i remember someone on youtube (i think it was the sin squad somewhere in this video) mentioned that it'd have been nice, and probably more realistic, if just one character had chosen to not unconditionally forgive catra, and honestly... i can almost completely agree with that statement.

the point of my reblog here wasn't necessarily to argue otherwise, but just that what we got made sense considering what we know about catra's relationships to those people (or rather the other way around i suppose), and it wasn't as unsatisfying (to me at least) as cr1t1cs claim. i think both of these ideas can co-exist.

that being said as a pre-requisite, i don't think there should be an issue in the fandom had the show chosen to go down that route instead. i fear hardcore catra stans may treat entrapta unfairly when she'd be 100% in the right for having her reservations, but i try to separate fanon issues from canon criticisms because it's really irritating when people form their opinions over something the piece of media itself has no control over.

my belief about what would have happened in that scene from "taking control" is that catra was already prepared for a less positive outcome since this was her sincere expression, and she was now decidedly past reacting with contempt to not hearing what she wanted:

so it seems to me that the unspoken implication is that she thought she deserved to be hated, and accepted the notion as a continuation of her earlier line to adora ("i know you all hate me!") and confusion about why she had been rescued despite everything:

it would've been interesting to watch catra & entrapta learn to work together until they got back to etheria despite hard feelings still being present, though i have no doubt the latter would still be up to it, whether for removing the chip or going on the mission to krytis. i am of the opinion that entrapta wouldn't be the "i never want to talk to you again at any cost regardless of how immature that makes me in your eyes" type, but rather the "i just don't want to be close friends with you and would prefer to keep my distance once it's all over for a while" type, which is what the audience probably assumed was going to be scorpia's attitude after the episode she left the horde, but i stand by that fundamentally misunderstanding her character and doing a disservice to her active kindness outlook to the world. the same goes for entrapta regarding what actually happened, but since we're not focusing on that, this is my own interpretation based on staying true to it while on a different but equivalent path.

I’m gonna be honest; maybe it’s just me but it’s always been pretty easy 4 me 2 sympathize w/ Razor and Sardine- XP Part of it is cuz yknow… They’re just fictional characters and it takes a lot 4 me 2 h8 some1 dat dosent exist, but also idk how 2 explain it but I can so see why both of them turned out the way they did, idk how 2 describe it but when I look @ their environments and thought processes it just makes sense; I always saw them less so as irredeemable demons and more so as cats that probably have a cluster b personality they refuse 2 get treated resulting in them becoming horrible ppl :P

I'm actually going to push back on that pretty hard. Razor and Sardine do NOT have Cluster B Personality Disorders (antisocial personality disorder/sociopathy, borderline personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, and narcissistic personality disorder).

As far as I'm aware, people with Cluster B Personality Disorders are actually more likely to be the victims of violence than perpetrators of it. While it is true that they are also more likely to be violent than people with other disorders, these disorders are highly stigmatized and it would be irresponsible of me to say that my two worst villains have them and that's why they are murderers and abusers and sadists. That does actual harm to people who have these disorders.

As well, these disorders are often linked to childhood trauma which neither Razor or Sardine have, but you guys wouldn't know about that because I haven't told you guys anything about their backstories which means that there are a lot of assumptions being made here. Razor and Sardine are hugely privileged and their malice comes from that privilege, and more importantly their entitlement.

They believe the world belongs to them because they're men and they're house cats. They face no consequences for their violence and so they get more violent. These are very mundane and banal reasons for evil and I explicitly wanted to create villains who were cruel for those kinds of banal reasons. They are irredeemable specifically because they refuse to be redeemed.

I feel like you want to have a woobified version of my characters in your head so you interpret them as being victims of their disorder when in the text they are first and foremost fascists. I don't mean to be harsh but this is such a harmful misreading of my text that I can't help but be a little upset by it. But also, please don't feel the need to apologize or grovel for upsetting me. I'd ask that instead you stop and think and do research on these disorders and consider what harmful assumptions you may be unknowingly holding onto.

