wibta if i refused to help my classmates going forward?
i am in university for a science degree. i have been struggling for almost my entire degree due to undiagnosed ADHD and autism, as well as my habit from grade school of working myself too hard. i went into burnout from 2020-2022 and failed most courses i took. i had to cut down on my work significantly so i could stay in university and finish my degree. it's been 5 years and i'm just over halfway finished. the end's not in sight yet, but it's getting there.
this semester, i'm taking two courses that i've struggled in previously and am retaking actually. the term will most likely be over once this is posted. one i've finished twice but didn't have a high enough grade to move forward (chemistry) and the other i've dropped 2 times before to avoid failing (calculus). the subject areas might give more context, and my chemistry course isn't introductory. they're also notoriously very difficult, and most people end up retaking this chemistry course several times. they're both needed for my degree and a similar degree. someone in both classes (2 different people) made group chats specifically so we could help each other. at first it was a very good idea, and i myself benefitted from them, managing to get a really high mark on a math assignment because of the group chat and sharing our work/processes.
this term is the one term we have a mid-semester break, and while the details are irrelevant here, i went away during this break, and i came back in a fairly poor mental state. i didn't want to share my work anymore, and said i was uncomfortable doing so. this got me mocked (i believe, but no one's commented on it or said anything to me about it) in my math class group chat when i asked for the notes after having to leave class early due to the noise. i have misophonia, and i was incredibly close to shouting "shut the fuck up" one say when they honestly just wouldn't stop talking. it's been a problem this term in this class where several groups in the class have been chatting amongst themselves during lecture. my friend (i think we're friends?) emailed our professor (i think i was named in the email), and he addressed the class about it, but as a whole, has told me directly that there wasn't much else he could do about it since they might be talking to each other to understand better.
at this point, there's only about 3 weeks left of classes and then finals, so it's not worth dropping out, especially since i don't think i'm in danger of failing. but that was all kind of just background info. it's been a rough semester for me.
in my chemistry class, we have weekly lab reports. they aren't huge, 10+ page reports, and i can usually do them in about 2-3 hours of work total. i usually work on them in small pieces throughout the week, so i can focus on other assignments as well as lectures. they're due at the beginning of lab, and we have lab on friday afternoons. this wouldn't be an issue if not for thursdays.
at the beginning of the semester, i made myself kinda known as Someone Who Has Answers. i like to help people when they're struggling, and i know that these are difficult classes, and i have past experience taking them with these instructors specifically, so i helped in any which way i could. after our mid-semester break, i was in no mood to help anyone. but on thursday evenings and friday mornings, i would get text messages from a few people asking me about the lab report. but not just a few messages. i would get asked on EVERY BIT of the lab report. i try to be patient, as i understand hidden struggles. but i was at the end of my rope. i never snapped, and i always tried to help them, but sometimes i was very frustrated because on thursdays, i have 2 classes (doesn't sound like a lot, but at my school, my lectures are 2-3 hours long, so it's about 5 hours total of lectures) at two different campuses, so i leave at about 7:30am and get home at about 5:30-6:00pm. it's my night to clean the kitchen as well, so my patience is very thin at the end of the day. i never agreed to help them, and they are texting me. i don't know how to tell them "i'm in no mood to help" but it made me so upset to the point that i was saying that next semester, i wouldn't give my number to anyone. i'm not a tutor, and i'm struggling to stay afloat myself in these classes. i don't have all of the answers, and tbh i'm not even confident on most of my answers. i've tried to make this clear, but they still come to me for help. next semester, i'm retaking ANOTHER course that i failed (not failed, but didn't get a high enough mark to move forward) and i honestly feel like a dick for not helping when i could and should help.
this is probably a nonissue tbh. i'm on the verge of dropping out myself because i took on too much this semester and this just kinda feels like it's all more than i can handle.
What are these acronyms?

It was normal with finals coming up that we would become busy; it was a given. Tadashi had his senior final project to finish up and I had an eight-page case report, both due Friday. We were sitting in his lab while Tadashi worked out a couple of kinks in the programming, and I finished up the final draft of my paper.
“Dashi, could you read through this, please? I could check out your programming,” I offered, moving my computer aside as I walked up behind him where he was leaning over the table. I wrapped my arms around his waist and leaned my head against his back. “You could use a break from looking at that.”
"Why don’t we both take a break?” He countered, turning in my arms as he place a small kiss on the crown of my head. He lead his head down against mine as we swayed back and forth as he continued, “It’s only Tuesday. We have time to take the night off. The kinks are pretty worked out, I just need to do a final test, but I think it’s fine. And that’s your final draft, yeah?” I nodded in response. “So why don’t we head out of here?”
“Can we go to that sushi place by the cafe? I’m craving it,” I asked, tilting my head to look up at him as he started laughing quietly. I gasped in mock offense, “Hey, don’t laugh at me!”
“I’m not laughing at you,” He reassured me, unwrapping one of his arms to turn off his computers, desk lamps and grab his keys. He led me out of the lab once I shut down my computer as well and grabbed my backpack, and we walked onto the elevator as he threw his arm over my shoulders, pulling me into his side. “I was gonna suggest that and maybe a night ride around the city.”
“On the moped or Baymax?” I asked, jokingly knowing the answer as we walked off the elevator and out of the building.
“You hate heights, so obviously the moped,” He chuckled as he helped me put my helmet on once we approached the moped.

