic charity and a very strong sense of justice.” Loving the Tuaregs was Charles’ school for loving God.
Tumblr media
Charles and Ouksem Ag Chikkat, a Tuareg friend.
The Tuaregs, these nomadic tribes with their distinctive blue robes, remain a mystery to many people today. Below is an interview with a modern-day Tuareg living in France. Moussa Ag Assarid was born in northern Mali around 1975. The desire for additional education led him to France in 1999. He has worked as a journalist, actor, tour guide, and writer. Moussa wrote an autobiographical account of his journeys in a book, There are No Traffic Jams in the Desert: Chronicles of a Tuareg in France.
Moussa was interviewed in 2011 by Victor M. Amelain for ARIEL Magazine (the link to the original article is below). This candid conversation gives insight into the world-view of a people who were important in the life of Charles, the spiritual father of the Joseph House and the Little Sisters.
An interview with Moussa Ag Assarid:
I don’t know my age. I was born in the Sahara desert, with no papers! I was born in a nomadic camp of Tuaregs, between Timbuktu and Gao, in the north of Mali. I have been a shepherd of camels, goats, sheep and cows for my father. Today I study Management in the University of Montpellier. I am a bachelor. I serve as an advocate for the Tuareg shepherds.
What a beautiful headdress!
It is a fine cotton fabric: it allows me to cover my face in the desert when the wind blows sand, and allows me to continue to see and to breathe through it.
It is a beautiful blue color.
We Tuaregs have long been called “the blue men” because of this color. Interestingly the fabric loses the color and transfers some of the blue ink onto our skin.
How do you get this intense blue?
From a plant called indigo, mixed with other natural pigments. The blue, for the Tuaregs, is the color of the world.
Why?
It’s the dominant color, of the sky, the roof of our home.
Who are the Tuareg?
Tuareg means ‘abandoned’, because we are an old nomadic tribe of the desert. We are lonely and proud: masters of the desert, they call us. Our ethnic group is Amazigh (or Berber), and our alphabet is the Tifinagh.
How many are there of you?
Approximately three million, the majority still are nomadic. But the population is decreasing. A wise man said it is necessary for a tribe to disappear to realize they existed. I am working to preserve this tribe.
What do they do for a living?
We shepherd camels, goats, sheep, cows and donkeys in an infinite kingdom of silence.
Is the desert really so silent?
If you are on your own in that silence you hear your heart beat. There is no better place to meet yourself.
What memories do you have of your childhood in the desert?
I wake up with the sun. The goats of my father are there. They give us milk and meat, and we take them were there is water and grass. My great-grandfather did it, and my grandfather, and my father, and me. There was nothing else in the world than that, and I was very happy!
Really? It doesn’t sound very exciting.
It is. At the age of seven you can go alone away from the compound, and for this you are taught the important things—to smell the air, to listen, to see, to orient with the sun and the stars…and to be guided by the camel if you get lost. He will take you where there is water.
This sounds like valuable knowledge, no doubt.
Everything is simple and profound there. There are very few things, and each one has enormous value.
So that world and this one are very different.
There, every little thing gives happiness. Every touch is valuable. We feel great joy just by touching each other, being together. There, nobody dreams of becoming, because everybody already is.
What shocked you most on your first trip to Europe?
I saw people running in the airport. In the desert you only run if a sandstorm is approaching! It scared me, of course.
They were going after their baggage.
Yes, that was it. I also saw signs with naked women. Why this lack of respect for the woman? I wondered. Then at the hotel I saw the first faucet of my life: I saw the water run and wanted to cry.
Because of the waste, the abundance?
Every day of my life had been involved in seeking water. When I see the ornamental fountains here and there, I still feel an intense pain.
Why?
In the early 90s there was a big drought, animals died, and we became sick. I was about twelve years old and my mother died. She was everything to me! She used to tell me stories and taught me to tell stories. She taught me to be myself.
What happened to your family?
I persuaded my father to let me go to school. Every day I walked fifteen kilometers, until one teacher gave me a bed to sleep in and a woman gave me food when I walked by her house. I then understood what was happening; my mother was helping me.
Where did you get interested in school?
A few years before the Paris-Dakar motor rally came through the compound and a journalist dropped a book from her backpack. I picked it up and gave it to her. She gave it to me and talked to me about that book: “The Little Prince.” I promised myself that I would be able to read it one day.
And you did.
Yes, and because of that I won a scholarship to study in France.
A Tuareg going to college!
Ah, what I most miss here is the camel milk. And the wood fires. And walking barefoot on the warm sand. And the stars. We watched them every night, every star is different, just as every goat is different. Here, in the evenings, you watch TV.
That is true. What do you dislike the most here?
You have everything, and it is still not enough for you. You complain. In France people complain all the time! You chain yourself to a bank; everyone is anxious to have things, to have possessions. Everyone is in a rush. In the desert there are no traffic jams, and do you know why? Because there nobody is interested in getting ahead of other people.
Tumblr media
Two Tuareg men in Mali.
Tell me about a moment of deep happiness for you in the desert.
It happens every day, two hours before sunset. The heat decreases, there is still no cold air, and men and animals slowly return to the compound, and their profiles are painted against a sky that is pink, blue, red, yellow, green.
That sounds fascinating.
It’s a magical moment. We all get into the tents and we boil tea. Sitting in silence we listen to the sound of the boiling water. We are immersed in calmness, with our the heart beating to the rhythm of the boiling water, potta potta potta……
How peaceful.
Yes…here you have watches; there, we have time.

My ridiculous fandoms:
I know, multifandom much?!
I have a LOT, although I will post mostly AoS shit. (I don’t make things for all of these, don’t worry lmao, mostly I just spectate and sometimes reblog stuff.) Up to know I’ve put them all up in my bio, but I’ve decided only to do the top, say, three, otherwise it just gets wayyy too long. However, I’m putting it all here, so that anyone, if they feel so inclined, can see what shit I’m interested in.
I will also be putting a bunch of my favourite quotes from the shows there, because, well, I’m a total nerd xD.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
”With great responsibility comes...a ton of weird shit you are not prepared to deal with.”
“The steps you take don’t have to be big, they just need to take you in the right direction.”
“Sometimes, making a difference means being different.”
Star Trek: Discovery (sauce)
“You had me at unsanctioned mission...”
“Deal with me, universe, while I deal with her.”
And...(though this is not a real quote, exactly) Sauce Afirma Sauce Eterna. :)
Derry Girls
“If anyone is feeling anxious, worried or maybe you just want a chat, please, please do not come crying to me.”
“We got the gist. They ran out of spuds, everyone was raging.”
“Slainte, motherfuckers!”
Julie and the Phantoms
“Chill man, Street Dogs haven’t killed us yet.”
“I cried in a room for twenty-five years and didn’t get a single hug from either of you!”
“Oh. She said oh. That’s what you say if you get socks on your birthday, not when you’re invited to join the most epic band ever!”
Brigerton
“Having a nice face and pleasant hair is not an accomplishment. Do you know what is an accomplishment? Attending university! If I were a man, I could do that, you know.”
“You would actually have to be interesting for me to bother spying on you"
“All is fair in love and war but some battles leave no victor, only a trail of broken hearts that makes us wonder if the price we pay is ever worth the fight.”
Simon Snow series
“You were the sun, and I was crashing into you.”
“Sharing a room with the person you want most is like sharing a room with an open fire. He's constantly drawing you in. And you're constantly stepping too close. And you know it's not good--that there is no good--that there's absolutely nothing that can ever come of it. But you do it anyway. And then... Well. Then you burn.”
“I'd cross every line for him. I'm in love with him. And he likes this better than fighting.”
Avatar the Last Airbender
“Life happens wherever you are, whether you make it or not.”
“My first girlfriend turned into the moon.” “That’s rough buddy.”
“Why am I so bad at being good?”
Harry Potter
“It’s leviOsa, not levioSA!”
“I solemnly swear I am up to no good.”
“Things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end, if not always in the way we expect.”
The Queen’s Gambit
"I Would Say It Is Much Easier To Play Chess Without The Burden Of An Adam's Apple."
"I'm Not Your Guardian Angel. I'm Not Here To Save You. Hell, I Can Barely Save Me."
“Again?”
Once Upon A Time
"That's How You Know You've Really Got A Home. 'Cause When You Leave It ...There's This Feeling You Can't Shake. You Just Miss It."
"Sometimes The Best Teacup Is Chipped."
"All Magic Comes With A Price."
The Good Place
“I’m just not a ‘new experience’ kind of guy. My comfort zone is basically like, that chair, and honestly? The arms are a little sharp.”
“What matters isn’t if people are good or bad. What matters is, if they’re trying to be better today than they were yesterday. You asked me where my hope comes from? That’s my answer.”
“We do nothing. We hope that our early successes make up for the embarrassing mess we’ve become. Like Facebook. Or America.”
Community
"We'll definitely be back next year. If not, it'll be because an asteroid has destroyed all human civilization. And that's canon."
"GAAYYY MARRIAAGEE!!"
“Our Captain was killed on duty tonight. Leaves behind two kids and a pregnant wife. So you’re missing a Batman DVD?”
Zoey’s Extraoridnary Playlist
“Who wants some freshly delivered, slightly cold, mediocre pizza?”
“Songs are all just an expression of our deepest wants and desires… Joy, pain, heartbreak, yearning, forgiveness, revenge. Good music can make you feel things you can’t express in words.”
“I just found out a guy I like is engaged, and I am either going totally nuts, or I suddenly can hear people’s innermost thoughts as big musical numbers.”
The Old Gaurd
“Depends on the century.”
“You're an incurable romantic...”
“SHIIIIIIIIITTTTTT!”
