“What are you writing, Schatje?” Max asks, sliding onto the piano bench beside you.

“I wrote a song based on my vows,” you tell him, writing down the last couple chords, humming a rhythm to yourself.

Max, ever since I met you, I knew you were special. You’re my fire and my safety, you never try to break me, and you promise to always stay. I promise those same things to you. I don’t want to live without you, I never want to learn how to fall asleep without you, I want to be in love with you forever. You are my forever.

“Play it for me?” he asks when you finish, pressing a kiss to your shoulder. You nod, gently pressing the keys, mentally noting the kinks to fix before recording tomorrow. “It’s beautiful, the fans are going to love it, I love it,” Max compliments and you grin at him.

“I’m excited to announce the album and tour, and I’m glad we follow F1 around Europe. I get to spend more of summer with you that way,” you lean on his shoulder. You dedicated the album to him, and your third record is set to be the best selling one yet.

You took the unconventional route and took his last name after marrying him this year, despite having two hit albums and international fame. You still publish under your maiden name, but the name change caused a lot of shock.

You became an international superstar with your first release and it’s only grown since. Despite your relationship with Max spanning most of your music career, the both of you are able to spend a relatively low profile life in Monaco. Everything you record in the studio down the street is sent to your Hollywood label and released from there.

The next few months see you doing press for the surprise drop that was your bestselling third album and hyping the tour. Tour rehearsals fell during training time for Max and the both of you were going nonstop.

“I have to go to bed, Schatje, love you,” Max yawns over Facetime, you wish him goodnight as you stretch for your last show in North America. Tomorrow you jet to Europe to pick up that leg of the tour.

By the time you reach London, your tour has officially lined up with F1, which means your personal box near the stage is full of drivers, who likely are being bombarded with autograph requests. You slip into your black, sparkly bodysuit and matching hells; hair, makeup, and nails perfectly done; and grab your matching microphone before heading to your mark under the stage. The roar of the crowd energized you as the intro video plays.

“Come on London, let’s have some fun,” you say into the mic before smoke fills the stage above you and the trap door opens, the platform beneath you rising you up. You launch into your opening act. Half an hour later, after prancing and dancing and singing around the stage you take a pause to introduce the next act. The crowd cheers loudly before you have a chance to speak. You look around, smiling at everyone even if you can’t see them.

“London, thank you, my name is Y/n Verstappen, that’s my show for tonight,” you tease, the crowd silences. “Nah, I’m kidding. I wouldn’t leave you hanging like that, not when you are one of the best crowds I’ve had on tour,” you tell them, giving them a second to cheer.

“Since you have been such a great host, I wanted to share something special about this next song, something not many people know, but not quite yet. Quick shoutout to the F1 drivers here tonight, including my handsome husband, y’all are cool. But not as cool as everyone else here,” you purposely leave them hanging a little, blowing a kiss in the direction of Max.

“Alright, so, this next song is not only the title of my new album, but I also took parts of my vows and wrote them into the song. I hope you like it,” you say and the crowd cheers as the first chords play behind you.

“Thank you, London! Goodnight!” After the concert, you rush backstage and into Max’s open arms.

“You were incredible, Liefje” Max kisses you. Charles jokingly gags behind you.

“Thank you, Maxie,” you whisper, hugging him tight. Your assistant hands you a towel to put around your neck and a bottle of water which you happily take.

“You had a great show,” the other drivers tell you, all complimenting the show and thanking you for the tickets. You thank them for attending and excuse yourself so you could change. Max reminds them of the post-show dinner and club plans and carries you to your dressing room. You collapse on the couch, as Max chuckles at your dramatics.

“I swear the best part of a show is laying down after,” you groan and Max gently takes off your heels causing you to moan in relief.

“Y/n! People are going to think we are doing things in here,” Max laughs, you wave him off, changing into comfy but club appropriate clothes. Max helps you take off your stage makeup, and redoes your hair as you put a little bit of normal makeup on.

“Ready, Maxie?” you ask, grabbing your purse. It is nice knowing that assistants will take everything back to the hotel for you.

“I promise I will always come back home to you, I know my driving style is agressive, but I won’t make you learn how to fall asleep without me,” Max says, his hands holding your face gently.

“I know, but I will always be scared when you are on the track. You can’t promise nothing will happen, but I know you will always try,” you tell him, pressing a soft kiss to his lips. You stay in his embrace for a minute until rejoining half of the paddock. I can be in love forever, if I die first…

ever since you were a kid, you had always look up to kpop idols, from girls generation, super juniors, 2NE1, you name it. you always want to stand under the lime light, you crave the feeling of being loved by many, you love to perform and you show your talent for it even at a young age.

you can sing well, dance well, you can even play a few instruments. it was like a sure thing for you to get into the industry. and you did. you debuted under SM entertainment as a soloist. at first, you were chose to be in a girl group, but then an incident happened, and your manager said that they decided to let you go solo.

being an artist under SM has it perks, like how you know your girlfriend through the company. bada lee is a well known choreographer, especially for SM artists. she had choreographed for so many artists under SM, to work with her was like a blessing to you at that time. she was chose to choreographed for your debut single, and she was also the one to teach you all the moves.

it would be an understatement to say you're attracted to her at that time. you were head over heels for bada. she is everything you dream of, the talent, the hard work, the way bada is always so caring towards others. bada is the definition of perfect for you. and like everyone else, you swoons over her in a heartbeat.

you just love how her fringes stick to her forehead when she dance, you love how she hug you so tightly when you did something good or to encourage you. and you so so love the way she smells.

so when you confessed to bada about your feelings. not expecting for her to even care about it. and she said yes.

oh it was like a dream come true.

of course you two have to keep it a secret. you being an idol and her being your choreographer (and also your teacher) is not a very great combo for people to find out.

but it's always fun to leave subtle hints.

like how you would post on instagram about your vacay in jeju island, and then a few days later bada would post about her being at the island too, wearing a scarf that you crocheted for her.

or like how you would be on live and she would just casually request to join in with you. and of course you accept it.

but as much as bada and you leave hints, your fans would always just brush it off, thinking that you guys are just very close friends.

you sometimes laugh about it with bada, your body would be engulf in her arms as you sit on her lap and you scroll on your phone to look at what people said about you guys.

but that day, the day after your comeback, when you guys are hanging out at bada's place and you were scrolling on your phone while bada hold you and search up a movie for the both of you to watch.

curiously, you straighten up your back, knowing damn well the post is talking about you, because there was no other SM artist who had a comeback this month other than you.

your sudden tense figure doesn't go unnoticed by bada as she hug you from behind and pull you in so you can relax again. her head peak through from behind your shoulder to see what you're looking at.

