“you should have an organised biographical timeline for your characters” “you should have a detailed chapter outline before writing the book” “you should make a pinterest folder for inspo and visual” my plan literally is a compiled unfinished google doc of disorganised 15k word dump in arial font 11 and half of it is crossed out in green from suggestions because i always let my silly little whims that make no sense whatsoever take over me and it looks so damn ugly and chaotic that it physically pains me to look at it

When I began putting my thoughts and ideas together to begin writing a story, I noticed how scattered my notes felt. I would start with an idea, backtrack due to being struck with a new idea, and then lose my place and my progress. I decided to make a Notion template to help me finish some of my stories and bring life to my ideas.
This Notion writing template was created to provide a structured step-by-step approach to the writing process equipped with Activity Schedulers, Progress Trackers, comprehensive Character Profiles, in-depth Worldbuilding Profiles, and databases for the Outline, Drafts, and Scene Cards. Going step-by-step is not imperative for experienced writers. The procedural layout has been implemented to help new writers make a start beginning with creating a writing prompt to starting their first draft. It's optimized for new writers, experienced writers, fanfic writers, and hobbyists.

What do you usually use to write? Like what software/app? Do you just use tumblr or like office word or google docs etc? I’ve been using google docs but everything feels not as organized as I’d like it to be
P.S I love your work and hope you’re doing good! <3
hi anon, thank you so much!! 🥺💖 I hope you’ve been doing good as well! and I would love to talk about what I’ve tried (and if anyone has suggestions please chime in!
I started with google docs (i wouldn't recommend writing in tumblr ((or ao3)) unless you're doing something short - the amt of times my posts have crashed & I've lost bits is astronomical) but I didn't like each chapter being a whole different document, and I'd get lost keeping all the chapters in the same file.
my friend @obiknights recommended an app called Bear, it's a note-taking app and you can group notes by hashtags (so I'd use the fic title to group them). I used that for 2 years, but right now there isn't web support (iOS/Android), and so I was only really able to write on my phone with it.
recently (with @jolapeno’s suggestion) I switched to notion, and am really liking it so far! I'm able to have a master page with all my notes / plot thoughts for a series, and then nest each chapter within it (or have pages for fandoms, and then link one-shots for that series and wips within it for easy sorting). (plus there’s a ton of free templates to make things pretty, and I also use it to keep track of trades, writing challenges, & fic reading as well) I feel like it had a bit of a learning curve but I truly believe if I could figure it out then anyone could!
there is also a new writing website called ellipsus that's been recommended to me - there’s not app (just web) but they promise not to use AI to train their software, so I would definitely like to check it out in the future! that is cross-platform as well (and free), and looks super sleek.
thank you for asking!! 💖

I started writing "4 srs" this month and I like how free and accessible writing is, so I'm recommending free software I've experimented with that might help people who want to get into the hobby!
“Specifically Created for Writing Stories”
-------------------------------
Manuskript – Story organizer / word processor. Has an outliner and index card function, along with distraction free mode. Lets you switch between different templates such as a non-fiction mode or a short story.
Bibisco – Novel writing software that includes writing goals, world-building, distraction free mode, and a timeline.
“I Just Want to Write”
---------------------------
LibreOffice – Microsoft 365 alternative, but free! LibreOffice Writer is what I wrote this tumblr post in before I posted it. Also if you copy & paste the text into the Rich Text Editor on AO3, it seems that it actually converts it properly. Nice! No need for scripts.
Note-Taking
-------------------------------
Zim Wiki - note taking application that is very, very lightweight (1.1mb). It functions with a tree structure, so I’d personally recommend it for world-building and character bios. There are built-in plugins that also turn it into a good software for task management (it even has a article on how to use it for GTD) and journalling. See also: CherryTree (2mb), which is a more outdated-looking app, but functions similarly.
Obsidian MD – The Big Boy. markdown note editor that has been adopted by personal knowledge management fans---if it doesn’t do something you want it to do, just look in the community plugins to see if someone has already done it. Some unique non-word processing related usages I’ve found is the ability to create a table of contents dashboard, a image gallery for images, embedding youtube videos and timestamping notes, so forth.
Logseq – A bullet point based markdown note editor that also has PDF annotations, Zotero integration, flashcard creation, and whiteboards. Best used for outlining projects due to the bullet point structure.
Joplin – A modern app comparable to Zim Wiki, it’s basically just a note-taking software that uses folders and tags to sort easier. Looks prettier than Zim Wiki and Cherry Tree
Notion – An online-only website that allows usage of different database types. Free for personal use. Note: I dislike the AI updates that have been making the app lag more. I prefer the others on this list.
Mind Maps
-------------------------------
Freeplane – So much goddamn features, including a ton of add-ons. Looks somewhat ugly, but it works for anyone willing to spend a while learning how to use it.
Mermaid – Text-based diagram creator. Can be used in apps like Joplin, Notion, and Obsidian.
Obsidian’s Canvas – A core plugin for Obsidian, it deserves its own mention in that it allows you to create embedded notes of the mindmap nodes. Thus, if you want to create a 20-page long note and have it minimized to the size of a penny on the mindmap, you could.
Other Things That Might Be Of Interest
Syncthing - A free software that allows you to sync between two or more computers. Have a desktop but also laze around on a laptop in bed, coming up with ideas?? This is your buddy if you don't want to use a online software.

