I just finished watching Derry Girls and I can honestly say I think it's one of the greatest shows ever. No, fr. The jokes, the sad moments, the songs, the all the wonders of the teen show in the 90s and the overall vibe.. like it's just 20/10. I am literally so amazed. I cried my eyes out at the ending because it was so good and hopeful and happy and amazing and immaculate.

While we’re on the subject of names, is there an explanation for how traditional nicknames came about that are seemingly unrelated to, or have little in common with, the original name?

ie- John/Jack, Richard/Dick, Henry/Harry/Hank, Charles/Chuck, Margaret/Peggy/Daisy, Sarah/Sally, Mary/Molly, Anne/Nan, etc

I am actually over a week into researching a huge follow-up post (probably more than one if I’m being honest) about the history of nickname usage, so I will be going into this in much, much more detail at a hopefully not-so-later date - if I have not lost my mind. (Two days ago I spent three hours chasing down a source lead that turned out to be a typographical error from 1727 that was then quoted in source after source for the next 150 years.)

As a preview though, here’s some info about the names you mentioned:

The origins of a good portion of common English nicknames come down to the simple fact that people really, really like rhyming things. Will 🠞Bill, Rob🠞Bob, Rick🠞Dick, Meg🠞Peg.

It may seem like a weird reason, but how many of you have known an Anna/Hannah-Banana? I exclusively refer to my Mom’s cat as Toes even though her name is Moe (Moesie-Toesies 🠞 Toesies 🠞 Toes).

Jack likely evolved from the use of the Middle English diminutive suffix “-chen” - pronounced (and often spelled) “-kyn” or “kin”. The use of -chen as a diminutive suffix still endures in modern German - as in “liebchen” = sweetheart (lieb “love” + -chen).

John (Jan) 🠞 Jankin 🠞 Jackin 🠞 Jack.

Hank was also originally a nickname for John from the same source. I and J were not distinct letters in English until the 17th Century. “Iankin” would have been nearly indistinguishable in pronunciation from “Hankin” due to H-dropping. It’s believed to have switched over to being a nickname for Henry in early Colonial America due to the English being exposed to the Dutch nickname for Henrik - “Henk”.

Harry is thought to be a remnant of how Henry was pronounced up until the early modern era. The name was introduced to England during the Norman conquest as the French Henri (On-REE). The already muted nasal n was dropped in the English pronunciation. With a lack of standardized spelling, the two names were used interchangeably in records throughout the middle ages. So all the early English King Henrys would have written their name Henry and pronounced it Harry.

Sally and Molly likely developed simply because little kids can’t say R’s or L’s. Mary 🠞 Mawy 🠞 Molly. Sary 🠞 Sawy 🠞 Sally.

Daisy became a nickname for Margaret because in French garden daisies are called marguerites.

Nan for Anne is an example of a very cool linguistic process called rebracketing, where two words that are often said/written together transfer letters/morphemes over time. The English use of “an” instead of “a” before words beginning with vowels is a common cause of rebracketing. For example: the Middle English “an eute” became “a newt”, and “a napron” became “an apron”. In the case of nicknames the use of the archaic possessive “mine” is often the culprit. “Mine Anne” over time became “My Nan” as “mine” fell out of use. Ned and Nell have the same origin.

Oddly enough the word “nickname” is itself a result of rebracketing, from the Middle English “an eke (meaning additional) name”.

I realized earlier this week that my cat (Toe’s sister) also has a rebracketing nickname. Her name is Mina, but I call her Nom Nom - formed by me being very annoying and saying her name a bunch of time in a row - miNAMiNAMiNAM.

Chuck is a very modern (20th century) nickname which I’ll have to get back to you on as I started my research in the 16th century and am only up to the 1810s so far lol.

Family Feud Nominations, Who is the Best Doctor Who Family

If I've missed a character out of one of the families let me know (within reason, I imagine all these families are massive in the EU, so prioritise tv or significant characters)

Currently, the only rule is no families may inculde anyone who is even ambiguously The Doctor, it'll get super complicated super fast imo

Any characters, eg River, who can link up multiple different families to create a single massive family unit will be treated on a case by case basis. If it is possible to pick one of the smaller family units that they are a part of to include them in while not including them in any of the others (in a way everyone will agree at least makes sense) they will be included in that family only, otherwise they will not be included

Warnings: fluff, time jump (Charlie is 5, Ellie is 21, and JJ is 2), talk of deceased loved ones (Anna, Sarah, Jane), Charlie being curious, Ellie being a good mom, Jesse’s alive!!

"Bellie, I have a question," Charlie announces from her place next to Ellie at the dinner table. Joel smiles at the nickname and leans forward to watch his girls interact. 

"I have an answer," Ellie says. 

"Why do you call mommy and daddy by their grown-up names?" She asks, and the table freezes. You knew this question would come up eventually, but you didn't think it would hit you as a rapid-fire question from your five-year-old.

"You know how sometimes we talk about how you lived in my belly, and JJ lived in Auntie Dina's belly? Well, Ellie didn't live in my belly. She lived in someone else's belly." You explain. Charlie nods as she listens and looks between you and Ellie. 

"Who?"

"A very nice lady named Anna." 

"Anna," Charlie tries the name on her tongue. "Anna is Ellie's mama?"

"Yep."

"Why doesn't Anna live with us?" She asks, her eyes full of curiosity. You look to Ellie, unsure of how much of her story you're allowed to tell. Ellie puts her fork down and folds her hands together.

"Do you remember how we talked about Sarah and Jane?" Ellie asks, and Charlie nods. "Do you remember how we talked about the tattoo Cat did for me?" Again, Charlie nods, before reaching out to trace the ink on Ellie’s forearm with her little fingers. "Well, my mommy got hurt in the same way I got hurt when I was little, but my mommy got really sick, and she died."

"That's sad." Charlie frowns. 

"It is, but she made sure I was safe. When I got hurt, your mommy and daddy found me and brought me all the way here to Jackson to get medicine. Then, they got married, and then they had…" Ellie trails off and points to Charlie for dramatic effect.