"gosh these people", you mumble, your hand still scroll through the comments. and bada kiss your hair softly so you can keep your composure.

yea, definitely, i was really hoping to see her shine in this comeback, but honestly what is that? lolol

it's so hard to like the song, there's nothing good about it. and her voice? just...no

and that is the last straw for you to turn off your phone and slump back to bada's embrace.

"why are they so mean?", you ask, your voice is obviously irritate, but this is an honest question. you don't get why people have to shame you over it, you don't get a say to what your company give you. and you definitely tried your best.

bada rest her head on your shoulder from behind, she give you a kiss on the crook of your neck as she said slowly "sometimes people just have different opinions" and you know that, you know fully well about that. being an idol means you have to accept criticism, and there would be many people who would just not like it even when you tried your hardest.

you turn around to face bada, you pout and get all work up like you're about to break a leg.

"but they don't have to be so mean! i did try my best!" you said, your hands cupping bada's face as she chuckle. you furrow your brows, clearly not loving the situation at hand.

of course she knows you tried your best, being your girlfriend and the one to help you out with your dancing skill. bada is the one who would know, because even when everyone turn their backs to you, bada will still protect you no matter what. she knows how hard you work, how passionate you are about what you do.

"i know princess" she said softly as she takes your hand in hers and give it a light kiss. but that wasn't enough for you to stop thinking about all the comments from the post. all the things they said creeping up your nerves.

"they said i'm just a pretty face and don't have any talents" you scoff. and bada once again pat your head to give you comfort. she knows you just want her to comfort you right now rather than to give you any more criticism.

"it's not like everyday they could have the priveledge to look at your pretty face like me" bada said, her face getting closer to yours and she give you a kiss on your left cheek. it was sweet, how she comfort you, always so soft and gentle, always make sure to get all touchy with you so you would feel like you're loved.

"you don't get it! they said i'm just a pretty girl, and i can't sing at all? what about all the hard work i put into this comeback? and all the voice training i have to do?" you pout, crossing your arms as bada hug you tightly. it's really irritating for you, you don't just work your ass off everyday for people to give all the credits to your face. as if you didn't try to be better every comeback.

"alright alright, you shouldn't be stressing about it, everyone have different opinions, i think that your comeback song is great!" she cheer you up (or at least an attempt to cheer you up), and you sigh, decide not to pester into it anymore, after all it would not do you any good if you think about it too much.

you still got a whole week of promotion for the song, all the shows you have to attend in an attempt for your song to be well known. and so you decide to just relax into bada's arm, letting her comfort engulf you as you guys watch a movie to keep your mind occupy.

after the incident, you basically doubt that your song would have the love of everyone. so it was very suprising for you to see how everyone listen to the song and repost it. of course, the first person you rush to share the new is none other than your girlfriend. you jump at the sight of bada. basically cling to her as you wrap your arms around her neck.

"baby baby, do you see this? it went viral!" you exclaim excitingly as you give a whole lot of kisses to bada's face. not really caring that you guys are at SM and not at your houses. but to your defense, it was an empty hallway and you were excited, so who even have the heart to just cut off your fun when your eyes shine so brightly.

"yea yea i see" bada laugh as she put you down. shuffling your hair as you shriek in happiness. your eyes again radiating how happy you are, and the sight of that make bada so relieved as you had been in a bad mood for the whole promotion week.

"i really wonder why it got viral though, they were hating on it just a few days ago", you state, not that you hate it, you just wonder why. seeing you deep in thought make bada chuckle a bit, she likes you when you're furrowing your brows trying to figure out something.

she finds it endearing when you do it, thinking you're too cute when you try to think hard on something. and then she would just comfortably slide in a comment that may or may not give you an answer to your question.

"maybe someone used your song and it got viral", bada said, chuckling and shuffling your hair. she likes your hair, it's soft and always smell so good. she lean down to kiss on top of your head and then exclaim "i got to go, have to start on a new dance project, i'll see you soon", and she winks at you after saying that.

you nod and wave at her, bada's words still screw into your mind.

↳ Anon this is adorable! I'm tempted to write a fic about something along these lines at a different time, but for now have some hcs :]

➸ Pinocchio finds out you sing on one of his return trips to the hotel. His attention is first grabbed by the sound of the piano, its' notes greeting him upon his entrance, and being the artistically inclined man that P is, he naturally follows it. His attention is secondly grabbed by the faint sound of a voice, half hidden by the keys and only to be properly made out that's yours when he's standing in the doorway of the library. He makes eye contact with Antonia, who sends him a smile before turning back to you, who either hasn't noticed that he's there or simply doesn't care. He supposes it to be the former, too engrossed in what you're doing to pay attention to the outside world.

➸ He, very quickly, ends up the same. Dead glass eyes watch intently as your hands glide over the keys, something akin to life sparking in them as he listens to your voice dance with the music. Pinocchios' initial reaction is that you sound beautiful, look beautiful. Though it would be more accurate, I suppose, to say that he thinks you both look and sound incredibly human. P has never heard anyone sing outside of Vinyls, at least not for long, so being able to not only listen in person but watch as you engage in the act of something as human as music has his gears speeding up. Something in them has changed, he's sure of it.