Merlin (BBC)
“Merlin should take some of the credit, turns out he’s not always entirely stupid.”
“Are you saying I’m fat?” -Arthur | “No, I’m saying the belt is one hole shy away from perfection.”
Artemis Fowl
“I am the future queen of this world, at the very least. You may refer to me as Mistress Koboi for the next five minutes. After that you may refer to me as Aaaaarrrrgh, hold your throat, die screaming, and so on.”
“We lost the crickets,” she said. “Even you can’t make that sound tough.”
“I never tell anyone exactly how clever I am. They would be too scared.”
How To Train Your Dragon
“ Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile!”
“You just gestured to all of me.”
“Toothless, what are you doing? We need her to LIKE us!”
The Dragon Prince
“I’m just a kid. I haven’t fought in any battles. I haven’t read many books of wisdom. I haven’t gone through the things that made my father the king he was. So I’ve decided that I don’t have to be the king my father was. My father made choices to keep fighting battles that started hundreds of years before he was born. To punish enemies for crimes their parents committed! I don’t want to be that kind of king.”
“The dragon prince is alive! And he’s really cute, by the way.”
“What? WHAAAAAAAT!”
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
“Would it save you a lot of time if I just gave up and went mad now?”
“A towel, [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.”
“For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen.”
“The Answer to the Great Question... Of Life, the Universe and Everything... Is... Forty-two,' said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm.”
“Ford... you're turning into a penguin. Stop it.”
sorry for the five I couldn’t choose only 3
But there you have it, my insane, ridiculous, way-too-many fandoms. For anyone who cares. ;)

1, 7, 25 for the fanfic end of year ask :)
001. favorite fic you wrote this year i have a soft spot for take my hand (take my everything) which was the first fic i wrote this year! and kind of the first step back into writing creatively on something new that wasn’t the 7 year monster sterek fic. also my first foray into 9-1-1 fic and was just a lot of fun!
007. longest completed fic you wrote this year the longest fic i wrote was my second for the year! so show me (family) wound up being around 16k+ for 9-1-1 which kind of burst out of me over the course of one 48 hour window unlike take my hand which took a few weeks to crank out.
025. a fic you read this year you would recommend everyone read SO MANY FICS DUDE!!! i’m gonna rec a couple, some that i re-read this year and some that i discovered for the first time, all from a variety of fandoms. BUT heads up, you didn’t specify a fandom so it’s gonna be a little scattered. also someone else sent me this same question but specified 9-1-1, so i’m gonna reserve those recs for that ask. GET READY!!
and this, your living kiss by opal_bullets (7/7 | 84k+ | M) destiel; AU: college/university; john winchester’s A+ parenting; angst with a happy ending
only a very few people in the world know that the celebrated and reclusive poet jack allen is just kansas mechanic dean winchester, a high school dropout with a few bucks to his name. not that it matters anymore; life has left him so wrung out he never wants to pick up another pen.
until, that is, a string of coincidences leads dean to auditing a poetry course with one dr. castiel novak. the professor is wildly intelligent, devastatingly handsome...and just so happens to be academia’s foremost expert on the poetry of jack allen.
note: i discovered this fic back in the pre-pandemic times of feb 2020 and i’ve read this fic TWICE since, leaving a lengthy comment each time. the poetry in the fic itself is stunningly gorgeous and i have a habit of reading it out loud to myself while reading bc it begs to be heard. this fic is seriously beautiful and makes me want to read all the poet!dean au’s out there in the world. unfortunately there aren’t that many so i just keep coming back to this well. i don’t think i can express enough how much i love this fic.
lost time by ARCurren (105/105 | 350k+ | T)  bransonxsybil; AU: canon divergent; outsider POVs; original characters; slow burn
the story of a free spirit who was asked to give up the man she loved for a system she didn’t believe in and what happened next. AU after 3.04.
note: did i think, when i stumbled across this fic years ago, that it would wind up being one of my all time favorites that i return to time and again to re-read? never. did i re-read it for like the dozenth time this year?? 110%. this fic is everything i want from fanfiction—it’s beautifully written, expands on canon, and shows me all the hidden moments the cameras never did (not to mention it’s historically accurate and delves deep into irish politics of the time). the first third or so of this fic is all about tom and sybil’s slow burn romance at downton, but the fic really bursts into its own when we follow the two to dublin and get introduced to all of the author’s deliciously detailed oc’s. heads up warning: this fic was never officially completed, though the final chapter is a beautifully written summary of the final arc of the fic. even so, it’s fucking worth it.
misfire by mothlights & unpossible (6/6 | 28k+ | T) sterek; time travel; angst with a happy ending; alive hale family; magic; alternating POV
“the debt must be repaid,” she says, and it has the weight of a vow. the words resonate through him, ringing through his ribcage and the bones of his jaw, and stiles loses his breath and maybe his grip on reality because she draws herself upright and where there had once stood a supermodel-level MILK now there is galadriel’s much hotter older sister, a presence of unmistakable power in their ordinary, smells-vaguely-of-thai-takeout hallway.
“oh shit,” stiles says.
note: this fic is the first in the misfire ‘verse and i need you to understand that it literally broke me when i binge read these fics a month or so ago. i am a sucker for a solid time travel fic especially bc there are such few good ones in fandom. but this gets at the heart of it all by exploring the idea of stiles getting the chance to save derek’s family and taking it...after he and derek are romantically together in his true timeline and then actually dealing with the ramifications of how that alters everything and how stiles survives in this new present where he and derek are virtual strangers. everyone should definitely read this, but you should also know that i fucking sobbed while reading the sequel (which also has a happy ending, but really digs deep into the nitty gritty angst of the repercussions).
map of the world by seperis (11/11 | 154k+ | M)  destiel; end!verse; alternate universe; canon divergent; original characters; slow burn
the world’s already over and they’re already dead. all they’re doing now is marking time until the end.
note: look, if you don’t know about down to agincourt by @seperis, what are you doing with your life?? the series is over 1M+ words so far, the fic author is on book 4 out of a planned 8, and it’s fucking phenomenal. i know i’ve tagged a couple of these recs as slow burn but...this is the slowest slow burn to ever burn. canon!dean travels back into the end!verse timeline just as lucifer kills dean and somehow cas made it out alive and has to keep dean safe while he learns to become his end!verse counterpoint. the world building in this series is intense and i cannot recommend it enough. i’m still in the midst of my re-read bc it’s SUCH an endeavor but i highly recommend it to everybody.
invictus by ellanasan (116/116 | 355+ | M) hayffie; au: alive abernathy family; pre-hunger games; canon prostitution; slow burn
“so then, before i can even think about doing something stupid like trying to stab him with his fucking golden paperknife, he gives me a choice, see?” haymitch continued, almost detached. “either i play nice like all the other victors or he’ll kill my family. i could either become his puppet—greatest punishment he could give me, according to him—or i could become the example.”
AU in which haymitch’s family lives.
note: hello, have you ever wondered what the hunger games series would be like if haymitch’s family were alive? i fucking hadn’t until 2 years ago when i stumbled across this fic and fell head over heels in love with this ship. @ellanainthetardis is my go to hunger games fic writer for anything exploring canon and i’m obsessed with anything she writes about the OG victors pre-canon (finnick, joanna, chaff, etc). this fic is just 300k+ exploring that world and all the intricate details of how cruel the games could really be. HIGHLY recommend. i definitely re-read it this fall when i needed a pick me up.
don’t know what i’m supposed to do (haunted by the ghost of you) by crazyassmurdererwall (1/1 | 30k+ | T) sterek; canon divergent; angst with a happy ending; ghosts; stiles POV
stiles sees dead people. yep. seriously.
(he’s got this. he’s totally got this. so what if one of them is derek’s mom?)
note: did you know that @crazyassmurdererwall is one of my all time favorite people? and that she’s wicked talented? and that in our spare time she’ll send me a billion fic ideas that are amazing and i get to hear all the intricate details of her plot bunnies? but i digress. this fic is one of my all time fave sterek fics i’ve re-read it sooo many times. there’s just something about the heartache and stiles’ insecurity and the way he tries to shoulder it all on his own. and then there’s alli’s brilliant writing, the way she weaves through a scene and paints a picture just so and manages to tug at your heart strings with her precise word choice. there’s some amazing world building in this fic as it explores this other facet of the supernatural that canon teen wolf never touched upon, and i’m so grateful for that bc alli is the only one who should be allowed to write about ghosts and teen wolf together.
lagavulin and guinness by snarfle (10/10 | 163k+ | explicit) hartwin; slow burn; PTSD; suicidal thoughts; graphic depictions of violence; domestic abuse
plenty of people had looked down on eggsy throughout his life. he had gotten fairly used to it. didn’t mean it was fair, but he knew how these things worked. what really sucked was that the new arthur was worse than the old one.
