Trying to find the latest about this film because I keep thinking about it. (A sci-fi/horror/comedy film with Russell narrating? I am so game!) A couple of articles from February 2024 suggest it will reach Europe somewhere this year, which would be very exciting if true! I'm adding some info about the film and a snippet from an interview about how Russell became part of the project below.
Penned by Clark in March 2021, the film reverberates with the pulse of American politics of that time —drawing from COVID, Qanon, and constant states of anxiety— while exploring themes of confusion, isolation, and the deep need for human connection through the story of two body-snatching alien lovers. Dropped to Earth and escaping their dying planet, the two extraterrestrials (played by a sequence of actors) seek each other out —jumping from body to body— on our planet while becoming increasingly drawn into the madness of modern-day America. “The beauty of The Becomers is its uniqueness; the film successfully touches so many different genres and wraps them all up with a backdrop of US politics — which can be a horror or comedy movie in itself,” said Dark Star president Michael Repsch. “We could not be more thrilled to be working with Zach and bringing his zany brainchild to audiences in 2024.” “I made The Becomers to capture the way 2020 felt for me,” said Clark, “and it’s been both moving and unnerving to see that feeling continue to resonate with audiences. I’m so excited to be working with Dark Star to get this thing out into the weird, wild world.” Source: https://www.horrorsociety.com
From an interview with Zach Clark:
KC: (...) How did you get Russell Mael from the band Sparks? When I heard his voice I was like, Oh my gosh that’s Russell! ZC: They’ve been one of my favorite bands since high school, and during COVID, a friend of mine was hosting these sort of like secret movie clubs, Zoom screenings, where he would send people a file and we would all download it. We’d all log into zoom, we all hit play on the same movie at the same time, and then chat about it on Zoom and talk about it afterwards. They went really well and he started getting guests to Zoom in for Q and A’s after the movies. Just like for 50 or so people are watching on Zoom and he got Sparks and Ron and Russell to zoom in afterwards. He knew I was a big fan, and he sent them a link to Little Sister. They watched it and really liked it, and so I connected on Zoom with them. Summer of 2020 was very surreal to be zooming with your favorite band. It was just really as simple as I was trying to think of someone who would be a good narrator for the movie. As you often do in independent film, you think of who you have access to or who you’re one or two degrees away from. You know, I was able to get Russell’s contact info and I reached out to him and said hey, remember when we zoomed in the summer of 2020 and you watched my last movie? I’m making a new one, would you be interested in narrating it, and there was a cut of the movie where I did all the temp narration while we were editing it into my phone just to see what works and what didn’t work. I sent him that and he basically said yes. They’re a very important band for me, and I think Russell’s voice brings a lot. KC: His voice reminds me of something alien-like or something from out of this world, so I get the picture of that. Source: https://film-fest-report.com

A Fantasia Festival 2023 PREVIEW

2024 BUFF - Dispatch #4
Green’s Party is proud to be covering the 2024 Boston Underground Film Festival, which kicked off last night at the Brattle Theatre (Cambridge, MA).  I’ve been lucky enough to cover the festival since 2016. Here is my 2024 coverage so far.
Sat. kicked off early afternoon with one of my favorite programs of the festival Sound + Vision, a collection of music videos. The same way a festival does a program of short films, BUFF always puts together a collection of cool music videos. This year's program included a good one from The Chemical Brothers and Beck's "Skipping like a Stone" as well as a very gory one from The Hives for "Bogus Operondi"!

movie poster for The Becomers
I didn't get to attend BUFF in-person on Saturday, but I did get to watch the screener for The Becomers. Director Zach Clark is a veteran of BUFF and his film Little Sister was one of the highlights of 2016, where I got to interview him. His new one is a wild road movie about aliens inhabiting humans and swapping bodies periodically as they discover American life. I wished I had seen this with an audience as it would've gotten quite a response. It even has Russell Mael of Sparks narrating.
Today: last day of the festival includes With Love and a Major Organ and Boy Kills World.
For tickets and info on 2024 BUFF
Stay tuned to Green’s Party for my coverage of this year’s fest!