"Me!" Charlie yells, and she laughs.

"Yeah, that's right. So, even though my mommy died, I was okay."

"Because my mommy and daddy were your mommy and daddy for a little bit?" She asks, and Ellie takes a deep breath, looking at you and Joel. 

"Yeah. Yeah, they were. That's why we're sisters."

"Do you remember…" Charlie trails off, scowling as she searches her brain. 

"Anna?" Joel supplies, and Charlie lights up.

"Yeah! Anna! Do you remember your Anna mommy?" She asks, crawling into Ellie's lap to play with her bracelets. Ellie takes it in stride, tucking Charlie's hair behind her ears. 

"No, I don't remember my Anna mommy, but I know she was funny and kind and a badass just like me," Ellie says. You don't have the heart to correct her swearing, especially in such a sweet moment with Charlie. You just sit and watch.

"So, you call mommy and daddy by their grown-up names because you have an Anna mommy in Heaven just like I have Sarah and Jane sissies in Heaven?"

"Mhm."

"Does your Anna mommy take care of my Sarah and Jane sissies?"

"I hope so." Ellie hums as she wipes crumbs from Charlie’s shirt.

"Oh," Charlie says. "When are Auntie Dina and Uncle Jesse gonna come over with JJ?" She transitions seamlessly, and you laugh. The mind of a five-year-old will forever be an elusive one. You get through the rest of your family dinner without a hitch, although you have to admit that you miss Dina, Jesse, and JJ, too. 

It's hard to get everyone together, especially with Ellie splitting her time between her own little family and us. Every Friday, the motley crew of parents switches off where they go for dinner. Some Fridays, JJ, Dina, Ellie, and Jesse go to Dina's mom's house. Some Fridays, they all go to Jesse's parent's house before finally coming to yours and Joel's. It's pretty complicated, but they have a system. The other three couldn't come this time because Jesse unexpectedly got assigned a patrol shift, JJ got the flu, and Dina didn't want to risk giving it to Charlie. But Charlie practically begged to see her sister, so she made the solo journey out. 

Once you're done with dinner, Joel gets Charlie ready for bed while you and Ellie do the dishes together. You didn't ask her to, nor do you expect her to when she comes over, but she always takes a place next to you at the sink. She tells you about JJ's birthday party coming up and how difficult it's been trying to find a time that fits all sides of the family. You tell her about how Charlie's doing at school and how she's taken a particular interest in music, one you're sure was influenced by Ellie and Joel. 

"I'm sorry for what Charlie asked about at dinner. I had no idea." You say as you walk with Ellie towards the front door once the dishes are all dry and put away. She waves you off.

"No, it's okay. She's smart. I didn't realize how much she understood," she says, and you nod, tucking your hands into your back pockets. "She has a point, though."

"About what?" 

"Maybe… I should start calling you and Joel my parents. At least until she's old enough to know the whole story. Same thing with JJ. I mean, he already asks for Grandpa Joel." She explains hesitantly, wringing her hands as she talks. You smile at the nervous habit and take a deep breath, processing her request.

"I'd really like that," you say, and she smiles back. "But do I have to be Grandma? I mean, I'm old but not that old." 

"No. I'm sure Jay will come up with a cool, non-old name for you. Plus, he's already got Dina and Jesse's moms," she says, furrowing her eyebrows as she thinks. "And two moms and a dad. And an aunt that's really not that much older than him. Oh, god," she scrubs a hand down her face, and you laugh. "I'm going to have to explain so much to him."

"Welcome to the club," you grab her jacket off the hook and hand it to her. "You're a really good mom. I hope you know." You say, and Ellie blushes as she pulls the jacket over her shoulders. 

"I've learned from the best." She says, and your heart feels like it could burst. You pull her close and hug her tightly like you always do when she gets ready to leave. You never thought you'd miss the days when she was just down the hallway, playing guitar loudly or gossiping with Dina in the late hours of the night. You kiss her temple and squeeze her. 

"I love you, kiddo."

"I love you, too, Mom."

The first rays of morning sun are just peeking into the living room where Ellie sits cross-legged on the floor, entertaining the household’s happiest early riser. Anna, recently fed and changed, has been whisked downstairs to give her mother a rest.

Ellie should be asleep right now, too, curled up in her bed in the garage, but sometimes the nightmares come back with a vengeance. The baby’s solid weight in her lap is a comfort.

“Good thing you’re cute, kid,” she signs as she speaks, interrupting the movement of her hands to cover a yawn.

Joel, up for an early patrol shift with Tommy, is making coffee in the kitchen, one good ear trained on his daughters’ one-sided conversation, soothed by the sounds of Ellie’s voice and Anna’s occasional coo.

When the coffee is done, he settles into the armchair across the room and waits for the caffeine to kick in. 

Ellie gently sets Anna down on the floor. The baby frowns immediately and turns with a soft whine of protest, reaching for her sister, rocking back and forth as she tries to get back into Ellie’s lap.

“So clingy,” she sighs, picking the baby up and plopping her back down on her legs.

“She’ll be crawlin’ any day now,” Joel says, sipping at his mug.

“You think?” Ellie looks up at him, then back at her sister with wonder. “Just think of the trouble you’ll get up to then, little crotch goblin.”

Anna giggles and pats Ellie’s mouth to feel the air of her sister’s words. A bubble of drool pops at the corner of her tiny bowed lips and Ellie wipes it away with her sleeve.

Joel winces, surveying the room with fresh eyes. He sees every sharp corner, every hard surface, every uncovered outlet. He’d forgotten about this part. They really need to start baby-proofing.

After a thought, Ellie stands and places Anna on her favorite blanket a few feet away. She steps back and sits down, then makes the sign for come here .

Anna leans forward on her hands but doesn’t make a move to go further. Instead, she finds a tassel on the blanket and grabs at it, trying to grasp it in her chubby fingers to pull it into her mouth.

“C’mon, bug,” Ellie beckons, tapping the floor to get her sister’s attention, then signing and speaking at the same time. “You can do it, kiddo.”

