Mostly spoiler free summary of my viewing experience
#The boy and the heron#how do you live#studio ghibli#ghibli#in all honesty that movie was legitimately so fantastic and im like changed as a person#Story wise as well! It hits really hard if you know a bit about miyazaki and his legacy. Its a very personal movie i think#And you can feel it in every aspect#The eng dub voice actors were really good as well and the animation was beautiful as always#Also really loved the tone!!! The story really relied a bit on the use of negative space in both sound and pacing and i enjoyed that alot#in conclusion go read a article about miyazaki and his son and then go watch the movie it’s probably going to be one of my favorites#image id in alt

People when a character is aromantic or aromantic coded: Wowie! They’re aroACE! Because they aren’t interested in romance! Look at how aroace they are!
People when a character is aroace or aroace coded: Isn’t it cool that this character is asexual? Asexual icon! They’re such great asexual representation :)
#aro#aromantic#ace#asexual#aroace#alloaro#it feels like there’s this weird mindset of#if a character is aro then they MUST be ace too#and if they’re aroace then the ace part is all that matters!#and of course aplatonicism is never even mentioned as a possibility in fandom spaces (even with characters like Saiki who is apl coded af)#hell. even with real life people who have come out as aromantic#if someone comes out as aromantic they’re assumed to be asexual as well#and if someone is openly aroace it’s very common that people emphasize the ace part over the aro part#and while I get that some people do talk more about their asexuality than their aromanticism#it’s still weird to me that like#for example#Yasmin Benoit is one of the most prolific aromantic activists AND one of the most prolific asexual activists#yet I rarely ever see people mention that she’s aromantic or aroace. Everyone always just says “oh she’s asexual” and leaves it at that#her aromantic activism seems to just get ignored even with how much of it she’s done#when trying to find news sources talking about aromanticism for a research project about half of them were interviews#with Yasmin Benoit! she’s done so much work for the aromantic community#yet even in her Wikipedia article which describes her as an “asexual and aromantic activist” in the very first sentence#the section on her activism doesn’t include the words aromantic or aromanticism even ONCE.#like. yeah she does emphasize her asexuality a lot more than her aromanticism. but her aromantic activism should be acknowledged too

every time anyone that's even slightly critical of C3 calmly writes a post that's longer than 750 words in an attempt to unpack what they feel is not working in the campaign or what's happening in the fandom, there's a rash of its defenders going "why are the haters always writing these long posts all the time, we don't need anyone to be writing novels, why is the post so long. it's so ridiculous that anyone is writing essays."
personally, especially if I was trying to position myself as having intelligent and complex opinions and capable of paying attention to episodes that are five hours long on a weekly basis, I would not admit I thought 1.5k words was dissertation length.
it's especially funny because many of the same people keep stamping their feet that critics never explain their perspectives or stances, then they're mockingly dismissive when doing so doesn't fit into a tweet.
not to make it sound grave, but it's anti-intellectual, it's simplistic. above all: it's juvenile, childish, asking to be treated as a child. wah, so silly anyone could possibly have a meaningful thought that requires enough space it doesn't fit on my phone screen at once.
#For the record. This post is 200 words. 750 words is generally three pages. 1.5k words is standard feature article in journalistic writing.#No wonder the cutesy “she's so silly. she's a girlfailure. [babytalk version of every character's name]” took off in those spaces. Children#No wonder it feels like only a handful of people write meta in defense of C3 or positively about it. Many of its defenders are like this.#I very rarely agree with what people write about C3's themes or construction or arc but at least those people write.#Unlike this sort. Who have a negative reaction whenever a post can't fit into a tweet thread.#No wonder the fandom discussion is of such poor quality this campaign.#Critical Role things#CR discourse

