While you're watching Endgame, it comes to and end. Thanos is gone and the avengers saved the day. Tony retires, Steve is with his love of his love, Clint is with his family again, Natasha and Bruce are enjoying life together but... Thor, thor? What is he doing? The avengers split up, in a good way, and a new team assembled. But him? He's somewhere, on a rooftop and it's early in the morning.
Everything was reversed but he still couldn't find, the two remaining people who stayed with him. His best friend, and Loki. Everyone was happy but him? He was lonely on a rooftop and waiting, for what, you ask? The sun, he's waiting for the sun to rise.
He turned around when he heard footsteps, he saw something so unbelievable and he couldn't believe it. He stood from his spot, and faced the boy who was with him through the very start. Who he protected, and failed, and the one who protected him. He caused mischief, he caused trouble, but still loves his brother with all his heart.
And the sight of Loki, his brother, made his heart ache. Though, with all the heartbreak he still couldn't believe it. "You're just a hallucination, you wouldn't be here..." He mumbled to himself as he stared at his brother who's smirk was still on his lips. Thor reached in his pockets and grabbed whatever object he held. He looked at it, it was identical with the object he last threw at his brother before he... Died
The shell like object rest on his palm and he gripped tightly on it. "If only you were here, brother..." He said, a bit loudly for his brother to hear. He threw the object at him, just to make the figure disappear. Though, with a small hope in his heart that he wouldn't.
Loki put his hand up, and grabbed the object before it could hit him. His brother's eyes widen and was shocked to see the figure hold up the object. With a low voice, the younger whispered "I'm here" while he was on the edge of crying. Thor didn't take another moment to waste and ran to his brother, crying in his embrace.
The big oaf never cried, and his cries were louder than he had expected. His grip on his brother was tight but he didn't care. He could feel him, his presence, his body. He was there and that was the only thing that matters. Loki wanted to cry to, but he didn't and stood strong for the both of them. "I'm here brother... And I told you..." He paused for his brother to finish the sentence with him.
"The sun will shine on us again"

Thor drags his idiot friends into the suicide mission number "lost count". Yes, of course Loki's coming along, someone has to make sure the oafs will stay alive. Which is why he informed a guard on his way out. If lucky, Odin will come running before Thor can leave the planet.
But, so far, nothing stops the idiot. The only obstacle between him and his desire for blood is Heimdall, the last defence line. But Loki can still work with that.
"Let me do it…" they inform and step forward, ready to speak up.
"If you really think I will allow you to break a thousand years old peace truce just so you can get revenge for having your feast ruined, you are fooling yourself, Odinson," the guard answers, glaring directly into Thor.
"They invaded the palace! They were close to getting the casket again!" He yells, his patience already running dry.
"Which is why a diplomatic mission will be sent there to discuss the incident without disturbing the peace.
"Diplomatic mission? With these barbarians, these monsters? With all honesty, who the fuck is stupid and coward enough to suggest this?" Thor's voice echoes in all the length of the rainbow bridge. Sif and Fandral share a wary look but do nothing, and Heimdall stays silent and still.
"Brother, maybe we should stay. Jötunnheim is not just a forest for a hunting trip, we'll freeze to death," Loki speaks up.
"If you want to run back to your mother's skirts, you're free to go, snake," Hogun scoffs, always with the comeback ready.
"Not everyone is as much of a coward as you, Liesmith," Volstagg adds, making Loki's first clench and their blood boil.
"The Prince is correct. You will freeze before you find Laufey," Heimdall insists.
"I AM THOR ODINSON, CROWN PRINCE OF ASGARD AND I DEMAND YOU TO OPEN THE BIFROST," Thor starts yelling, yet cannot get Heimdall to even blink.
"And I do not care about how much you can raise your voice. You shall not pass," Heimdall's voice is dead, unfazed by Thor's fury. Yet, he only fuels that anger, since Thor grips the Mjölnir tighter.
"When Allfather gets here-"
"What will happen?" Thor gets interrupted by Odin, already slaying the prince with his eye. Everyone but Thor and Heimdall moves aside, praying Odin's fury won't be directed to them as well.
"Father?"
"You disobeyed my direct order to leave the matter as it is, you almost broke a peace treaty that stayed strong for a thousand years. And for what? So you will play war and prove your might?" Odin growls, his glare getting even more cold and deadly.
"But the Frost Giants-" Thor strutters, his shoulders dropping.
"ENOUGH! You attempted to bring war to Asgard mere minutes after your coronation! You not only endangered yourself but your friends and brother and people! You never grew past playing hero with your wooden dolls, for you insist on toying with people's lives!" Odin now yells, ten times more intensely than Thor did, even though his tone is lower. The Warriors Four are frozen on their spot, and Loki finds himself unable to draw in a deep breath. Odin flares his nostrils and looks down.
"Perhaps I was mistaken. You are not fit for a king, and you are now a traitor of Asgard," Odin decides.
No, no, that's not what should happen. Odin should have just taught Thor how to be a better king, not punish him! He didn't even do anything!
"Father," Loki tries to reason, to stop Thor from getting imprisoned, or banished or killed. The only response from Odin was a scream, utterly incoherent. Then, Odin glares at Heimdall, and the gatekeeper finally moves.
After getting dragged there, Thor stands right at the opening of the bridge, watching Odin with terror.
"Thor Odinson, you are unworthy of these realms. You are unworthy of your titles, you are unworthy of the loved ones you betrayed!" He first uses Gungnir to open the Bifrost, and then strips Thor off his cape and armour as he strips him off his titles and power.
"I now take from you your power," and the Mjölnir sits on Odin's hand instead of Thor's, each word from the king's mouth is another part of Thor's armour getting reduced into nothing.
"In the name of my father, and his father before, I, Odin Allfather, cast you out!" With just a movement forward, Thor is being sent in that wormhole, possibly never to return. And the Warriors Four, Heimdall, and even Loki, are frozen still and watching, even after Odin has walked away. But, at some point, someone had to talk.
"What is it like to have no competition?" Fandral scoffs, following the well known technique of when something goes wrong, bully Loki into fixing it.
Yet, Loki stays silent, watching where his brother stood, trying to remember everything he can, since his memory is all that's left of Thor. It takes a long time, but eventually, they answer.
"I didn't mean for this to happen. Just… I just wanted to show Odin that Thor wasn't ready, that he needed time and training, not… not that. He… he was my brother…" His words are just a whisper, but still strike the Warriors Four with the realization, Loki's being truthful, and has a point. Just when Sif is about to answer, Heimdall stops them.
"If you will excuse us, I must speak to the prince alone." His voice is just as steady and unyielding as always, as before Odin's arrival. The Warriors Four nod sharply and leave, not even questioning or whispering behind Loki's back. And Heimdall guides Loki in the Bifrost, explaining with just one sentence.
"We need to talk about your father."
~~~
The first thing Thor notices is the pain, both the sharp burn from the Bifrost and the harshness of the ground below him. He takes a look at his surroundings, a desert of some sort. And, it's night, yet warm. Then, he looks at his clothes, at the odd mixed fabrics and plastic and…
Is this Midgard?
And where's his hammer? Did Odin keep it?
He notices a sharp light, far away from his location, it must be Mjölnir. But, before he can move from where he is, a vehicle stops in front of him, and a man in a dark suit with a red eight legged creature printed on it laughs.
"Boss, you're not going to believe this."
White horse
Pairing: Loki x reader
Warnings: maybe angst? Kind of mentions of kidnapping ig?
AN: this one may or may not have more than one part coming 🤫🤭😉 also it’s too the song White Horse by Taylor Swift and I’ve linked it so you can listen while you read or after or before if you’d like!
——————————————————————————
Say you’re sorry, that face of an Angel
Comes out just when you need it to
“Loki get back here! We aren’t done talking about this!” You cry, chasing after the green cloaked god.
“There is simply nothing to talk about. You think leaving is a good idea, I think it is not. Therefore, you are forbidden to leave.” He says bitterly, storming away, back towards the palace.
“Oh for the love of Odin- you’re being ridiculous! You cannot forbid me from doing anything Loki! I am my own person, or am I not now my love?” You ask angrily, picking up your pace to even try and match his.
“Stop! Stop calling me that, stop trying to make it better. I am no longer your love y/n, I am no longer your anything it would seem. But no need to worry, I will be sure to think the same of you and nothing more.” He says coldly, the smirk you so despised playing on his lips.
You groan, smacking his arm. “Would you just listen to me for five minutes?! I-I don’t want to lose you Loki. But I have to get away from here, I don’t want to be contained to only this one place all my life, it’s not enough for me!” You cry, taking his cold, bony hand in your own and holding it tight. “I want to be with you, please.” You beg, your eyes filling with tears.
“Y/n, if Asgard isn’t enough for you, surely I am not either.” He says coldly.
“That’s not true! Do you know how long it took me to finally make this decision for myself? To decide leaving is what’s best?” You ask and he says nothing. “I cried for days at the thought of leaving you. I paced all the time. You’re not the only one having trouble with this choice. Loki- you’re my everything. I can’t bear the thought of losing you forever.” You promise him, squeezing his hand reassuringly.
As I paced back and forth all this time
Cause I honestly believed in you
“Then do not leave. Stay with me, become my princess. We can spend our days by the lake and reading books from the royal library.” Loki argues, taking his other hand and wrapping it around yours.
Suddenly he’s getting down on a knee, pulling out a ring box. You shake your head rapidly, not believing what you’re watching.
“Y/n, you are my princess, my soulmate and my other half. This kingdom would be unbearable without you, it would be the most boring place in the galaxy. I see colors brighter, feel things more clearly and feel like a better man than I am when you are around me. Please, do me the greatest of honors and marry me.” He gives his little speech, smiling up at you with the look of lust and love in his eyes.
“No.” You breathe, staring down at him.
“W-what?” Loki asks, a frown etched on his face.
“I said no! You cannot... guilt trip me into staying here, nor can you just propose to me to prove a point or to distract me for my choices. You... you can’t just tie me down like this. I’m not going to give up on my hopes, nor on my dreams to suit you.” You scoff, stepping back from him.
“You have to! You have to because I say so and as I am crowned prince of Asgard, you must obey!” He cries angrily, getting up off the ground quickly and moving closer to you.
You stare at him with pure disgust and disbelief in your eyes. “You may be the crowned prince but you cannot force me to obey you by any means!” You shout back in his face, breathing heavy with fury. “If you insist I must then you’ll have to throw me in the dungeons because I’d rather rot down there for the rest of my life than marry the man I’m seeing before me right now!” You snark again, tears burning your eyes.
His face contorts into a sickly grin, one that sends horrible goosebumps up your spine.
Holdin’ on, the days drag on
Stupid girl, I should’ve know, I should’ve known
“You truly mean that, do you? You would rather die without a smidge of dignity, stripped down to nothing but a caged animal in the deepest part of Asgard’s darkest, coldest dungeons than marry your beloved?” He asks, inching closer to you.
“You are not my beloved. It would seem you have killed whatever’s left of him.” You growl coldly, turning your back to him.
He laughs a cold and hollow laugh. “You do not get to walk away from me!” He bellows and you remember exactly where his temper came from.
“Yes I do and I will.” You say calmly, your stubborn nature kicking in.
“Trust you to act like a coward in a time of need for bravery.” He sneers.
You swerve back around, snapping your head in his direction.
“Continuing this useless argument with you has nothing to do with bravery Loki. It’s stupidity. And you are being irrational. I can’t talk to you like this. So yes, I’m walking away. But believe me when I say that that is the brave choice in this situation.” You explain, staring straight into his steely grey eyes.
“You said you loved me! You said we were meant to be! You said we were soulmates the universe and the gods decided were meant for each other and only each other. Did you mean one word of it?” He asks, a sad and desperate smile on his lips.
“I- of course I did Loki. I meant every word of what I’ve said to you.” You promise, tears streaming down your own features. His slender and delicate fingers gently reach up, brushing them away with his thumb, his fingers lingering on your cheek.
“Then why are you insisting on leaving me?” He asks, his voice more broken than you’d ever thought possible.
“I don’t belong here Loki. I’m destined for other things and meant to be or not, I cannot truly commit myself to being your princess, to being your forever if it means not exploring that destiny.” You say softly, resting your forehead on his chest longingly.
It’s taking all of your strength to fight the urge to wrap your arms tightly around him and agree to what he’s asking just to see his smile return but you manage.
You know this relationship could never be healthy if you couldn’t commit to it with all of your heart and soul. And if it couldn’t be healthy, you didn’t want to put either of you through that. You couldn’t handle that pain.
That I’m not a princess, this ain’t a fairytale
I’m not the one you’ll sweep off her feet, lead her up the stairwell
“Loki. You have to let me go my own way.” You sigh, glancing up at him.
He says nothing, turning himself away from you.
“I cannot do that. I literally cannot bring myself to do that. Either you stay or I am merely nothing to you. That is how it will be.” He states after taking a shaky breath.
“Loki you can’t possibly expect me to make that decision!” You cry out, mouth agape in shock.
“It is the decision that must be made. If I mean anything to you at all, you would stay and rule by my side.” He says.
“It isn’t that simple Loki! I can’t just choose you because I love you.” You groan, throwing your hands up in frustration.
“And why not? Because it is easier to run away from me, run from what it is we have than to be with me? I am fully aware of that fact y/n, it has burdened me all my life!” He bursts out, his eyes glazed over with unshed tears.
“No! You do not get to play the left as a baby card right now Loki because you know it is not like that at all! You know I harbour nothing but love for you! It is not a simple choice I’m making right now!” You argue, shaking your head.
“What did you expect me to say exactly y/n? I am not going to stand here and blatantly lie to your face and say I agree with your choice in departure nor that I am ok with it!” He shouts louder. “I refuse to let you leave! I refuse it, ok? You cannot leave Asgard, I will forbid Heimdall from allowing you to go if that is what I must do but you will not leave me like this!” He snaps, his face one of rage and possessiveness as he makes his way to the doorway and out towards the bridge to the gate to the realms.
“You can’t do that to me!” You cry, racing after him to stop him. You scramble to get in front of him, laying your palms against his chest to keep him from moving any further.
“Remove yourself from my path darling.” He warns, staring you down. Still, you remain in your spot.
“Not a chance dearest.” You growl back mockingly.
This ain’t Hollywood, this is a small town
I was a dreamer before you went and let me down
He picks you up carefully by the arms, moving you behind him effortlessly.
“If you do this I will never forgive you! I will not only leave you, I will never speak to you again. Not even if you hold one of your swords to my throat to force the words out yourself.” You shout after him, your voice void of any emotions other than pure, white, hot rage.
He pauses in the middle of the bifrost, looking at you, testing the truth behind your words as he analyzes your stance.
He meets your eyes, your big y/e/c showcasing every bit of vulnerability within you in that moment for him to see. He had a knack for that it seemed, seeing everything about you no matter how much you tried to hide it.
He knew you like the back of his hand. Normally, you felt safe and protected with that.
Now you just felt hatred for the eyes baring into your soul.
“You will forgive me someday. I am sure of it.” He says quietly, smiling softly at you.
He leaves you there on the bridge, falling to your knees with a small sob.
Deep down you knew he was just scared. Scared you would somehow be hurt or taken or used as a weapon of some sort and he wouldn’t be there to come to your rescue.
But that didn’t matter. You didn’t want your knight in shining armour. You only wanted to be free.
Now it’s too late for you and your white horse
To come around
————————————————————
A few nights later...
You couldn’t take it anymore. You had paced back and forth in your room, biting down your nails out of stress and anger and the need to concentrate. Your hair was a mess, you refused to change into any of the clothes you were given, staying stubbornly in your outfit from the few nights ago instead.
Since your meltdown on the Bifrost, Loki had brought you back to the palace, stroked your hair as he tried to talk you down, calm you. It had worked, much to your dismay. You’d woken up in a foreign room and upon an attempt to leave, you found that you were being kept there.
Loki was treating you like a prisoner. He was being true to the Midgardian fairytale Rapunzel he’d once read to you in the gardens, you’d thought to yourself the first day.
“Loki, let me out of here!” You screamed desperately that day, pounding on the door until your fists ached. Crying and shrieking in hopes someone would help you.
He again, came and talked you down, holding you as you sobbed. You were a wreck, you couldn’t comprehend how your sweet, kind eyed Loki had become this monster who kept you like a toy or trophy rather than his equal, his true love.
Somehow though, you believed he was in there, crying to get out and be the one to hold you in his arms and let you go. You imagined staring into his eyes, kissing him, promising you’d be there for him no matter how far you were. It was driving you crazy, trying to flip between the Loki you’d known all this time and the one you were with now.
Maybe I was naive,
Got lost in your eyes
You’d managed to calm yourself most of the time, you’d managed to talk him out of the crazy idea of keeping you under lock and key. Even this new Loki seemed to realize it was too much, too inhuman and cruel. He apologized for having done it in the first place and you merely nodded, staying true to your promise to him. You weren’t speaking to him anytime soon, if at all.
You instead stayed in his room, staying by his side when he wasn’t taking care of his duties.
You knew he was wrong. You knew he was being awful and possessive and downright toxic but still, you couldn’t imagine not being with him. You couldn’t imagine it but you knew it was a terrible idea to willingly stay. It wasn’t what was right for you.
You stayed in bed most of the day, trying not to feel the ache for his touch in your chest the way you were now. And when you weren’t, you were standing on the balcony, watching out at Asgard. You may not love living there but you still believed it was beautiful regardless.
That was how Loki found you that evening, in a robe on the balcony, staring down at the city.
“It is beautiful with the sunset is it not?” He says calmly from the doorway, leaning against the doorframe.
You nod a bit, not bothering to turn around to face him.
You hear him moving closer but you pay no attention, crossing your arms over your chest.
“You are truly not going to talk to me?” He asks with a sigh.