“eggsy grimaced. he didn’t know how to explain to harry—who seemed like he hadn’t been discriminated against a day in his life—that the new arthur kept giving him what amounted to suicide missions, and that he was currently bleeding out in a warehouse because of the deliberately bad intel she had given him.”
also featuring: dean is harder to get rid of than eggsy thought, his mum is going off the deep end, there are way too many nefarious plots in play, and eggsy is really beginning to wish that harry would stop holding his hand and kiss him instead.
note: look, i know i recced this literally less than a week ago but i ALSO stayed up til 5AM re-reading this last night and it was a-m-a-z-i-n-g. i was on a bit of a kingsman kick earlier this year, so i’ve actually re-read this fic TWICE so far in 2020. i will give you a serious warning in that this fic delves deep into domestic abuse through the lens of a variety of different relationships. it also explores the potential for abuse in hartwin, bc this fic is one of the few that actually commits to the fact that they’re literal spies who murder people. actively. a lot. but seriously, this fic is one of my fave in the fandom and i STRONGLY recommend it.
waste of breath by bryrosea (1/1 | 22k+ | M) loganxveronica; canon compliant; missing scenes; navy; past child abuse
logan echolls, the nine years, and the navy.
note: bryrosea has an obscene number of amazing logan and veronica fics (her canon divergent series stay with me is another i re-read this year), but i’ve found myself returning to this fic a lot over the years. i’m a sucker for canon compliant fics that explore the missing scenes in between canon and this fic hits all the right buttons by diving deep into how logan echolls went from being a trash fire at hearst college at the end of s3 to being a decorated navy pilot by the movie. it explores logan seeking out therapy and making a life for himself that he can be proud of, all while pining after the girl who got away. and bc this author is amazing, she followed it up with a sequel from veronica’s point of view in the series done by only me.
the law of equivalent exchange by awed_frog (8/8 | 60k+ | M) destiel; POV castiel; pre-canon; post-canon; canon compliant; immortality; reincarnation
“and what’s the point of it?”
“of love? there isn’t one. loving is its own purpose.”
note: i mean??? i don’t really know what to say except that this is one of the truly most beautiful fics i have ever read. it follows castiel through time as he meets different reincarnations of sam and dean across history and falls ever more deeply in love. it is achingly tender and so ecstatically written that i die just thinking about it. and that summary? i mean. holy fuck break my heart why don’t you? i don’t know how i missed out on this fic for so long since it was published in 2015 but i only learned about it for the first time back in july and it was. life changing?? when the fic finally reaches the canon timeline and he meets THIS dean it’s peak yearning. 10/10 will read again.
ahead in the count by elisela (17/17 | 50k+ | E) sterek; AU: sports; pitcher!stiles; teacher!derek; long distance relationship; getting together
“yankee fan,” derek says, laughing when stiles makes a disgusted face. “the bronx bombers, stiles, you can’t be a new yorker and—”
“stop talking right now,” stiles sighs, shaking his head. “i can’t believe i still want to kiss you after that,” he says, pulling derek in by his coat. “this is making me rethink everything.”
“i’ll never watch them again,” derek promises, and stiles laughs against his mouth.
or: stiles is a starting pitcher for the NY mets when he meets and falls in love with derek. derek doesn’t know.
note: i read SO MANY of @elisela’s 911 fics this summer, which i loved, and then she got into teen wolf and started writing sterek and i just about died. this fic is amazing, one of my fave sterek AU’s that i’ve read in years. it’s just the right amount of drama and angst and fluff filled with all the joys of miscommunication and character relationships that makes reading sterek such a joy. reading this fic and finding out eli needed fic recs pushed me to dive back in to reading sterek fics for a bit this fall so i can say with the utmost authority that this is one of the best i’ve read in a long time.
i used to think one day we’d tell the story of us by notequitegucci (2/2 | 32k+ | M) gendrya; alternate universe—modern setting; outsider POV; friends to lovers; friends to lovers
9 times a stark encounters gendry + 1 time he meets the starks.
note: again, this is the first in a 2 part series titled love me like you do that explores arya and gendry’s dynamics together through the point of view of her family. game of thrones ended last year with a whimper but i keep returning to the gendrya tag on ao3 to seek out new, amazing content and also to re-read some old favorites. i can’t remember if i came across this for the first time last year or this one, but i’ve read it and re-read it more times than i can count since and i love it more than i can describe. i’m a total sucker for outsider POV fics and my biggest pet peeve in canon is the fact that none of the stark’s ever found out that arya and gendry had a history together. this modern au fic almost makes up for it by giving me a gendry encounter with every family member and then the big reveal. it’s peak content.
theeeeeeese recs got a little away from me. i wasn’t originally intending on adding lengthy notes to each entry but ... oh well!! these are all amazing so please enjoy.

this is from a fic i’ve never managed to finish, but if i had to write a pjo au for yoi, victor and yuuri would totally be from different camps.
victor is the pride of camp half-blood, and the sole occupant of the hades cabin. he’s known for being highly adaptable with any sort of weapon, though he’s definitely his best and most graceful with the spear. for a son of hades, he’s actually not all that powerful; his only godly power is how he can manipulate shadows, and compared to raising skeleton soldiers from the dead and having a keen sense for magic and earthly riches, it’s not all that great. he makes up for it by being incredibly masterful and cunning with how he uses them. he’s the only camper to have survived any of his recent quests. his pet hellhound, makkachin, is his closest friend aside from the seductive head of the aphrodite cabin (chris, of course).
yuuri is a son of venus, and a centurion for camp jupiter. his charmspeak is powerful, and he has to keep tight control over it so he doesn’t accidently charm everyone he talks to. it makes him very anxious, but it also makes him a great diplomat. he doesn’t like fighting, but he is trained for it; he’s exceptional with his katana, a katsuki family heirloom. minako, a respected double legacy in new rome, wrote him a great recommendation letter that got him in the second cohort. he feels like he doesn’t deserve it, so he works extra hard to prove himself worthy. he’s also a legacy of bacchus, on his dad’s side. getting him drunk not only makes him lose control over his charmspeak, but also amplifies its power; he can drive people mad with desire with a single look. he’s scared of himself, and it hinders him from truly mastering his abilities.
oh, also, yakov would be chiron, lupa would be lilia, and yuri would be the mortal oracle who is being insanely bitter about how he doesn’t have any demigod powers.

All the Disney Princesses Ranked From Worst to Best.
Tumblr media
(Sorry, no Vanellope.)
14. Merida
I know Merida has really badass archery skills. She’s also outspoken, strong willed, and clever. But she’s still my least favorite princess. I just didn’t like her. Maybe it’s the fact that she wanted to change her mom. And she actually went through with it. Of course, she didn’t actually know what was going to happen, and the journey brought them closer together. She grew as a character and that’s good. But just seeing her disrespect her mother, especially publicly in front of all the clans, is hard to watch. It doesn’t help that I thought Brave was one of Pixar’s weaker movies and essentially Brother Bear all over again.
13. Anna
Not gonna lie. I hate Anna. She’s so damn pushy and combative. I know, it’s all her parents’ fault. All of it. But still. She doesn’t listen to Elsa at all. She pushes and pushes triggering Elsa’s ice outbursts, which become more visible as they build along with her anxiety. Every uncontrolled “accident” Elsa has in the first film is because Anna didn’t listen to her. Of course, she also didn’t listen to Elsa’s warning about marrying Hans either. She foolishly left the kingdom in the hands of an outsider, someone she didn’t even know.
She definitely shows improvement in the second film. She becomes more sensitive towards Elsa’s feelings and her powers. She’s also very loyal and brave, risking her life for Elsa, yet again. She’s still very clingy and desperate for people’s love. It manifests in her fear of losing Elsa and Kristoff. I do not like her humor or awkwardness. I don’t find them relatable, but rather annoying. But I do appreciate that those insecurities are real and that’s what makes her more relatable. Her relationships with the other characters, especially Olaf, is what saves her from being last on my list.
12. Tiana
Tumblr media
There’s nothing wrong Tiana. I think she’s great. She’s hardworking, determined, and a realist. Those are great qualities that I’m glad Disney decided to focus on too. The downside of this is that she comes across as rather boring. The film relies on other more colorful characters to bring the personality and charm. I think that’s a shame. She also suffers from starring in a weaker film.
11. Aurora
I like Aurora. What little we see of her anyway. We can tell by the way she interacts with the fairies, woodland creatures, and Prince Philip that she’s smart, sweet, shy, kind, cautious. She’s a dreamer, but not foolish. It’s too bad we didn’t get to see more of her.
10. Snow White
Tumblr media
Snow White, in my opinion, does not get the respect she deserves. Was she stupid to take that apple from the very obviously evil hag? Yes, she was. But people have forgotten all about the really great qualities she possessed too. When she walked into the dwarfs’ cottage, it was a disgusting, unlivable nightmare. The dwarfs were pigs. They didn’t clean their home or themselves. They bickered all the time. Snow White changed all of that. She created order where there was disorder. And she didn’t do it alone. She delegated chores to each of the animals and made sure they did them right. That’s some managerial skills! She got a bunch of unruly little men to wash, sleep at a decent time, and behave. That’s authority. Those are some real life skills I wish I had more of. Yes, she cooked, cleaned, and sewed, but Snow White wasn’t a servant. She was in charge.
9. Cinderella
Like Snow White, Cinderella has gotten a bad rap over time, but I will defend Cinderella anytime anywhere. Those who say she “needed a prince to save her” lack compassion and are completely missing the point. Cinderella was a young woman who was abused by what family she had left. At a young age she experienced loss, grief, then neglect and emotional abuse. But Cinderella was resilient. That abuse didn’t stop her and it didn’t change her. She could’ve become mean, bitter, and jealous. She could’ve continued the cycle of abuse like her stepsisters. But Cinderella didn’t allow their mistreatment to define her. She remained kind, empathetic, patient, humble, and hardworking. She also didn’t allow herself to become a victim. She didn’t mope or give up on herself. When the ball was announced, she worked hard and believed she would go. When she got help from the fairy godmother, she accepted it and rocked that ball gown. She didn’t go to the ball to be rescued. She went because she wanted to, and she did. Moral of the story is do not let others’ treatment of you determine who you are or what you’re worth. Cinderella had awesome inner strength.
8. Ariel
Tumblr media
I will admit that as an adult, Ariel’s appeal fades. She made really bad choices and sacrificing her voice for a boy is a terrible message to sell to kids. But for a 5 year old girl, only two things mattered. She was a mermaid and she could sing. The Little Mermaid kick started Disney’s renaissance and set a new precedent for its movies. Unlike previous princesses, Ariel was the first princess full of life, passion, and adventure. She had an exciting and lovable personality and a Broadway singing voice. Credit goes to Jodi Benson for bringing Ariel to life and the writers for getting the world to fall in love with her. She made a huge impression (hello, mermaid craziness everywhere!), even if she was a total idiot teenager.