➸ It should come as no surprise to say that Pinocchio is immensely curious about [and attracted to, in your case] things he perceives as human. This is partially due to the fact that he sees them as a goal, something to work towards and obtain, a barrier to be broken between himself and humanity as a whole. And of course this extends to music and is one of the reasons his vinyl collection is ever growing, why he always finds himself returning to the piano. It is a little hard to tell whether Ps' appreciation of art is something inherent to him or if it merely exists because he thinks it has to. In all honesty it's probably both.

➸ Now, to grow less introspective about it all, Pinocchio also just really loves listening to you sing because it's, well, you. He is undoubtably your number one fan, though he's subtle about it. Gemini is the hype man, much to the embarrassment of P and the amusement of Everyone Else. Honestly it's not even really embarrassment on Ps' part, more of an annoyed "wow I wish you would shut the fuck up!" because Gemini has the talent of being able to bring you into every conversation and you being a singer just adds more fuel to a fire that really does not need it [Pinocchio would one hundred percent do the same though if he was more, you know, talkative].

➸ One of Pinocchios' main love languages is quality time, and honestly you being a singer is perfect for that. Most of his time at the hotel is spent just sitting and listening and watching. Something about your voice makes him feel safe, as weird as that may sound. Maybe it's the affection in it when you sing for him alone, or just how intimate the atmosphere ends up being. He's not even sure if he's capable of feeling comfort, but he wouldn't change whatever's in his chest for the world.

➸ In regards to duets, I think Pinocchio would actually be rather open to the idea. Now, contrary to popular belief he can in fact speak, though he seldom ever does it without prompting. He doesn't really see the point in it if we're being honest, yes speaking is human but his voice is so flat and honestly he just doesn't have a lot to say about things. So it's fairly safe to say P has never sung before, hell he's not even sure if his voicebox can function like that, but nonetheless when you bring up the idea of a duet he's not only willing but somewhat eager about the whole thing. There's really no rhyme or reason for it either, Pinocchio just likes the idea of doing something human with someone who makes it easy to forget he's a puppet.

➸ Now Pinocchios' singing voice is actually rather nice! Though it is, of course, undeniably mechanical. There's something off about it, at times sounding like a crude mimicry of a human, a constant stiffness and roughness to it. It falls into a sort of uncanny valley, however there is also something undeniably endearing about it, something human about how much you can tell he wants to express anything in it. As for sound outside of puppetry, Ps' voice is fairly deep but retains a certain gentleness to it, a smoothness that contradicts the stiffness in a really lovely way. And yes, Pinocchio has a sense of rhythm.

➸ Pinocchio has a strong preference for keeping your duets private. The best way to do that, in his opinion, is when you're both out in the gardens dancing together. Under the stars while everyone else is inside, chest against chest and voices in sync, the gentle twirls and turns as you both slip into your own little world. If you couldn't tell how much he values your duets before, you certainly can now. Kiss him after the song is done, won't you?

Once law is sufficiently intoxicated this is one of his most favorite crew activities. His voice is somewhere in the emo/pop punk area and he sounds really good. He’s a showman and will sing directly to people in the crew, pick songs specifically for certain people. It’s when he’s the most carefree so the crew try to get him like this a few times a year (they can’t push it or else he’ll realize what they’re doing)

Bepo loves doing duets. He isn’t the best singer but isn’t the worst, and everyone loves when it’s their turn to sing with him. He’s big into throwing his arm around his partner and dancing with them and he just gets Very Into It. Bring on the Uta.

Shachi is the Party Master, Master of the Party. He absolutely cannot sing but honestly the vibes are so good sometimes people are tricked into thinking he sounds kinda okay. Shachi is the one to rally the troops when it’s time for a party — he gets people hyped up and is the one to start pouring drinks. In the event the crew is singing like a sea shanty or w/e all together shach will be the person stomping out the beat and getting people to join in.

Penguin’s favorite activity is being surrounded by his nakama so karaoke night is always a fav for him. Because he’s so comfortable he’ll knock back a few more drinks than usual and some might even call him chatty. He doesn’t sing, but he’s everyone’s biggest hype man and it’s so genuine. Like even the objectively worst singers on the crew really think he means it when he tells them they sounded great.

I’m still sussing out the rest of the crew but some random vibes are Ikakku is a pop music queen and absolutely owns that mic (she’s everyone’s fav performer), uni is anyway here’s wonderwall, and hyakugan sings like 10 octaves lower than he talks

When I tell you this man was flustered when you pointed him out in the crowd. Not only was your song full of love and energy, but all of your attention was on him, laser-focused on his face in the roaring crowd as you danced and sang across the stage like a professional. He’s the type to try and show his affection through actions instead of words, so expect a lot of flowers, gifts, and lots of hand-holding!

What made it even worse was he knew this was being broadcasted. Though he felt horrified by the thought of his mother watching you perform, specifically with him in mind, he was quickly reassured that she was more than amused by your eccentric proclaims of affection. She appreciates a confident woman speaking her mind, especially towards her son.

Smug Bastard x100 He’s making that concert seat look like a throne with how confident he looks, knowing full well that you are talking about him. Nobody else in the thousands seated near him. (Don’t mention how he might have a slight ego about being the second prince, he can’t give you the throne you deserve but he can give himself to you instead. Knowing you return the gesture makes him unreasonably happy)

Forgot it was being broadcasted until he got a facetime call from his brother congratulating him on having a mate of his very own, especially one so talented! Cheka starts begging him to bring you back to the palace and Leona hangs up before he can get the waterworks going.

Stuck between stunned, smug, and highly embarrassed. He has this goofy smile as he watches you strut across the stage, occasionally ducking his face into his hands when you purr the lyrics into the mic and wink at him in the crowd.

london has been incredible. ivy always loved coming here, she loved the sights, the food, it was a change from korea and michigan. she also really loved the accents, though she has a hard time understanding some of them.

performing for the fans brought out a new light in her, no matter what mood she's in, having fun on stage and seeing fans getting hyped along with them has always made her happy. and london was a fairly good audience, loud, exciting. it made them all feel so alive to be so welcomed.

