Sword gays showdown, round 1, bracket three
Propaganda:
For Eowyn:
All she wants to do is fight and kill and defend her people. She killed the Witch King!!!
For Darling Charming:
Darling Charming is the embodiment of the inherent lesbianism of being the Knight in shining armour who rescues the princesses and also being a woman. Her entire character concept is inherently gay.
Darling disguises herself as a white knight despite being told she's destined as a Damsel in Distress all her life for her story. She excels in swordfighting in secret, helped save Wonderland, and eventually wakes up the character destined to be Snow White with true love's first kiss.

I unfortunately don't have much more in regards to divine warriors stuff so this might be the last one for the moment, and this is fully getting into a fanfic I may or may not start writing about Garroth and a male oc of Kul'Zak
Despite common belief, I don't think Laurence is Kul'Zak reincarnation, I think he is Shads/the coming relic weilder. There is no rule that states that their can't be two relic weilders or reincarnations at the same time. Hell, it actively supports that idea on cannon. Laurence is a wanderer as much as he is a man of fierce passion, one that you could equate for a forest fire. Something that is inherently Shad. Aaron and Laurence both seem to be two sides of the same coin in regards to Shad as well. Loving passionately to the point of detriment.
Zane and Garroth were both very much parts of Esmund as well, both fiercely protective and loyal except one was loyal to himself and the other was loyal to others. So it feels like it further proves my point.
I also know that the most sheltered and stuck up men want what they cannot have, the unobtainable, but Irene was never truly out of Esmunds reach, he just had to learn that she wasn't just his. Same with Garroth and his love interest. There was nothing stopping either except themselves, but unlike Esmund, Garroth can learn. whether or not he does will take work.
Esmund, objectively wanted to contain, it's why his magic is so good at shielding Nether portals. Garroth wants to protect, and it was how he was even able to activate his relic in the first place.
I also feel that the first shadow knights were not followers of Shad but instead selfish followers of Esmund, as a big f-you to the man. The majority of shadow knights are guards, after all, while twisted after repeated torture in the Nether, they still at the base of things want to protect. For Shad had what Esmund could never, but Irene was never really Shads friend like she was Esmunds.
Kul'Zak, on the other hand, was very unproblematic, and he and Hyria were a gay disaster and a pan panic, respectively. My first idea of the actual meet between all of the divine and Kul'Zak is very similar to this animatic on YouTube. (Ximena Natzel animatic of Wouldn't You Like from Epic: The Musical)
I will accept anything you have to tell me it doesn’t have to be DW

if you were in charge of steven universe would you rather have had them actually kill off the diamonds/acklowedge the fact their fascist and treat them as such, or tone down the diamonds warcrimes to make them more redeemable OR just like. not just the dimaonds exist at all? which would be the better writing decision for the overall quality of the show?
I actually think the whole "estranged family mystery" story is compelling. I'd probably remove the ENTIRE rebellion storyline from it.
Steven Universe's biggest problem was ALWAYS the fact that its story was constantly weighed down by distractions, anime references, and new ideas thrown into darling baby's trough as an aside. The strength of the writing lies in quiet, emotional moments and yet it is almost constantly subjecting itself to a loud, bombastic climax whenever one has to occur.
Becky's actually good ideas are constantly being buried under anime she watched as a child and didn't understand half the themes of, and anime she DID understand but sucked.
All of this isn't helped by the fandom inspirational inbreeding of going from Princess Knight to Rose of Versailles to Revolutionary Girl Utena to Steven Universe, where each link in the chain is subjected to the way fandom flanderizes and waters down a work to something more palatable to fandom culture.
And Steven Universe is the last link in the chain so we go from "Girls can swordfight to protect their homes" to "Girls can swordfight and maybe be gay" to "Girls can swordfight and be gay and also the violence of slavery is inherent in the system and you won't save your girlfriend from it by being a 'benevolent' master" to "Sorry I missed that last bit I was too busy squeeing over the aesthetic, anyway here's a slave being deeply in love with her master."
Most of the show's problems would have been solved if Becky had just calmed the hell down with all the anime. This isn't even an "anime bad" statement, this happens with anything you're too obsessed with.

queerness in The Remarkable Retirement of Edna Fisher
book description
when you’re an old woman armed with nothing but gumption and knitting needles, stopping a sorcerer from wiping out an entire dragon-fighting organization is a tall order. no one understands why 83-year-old Edna Fisher is the Chosen One, destined to save the Knights from a dragon-riding sorcerer bent on their destruction. after all, Edna has never handled a magical weapon, faced down a dragon, or cast a spell. and everyone knows the Council of Wizards always chooses a teenager—like the vengeful girl ready to snatch Edna’s destiny from under her nose.
still, Edna leaps at the chance to leave the nursing home. with a son long dead in the Knights’ service, she’s determined to save dragon-fighters like him & ensure other mothers don’t suffer the same loss she did. but as Edna learns about the abuse in the ranks & the sorcerer’s history, she questions if it’s really the sorcerer that needs stopping—or the Knights she’s trying to save.
find it here
okay let's talk about queerness in this book
did a thread on twitter in which I said "cishet" five hundred thousand times so will probably get banned lmao but anyway I wanted to share it here too
especially since it's late in Pride Month and I have yet to post anything anywhere about it BEING Pride Month and me being queer and my books being queer, bc I've been burnt out af. so what energy I've had has gone toward planning and writing
anyway
I say "queerness in" rather than "queer characters in" because I want to talk about queerness in the book more broadly, not least bc I'm a queer creator & this is a queer book, but I've had a lot of impostor syndrome about both those things.
