Description:
[‘When the Daily Punctilio declares Klaus Baudelaire the City's Most Eligible Bachelor, despite his having two committed partners, he thinks he's the most annoyed a person could be.
Turns out that prize goes to Carmelo Squalor, who, as the adorable son of the City's fifth most important financial advisor, believes the title should have gone to him.
How throwing a gigantic party and aggressively inviting Klaus to attend will solve this problem, he doesn't know. But he knows it will.

Or: bi, poly Klaus Baudelaire does an enemies to lovers speedrun with gay transmasc Carmelo Squalor, formerly known as Carmelita Spats.’]
{My opinion: This is a hilarious fic in which the characters feel real and there is more lgbt+ rep than I could have hoped for! I mean, there’s bi Klaus, trans Carmelo, they/them Sunny…and that’s far from all. Anyway, really funny fic, go and do yourself a favour by reading it+letting the author know what you think!💛}
[If there is a fic you think is underrated then please lmk in one way or another and I’ll include it in next week’s ‘underrated fic’ rec! Also it’s 100% fine to ask for your own fic to be recommended!]

never grow up
violet bridgerton x youngest! daughter
bridgerton siblings x younger! sibling
pt1 dont need to read pt1 to read this but it'll give you background understanding
synopsis; Through scenes of Isadora's first moments—her siblings meeting her for the first time, her first word, first steps, and precious family outings—their unbreakable bond deepens. In the bustling life of Mayfair, Isadora remains Violet’s constant companion, offering comfort and unwavering support at her mother's side, embodying the enduring love that holds their family together.
word count; 1k
master list
a/n; thank you so much @kitkat27 for this idea, i had a lot of fun writing this!
once again, kinda proof read, kinda not
Your little hand's wrapped around my finger
And it's so quiet in the world tonight
Your little eyelids flutter 'cause you're dreamin'
So I tuck you in, turn on your favorite night light
In the dimly lit room of Bridgerton House, Violet held her newborn daughter for the first time. Isadora's tiny fingers curled around her mother's, and Violet felt an overwhelming rush of love and relief. Her heart ached with the absence of Edmund, but in Isadora's delicate features, she saw hope and a future.
The Bridgerton children quietly entered the room, their eyes wide with wonder as they approached their mother and the new addition to the family.
"She's so tiny," whispered Daphne, leaning in to get a closer look.
"Can I hold her?" asked Anthony, his voice soft yet protective.
Violet smiled, tears in her eyes. "Of course, Anthony. Just be gentle."
As Anthony cradled Isadora in his arms, the rest of the siblings gathered around, each taking a turn to hold their baby sister, their faces filled with awe and love.
To you, everything's funny, You got nothing to regret
I'd give all I have honey, If you could stay like that
At the age of 10 months, Isadora's first word filled the Bridgerton household with joy. Violet was in the drawing room, playing with Isadora on a plush rug, surrounded by her older siblings.
"Mama," Isadora said, her voice a soft, sweet sound that made Violet's heart soar.
"Oh, Isa! You said 'Mama'! You are so clever!" Violet exclaimed, gathering her daughter into her arms and peppering her face with kisses.
Eloise clapped her hands in delight. "Clearly she’s taking after me"
Colin laughed, ruffling Isadora's hair. "You think quite highly of yourself"
Oh, darlin', don't you ever grow up
Don't you ever grow up
Just stay this little
Isadora's first steps were a family affair. At one year old, she stood unsteadily in the middle of the nursery, her siblings forming a supportive circle around her. Violet knelt a few feet away, her arms open wide.
"Come to Mama, Isa," Violet encouraged, her voice filled with warmth.
With a determined look on her face, Isadora took a tentative step forward, then another, and another, until she tumbled into Violet's waiting arms.
"You did it, my darling!" Violet cheered, hugging Isadora tightly.
Hyacinth danced around them, her excitement palpable. "Isa walked! Isa walked!"
Oh, darlin', don't you ever grow up
Don't you ever grow up
It could stay this simple
When Isadora was three, the Bridgerton family prepared for an outing to the park. Violet, with Isadora’s small hand firmly clasped in hers, led the way. Isadora, at three years old, was a petite figure with wide, curious eyes that took in the world with a gentle wonder.
The Bridgerton children followed, a lively group that drew admiring glances from passersby. Each sibling had their own distinct personality, but they all shared a fierce protectiveness over their youngest sister.
“Look, Mama!” Hyacinth exclaimed, pointing to a beautiful flower bed bursting with vibrant blooms. “Aren’t they lovely?”
Violet smiled. “They are, indeed. Spring is such a wonderful time to be in the park.”
The children eagerly ran ahead to explore, their laughter echoing through the air. Isadora stayed close to Violet, her little hand never leaving her mother’s.
As they walked, Violet pointed out various sights to her youngest daughter. “See those tall trees, Isa? They’ve been here for many, many years.”
Isadora nodded, her eyes wide with interest. “They’re very tall, Mama.”
“They are,” Violet agreed. “Just like your brothers and sisters. But you’ll grow tall and strong too, my love.”