Joel watches, lips quirked in a smile, as Ellie continues to encourage her sister to cross the distance without much luck. After a while, he eases himself down onto the floor, setting his mug on the coffee table.

“Lemme try.”

“Think you can do better, old man?”

He shrugs. He’s pretty sure Ellie is the favorite, but he won’t tell her that.

“Tell you what,” Ellie says. “She comes to me first, you have to take my stable mucking rotation for a month.”

Joel snorts. “Yeah? And what do I get if she comes to me?”

“I’ll…do the dishes for a month.”

He shakes his head. “No deal. You’ll just eat at the caf.”

“Ugh, fine, I’ll…I’ll take diaper duty whenever you ask. No whining.”

“S’a deal.”

Ellie hesitates. “You agreed to that way too fast, dude…”

“She’s on solids now,” he grins. “An’ I have a good feelin’ about this.”

“Oh, gross. Asshole.”

He ignores this and reaches out for his youngest daughter. “C’mere, li’l bug. Show us what ya got.”

Anna looks back and forth between her father and sister and flashes a gummy grin, pleased to find two of her favorite people at her level. She rocks forward, makes a soft, happy noise, and doesn’t move further.

Joel grabs the TV remote off the couch, forbidden fruit, and taps it on the floor to get her attention.

“C’mon, baby girl. You know you wanna play with this.”

“Hey, no fair, dude,” Ellie protests. “That thing is like baby crack.”

“Never said we were playin’ fair, kid.”

Ellie groans and looks around, finding a stuffed giraffe in the basket of baby toys. She holds it out with one hand and makes the sign for giraffe with the other. Anna coos and grins, waving her arms in recognition…but she doesn’t budge.

They go back and forth, each trying to tempt the baby, neither having much success, although Anna remains enraptured by the attention.

Just when Joel thinks he’s got it–Anna is on hands and knees and pointing in his direction–Charlie’s sleepy voice carries from the stairs.

“Are you playing fetch with the baby?”

Joel and Ellie exchange a look.

“She’s not a dog you guys,” Charlie sighs, stepping between them and reaching down to pick Anna up. 

“Hold on,” Joel says, stopping her with a hand to the side of her thigh. “She almost had it. She was comin’ to me.”

Ellie scoffs, “Yeah right, dude. You were about to owe me a month's worth of stable duty.”

“Joel,” Charlie says slowly. “Are you betting on our kid?”

“No!” he protests, then relents. “Maybe a little, but we’re just encouragin’ her.”

“Right,” she scoffs. She frowns, then backs up a few feet and kneels, signing, “Anna, come to Mama.”

“That ain’t right,” Joel grumbles. “Smart girl knows where her food comes from.”

Charlie shoots him a look and quotes him verbatim, mimicking his drawl.

“‘Never said we were playin’ fair.’”

“Hey, you have to make a wager if you want in,” Ellie says. “I have diapers and Joel has stables.”

“And I pushed her out of my vagina,” Charlie says dryly. “I’m exempt from extra chores.”

Ellie grimaces and fakes a gag, but doesn’t argue.

Pleased to be the literal center of attention, the baby bounces on her diapered bottom, makes a raspberry with her lips, and rocks forward on her hands again. A thread of drool escapes her chin and drops to the blanket, and she zeroes in on it, oblivious to the competition around her.

Soon the three of them have exhausted an arsenal of toys and trinkets in their efforts, and Anna is starting to lose interest. They’re so caught up in the little game that they barely register the front door opening, the thud of boots on the living room floor. The vibrations capture Anna’s attention, though, and she turns to find her Uncle Tommy frowning down at them in confusion.

“The hell–?”

They’re settled in a perfect triangle with baby Anna at the center, failed temptations scattered in a loose circle around them, like they’ve performed some kind of sacred ritual and summoned a baby in the process.

Anna gives a little burble of delight and takes off, scooting across the floor on hands and knees like she’s been doing it her whole life. She bypasses Ellie and Joel and reaches her uncle before the rest of her stunned family can utter a word.

One chubby hand reaches out to pat Tommy’s boot, and she looks up at him with big, gray eyes. He bends down to pluck her off the floor.

“Ain’t that a fun new trick,” he smiles as she smacks his cheeks in her tiny hands and blows a raspberry in his face. “When’d you learn to crawl, li’l bug?”

Today we visit two households of the Monk family.

In the first lot live the elders. They gave away their earthly possessions and live a live of members of a parish guild. Recently they returned from their mission in the Far East.

Old Sarah is David's wife and Faustyna's mother. Her personality is 5/7/8/3/3 and her aspiration is family, even though she'll never have a grandchild - her only child is a nun.

Jan is Julia's husband and father of Francesco. His personality is 2/8/2/6/7. Just like Sarah, his aspiration is family, however chances of having a grandchild are slim - his only son is a monk.

David is Sarah's husband and Faustyna's father. His personality is 4/10/4/4/3 and aspiration is family.

Julia is Jan's wife and Francesco's mother. Her personality is 5/6/3/8/3. Despite her personality being pleasure, she lives a pious live.

Their children - Faustyna and Francesco - live in a monastery and run an orphanage.

There's a rumour of ginormous treasures hidden in the monestery's basement.

Faustyna is a daughter of Old Sarah and David. She's a friend of Julia Kajet. Her personality is 9/2/6/3/5. She is charismatic (6 points) and logical (7 points). Her aspiration is knowledge.

Francesco is Jan and Julia's son. He's friends with Benedict Bigfoot. His personality is 5/5/5/5/5 (the blandest man to ever live 😉). He is charismatic (9), which is quite useful for preaching sermons. His aspiration is knowledge.

Aside from their service to the Watcher, they take care of poor children. At first they hosted Brother and Sister Beggar during colder days, but let them live again with their mother when it got warmer. Soon they realised their mistake as Brother became a common thief and Sister is working hard to support her family. They wanted to take them once more, but Brother and Sister refused as they were not children anymore.

Monks decided not to repeat their mistake with Brother and Sister's siblings and took five kids to the monastery to offer them a chance at better live. They are not cruel - children are allowed to meet with their parents, be in at their mother's place or in the monastery.

