I really hate to post something like this on an account called uke-zone, but there's not much choice. I'm going to be homeless in a month.
For the past 2 years, I’ve been stuck in a toxic job because I took the first one I could get without reliable transport. I’ve been working as a web admin, making $14,400 a year. My rent is $12,360 a year, not including bills. I scraped by, constantly stressed, and exhausted. I lived alone after leaving an abusive family environment, so I just kept going.
Four days ago I was given a termination notice—the day after I refused to violate FCC guidelines. They wanted me to add a static list of customers to an email list, without allowing them to unsubscribe, and I couldn’t let myself be complicit or get hit with a $5,000 fine.
No savings, no support system, and no cushion. I won't survive the next month if I'm evicted. There is just straight up nowhere to go.
If you’re able to help me keep a roof over my head while I continue the job search, please drop a $20 or the most that won't hurt here: paypal.me/Ymukhopadhyay

In Texas, unemployment takes at least 4 weeks, assuming no disputes, and with my employer that's not happening. Rent is due. I’d be eligible for $143 a week, which... isn’t even close to enough to keep a roof over my head or eat. I couldn’t pay one month of rent if I tried. I'm looking down the barrel of being homeless again, and would frankly rather be dead.
If you have any need for a web developer, designer, or multimedia content specialist, I'd appreciate any support there as well, whether through projects or referrals.
I need to survive the next 30 days to not be constantly on the verge of losing everything. Going back to living paycheck-to-paycheck with no security and no safety net isn't an option. I was terrified one mistake or one bad turn could leave me with nothing until it did.
If you can’t offer help, I understand. But if you can, I'm begging in random tags on the Internet because I don’t want to be homeless again.
GoFundMe, if PayPal isn't an option
Thanks for reading this. ❤️

I'M BACK
...but Tumblr is still blocked on residential internet and I don't want to risk getting flagged by the spam filter again for using VPN, so let's hope reporting my ISP to our National Telecommunication Agency does something. At least this blog isn't restricted anymore; thanks for those who interacted with my test posts (you did help) and T&S team for fixing the issue! ✨
I'll be doing artistic and scientific collaborations at Oceanview in the meantime. See ya around. 🍹
#can you believe in my ISP's audacity today to say there's a court order to block tumblr residentially for no reason and only for them#when clearly that's not how things work here in Brazil and sites using the same route (wordpress and nygamecritics) are blocked as well?#they literally came up with this bs just because I made the report but it contradicts their tech support history#they guaranteed me for TWO MONTHS there was no order at all and they couldn't understand why it's blocked :( :( :(#they tried *everything* to help when they could just have sent me the information about this (inexistent) court order in January :( :( :(#I accessed it normally through my neighbour's ISP and I'm using my 4G now. Should I let Alexandre de Moraes know about this? 😔#fr tho calculate with the wrong % as much as you want but preventing me to get my daily dose of emotional support dilfs when I'm grieving#definitely crosses the line lmao

WordPress – Is It Worth Investing For Your Ecommerce Business?
WordPress has become a popular choice for businesses worldwide. Many use it to build websites, including ecommerce stores. But is it worth your investment? Let’s explore this topic in detail.