They reached a large, open grassy area where the older children had already begun a game. Isadora watched them with a mix of curiosity and caution.
“Would you like to play with them, Isa?” Violet asked, gently encouraging her.
Isadora hesitated, then shook her head. “I like being with you, Mama.”
Violet knelt down and kissed her daughter’s forehead. “And I like having you with me, my sweet girl. But it’s also fun to run and play with your brothers and sisters. Would you like to try? I’ll be right here.”
Isadora looked at her siblings, who were having so much fun, and finally nodded. “Okay, Mama.”
Violet called out to the others. “Gregory, Hyacinth, can you include Isadora in your game?”
Benedict, with his infectious energy, bounded over and scooped Isadora up, twirling her around. “Come on, Isa! Join us!”
Hyacinth joined in, her laughter ringing out. “We’ll be gentle, Isa. It’s lots of fun!”
I won't let nobody hurt you
Won't let no one break your heart
Isadora giggled as Gregory set her down, and soon she was running alongside her siblings, her earlier hesitation forgotten. She might not have been as quick or agile as the others, but their encouragement and patience made her feel included and loved.
Violet watched with a contented smile, her heart full as she saw Isadora’s face light up with joy. Despite the sorrow and challenges they had faced, moments like this reminded her of the strength and love that bound the Bridgerton family together.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the park, the family gathered their belongings and made their way back home. Isadora, tired from the day's excitement, was carried by Anthony, her head resting against his shoulder.
Violet walked beside them, her heart full. Despite the trials they had faced, days like this reminded her of the strength and love that bound them together. With Isadora’s quiet presence always near, Violet felt a sense of peace and gratitude that carried her through each day.
And no one will desert you
Just try to never grow up
At four, Isadora was ready for her first schooling lessons. Her mother with her to support her on this significant day. Violet, holding Isadora’s hand, walked her to the schoolroom where her governess awaited.
“You’ll do wonderfully, Isa,” Violet assured her, smoothing a stray curl.
Isadora looked up with wide eyes. “Will you stay with me, Mama?”
Violet smiled and knelt down to her level. “I’ll be right outside, my love. You’re going to learn so many exciting things.”
Gregory and Hyacinth peeked in, waving enthusiastically. “Good luck, Isa!” they chorused.
Never grow up

SO you like the triplets?? Do you have any specific hcs for them?
Mine is that they had cats back when their house wasn't ashes
And Isadora would be really good at writing/composing songs, considering the way she enjoys couplets and poetry in general
While Duncan maybe plays the piano in my mind, something classical, not the violin for SURE after the academy
Quigley would mayhaps play something more grungy-ey like guitar, drums, in that area, perhaps bass
Anyway :]
YESS I LOVE the Quagmiressss
~Cats~
They absolutely would have cats,you are so right about that. 💯 I am adopting your hc 😎👍
I feel like they would be all black cats too, the sort that are considered “unlucky” bc it’d go well with the Quagmires’ eery vibe ✨also Isadora would really like the witch vibe of it. Honestly though I can see all three of them liking cats, Duncan especially for some reason, although he’d definitely get a bit annoyed with them when they walk over his typewriter mid article :’) 📰 🐈⬛
They’d get to name a cat each; Isadora calls hers ‘Lord Byron’ after a gothic poet she admires, Duncan calls his ‘Dorothy Paw-ker’ (and Isa calls him cringe) , and Quigley can’t decide on a name for a really long time, but eventually he settles on calling his cat ‘Rocky’ bc of how it jumps onto rocks beside him when he goes out exploring, and also bc of how the creature’s fur gets all fluffed up in a messy ‘rockstar’ way, according to Quigs.
~Music~
Regarding your hc that Duncan plays the piano, yeah I can see that :] my reasoning for it is 🎹
1- Vibes.
2- Duncan is a journalist. It’s confirmed that in the asoue timeline typewriters r used. Typewriters have keys which need to be pressed. PIANOS also have keys which need to be pressed…. Aaand BAM. T’is basically canon now✨
However, I can equally see Duncan’s only musical success being playing the ‘triangle’. I just think it’d be hilarious if his siblings were both musically talented meanwhile he’s just like *riiiiing* “hey, hey, guys. Look at what I can do🙂!” *riiiing* (<Duncan came up with hilariously dumb ideas in TAA so this is fitting I think✨.) {one such idea being to kick the fake Sunny around in a circle bc that would not be suspicious at allllllll}
I think Isadora might have played the violin pre-canon, which made Nero’s performances 10x worse and permanently ruined the instrument for her 😟 (Fun fact!!!!! There’s a violin in the Quagmires’ bedroom in the Netflix adaptation!)
Quigley playing the guitar is a cool hc, especially since that’s an instrument that he could play on camping trips. I can see him whipping a guitar out to play riptide tbh🎶.
Not exactly a hc, BUT, Quigley canonically plays the accordion in Netflix canon! In TSS he mentions to Violet+Klaus that he read a book “by L.Snicket” on how to play the accordion 🪗, also, in the living room of the Quagmire Mansion there’s an accordion in the background! Moment of appreciation to the amount of detail put into the set design of the Quagmire mansion, I may dislike the Netflix portrayals of Isadora and Duncan, but the set design of their house was fire (pun intended 🫢).