7. Jasmine
What’s great about Jasmine is she can see through people’s BS and she doesn’t put up with it. She isn’t impressed by the superficial suitors that come her way. She stands up to Jafar. She catches on pretty immediately that Prince Ali is actually Aladdin. She sings like Lea Salonga, Disney and Broadway legend, and she has a pet tiger. What’s not to love?
6. Pocahontas
Tumblr media
Pocahontas was the first Disney princess to not go after her dreams, but instead chose family, community, duty, loyalty. That’s incredibly mature and selfless. She taught a racist, arrogant, ignorant man to love and respect others different from him. She followed her intuition, was one nature, and dove off cliffs. The only minus is falling for John Smith over Kokoam. I don’t know what she was thinking!
5. Moana
Tumblr media
Moana is not qualified for her mission. She has no experience and no skills required for sailing across the sea, finding Maui, and defeating a lava monster. But it’s her purpose. She was chosen. So she sets out and figures it out along the way. That’s an inspiring example. It’s not until the end that we find out why she was chosen. She sees Te Ka for who she truly is. Te Fiti. The image above is one of the most powerful moments in all of Disney’s films.
4. Rapunzel
Similar to Cinderella, Rapunzel has been abused throughout her childhood. IMO, Rapunzel had it worse because she believed Mother Gothel was her mother. Their relationship was nonstop manipulation, infantilization, and gaslighting. But Rapunzel was brave enough to go after what she wanted and smart enough to find a way to do it. On top of that, she was creative and artistic, incredibly strong from years of hauling Mother Gothel up the tower, and had magical hair with healing powers. In the end, she does what we didn’t get to see in Cinderella. She stands up for herself and confronts her abuser. She’s a real survivor and victor.
3. Belle
Tumblr media
I love Belle because she is a true introvert and a true individual. She’s not very social, doesn’t gossip, doesn’t fawn over Gaston, doesn’t follow the townsfolk’s way of life. She literally just does her own thing. For that, she’s misunderstood and judged by the village. I think that’s very relatable. But she’s also intelligent, curious, adventurous, honorable (she keeps her promise to stay with the Beast), and stands up to the Beast when he’s out of line. She’s the only one that truly challenges the Beast and he grows because of it. And she saves him.
2. Mulan
Similar to Belle, Mulan is a bit of an outcast, because she’s individualistic in a society that values conformity. She’s socially awkward, clumsy, but brave. That bravery saves her father and all of China. She’s a true badass warrior.
1. Elsa
Tumblr media
Elsa is technically not a princess, but a queen. She still counts and she tops my list. Out of all the Disney princesses, she is the most real and fully developed. She’s beautiful, kind, brave, strong, but also very flawed. Many people have identified with Elsa in different ways because her flaws are so real and so relatable. The LGBTQ community has adopted her as a symbol of their own. For me personally, I see a mental health issue. I think she’s a highly sensitive person with anxiety. Her ice powers are a beautiful symbol for that anxiety and the struggle over her mental health. Her journey to accept herself for who she is, to embrace herself for who she is, and to find her place in a world that deems her different is truly beautiful and empowering.

[fanfic] Desired Disobedience:  Chapter 2
Ryou struggled to find a way out of the sigil binding.  He knew there had to be one - nothing was perfect.  Nothing was flawless, not even the bonds Camula had put on him three years earlier.  He knew there was a way out of those, but it wasn't a way he could exploit.  This wasn't like that.  Sigils did have a flaw - if they were wiped out, then their power faded.  It existed only as long as they were whole.  That was why the strongest sigil magic was that forged into metals.  Anything else could be easily destroyed, assuming it was a substance that could be destroyed.
Such as the collar around his neck.  Silver wasn't fatal to vampires - only wood or sunlight truly could harm him - but it wasn't a good feeling by any means.  It didn't help that the collar was just a trifle tight.  He didn't need to breathe but comfort remained regardless, and the collar bit into him.
I wonder if Haou would like to keep this on me.  His thoughts seared with bitterness.  He could honestly believe Haou would like that, though of course one more tailored to his tastes.  It was the kind of thing Haou enjoyed, displaying his mastery over a former enemy.  Johan's leather armor served the same purpose.  So did, in effect, Ryou's vampirism.  Haou defeated them and it showed in everything about them.
He hated Haou but thinking about him gave him a different focus instead of the dark sorcerer who lounged so temptingly close and yet so far away.  The sigils on the floor binding him and the collar around his neck prevented him from doing anything about this.  The longer he knelt here, the closer it came to sunrise, and there didn't exist a sigil that could protect him from the sun.  He wondered if Vail knew that, or cared if he did.
He needs to care.  I can hardly suck Haou dry if I'm a pile of ashes myself.  He'd heard rumors - a vampire always heard rumors, it could hardly be helped, not when he hid in shadows as a matter of course and could hear almost anything others whispered about - that if a vampire were reduced to ashes, they could be restored by someone dropping blood on those ashes.  While he knew the truth or lies of most vampire legends, that one he wasn't sure of.  He'd never asked Camula, and he suspected if it could be done so easily, she'd not be so eager to avenge the slights against her.
His eyes flicked to the wall where he could see a thin beam of morning sunlight slowly starting to rise.  Perhaps something in the movement caught Vail's attention, since the sorcerer turned towards him.
"Oh, yes.  You do need to hide away from the sun, don't you?"  He smirked, flicking his fingers through Ryou's hair one more time.  "And I suppose you're getting hungry."  It wasn't a question.  Ryou had intended on feeding from him when he'd come here.  But he'd not been able to and now he had to fight every urge in his body, along with the binding sigils.  One said to strike, to feed, while the other kept him as neatly in check as an order from Haou.
"Yes."  That much he could manage to strain out.  He could feel the urge to add a 'master' and bit down as hard as he could to keep it inside.  Vail cupped his chin and stared down at him, lips curved into a very amused smile.
"Say it,"  he murmured.  "You know that you want to.  It's not as if you've never said it before.  You were born to serve a master and now I am that one."
Ryou thought that was so much horse droppings but he couldn't say that, no matter how much he wanted to.  He couldn't read the sigils but he had a pretty good idea that at least one of them forbade him from insulting Vail.  He kept his lips as pressed together as he could.
"Say it."  Vail's order came crisp and strong and carried by the power of the sigils.  Despite all of Ryou's efforts, his lips parted.
"Master."  It tasted like ashes on his tongue, much as addressing Haou respectfully did.  Perhaps this was even worse.  Haou never claimed to be anything but a monster.  Even before he'd known that Ryou came with intent to deceive him, he'd been quite happy to hurt Ryou should the occasion arise.  This sorcerer forced people to pretend to like him and sucked their lives from them.
Vail groaned in delight.  "Oh, I do like how that sounds.  I could get so very used to that."  He raised Ryou to his feet with a gesture, the sigils releasing him just enough so Ryou could follow him out of the room.  "Perhaps I will, once Haou is disposed of.  Such a bratty child he is."  Vail's nose wrinkled.  "Did you know that I lost a great deal of money because of him once?"
Ryou hadn't known.  Nor did Ryou actually care.  But Vail seemed the type to rattle on about himself whether or not anyone actually listened, just to hear himself talk.
"This was when he first came to serve Brron as a gladiator.  Quite a while ago,"  Vail mused as they walked through well-lit corridors - thankfully lit by magic instead of sunlight.  Ryou listened only because he had no choice.  He'd heard that Haou had once been one of Brron's gladiators and had eventually defeated and killed the Mad King.  "There was another gladiator in the chief position at the time - one Amon Garam."
That wasn't a name Ryou recalled having heard.  He wasn't surprised to find out why.
"I visited Brron in those days and he had his two best gladiators - Garam and Haou, known as Yuuki Juudai in those days, fight one another to the death for our amusement."  Vail breathed in a long deep breath.  "Oh, such a glorious combat it was.  The victor would either become Brron's chief gladiator or continue in the position.  I wagered on Garam.  He had years of experience and a fine deck. All that brat had was talent - a lot of it, I grant."
Ryou really could have done without this.  But Vail seemed to take the long way around to wherever they were going, just so he could keep on talking.  At least he wasn't obliged to answer.  He appreciated that.
"But he claimed victory.  A very stunning upset as well.  Garam's scream when he died was impressive."  Vail sighed again, perhaps in memory.  "And by doing so, he lost me a great deal of money to Brron.  Not that I couldn't afford it, but I don't like losing what's mine.  I decided then and there that the day would come when I defeated that little brat in some fashion.  And thus when I heard of what he did to you - creating such a powerful creature and taming it to his hand - I decided then that I would have you for my own."
I think if I could feel sick, this would do it.  There wasn't much that Ryou liked about being undead.  This particular lack of sensation counted among those few perks.
Finally Vail stopped in front of a door.  "You'll stay here until I come for you at sunset,"  he ordered.  "Now, since it is a while before I'm going to send you to Haou, I might allow you to feed tonight.  If I decide that you deserve it."  He regarded Ryou thoughtfully before reaching out to trace a finger over the sigil-carved collar.  "Do behave yourself.  Haou might threaten you with your brother.  I have someone else I have my eye on."
There were few people that Ryou wanted to protect to the point he'd obey someone he hated.  He didn't want to know who this sorcerer thought he could threaten.  He entered the room, not surprised to find that it wasn't much better than a cell.  No decorations, not even a window slit for air, no windows.  In point of fact, he thought it was a closet that had been emptied out.  Or worse; most closets usually had something that involved air flow.  Not this one.