"what's my name!" ivy yelled with a smile as the audience yells back her name. she shakes her head, with a fake disappointed look on her face, masking her smile that was fighting to come back. "not loud enough london! i said what's my name!" she yelled louder, getting an even louder, and some barks. "bark?" she asked, seeing if it would work. and before she could even move the arena was filled with barking. the boys all laughed as the girl looked back and teased mingi "they always scream louder for me"

the audience freaked out screaming, the boys laugh at her slightly dirty joke as mingi tilted his head and raised his eyebrows. she gives him an innocent smile before he laughs and they move on with the show.

that's one of her favorite thing with touring, interacting with the audience, the teasing between the stars and the fans. it made all of them feel closer to atiny.

she also really loved ready signs, flags, and whatever else the fans would bring. as long as they don't disrupt other people's views, she loves seeing them. as she was looking through the audience, she spotted a gay pride flag, and of course she's going to snatch that shit up. she crouches down and started reaching for it, that's when a few other atiny's started holding things up and showing other signs. she grabbed the flag and a stuffed kirby so she could give it to wooyoung.

as she turned, she saw her boyfriend walking over with a smile, he helps her wrap the flag around her shoulders as she shows him the 'mini wooyoung' as she called it. in the corner of her eye she saw another sign go up in the front.

'MINGI I CAN BE YOUR DESIRE INSTEAD.' mingi read it, starting to understand the meaning and then looked down at ivy, who seemed upset by the sign. she gets that fans will obviously love her and the boys, they will have crushes on them, they will write fanfiction and everything else. and that's fine. but sometimes they cross the line.

she's sure the fan meant no harm by it, she's sure they found it funny. but ivy didn't. and maybe she's overreacting, it's a possibility. but it still doesn't stop her from being upset. mingi tapped her waist, letting her know that her line was coming up before moving her away from the sign.

she put a smile back on and made her way to the other members and continued singing the lyrics to wave. she gave wooyoung the kirby plush, and appeared on camera wearing the flag, making everyone go nuts.

the concert went on, they do their quick changes, the messing around onstage, and of course the intense dancing. ivy planned something, and the boys knew it. but they just weren't sure what...

it's scary when ivy uses her knowledge and power, she holds a lot of it, but only uses it in certain circumstances. after the main setlist was over, they did their talk with atiny and all that. that's when they go backstage and get ready for their encore.

they get through turbulence, celebrate, and from, some of their most heartfelt songs. ivy is always surprised she makes it through those songs without crying, even now. looking at the fans, and seeing just how far they've made it as a team, a family, it surprises her with every stop.

the members go through and talk about touring more, making more music, how much they love atiny, the usual. after that it was finally time for the real, and ivy's plan.

the real was one of her favorite songs to perform, it was so fun and lively and she could really just be herself. the ending, was obviously the best part. some members and dancers jumps in the circle and freestyle. some time ivy and yunho would go out together and do a sneaky dance that they choreographed, fans always assume a duet video will be coming out soon. or she and mingi will go out and goof around.

nearing the end ivy whisper, well, more of yells, in mingi's ear about her plan. in return she received a shocked look but a shrug and a nod anyway. the two go in the middle, and mingi spins his girlfriend before kissing her lips. he grabs her leg and bends her back a little bit. the cameraman zooms in to give a better view before the lights go out

the fans can see hongjoong standing there frozen, too shocked and confused to move. seonghwa in the same position but wide eyes. yunho and jongho are laughing, shocked but cheering them on. wooyoung is just straight up laughing ass off and falling on san and the older stand there with his hand over his mouth. yeosang can't believe his eyes, so much so that he covers them with his hands.

It’s Analysis Friday about precisely why Hazbin Hotel is such a stand out.

But first - this is probably my last Hazbin Hotel-related analysis until the next season; give me asks during this long dry spell!

Why on this specific topic? Because I’m tired.

I’m all for subjectivity. People can just like or dislike things regardless of quality. Heck, I know Helluva Boss is part of the Hazbin world, but it gives me too much cringe and vicarious embarrassment to handle.

(Yeah, I’m weird. I know)

But I keep hearing people say Hazbin Hotel is mid or just relying on hype.

Those are fighting words!

We are getting quality on par with Disney movies for a tv series!

That’s crazy! Let’s break it down.

Musical numbers

Talented singers play the main crew. Stephanie Beatrix plays Mirabel Madrigal, Kimiko plays Izzy, etc.

There were 2 songs per episode! And because it is truly perfect for a musical, we even get thematic reprises and callbacks!

Does anyone recall when similar things have happened in animation? MLP:FiM had a glorious episode that was ALL musical with a reprise. That’s all I have at this scale outside of Disney.

Characters

I’ve always known Vivzie to put thought into her work, and this shines through so well in Hazbin.

Lucifer’s depression is similar to my own

Angel’s gradual changes and struggles are realistic

Charlie’s breed of passion is the same as mine in my career

Alastor’s extremely manipulative yet we all love him

Velvette had one of the best formal character intros I’ve seen in a long time

Hazbin Hotel works really hard to get away from stereotypes, and dives in past superficial traits.

Also, we get things like Valentino sounding like he’s squeaking because moths squeak. We don’t need these things!

Animation

You know what else we don’t need?

Airplane arms!

Complicated dance moves!

Cute leg swishies with cuter sound effects?

Every second you see is 10+ frames traditionally. (Idk the studio’s technical details). That’s wild to add in these complicated extra details! And they flow so nicely! This level of quality for 2D (and honestly 3D too most of the time) is unheard of in the West nowadays.

And on that, western adult animated shows typically are so poorly made, especially in the art. Even the few I have seen that have okay stories to tell absolutely stink in terms of visuals and movement.

Story

Yeah, this is the biggest weakness Hazbin Hotel has, no doubt. The story is actually an incredible premise, and truly done pretty well within the awful time constraints. I think everyone is valid in saying it was far too fast! Hopefully we get more (or longer) episodes in upcoming seasons.

But at the same time, this is also the nature of musicals. If you think this is fast, don’t watch the Les Miserables musical where everyone only sings. Idk why, but singing the entire time makes everything seem like you’re in a race car on autopilot.

