is it okay to learn gaeilge if you aren’t irish but most of your heritage actually is from ireland? i totally get what you were saying with your other post about barely having irish heritage and making it an aesthetic but if that’s not the case it’s not like a closed language right?
Ok so I’m going to go on a bit of a rant here and explain my post and my feelings about this.
First and foremost, it’s not a closed language.
More people learning Irish is always a good thing. However, I think you should ask yourself your intentions for learning Irish. This is where Irish people’s annoyance at US Americans can come in.
Firstly is regards to my posts about my frustrations at Americans making my post about Ireland and our relationship with Irish and efforts to preserve it, about themselves. Sometimes the best way to be and ally to a cultural group that you are not in, is to say nothing and to simply listen. This is something we deal with on the daily, and have dealt with for centuries. Having lived in the USA for centuries and now culturally being an American, you do not feel this.
I think because America is such a mish mash of DNA, you guys have a different idea of race than we do. We identify as nationalities rather than race. Yes we are black or white, but first and foremost we are Irish or Nigerian or Korean or whatever!
An Irish person is someone who lives in Ireland, who is immersed in our culture, who is affected by our laws and politics. Not someone who had a relative centuries ago that was Irish, but is now part of a different culture. You can have zero Irish ancestry and be Irish because you live on the island! Minimising a whole culture down to blood percentages is weird and not at all how it works.
Here is when the “celtiboo” (Celtic weaboo, ie, someone who is obsessed with and fetishises the Celtic nations such as Ireland) issue comes in. Someone could have ten different DNA percentages of different European countries, yet they focus in on Ireland. This is because of the fetishised idea that people have of us and our culture. People refuse to listen to Irish people, and will only believe their idea of what our culture and history is. I know this first hand living in a city that is inundated with tourists on the daily. My sister is a tour guide at a massive historical site here. US Americans won’t listen to us.
You don’t really see this with these same people who might have French DNA for example. And there is a massive difference between our Languages. French is a language that is far from endangered. It is itself a colonisers language. You learn French so you can go to French speaking countries and use your skills. With Irish, realistically you won’t get to use it. We only get to use it when studying in school or in Gaeltachts (Irish speaking areas), and they aren’t that common.
So you have to ask yourself why you do you want to learn it? Is it for a gimmick or party trick? Something you can pull out that other people in your country won’t have heard of?
When we say we want to preserve Irish, we mean that we want our people in Ireland to be able to speak it. We aren’t trying to spread that language around the world. We just want to restore things to the way they were before England colonised us.
Anyways, in conclusion, just please don’t claim to be a nationality that your aren’t and try to speak on our issues. Please be respectful of native languages and when people from the affected group speak on our troubles, just listen! Please don’t reply making it about yourself and your whatever percentage DNA that put you in “exactly the same position” as us, because it doesn’t.

I really like giving the nations weird quirks/reactions/powers/physical traits, like how Finland’s back gets itchy when Estonia talks about him in canon. I think its a fun idea, so I wrote this out for a fic awhile ago:
“Anytime a new type of dinosaur was discovered in America his brother’s hair would get so frizzy he looked like a dandelion. Canada was lucky enough to witness the discovery of the T. rex in person, not from the actual site, but from a meeting room in Washington D.C.. The static electricity was strong enough that every the diplomat in the room felt the effects themselves. They looked like a whole field of dandelions at all stages of life. They had agreed to postpone that meeting until a time when America was not a walking, talking tesla coil”

M would be obsessed with the fact that vault-tec dropped the bombs bc she's a paranoid freak who's been running off a conspiracy theory that america nuked itself as a population control tactic and the rest of the world is doing fine
but the point is that she's supposed to be wrong!!!!!