Rez Dogs Analysis

I want to do a scene analysis of this episode because it was absolutely beautiful!!

In this scene we see Fixico worried about Chebon, trying to apologize (in his own way) by telling him that their family is there to support him. wich is what he really needs and even admits to Mable earlier by saying that Fixico doesn't acknowledge that he doesn't have parents, and how much different their lives are because of it...

but Notice the LIGHTING!!

it's so very colorful and almost Halo like, Chebon even mentions it "Don't you look at me with your holier than thou aura" while getting mad and telling him to fuck off

Then we have the star people secen, on the car ride back home from the river Irene and Bucky are going on about how the relationship between Elders and Kids is severed by the school system.

Immediately the lighting in this scene is very different, devoid of color and almost soulless.

Mind you this is just my theory and observations as a veiwer!!

I believe the alien claiming to be Chebon's "ancestor" dosent appear because of the drugs but in fact a direct consequence of having a broken relationship with family. Throughout the episode we see him denying support whether directly (like with Fixico) or indirectly (with the school coach). It's obvious he doesn't want help but the people around him can tell he desperately needs it and want to be there for him as a community

I don't believe it is entirely his fault although he does deny help, to me he has a reason to! he feels ostracized by his community, being picked on by his friends, and (assumingly) growing up in boarding schools he didn't get those same family relationships as his friends, besides Fixico who he's currently mad at.

The star person that shows up to me is a metaphor for losing your way. Based on the first couple of episodes of the season this visit has effected him into late adulthood, believing in the star people and seeking them out. Chebon/Max is simply a lost soul, failed by the system, and it makes sense he found Bear when he did; Bear was also lost not just physically but spiritually, wanting to leave the reservation and shooing off his spirit guide. He returns to the reservation after the Deer Lady finds him, but not before she kills the Boarding school director/principal.

are we seeing the common theme this season? schooling and taking Indigenous peoples out of their community, and how traumatic this can be on Indigenous peoples. all I can hope is that Bear and the rest of the rez dogs can break this generational trauma.

The townspeople and shop keeps that you are regulars at often did what they could to help you, giveibg you a bag, describing what you can't feel, helping you out in the ways that they can it was allways amazing how well you have been treated here.

You heard a horse and used your stick to try to get out of the way, accidentally hitting someone. You quickly apologized to the man and the horse rider for being in th way. The voice closer to you accepted your apology and asked if you wanted any help with the things you have. You quickly denied it, hearing a bit if a scoff from higher up, so you assumed that it came from either the horse or the rider.

Then a drunk man came up, startling you, and started talking shit. You gave him a good twack with your cane to shut him up and get him back to your senses before apologizing for the man and leaveing.

By the time you made it back to the bookshop, a man's voice you kind of recognized, but couldn't put a name to was there.

Chalaver: his first impression was that you were foolish, but can be quite amusing. It didn't fully sink in that you were blind until the two of you met again. He was coverd in blood, bodies around him. You didn't exactly react to it, useing the sick infront of you getting closer. Before it hit a body "... Chalaver, what is going on?" You asked, clearly nervious. But he told you exactly what happend "I just killed three assasins. Why are you two here."

When it comes to learning and evaluating on how he would be as a king. He was oddly enough, quite kind to you and willing to help when you ask for it. He may have read to you once or twice when he brakes into your room.

When it comes to balls, he makes sure that Clavis takes damn good care of you and explains things well.

Clavis: he absolutely has so much fun with you. He often tries to scare or prank you since it was easy. Eventually, you just fucking KNOW when Clavis tries to come up and tease you.

You and Clavis eventually find ways to prank others and team up. You both terrify everyone.

When it comes to events, he often is the one to escort you. He goes around with you, describing things, talking, and the both for you haveing funnnnnn

Nokoto: you are quite the challenge for him. Instead of looks and words, he has to mainly rely on words. He does everything in his power to get you to fall in love with him and crown him king.

You can tell the kindness runs a bit hollow so deny it. It did shock him, but he likes it.

He dosent blame you and does what he can to help you. He has heard of you from before he made it to thr palace and was glad to have finally met you. The kind blind book keeper.