Day 16 - 90 Day Challenge 🎀
I was still in a lot of pain yesterday (Thursday), it was a very odd pain, but I've woken up today (Friday) and it's finally gone! I'm excited because now I can move around without that uncomfortable feeling. I still didn't do much yesterday but I figured it was worth an update, regardless. That's the point of this challenege. Accountability and consistency.
🏋‍♀️ Physical Health
walked to work (~20 min)
scheduled my gym times for today and next week
found out the gym hours for my campus gym for the first part of winter break so I can schedule in gym time for then too
🧠 Mental Health
made myself get up and out of bed after work to curb how I was feeling (felt kinda numb and decided I needed to do something productive about it)
❤️ Emotional Health
therapy appointment! (may have been my last one until january, thank you gobernment for ending my health insurance coverage today)
was honest with my boyfriend about how I was feeling (was super grateful with how he handled it, hes so patient and understanding and kind to me, I'm so happy with my relationship with this man. I love him, so much)
📚 Intellectual Health
completed the respiratory lab report for my Anatomy lab
made a list of things to accomplish Friday morning (at the study room I booked)
filled in my planner with the rest of the assignment I have due
🏘 Adulting
worked a ~4 hour shift (recieved an actual frozen ham as our christmas gift from work)
cooked spaghetti for dinner for myself (needed comfort food)
cleared my old food out of the fridge
got my work schedule for next week figured out (my last week of work before the break, I could cry because I'm not going to see my work bestie until probably march of next year - she's super pregnant and due in the beginning of January)
filled in my budget for November and realized I spent over my means
deleted shopping apps from my phone
made a tentative lost of some goals for 2024 (might post them! thinking of breaking it down into monthly, quarterly, and yearly stuff)
zoom called my loving boyfriend <3
🥰 Self Love/Care
full morning skincare
full night skincare (I love how my face feels and looks after I oil cleanse)
I actually did a good amount of things yesterday, surprising with how much time I spent in bed not feeling like myself. But today is going to be a good day! My goals for today are to have a decent morning routine, finish and submit my final research study paper for my psyc class, attend the make up lab session for anatomy, attend the lan session for my psyc final exam (that's on monday), go to the gym, and make it through my work shift.
til next time lovelies 🩷

The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science. SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research. The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network. Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor. Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News. He wrote, produced and hosted StarStuff from its inception, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Neilsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth. The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually. However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage. Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently. StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016. Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, tripling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is now published three times a week and is also available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

They are supposed to alternate who floats or is over ratio but they didn’t write down that I had 3 patients on Wednesday and tried to make me take 3 again on Friday 😡 and the charge nurse like didn’t believe it wasn’t my turn, tried to make me go get report and said she’d show me the sheet later so I could see it’s my turn….. took half of report then made her show me and it was SO NOT my turn. I kept telling her “I floated the day before yesterday” and she was like well so and so’s date was may 16, when was yours? THE DAY BEFORE YESTERDAY. So what date was that then she asks? Omg. June 21. The day before yesterday!! Was may the day before yesterday? Finally she took away my third patient (who immediately transferred out) but my night still sucked bc they only gave me one of my old patients back due to it originally being the triple team. And she made me have 2 busy ones all night until 3am, then with no warning give up one to the nurse whose turn it was to have 3 so I could get an admit… like if you own a room all night and transfer out a patient you don’t immediately get a new one in 15 minutes you have an hour or two… I wouldn’t have been spending an hour doing wound care and am lab draws if I knew I was about to get an admit I would’ve charted and taken lunch… then she let me get halfway through giving report then decided she actually wanted me to give up the other patient despite originally saying I could choose. Which joke’s on her bc the other pt was busier. Very irritating night all around, no longer respect that nurse.