What is WordPress?
WordPress is a platform for building websites. It is open-source and easy to use. Businesses of all sizes use WordPress. It powers over 40% of all websites globally. You can build blogs, portfolios, and online stores with WordPress. It is flexible and highly customizable. The platform supports plugins to enhance its functionality.
Why Consider WordPress for Ecommerce?
WordPress is not just for blogs. WooCommerce Help supports ecommerce solutions. Plugins like WooCommerce transform WordPress into an online store. WooCommerce is free and offers premium features. You can sell physical and digital products. It also supports subscriptions and memberships.
Advantages of Using WordPress for Ecommerce
1. Cost-Effectiveness
WordPress is free to download. You only pay for hosting and domain names. Custom plugins and themes may require extra costs. Compared to custom-built platforms, WordPress is affordable. Even small businesses can afford it.
2. Flexibility and Customization
WordPress offers endless customization options. You can choose from thousands of themes and plugins. Themes control your WordPress Website Design. Plugins add features like payment gateways and SEO tools.
3. SEO-Friendly Features
WordPress makes search engine optimization (SEO) easier. It has WordPress SEO plugins like Yoast SEO and Rank Math. These tools help optimize your website for search engines. They guide you to improve keywords, meta tags, and readability.
4. Scalability for Growth
WordPress grows with your business. You can start small and expand later. Adding products, pages, and features is easy. Even with growth, WordPress remains efficient.
5. User-Friendly Interface
You don’t need coding skills to use WordPress. Its interface is intuitive and easy to learn. Even beginners can manage their websites. Tutorials and online forums offer extra WordPress support.
Challenges of Using WordPress for Ecommerce
1. Regular Maintenance
WordPress requires frequent updates. Themes, plugins, and the core platform need to stay updated. Neglecting updates can make your site vulnerable to security risks.
2. Security Concerns
WordPress is a popular target for hackers. Using outdated plugins or themes increases risks. However, using reliable plugins and secure hosting can reduce these risks.
3. Dependency on Plugins
WordPress relies heavily on plugins for ecommerce functionality. Poorly coded plugins can slow down your site. You must choose trusted plugins for better performance and security.
How WordPress Compares to Other Platforms?
Shopify
Shopify is a dedicated ecommerce platform. It is easier to use than WordPress for online stores. However, Shopify can be more expensive. WordPress offers more flexibility at a lower cost.
Wix
Wix is beginner-friendly but less flexible than WordPress. Its ecommerce features are limited compared to WooCommerce.
Magento
Magento is powerful but requires technical knowledge. WordPress is easier for non-developers.
Is WordPress Worth the Investment?
For many businesses, WordPress is a great choice. It is cost-effective, flexible, and scalable. However, it may not suit everyone. If you need a ready-made solution, Shopify or Wix could be better.
Conclusion
WordPress is worth considering for your ecommerce business. Its affordability, customization, and SEO tools are unmatched. Evaluate your business needs before choosing a platform. WordPress may be the key to your ecommerce success.

Why did wheat become a widespread staple crop given that it's difficult to harvest/transport/etc? This is not meant to be snarky or combative in any way, it's a genuine question. Are there any books you'd recommend for learning more about this kind of economic and technological history? Thanks.
sorry, i've long since forgotten all the actual books i've read about it, but i will always recommend This Guy:
also as very much a non-expert, my semi-informed opinion on Wheat is that growing complicated and difficult compared to going to the grocery store, and doesn't stack up very well to living in a food forest like north and south americans managed, either.
however, wheat is a grass, and grass grows in a lot of places that people also like to live in, and so wheat farming isn't as crazy a venture as it might otherwise seem.
in a lot of climates, it's possible to plant the grass, harvest the grass seeds, and store the seeds long enough to get you through the part of the year where there's nothing much to eat. if you manage your social and material technology right, you can store a lot of the seeds, and you can even transport them around before they rot, meaning you can now export the seeds from places where grass grows into places where it doesn't. the stalks of the grass that you can't eat provides food for the animals you need to help you grow the grass. and transport the seeds, too.
the social structure required to grow wheat in bulk (a steep and violent hierarchy) does three things: feeds everyone in it with enough extra that the guys on the bottom of the organization can survive to grow more wheat next year, and allows the guys on the top can sequester the rest as profit, consolidating their power. the third thing is that as land is converted to wheat fields, it stops yielding any other food but wheat, which locks people into the system for good. once a people depend on a staple cereal grain for their main source of calories, there isn't an easy way back: forests are chewed away for more wheat fields and those woodlands that remain are shifted towards hardwoods for agricultural tools, rather than food forests with fruit/nuts/shrubs, and even those maintained as game preserves still can't support the needs of entire villages.
in arid and semi-arid conditions, it's even harder to step away from dependence on grain farming because there the agricultural development is along rivers where the land can be irrigated, and the population of people supported by grain production is extremely concentrated into those small areas rather than spread across the entire biome.
in the northern parts of eurasia where grain couldn't be produced at scale because it was too rocky and too cold, people mostly went fishing, and when they grew stuff it was hardy root crops like beets and turnips.
DISCLAIMER: this is all very approximate. but now you know as much as i know.
P.S actually here's the last thing about wheat: it probably all started as a way to reliably source and produce beer, which was invented a long time before bread. bread was invented from wheat when the guys who were producing the beer seeds wanted to start exporting beer seeds to people who wanted beer far away, so they baked the seeds into tablets you could easily transport and then ferment with water once you got to your destination. eventually the traders who were transporting the beer kits started eating them, too, and crackers as a snack food really took off. look up the wikipedia article on beer if you don't believe me.
#wheat#agriculture#you want kings? that's how you get kings#you start out just wanting to source some beer reliably#then you fucking get kings#what a racket