~Some random hcs I have for them: ~
Drink preferences:
Isadora: Coffee. Not so much for the flavour as for the caffeine. She has horrible insomnia and needs the caffeine to get through the day. She enjoys tea when she’s writing poetry though, especially with a dash of vinegar in it.
Duncan: Green tea 🍵, or sprite if he’s feeling adventurous.
Quigley: Hot chocolate overflowing with marshmallows. Hc that the reason the snowscouts had a sickening amount of marshmallows in the books is bc they were.the.only.thing Quigs packed.
Favourite seasons:
Isadora: Autumn. 🍂 there’s sooo much potential for poetry. Also. Autumn has Halloween in it and Isa is hella goth. 🕷️ 🕸️
Duncan: Winter. It’s cold which means the chances of him being forced outside are reduced. He gets 0.01 seconds of sunlight and fresh air per day on average and is perfectly content to keep it that way. ❄️
Quigley: Summer. It’s the best time for exploring in his opinion, since the mud is usually less wet+absorbent, so he’s less likely to get stuck in it. ☀️ (Also, he’s not a big fan of the colder months bc they remind him of his time alone and freezing in the Hinterlands 🏔️)
Other hcs I enjoy 🌟 :
-Quigley is dyslexic (I made a whole post abt my theory+am very proud of it :] )
-Post-canon Duncan+Isadora develop extreme claustrophobia bc of when they were kidnapped.
-Isadora is a trans girl 🏳️⚧️
-Isadora is sapphic 🏳️🌈
-Isadora is goth
-Duncan is bisexual (his name is a reference to ‘Isadora Duncan’, a famous bisexual dancer who died tragically)
- Isadora+Duncan were hyperfixated on dance when they were younger (I got this hc from a fic called ‘Imperfect’ by Connie @unfortunate-stranger-losers )
-Quigley wears ponchos (I misremembered it as him wearing a poncho rather than Violet in TSS, but I really like the image of him in a poncho so I’m keeping it as a hc)
-Isadora loses an eye in the eagle fight
-All three of them are autistic+have ADHD
Thanks for the ask!!!! I enjoyed hearing ur hcs +writing abt mine :D 💜💜💜

Hi! 👋 Could you please do number 10 of Dunklaus for the Drabble asks? :)
I’ve been laughing maniacly at my keyboard sinse I got this. So thank you! And yes.
I don’t have a title yet, but you requested it so if you have any suggestions please tell me :)
Rating: General audiences Pairings: Klaus Baudelaire/Duncan Quagmire, background Violet Baudelaire/Isadora Quagmire Charecters: Klaus Baudelaire, Duncan Quagmire, Violet Baudelaire, Isadora Quagmire, Sunny Baudelaire
Ever since the Baudelaire siblings arrived at Prufrock prep, they had become very good friends with the Quagmire triplets. This was good news for both sets of siblings, seeing that neither had had any close friends in a very long time. They would always sit together at meals, usually playing something like truth or dare, or twenty questions. Today they were playing kiss marry kill, although instead of naming three people, they would only name one, as they did not know many people at the school and would likely run out of people after two turns otherwise.
“Okay, kiss marry or kill... Violet!” Klaus said.
“Oh, that’s easy. Said Isadora. “Kiss and marry.”
“I don’t think you can do tha-” But before Violet could finish, her girlfriend had already leaned in and planted a small kiss on her lips.
“Too late!”
“Okay you win, it’s my turn now.” She said. “Duncan! Kiss marry or kill....” She paused a moment, looking around the table to see who’s name she should say next before giving Duncan a devious smirk.
“Klaus.”
Both Klaus and Duncan Immediantly flushed bright red.
“Oh! O-oh, um, I would....” He stopped to think for a minute. “Well, I- I wouldn’t kill him, I guess- I know. I know I wouldn’t kill him, obviously.”
“I- it’s fine if you choose kill if you want.” Klaus said shyly. “I’ll still be alive.”
“But I don’t want to kill you.”
“So that leaves kiss or marry.” Violet said smiling.
“Oh- ya right. Ummm......”
“You don’t have to worry too much about it Duncan.” She added. “it’s just hypothetical.”
“Ya, I don’t really care.” Said Klaus.
“Okay then, um.... marry? No, kiss. Wait- actually... what were my options again?”
“Kiss or marry.”
“Right.” He paused. “I guess... not marry- not that I wouldn’t want to marry him, I would- I mean If I had too. I wouldn’t not marry him, but we’ve only known each other for a few weeks so no, I don’t choose marry.”
“No, that makes sense. I wouldn’t choose marry- I mean I could, I might-”
“So kiss?” Asked Violet.
“..... yes?”
There was an awkward silence for a moment...... Until it was broken by Isadora.
"Are you effing kidding me!?"
"Izzie!"
"What? I said effing, Sunny doesn't know what that means.”
“F!” Sunny yelled.
“Okay, I was wrong, she knows what it means.” Isadora admitted.“But seriously! You two have been like this ever since you met.”
“Like what?”