"Good day,"  Vail purred as he closed the door, and Ryou heard it lock as he did.  There wasn't anywhere for him to sit down save the floor and he settled down there.  With no need to brethe, the lack of air flow didn't bother him, but it did annoy him.  He hated being treated like a thing, like a weapon with no voice or will of his own.  Bad enough that Haou did it - Haou at least allowed him to talk back and provided a room that while it did feature sunlight at inconvenient times of day, did also have areas where the sun never touched.  Haou did that merely to display his superiority over Ryou, not because he considered Ryou a knife that might go bad if left in the sunlight.
The sigils floated around him, as they had since he'd risen up and followed Vail.  They weren't as powerful like this as they were when they were etched into something but they were enough to keep him in check.  He wanted to be anywhere but here.  He had to admit that he didn't mind the idea of draining Haou dry.  It was what the monster deserved, if not worse.  But he refused to do it because someone else wanted him to do it, especially not Vail.
I need a way out of here.  The sigils kept him too tightly hedged, no matter what he tried, though.  What he could do was a little movement, nothing more.  It wasn't even enough movement for him to reach into the inner pocket of his coat, where his deck resided.
The tiniest flicker of a thought occurred to him.  He couldn't be certain if it would work.  He hadn't spoken to them in ages.  Sometimes he wondered if they were even still there.  He pressed his lips together, wondering.  How long had it been?  Oh.  He knew.
Before he'd been captured, before he'd been turned.  Haou had removed his deck when he'd been taken, and he had no idea of what had happened to it until after he'd been turned.  He'd not tried to speak to the spirits in his deck since then.  Since he no longer needed to duel, and he couldn't drag up the enthusiasm he'd once had for it, it didn't seem worth the effort.
Now it seemed like it should be worth it.  He closed his eyes and focused.  The sigils didn't seem to have been made to stop this, at least.
Ryou?  Cyber Dragon's voice echoed faintly in his mind.  It's been so long.
"I know,"  he murmured, keeping his voice as low as possible.  "I am sorry.  I - have changed a great deal."
We know. We've watched you as much as we could.  He could feel something similar to scales touch against the side of his neck. When he opened his eyes he could see the shimmering, transparent form of one of his favored monsters hovering near him. But we are yours and you are ours, no matter what.  You need our help.
Ryou didn't like asking for help, but he knew that he needed it right now.  "The collar you can't take off."
No.  Only someone of the blood of the Light can.  Cyber Dragon touched their nose to the collar.  It is beyond our power.  But these sigils?  Cyber Dragon chuffed out a laughed.  Not difficult at all.  But do you want us to?
Ryou at first didn't understand - of course he did.  Then colder sense asserted itself.  If Cyber Dragon could dispel the sigils, then Vail would know.  He would still be in here, unable to escape.  Despite all the tales, turned vampires like him weren't able to turn into mist or bats or whatever else.  He thought Camula might be able to do that, but she'd been born what she was.  That conferred different abilities.
"Not now,"  he murmured, thinking over what they could do.  "How far away from me can you go?"
Not far enough.  But we won't need to.  We are with you, always.  Cyber Dragon brushed against him one more time.  Rest.  You need that, at least.
He didn't sleep the same way that humans did.  This place wouldn't be as comfortable or as reviving as resting in his own quarters, which contained a significant amount of the native soil that he required.  Native soil, in his case, meant a portion of the soil where he'd grown up.  He'd not thought of the place in many years, until Haou provided the soil for him and he found himself resting much easier.
But he could rest regardless and now he settled himself as comfortably as his surroundings permitted.  Aware of the presence of his spirits, those beings who had fought beside him so many times, he let his mind slip away into that place that was neither awake or asleep, but the infinite resting of those who weren't alive or dead.
As always, he had no idea of how long it had been before he opened his eyes.  What he did know was that outside, the sun had set.  He always woke up at sunset.  He could keep himself awake past sunrise with effort, but it wasn't a good idea.  He waited; Vail would be there soon.  The sigils hadn't changed at all.  He wondered if he really would be allowed to feed.
Without warning the door unlocked and swung open.  Vail stood n the other side, now garbed in an entirely different but equally flamboyant style, and gestured.
"Time to get up.  I see you didn't make any foolish attempts to escape, so I will allow you to feed. Aren't you glad that you behaved yourself?"
Ryou wanted to smile.  But he refused to so much as provide a hint as to what he thought.  Instead, he allowed only certain words to fall rom his lips.
"Yes, master."  He knew he looked forward - if that was the right way to frame it - to an entire week of this.  But he had not survived all of Haou's torture for two years and then the three years of undeath after it to submit to this idiot.  He had endured.  H would endure.
Vail had him follow, returning to the chamber where Ryou had been captured the night before. Once again he was forced to kneel while Vail savored a late dinner, then gestured a servant over.  It wasn't the one that had allowed Ryou in the night before, but someone a bit on the older side, with terrified eyes as she spied Ryou there.  She raised no protests, however, as Vail addressed his captive vampire.
"I have no further use for this one,"  Vail decreed.  "But they're still full of blood.  Take it.  Take every bit of it."
It wasn't the first time Ryou had had his meals chosen for him.  He rose to his feet and made it as painless as he could.  The servant barely had time to cry out before the life faded from her.  Ryou fed, drinking every last drop.  When he was done, he lowered the body to the ground and wiped his mouth clean.  He hated making a mess when he ate, but he often had no choice.
"Not nearly as elegant as what I can do,"  Vail decided dismissively. "But I do look forward to seeing you do that to Haou.  Won't you?"
Ryou searched for the words he wanted to say and that he could say.  He chose them with the greatest of care.  "I believe it will be a fascinating sight.  Master."
"To say the least, my vampire. To say the least."
Haou played lightly with Johan's hair, thinking.  He'd cleared off most of his schedule and had even entertained himself to the point he wanted something else to do.  Normally he'd pass extra time by either watching someone else duel or feeding his pet vampire.  But the Hell Kaiser wasn't there right now.
That didn't quite disturb him; he knew the vampire wouldn't be able to do anything that he didn't approve of.  But he didn't like not having Hell Kaiser around.  It was like not having one's favorite toy - well, second favorite toy.  Johan remained his favorite, though the Kaiser made such exquisite sounds of pain.
Where did he run off to?  Normally Hell Kaiser didn't stray far from the castle.  He could travel swiftly as a vampire but he couldn't always be certain of finding a good meal, let alone a proper and safe place to rest.  That was just one of the many ties that bound him to Haou.
He considered carefully, then turned slightly to where Fallen Angel Lucifer stood, observing the quiet antics of his court.  "Could I borrow one of your servants?  I want someone to find Hell Kaiser for me."
Lucifer raised one flawless eyebrow, his wings twitching briefly.  "Oh?  I thought he had a great deal of time before he needed to be back here."
"He does.  That doesn't mean I don't want to know where he is.  They don't have to bring him back.  Just let me know where he is and what he's doing."  Haou shrugged.  He could probably have found the vampire on his own if he put in the effort, but it was starting to get late, and he wanted to get to bed soon.  Sometimes it was quite annoying to have a vampire servant, regardless of how convenient of a punishment it had been at the time.
Lucifer considered. "I think Desire is available. I'm sure he wouldn't mind looking - for a price, of course."  His lips curved into a quick semblance of a smile.  "I'm sure you know what he would want."
Haou chuckled.  "Bring back interesting information and Desire can have him every night for a month."  He knew very well what Fallen Angel Desire could be like when he was in a mood - that was where he'd learned a great deal of what he knew about sex, after all.  Hell Kaiser had picked up a few lessons of his own, whether he liked it or not.
Lucifer tilted his head forward.  "I shall inform him at once."  With a flicker of dark wings he was gone, and Haou returned his full attention to Johan, who stared up at him adoringly.  Haou brushed his fingers against Johan's cheek.  The mention of Desire stirred up that exactly - not that he ever had a lack of it.
"Time for bed," he murmured.  Tonight would be wonderful.
Lucifer flitted through the air in search of his brother.  Desire seldom arrived at Haou's court, but he did turn up for certain occasions.  Like all of the Fallen Angels, once Haou had established his realm, he'd come to pledge his loyalty.  By human standards, he was Haou's uncle, and that required certain actions, just as Haou being the incarnate form of the Destructive Darkness did.
It didn't take long to find Desire.  Desire was never truly hard to find, after all.  He sat perched on a high tower, regarding everything below him, scarlet wings drenched in moonlight.  He had removed his helmet, up here where only someone else who could fly might see him, and Lucifer admired his brother's elegant beauty before he settled down next to him.
"There's a mission for you, if you want it,"  Lucifer said, getting right to the point.  "And I think that you're going to want it.  The reward is something I know you're going to enjoy."
Desire raised an eyebrow lightly.  "Oh?  Do tell."
Lucifer could already tell that he was interested.  He knew the light in his brother's eyes so very well.  He traced one finger down his own wings carelessly.  "I'm certain you recall Hell Kaiser."
Desire licked his lips, smiling.  "Quite well.  I presume this involves him?"
"It seems he's wandered off a bit.  Haou-sama doesn't want him returned, but he does want to know where he is.  Find him and bring back any interesting information, and you'll be allowed to have Hell Kaiser in your bed for an entire month."
By the time Lucifer finished, Desire reached for his helmet and slipped it back over his head.  Lucifer quite clearly saw the lust and pleasure written all over his face before the helmet settled into place.  "I'll be back before morning."
Lucifer chuckled.  "Don't be too noisy when you're enjoying yourself,"  he admonished lightly.  "Some of us enjoy sleeping at night."