The children were baptised and given proper names - earlier they had been named a various variations of "little girl" and "little boy".

Margaret (the blonde girl) is the eldest of the children living in the monastery. She is a daughter of Wench Beggar and Caligula Claudius. She is a record setter when it comes to the number of siblings: she's got 6 half-sibling from her mother's side and 10 half-siblings from her father's side. She is friends with Arthur Magic, her half-brother, and with Anna Bona Darius, her cousin (the relationship between the girls is one of many excuses for Władysław's dislike for his daughter). Of course, Margaret is not aware of the blood bonds she shares with her friends. Her personality is 10/7/4/5/9, artistic, heavy sleeper.

Maria (held by Francesco) is a daughter of Wench Beggar and Blind-Eye Beggar, and one of quadruplets (yes, quadruplets! This neighbourhood has so many multiple births. Too many. 😅). Her personality is 2/7/4/7/6.

Magdalena (sitting next to Francesco) is a daughter of Wench Beggar and Blind-Eye Beggar. Her personality is 4/8/10/5/6.

Michael (sitting next to Margaret) is a son of Wench Beggar and Blind-Eye Beggar. His personality is 1/8/6/8/10.

Kitty nearly start her freshmen year of highschool late and with a Reputation because she had too take summer classes because she got suspended from her middle school after she-with Zero Hesitation-shoved an older Kook girl (Sarah and Kie’s age group) into a bonfire after overheard the older girl say that Kie was a ‘Pogue Slut’.

Which Kitty took offense to for the insult to her older sister.

Afterwards, Kitty lied and said she bumped into the older girl by accident and cried Really Hard. 

And really, who the fuck is gonna believe a 12 year old girl from the respected Carrera family deliberately tried to burn someone???

"Honey"

"No mum"

"Hand it over" you have your hands up in a defence pose, sowly holding one out towards you youngest daughter. SHe shakes her head

"Mumy no"

"Lydia. Please just give me the spoon" she giggles, licking the end of the spoon. Smiling as the chocolate icing hits her tongue. SHe giggles as you smile, tackling her and tickling her "Thats it little miss"

"Mummy no!" she squeals as you tickle her, wrestling the spoon from her hand and placing it on the side. You pick her up. Body facing away from you as you hold her. Arms wrapped around her as you move. Going into the living room. Anna looks at you, going over she smiles at her younger sister

"We have a prisoner Detective Anna. The Infamous 'spoon theif'"

"The crime?" she stands up, coming over and placing her hands behind her back.

"STealing spoons used halfway through cooking some food and eating from the utensul"

"Hmm. You know what the punishment for that is, correct?" she smiles. Grabbing her sisters feet and tickling the soles of them "Tickle torture" more enjoayble squealing

"Mummy!" she squeals. Wriggling in your grip and kicking. A grin accross her face.

"Ok" you say, Anna stopping her torment "I think shes learnt her lesson" she nods, putting her down she folds her arms. Glaring at you both as an unaplogetic smile is plastered on her face.

"Youre both horrible to me"

"Hey you knew what the penalty was for theiving food before its ready" you smile "Im going to go continue cooking. STay in here ok? Both of you" they both nod, slight evil grins on both their faces. You turn around, playfully looking over your shoulder as you go t the kitchen. Continuing decorate the cupcake you were icing. Using a fresh and unlicked spoon however. You place the cake into the container. Pushing it to the far back of the counter. Going back into the living room with your hands behind you back. You see the two girls sitting on the floor. Both of which seem to be colouring.

"I made the cakes. Now they're for tomorrow so please dont have them before we go to the party ok?"

"Ok mum" you smile "thankfully for you" you pull out the two cupcakes from behind your back "I made a couple of extra. Just for quality control" they both smile. You hand one to each of them as they unwrap and eat their sweet treats.

"The rest are for tomorror. Got it?" they both nod, grinning with mouthfuls of cake causing you to chuckle.

Th rest of the day goes by as normal. Doing the chores, putting the kids to bed, having a shower, going to bed, getting up in the morning, heading to the party. It was one of Anna's friends birthday. You were quite friendly with the mum so she had asked you for some help with the food. You were on cupcakes. You drive up, parking outside her house.

Yu go inside. Your oldest going and playing with her friends. Your youngest clinging to your leg as the mum of the birthday boy comes in. She hugs you in greeting "Rose! Im so glad you coul make it"

"Sarah its nice seein you" she smiles, moving away and taking the cakes from you. Placing them on the counter with the other stuff. She smiles and crouches down

"Yo must be Lydia" she says, smiling as she nods. Hiding her face into your leg as you both let out a soft chuckle. SHe stands up, smiling at you "Come on. Let me introduce you to the other parents" she smiles. Motioning for you to follow her as she leads you to her garden. She introduces you to two couples. Going to introduce you to the next couole she gets distracted

"Honey no- Im sorry Ive got to- honey please dont eat that. Thats not edible" she runs over to one of the kids. The two couples laugh slightly

"SO wheres yur husband?" you shake your head "Wife?"

"No. Im not married"

"Oh..." the look they give you. One of disgust. Just as your phone tings. You take it out of your pocket. A new message from Dean. Just one asking how you and the girls are. But it gives you an idea.

'Meet me at this address. Come alone. I'll explain when you get here'.

You smile at the couples as they judge you. Saying to Lydia to go and grab some cake. Just as your phone dinged again

'Be there in 20'

"Sorry I need to go and talk to Sarah for a second" you say to the couples as they nod. Watching as you walk away. You hear scoffing behind you. "Hey Sarah" you smile as you find her in the kitchen "Im so sorry. I didnt think he'd be able to come but he just texted me saying that hes gotten off of work early and he can come to this party and I didnt think youd mind bu-"

"Woah slow down Rose. WHos he?"

"My boyfriend. Sorry I thought Id told you" you smile at her as she shakes her head

"Hes coming here?" you nod "Oh my god. I get to meet one of your partners. They normally only last a week so this is pretty big news. WHat did you say his name was again?"