You shake your head, resting your chin in your palm as you watched the sky become as golden as the palace itself as the sunset.
He sighs, running a hand through his hair from what you can see in the corner of your eyes.
You were taking your time, balancing your options on the invisible scale in your mind. You wanted to be held by him and trust him again but you couldn’t bring yourself to let him have it all. Not after what he’d done. You silently decided that letting him struggle, torturing him with your silence was your best play.
And never really had a chance
My mistake, I didn’t know to be in love
You had to fight to have the upper hand
Your long term plan for yourself was yet to be determined. Loki’s kindness and love for you was blinding you, making it impossible to concentrate on your thoughts, much less make them coherent.
You brush past him, ignoring his begging gaze as you go into the bathroom and shut the door behind you, getting in the shower. You let the water run down your hair, getting it wet while your mind starts to clear up a bit and you finally know exactly what you have to do for your sake.
You finish, getting redressed before going back into the room, ignoring the princes longing eyes as you climb into the bed, facing away from him.
“Alright, that is enough already y/n.” He sighs, pulling the blankets off of you. You jump up in shock, staring at him blankly. “I know you are mad at me however I only did this for us, my love!” He insists.
You scoff, abandoning your former decision completely. “You did absolutely NOTHING for us here Loki. You did this for you. You did this because you’re scared.” You argue back, your days of pent up anger at him thankful for a release.
“I did not! I did it to protect you, to keep us from falling apart!” He shouts.
“Please! Loki I am begging you to at least admit to yourself that you did none of this for my protection!” You cry, staring him right in the eye.
His breathing is heavy and jagged, he’s panicking, this much you knew. “I-I would never do anything regarding you for my own selfish gain.” He says calmly.
“But you did Loki. You did everything to do with this for YOUR gain.” You sob, tears covering your cheeks.
“I-I love you Loki. I truly, painfully do. But I cannot be with anyone who would regard me as some sort of trophy. I will not do it.” You continue, your lip trembling as you speak.
“I never- I never meant for it to get this far... I merely wanted to keep the one thing I’ve truly loved in my life safe. I wanted us to spend forever together, side by side.” He says, his voice so low and quiet you have to strain to hear it properly.
“I-I know.” You stammer, gulping in a breath between tearful gasps. And you did know. He was your other half, there was no way you didn’t think of the future with him in the same way he did. You just didn’t always treat it the same.
I had so many dreams
About you and me
“Please- please forgive me darling. I cannot apologize enough for the chaos and- and the harm and trauma I put you through these past few days. I was no better than my father himself. I was truly a monster.” He says, his eyes once again filled with unshed tears.
You nod lightly. “Okay.” You say quietly, meeting his eyes.
“W-what?” He asks, his eyes wide in disbelief.
“You heard me. Okay. I forgive you.” You say simply.
“J-just like that?” He says, still not convinced.
You force a laugh, continuing with your small charade. “Yes just like that. You’re my true love, I could never stay mad at you for too long Loki.” You say with a small smile.
He smiles back, pulling you into a hug. “Oh my darling you have no idea how grateful I am for your forgiveness.” He murmurs into your ear. You hesitantly hug back, wrapping your arms tightly around him.
“Always.” You promise quietly. “As much as I love sharing a room with you though Loki, I think I’d like to sleep in my own bed tonight if that’s alright.” You ask, blinking at him innocently.
He nods repeatedly in agreement. “Of course my love. Whatever you wish.” He promises, standing and offering you a hand. You take it in your own, getting to your feet yourself.
The two of you walk around talking for a few hours, making you glad for the fresh air and mind numbingly silent atmosphere. He holds your hand tight, almost as if he’s scared you’ll disappear if he lets go.
“I think I need some sleep my love. I’m feeling kind of tired.” You say with a small yawn. Without hesitation he walks you to your room, making sure you’re good for the night and that everything is to your likings.
“Loki, everything is fine. Go. I’ll be fine.” You groan exhaustedly. He sighs in defeat, standing in the doorway.
“Ok but I will be here in the morning in case you need me. Goodnight my love.” He says, pressing a gentle kiss on your cheek.
You nod with a tiny smile, knowing that by morning you wouldn’t be there for him to help.
Once he’s finally gone, you change into something more comfortable and a little more inconspicuous, grabbing a few of your things and tossing them into a bag. You scramble to write a quick note to your family so they aren’t left entirely in the dark with all that’s happening and you ensure that the door is locked to buy yourself more time.
You climb out the window, gulping as you feel yourself dangling from so high up but making your climb down to the ground floor of the castle.
You felt guilt for leaving Loki so quickly and hastily but you knew it was for the best. You weren’t meant for any kind of fairytale life and staying with him while he was so controlling and had become so dark wasn’t a valid option for you. You wanted to live life, not struggle through it.
And so, you made a small jump to the ground and ran down the shimmering bifrost, running to the gates and off into the night alone.
Happy endings
Now I know...
Thor had taken Loki to Odin, in Asgard. But you had managed to convince him to at least ask Odin if you can go in and try to get a read on his- Loki’s aura. You were waiting for his answer. He said he would come back. And if Odin permitted you to see him- read him, maybe even question him. You could find out why Loki did what he did. Maybe even change his view of things, get him to be the brother Thor had once told you about.
You’ve been waiting for a long time. It’s been three weeks since Thor went back to Asgard. You had given up, not expecting him to return. But that’s when you saw the Bifrost on your balcony appear. But it disappeared just as quickly, only there was Thor, making his way inside, his mission included your presence.
“Y/N, it has been a while, my friend.” he extended his arms with a smile before engulfing me in a hug. You pulled away smiling.
“It hasn’t been that long, not even a whole month” You informed.
“Time flows differently in Asgard”
“I know, I know. So how was the trip? What was Loki’s punishment?” Curiosity filled your voice.
“Odin, my father. He sent my brother to prison for eternity.” Your eyes fell, you didn’t know why you felt concerned about him, nor why you felt compassion. You were worried about him. Aura’s can show a lot of things about a person, and his- his was a spiral of emotions. Anger, hatred, fear and betrayal. There was no sign of any positive emotions when you first read him at the tower.
“But, if made it so you can go speak to Loki, but only if you’re under my supervision.”
“You got Odin to agree? How?! I was sure he would decline”
“I explained that you could read him, find out what happened to the brother I once knew.”
“When do you want me to go?”
“As soon as you can, my father doesn’t take lightly to tardiness” A giggle escaped your lips.
“Okay, hold on let me sort some last-minute things and ill be right with you.” You had sorted through the last of your current mission report and packed a few small things in a backpack before making your way back to Thor.
“Okay, I think I’m ready” you readjusted your backpack while walking to the balcony, Thor not far behind.
“You might want to hold on” Giving him a questioning glance you held on to his waist. “Heimdall, bring us up” After a couple of seconds the Bifrost surrounded you. You shut your eyes in fear as you could no longer feel the floor. You slowly opened your eyes, you were scared but glad you did. The Bifrost was beautiful. A rainbow of colour surrounded you before you felt the floor at your feet again. You gathered your surroundings before releasing your grip on Thor. In front of you stood a man, removing his sword from the device in the middle of the room.
“Welcome to Asgard Y/N”
“You know my name? Heimdall knows my name!” You grabbed Thor’s sleeve in excitement.
“Of course, I see everything, I know everything within the nine realms.”
“Everything? Does that mean you see whenever someone is trying to conceive a child?” Your bluntness shocked the men around you. “What? I’m genuinely curious, he’s seen everyone naked!” Heimdall coughed into his fist.
“Uhm, no, I choose not to watch anything deemed inappropriate.” He clarified.
“Okay, that’s calmed me down, I was worried for a minute there.” Heimdall smiled, obviously used to your humour after watching over you for so many years. Thor had escorted you to Odin so he could speak to you personally. To say you were nervous was an understatement. You didn’t know how to hold a conversation with a normal person let alone a king. The walk there seemed long as if you had walked for hours. But in reality, it was only 5 minutes.
As you entered the palace you noticed how tight security was. Something must have happened here before Loki trie to attack us on earth. Thor stopped suddenly causing me to halt next to him. I looked up suddenly frozen, Odin’s presence, it was excruciating.
You knew you couldn’t say anything rash, you couldn’t question him either. You had never met someone with such a powerful presence before. You bowed without a second thought. I kept my position until Thor began to speak.
“Father, this is the Midgardian I informed you of. She holds incredible abilities, she might be the key to helping Loki” Thor's voice was followed by silence.
“And what makes you think she is capable of helping Loki” Odin's voice boomed through the halls, creating an echo that made me flinch.
“She explained her thoughts on his actions without even speaking to him. I believe she will be a great asset”
“I already permitted you to bring her here, she is under your supervision, Thor. If anything were to happen to, her blood is on your hands”
“Yes, Father. Thank you.” Thor bowed his head and turned, signalling me to do the same. Not allowing him to think you were a coward, you spoke.
“Thank you, Your Majesty, I shall try my best to make Loki the son you once knew. Please, put your faith in me. I will not fail!”
“Make sure you do not fail me, otherwise Loki will be the least of your troubles.” Odin snarled, obviously displeased with your presence.
“Yes of course” A small smile made it to your face before you bowed once more, taking your leave. Thor had escorted you to the prisons. Loki’s cell was to the left of the stairway as you entered. Loki had noticed you straight away.
“Brother! My my, what do we have here. The Midgardian that stayed hidden.” The smirk on his face was mischievous, much like his personality. The God of Mischief. You stood in front of his cell with Thor to your right.
“I’m a tactician I stay on the sidelines.” You were unable to place the confidence that took over your body, but you could bite back.
“Oh, but you’re much more than that.” Loki placed his forearm on the forcefield leaning on it. “You’re different, definitely Midgardian, but how you read me without my speaking was glorious.”
“Good so you know why I’m here.” His smirk fell off his face. “Don’t bother trying to hurt me, Thor will not leave my side. You won’t be able to attack me.” He lowered his arm and went to sit down on the bench in the corner. Thor opened the forcefield and entered, holding it open enough for me to walk inside. Loki glared at me, not wanting his deepest secrets revealed, by a Midgardian no less. You went to walk to Loki but was stopped by Thor’s grip on your arm.
“Thor, I’ll be fine, but if you want me to get a deep reading I need to get closer to him” I placed my hand above his as he loosened his grip. He tensed ready for any trick Loki might try. I walked in front of Loki and grabbed a chair to sit face to face.
“There’s a darkness in you that isn’t your own. It’s fighting your goodness, your natural aura.”
“Aura? There is no such thing as being able to see or read auras” Ignoring his comment you continued to stare at him, not losing eye contact.
“The colours, you’re naturally drawn to them. Greens and gold. There’s a hint of blue hidden within the darkness. That colour makes you sad, angry, frustrated. Why do you dislike blue so much” His eyes changed, no longer were they sarcastic and mischievous, but sad and vulnerable.
“Is it your heritage? Thor told me you were adopted. But still, you have a small similarity to Thor’s aura, you’re still Asgardian.” Loki saw in your eyes that you were nothing but truthful. Not one word that left your lips was a lie.
“What? No, that can’t be-”
“Why not?”
“I’m a Frost Giant, Odin stole me from Jotunheim as a Trophy, a way to bargain his way through if the Jotuns attacked once more.”
“Then if frost giants are blue, why aren’t you?”
“Odin altered my appearance when he found- when he took me”
“But you are Asgardian, Odin’s blood flows in your veins”
“I am not his son!”
“No. Not a son, but a relative of some kind.”
“How can you tell? You read auras?” Curiosity filled the room.
“People of the same blood give similar auras.”
“How can you be so sure?” Thor was eager to know, after finding out that Loki wasn’t his brother it broke him. If there was a chance that they were related- even distantly, he would take it.
“I’ve seen it, because of Clint. And his family”
“So Loki isn’t my brother? But a relative?”
“Yes, I can’t say what exactly but I could ask Odin. He might know something about this”
“Are you sure?”
“Positive-” I looked up at Thor. “I must speak to your father, alone.” You urged. Both Thor and Loki looked your direction. Both equally as confused and curious.
“Father does not allow just anyone to be alone with him.”
“I’m not just anyone” A smirk appeared on your face, much like Loki's when he knows- thinks he's won. “Let’s go have a chat with the Allfather” You stood from your position, Thor following before opening the cell. After you exited Loki looked at you curiously, with a hint of hope in his eyes.
“I will find out the Truth for you- even if I can’t tell you myself” He could tell you were sincere. Why would anyone be willing to do this for him? It intrigued him. He kept his gaze on you until he could no longer see your form. As you entered the great hall you had asked Thor to wait outside. Odin looked at you curiously seeing you make your way towards him alone.
“Odin, I must speak with you privately.”
“Privately? No one shall speak to me privately unless its Frigga or Thor”
“It’s about Loki’s origin. Unless you want the guards to know his birth mother, I suggest we have our privacy.” Odin’s eye widened, you hit a nerve. He signalled the guards to leave, and it stayed silent until he knew no one could hear us.
“What do you know Midguardian?”
“I know that Loki- even if his father is a frost giant, his mother was Asgardian. How she is related to you I’m not sure. But its royal blood- your blood.”
“How did you find this information?”
“Thor told you that I read auras correct?” Odin nodded, deeming the silence necessary. “Well families, that share the same blood have similar auras. And his aura- his Asgardian aura, is similar to Thor’s and your own. What can you tell me?”
“Who his mother is doesn’t matter”
“I assume she’s either dangerous or dead. Or both.” Odin seemed uneasy.
“I won’t tell either of them. Any information you tell me right now I won’t tell Thor or Loki”
“And why my dear, should I trust you”
“If you want me to clear his darkness, I must know everything”
“Not a word, to anyone other than myself”
“You have my word.” He sighed, composing himself. He hadn’t spoken about her in millennia, nor had he forgotten her.
“My daughter, Hela”
“You have a daughter?”
“Yes, My firstborn”
“So Loki he’s- he’s your grandson?”
“Yes.”
“That’s why you won’t kill him? He might be frost giant, but he is still of your blood” Odin was breaking. His shell was slowly opening.
“Does Frigga know?”
“No”
“How could you hide that from her? She- Her daughter has a son!”
“With a frost giant! She was already trying to overthrow the kingdom. Working with the frost giants- then she became pregnant with Lafeys child” He growled, angered by the memory.
“I see. Now that I know, I should be able to get a better read of your grandson.”
“You must not tell anyone of what we just spoke”
“I gave my word. I shall not tell a soul.”
“Leave” He ordered. And you had no reason to decline. You left the grand hall telling the guards that they could return to their post. Your figure leaned against the wall, your nerves catching up, making your breath heavy and unstable. You slid to the ground, seeing Thor approach you.
“Y/N? Are you alright?”
“Yes- My nerves just caught up with me that’s all. Plus, your father is a scary man” A giggle escaped your lips making Thor smile, happy to know that you were okay. How were you going to keep this secret you didn’t know. But you had to- you gave your word. And you’ll be damned if you broke it.
AVENGERS INFINITY WAR MEGATHREAD
-really doubt i'm gonna be able to finish this movie so we'll just see where i get to
- we already know how i feel about loki and thor, we don't need to revisit this
- ok but if i were going to revisit this, i mean come on, who wants to talk about "hela draws her power from asgard, same as you" cos i wanna talk about that
like what if that's the reason thor, god of thunder, king to a civilisation of warriors, was unable to fend off like, 4 dudes and a big purple dinosaur? the royal family of asgard draws its power from asgard, and without it, they are weak, they are mortal. maybe that's why heimdall is unable to just, you know, bifrost everybody off the fucking ship the minute it comes under attack. maybe that's why loki can't fucking conjure up a swarm of fucking microscopic knives to fillet the invaders from the inside out. MAYBE THAT'S WHY LOKI TRIES TO KILL THANOS WITH A FUCKING DAGGER. BECAUSE TAKE AWAY HIS POWER, TAKE AWAY HIS GODHOOD, WHAT DOES HE HAVE LEFT OTHER THAN HIS WILE, HIS TRICKS AND HIS BROTHER
WHAT IF IN SAVING THE UNIVERSE AND DESTROYING ASGARD, THEY'VE LOST EVERYTHING INCLUDING WHAT MAKES THEM GODS
somebody talk about this
- etc etc what if the reason loki is unable to attack the purple dinosaur with magic is because when he tackled thor earlier, he used whatever magic he had left to spare in order to heal him
checks out cos thor goes from flat on his face to swinging his fists in the space of like 30 seconds and the only thing to happen to him in between is said bit about loki tackling him
- why does heimdall save hulk? i mean, i could understand it if he were trying to aim the bifrost at thor and somebody somehow knocked off his aim and he accidentally saves hulk, but like, we've established that heimdall's loyalty is to the royal seat of asgard upon whom sits thor's mighty ass. thor who, in this scene, has just been incapacitated by a metal eggshell(?) and is at the mercy of their assailants. given heimdall's priorities, it is baffling to the point of inconceivability that he would preferentially save fucking HULK over his own king.
- if this next scene isn't the guardians of the galaxy coming across thor clutching loki's dead fucking body floating through space then i don't know why any of us are even here
- "he sent loki! the attack on new york was thanos!" makes no sense? like, if loki's scepter had the mind stone in it, which we established it did in the last movie when we broke it open to retrieve vision, then.....why didn't thanos just....take the mind stone in the first place? cos rock collecting is and has always been his goal?
what, do you think that just because you assert a thing makes us forget all the shit that happened before?