“Like that! You’re both just so awkward with each other, you’re always blushing, and worst of all, you’re always staring at each other when you think the other isn’t looking but then they look at you and you both look away immediantly wich way more suspicious than you think it is.” She told them. “It was kinda funny at first, but it’s starting to slowly drive me insane.”
“Plus, you’re always talking about oneanother.” Violet added.“Almost every time Klaus reads a book now he says it reminds him of Duncan. Once it was a book about snakes. He only thought of Duncan because it was the same color as his notebook.”
“And you can barely speak to each other because you overthink everything you say.” Isadora said, looking pointedly at her brother.
“And whenever you’re in the same room you bearly pay attention to literally anything else.” Violet pointed out.
“Sorry, what?” Asked Klaus.
“And I wasn’t going to say anything, but we both know how that turned out!” Said Isadora. “So please, for the sake of everyone's sanity, just. Admit. You like each other!”
“Get room!” Sunny agreed.
Then there was another awkward silence.......
“Aaaaanyways, I’m done with my lunch, so I’m gonna go get a drink. Violet, wanna come?”
“Sure, I think Sunny’s getting thirsty too anyways.” She said getting up. Once all three girls were gone, the boys just sat there awkwardly, trying to think of what you're supposed to say to your best after being yelled at by both of your sisters.
“So, that........ happened.” Duncan said, fidgeting with the edge of his sleeve.
“We don’t have to talk about it right now.”
“Okay.”
Klaus looked over to where the girls were standing,(and pretending they were getting water and not staring at the boys to see what happened) before turning to Duncan.
“Do... do you wanna talk about it later?” He asked.
“Uh, yeah, sure.” He smiled. They would talk about it later.
They did talk about It later.
Their sisters were right, and they never let them live it down.
The End!

She was thirteen and her birthday fell exactly halfway between her older sister and her younger brother. Behind her large cat's eye glasses, was a mind full of observations she'd made about the people around her. How did that girl walk? Where did that man have lunch? What was that woman hiding inside that trout? Chrissy kept these observations carefully cataloged in her brain, ready in case they ever proved useful. Unfortunately, all her observations didn't help her predict her life burning to the ground, but maybe, they can help her and her siblings move forward.

Can you do an Isadora Quagmire x fem reader where the reader is a Poe.
Prufrock Friends (Isadora Quagmire X Poe!Reader)
Masterlist
Request Something!
Summary: (Y/n) Poe is about to start her first day at Prufrock Preparatory School. But she isn’t the only one, because 2 triplet orphans that moved in with her family are going to the same place.
A/N: We need more love for the girls omg yes, I hope you like it
***
I had said goodbye to my mom and my brothers Edgar and Albert and was now in the car, already waiting for the long drive to Prufrock Prep to be over. Soon Isadora and Duncan were shoved into the backseat with me, Isadora being in the middle, and we were off. Well, after my dad coughed into his handkerchief about a dozen times.
Isadora and Duncan were 2 triplets who had recently lost their parents and triplet brother Quigley in a fire that destroyed their home. So they had been living with us until my dad was told that they would be going to Prufrock Prep. This was just like with the Baudelaires, only the Baudelaires are being tossed between caretakers.
I was closer to Isadora, probably because we were both girls. Over the few days that she and her brother had stayed here, we had bonded over being the only girl in our families. It wasn’t uch, but it was something.
“So (Y/n), are you excited for Prufrock Prep?” Duncan leaned forward to ask me. Isadora looked at me as well with a smile.
“I guess. I’ve never been to a private school, so I don’t really know what to expect.” They nodded in agreement. Duncan went back to doing his own thing while Isadora continued to look at me.
“So,” she cleared her throat and got quiet, “Do you think there’s gonna be any cute boys?” I wasn’t really focused on boys at the moment. To be honest, I was more focused on Isadora. But I couldn’t let her know that, so I giggled along with her.
“Hopefully, that would make Prufrock more enjoyable.”
It had been an hour or so before we had finally made it to Prufrock. My dad sent us to the bench outside of the principal’s, waved at us, and left. What a nice send off.
“When do you think he’s gonna let us in?” I asked, referring to who I assumed was the principal playing his violin in his office. I don’t even know if you could call it playing.
The Quagmire triplets shrugged. I guess we would just have to wait and see.
***
It had been about a day since I had sat with the Quagmires on that bench while horrible violin music played in the background. We had our schedules and sleeping arrangements in order.
I was in the same class as Isadora and lived with 3 other people in a room.
Isadora and Duncan were living in a shack. But then they were moved to a broom closet when some new orphans came. I don’t know if that made their situation better or worse.
We were sitting in the cafeteria when 3 people asked if they could sit with us. It was the Baudelaires.
“Baudelaires?” I asked in excitement. The last I had heard of them, they ran away when Count Olaf had killed their newest guardian and tried to take them. Again.
“(Y/n)!” Klaus was the first to speak. I got up and hugged him tight, and them Violet and Sunny. We all sat down and I told them how much I missed them and vice versa.
“Oh!” I gestured to Isadora and Duncan, “These are the Quagmire triplets, Isadora and Duncan. They had been staying with us before we all came her to Prufrock.”
