I feel like people often don’t talk about the experiences of disabled people who have caretakers because so much of the conversation is about us—not including us.
I receive in home care for 30 hours a week (+ 4 hours/week for respite). This is paid for by Medicaid (state insurance). Outside of paid hours, my primary caretakers care for me unpaid and assist me most of the time. I’m very rarely left alone due to my high support needs. Often, when I am left alone, I am completely bedridden or at minimum housebound. I have frequent emergency life threatening health problems, falls, and serious injuries even with support in place, and these things significantly increase when I’m on my own.
I’m extremely lucky that my paid caretakers are my partner, my sister (the only family member I have regular contact with, I’m estranged from the rest of my immediate family and most of my extended family) and my best friend.
I used to have agency staffing which was horrible for me and borderline traumatic. At several points, before doing the self directed care option (which allows me to choose my own staff, hire and train them myself and dictate hours for them), I opted to not have any staffing. I was regularly in the emergency room. I can’t drive, so I was having to walk and if I was lucky enough to be able to take the bus on occasion or get a ride from a Facebook acquaintance, they were few and far in between. I don’t have family support, and even my sister who is supportive wasn’t living in the state at the time and doesn’t have a car most of the time.
And before I could even choose which staffing option, even though medically it had been deemed essential for me to have in home care, even though my insurance covered it, I had to wait several years (I was 18 when I was approved) until I was 21 to qualify to start. The reason why: I was legally an “adult disabled child” because of my high support needs (which is funny because I STILL don’t have SSI at age 24) and thus legally unable to consent to my own care plan. I needed a blood relative to consent, and that same blood relative (who had to have proof of such!) couldn’t care for me. At the time, my sister was the only person who could’ve been my caregiver and also she is the only verifiable blood relative I have contact with for safety reasons, and my only relative on this side of the USA.
The first business day after my 21st birthday I immediately got things set up to get in home care.

This is out of date, I get assistance with more than just these highlighted ADL (activities of daily living) tasks now.
In short: my day-to-day life is entirely dependent on others.
And there’s power imbalances that exist between me and my caregivers, even with my current caregivers being amazing and anti-ableist. They will always exist. We talk about the power dynamics of me being dependent on them for my survival, and how heavy that weight can be for each of us.
Having caregivers often means that accessibility is extra difficult— I’ve been told straight up multiple times that I can’t have assistance from my caregivers to help me change in a changing room when we’re out shopping. That they can’t go into the bathroom with me, that they can’t help me get un/dressed during appointments, that they can’t come into spaces with me.
I’ve been denied access to psychiatric care because I can’t do my daily living tasks (ADLs- the highlighted items) independently. And when I’m in a hospital or emergency room, I can’t have my in home workers be paid to care for me, there’s an expectation that the nursing staff at the hospital will do it. Even though my caregivers were specifically trained to learn my body and needs for weeks and have been working with me for years. I have severe cPTSD and showering in front of a stranger is something I cannot do. I would rather fall or faint or get injured or just not shower than deal with that. But I’m expected to just let anyone have access to my body just because I’m physically disabled and need support.
When I faint/fall/get injured/have life threatening health issues arise while I’m not clothed, or when I’m otherwise vulnerable, I’m supposed to let strangers just touch me however they want to. I have to show them my chest (for my cardiac care) and let them poke and examine me. I can’t object without losing access to vital care.
I have agency. I have rights. I have autonomy. I deserve to be able to exercise these things.

Eating chilli is in fact an activity of daily living. I just forget that avoiding things because I can't do them counts as not being able to do them (if that makes any sense). I don't struggle to do these things because I don't do these things.
This came about because I was planning to apply for the disability tax credit but I didn't think I met the conditions since I need to struggle with activities of daily living as a result of my disability and my friend had to remind me that eating chilli (i.e., the ability to keep down food) counts.

These made me cry in relief and validation. I struggle with ADLs a lot of the time. My house is a wreck right now, and I don’t have the energy to do much about it. Finding ways to work with yourself within your abilities is important. Running the dishwasher three times is better than never having a clean dish to eat off of, even if you’ve been taught not to run the dishwasher more than once. Eating something is better than eating nothing. Paper plates are sometimes your friend. Buying clothes that you don’t have to dry clean is an OK way to live.
I hope these help someone else who is struggling with the self-judgment that can come with the struggle to adequately perform activities of daily living.

Today and yesterday I had two video appointments. The one today was supposed to be in person at the hospital but my dad came back from a work trip to Germany and now we all have COVID :(. I feel horrible but some good things were talked about in this appointment so that’s positive at least.
Unfortunately my physical ability has been rapidly declining and continuing to get worse. My coordination, balance, fine motor skills, motor planning, weakness (especially on my left side), etc. is all getting worse every day.
I am struggling more and more with bADLs (bathing, eating, mobility, etc.). My suspected autistic catatonia is getting much worse. I am very anxious about how bad things are and why I have all these symptoms.
However I am trying to still be hopeful about possibilities for the future and what my life might be like with certain adaptive equipment and so on.
Here’s the things that are going to happen soon (hopefully):
Going to look into how to access physio both via GP and Mandy (my OT) through paediatric physio.
Getting new cutlery to help make eating easier.
Referral to get social worker to help with transition to adult care.
Mandy to try and sort a bath hoist/bath lift and new profiling bed.
Orthotics referral for braces to help with walking.
STCTI referral for AAC that I can actually use (new program and device with switches and/or eye gaze).
Writing and typing is getting more difficult so it’s hard to post here even though I have so much to say. My mum helped me write this (thanks mum). I would love to post more.

