I think a thing that people get wrong about Jason's anger is that it's not explosive.
It's cold. Jason isn't the type of person who storms off at every little thing or goes throwing tantrums and setting things on fire blindfully.
He's the type of person who's very practical. He keeps to himself, always. You rarely see issues where Jason's anger is reactive at the moment where the trigger happens to him. If you see his character up close, most of the time when he's triggered his reaction is calm. Even cold.
He gets triggered -> He keeps to himself → He makes a plan → And then he reacts.
Jason's anger being something explosive and out of character and out of place is actually how other people (characters) see it, because they have no idea on how it's playing out on Jason's head.
And that's a thing you can see operating since he was a child.
Where the only exceptions about this effect is either when someone he believes needs his help is involved.
See Nightwing Annual (2021)
But In Batman #411 when Jason learns the fact that Two-Face was responsible for his father's death and Bruce was keeping that from him as a secret his first reaction isn't to blow up on him.
Was to seethe.
Tumblr media
Bruce goes up home after dealing with a Two-Face case (in my field we call that poetic irony) and asks Alfred where Jason is, Alfred's answer is that he's been sleeping all day (which is a conclusion that Alfred drew probably after going to check on Jason and seeing him in fact on his bed all day).
But when you see the next panel, even though he is on the bed, He's fully awake and both his expression and his body language shows that he's in fact angry.
This is the first time he appears again in the comics after learning that Two Face killed his dad.
Jason doesn't go towards Bruce immediately to demand an explanation or ask why he did this, or even to throw the truth on his face.
(Which could be debatable that that's something the Dick would usually do, but I'm not that literate on Dick's comics)
His reaction wasn't immediate.
His reaction was to go to his bed and stay quiet. Jason stayed calm and collected the whole trip until meeting Two Face again.
Tumblr media
But the moment Jason as Robin has the opportunity to get his hands on Two-Face he does this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From Bruce, and maybe Alfred's perspective it could be interpreted as out of place or him storming off.
But it isn't. Jason was able to keep his cool (even though he shut off), until he was face a face to Two Face.
Does that mean he planned that to happen?
That's debatable, in any moment of this issue it is shown that Jason was actually planning to get to Two Face and do this. I my personal opinion, other and much more plausible explanation is: That he was in fact trying to keep to himself but couldn't hold back the moment that he saw his dad's murder.
You can see the same thing happening as Jason learns that Batman got another Robin in Red Hood: Lost Days.
Tumblr media
Talia asks "You all right?" and Jason's first answer is "Sure Why Wouldn't I Be Alright?"
When he's alone he finally has the moment to break down.
(Actually both Red Hood: The lost days and Batman: Under the Red Hood are great case studies on how that usually play out on Jason's head.)
Jason is way more in control of his emotions than people ever give him credit for. The thing is that Jason holds it back until he either blows off or is capable to throw it back in someone's face.

it always makes me smile when scholars in academic writing refer to the hypothetical reader with she/her. "let the reader experience the battle as if it was unfolding right before her eyes". "a reader accepting her own historicity". "gives the reader the impression that she is following the events". "when a student is asked to write an essay on the aeneid she will normally be encouraged to read some modern criticism". like yeah i see you. i know you did that for me.

I don't know who to send this ask so I'm gonna leave it out here for the public because it just came to me out of the blue: locomotive literature
And I don't mean literature about locomotives, but rather literature written by locomotives
Train biographies detailing their lives on the railway and documenting how things have changed since they were first built
Ghost writers publishing literary works written by trains
Trains with human editors sitting on their buffers as they write down what their engines say and making adjustments for those especially picky or who's words cannot be transcribed because they will be banned otherwise (looking at you Duncan)
Just
Train authors you guys