"Dean" she nods. Grabbing a pen you snatch it from her hand "Do not write it down. ANd please act semi normal when you meet him. Please? Dont want to scare him off" she nods, hugging you tightly

"Im so happy for ypu" you chuckle slightly, patting her back before she moves away "you deserve this Rose. You deserve to be loved"

"Ok thats enough of that sappy shit. Come on" she smiles, letting out a small squeal before putting on a straight face. Nodding as she heads back to her party. You go and stand in the doorway to the garden. Watching one of your kids eating her way through the varius cakes. The other pkaying some sort of balloon game with her friends.

You jump as you hear a knock at the front door. Going and answering it. Dean looks at you. Panic in his eyes as he looks at you. "Are you ok? Where are the girls?" he takes your shoulders, checking you over to make sure you have no injuries.

"Im ok" you take his face between your two gabds. Making him look at you as his hands automaticly go to your waist. "Me and the girls are fine. Completely"

"Then why am I here?" you move away from him sligthly, rubbing one of your arms as you look down

"So there were these people and they were just... disgusted almost by the fact that I was a single mum. And you texted me so I got an idea and I thought that if you're free you wouldnt mind pretending to be my boyfriend to prove those bitchy parents wrong. I know I shouldve rang you to explain or sent a less criptic message but I was annoyed and I just didnt want to be judged by my friends posh friends. Or not judged that much anyway" he nods slightly, looking down as a soft chuckle leaves his lips

"I thought that you and the girls had been captured. Were being horrifically totruted. So Im glad that it turns out to be that you just wanted a date to the prom" you smile, bringing your hands up near you face.

"Youre going to stay?"

"Do I get to eat the free food?" you nod "The I'll stay" you suqeal, hugging him tightly.

"Thank you so much" you kiss his cheek.

You update him on his back story as you link arms with him. Heading to the garden. Anna runs over to you. Grinning as she hugs you. Lydia closely following behind. Gripping her older sisters sleeve.

"I dont mean to brag but me and Lydia did pretty good in the treausre hunt" she holds up a goodie bag filled with sweets and chocolate

"Oh wow you did do well"

"Lydia got shy about doing the hunt on her own so I told her we can share when we get back"

"Thats very kind of you" you smile as she nods, looking around at the other kids still finding stuff

"It meant I had a good excuse to pick up twice the amount of candy" she turns and grins at you again. Looking at Dean she smiles at him "I didnt realise you were coming to this party" he nods

"You're mum asked me to come for emotional support" she nods slightly. Lydia pulls Annas sleave. She looks at her younger sister. Following her poitned finger. Nodding

"We're gping over to the bouncy castle, ok?" you nod, smiling as you watch them go over

"I swear they get bigger everytime I see them" you smile, folding your arms slightly as you watch them "you've done very well at raising them. They've both turned out to be quite lovely young ladies"

"Well I dont know about that. I walked in on Lydia eating an entire jar of peanut butter not to long ago" he laughs as you smile, facing him as you watch the sides of his eyes crinkle from laughing.

"That wasnt a comment I was expecting. Not going to lie" you chuckle slightly "Seriously though. Ive seen people whove been through less shit then you and those girls have had to deal with. ANd they turn out to be real dickbags. The fact that you three are genuinly kind human beings. Id take that as a win" you nod, smiling at his words

"Thanks Dean" he smiles

"No problem Kat" he looks around. Seeing the buffet table "Iim hungry. Lets go get some grub right?" he points over to it, walking over to it you follow him in his stride. Grabbing a plate his fingers do an almost dance before he starts piling the food onto it. You grab one of the small sandwches and strt eating it. Turning as you watch your kids.

You feel a hand on your shoulder. Making you jump. You clutch at your heart as you see Sarah standing next to you. Chuckling as you lean over slightly "jesus christ dont do that".

"Sorry love. I was just wondering where your new fella was" You nod, turning to look at the green eyed man next to you. Who curretnly has what appears to be some sort of savoury food in his mouth. You look at the ground and let out a small chuckle

"Honey" you gently touch his arm. He turns to face you. Covering his mouth slightly as he looks at you, then Sarah "this is my boyfriend, Dean. Dean, this is my friend Sarah" he smiles at her. Swallowing his food before speaking

"Nice to meet you" he motions at the food on the table "this is delicious by the way" she smiles

"Thank you. I made most of it myself" he nods, eating some more of the food. She asks the typical questions. How did you first meet? How long you've been together? What proffesion does he have? Thankfully you both stuck to relatively the truth. Met 10 years ago as you had some informatoin about a case he was working on. Been friends since then. About two months agp you got up the courage and asked him out on a date. It went well and youve been together since.

As youve fnished answering all the questions Lydia runs over to you. Tears in her eyes. You kneel down. "Sweetie whats wrong?" she holds up her pinkie finger. Sniffing slightly as you see a small cut on the end. "Oh baby" you take her hand between yours. Kissing her fingers. "Is that better?" she nods slightly, hugging you. You wrap your arms around her before letting her go. STanding up as Sarah smiles at her

"Do you want me to go get you a plaster?" she nods, giggling slightly as she hides in your leg. SHe smiles "shall we go get you one?" she holds her hand out. SHe shyly takes her hand. Her smile goes to you and Dean "It was lovely meeting you" he nods and meets her smile with his own

"It was nice meeting you too" she smiles, walking out to the kitchen. He turns to you slightly, whispering at you as he continues to have a smile on his face. "That was the most terrifying interigation I've ever had" you laugh, covering your kuth as Lydia runs back out. SHe holds her hand up to you. You smile. Taking her hand as you admire the plaster.

"Its got a unicorn on it" she says to you as you nod, smiling

"Id say its a plaster truly worthy for a princess" she giggles. Running off to contunue playing. You and Dean chat whilst the partyt continues. The occasional parents comes over and chats to you both. Then its time for you to leave. Its a Sunday so the guests leave early. Wnating to get ready for work and school the next day. You go outside. Dean following shortly behind you as you help your kids into the car. Doing up Lydias seat belt. Double checking Anna has hers put on as she suts in the front. You shut the front door, turning to Dean.