- i.....am actually with tony stark. why don't they just destroy the stones they have so that thanos can't get to them? oh, you made a promise? well promises change and circumstances change! you tell him tony! you tell that stupid fucker --
oh my god i'm gonna be ill
- i think the only person whose ego can match tony stark's is probably a neurosurgeon so 👍 i guess
-i love how we immediately went back to the "so dark can't see shit" aesthetic after ragnorak because ensuring that one's audience can SEE what is HAPPENING IN YOUR MOVIE is apparently for radical directors like taika waititi
- cannot believe that tony stark staring at captain america's phone number is being played with the same emotional intensity as thor losing his soulmate entire people
- honestly how many times is the mcu gonna invoke 9/11 imagery til someone calls them out for being terrorists
- lmao i know i said this before but peter's spidey senses tingling AFTER the giant alien anus has already started sucking up new york and it is right outside his window is fucking hilarious. that's just called using your eyeballs peter
- "friday notify first responders about the giant alien anus sucking up new york" lol like the first thing somebody did when the alien anus showed up wasn't to fucking call 911 GREAT IDEA TONY
- still can't believe that they let failed neurosurgeon dr strange do more magic than god of tricks and sorcery loki lol
- i know i rag on dr strange a lot about the fact that he's a neurosurgeon it's just that he sucks.
as a neurosurgeon eyy.
- i hate that peter parker has to be here!!!!! leave him alone!!!!!
- tony stark should not be allowed within 100 feet of children or minorities
- it is very weird to me that steve "brooklyn" rogers has an area code from georgia
- since when was hela a half-sister? ODIN'S DAUGHTER AND THOR'S BLOODED SIBLINGS OR BUST YOU FUCKING COWARDS
- i am very disappointed that thor is going to go get another weapon after we spent the whole last movie talking about how he is not the god of hammers
- i just need thor to have much more PTSD than he has right now. fucking hulk has ptsd. maybe they're saving the ptsd for later. one can only hope.
- i am glad that they are letting him be cleverer though
- THEY ARE LETTING VISION DATE A TEENAGER WHY
GOD. FUCKING GROSS.
- wait when did vision turn into a white man again? did i miss that movie?
- i am disappointed that vision the computer techno robot apparently has a penis. like what a stupid limitation to give your computer techno robot, gender. 🙄
- i think that the mass destruction of infrastructure and architecture in the MCU is because of the pg13 no blood limitation that disney has set? like there's no way to show destruction to the body, so one may only show the exponential destruction to one's surroundings. like imagine how much more dramatic intensity you could wring out of a regular fight scene would be if people were allowed to bleed?
- cannot believe that a computer techno robot and a witch are having a punch up with the bad guys. of all people to fight with something not their fists, it's these two
- wanda has no enhanced strength or durability? she's a regular teenager who's a bit witchy. the first time she got thrown through a glass door should have shattered her vertebrae. again i don't understand why we insist that everybody must have the same powers and capabilities when it's clear they don't. think about how much more interesting it would be if some avengers were more fragile than others and had to be given accommodations as such
- IT IS INCONCEIVABLE TO ME THAT FUCKING BLACK WIDOW (regular human), CAPTAIN AMERICA (enhanced human), AND FALCON (regular human with wings) CAN DEFEAT THE CHILDREN OF THANOS WHEN THOR COULDN'T UNLESS THOR (god of fucking thunder carved of steel and stone) WAS NERFED
- still don't understand how we'll lend aliens afro features but not afro hair, like, seriously? you're gonna dream up green aliens with gills who look like black people but imagining them with black hair is a step too far?
- the gap of commentary in this liveblog is simply because i do not care at all for the galaxy defenders
- "earth just lost her best defender" who? who does captain america consider earth's best defender? it's not thor; he doesn't know thor's presumed dead. it's not tony; he doesn't know tony's on an alien anus. who else has died so far?
- love how exhausted bucky looks. have always loved how exhausted bucky looks. love bucky.
- i forgot that tony was with peter parker. god i hate that.
- "i'm peter btw"
"dr strange"
"oh you're using the made up names then. i'm spider man"
ok that was cute, but peter's cute, we knew that already
- i want to fling both strange and stark into space and i'm having a hard time deciding which one to push first
- "you went to bed hungry, scraping for scraps" oohhhh thanos is just anti-poor people, he would literally rather poor people be dead than struggle, i get it nowww
this is on brand for mcu
- oh my god thanos gets 2/6 stones by torturing siblings in front of other siblings, seriously? you couldn't come up with 6 different ways to find his stupid rocks you had to reuse one twice?
- which one of thor's friends was stabbed through the heart....? fandral??
- "if i don't get my vengeance what more could i lose" more like what else is there eh? what else is there for a king of no people but their vengeance?
- CANNOT BELIEVE THEY GAVE HIM BACK AN EYEBALL JESUS CHRIST IF YOU DIDN'T LIKE THOR RAGNORAK JUST SAY SO YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO FUCKING
VEHICLE FOR AUTHORITARIANISM, NOTHING IS ALLOWED TO CHANGE, FUCK YOUR CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT I GOT MINE
FUCK
- i do enjoy that thor is now science fiction rather than fantasy, i don't think anybody knew what to do with fantasy cos fantasy is again, ultimately about conservatism and the status quo. so i do like that we're embracing the new and boundless for whatever that's worth.
- marvel is a cesspool of toxic masculinity. at no point are characters allowed to actually feel anything because weakness is uncool i guess and therefore unmanful. like thor lost ALL OF HIS PEOPLE. fucking ALL of them. he watched his brother die in order to save him. he is not allowed a single fucking response of mourning. i don't care if he's pushing it back because revenge or whatever, this is the sort of grief that rules you, which will bring all your load bearing structures down to heel, and they let him do nothing; he does not even rage. perfect control. smooth witticisms. why. why aren't we allowed to see his sadness?
- yo i can't believe red skull is a scifi villain now lol space nazis for real
- OH MY GOD THEY WASHED BUCKY'S WIG AND IT LOOKS SO BAD
Tumblr media
- michael b jordan was right btw wakanda is complicit in africa's exploitation
- i do LIKE black panther i guess in the way you technically like that cousin you met once when you were like 9 and never saw again?
Tumblr media
i like how we have here in wakanda the sears tower (chicago), the batman building (nashville), and the gherkin (london)
- ok but like, presumably not a death cult super technologically advanced wakandans who are deffo made of human flesh and human blood still arm their people with spears
i mean unless wakanda is also a death cult
Tumblr media
why is this chicks entire fucking face cgi'd she looks like a fucking cut scene video game character
- oh ok they have LASER spears, ok
so then why did they give bucky a fucking gun
- what is bucky supposed to be able to contribute here exactly, like fucking, again, he's spycraft isn't he? he's a one man, dead of night, operation go loud and then immediately silent kinda operation. why do they have him on the front lines of a fucking lock-step formation battle??
- "it will be the noblest ending in history" WHAT, FIRST COUNTRY TO EVER BE OVERUN BY ALIEN JACKALS??
- stormbreaker is just leviathan axe, somebody's said this already right
- omfg i'm so glad they're finally acknowledging that thor is OP as fuck and does not belong amongst the fucking squabbles of earth
-"titan was like most planets, too many mouths to feed not enough to go around, so i proposed a plan, dispassionate to rich and poor alike" JUST SAY YOU HATE POOR PEOPLE MCU. YOU CANNOT HAVE RICH AND POOR, YOU CANNOT HAVE DISPARITY, YOU CANNOT HAVE SOME WITH TOO MUCH AND OTHERS WITH NOT ENOUGH AND CALL IT EXTINCTION. THAT IS NOT A QUESTION OF OVERTAXED RESOURCES THAT IS A QUESTION OF RESOURCE FUCKING MANAGEMENT. IT IS AN ARTIFICIAL CRISIS IF THERE EXISTS ENOUGH TO GO AROUND BUT SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST HOARDING IT THAT'S WHEN YOU KILL THOSE PEOPLE AND TAKE THEIR SHARE. KILLING HALF THE PEOPLE IS THE KIND OF FUCKING SOLUTION TO INEQUALITY THAT RICH PEOPLE COME UP WITH
GOD. ITS LIKE NONE OF YOU EVER READ
-you've got the big fucking boss in an ambush AND YOU ATTACK HIM WITH A MAGIC SWORD STEVEN STRANGE?????
THIS FRANCHISE HAS NO IDEA HOW TO UTILISE MAGIC USERS FUCKING HELL
- when will somebody please utilise ironman like the one man artillery he fucking is WHY IS HE FIGHTING WITH HIS STUPID FISTS HE IS LITERALLY ONE CONTINUOUS CARPET BOMB JUST USE HIM THAT WAY
Tumblr media
cut of his arm CUT OFF HIS ARM YOU BLOODLESS SPINELESS USELESS FUCKING CUNTS . this is a manufactured crisis, KIND OF LIKE THE ONES THANOS LIKES I GUESS LOL
- dr strange could have very easily prevented or stopped quill from punching thanos but he didn't cos i guess even the movie forgets steven strange exists sometimes
- i like that the shield around wakanda has the same weakness as a poorly constructed chicken coop -- you always build into the ground a couple feet to stop the diggers man, come on, what is this, your first energy shield?
- oh disgusting, a girl boss moment. whatever you're all fascists.
- nobody adores martial might like fascists do fucking change my mind
- " avengers: not one person in this fucking cast is able to stomach ANY AMOUNT of personal sacrifice" more like
- "why did you give away the time stone?" "we are in the endgame" THAT'S NOT AN ANSWER THAT'S A FUCKING MOVIE TEASER FUCK YOU
- why didn't strange just trap thanos in a timeloop again? we've already established that is a perfectly acceptable way to deal with planetary annihilation. IS IT POSSIBLY BECAUSE NOBODY ON THIS WRITING STAFF KNOWS HOW TO DEAL WITH MAGIC
- THOR OP BLIZZARD PLS NERF
-CAPTAIN MARVEL SERIOUSLY THAT'S WHO YOU'RE GONNA SEND YOUR LAST PAGE TO JESUS FUCKING DISGUSTING
Heimdall, Protector of Asgard
(A.N: I FINALLY DID ANOTHER FIC IT’S ONLY BEEN LIKE 6 MONTHS)
Heimdall often considered himself a man of many duties. Protector of Asgard, Gatekeeper of the Bifrost - and occasionally, although it had less of a grand title, Stopper of Thor Doing Reckless Things.
It was the latter duty that took up a lot of his time. Even more so recently: what with all the chaos the realms had managed to fall into.
It was a curious thing, recklessness. Often in youth it had inspired both the young princes to do foolish, but ultimately harmless things. Some of Heimdall's fondest memories were those of the schemes Thor and Loki had attempted as children - sneaking biscuits from the kitchens, scrolls from the library, and occasionally trying to sneak past Heimdall himself for a glimpse at the Bifrost.
He'd often turned a blind eye to that last one. Let the Prince's think that they had somehow passed under the nose of the Gatekeeper, and watched them carefully as they looked at the stars.
But recklessness, Heimdall had discovered, came from more than just an innocent desire for mischief and tricks. It came from sorrow - from a world falling into disarray as image after image of a golden family was shattered. It came from rage. It came from helplessness.
Heimdall was rarely one to be reckless. He preferred to stay where he was in times of uncertainty, so much so that Frigga had once compared him to a mountain. Unmovable by others, but if a great enough shift appeared, capable of stirring the earth itself if it chose.
And through some naivety on his part, he had hoped Thor would follow in his footsteps. The prince seemed to be taking more responsibility for himself, had even joined a team of midgardians - two, if one was to count the companions of Lady Jane (which Heimdall supposed he did - he had a certain respect for those who turned their gaze towards the stars for answers).
Thor had returned home with his brother in chains, and Heimdall had hoped, prayed that this meant an end to things. A sentence passed, a debt settled, and life could almost return to normal.
But it seemed that was not to be.
Heimdall looked up at the stars, heaving a soft sigh.
"Hello, Thor."
A stirring from the corner of the chamber, and the young prince staggered out, a frown crossing his face.
"You're not even going to pretend that you couldn't see me?" Thor rested his hand against the doorframe, leaning heavily against the golden archway.
"Not at this time, no. Although I must admit, I hadn't expected to see you here,"
Heimdall turned from his position, golden eyes landing on the prince - a small feeling of worry nagging at his gut as he took in his appearance.
Decidedly not dressed for the royal court. Not even dressed for Asgard, by the looks of it. The Prince's usual mane of golden hair was tied back clumsily, an old cape and hood thrown over one shoulder. Standing there, holding the wall as if letting go would mean a sure tumble to the ground, Heimdall considered his judgement of the situation to be sound. It was strange. A strange situation.
"Are you not due at Loki's trial?" He continued, watching as Thor made a move to pace about the room, but apparently thought better of it - remaining in the doorway.
Unsure, afraid to enter perhaps. Or afraid to leave.
Thor smiled bitterly, a laugh that was tinged with something close to tears echoing off the walls.
"I wasn't permitted to attend, actually. Father considered me too close for my judgement to be sound, so…" Thor shrugged listlessly
"Here I am."
"Here you are. I take it you stopped at a tavern before arriving here to...talk, I assume?"
The question seemed to set Thor back a little bit - almost physically, with the prince taking a small step backwards.
“Do you really think so little of me?” Thor frowned, his voice suddenly sharpening with crystal-like clarity.
“That I would waltz in here in a drunken stupor to waste the time of, arguably, the most important man in Asgard?”
Heimdall chuckled, shaking his head.
The most important man in Asgard - well, that was certainly something.
Thor had always been liberal with his words - compliments, insults, flirts and challenges. Many people often assumed because of this that Thor didn’t possess a filter - that his thoughts journey to the open air was unchallenged, unbroken. But, that wasn’t necessarily true. The filter wasn’t broken - it was just refined. The prince was tuned to a different song, where some thoughts would be allowed to be aired, and others were not.
Feelings of pain and heartbreak were not befitting of a Prince of Asgard - a face that was shown to the universe was not supposed to crumble or break. At least, that was what was taught.
“Flattery will get you nowhere, Thor. And, to answer your question, no - I don’t think that,”
He paused, fingers tapping a slow rhythm on the side of his sword as he tried to align the words in his mind.
“I think that you came here, seeking the solace and comfort of a friend. Because you are in pain.”
“Pain?” Thor echoed, suddenly looking a lot smaller when placed before the brightness of the Bifrost.
In a plain tunic, with a travel-pack slung across his shoulders, he seemed...younger, somehow. It was a curious thing - battle usually had the effect of aging soldiers, turning bright eyes dark and haunted. And yet, the battles they all had fought - friend against friend, brother against brother - it seemed to plunge them all further back into the shadows than they had been. Things were complicated, it seemed. Or perhaps they always had been, and now the cogs of the grand machine were simply illuminated for the first time.
Heimdall had had to force himself from a cage of ice. He’d had to stand there and watch as Loki had torn apart the streets of Midgard - because that was his job. Watcher, guardsman, the Gatekeeper of Asgard. It was not his job to intervene. He just had to watch the skies, the stars, and try to figure out what it all meant.
If it even meant anything.
“Why…” Thor paused, blue eyes trying their hardest to maintain their focus.
“Why would I be in pain? ”
Heimdall sighed softly, turning his gaze towards the stars - and motioning with his hand for Thor to join him.
What is thought and what is said are often two different paths one person can take.
What Heimdall wanted to say was: 'Thor, how long have we known each other? Years for us, centuries for others. I can see everything across the nine realms, and I see you now. I see you, when your hands fidget behind your back at every royal meeting, while the rest of you stands still. I see you try to mask fear and sadness beneath gold and bravery - to force yourself into the mould of what Odin wants you to be. Beneath it, beneath all of it, I see you. I always have.'
What Heimdall said was:
"Tell me."
For a few moments, Thor continued to hesitate. Shifting his weight from one foot to the other, casting looks back towards the rainbow bridge - like someone wanting to ask for something, but unsure if they would be rejected for it.
Finally, Thor made a move forward. He stepped fully into the chamber, footsteps echoing off of the circular walls as he clumsily put one foot in front of the other, until he was at Heimdall's side.
A little too harshly, Thor sank down onto the golden stairs, clasping his hands together and looking off somewhere into the distance.
Slowly, Heimdall lowered himself to join him. Setting his helmet down on the ground beside them, Heimdall waited.
“My talents, as many as they are, do not include mind reading, your Majesty. If you wish to bare your soul I will not turn you away - but I cannot do much for you if you don’t speak to me.”
“You could’ve fooled me.”
Thor sighed, his face lifting slightly into a bitter smile.
“When I was younger, I used to believe you could see everything. The universe, the people - I even thought you could see into my mind. I used to lie awake at night, trying to think the silliest thoughts I could - just to try and make you laugh,” Thor shook his head, chuckling quietly.
“I thought it would make the nights more bearable for you. I didn’t like the thought of you being alone out here.”
“I remember.” Heimdall nodded.
"I just…" Thor shook his head, bringing his hands to his face.
"I should've been there. From the start, I should have known something, or done something - but I didn't, and now the world pays the price for it. Our family is paying the price for my cowardice, and I couldn't even attend his trial."
Thor broke off after that, roughly wiping at the sides of his eyes with an angry sniff.
“Ah, yes. Returning victorious from battle, where the enemy outnumbered you by the thousands. Defeating the armada, saving a world, and sparing the life of the one you were fighting - bringing him home to face justice,"
Heimdall nodded sagely.
"Truly, all the signs of a coward.”
Thor cast a look at him from the side of his eyes. “You’re not funny.”
“I am incredibly funny.”
Thor shook his head, but his deeply set frown began to break into a somewhat watery smile- still a ghost of what it could be, but it was there.
Slowly, the chuckles turned back to tears.
Thor sniffed, knuckles turning white as his fists clenched around the fabric of his tunic
"I just can't help but think that this is all my fault."
"And that is why you came here, then? To run from this?"
"No. Well, yes. Maybe, I don't-"
Thor groaned, tilting his head back towards the stars.
"If I can't be here for him now, then there is no use me being here at all. If I'm what caused this, then I might as well remove myself from the equation entirely."