Isadora looked a little uncomfortable, but I couldn’t place my finger on why. But her and her brother introduced themselves, explained why their third triplet wasn’t there, and we all continued talking.
***
A day or two have passed and a lot has happened. Count Olaf was somehow able to get a job as a gym teacher and created a running program for orphans. He chose only the Baudelaires, most likely to get his hands on their fortune. He made them run for many hours in the night, and it was affecting their classwork. The Baudelaires were told if they didn’t pass their tests, which would take place in front of the whole school, they would be kicked out.
Which was why we were now in the library, formulating a plan. Isadora and Duncan would pretend to be Violet and Klaus and run for them and I would help Violet and Klaus study for their tests the next morning. Right now we were working on disguises for the Quagmires.
“How do I look?” Isadora nudged me and I turned to her. She had put a string with a bunch of little strings on it on her forehead to make it look like she had bangs. Personally, I liked her better without them. But for the sake of our situation, it was great.
“Great. Different. But like a good different. Not a bad different, very good.” I should just stop talking. She laughed.
“Thank you.” She smiled at me and I smiled back.
“Ok. All you have to do is run and not be suspicious.” Violet told the Quagmires and they nodded. We were all about to leave but I pulled Isadora back.
“Please be careful.” She nodded and kissed my cheek.
Oh my gosh, she kissed my cheek.
“I will.” Then she walked away to catch up with Duncan. I started walking with the Baudelaires.
“So,” Violet said as she and Klaus looked at me, “you and Isadora, huh?” They laughed as I groaned. This was gonna be a long night.

Another luminous library section
Warnings: blood, death, peril
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Milk can be a very dangerous thing. Unpasteurized milk, for instance, can carry bacteria. A gallon of milk is quite large and quite heavy and very painful if it is dropped on an unsuspecting foot. Once, I was chased down by a ravenous cow whilst wearing an outfit that mimicked the local grass patterns and had to hide in a remote convenience store.
Broken glass, while also dangerous, is lol more outwardly offensive and clear in its malicious intent. The two combined make a malevolent recipe for ice cream with broken glass in it, and poor Isadora Quagmire was lying right in the middle of it.
"Isadora!" Violet gasped. Rain was pouring through the broken glass and the wind outside was was whistling.
"What's going on?" Klaus shouted, half a question, half a plea. It was a good question.
Isadora slowly climbed to her feet, soaking and miserable. "We were under the house," she sighed. "I managed to get out but that watching the front door so I figured that this would be the next best way to get your attention."
As if on cue a rap on the door rang out through the house. The entire party realized their mistake all at once, for adrenaline can often erase such background noises like the sound of shattering glass as a gallon of milk goes sailing through a sunroof.
"Open up, it's your new neighbors," a female voice said.
"Shut up, Esmé. They're already on to us," Olaf said. "There's no need for the formalities."
As the children tried to hide Isadora in a closet, the door burst down.
"Urdub" Sunny whispered, which roughly translates to "oh no". "Oh no" is really the only reasonable reaction in this circumstance, for as Esmé and Olaf entered the chaos-strewn room everything fell silent. Esmé was wearing a hat in the shape of a large toad and was brandishing a rudimentary spear. Olaf had no weapon, but his eyes shone like they did when he knew he would already win.
If you have not already abandoned this tale, I beg of you to do so. No person deserves to be exposed to the gruesome events to follow, especially not little Sunny Baudelaire who had to witness Elmira Nettle slip on the milk that would ultimately be her undoing.
The fall itself was not fatal. However, Olaf seized the moment of confusion and grabbed a large shard of glass. The fiendish man stabbed Elmira in the gut, the aftermath creating a sickly pink mixture of milk and blood that could only be appealing to a vampire.
Running is a very hard thing to do, especially when you are carrying a baby, have just fallen through a large pane of glass, or are in a general state of shock and confusion. But fear is a powerful force, and, though the devilish duo were hot on their heels, the assortment of orphans arrived at the open doorway. And as his sisters and friend narrowly escaped, Klaus opened the lantern, leaving the room in darkness, and slammed the door behind him.
There are some words that people say that I cannot and will not repeat, and that generally mean some quite unpleasant things. Count Olaf and Esmé Squalor said many of these words that started with every letter of the English alphabet and probably some from the Greek and Russian alphabets as well. They were said very loudly and aggressively, and added a bit more stress to the already shocked and rushed children.
Duncan Quagmire was under a house, a sentence that I am sorry I have to say and hoping that I never have to say again. He was under a house and could not get out. He was in a cage, similar to that which the two triplets had been contained in at the bottom of a tall, dark, ersatz elevator shaft. It was barely large enough to contain two people.
Violet started to think of an invention to pry open the bars of the cage. But there were so few materials to work with, and steel is very hard to bend. Thankfully, the youngest Baudelaire had her own plans. Sunny was quite a strong baby. She could bite through almost anything, including the concrete walls of a cold and desolate elevator shaft with no elevator. But everyone, including little Sunny herself, was astounded when she began to bend the thick steel bars of Duncan's cage. There was no time to praise the terrific teething toddler, as the profanities from inside the house had suddenly stopped. There were only two possible explanations: Esmé Squalor and Count Olaf had suddenly dropped dead and all the orphans' problems were solved, or that the villainous adults had found a way to escape the dark room.