"-and if they show signs of any of these symptoms. DO. NOT. COME. This is a highly contagious illness and they should be quarantined immediately. In fact, you yourself will get sick."
"Is it really that contagious?"
"Ms. Poppy, it is so contagious that it shuts down entire schools."
"Oh my..."
"So quarantine is very important, okay? Your child may return 3 days after their symptoms go away. Anymore questions? ...no? Okay, that will be all, thank you for your time--"
"Wait! What about the other families? The uh, aliens?" blurts out Ms. Poppy
"Are you asking if they can catch it too?"
"Yes."
"While this virus has not been yet tested for that I don't believe so. Testing with other diseases and illnesses show us that 99.9% of them are unable to be passed between humans and other species. Your child's fellow classmates should be safe as should your co-workers."
.
Quarantine is still in effect. Stay inside. If you or your loved one are experiencing any symptoms call the med bay and have the infected wait outside of your living quarters. You will be escorted as soon as possible. Most common symptoms are nausea, fever, vomiting, and dehydration. Repeat. Quarantine is still in effect. Stay inside.
The halls go silent again. On a work day this was unheard of. The wide halls should be full. Full of bodies, full of chatter, full of activity. Now they are empty and quiet. Not even the hum of the AC was present. The only noise the humans heard was their own breathing and the soft crunches of the discarded masks they stepped on.
The shorter one peered into each room they passed and in each one saw not single living being. A automated pilot waved at them from the control centre and they slowly waved back.
"How much longer until we reach the nearest station?"
<15 hours> it replied.
"...how many are sick now?"
<50% of the entire ship are infected. 15% of them are almost recovered now>
"...how many became infected from the young-"
"Don't. Ignore that question." interrupts the taller.
<Understood> the automated pilot goes back to steering the ship and the humans leave.
..
"I can't wait till we reach the station." groans a bearded human.
"How much do you think we made with all this overtime?" jokes another.
Silence and unamused looks are his only response.
"...sorry. I'm trying to lighten the mood."
"We know it's just...too soon." the bearded man motioned to the short and tall human sitting in the back.
"Oh shit-guys, I-I'm sorry. You know I didn't mean anything by it right?"
"We know Reese." the taller one sighed.
"A-and you guys know that this wasn't your fault right? I mean there was no way you could know-hell the fucking coalition didn't even know!"
"..."
"He's right you know. I read over the papers and there is no way you are at fault. Either of you...Kim. Look at me."
"But I should have canceled the fucking party!" the chair slams to the ground as the human shouts. "I should have just canceled the party! I knew that there was a chance that Oscar and Theo were still contagious, but I still let them come considering that they were the only humans!"
"Kim, I could have canceled the party too-"
"I'm the one who knows just how contagious it is though Max!! The place I worked at before shut down for a whole week because of this, I should've known." Kim whimpered red faced.
"But you didn't!" Max retorted. "You didn't, I didn't, and the goddamn coalition didn't! No one knew because they didn't test it yet because we all thought that it was biologically impossible."
"..."
"You are not at fault for Fenrir, Calis, or anyone else getting sick. Now quit blaming yourself, eat your damn food, and lets get back to work. We still have another 12 hours till we reach the station."
"Max, that's too harsh-" Kim wiped her face and ate while Max rubbed her back.
...
"First mate Calis, good to see you on your feet again."
"Yes, well, I was going mad from my mate and young treating me like I was made of star dust."
"You say that like its a bad thing!"
"It is if its for more than a week." they smirked.
"So...what was it? Enemy attack? Chemical spill? What was it that made half the ship so ill?"
"Norovirus. A common human illness that is incredibly contagious."
"...I thought that illnesses couldn't be-"
"We all did. But somehow this virus did. Not only that but it's symptoms and effects are worse in most other species."
"You said it was common though?"
"Yes. It is. Millions get it every year on Earth."
"Well. It seems I'll be taking Earth off my list of planets I wish to visit."
#humans are space orcs#humans are space oddities#humans in space#the adventures of kim and max running a space child centre#sometimes I blame myself for things that happen to the kids at work when in reality I could have done nothing to prevent it#kids be crazy and accident prone#also read an article about norovirus and was like oh yeah that plagued the school for like weeks#also been introduced to infection aus so I thought i'd try something like that

Space, the final frontier.
That is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to explore
The strange new worlds of our outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a five-year mission
And, by opposing, end it. To go—to seek,
Once more; and by “to seek” to say we find
The new life and new civilizations
Where man has gone not: 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To go, to seek;
To seek, perchance to find—ay, there's the rub:
For in these voyages what dreams may come,
When we have boldly gone whence we have not,
Must give us pause—there's the respect
That makes a mission of so long a life.
For who would bear the Enterprise of time,
The starship’s wrong, admirals’ contumely,
The pangs of dispriz'd love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office, and the spurns
That patient merit of th'unworthy treks,
When he himself might make his voyage on
With a bare warp core? Who would tribbles bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the hope of something to be found,
The undiscover'd country, from whose bourn
We travel and return, puzzling our will,
And makes us wish to solve those ills we have
And fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience makes explorers of us all,
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is glistened o'er with the stars of thought,
And Enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents warp ahead
And seize the name of action.