"Thor," Heimdall lifted a hand, gently setting it onto the Prince's shoulder.
"That is foolish."
"It's logical. If...if there is a bug in a code, then you ought to remove it so the programme runs effectively."
"What?"
"It's something Stark said - I don't know. Midgard has an insect problem, I think?"
"Truly a strange place," Heimdall frowned, shifting in his seat to fully face the young prince.
"But running will not solve this problem, Thor. It is wholly an unpleasant matter - with no one party being to blame. But we cannot abandon those who need us most."
Thor sighed, shaking his head.
"I am only going to make matters worse. I'm a tool for destruction and I always have been."
"Who told you this?"
"The universe. I think the Norns want to kill me."
"Well, that's…a theory."
Heimdall shuffled a tad closer, placing both hands onto Thor's shoulders, turning him to face him.
"I wish I could take this pain from you. But this is a matter that involves us all. I cannot promise that your future here will be easy,"
He loosened his grip, lifting one hand to rest against the Prince's neck.
"But I can promise you that you will not face it alone."
It seemed to take a few moments for Heimdall's words to even register, before Thor's face crumpled. With a small, broken sound, Thor leant forward until his face was firmly planted against Heimdall's shoulder.
It was quiet, out in the Bifrost. It always had been - he himself wanted it that way. The quiet made it easier to concentrate. To shut out the rest of the world, and focus on what he needed to.
Heimdall held Thor close, and watched the stars pass above them.
Thor was still so young. They all were, really, compared to the grand scheme of things. Heimdall could see the outreaches of the universe and still, still, he felt blind to most of it. Things were more complex than the sun's and systems of the galaxies they lived in - events could not be predicted. Or outrun, at least, not forever.
The world kept moving and the stars kept shining, no matter what would happen, and there was some sanctuary to be found in that. The immovability of the heavens. To find a mountain in a storm, a rock to hold onto - it was rare. But not impossible.
If Thor needed a sanctuary for the night, then so be it.
Some things could be predicted. Thor's back would hurt in the morning from falling asleep on the steps of the Bifrost, and his head would hurt from taking Fandral's advice to drown his sorrows in wine.
The trial would end, and things would continue.
And no one would go through it alone.
Summary:  It’s easy to forget what he did.
Thor circled the Frost Giant's corpse trying to decide what to do about it.
“Well. This is a mess.” He said, staring down into his brother's azure face. “And I'm not just talking about body cleanup.”
“She doesn't listen!” Loki seethed. “Why does she always go headlong into danger; does she not realize what it does to me? I have never run so fast in my life!”
“Mortal women seem blessed with an excess of virtues.” Thor shrugged. “Curiosity, courage, and responsibility among them. Jane was no different. You remember.”
“I do. I also remember that she managed to avoid getting badly hurt, because she knew how to run and hide!”
“Perhaps. But she also-”
“Norns, I don't care! Get this thing off me, you great oaf!”
“Temper, temper.” Thor chided, rolling the body over with his boot. “You're so angry, you've gone blue in the face.”
“I will kill you.” Loki snarled, squirming free.
“You were certainly insistent that she not see you. Still keeping that secret?”
“Shut up. We have to get this cleaned up. We have to assess the damage, and we have to check the tunnels for more. How did it get here? Is it a relic from the old war? How many are down there?”
“I will go check.” Thor volunteered. “You should go to the healing wing and try to calm things down. No doubt it's a little hectic there right now.”
Loki nodded, waiting the few moments it took to regain his milky complexion, then the brothers parted ways for opposite sides of the palace complex.
                                                                                                                                                    *****
“So he was frozen in here? Like some kind of cell?” Thor glanced around the scintillating bubble in the ice. There was a large slot in one wall, where the giant had presumably been sleeping. There were objects strewn about, covered in ice, that to Thor, looked like they could be a Frost Giant's version of a soldier's mess kit.
Thor knew that no humans had been down in these tunnels. The government of Iceland hadn't even known they were there. This Jotun must have been here for a very long time, sleeping in the ice. Perhaps a trapped soldier, perhaps a lost traveler.
His journey was over now. It was actually rather unfortunate, Thor mused. Even though they had invaded and killed many humans, a Frost Giant could do much good on Earth now. They could generate ice at will. On a world where important glaciers were rapidly disappearing, a Frost Giant ally could be quite successful.
How frightened he must have been, to wake up suddenly, alone, not knowing how many years had passed. Still in the mindset of a war that had long ended, surrounded by enemies. Everywhere he ran, more enemies, more unfamiliar surroundings, more fear and desperation.
Yes, he had killed people on his rampage, and yes, Thor had killed him. But, as a warrior, Thor sympathized. This was tragic, all around.
“We need to clean this area out.” He said. “Gather and clean all of these objects. Do not proceed with digging unless accompanied by einherjar. We won't know if there are more until I bring Heimdall down here.”
“What shall we do if there are more, my king?” One of the clean up crew asked.
“We dig them out.” Thor said. “Slowly. Under my supervision.”
“Could we not just...leave them there?” One ventured. “Stop digging and leave them encased in ice?”
“The climate on this world is changing.” Thor explained to him. “There is a strong possibility that the ice will melt no matter what we do, and free them anyway. Best to do it under close watch, where they can be subdued, and their situation explained to them.”
“Mercy, my king?”
“It is a new age, and we are a people reborn.” Thor proclaimed. “We can try doing things in a new way.”
                                                                          *****
“She will be fine.” Bjarkhild assured Loki. “It turns out that our Blood Burn remedies are very effective on mortals. She will have sore spots on her arm for a few days, no more.”
“And Kolla?” Loki asked.
“Two broken ribs, a broken wrist, and a broken nose. She will have to stay under a Soul Forge for a week or so, but is expected to make a full recovery.”
“Very good. The messenger lad?”
Bjarkhild sighed deeply. “He will lose the arm. A terrible shame, but the damage was just too great. Perhaps if he had stayed laying down when he was hit, but pushing himself to go find you...”
Loki sat silent for a moment.
“We will Retire him.” He said finally. “It's the best we can do for him now. I will draw up the papers, if you will sign them.”
“Yes, your Highness.” Bjarkhild agreed.
Asgard loved it's heroes, and provided for them, whether military or civilian. A soldier had a pension, guaranteed care for if they were grievously injured during noble battle. A civilian, however, wasn't expected to put themselves in harm's way. For those that did, and suffered for it, there was the institution of Retirement. All of his needs would be taken care of; he would never be without food, home, quality clothing, or respect.
Bjarkhild was right. The messenger's arm might have been saved, had he simply lay still and waited for medics to come to him. But instead, he had found Loki, to warn him of the danger, which gave him the head start needed to reach you in time. This was a heroic act on par with any einherjar.
One day, they would have their technology up and running at the capacity Old Asgard once had. And if the man wanted it, a nearly seamless prosthetic could be offered. But Asgardians tended to cherish their battle wounds, which was why Odin never got an mechanical eye, and great-uncle Tyr never replaced his hand. They could have, of course, but they had earned those wounds in the defense of Asgard. It was a matter of personal pride.
“Shall I have you notified when I release her, or should I just send her to you?” Bjarkhild asked.
“Send her to me.” Loki said. “You need all your people here. How many are...”
“Beyond my help?” Bjarkhild finished. “Six. The other ten are in various stages of injury, but expected to pull through.”
Loki nodded solemnly. Six of their all-too-rare people.
He left the healing wing, noticing Gloa hovering anxiously in the corridor outside. He approached, and took her by the arm.
“Gloa, I want to thank you for-”
She whirled with a startled cry, and struck him across the face.
Loki quickly stamped down the stab of rage within him, watching the emotions fly across her features: Shock, realization, acceptance, and finally ownership over what she had just done. She jerked herself out of his grasp.
“Don't just grab me!” She snapped. “I don't care who you are, you don't have permission to lay hands on me whenever you want!”
“Gloa...” He growled.
“Don't talk to me right now. Not when your filthy kind has robbed me of yet another person I love!”
Loki flinched. Gloa's family had not come through Ragnarok whole. He knew she blamed him for it, for unleashing Surtr, and he didn't know how to explain that it had been Thor's idea without seeming like he was just passing the blame.
“Gloa, your father and uncle were brave warriors, and we honor them-”
“My father and uncle were heroes, and they died saving the people of Asgard!” Gloa interrupted. “I am satisfied for them. They rest in Valhalla with all those who died well.”
“Then why do you blame me?” He demanded.
“Not for them! For my brother!”
“Your brother?”
“You don't even remember. My brother was chosen as a guard in the Allfather's vault. We were all so proud.” Gloa scoffed bitterly. “The eve of Thor's coronation-the first one-he was guarding the Cask of Ancient Winters. He was murdered by invading Frost Giants, who sneaked in to steal it.”
And just like that Loki's throat closed, a fist of guilt squeezing his heart.
“I know it was you who let them in.” Gloa accused, tears rimming her eyes. “Maybe you didn't directly admit to it in that horrendous, self-aggrandizing play you had written about yourself, but I could read between the lines. The sick justification for your actions- all because you had decided that Thor was unfit to rule! That he didn't think things through, and he would get us killed through his bad decisions. But how are you any different? You were perfectly willing to sacrifice Asgardian lives-the very lives you claimed to have been trying to protect-for your own agenda! And it got you nothing! You shattered my family for nothing!”
Speechless, Loki stepped back under the sheer unexpected force of the tirade. What could he possibly say?
“You wanted to thank me for standing next to your little pet project? Pah! She is feeble, and brief, and weak, but she's not a coward, and she actually stood for our children. She may not be worth much, but she is still too good for you.”
Gloa stomped away, furious tears streaming down her face, leaving Loki stunned.
                                                                          *****
Thor gazed over the objects arranged on the table before him. All the scattered debris from the frozen cave, cleaned and brought to him for observation. These definitely made up a soldier's mess kit, and perhaps a higher class soldier, if the quality of the items we an indication. There were dishes and cutlery, hewn from bone and ivory, carved with foreign designs-Frost Giant art. There was decayed leather bedding and bags, waterskins, and a pack for rations that had long since rotted away.
And, untouched in the ice near where the giant had slumbered, a diary. Velum and ink from the strange sea creatures of Jotunheim, bound in leather, with ivory plates, it was a precious artifact from a thousand years before.
Thor picked up a page turning stick and very carefully opened the book. The ink that the Frost giants extracted from their oceanic beasts was thick, so thick that it raised slightly from the pages, making the letters look carved, rather than written.
Thor was not familiar with Frost Giant writing; until recently, he would not have thought they were literate at all. He had to wonder if examples of Frost Giant writing had been more common before their defeat at the hands of Asgard's armies, before the claiming of the Casket. What kind of dark age had that defeat plunged them into?
As Thor gazed at the unfamiliar runes, they resolved themselves in his mind into something he understood as if he had been raised on it; it was simply automatic. He read a few pages, absorbing what they revealed, until he realized that he could, in good conscience, read no more. This was meant for someone else.
This was meant for Loki.
                                                                           *****
Consequence. Every action set off a chain of events that never ended. Loki would never get the chance to be a good man again, because the fallout of his deeds would stretch out into forever. He would never actually be able to make amends. He could not restore Gloa's brother to life. All of eternity would pass without him. Without her brother, and without the other guard. He hadn't even considered their lives while he schemed. Hadn't known their names, nor attended their funerals. They really had just been a means to an end for him, acceptable casualties.
And he had considered himself more concerned with the safety of Asgard than Thor had been. What a fool! He had been exactly the same as his brother, only more secretive about it. Moreover, Thor's actions regarding Jotunheim, while irresponsible, had not actually cost any Asgardian lives. But Loki's actions regarding Thor's irresponsibility had. In a way, Loki had tried to play father to Thor, but he wasn't a father yet, and had failed in all of the ways he had blamed Odin for failing. And Asgard was poorer for his actions: Families shattered, people bereaved, grief and emptiness that would flow on until time ended.
Perhaps Gloa had been right all along. Perhaps he simply was the actual worst, undeserving of the happiness he had attained. Unworthy of you.
Certainly you had never done anything to endanger your world, or any others. You only had one murder under your belt, and it was not only self defense, but it had also been erased by the great reality reset. You were practically innocent. What had he actually done to earn your love?
All he had done was kidnap you and destroy your life. Take you away from your home and family, and force you into a new life and career, been rude, frightened you, kept secrets. Was still keeping secrets.
He shouldn't have yelled at you. He had been overwhelmed by fear, and adrenaline, the fog of war, but he still didn't have to yell. He had acted like an ogre to one of the few people who loved him.
His dazed wandering had brought him back to his only place of real safety; his bedroom, the black sheepsking rug in front of the faux fire. The place where he held you. He needed to hold you.
He ached for you. For your warm embrace, the comfort of you. Bjarkhild had said you would be released soon, mostly unharmed. He waited, wallowing in his torment.
He shot up to his knees the instant he heard you enter the chambers, hope suffusing him. He heard the door to your little room open and close, then nothing else.
His heart split and sank down, as he laid down flat on the rug.
Untitled Story (part 2 out of ???)
Buckle up for this boys and girls. Apparently I had a lot of pent up anger that I just let out in this chapter. By the time I got to end I was tearing up for some reason. :)
*******************************************************************************************
Strange watched tiredly as his monitors awoke from being asleep for weeks. He was constantly collecting data, reading and interpreting it was another story.
“You’re tracking the Tesseract’s energy?! That’s so smart, you can see every place he goes and for how long. You could make a map and try to figure out if there is a pattern.” Strange watched as Peter’s eyes lit up with an excitement he hadn’t seen or even felt for years. Without looking at the screen or keyboard Strange brought up the map Peter was talking about.
“Oh. Of course you already thought about doing that... sorry.” Peter then became visibly confused. “I-I don’t understand. Why would he still be in the same place? It’s been more than a week. According to your graphs he hasn’t been in more than one place longer than 3 days.”
“You’re must be reading it wrong or the machine is busted.” Strange turned back to the screen to make his own observations.
“No the boy is right. You would have missed your chance if we had not come here and dragged your sorry ass off that ugly floor. Where is the Ant Man? You said we would need him to get to Loki. We should not waste anymore time.” Now it was Thor’s turn to be excited.
Strange spun his chair around to face Thor. “Don’t be stupid. This is obviously a trap. I know you are used to doing whatever the hell you want, but that is not going to happen while you are with me. I make the decisions here, not you. I will not allow you to make things worse, because you think you need to save that person. He’s not even your brother. He’s just an asshole from a different universe. Your Loki is dead. He is dead and he is never coming back. You cannot and will not use this one to replace what you have lost.” Stephen was not conscious of the words coming out of his mouth if he had been he would have stopped way sooner. When he finally realized what he had done he was standing face to face with the God with his finger placed on his chest.
‘Shit.’ He thought.
Peter stood up and started talking... too fast for Strange to even begin to understand. He was probably trying to talk Thor out of killing him.
Thor just stood there not saying a word. He only smiled. Stephen couldn’t see his eyes behind those stupid black sunglasses Thor wore to hide any emotion. When did he even put those on?
Suddenly Thor came to life and twisted Stephen’s shaking hand. He spoke still with a cruel smile,”Listen here, Wizard. I am not listening to person responsible for everyone who died during that purple bastards war path. You told me you keep a watch list of beings from other realms that might be a threat to this one. You said Loki was on that list and you knew the second he was on Earth. Do you honestly expect me to believe that Thanos was not on that list. You know the guy who made it know that he wanted to collect the infinity stones to kill half the universe. Loki told me there was a bigger threat. I did not listen, but Tony did and he constantly worried about it. Tony worked to fight him. What did you do? Huh!? Tell me Wizard!” With every word Thor and gripped Strange’s hand tighter and tighter then he began twisting it.
“Thor stop, you’re going to break his hand!” Peter desperately pleaded with the God. Strange didn’t think Thor could even hear the boy anymore or even feel him as Peter tried his best to pry Thor away.
Stephen tried to answer, but the pain was too great. “...I-I.”
It became obvious Thor was not going to release his hand until he received an answer so Stephen tried again with a sharp inhale. “I didn’t think... h-he’d come... so... soon. I-I thought, I thought I had more time!” Strange yelled as the pain became too great.
“You didn’t see him coming?” Thor asked with a laugh. He let go of Stephen’s hand in favor of grabbing him by his outfit and slamming him into the wall. “You had the time stone. What do you mean that you couldn’t see him coming? So either you did not use the time stone to see future threats or you watched him kill those innocent Asgardians, my best friend, and Loki and thought that was perfectly alright because he hadn’t interfered with your precious Earth yet. Or even better you had watched the entire thing play out and only pretended to look at the possible futures for the first time with Peter and Tony.”
“...Yeah why did you wait so long to use the time stone?” Peter had stopped trying to help Strange.
‘You’re fucked now. Why does he feel so strongly about Loki? If it had been him who died, I doubt Loki would even blink an eye let alone get revenge. He would hide and wait for someone else to take care of the issue. But that is besides the point. Why did you wait?’
‘Why?’
‘Why?’
‘Why?’
“If you could see every terrible thing out there in the world and all the horrible things they could do, knowing that you had no chance in beating them, you would lock the damn thing away, and try to forget the nightmares that would soon become reality. I knew of Thanos. I knew of the Hell he would bring. I also knew we stood no chance. I decided to deal with the more beatable ones until I could figure out what to do. I didn’t tell Stark, because I knew what he would drive himself mad trying to create an armor to save himself. There was no point. Speaking of people who knew. What about Odin? I’m sure the God of Gods knew of Thanos. Why didn’t he try to stop him?” Stephen added the final blow with a smile.
‘Stop digging this hole.’
