i dont think we talk enough about how fucked up it is that gerald was like. shadow's primary caretaker. his grandpappy. and he was so overcome with grief that he fucked up shadow's brain for the rest of forever and completely changed (temporarily) how he saw maria. maria, who he was grieving over in the first place. he really was like "everyone has to suffer because i feel this pain, and i don't care if i have to harm the memory of the person i am grieving to do it since there will be nobody left to remember her anyway". and because of the alien thing being retconned in, we can assume that after shadow blows up earth he's supposed to wait on the ark for his alien dad to show up and take him for cowboy times in space. eating old gross food and consumed with rage and grief all the while. and helping black doom kill and eat planets because his heart withered away with his mind.