Between TSATS and WOTTG at this point it seems like Rick has forgotten that Hypnos and Morpheus are actually two separate gods
Possibly one of the most amusing things about this is we DO have canon acknowledgement of Hypnos and Morpheus explicitly being separate gods, including even official art of Morpheus specifically.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...the thing is though, that this book in particular is ghostwritten.
Tumblr media
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

writing is something new for me and i don't know anything so i have question - where can i post my writing?
like, with art i can post here, if its animation - youtube tiktok
and writing? i am about original writing (yeah, that already taken 22 chapters on 130 pages) which i plan to go in audio form and video form (theatre? 😳 well, as a dream...) * and * it should not be under paywall - i want to post it for free, probably not at once - maybe 3 acts separately, maybe chapters. and i want to have control over rights, so it can't be taken from me so i could do audio and video version
sooo. what platform can i use for this?..

Remember, remember.

Traditionally, the magical community doesn’t observe Bonfire Night.
In the late 16th century, King James VI instigated the North Berwick witch trials - the first major persecution of witchcraft in Scotland. On the night of Halloween 1590, King James VI and his bride, Anne of Denmark, were caught up in a storm on the voyage back to Scotland. This misfortune was blamed on witchcraft, which was the start of trials which would last two years.
So it was no surprise that when in 1605 the Gunpowder Plot failed to take out the King, it wasn’t particularly a cause of celebration for magic-users. Their memories and thoughts remained with those persecuted during the trials, tortured til they either confessed or died.
Halloween on the other hand, with roots in Samhain/Samhuinn, is considered the Witches New Year. It’s observed from October 31st to November 1st, and it’s Hogwarts’ biggest event.
People are encouraged to wear their “witchiest” clothes, complete with witches hat.
Bonfires are lit
Turnip lanterns are carved to ward off evil spirits
There’s games involving treacle scones and apples. Braver students can try some of Hagrid’s treacle scones.
Prof Trelawney volunteers to do readings for students, which are very popular amongst couples. Break-ups peak around this time of year.
Among the merriment and festivities, it’s also a time for remembrance of those lost. The time of year where the veil between the world of the living and the world of the dead is at its thinnest.

the clans use salt for healing and cooking if i remember correctly. im only saying this because would someone ever name their kid "saltkit"
Yes! Saltkit is a valid prefix in BB, but only after moving to the Lake.
Before then, they make a sort-of-salt out of burning dandelion root. They consider this material a kind of soot, fine ashes produced by burning something. The rough translation of this spice is "soot-salty-taste."
Salty (taste) = Byyle (Comes from blood-taste)
Soot (ashes produced by finely burning something) = Keybo (Used alone in artsy contexts, usually describes bistre, a pigment made from soot and water.)
Plant Salt (of coltsfoot or dandelion) = Keybyy
To specify if it comes from Dandelion or Coltsfoot, you'd say Keybyy Raerra or Keybyy Hakprru. There aren't two dedicated words for the difference; these are both considered "types of dandelions" by Clan cats.
Dandelion = Awpo Any flowering ground plant with fluffy yellow petals.
This is why they didn't previously have a word for salt itself! They would only ever encounter raw salt as an animal lick, which they'd call Byylebon. Salty-useful-rock. Because it was associated with humans, they wouldn't steal them or interact with them much.
Rraash is a Townmew loanword, a word they adopted for raw, powdered salt during their time trading with BloodClan. At the Lake, they now collect raw sea salt during "Salt Patrols," which are beach trips where a big collection of apprentices are brought to the ocean to learn how to collect and process salt.
So, depending on how the parents would like to name their child, those translations could be;
Byylemew = Saltykit The taste of salt. Could refer to the flavor of blood, the taste of the ocean, or the spice made from burned dandelion roots. Has a very food-y connotation, probably named by gourmands.
Keybyymew = Saltkit, Spicekit, Seasoningkit, Rubkit This is a very ThunderClan sort of name. They traditionally used a lot of keybyy in their recipes, as it's very important for a good marinade and making ham. Though, it wouldn't be too surprising to see it used in WindClan too.
Rraashmew = Saltkit, Brinekit Raw salt. Made from boiling ocean water during large expeditions to the sea called a "Salt Patrol." Used as a medicine AND as a spice, important in controlling parasite infestations, fighting infection, and preserving food. Could just be referring to an off-white colored pelt, food, or even strength in battle for its association with treating wounds.