Do you think Superman sometimes eats stuff he shouldn't to freak people out
Like, he'll be in a Justice League meeting, and he'll just start casually eating a chair

one thing about me is i WILL treat silly little improvised musicals like full scripted media. i’ve written cornhole in one fic. i know all the mallapalooza kids’ last names. i have designs for many off book/pibe characters that look nothing like zach and jess. off book episode 66 we object to fear live from the curious comedy theater in portland is no longer a podcast episode to me it is the jumping off point for an entire world that i created and spent the better part of a year being absolutely fucking insane about

"All my best friends are here. Clark, Lois, Bruce... is that a trace of regret I see behind that steely smile? I hope so. Ralph and Sue. They're not dead anymore. Good for them. And there he is. My man, my everything. Sonny Raymond, the man who stole my heart and soul. Stole me completely... forever."

I love lines that are poking fun at another player’s stupid worldbuilding that they’re stuck with.
Clark: “So just to confirm, it was *MANY* of you on *ONE* unicycle?”
Bryce: “That was how we *ALL* got hurt in *A* unicycle accident.”

Is it weird that I’m hoping Conageddon will somehow spark my creativity and finally break through my writer’s block? Yes, probably, but I’m getting desperate at this point, so if you’re attending (lucky 😉), please post ALL the content possible.

Preview: 2024 Boston Underground Film Festival
The Boston Underground Film Festival returns to the Brattle Theatre (Cambridge, MA) from Wed. March 20 to Sun. March 24, 2024! The fest is now in it's 24th edition celebrating bizarre, weird and alt cinema!
Tumblr media
Here at Green’s Party, I’ve been lucky enough to cover the festival since 2016 (the fest took off in 2020 and 2021, and I was unable to attend 2022, but I returned in 2023). Here are some of the highlights of this year’s BUFF:
Wed. March 20:
Opening Night film is the East Coast Premiere of Immaculate, which stars current It Girl Sydney Sweeney as a nun in a new covenant as nightmarish things start happening. The film opens nationwide on Friday from Neon, but BUFF fans get to see the East Coast Premiere! Then it's time for the North American Premiere of the new restoration of the 1990 Hong Kong action film Fatal Termination.
Thurs. March 21:
Day 2 kicks off with a Strange Kindness, which was filmed in Cape Cod and focuses on a small town shaken by a violent crime resulting in a house to house manhunt. This thriller is joined by the VT filmed short The Thaw. Then it's Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person (CANADA), a vampire coming-of-age film. Then it's Femme (U.K.), set in London's drag scene where a victim of a homophobic attack encounters the assailant months later in a gay sauna and slowly plots revenge.
Fri. March 22:
The day kicks off at 5PM with The Dunwich Horrors, a short program made up of all New England-based horror stories. Then it's the road movie Off Ramp about some Juggalos making their way through the South and a series of misadventures ensue. Sleep (KOREAN) is about an expectant couple in which the husband is developing a dangerous sleepwalking habit.
Sat. March 23:
One of my favorite portions of BUFF is the Sound + Vision music video program. This year there's 27 music videos including some from The Hives, The Chemical Brothers and more. One of the highlights of 2016 BUFF was Little Sister, directed by Zach Clark (who I interviewed at the fest). Now he's back with the alien road movie The Becomers. A deadly infestation of spiders in a French apartment building is the center of Infested (FRANCE) from Shudder.
Sun. March 24:
In the afternoon there's With Love and a Major Organ (CANADA) set in an alternate world where hearts are made of objects and suppressing emotions, a woman literally gives a suitor her heart and it sets this drama in motion. Omen (BELGIUM) was actually Belgium's submission for Best International Feature to the Academy Awards this past year. It's about a Congolese expat who prepares to return home to present his pregnant girlfriend to his family. Then the Closing Night film is Boy Kills World (GERMANY / SOUTH AFRICA / USA), which boasts the most star power with Bill Skarsgard, Famke Jannsen (who I worked with on Monument Ave), Sharlto Copley and was produced by Sam Raimi. It's about a man who was orphaned as a child and deaf, but he becomes a killing machine and adapts the voice of his favorite video game. The trailer has some very Matrix-like action to it!