Kharkiv's Faktor-Druk printing house has resumed operation after being severely damaged by a Russian missile strike on May 23. The facility is only partially restored, and they have shifted focus to printing essential educational materials such as textbooks for the new school year.
According to Tatiana Hryniuk, the general director, damages from the Russian missile strike exceed €10 million, with losses still being calculated. The attack claimed seven lives and destroyed almost 100,000 books.

more queer houses!
Klovharu Summer Cottage by Raili Pietilä for Tove Jansson and Tuulikki Pietilä
1964-1965, Klovharu Island, Porvoo Archipelago, Finland
Tove Jansson and Tuulikki Pietilä spent every summer in this cottage for nearly 30 years. Tove chose the site by camping on various places on Klovharu, and they designed it with Tuulikki's sister-in-law, based on a fisherman's cabin on the island of Pellinge. It lacked electricity and running water, and if guests arrived, Tove and Tuulikki would give up the bed and camp outside. the cottage is a single room, with a cellar underneath--for food storage and a small sauna--built into the rock. the cottage is now an artist residency--with the original interiors preserved--but can be visited during one week in July. More about the cottage. Interview with Raili Pietilä. Tuulikki's films.
Hangover House by William Alexander Levy for Richard Haliburton
1937, Laguna Beach, California, USA
Hangover House, or Halliburton House, was designed by William Alexander Levy (he later dropped Levy from his name) for celebrity explorer Richard Halliburton and his ghostwriter and lover Paul Mooney. Supposedly, by the time the house was completed Halliburton and Mooney's relationship had expanded to include a third: Alexander himself. The house was built of concrete, with large public rooms and three small bedrooms, one for each of the men. Sadly, Halliburton and Mooney were lost at sea in 1939, and Halliburton's family sold the house and buried all references to his queerness. The house still stands today and is a private residence. More images here.
Azurest South by Amaza Lee Meredith 1938, Ettrick, Virginia, USA

Azurest South might be the first International Style home to have been built in Virginia, and instead of in a wealthy white enclave like you might expect, it's located just off of the campus of Virginia State University, an Historic Black College/University. it was built by pioneering artist, architect, and educator Amaza Lee Meredith for herself and her partner, Dr. Edna Meade Colson. colson was the head of the education department at VSU, and meredith was head of the art department (which she had created in 1930). we know from her scrapbooks that meredith was looking at european designs and experimenting with them in the house. the result was something unlike everything around it--flat roofs, glass bricks, bright paint and tilework inside--an antidote to traditionally conservative virginia architecture. azurest south today belongs to the vsu alumni association. it is not open to visit, but has received increased attention and grant funding over the past few years, so it may well be someday! More about Meredith as architect. More about Azurest South. And more! (additionally, if you're near richmond va there's an exhibition about meredith & azurest south at the institute for contemporary art until march 9 2025)
Six Acres by Mary Imrie and Jean Wallbridge 1954-1957, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Mary Imrie and Jean Wallbridge were partners in work and life, establishing the first all-female architectural firm in Canada. in the 50s, they built a house to serve as their home and office along the banks of the north saskatchewan river and called it "six acres" after the size of the lot. they traveled enthusiastically and widely (pdf) and were avid outdoorspeople. like a lot of women architects at this point in the 20th century, they were largely relegated to residential commissions, which they found frustrating. that said, they gained a reputation for helping clients who were struggling with construction costs by encouraging gatherings of friends and neighbors to assist with the work, something they had hands-on experience with, having assisted in the building of their own home. the house is still standing and is now the office of the alberta land stewardship centre. timeline of their lives and careers. more about the house itself.
Finella by Raymond McGrath for Mansfield Duval Forbes c. 1850, renovated 1929, Cambridge, England, UK