God, reminds me that I wrote a (currently unfinished) fanfic for my Ryuenix AU. The idea was that Karuma has been in the Naruhodo line's possession up until Phoenix and, around after Dual Destinies, he decides that he'd give it back to Asogi's descendant (I named him Gisei Asogi), only for him to be killed and Phoenix to be framed. Apollo had to defend him in court.
In context, before this trial, Ryunosuke being Phoenix's ancestor was NOT common knowledge due to past prejudice he and his family faced in the area he lived in when he was little so his parents decided to ditch the Naruhodo name and became the Wrights, trying their hardest to be accepted in the American society and not mentioning their Japanese heritage (despite how famous Ryunosuke was). I figure that, despite the anti-Japanese sentiment and anti-immigrant were not enacted in Japanifornia as it is irl, there'd still a bit prejudice against Japanese people due to WW2. Because of this, Phoenix has an internalized fear of rejection if he were to out himself as Ryuichi Naruhodo (an unfounded fear in the current state of Japanifornia but still).
So like, in trial, Apollo initally managed to capitalized on the fact that the supposed killer was someone named 'Naruhodo R.' and not Phoenix thus having little to no motive on the case, only for the prosecution (I wrote Simon in the fic) to reveal his birth name, pulling him back as the suspected culprit.
That's as far as I wrote, but I remember the actual killer was Gisei Asogi's Western wife Mina Discree. I forgot her motive but given the pun in her name, I think it has something to do with xenophobia. Or that she viewed the Naruhodo as unworthy of Karuma but has little love for Gisei that's why she killed her husband to implicate Phoenix idk
Afterwards, Phoenix wasn't found guilty and ended up sending Karuma back to the living Asogi family members in order to maintain good relationship between the two. I can see that the Naruhodo-Asogi relationship started to deteriorate after a certain generations, only rekindled recently by Phoenix and Gisei's generation.

We See Each Other: A Black, Trans Journey Through TV and Film
Tre'vell Anderson with Angelica Ross
A groundbreaking look at the history of transgender representation in TV and film, by an of-the-moment and in-demand culture reporter.
WE SEE EACH OTHER is a personal history of trans visibility since the beginning of moving images. A literary reckoning, it unearths a transcestry that’s long existed in plain sight and in the shadows of history’s annals, and further contextualizes our present moment of increased representation. The films and television shows that Tre’vell covers include: Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil, Psycho, Holiday Heart, Boys Don’t Cry, America’s Next Top Model, Some Like It Hot, Survivor, Tangerine, Pose, RuPaul's Drag Race and much more. Though there have been trans memoirs and histories, there has never been a book quite like this, nor is anyone more suited to write it than Tre’vell.
“I don’t remember exactly when I was taught to hate myself," says Tre’vell Anderson in We See Each Other's introduction. As the narrative unfolds, Tre'vell knits together the history of trans people on screen with stories of their life growing up and their formative experiences as a Black, trans journalist.

mdceleste: September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and it's an important reminder that cancer does not discriminate and is on the rise. While brilliant minds are working hard to unearth a cure, Ronald McDonald House New York provides around-the-clock care and support for kids and families who travel to NYC for treatment. It's a privilege to work with them to create some happy moments and special memories while they're far from home and battling unimaginable hardship. I want to thank Sebastian for always thinking of the kids and asking how he can help. Don has also gone above & beyond to help raise money and awareness for RMH-NY and last week they came out to spend a fun-filled day with the families. These are some of my favorite behind-the-scenes moments from our summer sundae event. The afternoon was filled with so much laughter and I can't thank them enough for their love, patience, time, and kindness. Thanks to @lisastaryakphotography for taking these beautiful photos and @forcupsakesnyc for the delicious custom Captain America / Winter Soldier cookies! 🙏❤️🎗️ #throwbackthursday #sebastianstan #donsaladino #childhoodcancer #pediatriccancer #advocacy #forthekids #mdcproductions @rmhnewyork

alright. got another stupid splatoon headcanon for u guys.
Bowling is a MASSIVE sport in Octarian society, like, on the level of football in America (and by extension, I guess Clam Blitz to Inklings?). Maybe while they were digging their huge underground living spaces they unearthed human bowling alleys, maybe they were intact enough for Octos to reverse-engineer the rules. Maybe they found a TON of bowling trophies and deduced that it was a sport that held great importance in Human society, and took up the mantle to continue the sport’s proud tradition. Octo teenagers have posters of the hottest members of their local bowling teams. Grown adults show up to matches dressed head-to-toe in team colors and lose their GOURDS when the MVP rolls a strike. The amount of inspirational movies about an underdog bowling team rising to the top. The stories of high school romance between the shy kid and the captain of the bowling team. the normalization of bowling shirts and shoes as casual clothing. its inescapable in octo society. and cultural differences be damned they’re going to import ALL of that into Inkling society