I figured out I was queer later in life & am a woman-presenting person w/a male-presenting partner. I've questioned my gender & sexuality repeatedly & ID'd differently over time, which is why I like "queer." I don't have to re-explain myself a dozen times. I'm queer. that's that.
but having figured out my queerness later, and having a relationship that presents as cishet, it took a long time for me to overcome feelings of ~not being queer enough~ (and sometimes I still struggle with them).
similarly, my MC is an apparently* cishet woman, unlike the MCs of many books that appear on queer book lists at this time of year. just like I took a long time to start really engaging with my community bc I worried I wasn't ~queer enough,~ for a long time, I didn't call this a queer book bc I worried it wasn't ~queer enough~. if people asked if the book was queer, I'd reply with a laundry list of explicitly queer characters rather than saying yes
fuck that though lmao. this is a queer book. let me count the ways
1. found family
as found family is so important to many queer people - by connecting us to our community, by welcoming us when bio family casts us off - found family is central to REMARKABLE RETIREMENT. while there are queer romantic arcs, the found family is the most important relationship in the book.
2. queer labels
some characters get explicit labels. Benjamin is gay. Clem is ace. queer labels are important bc they give us the ability to describe our identities and experiences! however...
3. undefined queerness
while labels are important, queerness isn't about fitting into new boxes. it's about smashing the boxes apart.
even if characters don't have specific labels applied on-page, they're queer. they don't need to claim a specific label for that to be true.*
*caveat that some media avoids using labels to pander to queer audiences w/implied queerness without ~alienating~ cishets by stating "this character is Not Cishet"**
that's not what I mean
I mean e.g. in OFMD queerness is inherent even if WORDS like queer/ace/etc aren't used. OMitB is another example (specifically Mabel) and Good Omens is yet another.
**caveat to my caveat that some media is queer-coded & avoids queer labels rather than being explicitly queer because network execs or whoever won't allow explicit queerness.
this is not the fault of the creators. sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference.
but anyway.
in REMARKABLE RETIREMENT, several queer characters are queer without using specific labels.
in some cases this is bc it doesn't come up or isn't important to them to express in the moment. like Clem is bi, but she's not worried about being bi. she's worried about being ace, because she's still kind of questioning that about herself, and she's worried it might cause problems down the road if her crush is >:[ about her not wanting to have sex. so she uses the word "ace" to describe herself in this scene but not "bi," even though she's both.
in other cases it's bc they don't have the language. Kiernan's sense of attraction and desire is described in a way that seems graysexual or demisexual (or both), and Red's sense of desire is described in a way that seems ace-spec, but neither of them use those terms, because neither of them know those terms. despite the lack of terminology, many ace readers have identified multiple ace characters based on description or experience. the lack of a specific label doesn't make those characters less queer.
similarly, some characters have not yet had this realization about themselves. which leads us to...
4. questioning
okay, back to my first asterisk of the post.
Edna is by all appearances an old cishet woman.
for most of the story, that's how she seems. that's what SHE thinks, even. she's a cishet old grandma adopting every queer young person she can find.
BUT THEN
Clem explains aceness to her
and Edna has a brief crisis bc wait a minute this sounds like her??
ultimately, Edna has too much to worry about right now to spend time questioning whether, at the age of 83, she might be somewhere on the ace spectrum
so it doesn't come up again
but that moment of crisis is THERE, & that too is queer
5. queernormativity*
I write queernorm worlds, largely bc I viscerally hate coming out lmao
it doesn't mean everyone's a queer scholar
like Clem has to explain "ace" to Edna, bc Edna thinks blankly of a deck of cards & doesn't understand what that has to do with sex
but it DOES mean queer folks get to just be and do
*caveat that this is not remotely to imply that a story is less queer if its world ISN'T queernorm
it's just a way in which MY story is queer
6. all the queer characters
not gonna do a list (even though my original idea for Pride Month when I was young and optimistic and thought I'd have energy to do it way back when was a list of queer characters), but virtually every character in this book is queer in one way or another
on twitter this is where I ended because 6 seemed like a good number for Pride since June is the sixth month, but tumblr gets a bonus
7. the author is queer
happy pride, buy my queer book

i had nada interest in chess but then i read your chess au and now its currently 4am and i’ve been up all night just watching chess videos on youtube. your power casper is frightening
there’s nothing like getting a little bit gay about a topic to make it one thousand times more interesting 😌🙏
i do think chess is inherently homoerotic though. all those pieces of hard wood 👀🥺👉👈 the damsel-in-distress is a king and he mewls and whines while his absolute bulldozer of a wife (sometimes they’re divorced 😳) spends the whole game ignoring him and fucking (up) other pieces.