Don’t forget; the symbolism just drips out of the screen in this show. The fact that I could still do more analyses even now is a testament to that with all the content I have done since it aired. Vivienne goes hard on the details.

But put yourself in Vivzie’s shoes. You do the impossible, shot for the moon while hoping for maybe the top of a 5-story building, and you were offered the stars. Your project has been a part of who you are before you even went to university, and a major company gives you a way to bring it to life? Why wouldn’t you settle for this good of a deal?

Innovation

People do not bring up often enough that Vivienne broke a glass ceiling separate from that of gender. She showed that YouTube animations can be taken seriously, and even be aired.

In this age, the Saturday morning cartoon blocks I grew up with no longer exist. There were tons of great shows, and I could talk with other kids about it. Nestled within these weekends were shows that ran short pilot episodes for potential series. The last time I saw one was Adventure Time’s pilot.

It’s been a whiiiiiiile.

So having a cutesy little indie pilot animation amongst thousands on YouTube be such high quality and get a mainstream platform? Spindlehorse made history!

Moreso, Helluva Boss is also demonstrating the capacity of indie studios like never before - and what may pave the way for the future of animation too.

Out of all the animated series running on YouTube, Glitch is the only creator who does 3D that I am aware of. Even Glitch’s work has only started within the past few years, ie after Vivienne managed the impossible.

So please, stop complaining about subjective parts so much. Hazbin Hotel objectively has some of the highest craftsmanship in western animation.

We are blessed that Vivienne’s dream has come true in such a glorious manner. When I discovered her back in 2012, I couldn’t have guessed the pilot would be so successful, nor that it would change what was possible for animation!

13. Crasher Wake

My dude has two left feet. He has no sense of rhythm, none at all. He tries to do complicated dance moves and falls on his ass at least once.

12. Bertha

This is mostly an age thing. If Bertha was say, 30 years younger, I'm sure she could probably be a better dancer than half the people on this list. She's higher than Crasher Wake because she doesn't fall on her ass.

11. Cynthia

I think she's really clumsy. She could pick up and understand dance moves and has an okay sense of rhythm, but it would take a while.

10. Byron

This is another case where if Byron was younger, I feel like he would absolutely be able to bust it out on the dance floor. But alas, he is over 40. He gets bonus points because he has better rhythm than Cynthia, but picks up and understands dance moves at the same rate as she does.

9. Volkner

He can dance. He just doesn't want to.

8. Lucian

This might be controversial, but I think Lucian could be a good dancer - but more of a ballroom style, of dancing. He's actually quite good at ballroom dancing, and the reason why he isn't any higher is because he's absolutely garbage at any other style.

7. Roark

So you might be noticing a pattern, in which I have the younger Sinnoh League members in the top 7. Because I think the younger league members would be good dancers. However Roark is the worst of the lot. But I do think he'd be a fairly decent dancer if he got training for it. Things like hip-hop or contemporary. Don't ask him to do a lyrical routine because he will punch you in the face.

6. Maylene

I am keeping in mind the stature of the league members. I think Maylene would do exceptionally well not only because of her size, because she already expresses her body through movement, and I think dance would be hella therapeutic for her considering her dad's a gambling addict.

5. Gardenia

She gives me ballerina vibes. Vibes of someone who's mother forced them to do ballet at age three and when Gardenia turned ten she stopped when she went on her Pokemon journey but seven years of ballet just don't go away. Sometimes she likes dancing in her gardens.

4. Fantina

If Fantina was twenty years younger she would have everyone in this list beat and it wouldn't be even close. I think it would make sense that Fantina was trained in the arts. She is a performer, above all.

3. Flint

Unlike his singing abilities, I think Flint could absolutely be a great dancer. He even looks like one. He could break it down on the dance floor, would make others try to dance with him (cough, cough Volkner) and is the ultimate hype man. I sorta HC that there were a lot of street performers in Sunyshore (the break dancers you see in NYC, and maybe he learned from there. It could explain why Volkner would know a thing or two about dancing too).

2. Candice

Always second best, when it comes to singing and dancing, I believe. She, like Gardenia, also gives off learning dance at age three vibes except she is totally in practice and continues to go to dance class once a week, as a hobby. She looks like someone who would enjoy tap and jazz. She likes the sound of the clicking of the tap shoes the most, and she enjoys swing dances that you'd see in the 40s.

Aaron

I know this is controversial, but hear. me. out.

This boy has the body of a dancer, flat-out. He has the best physique for a male dancer. It also helps that his mother used to be a dancer. So Aaron's mom put him in a dance class, when he just learned to walk, thinking that he would be into hip-hop or something else usually for boys. But no. While being good at all types of dance, Aaron shines in lyrical routines, like his mom :) I HC that he's a very sensitive person, and I think the emotional ballads of a lyrical routine would fit his character very well. His love for dance only grew once he saw how graceful and beautiful his bug-Pokemon moved, and wants to be just as perfect as them. On days off from the league when he's not in Eterna Forest, Aaron could be found in the basement of the Sinnoh League, and would dance for hours.

Nanami, Todo, Gojo, & Sukuna // no curse au

Nanami is the informed parent. From the moment he knows his s/o is expecting he’s reading and researching and making sure he’s prepared to give his child the best life possible. He does so well too, his patience and gentleness towards his children is amazing.

You’ll never see him complaining about middle of the night wake ups, the most you’ll get is a little frustrated breath through his nose (though never in front of the baby). He isn’t put off by tantrums, or food going flying, or a little destructive streak. He knows it’s all developmentally appropriate, he knows it’s to be expected, and he knows how he reacts is important.

His favourite age is 1-4, when they start really communicating and opening up to the world. He loves explaining things, and answering questions, even if that answer is sometimes “I don’t know sweetheart, but let’s find out.”

He can be stern when appropriate, holding firm boundaries even in the face of flying toys and stomping feet, but he really is a softie for his child. “Will you stay until I fall asleep Daddy?” Well he’s going to be curling up uncomfortably in their tiny bed until he’s fallen asleep himself. The sore neck in the morning is worth it.