Make them connect the dots to learn new alphabets. Create letters out of Play-Doh or using shaving cream. They’ll have fun. If you have young children, assist them in learning the alphabet and the sounds that each letter makes. It is a fun filled Learning Activities ,Young children are interested in learning about colors. Alice liked to imagine him quickened by the feeling of burrowing into a project, returning to it day after day, grooming it, feeding it, worrying and bleeding it, as he slipped into that fugue state when it’s just you and the project, a project that no one is waiting for or cares about other than you.

Living life to the fullest & “YOLO!”
Living life to its fullest, after all, YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE!
Okay so, I have trouble with living in the moment, probably everyone else does too. So, What do I do? Yell yolo and Juno off a cliff? Yes! Exactly! For anyone having trouble living in the moment here’s what helps me (an adrenaline junkie) to throw their worry’s behind himself and live a little.
Rock climbing ZERO GEAR! JUST LUCK! I am in no means experienced enough for doing this, I slipped like one hundred times when I did this yesterday, I rolled down the mesa, hit my head, fell in a weed, and then got back up cause I was hungry and I had to get up this mountain if I wanted to get home and eat Nutella by the spoon full
Hike to no where. Walk on down to a state or territorial park/reserve don’t even look at the map just walk, get silly with it, left, left, right, do a little spin, close your eyes and skip off into the sun set, doesn’t matter! Also try not to get to lost….. print a map just in case, (DO NOT LOOK AT IT YOU LITTLE DUMBIE IT WILL SPOIL THE ADVENTURE!)
Go to a river or brook in drought season. They have little fresh water tide pools to poke your fingers in. you can see all the fishies and turtles. You can catch those little shrimp things that swim around. You can draw all the little stuff swimming around like your a scientist documenting a new species!
Get a group of friends (Stephanie, Dainn, Oskar I got our weekend ready, don’t you know! Hehe >:3) go to the city! Walk around the cityscape and shoppes, or maybe go to a mall. Money is a must have! When me and my friends go into town for an outing we usually get some lunch, go to the cinema, or sit in the library! Maybe go to the market :D
Play games. Get a game like truth or dare, Medusa, 20 questions, Author, Picnic, Slap or Kiss, Spin the bottle dance version, Uno, monopoly, Shamoply, or whatever! Add extra rules to make it extra silly! Examples: Candy, Drinks, Uno cards, Punishments like dumping ice down your shirt, or listening to horrible music.
Bike rides. Always nice to spice a weekend up and get your steps in. You get to burn those calories and build those muscles! DO YOU FEEL THAT!!?? >:D I like making a goal, so you aren’t just biking with no rhyme or reason. Like I’ll bike to the aquarium, café, boat dock, beach, surprise your friend and show up on his doorstep (SOUNDS LIKE SOMEONE HUH OSKAR)
Go snorkeling. Doesn’t have to be anything special, just get some goggles and a body of water. I literally just go the creek and swim around. I almost never swim like that at the actual beach (now that I think about that I should that sounds fun lol)
Cliff diving. This is so much fun, it’s exactly like “Twilight“ I tell you! There is some safety measures before you do this so you don’t die. Swim down to the bottom of where you jumping from, it should be a 1 meter for every meter your jumping from. If your jumping seven meters than the water should b 6–7 meters deep. Make sure there’s nothing sharp jutting out from the bottom like sunken logs big boulders, an alligator or snake (by then it’s probably to late ;–;) and then jump to your hearts content!
Make snacks. For example you could make charcuterie boards with a theme. Fill up a bowl with a pieces of paper that say something like “Make (insert food or drink) with (insert this theme, example: Your ex bf/gf or ex bestie, political leader, global warming, stereotype (only if you are the culture that stereotype comes from) making the prompts controversial makes it hilarious XD
Get 1 other person and read Y/N fan fictions dramatically or in a posh accent. Whoever laughs first has to read the next one or has to chuff water do a dare something like that.
Thank you for reading! I hope this helps! Don’t be shy, tag me or leave a comment on how it worked out for you :3!

Beyond Our Comprehension - A Function of Vitality, Mortality, and Morbidity
What is vitality to you?
Vitality is said to be our activity. Defined as a state of being strong and active from the Latin vitalitas (vital). The Energy we have for life. Is it a necessary rule for the continuance of life? Maybe an inherent aspect in all living things, a part of our evolution. Our mortality takes effect from our genes. Those sufferings from birth are imprinted in our DNA. As such is life, we make choices…