He is one of the first to get extremely protective and a bit coddleing. When you state that you don't need his help with everything he steps back a bit

Leon: he is quite amazed by you. In awe of you from the moment he met you.

He is the most respectful of your boundaries. He helps you the second most when it comes to his group. He is still extremely busy after all.

Jin: He keeps you at an arms distance and you can feel it. You don't exactly push it, but you don't leave him completely alone either.

Whenever you spend time with him is quite funny, it's clear he is very interested in women. But getting drunk with him is also alot of fun and whenever you have you two had a blastttt

Your designated bakup escort for events. When you both go to them, you both go and talk to each brother there for a bit, before going to then next, dance a bit, then he takes you to your room before he hits on women

Yeves: in general, Yeves is probably the most helpful person there. He may be very accident prone, as seen by the amout of times you have hit him with your stick, hearing him fall, etc. He is truely kind and just as helpful as Rio.

He absolutely dresses you up and describes how you look. It nearly makes you cry sometimes with how well he puts his words towards you.

Licht: he is someone you allways had an acute awareness of. He does what he can to stay away from you, as to not bother you with his mere existence.

But you manage to catch him and bring him over for a conversation.

He is eventually convinced to take you rideing, letting you have a horse to yourself that knows to just follow Licht. Letting you have that bit of independence and freedom.

Sarel: the palace Demon let's you off a little easier. He makes it easier for you to learn what you need to, helps with things you didn't know or ever really realize.

Rio: MVP! He has learned over the years what you need help with and what you donr need help with. He loves giveing you books in brail because of the way you just light up.

He is very overprotective when it comes to you and tries to keep you away from danger as best as possible.

Gilbert: finds it adorable that Rhodinite has a blind Belle. He thinks it makes it a little easier to fool you, but does recognize that you do have strengths in other areas.

So whenever he has gotten the chance to spend time alone with you, he can't help but admire you for being able to allow yourself to be without one of the princes or your gaurd dog. He does tease you about it of course.

Silvio: honestly, at first he was quite rude, he didn't take your stick but, he still manhandled you. You were clearly a little scared of him at first, and Rio didn't at ALL pour a bottle of wine onto Silvio.

After some time together since he demanded that you be a hostess every once in awhile for him. You two did get closer, and he does treat you like an equal and easily forgets your blind at times. But when he rembers, he is sure to describe things or let you toutch things. If you like how somethibg feels its yours.

Keith and Alter: Keith is the most accommodating out of all the forgin Princes. He takes note of what you need for support and does what he can to be that. He doubts that you have any direct links to Gilbert himself.

When it comes to Alter, he is more suspicious of you. He was formed after all to protect Keith and Jade itself. So, he does sometimes front to ask some questions of the sort. But it does die down over time as he grows to trust you, and gets protective of you whenever he fronts. At the cost of a bit of teasing and a pinch of obsession.

You allways were able to tell whither Keith or Alter fronts due to the change in pitch of his voice since it's all you have to go off of. You once even asked Alter what his name was to both his and Keith's shock, he did say Keith but it's now in the back of Alter's mind that... maybe he could figure out his own name.. just for you to use. Back home she had one sibling and both her parents worrying about her but she knows nothing about them she dosent rember it. She was getting out of the hospital after a botched suicide attempt after prom when she dissapeared so she appeared out of the coffin bandaged up. Not tempering anything that had happened.

She hasent tried to kill her self again tho she dose keep a knife of a small sharp object on her in case she gets stressed out making sure to keep it so an area that’s always coverd up so she dosent get questioned. Rhue alway makes it seems like her problems aren’t worth dealing with so she pushed them down and helps everybody else’s befor helping her self.