I highly encourage you to stop reading, close this book, and throw it into the nearest large body of water, for, though I dislike the destruction of books, I dislike the sad truths I am going to put down more. You could spend your entire life believing that all the unfortunate events that the children had been through had come to a close. Sadly, I do have to say that Count Olaf and Esmé Squalor managed to stumble into the correct door and open it.
Many girls, when they are young, have a "horse" phase. Violet Baudelaire, however, had a "car" phase. When she was about seven, Violet wanted to learn everything about cars. And she did, just short of driving one. So, when she and her fellow associates dashed towards Olaf's car and tackled his large henchperson that looked like neither a man nor a woman out of it, Violet took the driver's seat.
Duncan
favorite thing about them
I think he’s the only ASOUE character we know of who has researched VFD using completely non-VFD sources, and I would love to see the information he put together from the Prufrock library and Olaf and his troupe’s gloating / stories
least favorite thing about them
I’m just gonna directly quote from my post about Isadora because it’s the same for both of them: shallow characterization / minimal screentime, although that does give me a lot of space for headcanons. my city now.
favorite line
“[Disguising ourselves] is sort of exciting. I know that we’re doing this for serious reasons, but I’m excited anyway.” Also “We could just kick [the dummy pretending to be Sunny] around the circle” from later in the same scene. God bless.
brOTP
I think just him and his sibs, probably leaning more towards him and Isadora since we get to see them team up in canon but I don’t have any particularly interesting ideas about what Duncan and Quigley are like together.
OTP
eh, don’t really have one. Klaus/Duncan is pretty cute, I think, but I’m not hugely invested in it.
nOTP
I really disliked Violet/Duncan in the Netflix show for reasons I’ve already covered, and I have a mild preference against it, but it’s not a huge deal. I wouldn’t read a Violet/Duncan shipfic but I wouldn’t mind it as a background element in a story about other stuff.
random headcanon
if he survived The End and returned to civilization, the Quagmires all tried to find the Baudelaires, but Duncan did the most research into what had happened to them (as opposed to just trying to figure out where they’d gone), and tried to figure out what had happened at the Hotel Denouement. if the Quagmires and Lemony met, it was through their investigations overlapping.
unpopular opinion
oh jeez these are so hard, I really don’t know if I have any. I guess that I think Kit might have been lying about what happened to him in The End but my discussions of that in meta posts seem to be fairly well received so I’m not sure I’d call that “unpopular” even if most other people disagree.
skipping the song and picture, don’t really have an answer
Slackin’ with the Sleuth: Reviewing Netflix’s “The Austere Academy”
Writing a season opener is an ungrateful task: once you have recapped the previous year of plot and set up the precious exposition, there is usually not much left to enjoy. That being said, this installment could very well be the weakest double-episode so far: it struggles to start the running B-plot of the season to the point that it forgets to be an adaptation of a particular book, or even a basic episode of a streaming television series. It is, quite frankly, a mess with some fantastical bits. But the sum feels less worthy than the amount of its parts.
At this point the Netflix series has fundamentally changed the basic narrative structure which befits the story. It is strange to remember that the books closely follow the point of view of the Baudelaire orphans and never leave their side. Of course, this story is told by a tangential narrator who frequently interrupts the tale of the children to make allusions to his own life… but “allusions” remain the key word there. Daniel Handler even had to release supplementary materials (“The un-Authorized Autobiography”, “The Beatrice Letters”, etc.) to clear up parts of the plot which couldn’t have been included in the main series itself, as it needed to focus on its protagonists. And that is precisely what the Netflix adaptation loses here: focus. We are dealing with an ensemble cast off to its own particular adventures, its own separate plotlines. The camera moves from one protagonist to the next like a player over chess pieces, leaving little time for the characters to breathe.
And it is unfortunately for that reason that Duncan and Isadora become even more forgettable than they are in the books. Several key dialogs from the books, intended to work up their charm, were omitted (the initial confusion of the Baudelaire orphans over the twin/triplet controversy, Duncan’s pyrophobia, the wild dreams of the printing house: etc. Most of the charm of “The Austere Academy”, as a book, is the opportunity for the Baudelaire orphans to relate to another set of people who have fallen in similar circumstances, to find some manner of community. Its adaptation has no time to explore that. Given the importance of the triplets in later episodes, it is honestly dumbfounding that the writers didn’t take more time to establish them as characters. Especially considering the great work they did to develop more secondary players like Georgina, Babs or Hal, not to mention non-entities such as Gustav. The next episodes cannot make up for this as Duncan and Isadora are limited to a much stricter screen-time, because of plot constraints.
