#anti ai scraping

By the way - I've had my work scraped by AI before. I'm protected only in that the AI sucks when it comes to minoritised languages. The site where I saw my work was a scam bookstore selling a Victorian Welsh dictionary and clearly a scraping ai saw my work had the words "Welsh" and "Dictionary" in it and went ham. Resulting in a product description with bits of my work on LGBT+ terminology in it. This anecdote in itself is funny, but the practice of ai scraping is not. I'm a writer and many thousands of writers like me depend on our written output for our livelihoods/careers. Allowing ai scraping on tumblr is putting a lot of people's livelihoods at risk. I don't even earn anything from my work- but I know many others who rely on their writing to get by and I'm so worried for all of them.
I genuinely don't want to leave this site. I refuse to move anywhere else and want to make this a better place. Rather than migrate platforms every few years.
Automattic, do better. Tagging @staff to voice concerns, but do so with the caveat I know it's none of their fault. This is an Automattic issue mainly.

Thread on how to spot AI generated pixels by reyhkibanki on twitter!~ Might be a useful read to help you spot common mistakes AI makes when generating pixels. There's also a lot more info in the link!!

hello fellow comic art fans.
i am the goblin who runs this here blog. otherwise known as @jondoe297
i am extremely bummed that when i do come out and adress the followers of this blog directly it will be with this news. well. here goes:
Comic Art Showcase will indefinitely stop sharing our favorite artists' works until further notice due to the deal tumblr's owner is making with A.I. companies to sell data, enabling the theft of the works of the platform's users to scrape to train their A.I.
and here is a good article about what's going on
while for the over 5 years(!!) now that i have run this page and shared the love of comic art i am so passionate about, through ups and downs,i have kept this page strictly for doing so. not presenting any topics or ideas or even showing my own personality or linking my personal blog(even though i have been flirting with the idea recently. well i guess now is as good a time as any) i feel that if nothing else i have to use this specific platform i have,as it is,to address this topic as it is intrinsic and intertwined with this page's theme or activity. and i will not have it be an open buffet for these greedy corporations to scrape for data to feed the A.I. with which they seek to replace the very artists that i love and admire! even though it may be too late as we don't really know how long they've been doing this. well the inevitable came. and if this page is not deleted it will at least not be posted on for the time being. while we figure out what to do next.
in the meantime we can and have to all do what we can to fight for artists' and creatives' rights. if nothing else by not being a part of the theft and exploitation of them an their work. please do not use any generative A.I. programs for images or text. they work by scraping from databases of artists' and creatives' works without any permission, credit or compensation.
for now we can at least 'opt out' of having our content be shared with the A.I. companies in the settings.
keep in mind this seems to be only available on the web version and not on the app for now!
go to your blog settings from the corner here
Tumblr media
ID/image description: a screenshot of the tumblr blog with a red arrow pointed at the options button. end description.
then go to 'blog settings'
Tumblr media
ID/image description: a screenshot of tumblr blog settings with a red arrow pointing at the 'blog settings' option. end description.
then go to visibility. and turn ON the 'prevent third-party sharing' option. make sure to turn it ON not off.
Tumblr media
ID/image description: screenshot of tumblr's visibility settings with the 'prevent third-party sharing' option turned on. end description.
and you have to do this for each blog and sideblog individually so make sure to do that!
and artists make sure to use Nightshade and Glaze to protect your artwork and images!!!!
here's a link to Nightshade
here's a link to Glaze
the best combination is to use Nightshade first then Glaze on your images.
Glaze creates a protective layer on the image to prevent A.I. from copying it. while Nightshade poisons the A.I. sotfware.
stay safe friends an i will see you around❤

Posting this here too because fuck ‘em and they advertise everywhere: do not buy from or support @strikegentlyco . They’ve been caught using generative ai for a handful of their blanket designs. “By independent artists” my ass. They’ve since removed the ‘in collaboration with Dalle’ from the capybara blanket btw, this is 100% intentional.

Behold
i am so tired of this. we are so tired of this. between Bob Iger's garbage comments, that one executive straight out sayin they'll wait out the strikes till people start losin their homes an now this. how long do they think they can keep treating the creatives they get rich off while doin nothin themselves like this? till when will they do an say whatever they want an keep gettin away with it? not long now.. not long. not anymore.
also Karla Ortiz keeps kickin butt❤

here's a link to the Have I Been Trained website for you to click
ALSO! use Glaze to protect the images of your work you post!
here's a link to that as well for you
it basically creates a protective layer on the image that prevents AI from stealin it. Very important. all the info is on the site.

tbh the worst part of this newest ai debacle is the simple fact that being given the option to opt out still puts Tumblr head and shoulders above it's competition for data security. and that's not a compliment to Tumblr.
Because like. let's be frank here. Mindjourney was already scraping Tumblr and probably had been before mindjourney even went public. The anti scraping infrastructure on this site amounts to a "pretty please don't download this:(" note and some misdirection. * And that's still more than a lot of major tech companies are doing. MJ is paying for convenience, not for access.
but by entering an official partnership mindjourney touching shit it doesn't have explicit permission to means an easy court date for a site that's in desperate need for cash. It sucks that this is still one of the best places to post art.

I know today’s updates about Tumblr’s AI deal are looking catastrophic and we all need to take a deep breath before we blow everything out of the water
But please for the love of God, if you can turn on the third-party opt-out for your blog, DO IT NOW FOR THE SAKE OF THE ARTISTS YOU FOLLOW AND REBLOG

Haven't decided yet whether or not to stick around, but I'm on your other assorted social medias (twitter/instagram).

Ao3 and AI
They made a short blog post here and I dearly hope you read it, but the most important thing is:
1. Most AIs are trained off one dataset, the Common Crawl dataset.
2. Common Crawl can be be blocked in two lines of code.
3. Ao3 implemented that code in December 2022.
4. Fics that were already scraped will remain scraped and there's nothing we can do about it, but any fics posted after they put in that code will not be used to train AI unless the AI-makers make a new data-scraper.
5. Ao3 has also put code in place to slow down scrapers and they check their traffic for signs of abuse.
In short, you do not need to set your fic to members-only to stop it from being part of the Common Crawl dataset, though it will add another layer of protection for other scrapers if you feel really strongly about it. Please note that the blog post says locking your fic "will not block every potential scraper."
