Yk something that lowkey really bugs me? I hate how often when people talk about Steven Universe in terms of LGBTQ rep, there’s always this stupid 'I know, but’ angle to it. Quite frankly, I don’t give a shit about the stuff other people don’t like about its writing (hell, quite frankly there are plenty of things that are arguably better regarded which I find less compelling or worse written). It was a series with not just one or two but literally dozens of queer characters, and told a story about self-acceptance and fighting against bigoted systems of power that spoke to me and a lot of people, one which didn’t pretend prejudice and abuse don’t exist like some shows with LGBTQ rep like to. And it did it before almost any other kid’s shows even touched the subject- you wouldn’t have stuff like She-Ra or TOH without it and their showrunners have basically said as much. It deserves to be treated as the jewel in the crown of Gay Cartoons and not just some also-ran.

Listen, you should never film strangers in public without their consent, but I swear there need to be fines or something for people who do that shit in some spaces. For example: I had to go to the ER last night, and some jerk filmed a woman who just came in and was clearly having an asthma attack. She immediately got to go back, and he was unhappy about that. barring emergency, nobody should be kicking anybody's door in. many of us lived in houses where it was always, somehow, an emergency. there is a strange, almost hysterical calm that comes over you in that moment - everything feels muted, and you almost feel, however incongruently, like you should be laughing. you are living inside of "the emergency." oh my god, you think. i am now a fucking statistic.

Phantom was already a nightmare as it was–one of the most powerful and intelligent ghosts on record. His territorial fights with other ghosts for haunting (hunting) grounds in Amity have made global news several times already. The stress, the lack of sleep, the fighting, no one to turn to, not even his best friends or family–it takes a toll on him. Starving himself doesn't help, but he refuses to do more than take small bites from the ambient life energy and emotion of the living around him. Nothing that won't actually do lasting harm. He begins to slip up more and more, which Sam and Tucker begin to notice but haven't quite connected the dots yet.

Something about how physically small Ellie looks in this episode just makes it all so much more intense. How little she is curled next to Joel, how big the rifle looks when she holds it, the way David is able to pick her up so easily. The contrast in the size of their hands when he's telling her that she, a 14-year-old, is his only equal, and how tiny hers look when she wraps her arms around Joel; the way his coat reaches her knees when he drapes it over her. Every second the camera spends on her is forcing you to look at how young she is and it just makes it all so much more awful.