“Daddy you’re the Trash Princess, I have to slay you and stop your family’s cruel reign.” He’s taping an empty chocolate wrapper to his shirt, donning a tiara, and getting stabbed by a plastic sword as many times as needed to make his baby laugh.

Todo is the hype parent. His sweet baby angel has done nothing wrong ever.

He’s incredibly supportive too, whether it’s a sport, music, art, anything. He’ll be looking for classes to sign them up for and anything they need to be the best at it. The only thing he asks is that whatever his kid wants to do they do with their whole heart - and they’ll surely have the confidence for it with how he’s raised them.

Picture that parent that’s screaming in the crowd like it’s a pro game during little league games. Or the big beefy guy crying at his kid’s dance recital because they’re just so skilled it moves him to tears. Or they’re at a spelling bee and he’s in the crowd telling everyone around him that his kid is an actual genius.

His partner needs to temper the ego their child could potentially have, but otherwise he and the kid will be thick as thieves. There might be some choppy waters when they hit that age where they’re filled with uncertainty over their interest and pursuits, and it’s hard for Todo to be okay with them taking that time to be a little aimless if they happen to want to distance themselves from any kind of after school activities, but in the end he will understand that happiness might come in a form he hasn’t yet thought of.

Gojo is the fun parent. Brownies before dinner, jumping on the bed, staying up late to play games.

Until then though, the newborn through toddler stage absolutely throws him. It’s not the sleepless nights, or the messiness, or the worry about germs. It’s the confusion. When his baby is upset he can go through the checklist of “fed, clean, comfortable,” he can sing and rock them, or try to distract them with toys. All things he’s heard could work, but sometimes that just doesn’t matter. He doesn’t like feeling helpless like that, but a child’s emotions are unpredictable and he has to get used to that.

The 4+ stage is his favourite, they love his silliness, they love how seamlessly he goes along with their antics. This age is when his kids are absolutely in the palm of his hand, so don’t be surprised when they have a strong parental preference for him and complain that no one else does the voice for their favourite stuffed animal right, or no one else knows just how much milk they want in their cereal.

He’s just always ready for any adventure with them. They want to go camping? He’s buying a tent and setting it up in the backyard that night. They want to stop by McDonald’s on the way to school? They’ll only be a little late. They have a convoluted play they’re putting on and they need grown ups to play the part of two horses and a dragon? He’s calling his friends and telling them it’s an emergency.

Don’t mistake it for weakness though. He will sit back and let his kid learn a lesson if they need to. Climbing somewhere they shouldn’t be? They’ll fall on their butt because they need to to learn. He’s also not a pushover by any means. He has no problems telling his kids no when he thinks it’s necessary. He just thinks it’s important to have wiggle room in some cases.

Sukuna is the tough love parent. Training wheels off his kid’s bike the second they managed to figure out everything with them still on. Pulling them out deep enough in the pool where their toes can’t reach the bottom.

It is certainly tough. But, it’s also certainly love. He expects so much of his child, he knows they can do it, he knows the world is only holding them back, he knows life will be easier if they have a thickened skin. But… his child pulls his heart open more than he ever thought. It makes him think of himself when he was young, it makes him think that maybe the things he went through weren’t because he was too soft as a child, maybe it was because the world was too hard on him.

He slips back into those old ways of thinking often. A cold “get up, you’re fine.” When they skin their knee because it was too early to take the training wheels off. A “sink or swim” when they panic in the deep end. But then he’s carrying them into the house to give them a popsicle while he cleans their knee. And he’s putting them on his back while he wades through the water, letting them cling on and practice their kicking every so often.

He’s a parent that thrives with a teen, to his surprise. He hadn’t been looking forward to it, to be honest, with the constant “just wait” doom and gloom parents get. Messy emotions, being unable to stand him, talking back constantly. It’s a lot for him to think of, especially once he’s just gotten into his stride with parenting and his kid thinks of him as a big tough cool guy. But then… the teen years go just fine. Sure his kid is dealing with the volatile emotions and social minefield that is being that age, but Sukuna speaks to them plainly, and it gets through to them somehow.

Sometimes there’s that “you just don’t get it” response, but never in an upset way. They’ve learned to take their dad for what he is at that point. They aren’t hardened, but they can roll with the punches. He isn’t soft, but he’s human.

A Review Of Nimona

Despite some reservations, I really liked Nimona.

I open with the conclusion because this review starts off quite pessimistic and is rather long, so that way those of you who won't make it to the end will not leave with the false impression that I didn't like Nimona; I really much did.

I have a complicated relationship with 3D animation.

Well no, actually, it's a pretty simple relationship: I hate almost all of it.

It's not that there's any reason why 3D animation cannot be good in the abstract. I'm not a medium snob; you can tell good stories in live action, in 2D animation, in 3D animation, in stop-motion, with hand puppets, with shadow puppets, with paper cutouts ; in theory, it absolutely doesn't matter.

Except, in practice, most 3D animated films range from mediocre and forgetable to actively repulsive.

Visually, they almost all look the same, to the point that it's really hard to distinguish studio styles at all (without looking it up, between Coco and Encanto, which is Pixar and which is Disney?) Storywise, it's all very pain-by-numbers, hero's-journey crap with little deviation. But what gets those from merely nondescript to actively annoying is the tone. So so many of these movies revolve around "hype" and "cool" teenagers who constantly strike poses, raise their eyebrows, and talk in one-liners. Everything is manic and noisy, there's not a single moment to breathe, because if nothing stimulating happens on screen for more than three seconds, surely the audience will stop watching, so there's always someone gesticulating, dancing, singing, making faces, or all four at once. And everything has to be crammed with pop culture references and topical allusions so that the audience can relate.

Don't get me wrong, it's good to have media you can relate to, media that speak of modern problems and adress a modern audience in its own terms. But there has to be less insultingly condescending ways of doing it than shouting "HELLO FELLOW KIDS" over and over for 90 minutes.