About a year ago, WordPress CEO Matt Mullenweg mentioned that Tumblr would support the Fediverse, but there haven’t been any updates on this since then.
While the Fediverse is an interesting idea, I believe Tumblr should consider supporting AT Protocol instead. With Bluesky being the fastest-growing social media platform and the only one currently using AT Protocol, implementing this on Tumblr would not only provide strong competition but also make it easier for users to move between platforms.
This could help prevent monopolies and promote decentralized social networking. Are there any plans for Tumblr to adopt AT Protocol, or could this be considered in the future?
Answer: Hi, @mohdasif!
Good news! While it is still on the list, the Tumblr to WordPress migration will definitely unlock ActivityPub for Tumblr! In fact, one big reason for the migration itself is to get us into the Fediverse. When that’s done, we’re in.
The migration is still a work in progress, as we’ve previously detailed here, but we can say for sure that it will include support for WordPress’s existing ActivityPub plugins. We hope this comes as good news.
Thanks for your question, and we hope it won’t be too long. Keep the questions coming!

Hi!!! I hope you get what you want for your event. Don't forget to check your DMs. Also, I think the idea of spreading this here is very genius. How did you come up with it?
What I have in mind to write is actually about Nagi😍 As Nsfw, I wonder if it is possible for us to think in a sleepy way, like, it's a nice night before sleeping with Nagi, but Nagi is very sleepy, I keep this in mind because even I wasn't sure how to explain it, you are free to choose the way of writing and the plot. !!! Good luck with the project!💕💕🤗
hihi !! thank you so much for supporting my wordpress event! i had the idea since my partner knows about my blog and supports it, so that's why i offered the headcanons! now, let's chat about nagi's sleepy sexy tendencies...
SEISHIRO NAGI . . . SIT BACK, AND RELAX (?)
— when i say nagi will literally almost never initiate anything intimate, i mean it. if he's lazy enough to not want to eat because then he'll have to brush his teeth, then imagine what happens with other, non-important needs like his intimate desires. nagi will never really get turned on by anything, because he has no reason to. he sees you and thinks you're ethereal, yes, but does he have to view you in a sexual way? that's a hassle.
— that's until you fiiinally take the initiative, because frankly, you're going to have to introduce nagi to the world of intimacy, because if it were up to him, he'd be left in the dark. he'll have to experience your touch for him to realize he likes it, and finds himself being surprisingly vocal of how much he's enjoying it. so you best believe you'll be getting your feedback on what you're doing right immediately.
— now, if you reeaaaally want to rile him up, aphrodisiacs are the way to go. as i've mentioned before, nagi is hard to tease, so you'll have to resort to the chocolate tabs for him to really get it on. he doesn't get turned on easily, so with aphrodisiacs for the two of you (because hey! fair game!), you can get a few intimate moments with nagi.
— one tab of chocolate will have nagi breathing heavy, tossing and turning on the bed before he actually calls out to you for help. that will be the only occasion where seishiro nagi actually wants to initiate intimacy with you. cherish it!

It’s almost time to sign up for 007 Fest!
What is 007 Fest?
007 Fest is a month-long July celebration of all things Bond! This year marks our 10th Fest!
This year, the storyline we are following is dueling conferences. Agencies from all over the world are coming together in the spirit of cooperation and trust. It’s JELLYFISH Con!
For four days, agencies will show off their new tech, brag about the skills of their agents, showcase anything and everything. The goal? To form new alliances between agencies, inter-agency agent partnerships that can be called upon in times of need.
Everything is a little tense when trying to get naturally suspicious people to work together, but the biggest challenge might not be anything anyone predicted. It might be the convention happening on the floor below theirs: The International Mystery Writers Convention.
It's up to you, the support staff, the hotel staff, the B team who make things run smoothly to ensure that's what happens this time, too. When you sign up for Fest, start thinking about how you want to fit into this world. It's not critical, but there are some fun bonus challenges that build on some role play elements. Don't worry about which agency you might be a part of; we will be assigning time-zone-based stations for Fest depending on the demographics of sign ups.
During July, decide on your goals at the beginning of each week in July. Completing these weekly goals helps save the conference from that week’s threat! (But if you don’t complete them…well…maybe your station’s part of the conference ends up a little more lava-covered than it was before…yes, even though you’re not anywhere near a volcano… Luckily, you can help each other out!)
More info on our wordpress or our tumblr post.
I don’t write or art! Can I still participate?
Absolutely! If you want, you can only make social goals—hosting or joining watch parties or Discord chats, for example.
We also have fun immersive goals/scavenger hunt activities that don’t involve writing or arting.
Additionally, the ‘creative’ goals don’t have to involve fanfic or fanart; if your weekly goal is to make 5 James Bond memes or three headcanons, we support that!
And if you want to make a “hold my beer” level of goal, we also offer prompt tables and other challenges!
You can also participate without goals during certain weeks or the whole month if you want! 007 Fest is as chill or as high-key as you want to make it.
How can I sign up?
Sign-ups are open June 1st until June 15! Just fill out the form (forthcoming in a reblog) and we’ll contact you around June 18 so you can meet your team. If you’d like to onboard after that, you can, it will just take the mods a little longer.
We look forward to saving the world with you in July! :D