So. I am running into a problem with my book.
More specifically, I'm having issues with people understanding the scope of the book.
Because I have been working primarily in the Pacific Northwest teaching nature identification classes and so forth, that's the region most folks associate me with. I've been slowly increasing my work in the Midwest, but I only go out there a couple of times a year.
However, The Everyday Naturalist is not just a book about identifying things in the PNW. It discusses skills I've used for nature identification in my own travels, and there's nothing location-specific there. It's meant for anyone, anywhere, who wants to learn the actual process of figuring out what species they've found, even if they have no natural history background whatsoever. I've tried making it REALLY obvious whenever I talk about it in person or online, and even the subtitle is How to Identify Animals, Plants, and Fungi Wherever You Go.
But I still get some people assuming that it's just a field guide to Pacific Northwest life forms. Which is an issue 1) because I don't want non-PNW people thinking it's not for them, and 2) I don't want people who were expecting a book about PNW wildlife to be disappointed. As we're getting closer to the book actually being out (June of next year! Nine months!) and I'm about to start brainstorming with the marketing team at Ten Speed Press, I'm conscious of this misconception and want to keep heading it off at the pass as much as possible.
I am totally fine with continuing to answer the question "Oh, is it just for the Northwest?" because it's a great opportunity to have that conversation. But I'm at a loss for ideas as to how to be clear enough to avoid that question popping up in the first place beyond just elaborating on the book's content and purpose whenever I talk about it.
Which is all to say: I'm open to suggestions!

this trend of trying to market bonafide published books with the tropes inside like it's a fan fiction is actually embarrassing "enemies to lovers, one bed trope, he falls first, morally grey FMC, blah blah blah"
stop trying to co-op fan fiction terminology to artificially build up a fanbase for a work you refuse to describe to us. why should I care what "tags," if you will, this work could have applied to it when I know nothing about the plot or the characters and fundamentally don't care about them yet?

Choose The Next Book I Publish!
Btw, if I don't find a new fandom to get into in the next, oh, couple of weeks, I'm going to go ahead with formatting/editing/publishing my next novel! I'd love for y'all to let me know which of these concepts you would be interested in (all of them are finished & edited manuscripts that just need one final polish/cover design). Whichever one ends WILL be the next book I put out, so choose wisely (or spread to your friends to skew the results, whichever floats your boat).
(Oh, and the "comparisons" here are NOT fanfic-related, it's just to describe the vibes.)
Oh, and if there are any artists who might be interested in making a cover/cover art for a cover, I'm good to commission one! My budget generally runs about 200$ for a cover, so if that's not enough for you, I totally understand, but if you're at all interested, please let me know!

going to poke the hornet’s nest and say that opinions on the site itself & its moderation & content aside, if anyone on this godforsaken site knew how to read a budget or financial statements they would never donate to ay oh three ever again. what do you fucking mean you had net income of 400k last year. they, as a nonprofit, are making twice what they need to cover their expenses basically every year i promise you don’t need to donate another cent. they have a fat fucking reserve. spend your money literally anywhere else

How do you ensure that the dialogue (or other portrayal) of a canon character is true to their personality and (more importantly) way of speaking? Do you spend time studying their "official" dialogue in order to get it sounding authentic? Or did it just come naturally?
I had a good cackle at this because hoo boy does Urianger has a way of speaking! I will be frank with y'all - it did not come naturally initially. I rewatched a lot of his cutscenes and tried to read a lot of his quest text to try and get a grasp of his words, but it took reading about Elizabeathan grammar to actually get the conjugation right.
Eventually, I figured out the conjugation bits of his dialogue and because I like Big Words I was able to mash those together into something that at least resembles Canon Urianger. I've stopped worrying so much about getting him perfectly to canon and just try to make him consistent to myself/the scene I'm writing.
Thanks for the ask!