It is natural that the writers would fall in love with characters/relationships they essentially created or introduced for the show… but a line must be drawn when it comes at the expanse of preexisting characters. What, indeed, did the actions of the V.F.D. supervisors amount to? There is not much point to Olivia Caliban’s character in this episode, and even then, little which could not have been accomplished just as well by the character of Jacquelyn Scieszka. Larry’s quest is ultimately pointless as the Baudelaire orphans never really get to browse the contents of the book he’s trying to deliver. Jacques Snicket’s earlier introduction is, however, a welcome and even necessary invention. His death in the books has shock value yet nothing else, as the reader knows nothing about him. The Netflix show instead sets him up as likeable support primed for heartbreak.
Lemony’s monologue in his brother’s car is admittedly the best scene in “The Austere Academy”. Patrick Warburton delivers the perfect emotional cues without breaking from his usual flair. His admission of how much he misses Jacques, who we can still hear whistling nonchalantly, goes down as one of the most emotional scene in the adaptation. A perfect testament to the narration of the books. The talent of the writing team never leaves the screen for a second, it’s just… misdirected.
Speaking of characters, it’s about time we address the real star of this episode… And as strange as it may seem, sometimes an actor can be too good. Kitana Turnbull is adorably obnoxious and obnoxiously adorable as the infamous Carmelita Spats, but at what cost? She acts Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes under the table. Baudelaires and Quagmires look stiff and awkward next to her. Even her singing sounds too harmonious. We should NOT be looking forward to the sound of Carmelita’s voice, she’s supposed to be annoying! The writers even felt obligated to have Violet begrudgingly admit her recitals are “improving”. That being said, two hours of “The Carmelita show (starring those cakesniffing orphans)” is far from an unpleasant experience. Although Carmelita only becomes Olaf’s sith-in-training much later in the series, introducing their dynamic right off the bat is a great idea. The show even suggests a possible etymology for the word “cakesniffer”, whose exact meaning remains a mystery in the books. The answer is both blunt and traumatizing.
We should also not forget Roger Bart’s performance as Vice Principal Nero, which deserves just as much praise. The secondary players of “A Series Of Unfortunate Events” are tricky parts, as they rely so much on caricature. Finding some warmth, some internal struggle to sell the character as more than a bland cardboard cut-out is no easy task, but Bart undoubtedly succeeds. It is only while watching the episode that I understood the point of Nero’s character in the books; he is very much Daniel Handler’s dark alter-ego, a somber reminder of the bitter maniac he could have become had he not succeeded as a writer. You have to give credits to the writing team for trying to expand on these characters while retaining as much of their original lines as possible.
As usual Neil Patrick Harris expanded Olaf’s disguise-of-the-week in interesting ways, and Coach Genghis could perhaps be the most ambitious yet. He retooled the character persona as a mix of Hitlerian youth leader and self-actualization guru, all in the name of “school spirit”. The end result is strikingly similar to several criticisms made on the education system in other books (“The Basic Eight”, “Why We Broke Up”, etc.). The social satire of the original series lost nothing of its bite. If anything, it’s coming back with a vengeance. Putting Genghis’ arrival at Prufrock as the mid-episode ending was definitely a mistake, however. Olaf has already come back to torment the Baudelaire orphans under three disguises at this point, therefore the revelation of a new one is not much to fuss about.
And if we have to really put our cards on the table, I suppose I should once again speak of the worst, most damageable aspect of the Netflix series: its music. No, scratch that; its sound design. The series is extremely fast-paced and dialogue-heavy. With Lemony’s narration already commenting on everything, putting so much music into every single scene is the worst possible choice the directors could have made. It drowns out the lines of dialog, which become difficult to follow, and every scene feels, looks and sounds the same: accordion and klezmer everywhere. There is, to put it simply, no pacing and no ambiance. It’s heartbreaking to see so much money wasted on expensive sets when you know it’s going to get ruined by the same cursed accordion notes.
On that regard, there were clearly some budget accommodations made on this episode. The director of “The Miserable Mill” simply made Prufrock Prep way too big: its exterior layout makes it look big enough to house a thousand students, but we only ever see a hundred of them at the pep rally… And the cafeteria can only seat two dozens.
More new musical themes could have helped. It’s really more of a general complaint, but it’s especially bad in “The Austere Academy”. Nero’s terrible recitals actually act as welcomed pauses in the pacing, since they require silence in the background. But the worst offender has to be that final scene before the midway point: as Genghis is about to introduce himself on stage, the Quagmires cry out to the Baudelaires, who can’t hear them because of how much noise the crowd is making. But we don’t even really hear the crowd making a ruckus: the accordion music is louder, it just sounds and feels exactly like every other scene, noisy environment or not. Therefore the viewer can’t really understand why the Baudelaires and Quagmires can’t communicate. It’s a painful and spectacular failure of sound mixing.
The entire ordeal is a cacophonic catastrophic in that it robs several key scenes of their intended emotional resonance. The Quagmire’s final capture is but one many dark and dramatic moments in the plot on which the Netflix adaptation fails to capitalize. It’s nowhere near as bad as the humorous trombone played over Josephine Anwhistle’s death scene, but it’s getting close. So far “The Austere Academy” retains too much of the original books’ contents, and understands them too well, to deliver anything but great television… but it succeeds in the details rather than the big picture. If only it could be the other way around!