Thor spoke softer than he had all day. “My father kept a lot of secrets. It seems like everything was a lie or a secret. I thought I knew him, but now I understand I know nothing. Hel Loki knew more than I do. As much as I want to throw you through this wall for insulting him, I cannot defend him. I’m sure he had his reasons, but I do not know what they were. Maybe he was a coward like you or wanted to avoid the conflict for as long as possible. Odin is dead, but you and I are not. We must atone for our mistakes. I regret most of my past and I will do my best so that my future will not have the same fate. You on the other hand want someone to tell you that you did a wonderful job and that you made the right choices. You want someone to take those deaths off your conscience. I will not be that person, Strange. You have to live with your mistakes like everyone else. I hope eventually you will be able to live with yourself again. All the other Avengers are doing that. Quill and the Guardians were able to being Gamora back into their family. Steve lived the life he should have had in the first place. Clint has his family back. Bruce has made peace with the Hulk. Natasha, Tony, and I have not got our happy endings. You took that away. I’m going to make sure it happens and it is not selfish to do so. I do not need you, so if you are going to continue to stand in my way we can settle this here and now.”
“I’m trying to fix my mistakes Thor. I am afraid to make more. I do not want you to make anymore either. As much as I want everyone to have a good ending, life is never so kind to allow it. There are consequences for everything we do. I do not see how you will be able to achieve all of this without making the universe suffer. I do not want to be the bad guy, but if I have to fight you to make sure the universe does not suffer I will. In one of the futures I saw you bear the gauntlet. What you wanted collapsed the universe. Please listen to reason Thor.”
“Alright then, you made your choice.” Thor said devoid of any emotion.
As Thor released one of his hands to summon Stormbreaker, Peter grabbed Thor’s arm and yelled, “H-Hey! Calm down both of you, please! Killing each other will only make things worse. You both have good points so can’t we compromise?”
“No.” Both men answered in unison not breaking eye contact.
“No shut up! You’re both Avengers why are you fighting each other?”
“As I recall the first time you met the Avengers they were fighting each other.” Stephen was quick to add.
“That’s not fair first of all. Second of all... Thor do you think Natasha or Tony would want you to do this?” Peter’s muffled voice came out from under Thor’s arm as he was still holding on for what seemed like dear life.
“Tony started that fight because Steve wanted to protect the man who killed his parents. I think Tony would be happy if I killed the man responsible for taking him away from his family.” Thor’s voice started to break. “Loki would be angry that it was me who bested the Wizard instead of him.” A sad smile came to Thor’s lips. Strange swear he could see tears start to build up behind the sunglasses. “Heimdall would tell me that I am acting like a spoiled child rather than a wise king.”
“Wait whose Heimdall?” Peter asked lifting his face above Thor’s arm.
“Natasha...” Thor now struggled to get his words out. “Natasha would tell me it is okay and to not worry about her. She would not approve of this either. Strange I will figure out a way to bring them back without damning this universe to Hel. They did not give up on us so we cannot give up on them. I will help you fix what Loki has done, but I ask you to allow me to do something good. You do not have to help me, but please do not stand in my way.”
“I suppose we can work together until what Loki has caused is fixed. After that we’ll see if we can agree on what to do next.” Strange slowly raised his unbroken hand. “Deal?”
Instead of shaking his hand, Thor dropped Strange without another word and slowly lowered the arm that Peter clung to.
“I guess I’ll take that as a yes.” Strange sighed.
“Thank God.” Peter released the breath and stressed he didn’t know he had been holding and collapsed on the floor next to Stephen.
“Why do you guys only call me when you’re trying to kill each other?” A familiar voice whined on the other side of the room.
Scott and Peter looked up to see Scott looking annoyed. Thor still hadn’t moved since he set Peter down.
Scott waved his coffee around as he talked. “How come no one says, ‘Hi Scott we are going out for Tacos and we want you to come because you’re apart of the time and we like you. It’s kind of our fault that your under house arrest and all so we’d like to make it up to you.’ Don’t get me wrong I would do anything for Ste- I mean Cap. He said I could call him that. Because we are good friends and- hey is he okay?” Scott finally noticed Thor and how he still hadn’t moved. “How you doing Buddy?” Scott asked Thor like he was talking to a 3 year old and started to reach his hand out to pat Thor on the back to Peter’s horror.
“Scott, you’re here to set up the universe travel thing for Strange... remember? Can you show me how it works?” Peter jumped up and pulled Scott away before he could make contact with the unpredictable mess Thor currently was. He didn’t want to leave Thor and Strange alone together, but leaving Scott in the room would only guarantee a fight.
“...I guess I could.” Scott slowly made his way past Thor and to the other room where his equipment was. Before he was completely out of the room he glanced back at Thor. “I definitely need to know what is going on with that though. He’s freaking me out.”
“Yeah he’s scaring everyone today, it’s okay.” Peter shoved Scott forward out of the room. “Please behave you guys.” Peter added as he left.
Stephen directed his attention to Thor. “Are you broken or what?” When he didn’t get a response he decided it would be a good idea to throw a loose screw at Thor’s head.
Throw grabbed his glasses and broke them. He then threw them at Stephen. “I was trying to calm myself. Bruce taught me some breathing techniques to use when I get angry. I told him of course that it was stupid and I would never use it. But now I see the point. He must use it to stop ripping people like you to shreds.” He stretched his hand out to Strange.
“You’d lose.” Strange said standing without Thor’s help.
“I’d never lose to a coward.” Thor smiled and without another word left to join Scott and Peter, leaving Strange and his broken hand alone.
*******************************************************************************************
“-need to test it. I tested it last time, so I’m not doing it this time.” Scott stopped when he realized Thor had joined them. “Hey Thor you look like you’re not scared of death why don’t you test this.”
“Scott-” Peter was in the process of telling Scott of how much of a bad idea that was when Thor interrupted.
“Alright.”
“Awesome, go get your suit on and we’ll see if I hooked this thing up correctly, sound good, big buy?” Scott ran over and grabbed Thor’s suit.
As Peter heard Thor pass Strange on his way to change he heard them say some incredibly not so nice things to each other. “This is a bad idea and we should stop now.” Peter whined as he brought his hands to his face.
“It’s too late for that.” Strange yelled from the other room.
Eventually Thor came back into the room. “Alright just stand on that pad and give me a second. I need to figure out where to send you where you won’t cause damage.
Strange laughed from somewhere else in the Sanctum.
“How about...” Thor proceeded to give a very specific time.
“Why that one?” Scott asked.
“Why not?” Thor shrugged.
“Okay obviously we shouldn’t do that one.” Peter told Scott.
“What’s the worse he could do in a few seconds? It may not even work.”
“Scott no.” Peter pleaded.
Thor smiled sweetly.
“Aw look it that face. I trust him. You got it Buddy!” Scott quickly typed in the coordinates and time and pushed the go button before Peter could stop him.
“Scott!” Peter yelled.
“Dude i’m going to listen to a God over you. Strange may have a death wish, but I do not.”
*******************************************************************************************
Thor once again felt the familiar pull of being ripped from his current point in time to one that had already unfolded. 10 seconds ago Thor was sure he wanted to do this. Now he wasn’t so sure as he felt his feet hit solid ground again. He didn’t dare open his eyes. He knew the irony of his actions. He had been yelling at Strange all day for being a coward and now he couldn’t open his eyes and witness his nightmare yet again. He couldn’t change anything in the nightmare, but now he could. He just needed to open his eyes and rip off the return switch off his suit.
“Dread it. Run from it. Destiny arrives all the same.” A voice pierced through Thor’s thoughts. Normally those words would be the last thing he would before he woke drenched in sweat and tears. These words would wake him up again, but instead of seeing his tv displaying a game he fell asleep during he saw a ship on fire and some rubble.
Thor slowly stood until he could see over the rubble. He had to know. Loki threw his life away to save his. Something had to have happened that Thor missed. It happened when Thanos was giving his speech.
Once over the rubble Thor could see that he was behind Thanos. Thanos did stand where Thor was moments ago before he dragged past Thor closer to his captive brother.
He looked past Thanos to his goons who were entranced by what their dipshit ruler was saying.
Thor remembered he didn’t have much time left and as searched for Loki he grabbed his return switch. He stopped when he realized Loki was staring right back him. Tears quickly fell from Thor’s tear ducts and made their way down his face.
He wanted to tell Loki not to worry because his big brother would protect him like he promised all those years ago. That everything would turn out okay this time. It was and still is a good idea for Loki to go to Earth.
He watched Loki’s expression change like he had a million times in his dreams. Loki then turned his head to Thanos.
Thor’s finger’s brushed up against his return switch as he felt himself be pulled away.
When he saw Strange, Peter, and Scott all arguing he screamed. “NO, I COULD HAVE SAVED HIM!”
“Thor what did you do?” Peter asked calmly as he could.
“Nothing. I could have if you just let me-” Thor dropped to the floor in defeat.
“No you could have screwed us all. We made a deal. You can’t pull crap like this anymore. I wondered what that time could be. Your lucky I figured it out and pulled you out when I did.” Strange scolded. He then turned to Scott.
“Hey sometimes the button sticks! I tried to pull him out sooner.” Scott threw his hands in the air.
“We know it works now. I would like to get this mission over as soon as possible, so everyone get ready.” Strange said as he walked out.
“Shouldn’t we get more people?” Peter asked when he realized Strange and Thor would kill each other if they went alone.
“You’re not going, kid?” Scott asked surprised.
Peter felt his stomach drop. “I-I...” The fights with Thanos and Beck popped into his head.
Scott quickly put his hand on Peter’s shoulder bring him back to reality. “Hey don’t worry about it. I need help watching and controlling everything anyways. I’m sure those two will be fine.” Scott smiled reassuringly.
Peter looked back at Thor who was still having a break down on the floor.
“I’ll go in there if things get ugly, okay?” Scott pat Peter on the head and walked over to Thor. “We’ll find a way Buddy. Just hold on a little longer.”
Thor cleared the tears from his face and nodded. “Thank you not currently tiny man.”
What Universe does Thor: Ragnarok Take Place In? Part Two
I repeat my disclaimer from the last post in this series. If you don’t want to see criticism of Thor: Ragnarok, then a) don’t read, b) filter your tags, c) block me, or d) any combination of the previous.
For Part Two I’ll explain the characterization discrepancies between Thor: Ragnarok’s characters and those it shares through the MCU. These characters are Thor, Loki, Odin, and Bruce Banner.
(No, I didn’t forget Heimdall and the Warriors Three. I don’t see any issues with Ragnarok’s portrayal of Heimdall—correct me if I’m wrong, I’d love to discuss it—and unfortunately we don’t have enough time with the Warriors Three to tell.)
I’ll start with pre-Ragnarok Thor.
Thor, as I pointed out in Part One, has a violent temper, and his recklessness endangers his brother and friends. He starts out Thor (2011) arrogant enough to try to pull rank on Odin. He cajoles his friends into joining him on dangerous missions. He tends to look down on Loki, but doesn’t visibly enjoy seeing him in pain, and cares what happens to his brother to some degree (he’s distraught when Loki seemingly dies in both Thor movies, and saves Loki from the implosion bomb). He eventually learns to cool his temper to some degree (come later in Thor (2011) and later movies), though he still has lapses (when he Mjolnirs Tony for getting between him and Loki, then Cap for telling him to drop Mjolnir in Avengers (2012); when he nearly punches Loki in the face in TDW, when he chokes Tony in AOU). He learns to talk things out before fighting (he talks to the Kronan in TDW before they...uh, fight, and he tries to talk down Ultron in AOU with “no one needs to break anything”). Thor starts to question Odin’s authority (when Odin basically says he’d let all of Asgard die if it meant killing the rest of the Dark Elves in TDW) and defy his decisions. He takes situations seriously when they warrant it (note his face when Ultron starts snarking). He cares about Jane quite a lot (he gets her notebook back in Thor (2011), comes to Earth when he thinks she’s in danger in TDW, and brags about her to Tony in AOU).
Now, Ragnarok Thor.
Thor has always patiently put up with Loki’s assaults (will get to these in Loki’s section) without fighting back, losing his temper, or doing anything to prevent them. He openly, shamelessly manipulates Bruce/Hulk (telling each that they’re the one he prefers), Valkyrie (shaming her when she doesn’t want to help him), and Loki (the elevator speech, and the one with the obedience disk). He grins when Loki’s twitching in pain on the ground from the obedience disk, and leaves him there for an unknown length of time where Loki could’ve easily been found and executed. Thor’s back to attacking other realms on suspicions without negotiating (he goes to Muspelheim and kills the king and anyone who tries to protect him). His violence is back—he effectively threatens to smash Loki/Odin’s head in if he doesn’t reveal himself, backs Loki into a couch with Mjolnir to his chest, and looks like he’s about to attack Loki when Odin dies. He’s back to worshiping the ground Odin walks on (after learning that Odin conquered and slaughtered his way through the Nine Realms, he still looks to him for guidance). He quips constantly, no matter the situation (see...the entirety of Ragnarok). He dismisses Jane with a line about a mutual dumping.
Huh?
Loki’s turn.
Loki, as I pointed out in Part One, prefers to negotiate rather than fight, and tends to think ahead. He’s highly intelligent and strategic (he realizes in advance that Thor will get them into trouble on Jotunheim and works out how to get out alive, he realizes that the relics in the vault are stolen, he doesn’t buy Odin’s initial story about taking him in out of compassion, he quickly figures out how to overpower Odin/where to put him/how to get him there/how to get Thor’s friends out of trouble). He has legitimate reasons for everything he does (see Part One). He’s generally loyal to Thor, outside of extreme circumstances like experiencing a mental breakdown or getting anything from coerced to tortured by a mad Titan (his betrayal in Thor (2011) comes as a shock to Thor, and Avengers (2012) didn’t really have anything to do with Thor). After Odin and Frigga lied to him, and Sif, Heimdall, and the Warriors Three betrayed him (as did Thor by agreeing to come with them, technically), Loki doesn’t trust easily, and is always on guard. He refuses to tolerate manipulation from his family (he denies that Frigga is his mother when she makes acknowledging Odin as his father a condition of that, and doesn’t accept for Odin’s hypocrisy). He’s quite skilled at psychological manipulation and lying (he knows exactly what will keep Thor down when he lies that Odin’s dead), and knows how to act (he plays Odin flawlessly enough that Thor doesn’t notice in TDW). He’s anything but lazy (he definitely works at his plans in his first two movies, and in TDW...Svartalfheim and after speaks for itself). He’d make a good ruler (“for all his grave imbalance, Loki understood rule as I know I never will”). After Odin and Thanos, he’s not great with authority figures (he’s...less than respectful of the Other—“if your force is as formidable as you claim”—and he sasses Odin relentlessly in TDW). He feels fear but doesn’t act on it (he’s scared on Jotunheim but fights anyway; he’s scared of the Other but doesn’t run; he’s cool and collected upon his defeat in Avengers (2012); he’s poised with Odin during the trial). He only acts egotistical in Avengers (2012) under the influence of the Mind Stone; otherwise he wants to be accepted as Thor’s equal. He’s genuinely mentally ill (he attempted suicide, and probably has serious PTSD after Thanos—if only the movies showed that kind of thing).
What’s Ragnarok’s Loki like?
Loki’s needlessly violent (the snake story), and has no planning ability whatsoever (he doesn’t have a better plan than ‘get help’). He’s pretty stupid (putting Skurge of all people on Bifrost duty, calling the Bifrost to get away from Hela when she was in Bifrost-range, not noticing the obedience disk, etc.). He doesn’t have a reason for doing anything other than “I’m a trickster, I can’t help myself”. He’s always betrayed Thor compulsively. He’s...not exactly on guard (he doesn’t think to carry a weapon as Odin, and he trusts that the Grandmaster will keep his word and not execute him if he brings in Thor). Loki does what Thor wants when Thor tries emotionally manipulating him. He doesn’t notice when Thor tried reverse psychology on him. He’s terrible at acting (he completely foils Odin’s speech and behavior). He’s remarkably lazy (he’s laying on a couch eating grapes when Thor shows up). He’s pretty bad at ruling (the Nine Realms are in chaos). He’s fairly obedient to authority figures (he ingratiates himself to the Grandmaster and doesn’t talk back once). He’s a bit of a coward (he was scared when Thor showed up, “bring us back”, he’s visibly afraid of the Grandmaster, “I have to get off this planet”). He’s an egomaniac and attention hog (the statue, the play). He “tries...to embody this idea of a tortured artist, this tortured, gothy orphan”—no real problems at all.
Are these supposed to be the same person?!
Okay. Odin.
Odin is massively hypocritical, manipulative liar with tons of blood on his hands (the first part needs no explaining besides “watch the movies”; for the second, Loki first implies, then states outright, that Odin’s responsible for a lot of death, and neither Odin nor Frigga correct him). He doesn’t let Thor make his own choices (he doesn’t even consider that Thor might not want to rule; he wants Thor to be with Sif instead of Jane; he won’t listen to Thor’s suggestions about the Dark Elves). He’s worn down Loki’s self-esteem his whole life by favoring Thor, and he’s outright cruel to Loki later (“No, Loki”; “your birthright was to die”; “Frigga is the only reason you’re still alive and you will never see her again”). He never admits his own faults (he never takes any responsibility for any of the death he’s caused, never admits to the part he played in Loki’s downfall) except to hurt people (“yes, I was a fool—to think that you were ready”). He doesn’t express affection to his sons, and any he has is hugely conditional—as soon as they step out of line, he gives the guards permission to kill them (“by any means necessary!”).
Time for Ragnarok Odin.
Admittedly, he’s still a massively hypocritical, manipulative liar with tons of blood on his hands (see: everything involving Hela). After death, Odin controls Thor’s choices even more than before. He praises Loki aloud (“Frigga would’ve been proud”). He admits a mistake (“I’ve failed you”) in a way that, well, doesn’t immediately hurt anyone. He shows open affection to both Thor and Loki (“I love you, my sons”). He’s generally considered wise and benevolent.