Post book seven she’d start learning to rely on others more and talk openly about her problems despite not feeling like there adequate enough to even be problems. Mostly the problem of her not belonging to the world and missing a place she can’t rember and people she can’t rember.

zemo couldn't sleep the scent of you drove him mad he wanted nothing more than to rut deep inside of you . he was fascinated with you while u were at hydra. he had a soft spot for you that was why he would train your harder, he didnt want you being replaced. when he almost lost you he separated you from the soldier, unless the two of you were sparing or on a mission. he couldnt out his finger on it but he didnt want to let you go unfortunately him pushing you so hard caused him to one of the first ones you attacked when you finally did snap it was terrifying. he wanted to teach you how to cook the dishes from his home land sonce you seemed so intrigued by them . he knew he had to bring the soldier back with or without you he snarled at the thought of them hurting you again he get up to take a shower hoping it would help he allowed the water to run he leaned his head back trying to calm him self .

Hi! I got an idea how "mahiru poison theory" can go down that dosent involve her poisoning the food on day 16!

On day 9 we see a recipe for "corspe reviver" right next to Mahiru. Corpse reviver and it has multiple recipes, right next to Mahiru is "corpse reviver 1" but it also has "corpse reviver 2" which actually involves absinthe. Absinthe is deadly in high dosages.

Because of the day 9 entry, talking about how Mahiru's boyfriend nearly drank himself unconscious of Mahiru's first bar date (and possibly first date, but that's not confirmed I think) and inclusion of a written down hangover cure may imply Mahiru's boyfriend had a drinking problem and Mahiru had to remember how to make hangover cures (hence corpse reviver being written down).

Also along with the boyfriend's other bad traits implied throughput the days- distant, insensitive, and also the bad implications of day 12 (not sure if you need a memory refresher on this but Mahiru states she went to his house foe the first time, and mentions that she was so nervous she couldn't eat all day and can't actually remember anything. Not being able to remember anything on her end may be because of a traumatic experience that day).

It would make sense if one day while Mahiru was making an hangover cure for him- she intentionally, or maybe even unconsciously (cause she said her murder was a result of her just being herself after denying the murder was cause of jealousy) added more absinthe than needed and her boyfriend ended up dying of alcohol poisoning.

Maybe even her intention for adding more absinthe than needed was just to try and scare him into not drinking anymore, like giving him a taste of what alcohol poisoning was but he ended up dying anyway.

I'm just rambling now but those are just some thoughts on mahiru poison theory lol

You're fine I don't view it as rambling it's a remarkably interesting point I hadn't considered. Though it's always funny to me to see people that don't think the poison theory is possible because of all the allusions to it spread across Mahiru's voice drama, mv visuals, and song lyrics. So, first with your hangover remedies idea.

Your theory can directly tie into the comment Mahiru makes about Es' memory problems within the voice drama. Three minutes and three seconds into Mahiru's first interrogation her and Es have this exchange.

Before getting back into that though-

TL;DR- This is the second contrast between Shidou and Mahiru. Shidou is a doctor in the technical and legal sense. However, people have conveniently overlooked that holistic doctors exist. It's likely that Mahiru was a practitioner of traditional or holistic medicine. Her door even resembles that of a fancy garden or greenhouse.

It's not uncommon for shops like these to allow employees to take/keep flowers that didn't sell in time. There also happens to be multiple flowers tied to holistic medicine and traditional medicine. Including well known ones like Jasmine, Lavender, Rose. A friend got me a facial for my birthday and the technician used orange water stating how it benefits the skin as she did.

This makes it likely that Mahiru was a practitioner of traditional or holistic medicine in some way. Especially if she can recall the benefits of Gingko Tea from memory in casual conversation. That showcases a level of comfort with the topic as though it's something she looks out for in her everyday life.

Which would definitely make her crime just being herself or doing what she usually does. However, that doesn't necessarily excuse it. If she knew what she was doing was lethal or not should be interrogated before coming to a conclusion on her. Especially since she isn't ignorant to these things and makes active choices to immerse herself more deeply in them.

Her, using homemade remedies to cure his hangovers is possible. However, the timing portrayed in her mv fails to properly support this idea. Now admittedly the timing could be warped and out of order leaving room for this to be possible. However, Mahiru wakes up and sees something that upsets her that us the viewers cannot see.