VFD FILES
NOTE THAT THIS PERSON IS NOT OFFICIALLY APART OF THE ORGANIZATION AS OF YET.
NAME: Desdemona Brona Mallory ↳ Answers to: Dessy, Des, Mona, Monnie, Lucky Duckling
GENDER: Female
AGE: Fifteen
BIRTHDATE, BIRTHPLACE: ▇▇▇▇▇▇, Paris
ROLE: Chemist
PERSONALITY: From observation, DM is extremely clever for her age, and very organized. She is seen very often writing in her notebook - JS reports it’s where she writes down ideas and projects - and sometimes muttering the periodic table to herself. It is also reported in the margins of her notebook are doodles of other girls with childish scrawlings of hearts around them. She is very passive, but determined. Apparently working on a formula for workable invisible ink, much like another young chemist. A very promising recruit, more so with her ties to the Baudelaire children.
ASSOCIATES: Violet Baudelaire most closely Klaus Baudelaire Sunny Baudelaire Duncan Quagmire Isadora Quagmire
BACKGROUND: DM’s mother is an upstanding librarian and volunteer, her father a very important chemist. Her father passed away in a chemical fire, and her mother shortly sent her to Prufrock Preparatory School. The Quagmire triplets joined a few months after her and DM bonded with her. The same occurred with the Baudelaires. DM’s mother informed the banker that DM would be accompanying the Baudelaires, as there was no other relative with the time to look after her. As promising as the Baudelaires. Easy to keep a close eye on.
Hey! 👋 Do you have any nonbinary headcannons for asoue? 🟨⬜️🟪⬛️
Hello new mutual!
Unfortunately (no pun intended) I don't specifically headcanon any of the charecters as nonbinary, although I have seen people have that hc for fiona and I can definately see that :)
now that I think abt it it's actually pretty ironic considering I myself am nonbinary, lol, but I can give you some of my other gender/sexuality headcannons I have!
Isadora I definitely see as trans, given that she's the only girl in a set of supposedly identical triplets. Idk if that's technically a headcannon since so many people believe it that it's basically canon at this point lol. She's also gay, but sometimes she uses the term sapphic just because she likes it's connection to the famous poet. (also, she kinda has this joke where whenever someone asks where she's from she says she's from the isle of lesbos and her brothers will just be laughing so hard in the background sinse they're the only ones who know what it means.)
Duncan I don't really have any gender specific hcs for but I do have this headcannon that when the triplets where around 4 or 5 they all snuck into they're parents room to play with their mom's makeup when they were supposed to be napping. They put it all away immediately after they heard her coming but they forgot to actually take the makeup off, which was super funny.
Mrs. Quagmire: where you three playing with my makeup box?
4 yr old quagmire triplets, with lipstick and eyeliner smeared all over their faces: .................... no.
and they all just generally enjoyed wearing makeup, so their parents started letting them wear it in family photos. that had almost nothing to do with what you asked and took very long so im so sorry, anyways!
Quigley is bi because I say so and also because someone else said so and I liked it so ya. I think that he has a preference for girls, but guys make him a lot more nervous, wich isadora teases him for and jokes that she's glad she's the only one not attracted to men because it looks exausting. And also quigly's a demiboy. "will you elaborate on that?" no.
Fiona i now headcanon as nonbinary, but using she/her pronouns, and also omniromantic (pref for girls) and demisexual. it just seems to fit. Also, in a modern au fiona is a goblincore and no one can tell me otherwise.
Klaus is gay
Violet is everyone's favorite bi disaster, but she only has eyes for isadora <3 (you don't have to agree on viodora, but you'll have to get used to me taking every operatunity to bring them up.) She also seems like a demi girl to me, and probably ace.
that is absolutely not what you asked for at all and I was just all over the place so sorry abt that lol. I'm also sorry for the amount of times I said lol, that was more than usual for me, but i hope you enjoyed it nonetheless!
What scene in Austere Academy are you talking about? I haven't read the books in a long time
Okay, major ASOUE book spoilers below (don’t read if you don’t want to know what happens yet, I tagged this as asoue spoilers also)
***********************
So basically at the end of Austere Academy, Isadora & Duncan are kidnapped by Count Olaf and his henchmen, and they throw the Quagmires into the back of his car. Klaus, Violet, & Sunny go after them and Klaus manages to get to the car first as they’re putting them in. Isadora at one point tells Klaus that her notebook that she gave him has important info about Count Olaf’s background, and Duncan shouts “VFD” out the car window to Klaus (which in the books means nothing to him at that point). One of the white faced women bite Klaus’ hand when he goes to grab Isadora, and then Olaf kicks Klaus as hard as he can in the stomach. He kicks him so hard that Klaus doubles over in pain and is unable to even stand up, even though his best friends are being kidnapped and he wants nothing more than to get up and help them escape. Olaf then grabs Isadora’s notebook from Klaus, hops in the car, and drives away while the Quagmires are hopelessly pounding away at the back window. It’s a brutal and dark scene for a kids book, but it’s really important to the storyline because the tone of the books really switches up a ton after that point.
#anon#answered#asoue spoilers#asoue#its gonna be a very tough scene to watch#but its also vital they do it right