I do not do paid commissions, but you are always welcome to send requests. You might get lucky, @nikandrros certainly has. I don't guarantee I will write them, but they will sit on the concept board for consideration until I find something to do with them. I like to hoard them and open them when I am in the mood to make a bunch of one-shots.

✿ What happened to your fanfiction.net account? ✿
I had my start on ff.net, and I intended to upload to both ff.net and AO3 when I started transferring my work over, but then ff.net had a series of problems (stats page dying and email issues) that went on for months with no communication, and I didn't want to put up with uploading to their system every week to a site that was being so mismanaged.
Don't worry! Nothing has disappeared, though. Everything has just been uploaded to my AO3: 𝙰𝙾𝟹 𝙰𝚌𝚌𝚘𝚞𝚗𝚝.

✿ Do you have a donation link? ✿
No, I do this for free. I don't need your money. If you want to pay me back, leave me comments on your favorite stories. They pay my heart in joy and keep me writing.

Ways I have procrastinated today:
Dicked about with Notion for an hour. Did nothing with it because I was confused.
Spent half an hour on Canva playing with my moodboard.
Looked up hotels in Butte, MT.
Then checked them out on booking.com (!?)
Worked out how long it would take to walk from various points in Butte to other various points in Butte.
Googled 'things to do in Butte for tourists', then looked up each individual 'thing to do in Butte for tourists' to produce a four day itinery for my characters... that will never be used.
Read the Wikipedia page for the Berkeley Pit. It's gross and somewhat horrifying.
Discovered that a TV show called 1923 was filmed in Butte.
Spent time reading the Wikipedia page for said TV show. It's a prequel to Yellowstone and a sequel to 1883, did you know that? Sounds interesting. I haven't seen any of them.
Looked for wordcount templates on google sheets... which I don't need because I have a very serviceable sheet already.
Changed the heading colours of my google spreadsheet. I've given it a kind of Miami Vice vibe.
Interspersed all of this with flicking through tumblr mindlessly, checking emails for AO3 updates and reading fics.
And somehow I still managed to write a 1000 words.

Exchange Wants/Do Not Wants
So I took the the time to create a Notion template that everyone can customize and save to fill out for exchanges. I often times struggle to fill out my list of wants/do not wants because I'll generally read anything that's put in front of me. This way you only need to make minor tweaks depending on the theme of the exchange or if it's for a different ship/fandom. Feel free to duplicate it and use as you see fit. I hope it helps.
I used tables for the actual want/do not want for my record keeping but it might be more beneficial for people doing an exchange through AO3 to use a text section rather than a table since it doesn't keep the formatting.

Since I mostly write short oneshots there is often zero planning involved, maybe a few sentences or a list of things I wanna include if we are going into 2k+ words territory.
For longfics/multichapters I usually have a planning document (or a few), a "published" document (I tend to post right after the new chapter is finished, no schedule, no waiting while the while fic is done, nothing) which includes all chapters that are finished and are public, and a draft document (usually just the next chapter, might include a few random future scenes after a strike if inspiration).
Now, published + draft has been done in LibreOffice recently, previously I've used MS Word. The planning document(s)... honestly, whatever floats my boat that day. For some of the currently started/planned projects I have:
* a messy word doc: outline, quotes from the original media where I want to keep track of specific details or character voices, a page or two of backstory that idk yet how I'm going to nicely embed into the actual prose, probably some other shit
* an excel doc because I wanted to track the days/scenes in more structured format
* a messy notion page with patches of the outline and some tarot cards meaning in between (that was my desperate attempt to brainstorm the middle of the fic through a tarot spread)
* a very detailed worldbuilding section with character profiles, worldbuilding info, character's weekly schedule, calendar, and a giant scenes table. It's half abandoned and I haven't touched it in a year
But my notion pages are very organised! XD
PS for pre-planning ao3 tags, I usually use project's page I have in my WIPs kanban board - just as a simple list of additional tags. For works posted for one specific event, where I'm uploading works on ao3 on behalf of other people too, I have a more sophisticated template for all tag categories, so I can just copypaste all the necessary information when posting.
hello writers.