the bishops doing that gay little sashay across the board, fianchettoing and forking pieces and getting forked in return 😌💖 this too 💖💖 is yuri 🙏💖💖😌 the knights who are just L’s you, L’s you, L’s you (gets taken by a pawn) and then of course the rooks. fortified motherfuckers who are definitely, 100% i asked god about this, the king’s secret boyfriend (in a transgender way somehow) (see “castling” for more information)
like really truly a more homoerotic game has not been conceived of 🙏 what do you mean you’re getting “taken” by a “knight” what do you mean you get your pawn across the board and he turns into a milf what do you mean you’re “opening” by pushing your pawn into an empty space? 👀😳😳😳😳😳😳 that sounds kind of gay 🧐

When it comes to "Fanon Stereotypes", which characters(aside from the Alphas because they're already criminally underexplored) do you think have it the worst? Alternatively; One misunderstanding or lie per character you see shown around as some weird truth?
As far as “Fanon Stereotypes,” as you’ve put it, goes… The first examples that come to mind that aren’t Alpha Trolls are Dave, Karkat, Kanaya, Dirk and Jake in tandem, and specifically how a lot of people portray June. John’s fine, people get weird with June specifically half the time, and I’m not talking about the discourse surrounding her…
For the “Misunderstanding Passed Off as Truth” part of your inquiry… Here’s a small and random assortment:
John has literally never used :B during the entire run of Homestuck. This is a Jane thing. That is a Jane emoticon.
Rose is not good at therapy. She’s never been good at therapy. She’s a 13 year old girl armchair diagnosing her brother as gay using Freudian psychoanalysis. If you take Freudian psychology seriously… I don’t know what to tell you.
Dave’s character arc is literally not about “overcoming toxic masculinity.” Yes, this is a trait he picks up from Bro, that is undeniable, but that’s genuinely not what the focus of his arc is. His arc circles around overcoming childhood neglect and abuse. It just so happens that being a little more forthcoming with his thoughts and feelings fell in line with that. Toxic masculinity, and the head-on tackling of it, was never the crux of his development.
Please for the love of god Jade is not stupid, and she doesn’t mean nothing to the plot. She’s just forgetful and also doesn’t want to be fucking miserable. She also doesn’t “get in the way of DaveKat,” because Dave and Jade legitimately had a thing going on way before Meteorstuck even happened.
Karkat’s arc isn’t about overcoming toxic masculinity either. What. His arc is about how he was born a Mutantblood and raised in a society that hates him. He’s the fucking Second Coming of Troll Christ. There’s so much pressure on him, and none of that pressure is focused in any way on his personal expression of/experience with his own masculinity.
Dave and Karkat do not have arcs that parallel each other at all. They aren’t narratively fated to be together, they aren’t masterfully foils, or star-crossed lovers or anything. The only ways they truly parallel each other in writing is due to the fact that they’re both Knights, and therefore are both interacting with what’s most important to them in generally the same or similar ways. That’s how Classes work. Revolutionary.
Kanaya isn’t stuffy, or boring, or overly-wordy. She isn’t a “mom friend” either. She’s just an extremely awkward girl who cares a lot about her friends and is very bad at social situations. She also isn’t fashionable or cool. I implore you to look back on her dialogue and on the outfits she wears. She is a mess.
Terezi is not a manic pixie dream girl. I’m in pain. This is still going on…
Jake’s character actually does extend past him being Dirk’s arm candy, actually! Jake isn’t just a “Sexy Lamp”! He’s very, very interesting, and he can exist outside of the concept of shipping- in fact, he canonically really, really wants to exist outside of the concept of being people’s object of romantic affections!
Tavros did not reciprocate Gamzee’s feelings. I’m not knocking on people who ship them, because I genuinely could not fucking care less, but I have seen people say that Tavros reciprocated those feelings, which… No, he didn’t.
Nothing to do with a character, but Moiraillegience is a romantic quadrant. It’s inherently romantic, just in a platonic way. It is not just “best friendship”- it’s more comparable to a Queerplatonic Relationship than anything. It is, in fact, weird to Paleship two siblings.

feeling very gay tonight. here’s a hildamana fic i wrote a few years ago :)
[no content warnings here, just some yearning and married life sweetness 🥰]
Mana woke to the sight of sunlight in her eyes. She grunted and shielded them, trying to get her bearings. She hadn’t realized she had fallen asleep, nor did she remember when she had. When she sat up, she noticed another figure in the room. At the foot of the yellow-covered bed, a pink-haired girl looked over her shoulder and giggled. “Well, hello, sleeping beauty,” Hilda cooed, a faint blush coloring her perfect cheeks. “You fell asleep on me, so I let you lay down for a while. You must have been tired. You were out cold!”
