StreamBuilder: our open-source framework for powering your dashboard.

Today, we’re abnormally jazzed to announce that we’re open-sourcing the custom framework we built to power your dashboard on Tumblr. We call it StreamBuilder, and we’ve been using it for many years.

First things first. What is open-sourcing? Open sourcing is a decentralized software development model that encourages open collaboration. In more accessible language, it is any program whose source code is made available for use or modification as users or other developers see fit.

What, then, is StreamBuilder? Well, every time you hit your Following feed, or For You, or search results, a blog’s posts, a list of tagged posts, or even check out blog recommendations, you’re using this framework under the hood. If you want to dive into the code, check it out here on GitHub!

StreamBuilder has a lot going on. The primary architecture centers around “streams” of content: whether posts from a blog, a list of blogs you’re following, posts using a specific tag, or posts relating to a search. These are separate kinds of streams, which can be mixed together, filtered based on certain criteria, ranked for relevancy or engagement likelihood, and more.

On your Tumblr dashboard today you can see how there are posts from blogs you follow, mixed with posts from tags you follow, mixed with blog recommendations. Each of those is a separate stream, with its own logic, but sharing this same framework. We inject those recommendations at certain intervals, filter posts based on who you’re blocking, and rank the posts for relevancy if you have “Best stuff first” enabled. Those are all examples of the functionality StreamBuilder affords for us.

So, what’s included in the box?

The full framework library of code that we use today, on Tumblr, to power almost every feed of content you see on the platform.

A YAML syntax for composing streams of content, and how to filter, inject, and rank them.

Abstractions for programmatically composing, filtering, ranking, injecting, and debugging streams.

Abstractions for composing streams together—such as with carousels, for streams-within-streams.

An abstraction for cursor-based pagination for complex stream templates.

Unit tests covering the public interface for the library and most of the underlying code.

What’s still to come

Documentation. We have a lot to migrate from our own internal tools and put in here!

More example stream templates and example implementations of different common streams.

🌟 New

We’re running a new experiment that changes the header on posts to reduce the redundancy of avatars in reblogs, save some vertical space by moving recommendation labels around, afford more room for badges, and more! On desktop web, it also removes the floating avatars and makes posts full width with the sidebars. If you have feedback about this change, please send it in to Support using the “Feedback” category.

We’ve removed the blog carousel at the top of the Blog Subs dashboard tab (for those who have it enabled), as it was causing the load time to worsen dramatically. (You can enable this tab in your Tumblr Labs settings, or via the new experimental dashboard tab configuration button if you have it.)

🛠 Fixed

Fixed an issue in recommended and related tag card carousels that would show a “Follow” button when you’re already following that tag.

We were having some issues with SoundCloud embeds not working in posts, but it’s cleared up now.

In mobile phone browsers, the “Source” and “Submitted by” text at the bottom of posts is now correctly aligned on the left (it was a few pixels off).

Also in mobile phone browsers, we’ve cleaned up a visual glitch on trending tag pages that was causing the “Trending now” label to be on the same line as the tag itself.

The best magic trick? Get the audience looking one way while the real action happens somewhere else. And like any good magician, Luke and Nicola know how to work a crowd.

Let’s run it back.

After weeks of radio silence, both Luke and Nicola roared back into the fandom within 24 hours of each other. Luke stripped his IG clean of anything warm, fun, or unscripted — a move that screamed “Something’s coming.” A project? A promo push? A rebrand before a reveal?

Naturally, we waited for the drop.

Instead? Nicola posted.

We got tiramisu with the caption “life is sweet” — a phrase that, in Lukola-land, is practically Morse code for “he’s near.” The fandom immediately picked up on the “sweet treat” throwback, and before we could even decode that, she dropped the real puzzle: a selfie with a mysterious ear and thumbs-up.

The game was on. The fandom, trained for this exact moment, launched into full CSI mode.

Then — like magic — a Cyprus restaurant tagged Luke in a photo that looks like it was taken in 2024, pre-forehead scar. A nod to the 'Antonia and her ocean' narrative? A breadcrumb to set the timeline? Either way, it landed with all the subtlety of a cannon.

Let’s be clear: this was misdirection.

Not from anything specific — not from the stroller photo (which, by the way, Nicola clearly didn’t mind us finding — she liked the carousel). Not from any “oops” moment that needed covering up. This wasn’t damage control.