Wait, what?
And now, Bruce. I don’t know as much about him, so his will be short. I’d love to see more on him if anyone has suggestions.
Bruce is very intelligent (he’s a physicist who can keep up with Tony). He’s not panicky; he’s usually quite calm and mild-mannered (see Avengers (2012) and AOU). He hates killing people as Hulk (he’s unhappy after the Hydra bust at the beginning of AOU, and he’s miserable and guilty enough to leave after Johannesburg). After he de-Hulks, he knows he’s most likely killed someone or at least caused a lot of damage.
Then there’s Ragnarok Bruce.
Bruce has 7 PhDs, but his shown intelligence is...questionable: on an alien planet where no one knows who he is, he thinks he’s supposed to disguise himself as Tony Stark. Without Hulk he’s considered useless. He’s openly anxious (“I think I’m freaking out”; his reaction to Sakaar in general). He doesn’t mention the fact that two years straight of being Hulk is probably going to mean a lot of damage and a lot of people dead. He shows no grief or distress due to it.
Yeah...no issues at all....
Odin’s sudden appearance of warmth isn’t without explanation. It could easily be his attempt to make Loki guilty for his anger (since Odin’s last words would’ve seemed kind), thus encouraging him to help with Hela to make up for it. Other than that, they’re irreconcilable.
Thor cannot be both sadistic and non-sadistic.
Loki cannot be both completely stupid and smart.
Odin cannot be both “wise and benevolent” and cruel and controlling.
Bruce cannot be both ignorant of the damage Hulk causes and deeply distraught over it.
These sets of traits cannot exist in the same characters in the same universe without reasons for the change within that universe. Ragnarok provides no such reason, which creates a stark gap in continuity.
There is no cinematic universe without continuity.
Ragnarok clearly disregards the canon of the MCU. Therefore, it cannot be part of that universe.
As I’ve suggested to @lucianalight, I propose that we use the term “Ragnarok Cinematic Universe,” or RCU, for all movies that use Ragnarok’s personal canon.
On Endgame: Tony, Thor, and Loki
So, Endgame spoilers below. Ye have been warned.
.
.
.
It was a good movie. It wasn't Infinity War, but.
You know, I want to be eloquent. I want to say something meaningful. I want to do something. But I can't. God, I can't and it hurts.
Loki...is my favorite character overall, and Thor and Tony my favorite Avengers. I'll unpack this from the bottom up.
I knew Tony was going to die. Did I want him to? No. Did I pray I was wrong? Desperately. But I have the uncanny misfortune of being right and Tony died. It was bitter. Pepper is what made it easier for me. When she bowed over him and told him he could rest, her strength and love radiated like aloe. I respect Pepper so much. But I'm still freaking ticked that Tony died. He had a kid! She needs her dad! That was like the point of the last ten years! And Peter...oh goodness, Peter! I just, Tony hurts.
And Thor...! Oh gosh, I don't even know where to begin! The whole point at the end of Ragnarok was Thor accepting his place as king, right? But what's this? He lets himself go after killing Thanos to gain empty vengeance for a brother he makes no reference to in the film. I mean, I liked the wild hair. It was very Odin, very Viking, I think. But Thor becomes an alcoholic who yells at kids playing Fortnite and it doesn't seem right. I understand the trauma he's gone through. Believe me, his I've followed and cared for more than that of any other Avenger's. But he's... he's not himself. He's not Thor. Not really. And it hurts. But I appreciate him making Valkyrie...Queen of Asgard?...and going off with the Guardians. Thor in GotGv3? Yes, please. And make it have closure!
Closure! Which brings me...to Loki.
Oh gods.
I knew as soon as I read Tom Hiddleston hadn't attended the LA premier that something wasn't right. I've spent the last year hoping against the winds and wishing on moonbeams that Loki would live. That Loki would come home. Would...do something. And he didn't.
I have a...very real problem, I think, in that while I love tons of characters, I tend to fixate on one specifically until it's a borderline obsession. I don't think I have an obsession with Loki (others may beg to differ), but my love for him outstrips that for most other fictional characters save Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars. I say that to say, I was...not outright depressed. It wasn't worth a full depression, because real depression is serious, but the happenings of Infinity War weighed on me like a dark cloud that took months to shake. Thousands of words written with pain and lost love in mind and endless nights of insomnia where all I could do is ask why. I even went through the stages of grief.
Okay, maybe I'm a bit obsessed. But it's Marvel. It's Loki. It's okay.
No, it's not. It's just fiction.
But fiction shapes us into who we are...
Loki has been such a big part of my life since I was...gosh, thirteen? His smile and the promise of magic drew me into the world of Norse mythology. It led me down paths of mystery and myth that I would never have gone down without his influence. Loki has literally shaped parts of my life and has been a major influence even beyond the MCU and comics, as a character of lore, for years. His is the single character who hovers beyond my vision as I write and create. Kinda like an imaginary friend.
Oh gosh, I am obsessed.
Okay, I'm rambling. So basically, Loki means so, so much to me and I've been hoping on the wings of a prayer that Endgame would fix what shouldn't have been broken. And it didn't. So screw Endgame. This and everything else, just screw it!
I'm so confused. Is our Loki the 2012 version, off with the Tesseract? Is that a seperate timeline from the one 2014 Thanos left? If it is, that'd mean there could be a timeline where Loki is King of Asgard (as Odin) without fear of Thanos, in a reality where Thor doesn't search for the Infinity Stones and Ragnarok is different. I mean, I like that idea, but. Also! Didn't Bruce tell Thor they could get the other Asgardians back? And Bruce snapped, so did he restore them, too? Is Loki alive on a ship (half a ship?) out there with Heimdall and the other Asgardians? Is Thor going to find him and them?
What even is going on?
I went into this movie clinging to a fragile hope and penny wishes, but now I feel a twisting coil of heat inside that makes me feel a touch ill. The rest of me is cold, and in shock, and full of rage.
Endgame was spectacular. A cinematic masterpiece, in my opinion. But it held no real consolation. It didn't balm my soul. It tore back its cover and exposed it to a frigid wind. I couldn't watch it again anytime soon. I just want... consolation.
And it's so, so, so stupid how I'm this dependant on a fictional character. That his wellbeing and happiness have, quite literally, shaped my own on numerous occasions in the past. But this is how it is. I now have to deal with the further consequences of it, and the drawn out anticipation for answers I'm beginning to believe I may not like or even want.
I think Marvel and the Russos are cowards who're scared of how popular Loki is with fans. Way back in 2014 people talked like Loki was going to lose fans to all the new characters that were coming into the MCU. And maybe he has lost a few. But not like they talked about, no. People still care so much about this character (yay! I'm not the only obsessive nerd!) and we want him treated well. We want him to get the same respect every other character is afforded. Even Thanos got respect and he's literally the worst (worse than Hela, even), so what makes our Trickster Prince less worthy?
I'm serious. Is it the cow helmet?
Anyway, that's my raw emotional rant coming off of Endgame. Here's to the long, long...long waits for Guardians 3 and the Loki TV series, which will have answers...just very distant ones.
I guess I'll start my Norse adaption of Phantom now, then. I've got nothing else to do now.
Silver-tongue and the Sovereign Part 1 [Loki Laufeyson x OC]
Tumblr media
Word Count: 1000+
Warnings: Domestic Abuse? sorta, violence,
Another boring day in Trihlorre, I was being constantly looked down on due to my adoption from the land I was birthed in, Northiem; I know not of my true parentage and have instead been taken in by these egotistical cowards, who are now considered my family by many, but not I.
I am Lunera Atlene, Goddess of solemnity and the mind, my family is waging a war, they do not even know the consequences of, it is a war they will not win, but alas, they are too naïve to even consider their spiteful daughter's point of view; Regardless, I was sent into the depths of Asgard, to the yearly Gala they have, to spy and find out important information – which I knew would be unlikely, even with the numerous people of great power.
Many pillars punctured the roof in order to support the oversized roof above my head, in all truth, I had no idea whatsoever of where I was headed, I passed a few guards, who's stray eyes wandered upon my tall figure as I glided through the halls, that's when I heard the voices echo, that's where I then followed.
I was dressed in a silk, green dress with ribbons and a cape, various precious jewels peppered around me and had been embroidered delicately by hand.
After the countless steps I took, I reached where the noise was coming from, voices had tackled the classic music into substitution, all people with big egos were what I could sense, tsk, tsk, how foolish they were- buried in their own self-worth and plethora of greed; this would eventually be their undoing.
Many couples dressed in stunning, priceless jewels and gowns- hues of bright colours and patterns, carelessly littered the ballroom, feigning their love for one another- and those, the few that were real, disgusted me... How could they claim they had truly felt love? When they had not felt the wrath, and scars it left behind; it made me feel ill, but I had to focus on what I was really here for.
I tried to look inconspicuous, little did anyone suspect, I was incognito- and for reasons not of my own, which infuriated me immensely, I was but only a slave to them, whereas in reality, I was so much greater- than they; I dimly grabbed a glass of they drink they were serving.
The aroma wasn't anything different to what I expected, mead, typical- I downed the glass knowing the effects wouldn't become anywhere near prominent before I elegantly placed the glass on the table and exited the room in search of adventure.
The shadows danced off the walls, but, it only humoured me as I continued deeper and deeper into the infamous castle, I heard footsteps of what I could only assume was a guard, before I tried to hide- and failed, as I was shoved against the wall, the cold brick tickling my back.
"Well, well, well... what do we have here?" the man glowered, as he chuckled amusingly- almost as if he had just made me a victim.
His appearance was dark and eerie; his green eyes matched his suit, his black hair was slicked back as an attempt to keep it tame, a mischievous smile danced its way across his pale face... this could only be one man, Loki.
"None of your business, fool" I spat in retaliation.
"Feisty, just how I like them... Oh, but it is... you see, when some fair maiden is snooping around my dearest house, it is my job to make it my problem" he mocked, tracing my face with his finger.
"have you no respect Loki? I am far from what you dismiss me as, a 'fair maiden', be it? I do not think so, you have reached far beyond into something you wish you had not. I could rip your innards from your body if I wanted" I said darkly.
Loki chuckled darkly "have I really pried into something you wish I had not?".
"If only you knew... I am not going to elaborate for a nosey trickster such as yourself" I said plainly.
"You humour me, Lady...?".
"Ha, you think I will tell you that? Then you are an even bigger fool than I once thought, no, to you I will remain nameless" I taunted.
"Amusing. Regardless, I will find out who you are... You never answered my question, what are you doing down here in the archives?" he chuckled, still pinning me to the wall.
"to answer your question, I got lost... I was trying to get back to the ballroom" I lied, effortlessly- although I assumed he could see straight through it.
"I see... I shall escort you back then" he laughed, not believing in my lie.
"If you wish, though, I do not require it" I dismissed as he moved backwards to let me walk freely.
"What brings you to this amazing Gala?" he asked as we walked back, sarcasm dripping from his every word.
"If I told you that, I'm afraid it would put me in some trouble, and that, I do not need right now- not that my family would care..." I trailed off.
"oh? You have family issues as well?" he asked, fastening his pace so he was walking beside me.
"do you take me as a moronic creature? If I revealed that, you would know why I was here" I said strictly, getting nervous- I didn't like to talk about it.
"fair enough, but, I will find out" he replied, as quick as lightning.
"that I do know, and whenever you do, it will be fine, just not now- it will be too risky... I would tell you but, trust is something I don't have with many, especially you"
"Very well. I suggest you do not 'accidently stumble' upon the archives again, especially if the guards – or heaven forbid, Odin catches you" he warned uncharacteristically.
"that, I will not do, I appreciate the warning Loki. I believe we have arrived at our- or my, destination" I nodded gratefully, as we walked into the hall once more.
Some classical music lulled the room, making the talk die down, "Would you like this dance?" Loki asked, placing his hand on my waist.
I chuckled, glancing down at the floor "I feel that if I disregard your invitation... You may be displeased- I wouldn't want such an offer to go to waste though. Don't think I will ever listen to you, because you are mistaken".
He raised his hands in surrender, "I wouldn't dare hit a woman, unless of course I had to".
"You would be right about that- let us not hesitate" he grinned widely.
Loki gently placed his hands either side of my waist, while I placed mine of his shoulders "you know, you are naïve to think that anything will come of this" I explained.
"Oh, I know, but it won't stop me from trying to get to know you" he laughed.
Everyone's attention was averted to the two elegant souls, gliding on the dancefloor "what? Do you all have nothing better to glare at... voiceless-pillocks, the lot of you" I hissed.
They glared for a while longer before they turned back to what they were previously doing, "hmm? She has class? Who would've thought?" he muttered to himself.
"you won't be surprised when you find out about me, although I don't believe you'll find much, apart from my adoption records" I said firmly.
Loki cocked his eyebrow in surprise, "trust me when I say, I know all too well, how that feels" he said sympathetically almost? No, more like agreement.
"I don't trust you but I believe you Loki, it is time for me to leave, I have got what I needed- maybe even a little more, thank you for your hospitality" I bowed before I exited, leaving Loki speechless and standing shocked.
I headed back to Heimdall "Lady Lunere, do you wish to head back to Trihlorre?" he asked, readying his spear.
"yes please Heimdall, I owe you, conflict between our two realms was never my intent, I thank you graciously" I smiled thankfully.
"it is no problem, you don't owe me anything" he smiled, before he sent me back to where I dreaded most.
When I returned home, I headed straight back to my chambers to take a long, deep sleep.
Eddic [Mythology of All Races] Loki
Tumblr media
A/N: Happier things. All content is from Mythology of All Races Vol. 2. These are simply my notes of what I want to remember from this chapter.. Obviously things within this can be debated.
Names
Evil companion and bench mate of Odin by Snorri. Mit-othin (?) Father of Fenris-wolf Utgard-Loki (?) The bound god The Cunning Loki The Sky god Lodur (Voluspa) The Firebringer
Birth
Son of giants Farbauti ‘dangerous striker’ and mother Laufey ‘leafy isle’/Nal. Mother was thin: Nal means needle. Brothers are Byleist and Helbindi. Combination of parents name— friction to start fire?
Maybe fire god or demon.
Stole Brisinga-men ‘fire.’ Relation of Norse custom to Loki: “A Norse saying when the fire crackles is ‘Loki is beating his children’ and the skin of milk is thrown into the fire as a dole.” Little children toss baby teeth in fire “Lokke Lokke bring me a bone tooth: Here is a Gold tooth.”
Appearance and Disposition
Beautiful and comely but evil disposition and fickle. Tends to get the gods into trouble and save them later. Foulmouthed and slanderous— Lokasenna. Has shoes to run through air and over water.
Dwarf association
Conduct is elfish to the dwarves. Associated with making Menglod’s hall and forged Lævateinn sword in underworld.
Transforms a lot!
A mare A seal A fly A flea A milkmaid A woman A giantess A salmon Bird by Freyja’s feather dress.
Witty
Excelled in sleight and strategy. Evaded the gods paying the giant rebuilding Asgard. Brings goddess Idunn power by way of another giant Thjazi.
Silly and Mischevious
Causes Thjazi’s daughter Skadi to laugh and reconcile after the Æsir slated her father, who pursued Loki to Jötunheim to bring back Idunn as a nut. Cuts Sif’s hair out of mischief but promises Thor (who would have broken his bones) to get Black Elves to make Sif’s hair gold to grow like any other hair.
Thief
Thief of Brisinga-men and Idunn and her apples. Dislikes it when others are praised such as Fimafeng, who he slew, at Ægir’s banquet.
Chaos
Caused fight with Geirrod and daughters. Was starved in and tortured there at one point. Ransoms his life promising to bring Thor without hammer or girdle of strength. Gerriod was overtaken by Thor.
Children and Lovers
Sigyn
Nari or Narfi.
Birthed Sleipnir.
Told the giant artificer who rebuilt Asgard to demand Freyja, the moon and the sun. The gods demanded he avoid the command or be killed. Loki shifted into a mare and was chased by the giant’s stallion Svadifari, suspending the work on Asgard until it was done outside of the prearranged amount of time. Thor slays the giant and Loki gives birth.
Angrboda Jormundandr, Fenrir and Hel nourished in Jötunheim. Odin sent gods to bring them to him. Casts Jormungandr into the sea and lies about the land. Hel thrown into Niflheim. Fenrir was bound.
Woman of Embers Ate a cooked heart of a woman he found in embers. Milked cows for months.   Became pregnant and gave birth to a monster. This regards him as subterranean fire (female).   Cows he milks are warm springs
Thor
Visited Utgard-Loki and the giant Thyrm. Thrymskvitha- aids Thor in recovering the hammer from Thyrm.
Odin
Friend of Odin. Servingman of Odin. Staunch friend of Hœnir by Thjodolf of Hvin. Chosen as Odin’s wish-son.
Given heavy tasks by Odin and was spoken well of. Knew almost everything that happened and relayed it to Odin.
Joined with Odin and Hœnir; creating first pair (related to Andvari’s treasure) and the story of Idunn. Odin and Loki mixed their blood in blood-brotherhood. Odin promises to spill no blood unless it was for both.
Balder
Punishment of Loki His in mountains with a house with four doors so that he could see in all ways. Hid as a salmon during day in Franang’s waterfall. At night he made a net and abandons it when the Æsir were near. Odin saw where he was hiding from Hlidskjalf. Hid as a salmon once more but Ksavir realized it was a fishing net. Thor catches him. Bound in the bowels of his son Vali which turned to iron. His son Narfi was turned into a wolf. Skadi fastened a Snake over his face so that poison would drop on his face. Sigyn (a Asynjur) held a tiny shell under the poison to collect it but some would fall on his face when she pulled it away. Earthquakes caused by his struggling.