“I...I guess so,” Mana replied, still working on completely waking up. Now she remembered: she had been helping Hilda study for a certification exam. Fortress Knight, if she remembered correctly. Quite impressive indeed. But the Golden Deer’s books and notes had been cast aside, in favor of a couple pieces of ribbon she was braiding together. Mana smiled. Typical Hilda. “What time is it?” Mana wondered aloud.
“Almost sunset,” Hilda said, looking up from her braiding. “I hadn’t planned on you falling asleep, but it did give me a great idea.”
“What’s that?”
Hilda put the ribbons down and turned to face Mana on the bed, grinning broadly. “Sleepover!” she exclaimed, the window casting parallel lines of orange sunlight across her face.
Mana chuckled and quirked an eyebrow. “Are you asking me or telling me?”
“Both!”
As always, Hilda caught onto the teasing very quickly. It was worth a shot, and from the sound of it, she would get more opportunities later on. To be honest, a sleepover sounded like a lot of fun. Mana hadn’t had much quality “girl time” with anyone other than Dorothea (or Bernadetta, if your idea of “girl time” was talking to your girl friend through a wooden door). “Sure, that sounds fun,” Mana said, and Hilda practically squealed with delight. “Great! Oh, there’s so much we could do! I could do your makeup, or your hair, or we could make bracelets like I’m doing now!”
So much to do other than study, of course.
~~~
Mana was fascinating. She, much like Hilda herself, hid something of themselves from the rest of the monastery, but instead of trading inherent skill for apparent laziness, Mana traded inherent compassion for apparent frigidity. Why was that? Was it for the same reason Hilda hid? Did she also fear disappointment, or was it something else entirely?
Whenever Hilda would bemoan being put on the front lines in battle, Mana would become her unwavering shield. “You don’t have to worry about anything as long as I’m around!” she would say, and Hilda would pretend to swoon, “My hero!” But more questions swirled in her head: did she not mind Hilda’s unwillingness to participate, unlike basically everybody else who came into contact with her? Was this all an act to get on her good side? And to what end?
But despite these unanswerable questions, or perhaps because of them, they had become fast friends at the academy, chatting about this and that whenever they had the free time. Hilda saw a bit of herself in this Mana character. They would show their true selves around each other, without any fear. Hilda would show Mana something she excelled at, for there were things she was actually passionate about, and Mana would genuinely cheer her on.
Hilda had found herself quite enamored by this mysterious stranger.
But alas, they were in different houses, and wouldn’t get to have many classes together. Hilda found herself attending seminars she didn’t particularly care about, simply because she knew Mana would be there. Because even if Hilda wasn’t really that interested in learning magic, Mana was. And this meant they had an extra opportunity to spend time together.
Despite all this time they made for each other, Hilda had some lingering doubts about being in different houses. What if somebody in the Black Eagles had beaten her to the punch? What if Mana was already taken? Could such a thing really happen? After all, no one knew her like Hilda knew her...right?
~~~
Many years have passed. Hilda let out a big yawn, stretching her arms over her head. “Tired?” Mana asked her wife, looking up from the ribbons she was braiding. The woman across from her then laid her arms out dramatically on the table, resting her chin on top of them. “Mhm. Worked really hard today,” she sighed. In her defense, Hilda had gotten a lot done. Over fifty of the same bracelets Mana was working on were made in just a few hours, all packed up to bring to the shop in the morning. “My hands are cramping up...”
Indeed, those lovely hands of hers looked a little worse for wear. She could barely close them into fists. Mana frowned. “I’m sorry, hon,” she sympathized, gingerly taking one of those outstretched hands into her own. “I can finish up the rest of these if you want. There’s not that many left now.”
“If you’re sure,” Hilda, surprisingly, replied.
“Of course. I thought you would jump at the chance.”
“I mean yeah, it’s a nice gesture. But I don’t want to work you to the bone, you know?”
Mana was truly shocked. She looked closely at Hilda, whose dreamy pink eyes shone brilliantly—and innocently—in the candlelight. She didn’t appear to be signaling any sort of ulterior motive... “You’re sure?”
“Yes! We can do the rest in the morning if you wanna stop for the day.”
Wow. She was serious. Mana’s smile was so wide it made Hilda burst into laughter. “What are you so surprised about? A girl’s gotta look out for her wife, right?”
Mana giggled behind her hand. “Nothing, nothing, it’s just...sweet. You’ve changed.”
“I’m still lazy, don’t get me wrong,” Hilda said, getting up and circling the table to Mana’s side. She leaned down and kissed the mercenary’s cheek. “But I’ll always make an exception for you, babe.” Mana’s flustered face made Hilda laugh again. “I always kiss you on the cheek! Why are you blushing now?”

Ok wait I’m not done actually. This post has given me brain rot so bad I’ve been staring at it for like days weeks hours years, so bare with me.