This is similar to Futa sitting in his room and looking over his phone at the end of Bring It On. Most, including myself, have assumed these to be their responses to news about or the incident in question. If Mahiru woke up to him dead and taking into consideration hangover remedies tend to be used the morning after drinking she wouldn't have had time to make him one before the incident.

Now she could've gotten up early with that in mind and made him one in a bit of a morning haze knowing his drinking habits then went back to sleep. However, that is the most generous and benefit of the doubt giving interpretation of events. Yet, it is very much still possible.

She cooked him a lot of food and if he'd just gotten back from work he could have had drinks alongside it a bit of one man party as Mahiru went to bed knowing she'd have to make something to stave off his hangover early the next morning. This line in her first mv might not even be referring to a clingy nature but a doting one similar to how Shidou is with Amane-

"Giving you love to the point of pulling you down. It’s just because I still get worried, please forgive me."

She could have been a mothering type of girlfriend one who goes "Have you been eating enough? You've been working a lot don't you think it may be time for a break." Something we see a lot during her first interrogation with Es.

This line could be referring to her tendency to worry and dote on her significant others to the point it comes off as babying and infantilizing. But- she doesn't mean any harm by it- It's just love- she just gets a bit worried, and she wants the people she loves to be healthy and happy... She's sorry if she overstepped any. It's difficult for someone to be genuinely mad at that sort of behavior when with someone.

In fact, when I showed my nephew who is married Mahiru's song giving him the knowledge she was voted guilty beforehand he viewed it and was like, "Guilty she was just being a good girlfriend Gigi look at how much food she cooked him! Guilty why what did she do tell me what they think she did?! All she been doing is being nice-you can't be nice now?" showed him Mahiru trial two and he was like "Damn she got fucked up bullshit she didn't deserve this god damn."

Even the line after that one isn't as bad as it was made out to be.

It's very common for people in unbalanced relationships to break up repeatedly. Especially if one partner is taking on a caretaker sort of role and they feel their actions are underappreciated and the other partner is getting rightfully annoyed at being treated like a baby. A breakup doesn't mean the relationship is inherently unhealthy or toxic. It doesn't even mean it's over for good.

At times it means that a miscommunication has happened that can't be resolved through further communication at this time. Breaking up or taking a break is a good way to take a step outside of and away from the relationship to reflect on one's feelings towards it. A lot of people in long standing adult relationships have broken up twice or more along the way.

Most relationships in life will at one point or another benefit from one or more partners having the tenacity to realize they need to come back be present and hear out their partner even at times they feel they aren't being understood. This mindset isn't even limited to romantic relationships.

If two or more people can't do that then that's when any relationship ends. It isn't good to keep relying on breaking up to work past communication hurdles and it can become manipulative after a point. However, it is something that happens and doesn't immediately lean towards an abusive framing.

However, all of the information we have on Mahiru, and her relationship lead me to believe that it was not an equal partnership. That while her boyfriend and her weren't bad for each other their communication styles stunted and ultimately hindered their progression and ability to foster the open communication necessary to have a long-lasting healthy relationship.

Though at this point I might be rambling- Thanks for asking! I don't remember if I ever had the opportunity to highlight that both Mahiru and Shidou could be medical practitioners just in different ways. I've said a lot about Mahiru's relationship but not her sadly. She really is interesting and incredibly knowledgeable about things that interest her. I bet she'd have great romance book recommendations. I hope we get to see more about her outside of her relationship in her second mv.

Though we probably won't. Oh! Mahiru's ties to traditional medicine may tie into why Amane threatened her but not Futa. If Amane had seen Mahiru using herbal remedies to an extent before getting the wheelchair she'd have more reason to be hostile about it. Amane may have viewed the wheelchair as more of a problem since it can be construed as Mahiru progressing in medical practices. Moving from traditional to technical.

Different Path Taken Ch20: P1 Lunar Caldera

Introducing: Ellis and Ava!! and also featuring a performance of Callum's famous jerkface dance!

