Honestly, I'm feeling pretty scared right now, guys. Life is really rough (outside of the already rough politics of everything), and my birthday is coming up on the 18th (I want to do something nice for it, but it's looking more and more like I'll be cancelling all my plans). I'm going to be offline for awhile. I have posts scheduled for most, if not the rest of, June. Thought I'd be fine, but some recent events that transpired today forced me to see otherwise. Different anon: about female character treatment I thought of that too, but for me the female character treatment in the case akutagawa is getting is:

-Being an accessory for other characters (atsushi, dazai)

-Always being puppet in other people's hands and having no agency (dazai, vampirism, ..)

-Being written as if their existence centers around another man (dazai, atsushi) and the author always trying to make this the most important aspect of their character.

-Their trauma is not addressed properly in the story, only it's addressed in relation to other characters or when it'll make a good Angst scene for other characters

-Being called emotional/illogical and annoying by everyone everytime he expresses his trauma by dazai, atsushi, and chuuya in stageplay, and the attitude of anime staff (like the treatment he gets it's always 'you're the problem' and not the guy who abused him)

-He gets the "she is so badass in words, nothing memorable in action"+"strong female character but not as strong as any important male character" female character treatment. In plot he doesn't win anything substantial (the fact that they are strong is just words there's nothing back it up)

-His abuser is written just like those power fantasy mc's who are obnoxiously perfect in everyway and they are right about everything, therefore the treatment their victim's get (usually a female character) is to be blamed for being mistreated by the asshole mc (as if the #1 rule of the plot/narrative is everyone should kiss the ground the mc walks in)

There's more I had thought of, but I can't remember them all rn. Also all of these are a bit exaggerated to make my point.

-by no mean I'm trying to say he has it bad as other female characters out of this series or that he is written just like the other female characters in the bsd (female characters in bsd's treatment has issues but they fall in some different categories). I just always got annoyed by how assagiri handled his character and realized that all of my issues in his writing are basically the same issues I had with how my favorite female characters in other stories are handled..

writing is about YOU and exploring what you like. i totally get being anxious to share that with others -- but it does open you up to more connections and inspiration, and it gets easier every time to hit that 'post now' button.

i get anxious over my stuff too - even a little down in the dumps if a post doesn't do well (but what does really mean in our world of aggressive algorithms and bad tagging systems). but i don't ever regret putting out my writing (which is always self-indulgent as hell)

OH ALSO

please don't stop writing because you think it looks dumb when it's on paper/in your notes app. the brain to actual writing filter can be whack as fuck, so it's really all about practice. i read my stuff out loud sometimes to see if it sounds clunky, and i'm always playing with sentence structure.

at the end of the day, the world needs more self-indulgent writers willing to take a risk. however your writing makes its way into the world (even if it's just for you!), don't stop doing it :)

I'm thinking of getting into arcane, I've seen a few episodes, like the dynamic between jayce and Victor - as someone who's seen it... Do they have a happy ending? I'm ok with spoilers, I know vaguely what happens, but I don't want to get super invested in the show if the ending is like, unambiguously sad... Basically, what am I in for if I continue watching? oh my, oh my, oh my, oh my... that is a COMPLICATED question. cuz... like, since i don't know what you personally look to invest in, or how strongly you feel things, or what you consider "sad" vs what i do, it's a bit hard to answer in way that i think can be useful??? but i'll try!!!

for me, i have zero regrets about the fact that i've watched the full show over twenty times now. does it cause me a lot of emotional anguish every time still? yeah. it's pretty much "emotional anguish" the show. but i am also someone who describes themself as "empathy poisoned" so, like, i very easily feel too much~ to the point where i need to just NOPE out of stuff if it hurts me too much. (i'm looking at you Jujutsu Kaisen) and that might not be true for you. but i also think it's ABSOLUTELY a show worth sticking it out for. even if it's only for the animation and the music! but! even better! every single character will take you on heart-wrenching emotional journey in their own way. just, some definitely get happier endings than others.

but as for Jayvik specifically - would i have liked there to be a world where their ending is more... just... UNAMBIGULOUSLY a cut-and-dry love story??? obviously! i'm a wretched little queer who wants to see their boys get EVERYTHING - but i also don't begrudge the show the very, very beautiful ending that they did get.

throughout the show they both fuck up so much, make the wrong choices so often, and get manipulated by people and forces so far outside of their control that it's little wonder there's so much AU and fix-it-fic written about them. you desperately want better for them. but you also see exactly WHY people ship them. their connection is UNDENIABLE in so many ways and across so many facets. and in the end, Jayce and Viktor choose EACHOTHER over LITTERALLY EVERYTHING ELSE. and it's so beautiful that i absolutely sobbed my eyes out.

do they ever say the words "i love you?" or kiss? no. and what becomes of them is intentionally left super ambiguous. so, in the end, you're really just left with the intense melancholy of knowing that all they want - forever - is just to be together. and that's so fucking beautiful that i just can't help but say it's worth it. 100% absolutely worth it.

