Artificial Sweetener's Pitfalls (Sucralose)(chemistry-8)
Tumblr media
sucralose
Slat: a Japanese beverage. Ingredients: alcohol 3%, grapefruit juice, pulp, vegetable fiber (polydextrose), sugar (70% off), acidulant, flavoring, sweetener (acesulfame K, sucralose)
It contains substances that are quite unfamiliar. Acesulfame K, sucralose... No one will drink after reading this, but it's kind of creepy.
Acesulfame K is also a mystery, but Acesulfame K contains sulfur (S) in its cyclic structure and is quite a unique substance, and sucralose is an “organic chlorine compound”! ! This kind of chemical substances includes PCBs, dioxins, trihalomethanes, etc., and many of them have "carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, and teratogenicity" with a considerable probability.
An organic chlorine compound is a compound in which a chlorine atom (Cl) is directly bonded to a carbon atom (C), and it hardly exists in nature. There is only one case where a certain type of microorganism has produced an organochlorine compound, but this organism is reusing it "as an antibiotic". Organochlorines are the most toxic.
"Sucrose" means "sugar", but the name is somewhat confusing. The artificial sweeteners contained in this drink are 200 and 600 times sweeter than sugar, respectively, so these sweeteners are often mixed and used.
"Are you taking into consideration the metabolism in your body?" Aside from substances such as sugar that are absorbed by the body and confirmed until the end of metabolism, whether they are properly decomposed or not, whether the metabolites are safe, and if they are not metabolized, whether they remain in the body. Is it being discharged or are you doing research properly? And how do you perceive the fact that decades ago sweeteners such as cyclamate and saccharin were banished from the market because they were considered dangerous?

What do artificial sweetners do to duckweed?? Now I'm CURIOUS
Okay, I have to preface this by saying that I wrote an individual research report like, 4 years ago about this, and all this information is learned from research papers I sited.
So the thing with artificial sweeteners is the fact that they can't be digested and they can't decompose. Along with that, waste water treatment plants (WWTPs) can't filter them out (or at least they said that in this source from 2018). This means that the water that is released out still contains these EOCs (emerging organic contaminants) (SOURCE)
There are these 5 artificial sweeteners: aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame K, saccharine, and stevioside. Out of these 5, aspartame and sucralose had negative effects on duckweed (SOURCE) (SOURCE)
However, the 2 sources above are from 2016 and 2018, and this 2022 study says that sucralose doesn't affect the ecosystem and that WWTPs can filter out artificial sweeteners . However however, this 2022 study doesn't mention aspartame.
I'm no way an expert on this, and I only have a very very vague idea of this because of an assignment from 4 years ago, sooooooooooo ye :D

About that diet soda and cilantro thing.thats a actual thing about diet soda? Really? Cause that might explain ALOT
yup! some people seem to have a genetic variation that means certain sweeteners activate their bitter taste receptors so the sweeteners end up tasting bad to them.
the information I've seen has generally been about acesulfame-K which happens to be in a lot of diet soda and similar low-sugar products, and this article says that finding acesulfame-K bitter doesn't necessarily mean something like stevia will taste bitter:

Acesulfame Potassium Prices | Pricing | Price | News | Database | Chart | Forecast
Acesulfame potassium Prices, also known as Ace-K, is a widely used artificial sweetener found in many sugar-free and diet products. In recent years, the prices of acesulfame potassium have been influenced by several factors, reflecting the complexities of global supply chains and market demands. One of the primary factors affecting acesulfame potassium prices is the fluctuation in raw material costs. The production of acesulfame potassium involves several chemical processes that require specific raw materials. When the prices of these raw materials increase, manufacturers often pass on the costs to consumers, leading to higher prices for acesulfame potassium. Additionally, the cost of energy and labor can also impact production costs.
Global trade dynamics also play a crucial role in determining the prices of acesulfame potassium. Tariffs, trade policies, and international relations can affect the import and export of this sweetener. For instance, trade tensions between major economies can lead to increased tariffs, making it more expensive to import acesulfame potassium from certain countries. This can create supply shortages and drive up prices. On the other hand, favorable trade agreements can facilitate easier access to acesulfame potassium, potentially lowering prices.
Another significant factor is the demand for sugar substitutes in various industries, including food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products. As consumers become more health-conscious and seek low-calorie alternatives to sugar, the demand for acesulfame potassium has increased. This heightened demand can push prices higher, especially if the supply does not keep pace. Manufacturers often need to balance between meeting the growing demand and managing their production capacities to avoid overproduction or shortages, both of which can impact prices.
Get Real Time Prices for Acesulfame potassium: https://www.chemanalyst.com/Pricing-data/acesulfame-potassium-1348
Technological advancements in production processes have also influenced acesulfame potassium prices. Improvements in manufacturing efficiency can lead to lower production costs, which might be reflected in the prices of the final product. However, investing in new technology and upgrading facilities requires significant capital, and manufacturers may need to recoup these costs through pricing adjustments.
The competitive landscape within the artificial sweeteners market is another crucial aspect. Acesulfame potassium competes with other sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, and stevia. The pricing strategies of these alternatives can influence the price of acesulfame potassium. For instance, if the price of a competing sweetener drops significantly, manufacturers of products containing acesulfame potassium might feel pressured to lower their prices to remain competitive. Conversely, if competitors raise their prices, there may be less pressure to keep acesulfame potassium prices low.
Regulatory changes and health guidelines also have a profound impact on the market. Government regulations regarding food additives and sweeteners can affect production costs and pricing. Stricter regulations might require manufacturers to make costly adjustments to their production processes, thereby increasing prices. Moreover, changes in health guidelines and public perception of artificial sweeteners can influence demand. For example, if new research suggests potential health benefits or risks associated with acesulfame potassium, consumer demand could shift, impacting prices accordingly.
Economic factors, such as inflation and currency exchange rates, also play a role in determining acesulfame potassium prices. Inflation can increase the cost of production inputs, leading to higher prices for the sweetener. Similarly, fluctuations in currency exchange rates can impact the cost of importing raw materials and exporting the final product. For example, a weaker domestic currency can make imports more expensive and exports more competitive, influencing the overall pricing strategy.
In summary, the prices of acesulfame potassium are influenced by a myriad of factors including raw material costs, global trade dynamics, demand and supply balance, technological advancements, competitive landscape, regulatory changes, supply chain disruptions, and economic conditions. Manufacturers and consumers alike must navigate these complexities to understand and respond to the changing prices of this widely used artificial sweetener. Keeping abreast of these factors can help stakeholders make informed decisions in the dynamic market for acesulfame potassium.

アセスルファムカリウム (Acesulfame Potassium) の価格動向: 詳細チャート、市場分析、将来の見通し
Tumblr media

I've been doing a lifestyle change and ive been cooking all my food at home ans trying to minimize eating processed food if I can help it. My question is, I want to eat pasta so bad but I know pasta is like horrible for you. Is there any way I will ever be able to eat pasta again 😭 I see so many pasta recipes and I feel so jealous
What makes you think that pasta is horrible for you? It's usually just flour, salt, egg, and water, so unless you have celiac disease or are allergic to eggs, it should be totally fine. In fact, whole grain pasta is part of the blue zone diet, which is generally considered to be the best way you can eat for optimal long-term health and well-being (at least as of right now in July 2024). You can even make pasta at home- there are a bunch of pasta makers on Amazon that you can buy for under $30 USD.
As far as processed food goes, I think it's kind of a poorly defined topic in nutrition right now. Virtually all foods that we eat are "processed" in some way, even if you're buying them directly from a farmer. Selective breeding of certain foods, the way that we've been doing since the beginning of agriculture, is technically a "process". Things like cutting, washing, heating, pasteurizing, canning, cooking, packaging, etc. are also "processes". And everything you buy in a grocery store requires some amount of preservation in order for it to stay edible from the farms or factories to the store and to remain edible until someone buys it.
When people talk about minimizing processed foods, what they're typically referring to is ultra-processed foods- things that are the result of intensive manufacturing processes. The hallmarks of these kind of foods are that they're ready to eat off the shelf and contain preservatives, dyes, colors, added flavors, non-sugar sweeteners, and other human-created ingredients.
However, it's unclear what part of these ultra-processed foods are actually bad for us. Is is that they're engineered to have an optimal mouth feel, so we eat more than we need to? Is it that when we eat ultra-processed foods, we're missing out on fiber and nutrients that we would normally get from our food, and thus have a less nutritionally complete diet? Is it that ultra-processed foods are easier for our bodies to digest, so we're not burning as many calories through digestion as we would otherwise, leading to weight gain over time? Is it that there's some chemical or manufacturing process that's unhealthy on its own? We actually don't know yet. In all likelihood, it's some combination of the above, but we're still in the beginning stages of understanding all of this.
So all that said, generally speaking, it seems that the most important thing is to have a diet that's calorically appropriate for your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), and that's nutritionally complete, especially when it comes to fiber intake. Secondarily, a diet where your calories are 50-60% from carbohydrates, 15-20% from protein, and 30% from fats, with at most 8% of your calories from saturated fats and at most 10% from sugar, is the next most important. After that, avoiding ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, artificial sweeteners (such as aspartame or acesulfame-K), preservatives (like benzoic acid, calcium sorbate, ertyhorbic acid, potassium nitrate, sodium benzoate, butylated hydroxyanisole, butylated hydroxytoluene, and ascorbyl palmitate) may be a good idea, although again, the jury is still out on whether or not those ingredients are actually causing any negative effects on their own.
The other thing I want to mention here is that there are other factors that impact health way more than ultra-processed foods do. Smoking causes about 20% of all cancers, 4–8% of all cancers are attributed to obesity (regardless of diet) and can raise your risk for 13 different types of cancer, and nearly 4% of cancers can be attributed to alcohol consumption. Around 20% of people in the US will get skin cancer in their lifetime, which can be prevented by daily sunscreen use. Physical inactivity is also one of the leading risk factors for illness in general- people who are insufficiently active (less than 150 minutes a week) have a 20% to 30% increased risk of death from all causes compared to people who do exercise. My point here isn't to scare you or anything, but rather just to say that if you're interested in improving your health overall, those items will make a way bigger difference than cutting pasta out of your diet will.