automattic vs wp engine mastterpost
adrienne's GitHub recap is probably the best place to see a comprehensive timeline of what's going down. it's been kept up to date. my (very out of date) previous writeup is here.
what's happened/other links
Matt has not logged off, just switched platforms, so there's lots on X/Twitter, Reddit, and Hacker News. it's really not worth wading through.
WP Engine actually filed suit.
the complaint includes some truly remarkable screenshots of Matt trying to blackmail the CEO of WP Engine.
which... personally i would not happily work for someone who just blackmailed me while not even my boss, but that's just me. he hasn't denied this at all, in fact confirming on Hacker News:
I haven't doxxed any private texts from other parties like they have. [source]
and, notably,
I even invited her to my 40th birthday on Jan 11, another text message she decided not to share. [source]
this gives me the creeps. in the context of the rest of the way he's talking to her, and the ways in which he's interacted with women in general, it's. not great.
also he slid into an ex-employee (also a woman)'s DMs asking why she was being mean to him bc he'd never been nothing but nice to her, while also making legal threats. so y'know, pattern of behaviour.
a good writeup of the social side of things
if you don't care so much about the open-source stuff, Steph Lundberg's writeup is, like her previous one on Matt's Tumblr meltdown, pretty solid and people-focused.
Mullenweg has already demonstrated egregious lapses in judgment and abuses of power, it’s just that up until now he’s wielded his power against vulnerable populations without access to high-powered lawyers and their own massive platforms.
a more technical writeup
this one is melodramatic in the same ways Matt was (uses war terminology), which i don't agree with, and which led to some... internal arguments at Automattic. that part's not my story to tell, but a little more on that later. it's a solid writeup of the actual WordPress side of things. there's some seriously dodgy trademark behaviour going on here.
of note: this blogger locked comments on his post:
and then Matt, uh, found a way around that:
wild!
10% of Automattic leaves
that's a link to Matt's blog post. here's an Internet Archive link.
in short, staff were offered a severance deal of the higher of $30k or six months' salary. while that's very generous, it's still very risky in today's tech market, especially (for the same reasons i mentioned when Matt was melting down on here) for people outside the US, people who need the health insurance, or people with young kids. despite that, 10% decided with very little notice (they had two days to decide) to leave.
However now, I feel much lighter. I’m grateful and thankful for all the people who took the offer, and even more excited to work with those who turned down $126M to stay. As the kids say, LFG!
i'm thrilled to see some of my ex-colleagues make it out. i'm keeping the rest who have stayed on in my thoughts. i don't know anyone who's wholesale shilling for Matt.
Matt's been pressuring staff to post in support of him, @-ing the entire company to vote on Twitter polls in his favor, and so on. many of the people who stayed have written blog posts about it, all starting with "I stayed". people on social media have pointed out the very clear pattern of Automatticians jumping into discourse to defend Matt, and it doesn't look good.
i don't have a lot to say about those posts, except to highlight Jeffrey Zeldman, whose "I stayed" post is perhaps one of the more honest ones. (his Rodney King reference was in poor taste, and he... i don't like his role at automattic, tbc) but like. he's nearly 70. he helped shape the modern internet and develop its accessibility standards. he has often put his neck on the line for disabled staff who don't have as much clout as he does. given the financial troubles he talks about and the state of this market and how old he is, i personally have read between the lines of what he's saying in a particular way.
fuck, man. i'm sad. i'm sad for all my friends who are creaking under the strain and watching others leave but who can't do that. i'm sad that many of them are left in teams which are half-empty or divisions where significant senior leadership are just gone, with no time to document what they had in progress.
i'm sad for Josepha Haden Chomphosy, the former executive director of the WordPress Foundation, who was dealing with a personal emergency and ended up having to miss WordCamp US (where Matt started publicly starting shit with WPE). she came back from that to a gigantic fire in the community she's invested a decade of careful, Matt-negotiating, stewardship to, and decided to take the severance offer. she deserved better.
other things Matt's been up to
mostly linking to comments or posts which compile things here, bc it's too scattered otherwise.
blocking people from the official WordPress X account if they disapprove of his actions.
publicly talking about a vulnerability in ACF, a plugin WPE maintains, which could put thousands of sites at risk. this is not normal, and he met with so much horror even from current staff that he deleted his post.
saying he comes across badly because he's "a little ASD", which is driving me personally up the fucking wall. he's never once said it before and he really is turning into Temu Elon.
generally bragging that he still has more planned. jesus fucking christ