I'm thinking about doing the second half of this chapter a little differently than before, and switching up the perspectives a bit. I kinda wanna just let Runaan do a full on lore dump, so maybe the second half will be mostly just like, his dialogue, written as narration, and with just the occasional prompting quotes from the others to keep him moving through topics? Kinda like Callum's spellbook type narration. I'm not sure if that would be too much of a switch considering the rest of the work though, and I've never written anything like that so Idk if it'd actually flow that well.

Everyone was tense, and Ezran was already tired.  Callisto had said he probably would be, after everything he’d been through the day before, but he didn’t really understand why.  He’d been swimming for a few minutes, and it had been really cold, but he slept for he didn’t even know how long afterward, and had awoken nice and warm and dry wrapped up in the elves’ blankets and Ram’s clothes in the cave.  They’d had that snowball fight, he guessed, and then they’d been worried in town for the egg.

He still worried for it.  The little bits of movement he’d heard from inside it, the warmth it radiated, the feeling of a little sleeping presence, had gone largely still and quiet.  There was still something, but the presence was so much fainter. 

Maybe he was just discouraged and that was why his feet were so heavy as they hiked up the sharp, rocky slopes of the mountain.  Callum didn’t seem to be delayed at all, and Ezran pouted at his brother’s back as he scurried ahead at Runaan’s heels, asking him endless questions.  He could use some help back here. 

At least Skor and Callisto were walking back with him.  Andromeda and Rayla were ahead too, and Ram was so far in front Ezran kept losing sight of him.  Corvus had tried to walk in the rear, but several of the elves had bared their fangs at him and Runaan had ordered him shortly to stay where he could see him, so he was also far ahead of Ezran.

Ezran glanced over at Skor gratefully just in time to see him wince faintly, and frowned, looking the elf over.  He was walking a bit gingerly on one foot. “Are you okay?” He asked in sudden worry for his new friend.

Skor smiled faintly at him and shrugged.  He snapped his fingers to get Callisto’s attention and signed something over to them. 

Callisto seemed to fall into being his voice as easily as Gren did for Aunt Amaya. “I twisted my ankle on the other trail - when I fell, and dropped you during the avalanche.  I’m sorry about that.”

Ezran blinked at the older man blankly. “That wasn’t your fault.  Bait’s the one who burped.” He pointed out, holding up the glow toad as if to prove it.  Bait turned faintly pink with embarrassment and groaned reluctant agreement. 

Skor’s mouth cracked open in a real smile and he signed something else to Callisto, who dutifully relayed his words as Ezran focused on his hands, habitually trying to pick up familiar signs.  There really weren’t any, given shadow sign wasn’t the same as Katolian sign, but it was hard to break the habit. “I know, little one.  I just feel bad for droppin’ you.  I’m just glad you’re alright.”

That just made Ezran more determined to prove him right, to show that he was okay, that he could keep going.  He squared his shoulders. “You don’t have to feel bad.  Accidents happen to everyone!  But if it helps, I forgive you.” 

The elf laughed softly, the noise rattling somewhere in his chest as Callisto snickered too, and a gentle hand squeezed Ezran’s shoulder gratefully.  The shadow sign for thank you was similar enough that Ezran knew it without Callisto relaying it to him, and he grinned back proudly at catching it.

He still wasn’t as good at sign language as Callum, and now he had to add a whole other sign language to his learning list!  It was worth it for the way it made Aunt Amaya and Skor both smile though.

“Look ahead,” Runaan called from in front of them, and they all looked up. 

“Oh wow, I didn’t know there were so many of you!  Hi hi hi!” The little human girl said brightly from the back of the wolf. “I came to show you how to find the miracle healer!  Come on!” 

Without waiting for an answer, she and the wolf turned around and bounded up the slope ahead. 

“I assume that’s the girl and wolf ye mentioned?” Callisto asked, as they all abruptly stopped, the elves all just sort of staring after her.

Ezran nodded. “Yep.  At least we have someone with us who knows where to find the miracle healer now!  Maybe she won’t be all the way at the top like the Guardian is.” He said, with a cringing look up the slope. 