Yo! Humble Bundle has a great deal on art software and resources going on for $30 USD (about $40ish CAD) that comes with a 1 year license for Clip Studio Paint PRO, a license for Paintstorm Studio, AND a license for Realistic Paint! The latter of which I had WAY TOO MUCH FUN drawing in, it's less of a drawing app and more like an interactive relaxation art game because it fuses realistic art tools such as pencils, watercolor, and oil paint with a very interactive UI. Look what I made with it using the charcoal tools! And unlike my art classes in college, no mess! 😭😆 (you can watch the timelapse if you want to see it made in real time, in which i struggle to draw a single nose LMAO)
Tumblr media
Soo yeah, this bundle is super worth it especially if you don't have Clip Studio Paint PRO yet and have been wanting to try it. It also comes with some 3D models and other resources for Clip Studio that are pretty handy, but the three pieces of software it comes with are definitely the real value here. It's only available for THREE MORE DAYS !! and as per Humble Bundle tradition, the profits from the bundles goes towards charity - in this case, it's No Kid Hungry, a charity organization that helps provide free school lunches to children in America.
(oh, and in case you're someone who already owns Clip Studio, I can confirm you CAN just give the license key to someone else, which is what I did LMAO)
This isn't a sponsored post or anything btw I just had a blast making charcoal art in it and I'm super hyped to play around with all the other tools it has to offer, it's full of a lot of fun secrets that I'm still unearthing (•̀ᴗ•́)و

I was cleaning out my drafts and found this tiny thing about vampires. For you, my beloved 💜 (ahem, middle-aged Val Kilmer).
Tomek Kazansky wakes from a dead sleep when a pair of hands close tightly around his ears, smothering the distant knell of a bell.
His blue eyes fly open to the sight of his ojciec chrzestny — his godfather — bent over him stiffly, stinking of nalewki, with an ax from the barn looped through his belt.
The old man’s eyes are cold, assessing, as he drinks in the sight of a five-year-old Tomek, the bastard son of a Polish nun who never named a father. His warm skin clings to its golden color, even when winter traps them in their homes and away from the sun. He is ruddy and strong, his little round face always upturned towards the sky and seeking out parts unknown. He is Polish and he holds their secrets in the clicking of his young bones, in the caul he was born with — just like his mother, his Mama.
“Come, Tomek.” His godfather, Piotr Czajkowski, says. “We must cut off her head by sunrise.”
His Mama’s grave is unquiet, that’s what his godfather says as they walk through the moonlit night and Tomek struggles beneath the weight of the heavy shovel handed to him. She has only been buried a day, dying before she could take The Sacrament.
“She is a vjesci now, lost to us.” His godfather growls — a vampire, as they unearth the pinewood box that houses her now.
Tomek has heard stories of becoming a vjesci for all his life. Babies born the way he was, the way his Mama was, born en caul — inside their sacs — are destined to wake from death as a vjesci. The only way to prevent the change is to eat the dried remains of the sac on the eve of the seventh year of life. His Mama never did. Tomek knows the rules, the way all the children in his village do, on how to prevent his vjesci mother from rising out of her unquiet grave and killing him. That is the first task of any vjesci, to slaughter their friends and family — ringing the church bell to signify their deaths and harbinging many others.
His Mama looks like she’s sleeping when they pry open her coffin, her cheeks still ruddy red and her hands flexible when his godfather lifts them: signs of life.
There are six holes in her white dress, as if she had been eating the fabric away.
That is the only proof his godfather needs before he — reaches a hand inside and lets her fingers coil around his.
She blinks open eyes of sanguine red and her lips curl in a bloody smile as she looks right at Tomek, her mouthful of sharp fangs reflecting off the light of the moon.
“Hello, Tomek.” She coos, “It’s almost time, little one. You will come home to us.”
His godfather flashes a mouthful of similar fangs, and Tomek remembers — his godfather died last summer in the barn, his ax slipped while he was splitting wood.
Tomek’s eyes grow wide and terrified, backing up to nearly trip into an open grave.
Come home, Tomek…
Come home, Tomek…
On the final night of Tom Kazansky’s life — he’s tired. His body is older than it should be, ravaged by a disease more nefarious than any of the monsters that haunted his childhood. Nightmares, dreams long forgotten, half-truths buried by a child who moved to America and left Poland behind to rot — not realizing how the tendrils of that life are woven into his very being, holding him fast.
He dies in his sleep, a peaceful death, his tracheostomy grows clogged with secretions as he sleeps and he passes without a struggle.
The man he loves is miles away, protecting their child, as Tom Kazansky breathes his last.
He just never expected to wake up again — or to wake up hungry.