Desire glanced back at him.  "Shouldn't I tell that to you?  You make far more noise than I ever could."  He spread his wings and leaped up into the air, circling carefully as he did.  He was excellent for this task; if once Desire had someone in his bed, then he could locate them again with little effort.  The more he bedded someone, the stronger his sense of their location grew.
While he hadn't had Hell Kaiser all that often, clearly the connection was strong enough, and soon he flitted out of sight.  Lucifer watched him go, before heading to his own quarters. He wanted to be up early; something had been on his mind lately and he wanted to think it through before he approached Haou-sama with his suspicions.
Desire coasted along through the air, following that inner sense that told him his target lay in this direction.  He wondered vaguely why Hell Kaiser had come out here to the realm of Vail. Perhaps feeding?  He did come out far from Haou's castle when he hadn't been given anyone else to feed on.
I do wish Haou-sama would allow me to keep him for longer than a month.  He would quite enjoy it.  But at least he had this month, if he could find something interesting to bring back to Haou.  If Hell Kaiser met with rebels or something of the sort here, that might be interesting enough to get the reward.
He darted here and there, covering great swaths of territory with each flap of his wings.  He wanted to make certain that he went the right way.  Vampires could cover almost as much ground as he did, and the sun had come up in the morning, which should have driven Hell Kaiser into sleeping somewhere.  Of course, by now he could be traveling again.  Almost anything could happen and Desire found that interesting in and of itself.
It was getting close to midnight before he found any hint of what he was looking for.  He spied a human of perhaps middle-age slumped down beside a fountain, sobbing loudly enough to be heard even from as high above as he was.  He flitted downward and landed next to them.  The human - a female - raised her head to look at him and stared, captivated almost at once as Desire strolled forward.
"What brings you to such tears?"  Desire asked, voice pitched low.  Humans always seemed to react better to soft voices, he'd noticed.  "Has your lord harmed you?"  It certainly wouldn't be the first time.  Everyone knew about Vail and how he maintained himself over the years.
Slowly the human shook her head, biting her lip.  "I - not really.  But - sort of?"  She wibbled a little.  "My mother works - worked for him.  She was very loyal, very obedient.  She did everything that he wanted for my entire life.  But earlier tonight, she told me that he'd not only discharged her, but he decided she was going to feed his new pet."
Desire cared enough about his brothers to know how infuriating it could be to have someone of the blood disposed of in such a callous fashion. That was her lord's right, of course, but that didn't mean it wouldn't hurt.  "What sort of pet?"  Perhaps he could at least get her distracted.  He considered visiting Vail to see if he'd seen Hell Kaiser as well.  It was worth a chance.
"A vampire he captured just last night.  All of the servants were warned he would be coming and if he spoke to any of us, to allow him in.  Master Vail planned this for a long time."  She sniffled.  "I think he wants to kill Haou with the vampire."
Desire frowned slightly, though the expression wasn't visible behind his helmet.  "Have you seen this vampire?"
"No.  Master Vail keeps him close.  But rumor has it that the creature belonged to Haou.  That's why he's going to be used to kill Haou."
Desire wasn't going to believe that right away.  But he had his own methods of finding out, some more direct than others.  He brushed one armored hand against the side of her face, his voice laced with magic.
"Your mother is at rest.  Mourn her and move on.  Honor her and her service."  His eyes bored into her mind.  "And forget you ever saw me."
Human minds were far too easy to manipulate, in his opinion.  Not that he would complain about that right now.  He took himself back to the air, planning the next step.  Too soon to return to Haou and he didn't have nearly enough information. It could be Hell Kaiser.  There weren't many other vampires that Haou owned.  One might consider Camula, but if the vampire were male, then perhaps it could very well be him.
He leapt back into the air and soared his way towards Vail's capital city, plotting his line of action.
Ryou knew that sunrise was on the way.  Vail stayed awake just to have the pleasure of toying with him during his time of awareness.  He droned onward about magnificent duels that he'd seen and apparently arranged, and dropped a few hints he wouldn't mind seeing Ryou doing battle.  Ryou had to admit that sounded a lot better than he wanted to think about.
"Duels in my realm take place with these,"  Vail said, tapping a spiked collar with matching armbands.  "They inflict damage upon whoever uses them when damage to one's life points occurs.  Of course, as you are undead, it won't have the same effect on you, would it?  Just imagine how high I can set the damage."
Ryou refused to respond at all.  Hearing from Cyber Dragon made him feel a little better.  He hadn't seen any of the spirits since being brought out of that closet, but he could feel the awareness of the other spirits, from Cyber End Dragon all the way to the Cyberdarks.  The Cyberdarks seemed interested in this damage inflicting system, but not enough to encourage him to take them up.
Vail looked as if he were about to get up and head on to bed, probably tucking Ryou in the closet at the same time.  Before he did, a servant entered, bowing low.
"Vail-sama,"  the servant spoke when the dark sorcerer granted permission.  "You have a guest. Fallen Angel Desire has arrived, requiring lodging."
Vail smiled.  "Is that so?  How fascinating."  He turned his attention to Ryou.  "You know him, don't you?  I have heard rumors.  Quite thrilling ones."
He didn't seem to really want an answer this time.  Ryou took pleasure in not giving it.  Vail gestured for him to stay where he was as he headed out of the room.  Ryou did not relax for a moment.  He wasn't certain of what to think of Desire being there, if Desire even was.  He'd not trust that until he saw the Fallen Angel for himself, and he might even not trust it then.  There were shapeshifters and illusionists everywhere.
But why would Desire be here, if it was him?  Ryou didn't know the answer to that.  Desire normally remained in what had once been Norbu - it had been renamed but Ryou couldn't remember what the new name was.  Though given that Haou intended to 'celebrate' having had Ryou turned, perhaps he'd arrived for that.  It would be like him.
A handful of minutes later, Vail entered the chamber, with a familiar figure by his side.  Ryou sniffed the air and knew at once this was Desire. He would never mistake that scent.
Desire regarded him thoughtfully, then glanced at Vail.  "So you do have him.  I wouldn't have thought it possible to bind him like this.  The bond between a created vampire and their sire is quite strong."
"Oh, I don't doubt that Camula could break the sigils if she were here,"  Vail said with a wave of one hand, resuming his place on his favorite lounge and gesturing Desire to seat himself elsewhere.  "But she's not, and I'm having her distracted elsewhere.
"How fascinating."  Desire lounged backwards, all of his attention on Vail.  Ryou kept himself as still as he could.  He wasn't sure what to make of this new turn of events.  He couldn't guess at why Desire was there or why he spoke to Vail so civilly.   "I gather you intend to have him feed off Haou?  Why else take his pet vampire?"
"Oh, I have more uses for him than that.  You, of all beings, can see what other uses he might have."  Vail laughed a silken laugh.  "He could also be a fine duelist again.  Have you ever seen these?"  He tapped the shock collars he'd left on the table, explaining what they could do.  Desire made sounds of appreciation and enjoyment.
"I've heard that he's a spectacular duelist, or used to be one at least,"  Desire agreed.  He regarded Ryou as one might regarded a pretty hollow trinket.  "I quite agree that seeing him defeat an opponent could be fascinating. Especially as he cannot feel the damage in the same way.  When did you intend to try him out with these?"
Vail pressed one finger against his lip.  "I think I can arrange an opponent for him tomorrow night.  Did you intend to watch?"
"Oh, I think I would love that.  I must inform my brother, of course, that I have been unavoidably detained."  He waved one hand.  "But you don't have to worry about that.  We can communicate with one another easily with magic."
Vail nodded, waving one hand.  "As you wish."  He smirked, regarding Ryou again.  "I am aware that you've had him in your bed before.  Would you care to renew your acquaintance?  He'll be rather quiet unless I wish otherwise.  If that matters?"
"I do prefer him making some noise.  But I would indeed enjoy his company."  He snorted briefly.  "I swear to you, my brother Lucifer thinks he can command my loyalty to Haou merely because we share blood.  I would watch him drain all the life from that upstart and Lucifer and enjoy the sight."
That made rather more sense to Ryou than he would have especially enjoyed.  But his opinion on any of this wasn't asked, as Vail had him get up and follow Desire through the corridors and to the quarters Desire had been assigned.  The door closed and locked behind them, and Desire settled down on the bed, pulling out a silver crystal from nowhere.  He regarded it for a few moments before he breathed on it, then whispered, "Lucifer, dear brother.  Answer me."

Marvel’s Loki Episode 5 Ending Explained: Who is the Real Villain of the MCU Series?
https://ift.tt/36oBhxO
This article contains spoilers for Loki episode 5.
Agent Mobius did say that time ran differently in the TVA but who could have imagined that the penultimate episode of Loki would arrive so quickly? Marvel’s Loki episode 5 “Journey Into Mystery” keeps up a streak of superb installments for this increasingly superb show.
In this hour, Mobius joins the side of the heroes, Judge Renslayer has some questions, and Loki and Sylvie’s relationship continues to blossom thanks to the conjuring of an uncomfortable green blanket. Equally as important, however, is that “Journey Into Mystery” raises some big questions about the ending of this show and the future of the MCU. Questions like…
What is The Void?
This episode does a pretty good job of succinctly describing what the Void is. The Void is the end of time, itself. Since the Time-Keepers are unable to completely destroy matter (Theory of Conservation of Mass and all that), they send unwanted Variants to the end of the timeline to languish or be swallowed by a hungry monster (more on him in a bit).
In Marvel Comics, The Void is something of an actual character. It is a destructive amorphous entity capable of both adopting a corporeal form and destroying the universe as we know it. During the Siege storyline, the Void even killed Loki, which then facilitated his “rebirth” as Kid Loki. See how this all starts to fit together?