This was logistics control.

They’ve done this before: when they want to travel quietly — especially with the whole family in tow — they stage something loud. Something that gets the fandom running in one direction while they slip away in another.

Luke's IG shift? Desired brand management that just happens to be perfectly timed for optimum distraction

Nicola’s Stories? A later-gram sweet nod, a Polin wink, and a distraction selfie.

The Cyprus drop? Just enough Antonia to muddy the waters.

So here’s what this actually looks like: A planned misdirection. Not a panicked cover-up. A choreography of distraction while the real show travels elsewhere. Because that’s the actual play, isn’t it? Nicola’s “I’m here, look!” post. Luke’s old-but-new tagged-drop. A swirl of visibility… just as they disappear again. Probably home, together.

And now — let’s talk about what this is not.

This, in my opinion, is not about the stroller photo. This entire dance isn’t a panicked attempt to take eyes off a revelation they didn’t want seen. If anything, Nicola wanted it found. She liked the carousel. She knew what was in it. She planted the truth like a quiet little seed, and it sat waiting for 2 weeks to be discovered.

So while everyone’s yelling “Look over there!” — the real action is still humming along.

The mayhem we’re seeing? It’s classic misdirection. But that stroller photo? That’s just… truth.

And it’s already blooming.

Did Nic or Luke post anything for polin week last year ? I read on another blog that last year Luke avoided posting anything for polin week or any brigerton content and that was the same week Antonia posted the instyle matching pic of Luke’s hand which was the first time Luke got hate and she got a lot of hate comments under her post because he liked her post under 2 minutes but didn’t bother to post for polin week .

LOL, no. For one, it was Polin YEAR not week, and the 1st 2024 promos came out in Feb., when L posted Polin back to back. (Seeing as N posts at 7x the rate L does, it was alot). N posted a S3 promo on April 6 and commented "Happy Polin Day" which L liked; 3 days later, they did 3 days worth of interviews at the London press call and then embarked on a S3 World Tour, visiting 8 different cities during which they periodically posted. I don't think anyone can say they didn't give the Polin fans enough, Polin week or not.

A posted her LA dump on April 7 (a day after N's post) and L liked it because she was a friend in his friend group who was w/ him in LA the week prior for bits & bobs. He seems to have thought nothing of it, as he liked posts from all the Sohoes at the time. N clocked it, however, that A was likely getting a "mixed message". I doubt L expected her pics to match ones in Instyle, but she posted 3 different carousels to make sure something stuck, didn't she? (She still only matched 2 pics, and although the pool matched, it wasn't L's hand but R's)

Anyhow, L loves his job as "my wife Colin Bridgerton" and seems to love being a real life husband to N and it shows in his actions - from what he posts on his grid, to how hard he works on the show, to the support he shows N and what he has sacrificed for her.

my 'problem' so to speak is simply belief. any ways to get around that?

no matter how much I try to change perspective/mindset, reinforce positive beliefs and/or assume, I feel like I'm gaslighting myself :') and i simply find it hard to get rid of that/not let it consume me.

some eg of my thinking:

'shifting is real' -> no you're being delusional.

'it's possible for me' -> girl it'll never happen stop lying to urself.

'i trust myself' -> ok but not with extreme things like shifting!! you're being hopeful for nothing!

'i can shift, it's natural and inherent' -> stfu assumptions never do anything. it's not. you can't. you never will.

'i believe in and accept loa/shifting as real' -> right!! you are crazy. none of your assumptions came to fruition both good nor bad.

'im going to shift' -> liarrr you would've done so by now.

'not everyone would be lying, its real' -> you've fallen for cult tactics don't believe anyone.

'let go, don't put pressure on it's -> you've done this for years, nothing will change. you'll never shift.

...I don't need to go on. it's so exhausting. constant loops of it.

I hope you understand how exhausting it is and how strongly I want to overcome this 😭 I tell myself it's ok, this can't stop me but alas they continue and become overbearing so I end up ultimately succumbing into believing them. and every time I sit down and shift, I basically don't believe I will.

I know it’s repetitive to hear, but persist, persist, persist. Any time these thoughts pop up, say “not today satan” and immediately combat it with different affirmations. Do this until the natural occurence to these unavory assumptions you have about yourself are the positive ones.