I dont subscribe to the house has secret debilitating empathy for people hc..i think he cares, and doesnt want all people to suffer, but he doesnt experience day to day empathy like someone else would. i have next to no empathy and it makes me just a little happy to imagine house having no empathy, because he isn't represented as someone who does only bad despite his lack of empathy, just that his motives are different from "well, ill feel bad if i dont" or "but society says i should care" (this, he would probably call selfish, anyway).

i think he recognizes his lack of empathy but still does the good thing anyway, not because he cares all the time, just that hes not evil, and can make nice choices for others.

Isn't it reductive to lump all LGBTQ identities together? We all have different experiences and you don't have the right to speak for people who's experiences you haven't had, such as lesbians. Being LGBTQ+ should be treated as the status quo, as it is completely normal and natural, and saying we are not is very hurtful and only backs up conservative ideology that we are broken and wrong. We should all work together of course, but treating us as a monolith is reductive and hurtful. You should listen to all lesbians, not just the ones you agree with, as you would with any minority.

i don't believe in lumping experiences together, nope. and i'm not stopping those who disagree with me from believing w/e they want. lesbians who are women, trans and nonbinary and cis and anyone, who love women are 100% lesbians if they identify with that label and have a right to feel how they feel. if they don't identify with that label that's fine too!

everyone experience is unique, so don't go speaking for other ppls gender and experience either m8. I'm allowed to support and cheer on ppl I care about! and it's ok if u don't like that!

i wouldn’t say there’s ever really been a specific time for me. but i’ve always been happiest when i’m pursuing something i really love. having a passion and drive for something is what makes me truly happy.

Hello Pia how are you? Not really an ask but more sending thanks and love for all of your writing. I've been a reader for over a year now and am still in awe of your skill (and speed!). I've been getting back into writing and struggling with feeling inadequate or like my stuff reads childishly, as a result I can barely get out 5k aha, but I'm working viewing it as a lifelong dedication to improvement. (On a side note: your work got my teenaged self to snap out of purity wank, forever grateful!)

It is so awesome that you're getting back into writing!

Honestly, it is a sign of a kind of growth to notice the things you don't like in your writing, because if you feel it reads childishly (and I bet it doesn't all read like that, or most of it doesn't), that means you have skillsets already to aim towards. You can see how you want to get better. This is a skill!!! It's a more painful skill, and it's not a good one to listen to all the time, but it's a good skill to have.

When it feels dispiriting you can balance it out by intentionally looking for and writing down your strengths as well, and writing more of those. It might be only a few lines, or it might be all of the dialogue, or it might be the descriptions, but there will be strengths too!

Also 5k is impressive! Everyone writes differently. It took Mark Z Danielewski 10 years to write House of Leaves, and I love that book a very great deal. Quantity =/= quality, and you also have to remember I've been doing this in a pretty focused way for 10 years! Trust me, if you did this in a focused way for 10 years, you'd be in a different place with your output (which isn't obligation to do this for that long, just that...things take time <3 )

I'm glad you were able to snap out of the purity wank mindset anon, it's a tough one to be in, because it makes you feel like you're not safe in your own mind, and after a while it shuts down curiosity because it feels like everything you're interested in has to be examined just in case it's a moral trap or says something 'terrible' about you if you show interest in it. And that's really hard! It makes sense to me why so many antis kind of really lock into what they think and believe, because they've gotten so used to treating themselves with paranoia, how can they not treat others that way?

And that's a miserable way to live. It's the opposite of benefit of the doubt.

So being able to separate from that is incredible! And that's a tribute to your own curiosity in the world, and interest in exploring different ways of doing things, and I think that's really cool. :D

thank you <3 butchfemme dynamics are very important to me as a femme4butch myself so i'm sure part of it is definitely projecting, but im glad it resonates with other people as well! i think butch representation is so important and rhaenyra models such fun gender ideas within canon and being played by a non binary actor as well adds such a layer to it that's really fun to explore in my writing! i think people often forget that fandom is supposed to be fun!!