What is Alioth?
In the world of Loki, Alioth is a big, hungry cloud monster that prowls the Void looking to consume yummy matter. It’s the TVA’s unwitting cleaning service, wiping out all the Variants that the TVA can’t eliminate. Classic Loki helpfully offers up the analogy that the Void is a shark tank, and Alioth is the shark.
Alioth of the comics was first introduced in 1993’s Avengers: The Terminatrix Objective #1. That same comic also introduced Ravonna Renslayer and features Kang the Conqueror as its central villain. Oh yeah, it’s all coming together.
Alioth is considered to be the first being that broke free from the constraints of time. It’s no wonder then that it would make an appearance in Loki.
What’s Up With That Castle?
It’s about time a Marvel villain lives in an honest-to-goodness castle! While it’s still possible that this is a misdirect and this environment is not what it seems, for now it looks like episode 6 will be headed off to a spooky castle.
Interestingly, there are no shortages of spooky castles in Marvel comics lore. Perhaps the most famous one is Castle Doom within Doomstadt. Bet you’ll never guess who lives there! Yes, it’s ol’ Victor von Doom himself, Doctor Doom to his friends…of which he has very few.
Another notable abode is Castle Limbo, which serves as the home of Immortus, who was once Nathaniel Richards a.k.a. Kang the Conqueror. Look, Kang is a confusing character, so you’ll just have to trust us on this one.
What is Mobius’s Plan?
Thank the gods that Loki and Mobius finally embraced their destiny as best bros. Mobius leaves all the Lokis behind in The Void to return to the TVA. What does he plan to do once he gets there? Why, burn the whole thing down, of course!
It’s unclear how Mobius believes he’s able to pull off such a grand task. The TVA is an enormous bureaucracy with seemingly infinite moving parts. The only real weapon that Mobius has at his disposal is the truth. The truth changed his and Hunter B-15’s perspectives but can it do the same for everyone else? The only other named TVA employee that we’re aware of is Casey (Eugene Cordero). He seems like a sweet, non-confrontational lad. But perhaps that will all change once he realizes he’s been robbed of fish dinners his whole life.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
What Becomes of the Other Lokis?
The most pleasantly strange aspect of “Journey Into Mystery” is how many new Lokis it introduces. This hour features: Classic Loki (Richard E. Grant), Boastful Loki (DeObia Oparei), Kid Loki (Jack Veal), President Loki (Hiddleston), and Alligator Loki (uh… a CGI alligator). Naturally, each of those Lokis has their own official hashtag sprite on Twitter.
Fittingly for their chaotic energy, each of the Lokis introduced in this episode have quite different ultimate fates. Boastful Loki betrays his Loki comrades, because that’s just what Lokis do. The subsequent scene of President Loki and his Void army battling the other Lokis is one of the best moments of this show yet. That causes our Loki to take off with Classic, Kid, and Alligator. When Mobius invites that trio to come back to the TVA with him, they decline because the Void is their home now.

Sylvie is the Secret Heart of Marvel’s Loki
By Lacy Baugher
Games
How Loki and Fallout Use Retrofuturism to Unnerve Us
By Matthew Byrd
That is the last we’ve seen of Kid Loki and Alligator Loki thus far but not the last of Classic Loki. The comic-accurate trickster returns to help Loki and Sylvie when they need it the most. He uses stunningly powerful magic to create an approximation of Asgard all around him, distracting the ravenous Alioth. Even Sylvie with her enchantress power is stunned by Classic Loki’s abilities.
Is Richard E. Grant’s Classic Loki Really Dead?
Ultimately Classic Loki is swallowed up by the Alioth and therefore finally blinked out of existence. Or is he? It seems like he could have been utilizing the very same technique here he claims to have used to escape his death at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. “I think we’re stronger than we realize,” Loki tells Sylvie, so this would certainly be a case of that if it came down to it.
Plus, that leads us to the final and most important question that this episode raises.
Who is the Villain?
Who indeed? There has been one name bandied about as the most likely Loki Big Bad. Before we get to him (and it’s absolutely who you think), indulge us in another theory. What if the villain of Loki is…
Classic Loki or Another Loki Variant
Richard E. Grant is kind of a big deal as an actor. It’s not every day you can find a seasoned performer who can portray a kindly exterior with some menace underneath. With that in mind, it’s possible that Classic Loki is a bigger character than he appears at first glance. This episode goes out of its way to communicate just how powerful Lokis can be. And when you combine that kind of god-like power with a trickster’s sensibility, it’s not hard to imagine that Classic Loki, or another Loki entirely, could be pulling all the strings.
Kang the Conqueror
While Loki confronting himself in the end would make for a dramatically interesting enterprise, the hard evidence at hand still seems to indicate that Kang the Conqueror is our real villain. The internet at large has been banging the drum for Kang the Conqueror as the ultimate Loki villain for weeks now and it’s not hard to see why.
This isn’t a case of collective delusion like with all of the Nightmare/Mephisto WandaVision theorizing, Kang really does seem to be a legitimate possibility. For starters, we know we already have an MCU actor for Kang in the fold already in the form of Jonathan Majors (Lovecraft Country). Kang was announced for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania but doesn’t it sound very Marvel for the character to make his unexpected debut here?
In the comics, Kang the Conqueror is wrapped up in multiverses, timelines, and all manner of heady sci-fi nonsense that Loki is already invested in. In fact, as Reddit user u/Hpotter821 points out, one iteration of Kang in Marvel comics sought to become Immortus by eliminating all of his other Variants. It would seem that creating the TVA to police other timelines would be quite useful in that mission.
Then there’s the fact that Kang has at least some level of crossover with just about every major character and element of Loki. Kang has a relationship with Ravonna Renslayer in the comics and is also an occasional rival of Alioth. The show is not shy about injecting Kang’s aesthetic into the proceedings. While ostensibly space lizards as Loki described them, the Time-Keepers do appear to resemble the classic Kang the Conqueror look a bit. And the TVA logo?
Oh. Hey. I just noticed that the centerpiece of the Time Variance Authority’s seal totally looks like Kang’s head. 🤷‍♂️ #Loki pic.twitter.com/93QzNDVSbi
— Ken Plume (@KenPlume) July 2, 2021
Oh yeah, that’s Kang, baby.
Perhaps by this time next week, all of this Kang conjecture will look as silly as WandaVision’s Mephisto fever dream. It’s undeniable, however, that Loki has provided us with plenty of breadcrumbs. If it’s all a Kang-sized red herring, then so be it.
Doctor Doom
This is a considerable longshot, despite the fact that we’ve wanted it to happen for a long time. Doom was at the center of Marvel Comics’ multiverse-shattering Secret Wars event by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic, and the castle we see in this episode’s conclusion sure does look an awful lot like his humble Doomstadt home.
Every time we get excited about Doctor Doom or the potential Secret Wars threads embedded in this show, we’re brought back to reality by the fact that there’s virtually no way that Marvel would introduce arguably their greatest villain in a teasing series finale episode, especially not when they’ve got the Kang-centric Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to tee up with Kang. Yes, we’re hedging our best by including him, but can you blame us?
Anyway, patience, Doom fans. The Fantastic Four movie is finally a priority for the MCU, and we should see that by 2023.
Kevin Feige
This obviously won’t happen but in the spirit of Marvel’s next Disney+ series What If…?, what if Loki and Sylvie arrive to the throne room in the castle and Marvel Studios head Kevin Heige is hanging out there wearing one of his trademark baseball caps? As witnessed in WandaVision and now Loki, this phase of Marvel cinematic storytelling is clearly about setting up a new multiverse of possibilities. What better way to introduce that multiverse than by completely breaking the fourth wall?
OK, so there are probably a ton of better ways but Feige would at least be fun and truly unexpected.

Do you have any good suicidal Sherlock? Or ones where he self harms???
@vg-remy said to inevitably-johnlocked: can we get John left sherlock for Mary after he returns and sherlock grew suicidal
Hey Lovelies! *HUGS*
Remy, I don’t really read many fics within which Sherlock and John don’t end up together, so I can’t recall much in that way. BUT because this fic is looking for Suicidal Sherlock, I’ve decided to attach it to this list.
So, yes, Nonny I absolutely do. I’ve done lists in the past for Self Harm so I’ll link you to those below. I’m going to put both John and Sherlock fics on here, and 95% of these have happy endings, because I can’t do sad stuff too much anymore lately, so I hope that’s okay

Suicide Mission Post TAB
Voices by fizzingweaselbee (T, 607 w., 1 Ch. || Angst, Mental Turmoil, Suicidal Ideations) – “We would never do that to John Watson.”
Stay by sussexbound (M, 2,067 w., 1 Ch. || Post TAB, Suicidal Ideation Mention, Implied / Referenced Drug Use, Kissing, Love Confessions, Frottage, Coming in Pants) –  “Why? Why did you do it? Hmm…?” He takes a deep breath, waits, lets it out again. “Look at me.” There’s no denying him when he takes this tone. “Why did you kill him? Hmm…? For her? After…” A muscle twitches in the corner of John’s eye, and he clamps his jaw down tightly, swallows and sniffs a little before continuing. “For her? After everything she’s done?” “For you.” Before he can even stop himself. Just like that.
Pen Pals by WerewolfDoctor (K, 2,797 w., 1 Ch. || Epistolary, Hurt/Comfort, Friendship, Post-TRF) – Most people don’t become pen pals by one of them writing a not-suicide note. Then again, Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have never exactly been normal, have they?
Too Late by SJBHasADayPass (T, 3,390 w., 2 Ch. || Angst, Suicide, Tragedy, Major Character Death, First Person POV, Unhappy Ending) – Six months after the Fall, John is finding it difficult without Sherlock, and Sherlock is finding it just as painful.