Just thinking: Lily Evan’s is the second daughter of the king and queen, and as the second daughter it’s her duty to marry outside of the kingdom to build strong allies. The obvious choice of course is James potter, the neighboring kingdoms sole heir and most powerful ally. Lily and James are both quiet close actually and all things considered, there are worse options (i.e. the third son mulciber in another kingdom) so to solidify the alliance the Evan’s send Lily across the oceans with their trusted guards. One being Dorcas, who is pulling a mulan and has been pretending to be a man for the past 3 years in order to join the knights and fight. Dorcas tries to keep an appropriate distance from Lily as a knight, but Lily is in a sort of melancholy muse where she kind of looks out over the water and without looking at Dorcas goes “have you ever felt like you’re not really a person, but just a puppet who lets everyone pull the strings? I feel like I have no control, but I don’t think I’ve ever tried to take it either.” And Dorcas kind of just lets that sit with them. Then one night their ship wrecks (ofc like all good stories) and the two of them are the only survivors/only ones on the same part of the land. Just thinking about them having to navigate the land and grow closer and Lily feeling conflicted because while she’s never had any loyalty to marrying James and knows neither of them care about the alliance aside from placating their parents, she does feel conflicted because she was under the impression she only liked woman? And this is a man? So she’s going through a crisis coming to terms with being bisexual when finally after some big thing, she finds out Dorcas is a woman, and she’s angry and Dorcas thinks it’s bc she was lying and committing a crime technically punishable by death, but Lily is mad because she made her think she was attracted to men😭 any ways yeah so just them falling in love and Dorcas protecting Lily and !!!!
Also James pov where it’s him losing his goddamn mind because Lily is like his best friend and he loves her so so much and when the news of the wreck reached him he was like “yeah no she’s still alive nothing could kill Lily Evans, we need to go find her” and everyone keeps telling him there were no survivors but he’s like I don’t give a fuck, she’s alive. So then with the help of Lady Walburga’s son and his best friend Sirius, he’s able to sneak out one night pretending to be a commoner, but he runs into regulus and somehow they’re forced to travel together (reg probably said smth like “if you don’t take me with you I’ll to straight to your very worried parents and tell them you’re putting yourself in danger without any guards to go look for Lily alone” and James is like FUCK fine you can come, just don’t say I didn’t try). So the two of them traveling together, reg trying to get away from his family, James searching for Lily, and falling in love at the same time as Lily and Dorcas <3 gays all around
And just for some wolfstar bc I can’t function without them: Sirius being left to kind of mediate the potters and be like “it’s ok I’m sure James is fine, he’s smart it’s ok we’ll find him” while hiding the fact that he snuck James out, and he meets a stable boy (OFC BC I LOVE THIS TROPE YOY CAN RIP IT FROM MY DEAD HANDS) and he’s like instantly GONE. Remus being a stable boy and meeting the charming, beautiful Lords son and being like “yeah fuxk you and the monarchy, you’re probably an asshole who wipes his ass with gold leaf” and Sirius is like *heart eyes, aWOOga* “my family and the inherent inequality of the monarchy again😍” and they fall in love <3

THANK YOU for saying that about merlin! like the way ppl talk about it and all that is like BE REAL ?! And the high horse and preaching was just bewildering. And I've been a Arthur, merlin and his knights m/m shipper since I was old enough to read lol there is so much material out there that's WAY more "gay" about arthur and co than the show merlin ever was
Did you ever see the king Arthur movie with Mads and Hugh? I was shipping them together as galahad and Tristan (with gawain too lol) before they started working in Hannibal lmao they were manifested by me and all the other clowns 🤡
like there is something inherently homoerotic about the manservant thinggg but secret practice of magic is (when written by old white men) The euphemism for Christianity

Can you elaborate on the "Disney Princess" Jack? Cuz I honestly feel he is one but I can't articulate in words how or why he is one, but I firmly believe the title fits him xD
ahhhhh anon i ABSOLUTELY WILL elaborate on my Jack is a disney princess agenda, i adore you so much for asking as it gives me the perfect excuse to wax lyrical about this whole topic for a bit. because admittedly disney princess Jack is a sort of crack type thing, if we're being technical he's nothing like a disney princess — however i feel like there is a genuine argument to be made that he is disney princess coded, at least within his own narrative. you are right, he gives off those vibes. ( and we're not the only ones who think this — tumblr will not let me hyperlink the video but https://www.tiktok.com/@some.emmagination.huh/video/6961180862117367045 — the fact that Jack is so often seen with or around the princesses in the disney parks says a lot i think lmao ).
it's possibly because he's assuredly not your classic white knight disney prince, he's not "bad" enough in own his narrative to be villain-coded, and his effeminate characteristics ( the famous story about disney execs thinking that JD was playing Jack as gay in the first film and absolutely freaking out about it ) play into that whole idea. I also think it's always fun to take a character like Jack, who belongs in a hyper masculine environment but consistently challenges those stereotypes, and consider him occasionally in terms of the feminine. Jack being a trickster archetype also helps with this; gender expression is inherently very fluid to him. plus potc plays with this too — Elizabeth is made the Pirate King, after all.