“Oh, wait, let me introduce you guys!” Callum called, and they all converged on Ellis and Ava when the wolf paused to listen to him.  At least she seemed to realize they needed to talk to each other, unlike the girl on her back. “Everyone, this is Ellis.  Ellis, this is, uh . . . well that’s Rayla, and that’s Runaan, Andromeda, Ram, Skor, Callisto, and also Corvus.  He’s new.  The rest of them we met when they . . . uh.  Broke into our castle trying to kill Ezran.”

They all paused for a moment and Ellis looked around at the elves in sudden confusion and concern.  Ezran suppressed a flash of irritation at his brother for his terrible explanations.  He didn’t have to lead with that! “But we’re past that now,” He said quickly. “They’re our friends.”

With that, the concern melted immediately from Ellis’ face and she was back to beaming at them.  She flipped upside down on Ava’s back to grin at Rayla. “People meet in so many interesting ways!” 

“So, where do we find this miracle healer?” Rayla asked with a smile, as Runaan knelt in front of the wolf with a more serious expression.  He reached for the collar around the wolf’s neck and Ezran met her gaze, the wolf suddenly realizing something and rumbling when he touched it, lifting the stone where he could see it. 

“The truth is, I never found her - she found us.” Ellis said. “We were hiding in a big twisty hollow tree, up near the rim.”

Of course it was up near the top.  Ezran sighed softly. 

“I’ll get us to that tree, the healer will find us there, and she’ll save the egg!” The girl said brightly. 

“And maybe she can help your hands,” Ezran said hopefully. 

“Don’t worry about our hands.  The egg is all that matters now.” Ram said firmly. 

Runaan hummed softly. “I suppose it does not matter much, as our destination remains the same, but I feel this is important to share.  There is likely . . . there is no miracle healer.  The woman this girl - Ellis - encountered was most likely the Guardian of the Nexus.”

“But wait, that doesn’t make any sense,” Callum argued. “We can see that she has four legs now!  I thought moon magic couldn’t do that kind of stuff.”

The wolf whined, and Ezran met her eyes.  She shifted her weight off the leg, pawing at nothing, and he got the sense she felt no weight from it, though it supported her when she stepped back down.  His eyes widened with understanding. “The leg isn’t real,” He blurted out, aware of almost everyone turning to look at him. “It’s just an illusion, isn’t it?  Ava - Ava said so.”

Runaan’s snow-white brows shot towards his hairline as he replied. “Yes, it is.  The collar gives the illusion substance with the gemstone in it.  It is a moonstone etched with the moon rune.  The leg is solid enough to touch, to support her weight, but she likely feels no weight from it, either, and I would wager she’s never injured it again, either, or suffered from the paw being too cold.  That would be too complicated an illusion to maintain without conscious thought.”

“How did you know that?” Callum asked suspiciously, zeroed in on Ezran, and Ezran scowled at him.

“I told you, I can understand animals.” He said, already grumpy from how many years Callum had spent telling him he was wrong.

Callum groaned. “Ezran, we’ve been over this, that’s not true!  Why are you always lying to people about it?”

“Boys,” Runaan said sharply, and Ezran bit the inside of his lip at how much he sounded like - like his dad.

Andromeda frowned. “Wait, have I missed something?  Ezran, you can communicate with the animals?”

“Can you believe this?” Callum said. “Come on, Ez.  Tell the truth.  The first time he did this, I asked him to prove it.  So Ezran said that a group of raccoons had told him there was a treasure hidden behind a waterfall!  But when I went behind the waterfall, did I find a treasure?”

Frustration burned in Ezran’s chest and he stared at the ground, clutching the straps of the backpack that held the egg. “No.” He grumbled bitterly. 

“But did my underwear get soaked?”

“Yes.”

“Case closed!”

“The raccoons were being mischievous!” Ezran protested. “I have since learned you cannot trust raccoons.”

“This is ridiculous.  See, this is why you can’t make friends.” Callum accused.

It was a familiar sore spot and Ezran just scowled at him, choosing not to point out how Callum couldn’t do it and Callum didn’t have any friends either, except for sort of Soren - less now that he was a full Crownguard - and Claudia.  And Callum wasn’t even the prince who had to deal with people lying all the time, since nobody expected him to be in charge of anything once he grew up.