Watching You Die by laureleaf (T, 10,340 w., 11 Ch. || Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Post-TRF, Suicide, Switching POVs, Sort-of Rev. Reich., Whump) – John watched Sherlock die three years ago, and Sherlock just watched John die. But neither of them are actually dead. Now an AU, with nods to “The Adventure of the Empty House”. Lots of angst and post-Reichenbach feels. No slash.
There’s So Much Labour Just in Breathing Lately by Susan (E, 12,708 w., 1 Ch. || Post-TRF / Mentions of S3 Events, Romance, Angst, Grief/Mourning, Grieving John, Mutual Pining, Meddling Mycroft, Therapy, Ambiguous Hopeful Ending, Infidelity) – The dreams he hated most – the ones that left him a sweating, shaking mess when he woke – were the ones in which Sherlock was just Sherlock. Laughing or drinking tea. Sitting across the table from him at Angelo’s eating pasta. Trailing his open hand behind him on the way to the bedroom. “C’mon, John. I’m about to have my way with you.”
Software Malfunction by tiger_in_the_flightdeck (E, 16,679 w., 1 Ch. || PODFIC AVAILABLE || Android Sherlock, Love Story, Unhappy Ending, Angst, Suicide, Jealousy) – “You think I can’t love you? Just because you’re made with metal, and detailed programming?” The doctor propped himself on his elbow, and looked down at it. “I am nothing but blood and bone, and tissue. Things just managed get mashed together in a manner that made me like this. Just like you were put together to make you how you are. When I kiss you-” he did so, briefly, to prove his point. Then more deeply, and lingering, because he could. “When I touch you, or smile at you, does it make you feel different from when others have done it in the past?”
Wonderful, Etcetera. by VictoryCandescence (T, 16,955 w., 3 Ch. || Wonderful Life AU || Alternate Timelines, Brotherhood, Homophobia, Suicidal Ideations, Mentions of Drug Use, Friendship, Different TRF, Sherlock’s Past, Victor Trevor is Past Boyfriend, Depression, Hallucination, Love Confessions, Christmas, First Kiss) – Sherlock thinks everyone would be better off if he had never existed, including and especially himself. When he finds himself in a world in which his wish has been granted, he begins to think perhaps even he could be wrong – but it takes an unlikely chaperone to make him not only observe, but understand.
State of Flux by Atiki (E, 24,655 w., 4 Ch. || S3 Fix It, Sherlock POV, Slow Burn, First Kiss/Time, Friends to Lovers, Frottage, Cuddles and Snuggles, Awkwardness, Insecure/Virgin Sherlock, Romance, Humour, Masturbation, Love Declarations, Bottomlock, Brief Suicidal Ideations) – John’s marriage is over and he is finally back home (i.e. at Baker Street, where he belongs). Sherlock is awfully insecure and John is awfully hesitant, and they’re both awkward idiots, of course, but they figure it out. Many First Times happen.
A Home for Us by sussexbound (M, 30,581 w., 12 Ch. || Scars, Bedsharing, Grief, Doctor John, Hurt/Comfort, Post-TRF, Implied/Referenced Torture, Sherlock POV, Pining Sherlock, Suicidal Ideation, Heavy Emotions, Clingy Sherlock, Hallucinations, Disassociation, Emotional Turmoil) – He has been on the road for two years, and he is exhausted. He’s almost accepted that he will never see London (John) again—almost. But then there are nights like tonight, where he is weak, and all he can think of is the warmth of the flat they once shared, the crackle of the fire in the hearth, the teasing smile playing at the corner of John’s lips, the boxes of half-eaten Chinese takeaway balanced precariously in their laps. He aches at the memory of it, at the realisation that it is something he may never experience again.
Turn Left at the Park by Glenmore (NR (E), 37,409 w., 28 Ch. || Alternate First Meeting / ASiP Divergence, Case Fic, Depression, Suicidal Ideation, Loneliness, No Mary, Possessive Sherlock, Fluff & Angst, Nightmares/PTSD, Sherlock Saves John, Sherlock Whump-ish, Doctor John) – So what would have happened if John hadn’t walked through the park and met Stamford? What if, instead, he walked around the park and just went home?
Impossible to Feign by achray (M, 49,204 w., 12 Ch. || TRF Rewrite / Reverse Reichenbach, Suicidal Ideations / Discussions, Drug Use/Abuse, Mutual Pining, Friends With Benefits, John Accepts his Sexuality, Anxious Sherlock, Meddling Mycroft, Depression, Hallucinations, Secret Agent John, BAMF John, Reunion, Make-Up Sex, Ambiguous Ending) – Sherlock leant forward, his long fingers curving round to grip John’s.“I won’t let him win,” he said, eyes hard. “I will do whatever it takes to get you out.”
A Hundred Crimson Sols by elldotsee (E, 55,536 w., 16 Ch. || Astronauts AU || Mars Exploration / Space Travel, Slow Burn, Shy Sherlock, Scientist Sherlock / Biomed Engineer John, Alternating POV, Mutual Pining, UST, Angst with Happy Ending, Domestic Fluff, Hurt/Comfort, Injuries, Suicidal Ideation, Zero-G Sex) – Will Holmes is a chemical researcher recognized widely for his contributions to the new Mars exploration program. Thanks to his ground-breaking developments, the IMMC (International Mars Mission Corporation) is one step closer to Martian colonization. Will and his team of scientists are headed out on the first of three manned missions before the first group of settlers arrive. Three days before launch, one of the crew has to be replaced. Will panics because…new people. The replacement is of course one John Watson, biomedical engineer and space hottie who was pretty sure he had retired from actual space exploration and was now content to work in the nice, quiet research lab. Can the crew survive this TOTALLY ROUTINE trip? Will they be able to endure each other for the looooooong trip in close quarters? Gonna be a wild ride… prepare for blast off. Part 1 of SpaceBois go to Space
The Burning by SrebrnaFH (M, 60,658 w., 24 Ch. || Reverse Reichenbach, Suicide, Depression, Hurt Sherlock / John, Separation, BAMF John, Good Big Brother Mycroft, Angst, Implied/Referenced Torture, Fake Character Death, Rescue Mission, Reconciliation / Reunion, Hospitalization, Marriage Proposal, Illnesses, Physical Therapy, Happily Ever After) – Something went very, very wrong. John had seemed, if not happy, then reasonably content with his life. Sherlock had never predicted something like THIS might have happened. Not in his worst nightmares. He was the lousiest friend ever, apparently. At least Mycroft found him something to occupy his mind with, so that he didn’t have to go back to 221B and stare at the walls and the chair, where John Watson would never sit again.
Just To Hold You Close by sussexbound (E, 70,841 w., 18 Ch. || Alternate First Meeting, Sherlock POV, ASD Sherlock, PTSD John, Demisexual Sherlock, Bisexual John, Cuddling/Snuggling, Platonic Cuddling, Enthusiastic Consent, Bed Sharing, Love Confessions, First Kiss/Time, Sexual Tension, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Cuddle Negotiations, For a Case Until It Isn’t, Hair Petting, Sexual Negotiation, Anxiety, Trust Issues, Slow Burn, Panic Attacks, Frottage, Hand/Blow Jobs, Referenced Self Harm / Abuse / Suicidal Ideation, First Kiss/Time, Anal, Autistic Sherlock) – When a woman is murdered and the last person to see her alive is recently invalided army vet turned reluctant (and prickly) professional cuddler, John Watson, Sherlock Holmes is pulled into a world of intimacy and intrigue he never could have imagined. John is a conundrum and mystery: frank yet reserved, tender yet angry, open yet afraid. Sherlock is instantly drawn into his orbit, and begins to feel and desire things he never has before.
Darkling, I Listen by You_Light_The_Sky (T, 73,254 w., 8 Ch. || Fairy Tale AU || Loosely Based on Beauty and the Beast, Magical Realism, Suicidal Themes, Romance, Creepiness, Adventure) – No one who enters old London ever comes out. Ten years later, he’s a haunted cynic working for his ex-lover’s trekking and mountaineering company. Not Broken, Just Bent by Schmiezi (E, 87,585 w., 43 Ch. || Pining, Love Confessions, Rape/Sexual Assault, Torture, Hurt/Comfort, Heavy Angst, Villain!Mary, Suicidal Ideations, Main Character Death, Sherlock First Person POV, Parentlock, Sherlock’s Mind Palace, Grief/Mourning, Emotional Love Making, Possessiveness, Depression, PTSD, Kidnapping, Virgin Sherlock, Eventual Happy Ending) – "For a second, I allow myself to remember teaching John how to waltz. There is a special room in my mind palace for it. A big one, with a proper parquet dance floor. For a second, I go there. I remember holding him, closer than the World Dance Council asks for, excusing it with the fact that we are training for a wedding, not for a competition. For a second, I feel his hand on mine again, smell his sweat, hear the song we used. For a second, I allow myself to love him deeply. For a second, only a second, that love reflects on my face.” Fix-it for S3, starting at the end of TSoT. Evil Mary.
Northwest Passage by Kryptaria (E, 95,157 w., 27 Ch. || PODFIC AVAILABLE || Canadian AU ||  BAMF!John, Canadian John, PTSD, Anal / Oral Sex, Rimming, Emotional Hurt / Comfort, Drug Rehab, Falling in Love, Pining Sherlock, Love Confessions, Sherlock’s Violin, Panic Attacks, Switching, Anxious / Protective Sherlock, Hugs for Comfort, Suicide Mentions, Healing Each Other) – Seven years ago, Captain John Watson of the Canadian Forces Medical Service withdrew from society, seeking a simple, isolated life in the distant northern wilderness of Canada.