Mansfield Forbes was an english don at clare college, cambridge. in 1928 he leased a victorian home called "the yews" and spent the next year working with Raymond McGrath (previous seen here) to transform it into a modern fairyland, named in tribute of Finella, a 10th century Pictish queen. the interiors were a celebration of new materials--there were floors made of induroleum (wood and asbestos powder), walls painted with iridescent cellulose paint, something called copper plymax (??), and the entry hall had a vaulted ceiling covered in glass panels backed with silver leaf. forbes intended it to be a gathering place of sympathetic minds, to host salons in celebration of modern art and architecture in a setting a queer and future-looking as he himself was. unfortunately, he vastly overspent in outfitting Finella, and when he died suddenly in 1935, the contents of the house were auctioned off. Finella is still part of Cambridge and houses fellows of gonville & caius college. the college recently restored the hall, which can apparently be toured on specific days. interior photos from 1929 and 2004.
112 Charles Street by Eleanor Raymond 1868, renovated 1922, Boston, Massachusetts, USA
When Eleanor Raymond began work on 112 Charles Street, it had recently had the front 10 feet sliced off to allow for the widening of the street, so her renovation was essentially a reimagining. eleanor designed the house for her mother, who had her own apartment, as well as eleanor herself, her sister rachel, and her partner ethel powers. the three of them shared a floor. powers wrote for the magazine House Beautiful (and would go on to be its editor) and featured the home three times. in the largest feature on its interiors, she emphasized that since it was a home of three business women, it needed to be "self running." raymond would go on to design and build much more modernist houses, and the conservative appearance of this one might be due to how early in her career it was (she graduated from her architecture program in 1919), but i think it's more likely that she was aware of the necessity of appearing somewhat inconspicuous in her surroundings, as a queer woman with a career. read more about her work here. and here.
#queer architecture#long post#most of my sources are the things i linked to with the exception of finella#finella i learned about from an article in the journal of british studies#she also authored the chapter about it in the book 'Queer Spaces'#happy to send the article along to any interested parties#hangover house i read about in a different article which i can also hunt up if requested

Danny reveals phantom to his parents. They immediately jump ships to support Danny. That is their baby. Why would they think he was lying? Clearly they let confirmation bias cloud their heads. They have non bias research to conduct!
Unfortunately for them. The GIW does not like this change. Clearly the fentons have gone crazy. They must be mad scientist! The GIW of course reports them mainly to get them out of the way. Can’t have people spreading propaganda that ghost Ms are sentient. They can’t have that.
Maddie and Jack don’t come in easily. Instead they flee. Not letting thier kids get hurt. Of course they locked down the portal before they left. All they needed to do was get set up in a new city. Keep the kids safe after all.
Gotham was to obvious. Why wouldn’t they flee to ecto rich environment. Danny would be to obsessed with hunting down Superman in metropolis. Ever since the reveal Danny had been letting his ghostly instincts out more and more. The whole alien thing would cause to much obsession.
Besides. Technically they were wanted by the government. Couldn’t draw attention with Danny stalking the supers. Which whatever. Maddie and Jack would fight them if it came down to it.
They ultimately decided on central city.
There is enough that happens there to keep eyes off them. They absolutely totally could stay low to the ground. They couldn’t hide out with any relatives. Plus if it came to it. They were certain they could at least talk to the flash before anything violent occurred.
Maybe he would even listen.
For now. They would just prioritize Danny’s and jazzs safety.
#dpxdc#good parents jack and maddie#they will protect their kids#if Danny tells them about Ellie#that’s just another kid to add to the family#the Giw is a government organization#they reported the fentons as mad scientist#and put a warrant out for them#they used the constant ghost attacks the Fenton parents lead as proof#plus the property destruction#they will avoid places with actual aliens#Danny has a space obsession#jack and Maddie have released new reports and scientific articles#once that directly contradict what they and before#no more bias for them#Maddie does think If it came down to it she could get the flash to listen#but would rather stay in hiding#safer for the kids#Fenton parents will protect the family#dcxdp prompt