continually saying that WPE's suit is against WordPress.org and the community, which is not true. on which note, his pinned tweet is certainly something:

his choice of lawyer is uh. the kind of guy to defend nestle against literal child slaves.
as always, while i think WordPress crumbling will disproportionately affect websites in poorer parts of the world, there are certainly tyrants who are causing much more immediate and potent suffering. if you've read this far, please do send anything you have spare to gazafunds.com.
#long post#automattic#tumblr meta#this is not a complete writeup. adrienne's link does better#but here's a few things of interest to tumblr probably ig#tony muses

Google & WordPress Partnership to Create News Publishing Platform
Google and WordPress have teamed up to create a new platform for news publishers. This partnership aims to improve the way news is shared and consumed online. The collaboration combines Google’s cutting-edge technology with WordPress's widely used content management system (CMS). Together, they seek to empower news organizations to reach a broader audience and build more engaging digital experiences.

The Significance of the Partnership
The collaboration between Google and WordPress is a major step in the world of digital publishing. WordPress powers over 40% of all websites globally, including many news outlets. Google, on the other hand, is the largest search engine in the world, with millions of people using it every day. By joining forces, these two tech giants plan to offer an all-in-one solution that will help news outlets deliver content more effectively.
This partnership is beneficial for both small and large publishers. It helps level the playing field, allowing smaller outlets to compete with bigger news organizations. It also provides greater access to tools and resources that can improve the quality of news delivery.
What the Platform Offers?
The platform that Google and WordPress have developed offers a range of tools to streamline news publishing. One of the main features is an integration that makes it easier for publishers to display content on Google News. This is crucial for news organizations looking to reach a wider audience.
Publishers can use the platform to manage, distribute, and monetize their content. The platform provides faster page loads, enhanced SEO tools, and improved accessibility for readers. With these tools, publishers can focus on creating great content without worrying about the technical aspects of web development.
Why This Matters for News Publishers?
For news publishers, staying ahead of the curve is crucial. As the media landscape continues to evolve, they need to adopt new technologies to keep up. The partnership between Google and WordPress allows them to do just that. The new publishing platform helps news outlets enhance their visibility and reach through a trusted, user-friendly system.
Moreover, this platform supports a wide range of multimedia, from articles to videos and podcasts. It allows publishers to deliver content in different formats, meeting the demands of modern readers who consume news on various devices.
Benefits for WordPress Users
For users of WordPress, this collaboration means even more powerful tools. WordPress Services have always been popular for their ease of use, but this partnership brings new advantages. WordPress users will benefit from direct integration with Google News. They’ll also have access to advanced publishing features, all through the same platform they already use to manage their websites.
These enhancements will make it easier for WordPress users to optimize their content for search engines. This can help news organizations gain better visibility, driving more traffic to their websites. For businesses that rely on WordPress for content management, this partnership ensures they stay competitive in a fast-changing digital world.
How Google Supports the Platform?
Google brings a wealth of resources and technology to this partnership. Google Search is already a powerful tool that drives traffic to news websites. The new partnership will enhance this by offering a more seamless integration with WordPress. This allows news publishers to easily distribute their content across Google’s various platforms, including Google News.
Google’s tools will help publishers optimize their websites for search engines. With better SEO features, news outlets can improve their ranking and ensure that their content is seen by a larger audience.