Ragnarok
There he waits for Ragnarok where he breaks free and stands at the helm of a ship with those in Hel. Loki, Hrym and frost giants fight with heroes of Hel against Heimdall and they slay one another.
Insults
A man bearing children as a woman and a man taking a woman’s form we’re not uncommon but considered the most deadly insults
Hreidmarr
Odin Hœnir and Loki brought into power after he slays his son in the form of an Otter. (Hreidmarr’s). Odin sends Loki to Svartalfheim to capture the dwarf Andvari (as a fish) and make him give up his treasure. Loki takes all of the things, ring included that the dwarf wanted to keep as a sole item. Given to Odin who covers it with a fur without the ring. The nose of the ring was uncovered and Hreidmarr insisted on it being covered. Odin gives up ring. Ring and treasure becomes a curse.
Fimafeng
Ægir invited elves and gods to a feast. Fimafeng was praised and Loki slew him. Gods shook their shields, howled and ran him out of the forest. Returns to the hall to ask Eldir what is going on. Weapons, war and no nice word for him. Loki goes in to mix venom with their ale and bring hatred. Asks for a drink after a long journey but gods are silently claiming there is no place for Loki there. Loki appeals to Odin in their brotherhood pact. Odin asks Vidar to find a place for him. Shit happens: Bragi is accused of being a coward. Idunn begs him to weigh Loki’s kinship with Odin but is turned on by Loki. Loki accuses her of having love with her brother’s killer. Idunn tried to calm Bragi. Gefjun calls Loki a slanderer and that he hates everyone. Loki accuses her this time of sexual misconduct with a boy who gave her a necklace. Odin tells him that he’s crazy to piss her off as she knows the destinies of man— and Loki turns on Odin accusing him of giving victory to those who don’t deserve it. Odin pops off that Loki has been milking cows as a woman and giving birth to children. Loki says that Odin made magic spells in the shape of a witch while in Samsey. Accuses Frigg of misconduct with Odin’s brothers Vili and Ve. Frigg says that Balder would kill him if he were alive. Loki boasts that he killed him. Freyja is accused of sharing favour with all the gods and being her brother’s loved. Njord taunts him by calling him a womanly god and asks why he is here. Loki taunts Njord with being only a hostage from the Vanir and having had a son (Frey) with his sister. Tyr claims Frey is the best of heroes. Loki tells him to shut up as he has lost his wolf by the Fenris-Wolf and Loki knocked up his wife AND didn’t have to pay a crime. Frey tells him that the wolf is bound until Ragnarok and he can be too. Loki says Frey bought Gerd with gold and sword, and now must await Muspell’s sons when they ride through Myrkwood. Byggvir (Frey’s servant) intervenes and says if he were like Frey, he would crush him to bone marrow. Loki calls him a coward. Heimdall: you drunk Loki go home. Skadi claims that they will bind Loki with his sons bowels Loki tells her he was among those who killed her father and reminds her of their love. Sid hasn’t done anything wrong! She pours his ale but is reminded of their history. Beyla claims Thor is coming by the shaking of the mountains. Thor was slaying trolls. Enter Thor. Thor threatens to close Loki’s mouth with his hammer. Loki claims he doesn’t need to threaten. He’ll be less fierce when he fights the Fenris-wolf. Three more times he is threatened and Loki taunts him with hiding in a giants glove and having trouble in opening Skrymir’s wallet. Finally he goes but warns Ægir to have no more parties because fire will consume here.
Warrior, i (Thor x Reader)
Summary: After 200 years, you’re given a piece of home. It’s just not the piece you would’ve expected, or even a piece you realize is a gift.
A/N: Okay so this first part was written in like two hours maybe? It was a last minute tack-on that I thought would be interesting...until I realized it didn’t fit with my timeline at all, which is why this part ends the way it does (that’ll, hopefully, make more sense when you get there)!
Anyway...new Thor fic, because I’m unstoppable? Most of this takes place between Thor Ragnarok and the upcoming Infinity War, so I’m taking a ton of liberties with MCU continuity. I’m pretty sure nothing I write will even come close to what actually happens, so I’m sure we’ll all be laughing at just how wrong I was and how much none of this makes sense in a few months, but for now, this is what I’ve got.
I love my Lightning Husband, and I love writing angsty multi-chapter fics about him. Let me know what you think, too! <3
You shouldn’t have gone to Jotunheim. Fandral had said as much, but Thor had convinced them with promises of glory and adventure, by bringing up the past and reminding each member of the Warriors Three who had aided in their rise to the top ranks of Asgardian military.
He’d practically skipped over you, though you understood why. You’d kept quiet, watched everyone, your heartbeat racing faster than ever before. You knew you shouldn’t go with them. You knew none of them should’ve gone. Thor was in no mood to make a rational decision, but no one had stopped him.
You watched Loki closely before leaving the dining hall. Loki had been the only other person in the room with Thor when the rest of you had come in - the plan must have been planted in Thor’s brain to begin with, but there was no doubt in your mind that Loki had encouraged it somehow. Still, Thor trusted his brother - his quiet, observant, and otherwise untrustworthy brother, if he’d asked you.
But he hadn’t. In fact, you were sure Thor didn’t even notice you were there - you’d followed in after Sif and Hogun and kept to yourself at the back of the room, by the upturned feast table. He covers his pain with stupid, irresponsible plans you thought. Less than an hour before, Thor had nearly been crowned King of Asgard, but then…
“Frost Giants,” Odin had whispered. You’d been close enough to hear it, standing at attention in the center of the throne room, ceremonial spear raised high even after Thor had marched past.
And that was why he was so intent on marching to Jotunheim. The Frost Giants had intruded on what was meant to be one of the most important days of Thor’s life - and even worse, they’d slipped past the guards into the weapons vault and attempted to steal their Casket. You were sure Odin did not approve of this trip, and for once, you were on his side.
But still, you’d said nothing, not even as you’d mounted a horse and headed off behind the rest of them across the bridge to Heimdall. Something about that interaction unsettled you as well. Heimdall had never let an enemy slip past him before, and it had shaken him. But Thor, still fired up, told Heimdall not to tell anyone where you were headed and pushed past him.
Just before he opened the Bifrost, Heimdall said, “Be warned. I will honor my sworn oath to protect this real as its Gatekeeper. If your return threatens the safety of Asgard, the Bifrost will remain closed to you. You’ll be left to die in the cold wastes of Jotunheim.” He quipped with Thor and Volstagg before finally opening the portal and transporting the group.
The moment the Bifrost spit you all out onto the frozen wasteland of Jotunheim, Hogun spoke up. “We shouldn’t be here,” he said quietly.
You almost nodded, but refrained, shaking immediately from the cold instead. You could feel it through layers of armor and leather. You shut your eyes for a moment to gather your composure, and when you had controlled your shivering, you let out a long breath.
Before long, the group followed Thor through what looked like fallen structures of ice and stone. There was no sign of life anywhere; everything was dark, cold, and unmoving, except for the occasional cluster of ice that fell. That was the only noise as well, save the heavy footsteps of the soldiers around you. Snow flurries blew in every direction, catching in your hair and whipping across your nose and cheeks. You stomped through more shivers and ground your teeth to keep from chattering, noticing that the ground was cracked and uneven.
You came into a clearing. Across the space was a huge stone castle, or at least that’s what you thought it was. It was hard to tell, as dark as it was.
“Where are they?” Sif asked, her hood billowing, though not falling from her head.
“Hiding,” Thor answered, tightening his grip on Mjølnir. “As cowards always do.”
As you neared the stone castle, an ominous voice rang out, strengthening your shivers. “You’ve come a long way to die, Asgardians.”
Thor gave the voice no chance to continue before calling back, “I am Thor Odinson.”
The voice said, “We know who you are.”
Thor planted his feet as best he could before saying, “How did your people get into Asgard?”
You wanted to turn back, to call Heimdall and go home. The cold was no friend of yours, you knew, and seeing Thor in such a mood was not pleasant. But you knew what your friends would say if you left them; they would call you a coward, a deserter. That was not what you wanted any of them to think, but especially not Thor, even if he was treading thin ice, perhaps literally as well as metaphorically.
There was a brief silence, which allowed your fears and discomfort to take hold of your heart, but you still did nothing. And then the voice called back, “The house of Odin...is full of traitors.”
Thor brought Mjølnir up until in threat, stepping closer to the castle with grated teeth. “Do not dishonor my father’s name with your lies!” he yelled.
You shook your head at his foolishness, but no one saw. You were glad, at least, to be behind your friends, both to be the furthest from the Jotuns and so no one could see your face as you shook.
A large, impending shadow rose from the castle. It was then that you realized it wasn’t a castle at all, but a throne. The being’s head pointed in four or five little places, as if it wore a crown with sharp points. It bellowed, “Your father is a liar and a thief! And why have you come here? To make peace?!” It stared down at Thor, and as your eyes adjusted, you realized it had red eyes. “You long for battle. You crave it,” it said. “You’re nothing but a boy trying to prove himself a man.”
You looked up to see smaller bodies, though many, approaching your group. All were a dark shade of blue, all with piercing red eyes that bore into your flesh like the harsh winds that blew.
“This boy has grown tired of your mockery,” Thor said.
The bodies around you extended at the arms - large, sharp icicles grew from every one of them. You watched as Loki approached his brother, but could not hear what he said from your place. You dared not move, for fear of triggering an attack.
“You know not what your actions would unleash. I do,” the large body in front of the throne called. You only realized then that this must be Laufey, King of the Jotuns. The thought would’ve chilled your bones if they were not already so frozen.
“Go now, while I still allow it,” Laufey said.
A single man came forward, standing before Loki and Thor in an intimidating stance. He stared, as unmoving as the fixtures around you.
Loki bowed his head and said, “We will accept your most gracious offer,” which you knew would not go over well with his brother.
Thor hesitated, even as Loki turned and called, “Come on, brother.” The lone man stared at Thor, who kept his place, and your eyes widened. You wished to be home, in front of a nice warm fire with a cup of mead to heat your insides. You wished Thor would listen, and even for a moment believed he might listen to you. But you dared not fool yourself, nor make too much of a clamorous walk to him. You stayed put and sighed once more.
Just as Thor turned to follow Loki, the lone man said in a deep voice, “Run back home, little princess.”
Your stomach dropped. Loki turned ghostly white, shut his eyes and muttered, “Damn.”
Thor smiled, perhaps at you, then pulled forth Mjølnir’s power and turned on his heel to face the man. He swung the hammer hard, and the man flew back until he hit the base of the throne. “Next,” Thor called, and soon, a battle ensued.
You shook your head hard before pulling your spear from its sheath on your back. Frost Giants came from all directions, and you saw your friends pull their weapons out to defend themselves. You went up against the army, throwing your spear at anyone that dared come near. Some you were able to simply lift and push away without seriously maiming them, but some came too close too fast, requiring a more violent defense.
In the middle of the chaos, you heard Thor yell, “At least make it a challenge for me!”
You would’ve rolled your eyes in any other situation, but this was not one that warranted such nonchalance. You continued to fight, kicking out as the Frost Giants came faster and harder. Your friends fought valiantly, or so you thought, until Fandral cried against the screams and yells. Sif called for Thor, and after you cut another Giant, you turned on your heel and ran, watching as Hogun and Sif pulled Fandral off a cluster of sharp icicles that had pierced his chest.
Loki called, “Thor, we must go!” and Thor shouted back, “Then go!” as he continued to fight.
You had a choice to make: stay and fight with Thor, who was knocking Giants back three and four at a time with Mjølnir, or help Volstagg carry Fandral back to a safe spot, to call for Heimdall and go home.
Even though you wanted to make sure Thor would get home in one piece, and even though your heart said you should stay at his side, for he would be grateful for it later, your mind got the best of you. Your friends - the group - needed you. And with a standard spear and not much else, you wouldn’t be of much use to Thor anyway.
You heard ice cracking - loudly, over the din of battle - as you went, but you dared not look behind you until an excruciatingly terrorizing roar went out. Laufey had called forth a beast made of meat and teeth, a large blue thing that was nearly as tall as the throne behind it. You ran ahead of Volstagg, scouring the safe places to step, quickly moving as your head pounded and your blood boiled. Good you thought at least I’ll be warm in no time.
The beast was hot on your trails, too close for too long. You could barely breathe, but a single thought kept you going: Get home. Heimdall’s words rang in your ears, that he would not open the Bifrost if it endangered Asgard. Your body was at war with itself - half terrified of dying in this wasteland, half running purely on survival instincts. You could hear the beast just behind you, growling and snarling and sending chills all over you.
Then, a crack. You looked over your shoulder long enough to watch the ground give out beneath the beast, but then resumed your running. Someone called for Heimdall, but no sign of the Bifrost came. He’d been true to his word, and it would be the death of you. All of you.
You stopped short near the edge of a cliff. You noticed then that you’d started crying, most likely just as a reaction to the extreme cold, for your eyes did not feel much except frozen. You breathed hard, then harder as a clawed hand larger than most buildings came up from beyond the cliff, its nails digging into the ground. The beast pulled itself up, roared, and came nearer to you - and then a flash of red flew overhead, and a hole was blasted into the back of the beast. You backed away, holding your arms out as if anyone might fall over them, and watched as Thor came down and kneeled before the beast.
He stood slowly as it fell over the cliff, into a deep cavern that you could not see the bottom of. Thor turned to the group, a huge, victorious smile on his face. Under other circumstances, you’d think he was the most handsome person to have ever lived. But since all of this mess was his fault, not the Jotuns, you glared at him.
His face fell, and you heard the distinct nose of feet jostling snow and ice. The group turned to see an army of Giants glaring back, just before they advanced. You took a defensive stance, spear at the ready, before flickers of light danced along the ground. Everyone froze, even the Frost Giants. The Bifrost finally came, but it did not lift you into its power. Instead, it brought down Odin astride a great black horse.
“Father!” Thor cried. “We’ll finish them together!”
“Silence!” Odin said, his voice echoing against the barren land.
Laufey lifted above his subjects on a large piece of stone until he was face-to-face with Odin. He seemed to snicker before saying, “Allfather… You look weary.”
Odin hesitated for only a second, but it was a noticeable second. “Laufey,” he said. “End this now.”
Laufey lowered his face, though not his gaze. “Your boy sought this out.”
“You’re right,” Odin replied. “These are the actions of a boy. Treat them as such.”
You saw Thor’s jaw tighten. Loki stood so close to his brother, they nearly looked like one person in the cold darkness.
“You and I can end this,” Odin said. “Here and now, before there’s further bloodshed.”
“We are beyond diplomacy now, Allfather,” Laufey said. “He’ll get what he came for - war and death.”
You had never been so terrified, nor so angry with Thor. You should’ve said something, spoken up instead of standing in cowardly silence. But what was your word against the consensus of the group? This, at least on Thor’s part, seemed inevitable, given his disposition.
“So be it,” Odin said.
Laufey lifted a dagger made of ice, but Odin was quicker, lifting his scepter to the sky. Waves of light and sound radiated from it, sending Laufey up and over the crowd. In the same bout of power, the Bifrost opened, and your group was pulled up into the sky.
But you had not been there. Not really.
They say that “it all happened in a dream” is not a good way to tell a story on Midgard. They are right - whoever they may be. And though it was but your dream, it was not just a dream. You dreamt it, yes, but your friends...Fandral… They lived it. You had not spoken because you had not really been there. You had not called out to anyone because they wouldn’t have heard you, at least not in a way that could’ve changed anything.
See, your dream was a vision. When you woke from it, you were frozen in bed, both in the sense that it was difficult for you to move and that you were shaking from the cold, despite the fact that it was about 75 degrees fahrenheit outside.
You would not know any of this until much later. You would not understand the vision or know that that had been the night that Thor had been banished to Midgard, just as you had for some time. You would never know that Heimdall had sent you the vision somehow, tapping into magic he did not ordinarily possess as far as you knew. He would keep that much a secret, though you would hear the whole story eventually.
But that night, when you were finally able to push yourself up in bed, you sat with your legs pulled up to your chest. You pulled your blanket around your shoulders before putting your head against your knees. You told yourself to breathe, to think of the sun and coffee and the harp you were building in the next room. You thought of the new movie you’d seen, just to have something else to focus on. Ultimately, you stood from the bed with your blanket still around you and went off into your living room. You turned your television on, sat on the leather couch you’d picked up at a garage sale, and resumed the movie you’d started on Netflix before retiring to the bedroom.
You would never receive another prophetic vision from Heimdall again.
Blind Cut
TITLE: Blind Cut CHAPTER NO./ONE SHOT: Chapter 1 AUTHOR: malignedangel ORIGINAL IMAGINE: Imagine Loki sneaking out of the palace as a youth to see the city and countryside, while out one day, he accidentally gets in trouble for something, but a young girl deals with the situation, allowing him to be left alone and his true identity be kept secret. She is a poor girl who is only in the city to sell goods with her father, so she does not realise it is Loki, even though she sees his face. They form a friendship as she shows him around the city, and tells him the date she comes to the city every month for a particular market. RATING: T for this chapter NOTES/WARNINGS: AU, Loki travels to Midgard to show his brother and his friends that he is just as brave as any of them. The term “Blind Cut” is a term used in illusion magic which I thought appropriate for the direction of the story.
Story Notes: I have used this imagine as a springboard, but there will many, many departures from it. There will be some obvious differences that will develop as the story unfolds.
Chapter Notes: Nothing too outlandish yet. It’s off to a little bit of a slow start, but I promise it has direction :D
Chapter I
Couldn’t handle himself. Not strong enough. Too scared to join in an adventure.