Let's be clear: this isn't happening because the people involved are not competent or because the budgets are too tight. Very talented people work hard (routinely to the point of exploitation in fact) on these movies, and they actually get quite strong budgets reflecting the benefits they're expected to make.

And that's the actual problem: there's too much financial stake in 3D animated films, too many producers and shareholders breathing down the neck of everyone else, too many committees trying to craft the perfect crowd-pleaser, too many rewrites and re-rewrites, too much fear of failling to capture the children-and-teenager audience and losing hundreds of millions. So everything must be made to appeal to the widest, shallowest base as possible, and every second of screentime must be an attention-grabber that leaves absolutely no chance of anyone getting bored.

Mirroring this, there's no reason for 2D animated and stop-motion movies to be inherently better than 3D ones. They are so in practice because big studios see them as uncool and no longer profitable, which means that the only people who still make these kinds of movies have to actually deeply care about them and go in with the full awareness that their next project might well be a commercial flop that will set them back for a decade on the project after that or might even end their career.

So when it was announced that Nimona, a webcomic I had really liked for its quirky, original, both humorous and dark tone, was going to be adapted by Blue Sky Studios, who had afflicted the world with not one, not two, not three, but five Ice Age movies, well, I was not happy at all, because that seemed like worst possible match. It was hard to imagine them doing anything other than remove anything remotely interesting about the story and turn it into a generic seizure-inducing mess with poop jokes because that's all that they do with their movies.

I feel bad about it retrospectively, but my first instinct when I heard that the movie was cancelled was to rejoice that we had been spared from what would certainly have been a complete disaster and a terrible insult to the original comic. And the revival of the project, while it was always a positive for the actual people involved, left me largely indifferent.

Who would I have had instead to adapt this into a movie? Why, Cartoon Saloon of course! A fantasy story about a free-spirited, hyper-active, shapeshifting red-headed girl and the friendship she seeks with another outcast character, leading to a fight against the instutions of law and order that turn out to be corrupt and evil? Why, they would have loved making that movie.

Except they did make that movie. What I'm describing is not just the premise of Nimona; it's also that of Wolfwalkers, the absolutely amazing 2D animated film that Cartoon Saloon released in 2020, as the third part of their "Irish Folklore Trilogy" (following The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea).

Ok fine then, if Wolfwalkers already exists, it would be redundant for Cartoon Saloon to make it again, so I guess Nimona can be in its own thing; if it doesn't work out, I'll just rewatch Wolfwalkers.

Then I saw that ND Stevenson, the author of the original comic, was actually really enthusiastic about the project — which in itself isn't a definite proof, many times has a creator be enthusiastic about an upcoming adaptation of their work only to get burned when the actual thing came out, but at least it was a positive sign. Maybe I was going to give this movie a chance.

Then the movie came out, and I saw a lot of positive reviews from people who I trusted not to be easily swayed by any old crappy animated film just because it had some queer representation. Ok, ok, fine, y'all win, I'll watch it.

So I watched it and… I actually had quite a really good time.

I liked that there actually was a conscious stylistic choice in the animation, this sort of 3D-2D hybrid technique, like very-advanced-cel-shading seems like it's a lot more flexible when it comes to actually give an animated movie a distinct, signature style — and it blends in a lot better than pure 3D, as seen on how Ghibli has used those techniques for complex individual shots since Princess Mononoke in 1997 — a movie mostly made in 2D traditional animation, but that has a number of digitally made shots seamlessly incorporated using those 3D-painted-over-to-look-like-2D techniques. By the way if you like Princess Mononoke, you should also watch Wolfwalkers, it has a number of similar vibes!

I liked the humor! For the most part, it worked, and some jokes were actually pretty clever in their absurdity, like having Nimona pull out a polaroid picture she's somehow taken a few minutes ago just for the sake of a visual gag, even tho we've already established that this is a futuristic fantasy setting (which is also a thing I like, the worldbuilding was pretty cool) where everyone has smart phones (but it also works as a subtle early hint that Nimona is much, much older than she seems).

I liked that queer representation was front but not center: several main characters are openly, explicitely queer, but this isn't a plot point, this isn't something that they have to defend or call attention to. It's just a normal character trait, and the problems, drama and obstacles these characters face do not stem from them being queer.

I liked the story, the themes it went for and how it executed them, twisting traditional feudal fantasy and hero's-journey tropes but without being heavy handed and obnoxious about it, showing that you can play with a genre and pick apart its problematic implications without being a scatological edgelord about it (yes I loathe the Shrek franchise, why do you ask?)

It still has some of the things that make me strongly dislike modern 3D movies, but it's contained. It's here and there, but not to the point of ruining the story. Yes Nimona is an out-of-control nuclear-powered goblin, but the movie actually goes into why she is like that, and suddenly it's a lot more interesting to have a character be manic and constantly at 11 because she has a lot of pent up anger and insecurities about being alone than just because that's a quirky character trait to throw in randomly; and the movie does manage to have a few quiet and reflexive moments, and those matter a lot in the story.

I am of two minds about its qualities as an adaptation. On the one hand, even if this is a very different story from the original, the themes are there, the spirit of the original story is there; different media have different strength and what would work in comic format wouldn't necessarily work in an animated movie. Having the movie tells its own story makes it less redundant compared to the comic, more complimentary — you can know the one by heart and still get surprised and awed by discovery when you get to the other. And updating the material can be good; people always complain about Disney's track record of sanitizing fairy tales, but I can assure you that you don't want to see a faithful adaptation of Sleeping Beauty on screen. In general, an adaptation making significant changes to the story isn't a deal breaker for me, some of my favorite movies massively depart from their source material, usually for the better.

On the other hand, it seems to be almost a constant with animated adaptations that the source story is going to get discarded. It gives the feeling once again that the people involved in making these adaptations do not take the medium seriously and cannot imagine that these stories could stand on their own without needing heavy rewriting, that they can't see them as deserving a faithful adaptation. I understand why a lot of these changes happened for Nimona, but I still regret some of the stuff from the comic. Like yeah, it's very clever that in this version, Nimona has essentially no origin story and actively refuses to talk about how she came to be, but then we miss out on this absolute wham moment from the comic, Ballister telling her "Nimona, you forgot your own backstory!"