but he does also fit some classic disney princess tropes! defining a disney princess is kinda tricky now because over the past twenty years or so that definition has (quite rightly) diversified from the more traditional princesses of older disney movies, but i wanna highlight some of the fun ways in which Jack fits into that vague category.
he talks to animals! maybe not uhhhh... in the nice way that princesses generally do lmao, but he has his god-tier rivalry with Jack the monkey, openly admits that he'll have Cotton's parrot on board the Black Pearl in AWE because "at least I'll have someone to talk to," and in TPOF starts telling his new horse Caesar sea stories because he gets bored waiting for Ayisha. as a child, I am sure he also had very animated conversations with Tim the dog, too. he also sings, canonically. Elizabeth teaches him the song from the ride in CotBP and Jack continues to sing or hum that on two more occasions in the trilogy. he descends from almost literal pirate royalty, effectively already making him a princess. Jack might be the black sheep of the family but he comes from a familial line of very rich, very influential pirates within the Brethren Court. and calling him a prince just feels wrong, so princess it is. also if he gets together with Elizabeth post-AWE he "marries" into royalty and becomes the queen of the Brethren Court, true facts.
another is that he has the most fairytale esque, romantic dynamic in the entire franchise with the Black Pearl. I've said it again and again, but if Jack's ship were a human and Jack still talked about her the way he does, he'd be the most romantic bastard in the fucking movies lmao. in TPOF, it was literally love at first sight, Jack stared at her on the dock when he first saw her ( and she didn't look her best, she was a ship that had been neglected for a while and Jack spent weeks sprucing her up and getting her shipshape ) and completely fell head over heels. he gets an entire paragraph in that novel about what it is to finally know what love is after hearing sailors talk about it for so long. he dies for her, gives up his immortal soul for her.... Jack is motivated by love in the trilogy ( no matter how difficult, or twisted, or toxic that love becomes ), I won't accept any arguments.
Jack is surrounded by loveable sidekick type characters. potc is a great franchise for this anyway just in general, but Jack's crew fit a lot of those archetypes that you find in many disney princess movies. from the mice in Cinderella, to Scuttle/Sebastian/Flounder in the Little Mermaid, to the furniture/servants in Beauty and the Beast, there's a lot of overlap — and while you can also say that Jack, being a side character, also fits that role, as he becomes subject to main character syndrome in the franchise, he gradually becomes more and more at the centre of it instead of being with them on the sidelines. disney princesses, particularly from the older movies, are also frequently in need of rescue, and rescuing Jack from the Locker is the major plot point of the first hour of AWE. he might mockingly call Elizabeth the damsel to Will, but he is in fact the damsel put in distress in that movie.
then there are the somewhat more angsty ones. disney is renowned for its absent mothers, particularly within its fairytales, and Jack is no different. I may have my well-developed headcanons about Jack's mother but in terms of the strict canon, we know nothing about her ( beside the shrunken head ) and that is on purpose, considering that the house of mouse would not let anyone, including the author of TPOF, write about Jack's mother or even hint as to her existence. Jack is also subject to the controlling influence of his single parental figure, Teague, in his early life, which is a classic plight disney princesses find themselves in, whether the dynamic is outright abusive like Jack and Teague's is, or less so. Jack — at least earlier in his life, less so in the trilogy itself — is easily manipulated by the "villains." the plot of TPOF hinges on Jack being manipulated and betrayed by Christophe, and then the plot of CotBP hinges on Jack being betrayed by Barbossa during the mutiny on the Black Pearl ten years prior.
lastly and, a bit of an odd one maybe, but something I want to include, is that Jack is often coveted by others. it's most obvious in Jack's dynamic with Beckett which, whether you read into it sexually or not on Beckett's side, I personally think it's entirely up for interpretation, is very driven by Beckett's desire to possess Jack. he wants to control him and use him in the same way that he uses all material things, and is pushed to very extreme lengths when Jack resists that control and tries to assert his autonomy. I think Jack being such a free spirit, as well as the fact that he's a pretty boy and is unapologetically sexual ( the second not being a disney princess trait lmao ) he invites that kind of attitude from other people. he invites people to try to challenge that aspect of his character and put him in a box, or control him, or break him.

WE CERTAINLY CAN!!!!