"You are welcome to come back to mine if you'd like. I imagine you want to get back to your brother though" he smiles at you, putting his gaze onto the two kids in the car before looking at you again

"I should go back to Sam. I kind of left ubruplty. I dont want him to worry about me" you nod, hugging him as you wrap your arms around his neck. You feel his arms go around your waist, his head going into your shoulder. You stay like this for a few moments before he kisses the top of your head before moving away from the hug. He looks through the open window of the car "it was lovely seeing you girls again" Lydia waves enthusiasticly to him as Anna turns to face him

"It was nice seeing you Dean" he nods and smiles, putting his fist out for a fist bump. Anna chuckles. Meeting his fist bump. Causing him to smile as he waves at Lydia.

"Bye" he whisper speaks to you before heading to his car. You get in the drivers seat. Waving as Dean drives past you. Anna watching the both of you as you smile at each other.

The next day, I'm taking a bath to help me relax, then I get out and join Rafe on the porch where he's smoking. I sit down next to him silently and lean my head on his shoulder.

"Look, uh, I invited Wheezie over, she's just coming to drop something off, alright?" He says to me, wrapping his arm around me and rubbing my shoulder.

"Yeah, of course." I smile softly.

"Uhm... full disclosure she's bringing me some cash, I just need it to pay Barry and then I'll almost have fully paid him and I'll have my shit back together and dad will let me come back home because I'm gonna fully quit, like I'm actually done. I need to put you first now. I'm getting it together." Rafe rambles off and I nod.

"If you need money you can ask me, you don't have to ask your little sister," I tell him and he starts shaking his head before I'm even done talking.

"No, no. I'm not doing that."

"Rafe, it's fine, seriously. I don't work three jobs for nothing. Let me help you." I smile softly. "You're always here for me, I need you to know I will do the same for you."

"Yeah, I know you would, but you shouldn't have to. The thing is, Wheezie can get that money back from my dad if she just asks. He loves her, I'm on my own though." I nod slightly and look up as the patio door cracks open. Rafe reaches down and quickly puts his bong under the table.

"Uh, sorry.." He says to her.

"Hi, Wheezie." I smile, giving her a slight wave.

"Hey Snowy." She smiles, walking over and putting her bag on a chair next to us before leaning on the railing.

"Uh, so, you want some? Or..." Rafe offers and I laugh, hitting him lightly on the arm.

"Did you legitimately just offer me drugs? I'm thirteen." Wheezie says, raising her eyebrow at him.

"Uhh..." Rafe says, rubbing the back of his neck.

"How are you, Wheezie?" I ask her, deciding to move on from this conversation.

"I've been better. How did you get the Glisson's to let you stay here?"

"I didn't- they're out of town for the summer. Don't tell anyone." Rafe tells her and I look over at him, shocked.

"Not unless you let me stay here whenever I want." Wheezie says, sitting down on the chair next to us.

"Yeah, sure." Rafe nods. "Why, trouble in paradise?"

"No, I'm just officially dad's least favourite daughter."

"What happened?" Rafe asks her.

"Dad's taking Sarah to the Bahamas, and did they ask me if I wanted to come? No." She sighs, and I look over at Rafe, my thoughts running a thousand miles per minute. The gold. He has to be moving the gold, and taking Sarah with him to keep her away from us.

"What? They're going to the Bahama house? In the summer?" Rafe asks her and she nods.

"They said it's some business thing." She sighs, leaning on her hand.

Rafe gets up quickly, running his hand through his hair before extending his arm out. "I, I- I know like, a million times more about the business stuff than Sarah does, that doesn't even make sense."

Wheezie shrugs. "We're the black sheep of the family. That's why." She digs into her bag pulling out a hand full of cash and holding it out to Rafe.

"Here, my life savings." Wheezie says, handing the money to Rafe who fumbles and drops it all on the floor.

"I promise I'll pay you back, okay?" He says as he picks it up.

"Yeah, whenever." She sighs.

"Thank you, Wheezie." I tell her, smiling sadly. I feel so bad for her, I see the twins in her right now. I know Rafe cares about her a lot, and I couldn't imagine being in such a spot where I'd have to ask Anna or Declan for money. I miss them.

Rafe sits back down next to me. "I'm gonna get my shit together, okay? I'm gonna get it like- like tight. You'll see." He says, hitting the cushion next to him with his fist.

Wheezie leaves, and I'm already plotting what my next move is. Do I tell my friends? I definitely should, but I'm not totally sure if I'm right.

"Why do you think they're going to the Bahamas?" I ask my boyfriend. "Sarah didn't tell me she planned on going."

Rafe shrugs, clearly still frustrated. "I don't know, Snowy. The Bahama house is way too hot in the summer for just a vacation. I still- I don't get why he's not taking me if it's business stuff."

"Why not see if you can go?" I suggest stupidly, and Rafe shakes his head.

"If he wanted me there he would have asked. I'm better off here anyways."

I nod a little, diving head first back into my thoughts.

"Hey, in the morning can you drop me at the chat? I have to work and I want to have my car." I lie, and Rafe looks at me, confused.

"I thought it was at Tannyhill?"

"Oh! Right, yeah. It's all good, my work clothes are at John B's anyways so... I'll get changed and take the Pogue instead, I'm working at Heyward's tomorrow." I try to explain, and he accepts this. I think.

The following morning, I'm wearing some of Rafe's pyjamas when he drops me off at home. I give him a quick kiss and a wave goodbye, but both of our minds seem like they're elsewhere. Mine is, for sure. I walk up to the house, and quickly get changed. When I see peek out the window and see his truck gone, I run out onto the dock through the back, where I see everyone but Pope already there.

"Guys- guys." I say and they all look my way. "Have you heard from Sarah? Ward is taking her to the Bahama's on 'business'." I say, using finger quotations.

They look around at each other. "We haven't, but who cares?" JJ says.