So in the end, I have to take the movie for what it is, rather than look too closely as what it is an adaptation of. Those are two different takes and stories on the same characters and themes, both with their strong points, and I think I can live with that.

So in the end, I had a pretty good time. It had some small issues, it's probably not the best version possible of that story, but it's still far, far better than anything I was expecting. I you loved it, I do still recommend checking out Wolfwalkers as soon as possible if you haven't already, you might well love that one too.

“Hey everybody, how ya doin’ Charlie Gillespie here!” Charlie smiled into the camera. You were seated next to him in a chair with your arms crossed over your chest, waiting for the crew and cast to get things ready for the big number they had to shoot today. Charlie looked over at you and put his arm around your shoulders. “I am here today with the lovely, talented, beautiful…Y/n Y/L/N!” He exclaimed emphasizing every compliment he threw at you. You couldn’t help but laugh at him.

“Hello everyone.” You waved at the camera smiling.

“You can’t tell…but um, she’s sad.” Charlie leaned forward like he was trying to whisper. You playfully hit him.

“Am not!” You protested.

“Yes she is.” He mouthed looking at the camera as if he was in the Office. “See, we’re about to do this huge, amazing shoot, and well, Y/n here. She can’t dance.” Charlie shrugged, causing you to stare at him with your mouth agape, and looking offended. “Well she can dance, but she’s not allowed to dance to the music in the scene.” Charlie cleared up his explanation laughing. “Wanna tell the fans why you can’t dance.” He turned to look at you with those beautiful eyes that seemed to change from green, to blue at times.

“This will be out after the show airs so why not. I play a ghost on the show, who can’t hear music. She doesn’t know why, and that’s why she tries seeking help from Caleb Covington muah ha ha.” You joked. Charlie was grinning from ear to ear. You were funny and you liked to joke around on set like he did, it was why he took such a liking to you. You were fun to be around, and he liked being around you. You were the only one he’d like to sit by in between scene changes. When you didn’t say anything further, he turned to you.

“That’s it?” He questioned. You shrugged. ”Where the flavor, where’s the sizzle. That spark. This girl.” He gestured to you with his thumb while staring at the camera. “Anyway, back to what we were talking about. Y/n gets sad because she can’t dance along like everyone else, so I, Charlie Gillespie.” He put a hand on his chest. “Have decided to take it upon myself, to help her out. You know…make her happy.” Charlie was always trying to cheer you up before any scene that involved music. “So without further ado.” Charlie stood up from his chair, then climbed on top of the table. He looked around catching the eyes of those who noticed him on top of the tabletop. He smiled down at you pointing at you then shouted. “This one’s for you, Y/n!” He exclaimed. Your eyes widened, Charlie was always going out of his way to do something so extra, to be the one who hyped the cast and crew members. It’s what made you like him so much. You smiled as he started singing.

“Everybody now!” Charlie sang. “Rollin’, rollin’, rollin’ on the river.” Charlie clapped his hands together as he moved side to side. “I can’t hear you!” He placed a hand over the back of his ears. “Rollin’, ooooohhh, rollin’, uhh yeah.” Charlie then down at you extending his arm out.

“Rollin’ on the river.” The cast and crew sang.

“Whoo!”

Charlie had pulled you up on top of the table with him. You laughed at his theatrics as he grabbed your hand and spun you around. Owen, Booboo, and Jeremy, along with a few others, like Kenny, and Cheyenne smiled up at the two of you goofy off and having a good time. They could tell just how infatuated Charlie was with you. They liked to tease him about it when you weren’t there. You two lit up a whole room just by being yourselves.

You giggled as you followed Charlie’s movement. He had swung his arms side to side. He was so happy to be able to help you get through scenes. He was willing to keep helping you get the dancing out of your system, if it meant it brought a smile to your face.

He let you keep dancing and grooving as he took a step down to have one foot on his chair and one still on the table. “Do wap doo doo do wap doo doo do wap doo doo do.” He sang out then turned to Kenny to play an air guitar. “Dunna da da, dunna da da, dunna da, da da da dada da…daaaa.” He trailed off.

He laughed helping you down from the table. Once your feet hit the floor you almost lost your balance but Charlie kept you up right.

“God you’re such a dork.” You laughed as he smiled at you. His eyes twinkling with gleam. “Hey at least the dancing is out of your system. You’re not sad anymore.” He teased pulling you into a hug then pulled apart so that the makeup artists could retouch a few things. The camera panned around to him again causing Charlie to lean forward. “W-We break, we break out into real live musicals too guys.”

You leaned in too to be in the frame of the camera. “Correction, Charlie breaks into real live musicals guys.” You laughed. Charlie pulled away from his makeup artist to lean over and press a kiss onto your cheek. He smiled, quickly, squinting his eyes and smiling.

“Thank you for that.” You giggled up at your boyfriend. Though to the world he was your best friend. As you two liked to say during interviews.

“Anything for you.” He nudged you with his shoulder. He looked around making sure no cameras were around.

Once the makeup artist moved away, and so did the camera like he thought it did. Charlie grabbed a hold onto the bottom of your chair and scooted you closer. The cast and as well as Kenny were all for keeping your relationship a secret. Though Charlie was all for letting the whole world know you were his, but this was such a big break for the both of you, you both wanted to take it slow. Charlie didn’t think that the video was gonna reach the web, but boy was he wrong. The camera person was circling the camera around the room to capture everyone in it, and on the last second of the video, they caught Charlie. Charlie forgot about knowing the risk and didn’t care as much today because he was so content. He didn’t think leaning in to quickly peck your lips would soon cause a mayhem throughout the fandom. The camera pun so fast you could hardly tell, right?

“I love you so much.” He pulled away.

“I love you too.” You pressed your head onto his as Kenny called for everyone to take their places.