alan scott - autistic. to me, this is more perceiving reality than outright a hc but it's something i'll stand by always and forever. alan's hobbies are repairing/collecting old radios and putting together model train sets. i think he's also big on country/folk music, from his railroad days. okay, that's several hcs (the ufonaut special).
jay garrick - jay's got some sort of vague anxiety disorder as per the implications of the jsa: ragnarok novel. nothing to do with his speed, he's just a born over-thinker.
al pratt - not enough heroes in humanities so it's my genuine belief al eventually gets a degree in lit/journalism from calvin college and ends up working at a newspaper.
kent nelson - i'll always believe kent choosing jared stevens as his successor was his one attempt to stand up to nabu and break the cycle of abuse inherent to the fate legacy, and for a little bit there he nearly did it. my other kent hcs have been [redacted].
carter hall - permanent chairman of the jsa because nobody else wants to be. considered clinically insane by many, loved by few.
rex tyler - his addiction issues are pretty much as explicit as it gets but i'll still say i think rex's addiction extends far beyond miraclo and the adrenaline of it, and the fact that he's ended up with some awful chronic pain from his years as hourman contributes to some less than advisable ways he self medicates every now and again. non-negotiable, there's no way miraclo not preventing injuries but merely allowing him not to feel them as they happen hasn't had deep repercussions.
jim corrigan - in a committed & exclusive gay homosexual relationship with the spectre, which is not his own soul nor an entirely separate entity but a secret third thing. most closeted man imaginable. still speaks like a noir detective, all dames and broads and such. ignoring ostrander's '92 take of having him be from the south, jim lives & breathes new york (or... he did. anyway. when he lived and breathed).
wesley dodds - dian & sandy both deserved better. that's all i've got. i'm sorry to say i'm the no 1 wes dodds hater (see: 'the creature in the velvet cage', justice league of america 1960 #113).
johnny thunder - most autistic teenager on planet earth :)
as we all know ted knight & charles mcnider (asc #8), wonder woman (asc #12), terry sloane & ted grant (asc #24), and dinah drake (asc #41) are all later-but-still-golden-age additions so i won't be including them as original jsaers. however, i still hope you enjoyed this! thank you so much!!

lime give me ur fucking kirby and dedede and/or kirby and meta knight opinions right fucking now [insert gun emote]
You’re getting King Dedede and Meta Knight as well bc I need to explain all three of their relationships to each other to properly explain any of my feelings on any of them
Kirby and King Dedede:
Tumblr media
They are both found family and worst enemies and I can’t stress how much I love that. King Dedede wants to clobber dat dere Kirbeh but also he’s Kirby’s dad he’s adopted this little pink friend and he doesn’t know how. Kirby calls him dad once and he has an entire existential crisis about it and can’t leave his room for a week. They’re worst enemies but also they love each other like family. Also the inherent meaning of tiny queer puffball and big gay penguin becoming odd friends.
Kirby and Meta Knight:
Tumblr media
Mentally I am that picture of the cat crying in the doorway about them. Meta Knight is Kirby’s enemy/mentor/dark mirror/father figure who doesn’t know if he wants Kirby to take after him or get as far away from being like him as possible. He wants to nurture him but he’s so far from being a nurturing person that he doesn’t know how to do that, and Kirby understands the heart inside of him he tries to hide more than anyone else could. In a sense, they’re the only ones who could ever begin to understand what the other has been through and is going through, but in another sense, they don’t understand each other at all. Also again, inherent importance and complexity of tiny pink orb of lgbtq and older gay trans man being friends.
King Dedede and Meta Knight
Tumblr media
Look there’s no way around this, these bastards are divorced. They’re so divorced. Multi divorced. I’ve never seen a pair of characters so divorced in my life. They care for each other deeply but also loathe each other deeply and that’s just something so important to both of them. They’re Kirby’s divorced dads and neither has any clue who adopted him first.

could you do knight of heart please??
Alright we're doing this. (Disclaimer: Pretty much everything here is speculation. I’m mostly doing this because I find Classpects really really interesting, so this might not be super accurate. Also, I will be looking at cookie cutter examples for personality. Those parts are mostly for 1.) Making characters and 2.) Being like “Oh my god that’s me wow that’s so cool”. Okay anyway lets actually do this thing. WHERE MAKING THIS HAPEN)
Tumblr media
KNIGHT
The Knight class is very powerful, especially considering they get a lot of their powers before god-tiering. (im jealous - the page) The Knight is the active version of the Page class, and they would manipulate their aspect, or manipulate through their aspect. Looking at the canon Knights (excluding Latula because I find her hard to analyze), we have Dave Strider, the Knight of Time (Endings, Death) , and Karkat Vantas, the Knight of Blood (Companionship, Bonds) (OMG GAY PEOPLE!??/?!!??!?!?)
Anyway, Dave Strider. Dave had an inherent talent for his aspect, and got the hang of time travel and time loops pretty quickly. (He also self-prototyped, which might be a time player thing considering they already surround themselves with clones anyway.) He also very actively exploited Time to get rich. However, he rejected parts of his aspect, specifically the death and endings part, and tried to cover up his lack of comfortability with his own mortality with a constant "cool guy" routine. Knights also are very likely to show up in sessions lacking their Aspect, and Dave was in a session that had only about a day before the reckoning.
Karkat Vantas is the Knight of Blood, and while Blood is less flashy than Time, he still exploited the hell out of his aspect. He basically used Blood to have everyone rally around him, in a positive way or not. He had everyone basically unite in sort of hating him, and that held the session together. Trolls are a very violent race on Alternia, and so there was a lack of Blood, but Karkat pulled everyone together. He rejected how much he loved his friends by putting on a "I HATE EVERYONE" façade.