"Guys!" We hear someone yell, feet hitting the dock as they spring down towards us. It's Pope, dressed to the nines. His interview- I completely forgot.

"Hey." He says, leaning his hands on his knees as he's breathing heavily.  "I ran all the way here."

"I can see that." Kie says, raising her eyebrow at him.

"John B. I'm sorry about the gold, man." He says, looking at the boy who's laying on the dock, his cast laying next to him.

"All good." He shrugs.

"How was your interview?" I ask him.

"Shit. I bailed halfway through- but only because I have information that is tactically relevant." He says, looking around at all of us.

"My dad couldn't stay with me because he is being paid to go clear out and extend the runway for the Cameron's big plane, because it's too heavy."

"Okay, yeah, Snowy said Ward and Sarah are going to the Bahamas." John B replies.

"Yes, but why would you need to extend a runway for a plane that is much, much heavier than normal?" Pope says, waiting for us to get what he's saying.

"The gold. I knew this was about the gold!" I exclaim, jumping up and down excitedly.

"We have a chance still, guys!" JJ smiles, hugging me. "John B, what do you say?" He says, turning to his friend.

"Alright. Let's go steal that shit back."

We quickly all pile into the Twinkie and speed to the airport, with absolutely zero plan. We park in a wooded area next to a fence with a straight view of the runway, and get out some binoculars that John B keeps in the car. Why? Not a clue.

We're all taking turns watching them load up the plane with this heavy looking cases.

"No way that's not the gold." JJ says, just as John B takes the binoculars from him to look.

He stays silent for a moment. "Shit." He grumbles, adjusting the settings to see better.

"What?" Pope asks. "Tell us."

"It's Sarah." He says, and we all squint to try and get a better look on our own.

"They're fighting..." John B adds, and we watch as the trucks carrying the gold pull away.

"He- he's hurting her." John B says, holding the binoculars up to Kie's chest for her to take them. As she looks and we watch as they get in and start the plane, we hear the Twinkie start out of nowhere, and when we all turn John B is behind the wheel, almost unrecognizable because of how upset he is.

"Woah, wait, John B? What are you doing?" Kie and I yell.

He guns it towards where we are standing by the fence, and I can kind of hear him yelling at us to move. JJ wraps his arms around me and pulls me out of the way, and I fall right on top of him, breathing heavily.

"Holy shit." I say through my breaths, and we just stare at each other for a second before scrambling to get up and look down at the runway.

"Guys, guys what do we do?" Kie says as we watch John B speed down the runway next to the plane.

None of us know what to say.

John B speeds up, passing the plane and skidding to stop horizontally in front of it- I didn't even know the Twinkie could go that fast. We watch in horror as the plane speeds towards him, and I turn and bury my face in JJ's chest as we expect to hear the impact. But we don't.

We all slowly open our eyes again, straining to see what's going on as John B jumps out of the car and to the passengers side of the plane.

"I don't know what to do." Pope says as we all try and get a better view at what's happening. Just then, we hear sirens and look down the runway to where the plane came from, seeing a police SUV speeding towards them.

"We've got to get out of here." Kie says, looking at us.

"I can't get arrested." Pope says and JJ nods in agreement.

"Yeah I'm on probation." He says.

"Okay, we're no help behind bars so let's get out of here." Kie says, but my eyes are trained on the Cameron's truck that's now also speeding towards the scene.

"Snowy- hey, we have to go." JJ says, pulling lightly on my arm.

"That's Rafe." I hear myself mumble, earning a confused 'what?' from the boy next to me. I get a horrible gut feeling, and before I know it I feel my feet hitting the grass as I run across the field towards the plane.

"Snowy!" I hear my friends yelling for me to come back, but I know I can't stop. As I get closer, I see Rafe getting out of his truck, holding something in his hand. It's a second before I realize it's a gun.

"Rafe!" I shout at him, but he can't hear me.

Thinking about the final scene of the special again, but specifically in comparison to the end of the very first episode. Because that also ended with the five mains, Mary, Sarah, Gerry, Joe, Anna, Dierdre and one of Clare's parents all gathered in one place for one purpose, too.

But, in the first episode, nobody wanted to be there. They were there because the gang fucked up their detention so badly they looked guilty of killing someone. And now, they're there by choice, making one of the most important political decisions they may ever face. Before, the gang were children to be dealt with and talked over and blamed. Now, they're young adults, their voices heard, their right to speak up finally being taken seriously.

And none of them are the same, either. Erin isn't a brash, showy kid desperate to grow up, frantically writing down everything, however inane, frantically chasing boys who don't care about her. She's a young woman who, after saying one of her most profound speeches, says she'll maybe write it down, who's found someone willing to take his time, who'll challenge her to improve without compelling her to change.

James isn't that confused fish out of water that stepped off the bus, reeling from being dropped into Derry by his mother. He's grown more confident, learned to take things in stride, and grown secure enough in the Irish side of his identity that he feels like he can vote in the Referendum, like he's not just the wee English fella anymore, and he's allowed a say in what happens to the place he calls home.

Clare's no longer the anxious, closeted girl who doesn't want to be an individual on her own. She's out and proud, and, as it turns out, every bit as capable of causing mischief as any of the others under the right circumstances.

And that's not even getting to the adults. Mary's not an overworked stay at home mother anymore, she's a student pursuing an exciting new academic journey. Gerry's become more assertive, especially with Joe. Joe has watched his granddaughters grow, and has proven he's as dedicated to their happiness as he is to that of his daughters time and again, and has shown that for all he's an old man, he's no less open to ideas and accepting of others (just maybe not Gerry, but that seems almost out of habit at this point).

We know now that Dierdre isn't just Michelle's mum- she's the former punk that Michelle got her wild streak from, sure, but she's also the mother of one of the prisoners facing release if the nation votes yes. She's got more skin in this game than most of the other adults we see voting, with far more to consider in this scene than just how best to tell her nephew his mother's ran off without him. And, of course, the biggest change to the adults present in this scene- Geraldine is here instead of Sean. This is another moment he wasn't here to see, to be part of.