All Aboard: The Journey of Locomotives in the U.S. 🚂💨💨💨
Tumblr media
A train's horn and the rhythmic clatter of wheels on rails are more than just sounds. They are echoes of an era that transformed America. Delving deep into the National Archives Catalog, we unearth treasures that tell the tale of the nation's love affair with locomotives.
Tumblr media
The dawn of American rail travel began in the early 19th century. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, founded in 1827, marked the nation's entry into the world of rail. Locomotives like the Tom Thumb demonstrated the potential of train travel, even if they occasionally lost races to horse-drawn carriages.
Tumblr media
By the 1860s, the monumental task of connecting the East to the West was achieved with the First Transcontinental Railroad. This incredible feat, symbolized by the golden spike at Promontory Summit in Utah, stitched the fabric of the nation together, making cross-country travel faster and more accessible than ever before.
Tumblr media
The golden age of railroads ushered in luxurious train journeys. Trains like the Pullman Sleeping Cars offered Americans unprecedented comfort, making long-distance travel not just bearable but enjoyable. Meanwhile, iconic stations like New York's Grand Central Terminal and D.C.'s Union Station became symbols of the grandeur and promise of rail travel.
Tumblr media
As the nation progressed, so did the role of trains. They were vital in transporting troops during wars, crucial for trade, and a lifeline for communities far from urban centers. However, with the advent of the 20th century and the rise of cars and airplanes, the prominence of train travel waned.
Tumblr media
From the smoky beginnings in the 1800s to the streamlined trains of today, locomotives have been an integral part of America's journey, carrying not just people and goods, but dreams and hopes of a constantly evolving nation.

This is gonna be a bit of a long rambling personal post sooooo do what you will with that information
The way that Butchered Tongue makes me literally sob
Every time I learn more about Irish history and I learn why my name is spelled the way it is and why my family had to come here makes me feel sick
My last name is Egan, it should be Mac Aodhagáin but when the English colonized Ireland they changed the spelling of last names to kill their language and it happened for hundreds of years
This specific line of my family lived in Offaly for centuries until they were starved out of their own country by their queen who had stewardship over them.
But Irish is still spoken, I have ways of learning it, and people are taking back their names and the names of places. They failed at destroying that culture and I am so openly and annoyingly proud of my all my weird amount of Irish ancestry
But if it weren't for the colonization and imperialization of Ireland my name would still be Mac Aodhagáin. My language would be Irish and I'd be living on the same land that almost every other person in my line has lived on.
It makes me want to curl up and cry and it makes me so fucking angry and if this is how I feel about something that was so tame compared to what happened in America then I can only barely begin to imagine how Native Americans feel about how their land and their people and their cultures and their languages have been ravaged. And every other group of people who've had their cultural identity and their population obliterated for the sake of fucking profit
It's horrific what human beings do for the sake of control over other human beings. It makes me sick
I grieve the cultures that were stolen from me, both Irish and Scottish, and I’ve spent several years trying to reconnect with them, but I also know that it’ll never be the same as it could’ve been if they hadn’t been butchered by the English monarchy for hundreds of years. And that hurts very deeply
I encourage everyone to learn about their family history, and in turn it’ll help you learn about who you are.
And I also encourage everyone to listen to Unreal Unearth because it’s very good