HEART
Heart is the Aspect of the soul, relationships, personality, and most Heart players have splinters of their personality, in some way. Dirk is the best example, seen in his multiple iterations, such as Brain Ghost Dirk and Lil' Hal, and he generally feels sort of a connection to his alternate-timeline-selves. As the Prince of Heart, he destroyed his relationships. And he almost destroyed Aranea's soul that one time.
Now, Nepeta does show the relationship aspect of the Heart Aspect very clearly. She had the whole shipping wall and such. However, I personally think that the roleplaying is part of the Heart Aspect's splinters. She broke her personality into splinters, and then imbued this splinters into her roleplay characters.
KNIGHT OF HEART - PERSONALITY
Now, Knights are incredibly adept at their Aspect, but will hide away bits of it they don't like. Now, what I think is interesting about this is that Knights will hide parts of their personality, and Heart is all about personality. So they would hide their personality two-fold. They could also be very secretive about their emotions, and likely would just be pretty closed off in general.
As the Knight learned to be more comfortable in their Aspect, they would not only grow more powerful, but also fully embrace all the things about Heart. They would be less closed off about their emotions, and would probably also be pretty good at helping out their friends with their emotional problems. (Most Heart players are pretty good at that)
KNIGHT OF HEART - ABILITIES
So, Knights in general are pretty powerful, even without god-tiering. I can see the Knight's manipulation of Heart manifesting in some pretty cool ways. For example, maybe they could imbue a splinter into a weapon and make it more powerful.
Speaking of splinters, the Knight of Heart would be really good at utilizing them, although it's very possible that their splinters could be the very part that they hide away. I could imagine that at higher levels, they might actually be able to physically manifest a splinter, and have it fight alongside them. This might require a Fraymotif with, say, a Space player.
As for the emotions part, I can see the Knight being able to sway people with their words. They could guilt trip somebody so hard they would start crying. But Knight's tend to not actually use their powers for being a huge jerk. More likely, they would sway large portions of the Dersian armies.
CONCLUSION
Sorry for the break, I got burnt out. Anyway I've got a lot of asks piled up, so I might take a while to go through all of them. But I hope to try to get one of these out at least every other day (no promises). So yeah, send an ask if you want to, but beware it might take a bit for me to actually answer. Anyway, thanks.

[personal kvetching below from a person frustrated that they’re a flawed human being and not immune to systemic societal bigotry - do not patronize me or act like this is some pity-me cry baby schtick I’m just talking myself through my own bullshit like I’m a fucking toddler]
This is a personal vent post that I’d normally keep to my main but it’s too entrenched in the whump community and how we specifically treat characters of color and white characters to post there so. Here it is.
Recently (within the last year?) I had it pointed out to me that a) a lot of whumpee’s are ‘innocent white boys’ and b) a lot of caretakers are patient and protective POC. There’s a lot of meta I’ve read around this and it’s important as a community to address and grow from these racist and (and often times sexist) stereotypes.
But jfc it makes me so frustrated with myself for not noticing it in my own writing before like. idk I guess I thought I was better than that?* It’s part of the reason why TBK hasn’t really been updated in so long - the plan was to introduce a caretaker of color for the sad broken white whumpee. And I had it justified to myself in ‘oh well he’s the white Black Knight and Bors is the Black White Knight’ but realizing that this is a symptom of a greater pattern in my writing and whump writing at large throws that bullshit in the bin.
Like. I want to fix it but I don’t know how/the only way I could think to fix it feels tokenizing - rewriting BK to also be a POC character OR erasing Bors and Percy’s race and how it impacts their characterization both feel like putting a bandaid on a bullet hole.
And I know that stereotypes aren’t inherently a bad thing and they can be handled with respect and such in writing - but the greater patterns around those stereotypes are still enforced by writing them. You can kill off your queer character in a way that serves the narrative and their thematic role in it but you’re still burying your gay and need to remember that your work does not exist in a vacuum.
And I know that I need to get over myself and I will and I’ll keep trying to unlearn the systemic bigotry we’ve been marinated in our whole lives but like. Fucking hell man I know there isn’t a quick fix for two decades on this bitch of an Americanized earth but I wish there was. Being progressive and anti-racist and a dozen other labels doesn’t mean shit when your behaviors are still informed by the very systems you profess the desire to dismantle.
All I can do is move forward and try to be better in my future writing and try to fix what I can in my current writing but that doesn’t stop me from being annoyed with my past self for things they didn’t even realize were a pattern until it was pointed out to them.
Anyways if you’re still reading and I’ve pissed you off be normal about it and like. Put gore or a good ole KYS in my inbox. If you can feel free to find me irl and we can have a fistfight behind the Walgreens (don’t worry you can beat me I’ve got a bum leg and poor eyesight). Or you can be extra quirky and pop into my DMs so we can hash this out and discuss how I can be a better person like adults.