And I feel like I can’t make a post about the changes from the start of the show to the end, without mentioning wee Anna. When the show started, she was a baby, being carried around by Joe and her parents. And now she's a little girl, standing on her own two feet, walking into the future. She's gonna grow up to be one of the weans for whom the Troubles will be nothing but a ghost story, and that starts here, in the final scene of the special, with her granda excitedly showing her a piece of paper she's too little to fully understand the meaning of, covered in words she can't even read, but that are gonna make it so the stories her big sister and her parents and the rest of her family tell will be just that, stories.

They've all come such a long way from that first episode, and it makes me emotional.

2016 VoicePlay spring events — love all around

A busy winter for VoicePlay rolled into equally packed spring months, full of concerts, educational outreach, personal projects, and growing families.

Here, there, and everywhere

The guys began their spring with a few weeks working on new music at home, during which they fit in a colorful corporate gig alongside Layne's sister- and brother-in-law.

.

The second weekend in April was an absolute whirlwind. They started just outside Denver at the annual CHSAA music festival, where they got to spend two days with student vocal groups, and found a reminder of a friend.

.

From there they headed east for the Boston Sings festival and the CARA ceremony. They didn't win for their "Phantom" video, but they did get to see Deke receive his well-deserved lifetime achievement award in person.

.

The next day, they drove out to Worcester for a matinee concert and a radio interview with Bonnie Johnson on "Colors of Jazz" before flying back home.

The next weekend, the boys traveled back to Wisconsin to make up the second show that had been cancelled by winter weather earlier in the year. One stalwart young fan was so determined to see them that she and her prom date skipped the big dance in favor of the show.

Love you lady, bye bye

During a brief few days back at home, Eli proposed to his girlfriend Ashley before the boys hopped on the Disney Magic for the first of four cruises they'd booked over the next couple of months.

The other work didn't stop just because they were at sea, though. Some of their downtime was spent creating new arrangements and rehearsing for upcoming video shoots. (They did get up to some shenanigans on board, of course.)

After the Magic ended, they had a few days at home before hopping aboard the Disney Wonder.

Give it up for auditioner Tom and his well-timed platypus!

During the few days between the second and third cruise gigs, they filmed the video for "My Shot". Also, Eli and Ashley acquired a new little buddy, a pup named Anna (after the Frozen character).

Then during the three weeks between the third and fourth voyages, VoicePlay recorded their "Aca Top 10 — Bro Country" video with Chris Rupp, released the "Aca Top 10 — Old School Rap" video, and held a launch day event for "My Shot" at Full Sail University.

Just before they were scheduled to set sail again, Layne and Cyndi welcomed their daughter Doris to the world. (Her new uncles were pretty excited, too.)

A little help from their friends

With that happy event, the contingency plans for Layne's paternity leave kicked in, including a few local friends. On their final cruise of the season, Max Herskovitz stepped in on percussion. Erik Winger also subbed for Tony so he could focus on finishing preparations for the impending public launch of PattyCake Productions.

The weekend after they returned to dry land, the guys scooped up buddy Antonio Fernandez once more and trundled down to the Gulf Coast for a concert in Pinellas Park.

By the time they were ready to head up to Ohio for camp at the end of June, Layne was back in the mix (at least for non-oceanic matters), but that's a story that deserves its own post.

Some headcanon Nyotalia names I'd like to share plus some of my reasoning behind them, because why not?

America: Eleanor Louisa Adams; it's primarily a reference to Eleanor Roosevelt (but also Ellie makes a cute nickname for her)-- there's some debate over whether it's another form of Helen or not, but if it is I think the 'bright, shining' meaning would suit her a'la 'shining city upon a hill' vibes! Her middle name Louisa is a reference to Louisa May Alcott, the author of Little Women, and I don't think I need to explain the Abigail Adams reference with her surname.

England: Emma Guinevere Hargrave; I wanted to give her a name in reference to literature, so why not draw inspiration from Jane Austen's Emma herself? The Guinevere is in contrast to 'Arthur', and basically a name drawn from Arthurian legends because yes; Hargrave means 'grey thicket/grove', and it brings to mind the idea of gray skies over London.

Canada: Sarah Maud Cartier; Sarah is biblical like 'Matthew' is, and I mostly chose it because it sounds homey and I like to think she has a more homey personality compared to Matthew's weirder vibes, but also it's a reference to the poet Sarah Anne Curzon; Maud meanwhile is from from Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of Anne of Green Gables. Evidently, I like my literature names.

Russia: Svetlana Rurikovna Akhmatova; Svetlana's an Orthodox Slavic name, but also a reference to Vasily Zhukovsky's ballad 'Svetlana'; Rurikovna is a patronymic that pays homage to Rurik, the founder of Novgorod and whom Russian history likes to trace far back when it comes to the founding of the nation (though there's a lot of contentious debate on that which I won't get into, so feel free to substitute with your own patronymic headcanons); Akhmatova is a reference to 20th century poet Anna Akhmatova.

Germany: Ava Schelling; Ava sounds simple and practical, which is something I think that suits her, but also a reference to Ava of Melk.

Prussia: Dorothea Ritter; Dorothea means 'God's gift' which I feel tells a lot about her already, but it's also a reference to the princess Luise Dorothea of Prussia; Ritter means 'rider/knight' and both give names of power, and overall together they make a very powerful name that suits her somehow I mean--

North Italy: Sofia Bandettini; Sofia means 'wisdom' which is a reference to how a lot of cities during the Renaissance were in the north (and specifically I'm thinking of Florence, because while I like to think Veneto is Feliciano's heart, in Nyotalia North Italy's heart is Tuscany); Bandettini comes from Teresa Bandettini, who was a famous performer during her time.

South Italy: Fiammetta Bandettini; Fiammetta is the nickname of Maria d'Aquino, a Neapolitan noblewoman, but the name also means 'little flame' which is also a reference to the south's prevalence of volcanoes in the south like Mount Etna; Bandettini is from her sister ofc, which I think she was forced to change her surname to during Risorgimento, but prior to that it was Sciara, which is a Sicilian surname.