Loki was fuming after his latest training session with his brother and the other warriors. Even in their teen years, Thor was as big as an ox and just as belligerent, and his stooges were more than happy to follow Thor’s example. Normally, Loki paid their taunts no mind, but today the words had struck a chord within Loki. Loki might not have been as big or as strong as his brother and his friends, but he was by no means defenseless. Just because Loki could not swing an axe or a sword with the same prowess as his brother did not make him any less of a capable fighter.
He stormed back to his rooms, using his seidr to slam the door behind him. He ran his hands back through his hair, tugging at it as he tried to push down the frustration welling in his system. After several moments of trying to force himself back into his usual calm, he found himself unable to hold down a growl of frustration. He kicked out at a chair, sending the piece of furniture careening into his large bookshelf.
The shelf trembled for a moment, unseating a few books which were more precariously perched. This only served to agitate Loki further. Both his fastidious nature and his deep love of academia added their scolding to the voices that were plaguing his thoughts. Stalking over to the fallen books, he started to gather them up into a pile. He slammed closed the covers of the books that had fallen with their spines facing up, relishing in the loud crack they created. It something that he could focus on other than the words echoing through his head, at least.
He reached for a book that had fallen with the pages up before he paused. The book in question had fallen open to a page with a map of Midgard. He let his fingers trace over the page. He hadn’t remembered this book. His tutor in history had given him this book when Loki had shown interest in the history of the nine realms beyond Asgard. Putting the rest of the fallen books down next to the shelf, he slowly picked it up, letting his fingers trace over the letters on the page. As if whispered by an unseen conspirator, an idea began to form in his mind. There were ways off Asgard besides going through the gatekeeper. Loki had been studying them, and why shouldn’t he use them? Why should they exist if not for the use of the intrepid adventurers?
Too afraid to go on an adventure, hmm? Loki thought to himself. I will show those witless oafs who is too afraid for an adventure. He closed the book and magicked a bag to put it into. After all, having the information couldn’t hurt and he needed the bag anyway. He was going to bring back something to prove to Thor and his friends once and for all that he was just as brave and adventurous as them, if not more.
After grabbing a few more things, he reached for his fine cloak, but paused. It might not be wise for him to be so obvious. He did not know how the Midgardians might react to him if he showed up in all his finery and the last thing he needed was to expose himself as a god to foil a robbery attempt. As a matter of fact, he wasn’t sure how they would react when he showed up at all. Still, he was no coward. He was going to do this one way or the other, if only because he had something to prove.
Gathering up the last of his supplies, Loki slipped out of his rooms, using the secret passages and servants’ halls to leave the palace unperturbed. He pulled a length of course cloth from the laundress’s clean stack and used it to make himself less obvious. He slipped through to the streets of Asgard, joining the hustle and bustle of the people as they moved about. He pulled his makeshift disguise tighter around him as he passed through the crowds, ducking down side alleys until he found his way down to the waterfront. The easiest of the passages to the other nine realms was located in an underwater cave.
Loki paused for a moment at the waterfront, looking over his shoulder to make sure that he had not been followed. He could only hope that Heimdall would keep his peace and allow Loki this chance to prove himself. The gatekeeper sometimes meddled where he was not welcome. He shook his head and waved a hand over his bag, using his seidr to protect its contents from water damage. He slowly waded into the water, the chill of it almost pleasant. He took a deep breath as he got into the water up to his chest and then dove into the water.
Loki was a strong enough swimmer, and though he knew there were plenty of nasty things when one went deep enough into the lake, he was unconcerned with meeting up with them. He supposed he could use his seidr to fend off any nasty creatures if he really needed to. The further he dived, the more his chest began to ache with the need to breathe. Surely it couldn’t be that much deeper to the portal? The more his chest screamed for oxygen, the harder he fought to reach the cave. After a few moments, as he felt himself growing weaker, a light appeared somewhere below him. He reached out to it, feeling lightheaded. He closed his eyes as the flash of light grew brighter and that was the last he remembered.
* * * * *
Loki sat up with a gasp, sucking air into his lungs. He placed a hand over his chest, as if to check he was still real. Feeling his own pulse beneath his fingers, he relaxed slightly. This wasn’t Hel then. He took a moment to gain his surroundings. This place didn’t look like any that he had been to before. He looked around at the rocky land and let a small smile begin to form at the edges of his lips. He’d done it. Granted, he might find a better way to do it should he ever have to do it again, but he had done it nonetheless. He flopped back on the ground as the smile became a full grin. Even Thor and his friends would not dare such a thing. How Loki relished the idea of rubbing this idea in their arrogant faces.
After a few more minutes laying there to catch his breath, Loki pulled out the book on Midgard from his bag. He flipped open the pages and thumbed through them until he found a section on Midgardian people. He thanked his lucky stars that whomever had written the book had obviously been to Midgard to study the people and culture. He skimmed the information, looking for the best way to blend in with the Midgardians. He studied the drawings of clothing, weaponry, adornments, and utility items until he was satisfied that he would be able to mimic it. He summoned his seidr and placed a hand on his chest, allowing the illusion to wash over him. He felt exhaustion creeping up on him after casting his glamour and made a note to himself that after his next near-death experience, he ought to wait a little longer to use his magic.
Loki looked at the sky and it seemed that the sun was beginning to set. He wasn’t sure what kind of creatures stalked Midgard at night, and he knew he was in no condition to fight anything that posed any great threat at the moment. He needed rest and a chance to recover. He brushed the hair away from his face and moved to get up before frowning down at himself. In what he assumed was a cruel joke from the universe, his seidr had done its job, but not at all in the way that Loki intended. Staring down at himself he realized the glamour he had placed over him gave him the appearance of a woman, rather than the warrior he had imagined himself to appear as. Loki sighed, knowing he was in no state to correct the illusion, not yet anyway. Once he’d had some sleep to replenish his mind and his seidr, her would be able to correct this error. He began to push himself to his feet, hoping to find some sort of lodging.
As he started slowly down the road, he heard the sound of voices somewhere beyond his line of vision. He frowned and touched his bag at his side, making sure that he knew where his daggers were in case he should need them. As he came around a bend he saw the owners of the two voices. There were two young men speaking with one another as they made their way out of the town. Both were tall and muscular and they vaguely reminded Loki of Hogunn. If they grew much bigger, they could be mistaken for Asgardians. Loki made a face, but raised his head high. Perhaps if he ignored them, they might ignore his presence. Given his current appearance, however, he considered it quite unlikely.
As Loki moved past the young men, their conversations began to cease. They turned their attention to Loki as he tried to pass by them unperturbed.
“Well, hello there, beautiful,” one of them said. Loki’s lips thinned into a line. He was not in the mood for this. He continued walking, but found his annoyance mounting as the two young men changed their path to fall into step next to him.
“What? You don’t like to get compliments?” the other said, putting an arm over Loki’s shoulders. The muscles in his shoulders tensed. “We just want to talk.”
“Remove your hand,” Loki growled, “or I shall remove it for you.” The first laughed.
“Better watch out, Hrein,” he said. “Looks like this kitten has claws.” The second, who Loki now knew was called Hrein, simply gathered Loki closer to him.
“Don’t be like that, sweetheart,” Hrein said. Loki’s hand moved to his bag. He didn’t want to have to fight his way out of this but he was in no mood for this. “You looked a little lost and we just wanted to help a poor soul in need.”
“And to where might you be helping me, hm?” Loki asked. “Straight into your bed?” Hrein smiled at Loki with an almost predatory grin.
“Well, I can’t say as I’d mind it,” he said. Loki’s gaze hardened.
“Remove your arm from my shoulders,” Loki said. “I will not ask again before I remove it.” Hrein smirked down at him.
“You don’t have the guts,” he said. Loki reached into his bag when the sound of wheels on the rocky road caught the attention of the three of them. Hrein removed his arm as he looked to see where the sound was coming from. Loki took the opportunity to back away as a cart drew closer. It came to a halt as it drew even with them.
“Hrein, Torfi, are you causing trouble again?” asked the driver of the cart, only slightly older than the others by the look of him.
“Mind your own,” Hrein said. “Shouldn’t you be playing house, Cuy?” The young man looked to Loki and offered a small smile, ignoring the two other men. If the others reminded him of Hogunn, this one reminded him of Thor. Tall and built for strength, he looked as though he could handle himself in a fight. However, this young man had dark hair rather than his brother’s light hair. He looked just as cocky as Thor as well.
“There you are,” he said. “I thought you said you were going to meet me at the market.” Loki’s brow furrowed. “Edda said you hadn’t yet come by the house when she was in the market earlier.”
“You know her?” Hrein asked. The young man ignored him once more.
“You best hop on. Edda’ll have something cooking and she’ll skin us both if we’re late,” he said, shifting over on the bench to allow Loki a place to sit. Loki looked at Hrein and Torfi for a moment and decided he might better take his chances with this young man on the cart. At least it would be one less body to account for if it came to a fight. Loki moved around Hrein and over to the cart. The young man offered a hand up and pulled Loki onto the bench. He gave Hrein and Torfi quick mock salute before he started his cart down the road. Hrein and Torfi looked after them until the cart disappeared around the bend. Loki waited for a long while before he turned to the young man next to him.
“I am afraid that you have mistaken me for someone else,” he said. The young man chuckled but kept his eyes on the road in front of him.
“Oh no,” he said. “I’ve never seen you before in my life. But I wouldn’t leave you to the mercy of those two idiots.” Loki cocked his head as the young man looked at him. “I’m Cuyler by the way. Friends call me Cuy for short.”
“And those two half-wits are your friends?” Loki asked, remembering one had called him as such. Cuyler laughed.
“They’re a source of coin,” he said. Loki frowned. This man didn’t seem old enough to be worrying about coin yet. He was in his teens, surely, but still too young to have learned a trade yet. He opened his mouth to question him, but Cuyler spoke first. “So what’s your name? And what jarl’s house did you creep out of?”
“I beg your pardon?” Loki asked.
“I assume you’re from one of the jarl’s houses. You don’t talk like us. Most people who don’t sound like us are foreign, and that means that you’re most likely either married to a jarl or working in a jarl’s household,” he said. Loki looked at Cuyler a moment. For all he reminded him of Thor, he had to say the young man was quite intelligent, even if he had gotten everything completely wrong.
“Well you are right that I am foreign,” he said. “And I don’t wish to discuss where I came from.” Cuyler frowned.
“And your name?” Cuyler prompted once more, and Loki was glad that Cuyler had respected his closure of the subject. Loki thought for a moment before he offered a name he had heard around court.
“Lofn,” he said. Cuyler nodded.
“Well, Lofn. I won’t prevent you from going on your way. But you look like you could use a good meal and a little bit of rest. I wasn’t lying when I said there will be food when I get home,” he said. Loki thought for a moment.
“I would actually be quite grateful for the food and the rest,” he said. “I travelled quite far.”
“I gathered that,” Cuyler said with a smile. He indicated the empty back of the cart. “You’re welcome to stretch out in the cart if you’d like.” Loki shook his head.
“If it’s all the same to you,” he said, “I’d like to stay and talk awhile. Get to know you.”
“If that’s what you’d like, Lofn,” he said. “We’ve got awhile yet before we get home. Ask me anything you like.”
Loki began a slow barrage of questions. He learned that Cuyler was a blacksmith and had just come from the market after delivering goods to some of the people in town. He learned about the market and the weather and the terrain. Anything that Loki could learn he wanted to absorb. It would make any possible future visits to Midgard that much easier, and Cuyler was willing enough to answer his questions. Loki barely marked the passing of the hours until he realized the light was beginning to wane. The cart crested a final hill before a house surrounded by quite a bit of farmland came into view. Cuyler looked over to Loki and offered him another smile.
“Home sweet home.”
Thor Ragnarok Thoughts & Opinions
Heavy spoilers under the cut! You’ve been warned.
The bad
I liked the movie overall, so I thought I’d start out with the few things that bugged me...
- Hela being Thor and Loki’s sister. Now, I don’t really mind this idea in and off itself, and I get why they didn’t want to make her Loki’s daughter like she is in mythology, but making her their long-lost sister did raise a few questions for me: First of all, does that mean we’re never going to see Angela in the MCU? Because honestly, I’d sell my soul for a movie about Angela and Sera. I mean, come on, Thor and Loki’s older sister they never knew, who’s a badass lesbian and literally goes to Hel to save her equally badass trans girlfriend... If Hela was supposed to replace that storyline, I’d be dissapointed. The second thing that bugged me about Hela being Odin’s daughter is that she doesn’t look like him at all? Her whole aesthetic with the black hair, green clothing and horns was very Loki-esque and I didn’t quite see the point of that if she’s not supposed to be (biologically) related to Loki? Did Loki just happen to randomly have very similar looks and a very similar fashion sense as the long-lost adopted sister he never knew? Also, I always had the headcanon that Loki’s looks (black hair while the rest of the family is blonde etc.) contributed to him being an outsider in Asgard, so I’m not quite sure how I feel about one of Odin’s biological kids literally looking the same. Also, this made me wonder if we’re ever going to see Lady Loki in the MCU. Because that’s another thing I really wanna see.
- The scene where Thor electroshocks Loki and then leaves him behind while he’s in pain. Enough said.
- That BruceNat bullshit again. This was why I didn’t want Bruce in this movie. I get that the writers couldn’t just ignore stuff that happened in Age of Ultron, but god, why did they have to remind me of that abomination of a movie?
- Am I seriously supposed to believe that Doctor Strange, a mortal, is more powerful that Loki, an actual god? Nope. I don’t buy it.
- Where was Sif? (Also, holy shit, did they really kill off the Warriors Three just like that?)
- So how did Loki survive in TDW?
The good
Now, on to the stuff I liked!
- Loki writing theatre plays about himself and having them performed in front of all of Asgard. This was something I didn’t know I needed until I saw it. Honestly, that was easily my favourite scene in the movie, hands down. It was definitely a funny scene, but it was so full of little things that made it meaningful. First of all, I’d like to note the fact that the play was only a little bit more dramatic than what actually happend. Loki didn’t even change that much about how he ‘died’. Also, I love that Loki finally gets to tell his own version of his story to the people of Asgard. Not Odin’s or Thor’s version, but his own. And people are finally listening to him and appreciating him. I get that the scene was meant to be funny, but I mean this in a completely serious way. Also, can we talk about Loki including his Jotun heritage in the play and therfore making it public to all of Asgard? And how the Asgardians are just fine with it? They don’t think it makes him a monster or anything less than their prince? And that must be so healing for Loki to see as well? He’s staring to accept himself and that’s so beautiful???
- Also, I found it really touching how despite everything Odin’s done to him, Loki clearly still loves him. First of all, he didn’t kill him at the end of TDW, and only banished him to a retirement home on Midgard instead? I’d say that’s surprisingly merciful. And then, even in his play he doesn’t make Odin the bad guy, and instead shows him as this loving father who’s “heart melted” when he met Loki? (Granted, that might have something to do with the fact that he’s currently impersonating Odin, so portraying him as a villain or tyrant might have backfired, but still.)
- Odin’s death scene actually made me so emotional?? I really didn’t expect that. Odin’s my most hated character in these movies and I thought I’d just be happy when he died, but they managed to make his death so sad and sweet?? He told Thor and Loki he loved them?? And Loki made that face and you could tell how much it meant for him to hear that, despite everything Odin’s done to him?? And then he praises Loki’s magic and says “Frigga would have been proud”?? And Loki looks like he’s about to cry?? And... that scene was just so full of feels I’m????
- The grandmaster hitting on Loki. That clip we know from the promos where the grandmaster is obviously giving Loki bedroom eyes is one thing. But then also later Loki says something like “I won the grandmaster’s favour” (not sure what exactly he says in English since I had to watch the German dub). And then there’s that scene where Loki wants to leave when he sees the Hulk and the grandmaster suddenly stops him by getting into his personal space and saying “Where do you think you’re going?” with that seductive smirk... Yeah, they probably had sex at some point.
- Which brings me to the next point: I love how this was the first Thor movie that at least hinted at Loki’s queerness. It still wasn’t explicit, unfortunately, but at the very least it’s clear that Loki understood the grandmaster was hitting on him. (@MCU writers: Make him bi in canon, you cowards!)
- Everything about Valkyrie. Awesome badass character, super intersting & likable, awesomely played. Having more women of colour in mainstream movies is always great, and Tessa Thompson saying she wanted to be faithful to Valkyrie’s bisexuality from the comics gets a big thumbs up from me. (Again, sad that it wasn’t explicit, but I’ll take what I can get.) Also, that woman who died in front of her in the flashback? Was her girlfriend. I’ll fight you on his.
- Thor saying he wanted to be a Valkyrie as a kid before finding out they were all women. Precious <3
- Seeing Thor and Loki’s brotherly relationship and hearing more about their childhood. Also, Thor saying he’s always loved snakes.
- Loki calling Bruce by his first name, while even Thor calls him “Banner”. I’m not gonna lie, I used to really ship Loki and Bruce back when the first Avengers was released, so that was just a nice little detail I liked.
- Heimdall being a badass. (That moment where he greets Loki with “I saw you coming. Welcome home”??? MY HEART)
- The whole lovestory-plot and earth-plot from the previous Thor movies just not being a thing. HALLELUJAH. (Also: “Sorry Jane dumped you!” :D)
- The fact that there was no love story in this at all. Hell yes. Thor and Loki got to focus on their brotherly relationship instead and Valkyrie got to be a badass female character without needing to be shoehorned into some romantic subplot. Good shit.
- Loki actually coming to save the people of Asgard?!?!?! He could have just abandonend them, but he came back and helped make sure everyone was safe?? I honestly wouldn’t call him a villain anymore at this point.
- Loki’s proud smirk when Thor discovers his powers. He’s like “That’s my bro!”
- “If you were really here, I might even hug you.” “I’m here.”
- Loki standing by Thor’s side in the end? They’ve come so far <3
And there’s probably more  but that’s all I can think of rn