“Callum!” Rayla, Runaan, and Andromeda all barked at once, and Callum actually flinched, and Ezran blinked at them with surprise as he felt someone kneel behind him and Skor’s hand landed on his shoulder protectively. 

“Back off,” Rayla warned.

“That’s quite enough,” Runaan said, at the same time as Andromeda said “That’s enough!” He shot a look at both of them and was the only one to proceed. “I admit that the ability is . . . rare, and I have never heard of it on this side of the border, but . . . tales exist in Xadia of folk capable of understanding the thoughts of animals around them.  It is not impossible, though I am surprised by it occurring here of all places.”

Ezran blinked up at him in amazement. “You believe me?”

Runaan smiled at him, his often cold teal eyes gentle this time. “Yes.  And if this is the response you receive for being honest about it, I do understand why it has not come up before.” He shot Callum a harsher look, raising one eyebrow at him. 

Callisto made a short noise of realization. “Back on the boat, when ye said Bait wanted t’ know if I liked animals - you actually did mean Bait, didn’t you?” They asked in a slightly awed voice.

Ezran nodded, a little ashamed. “I knew you wouldn’t believe me, but I had to ask.  Bait’s a good judge of character.  He liked your answer.” 

The elf smiled at him almost sadly. “I’m glad.”

“So you’re saying that this whole time . . . it was real?” Callum said skeptically.

“Yep.” Ezran said, pouting at him, only partially on purpose.  It had been years since he talked to anyone about this.  No one believed him!  Callum stood with him on most things but this he’d had to keep entirely to himself, because even Callum had told him he was crazy. 

To his surprise, Callum’s shoulders dropped, and his face went serious as he looked down for a minute before looking up at Ezran. “Then . . . I think I owe you an apology, Ezran.”

“Well . . . at least one.” Ezran said, hugging Bait.

“I’m sorry I didn’t believe you.  I promise I’ll never doubt you again.” Callum swore with his hand over his heart. 

Ezran narrowed his eyes at him. “Do you really mean it?”

“I really do.” Callum promised.

Ezran smiled, mischief and a desire for some small vengeance blooming in his heart. “Then you have to do the thing.”

“Here?” Callum glanced at the elves, Corvus, and Ellis. “Now?”

Ezran grinned wider, made his eyes as wide and cute as possible, and nodded wordlessly.

To his delight, Callum just looked at him for a minute before heaving a great sigh and starting to do it.  Ezran clapped a beat for him even as he started laughing, the elves shifting apart to give his brother room to bounce around for the sake of - “Callum’s famous jerkface dance!”

When he looked around at the others, he couldn’t help laughing at the varying reactions.  Ram, Corvus, and Rayla all looked more confused than anything.  Andromeda had both hands covering her mouth but her grin had reached her eyes and her shoulders were shaking as if with laughter.  Runaan appeared mostly stoic, watching Callum’s dance with one raised brow, but Ezran thought he detected a glimmer of a smile pulling at his mouth.  Ellis was just blinking with fascination.  Skor was shaking his head but he was smiling, as if amused in spite of himself, and Callisto was visibly biting their lip to keep from laughing. 

“Knees higher!  Knees higher!” Ezran heckled just to be a brat, and Callum actually did it, started lifting his knees higher, and this was why they had the jerkface dance to begin with.  It was hard to stay mad after Callum apologized when he did something this silly to prove he meant it!

“So, not that this isn’t hilarious, and super adorable,” Ellis said. “But who’s the Guardian, if she’s not a miracle healer who saved my Ava?”

Runaan glanced at the other elves and sighed, rubbing his forehead. “I suppose we have another human guest on this little mission for the time being.” He said wearily. “The Guardian is an elf, a mage left behind to guard the Moon Nexus . . . a place of great power, once the center of Moonshadow elven society, and the greatest concentration of moon magic in the world.  I will explain further as we walk.  It is best we keep moving.  The sooner we reach the peak, the better for the egg.”