Dublin Week 16: Classes Going Crazy
Hi there, it's me, Sam, again. I can't think of a good intro, so I'm just gonna get into it.
I started this week in something of a panic because while I was in Copenhagen, I neglected to do a number of things I should've been doing for the week ahead. He is the complete list of things I should have been doing:
Studying for an applied dynamics quiz on Tuesday
Finishing up research and making a poster due on Wednesday
Studying for a lab exam for statistics on Wednesday
When I got back on Monday night from Copenhagen, I frantically studied for my quiz the next morning, and apparently this was good enough to do reasonably well. Yay me! Then I had to get to doing my research!
This past semester I've been taking a class that gave me the opportunity to conduct research. I'd been working with a PhD student who's studying titanium alloys, and until this point I had worked in the lab a bit and taken some measurements, but we hadn't actually decided what I was going to write my final report and presentation on. After my quiz on Tuesday, we met up, decided what my topic was going to be, and then I the rest of my waking hours finishing my poster. At around 1am, I was done, and frankly I'm pretty proud of my work. Moral of the story: be proactive and figure out what you're researching sooner rather than later. Posters can be made in a day though (not recommended).
Tumblr media
Me and my poster
Wednesday was considerably more chill. I went to my classes and spent my free time preparing for my lab exam. Later that evening I took the exam, and I think it went alright. I should've prepared a bit more, but at the end of the day it was a very small part of my grade, and I'm not too worried. Now that I was done with my work, I got some well deserved rest.
On Thursday, my research class had a big poster presentation in the lobby of the engineering building. I got to show my research to interested passersby, and it felt really great being able to share my experience with them. Afterwards, I didn't have any classes for the day, so I just hung around, made some food, and then went to climbing later that evening.
Friday I once again didn't have any classes, so I spent the day cleaning my apartment, relaxing, and getting ready for the Mountaineering Ball. Most clubs and societies at UCD host a ball at the end of the semester where the club rents a ballroom at a hotel and everyone dresses up nicely and dances and drinks and whatnot. You know, typical ball activities.
Around 5, I met up with some other club members on campus and we made our way to a club members house for some pre-drinks (referred to as prinks here). After spending some time there, everyone made their way to the hotel ballroom the club booked.
At the ball we were served some (surprisingly good) dinner, handed out awards, took photos, and danced. It was a great time. After the ball, a bunch of us headed into town to a pub called Doyle's. It was super crowded and loud, but we all had fun, and I ended up leaving around 3 am (yikes).

The next morning, I wasn't up until about noon. After this slow start, I met up with my friends Colin and Cormac in town, where we grabbed some lunch and tried to walk off our hangovers, which actually kind of worked a little. When we got bored of this and hungry for dinner, we headed back to UCD. Once we refueled and bored ourselves once again in our respective apartments, we decided to meet up again and head down to Dun Laoghaire to enjoy the lovely evening and watch the sunset, which was a lovely way to end the day.
Tumblr media

On Sunday, the mountaineering club had its final Sunday hike of the term. We were supposed to hike Lugnaquilla, which is the highest peak in the Wicklow mountains, but our bus forgot to pick us up, and we ended up getting to the trail about an hour late. Instead we did a much shorter hike, which actually ended up being a great time since the weather was awesome and we were actually able to enjoy it. We ended our hike at a cute little pub where I got my cheapest pint of Guinness of the semester (it was still €4.80). Overall, it was a lovely way to end the Sunday hikes.

Some photos from the hike
That's all for this week! This was the last week of classes, so the next three weeks, I'll just be studying and taking my exams. I'm gonna try to do some exploring of Dublin during this time, so stay tuned for that.

I have a paper due wednesday, a presentation on wednesday, 6 lab reports due friday, a project that’s shaping up to be a doozy due tomorrow, and like 5 video lectures to watch by next monday (though I should really watch them by friday). in addition, I have 2 finals and a project due on monday, and a research paper due next wednesday.
reading has always made me feel better, and reading absolutely batshit stories helps me stay motivated, so crack fanfics do that well. I have resorted to my hero academia (a manga I will never read and an anime I will never watch) crack fics that I somewhat understand due to friends infodumping and telling me their blorbos. I may not respect it as a concept, but a dude with yaoi hands who wears nothing but jeans due to commitment to the bit does in fact make me feel better

Got invited to a new wave party for Friday night and i am STUPID excited!!!!!! I'm a bit stressed tho, as I've got a metric ton of work due this week (9-12 page research paper, lab report AND i have to get this final data analysis project chugging. I am not looking forward to fumbling my way thru Google Earth pro and GIS data) on top of a trip for my lab that evening but GOD.
If i had the time i would be trying so so hard to diy the David Byrne big suit ughhhhhhhhh. Which may absolutely be wishful thinking but regardless. Someday.
It's still gonna be really fun to do all the hair and makeup!!!!!! We'll make it work

quarantine day whatever:
i have just barely managed to not become nocturnal because i have project meetings at 9 am to be awake for
my professor is lecturing on adobe connect, but he's having so many technical difficulties we've all checked out
somehow, that One Kid who always needs to give his 2 cents still manages to derail class for 5 min every time he has a question
professor's talking about gravity-gradient torque while my friends and i are all having a meltdown in discord over how much we have due this week
at this rate i'm def gonna go pass-fail