Is now impossible to get good Dr Pepper.
Produced in the USA: high-fructose corn syrup! 🤮
Produced in the UK: New Recipe Now With Added Artificial Sweeteners (Aspartame + Acesulfame K) Instead Of Just Sugar!! 🤮
FUCKING BULLSHIT!!!!!
I'm so fucking mad! This is so fucking bullshit!
We can never have something that's just good! Everything must be sacrificed in pursuit of infinite economic growth! It's not enough to have a good recipe and to just stick to that, when instead you can come up with a bullshit new recipe that's cheaper to produce by 2¢/L or whatever their bullshit fucking numbers are!
Can't do regular shrinkflation because 330ml is THE standardised can and it's not worth retooling the entire fucking supply chain from factories to trucks to vending machines just to knock 25ml off the volume.
So instead let's do shrinkflation on our ingredients!! Downsize the amount of sugar we put in and make up the difference with artificial sweeteners!
Oh wow! Our profits increased by 2%! Genius! Flawless plan! Totally worth ruining the recipe! Give it a few years for customers to get used to the difference while we keep on futzing with the sugar/aspartame ratios until it's eventually 100% artificial sweeteners! Then we make even more money while at the same time our marketing department is busy busy busy patronisingly lecturing consumers to stop complaining about it because don't they know that consuming less sugar is good for you??? We've ✨ Done You A Favour ✨ actually, by ruining the taste of your beloved beverages. We were only thinking of you and you're welcome btw.
Truely living up to the ideology of a cancer cell. Infinite unrestrained growth at all costs.
RIP Dr Pepper. You were so good while you lasted. Now it literally leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

Today, as I perused the aisles of the local supermarket in eager anticipation of enhancing our forthcoming weekend festivities with the addition of a fine ginger ale, I was met with disappointment of the highest order. Oh, Canada Dry, once the epitome of ginger ale excellence, now tainted by the inclusion of Acesulfame K and fructose within its once pristine formula.
Yet, as I grappled with this disheartening revelation, it became apparent that Sprite, once a stalwart companion in carbonated refreshment, had also fallen prey to the siren call of fructose. And let us not overlook the seemingly refined London Essence, whose elegant exterior belies the presence of artificial sweeteners within.
The perplexing question arises: why must these effervescent libations, designed to tantalize the taste buds and quench the thirst, betray our trust with their dubious additives? Are we but unwitting pawns in a grand game of consumer manipulation, sacrificed at the altar of corporate gain?
Alas, the prospect of indulging in Shirley Temples at our gathering now seems a distant dream. Instead, I shall raise a glass of Liquid Death sparkling water, a beacon of purity in a sea of saccharine deception, and ponder the whims of fate in the modern marketplace.

Some of the most common artificial sweeteners found in protein powders include:
Sucralose: It is one of the most widely used artificial sweeteners in the food industry. This sweetener is 600 times sweeter than sugar and can withstand high temperatures.
Acesulfame Potassium (Ace-K): It is a calorie-free sweetener commonly used in protein powders and other low-calorie products. It often partners with other sweeteners like stevia and monk fruit extract to mask a bitter aftertaste. It is known for being 200 times sweeter than sugar itself.
Aspartame: It is another commonly used artificial sweetener found in many protein powders. It is known by names like Equal or NutraSweet, aspartame is infamous not just for its sweetness but also for its controversial health discussions. Fortunately, Aspartame is becoming less and less common in protein powders.
Saccharin: Saccharin is one of the oldest artificial sweeteners and is still used in some protein powders today. Although considered safe in small amounts. With trade names like Sweets' Low, saccharin was once linked to bladder cancer in rats, casting long shadows over its safety profile.
Neotame: Neotame is a relatively new artificial sweetener that is much sweeter than sucralose or aspartame. While it has been deemed safe for consumption by regulatory agencies, long-term studies on its safety are limited.
