I love silver as the son of shadamy (he reminds me of trunks) let's be honest, if silver was 20 years old and not 200, we would all know that he is the son of shadamy, silver is a sweetheart like amy, they make you want to take care of them

Yeah. It’s been straight-up stated by the developers that he’s modeled after Trunks.

To be honest, though, I’m glad we have the 200-year gap. I think it’d be harder to make the case for him being an immediate descendant of the two of them. Silver just doesn’t have any of Amy’s physical attributes. Shadow lines up, but Silver doesn’t have Amy’s pink fur, green eyes, etc. I did make a case for them potentially having the same “hairline” because of how their quills fall in this headcanon, but that alone is a stretch. Rouge has literally nothing in common with Silver imo, but people would probably push her as being Silver’s mother far more often if he were Shadow’s direct son just based on her fur color alone.

With a few generations of breathing room, though? It’s much easier to make an argument for Shadamy. Things like Silver’s fur and eye color are much easier to explain if genes from other sources were added along the way. It’s believable that Amy’s visible traits would disappear; she’s the only character I know of with pink fur, so I’m willing to bet it’s a recessive trait. It also makes more sense that he wouldn’t immediately know Shadow and Amy are his ancestors if they’re farther up the line. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned from focusing so much on two characters who barely interact, it’s that there’s actually more to work with when there’s an absence of information. A story like Shellshock is far more convincing when we know nothing about Silver and Amy’s parentage. There’s a ton of wiggle room to work with.

In terms of personality, I think you’re exactly right. It’s especially fun because despite their cute, sweet demeanors, they’re always the first to charge into battle. They can’t help it. He has her strong sense of justice AND steadfast idealism. It’s easy to imagine Shadow stepping in to protect Amy when she gets out of her depth, and it’s just as easy to picture Blaze doing the same for Silver.

The more I think about it, the more I see parallels between Shadamy and Silvaze. Of course Amy’s great-great-grandson would go for a serious, intense introvert with a soft spot. It runs in the family, lol.

Before anyone gets too excited, Shadow has only done this ONCE in canon as far as I know, and it was in Sonic Riders, no less. Silver was created early in Sonic 06’s development, which began in 2005. Riders came out after that point in early 2006, meaning they likely gave Shadow psychokinesis after it was already established as Silver’s signature move.

Lol, no. Definitely not. I’ll shamelessly cherry-pick all day in the name of shadamy, but even I can’t really justify doing anything with this. It’s too blatantly obvious yet specific to make a headcanon about it. I just like to imagine one Dadow-believer made this one singular animation just to be a troll. Just thought I’d share, lol.

It took a while for me to come up with all of these, but now that we have a little more information on the six protagonists in Xenoblade 3, I’ve decided to post a some headcanons for them!

Just like the headcanons I made on everyone’s position on the lee-ler-switch spectrum, these headcanons could change as more information comes out about these six characters. For now, however, this is what I have for everyone.

I’m putting these under a “Read More” just in case this post gets a bit too long.

I’m updating the headcanons I previously made for Mio and Eunie. My headcanon for Mio’s position on the lee-ler-switch spectrum is now a ler-leaning switch, and Eunie is now a pure ler. The headcanons I made for Noah, Lanz, Taion, and Sena remain the same for the time being.

I don’t have a specific placement for Taion and Lanz because I have no clue if Lanz would be ticklish in the first place. Judging by his appearance, he might not be ticklish at all due to his mechanical body (or at least, it looks like a mechanical body. Maybe he’s related to the Machina from XC1 somehow?).

If he is ticklish, however, I think he would be in fifth place, which would make Taion the least ticklish out of the six protagonists.

According to Lanz’s character bio, him and Noah are childhood friends. Given this information, I don’t think anyone would be surprised to know that these two get into tickle fights All. The. Time.

I use the term “tickle fight” VERY loosely, because 99% of the time (or 100% of the time if Lanz isn’t ticklish), it’s just Lanz tickling the shit out of Noah.

Eunie will occasionally join in on Noah and Lanz’s tickle fights, usually so she and Lanz can work together to tickle Noah into hysterics.

There are times where Lanz and Noah will team up to tickle Eunie, but this rarely ever happens, mainly because Eucine will somehow find a way to tickle Noah and convince Lanz to help her tickle him.

Regardless of whether or not Noah is related to Shulk, he does share a weak spot with him, that being his stomach.

Noah can not take tummy tickles AT ALL. He’s just too sensitive there!

Hell, you don’t even have to tickle his belly if you want to make him laugh! You could put your hand on his stomach and not even move it an inch, and he’d still fall into a giggle fit.

Of course, everyone in the main party loves to take advantage of this. They mainly use this weakness of his to lift his spirits after he comes back from his duties as an off-seer, but they can also use this to their advantage should they get into an argument with him (both Lanz and Eucine can confirm that this works. Both of them have used this strategy multiple times in the past).

Noah has two other weakness: raspberries and feathers. He absolutely can not handle either one of these, especially if they’re used on his belly.

Similarly to Noah and Lanz, Mio and Sena will often get into tickle fights. Unlike Noah and Lanz, however, there’s a 50-50 chance of either one of them winning, even though Sena is physically stronger than Mio.

Unless of course Taion shows up, which in that case, both of them will lose.

Mio and Sena share a tickle spot with each other, that being their Core Crystals.

Taion is a downright EVIL ler. He will learn all your worst spots, and he will find all of your weaknesses. He will then proceed to come with a way to make his lees a giggly mess by combining the above information together. He’s a tactician, what more did you expect?

Long story short, don’t fuck with Taion. He will wreck your shit.

And before every test, he doesn’t see you study at all. It’s like you barely even keep notes.

In fact, he’s almost certain you don’t even keep notes at all. He was willing to bet that the notebook that rested on your desk during note time was promptly filled with doodles and random drawings, maybe even a to-do list or something.

But, all that aside, Bakugou has the fattest crush on you. This man is fucking smitten till the day he dies.

Everything about you astounds him, he’s never seen anyone like you.

And it goes to say that when you come out second in class, under him, he’s fucking confused and amazed at the same time.

He wants to ask you a million questions on how you did, ask if you cheated off of him somehow but he knows that’s not even remotely true.

His idea of trying to ask you out is getting you to study with him.

“Oi.” Bakugou approaches you after class, walking back toward your dorm.

“Oh, hey Bakugou.” You smile at him. You had a crush on him too, but neither side knew the other’s feelings.

“We’re studying together tomorrow. Meet me in the library and don’t be late.” Bakugou storms off, totally chad-like he’s thinking he’s just scored you and everything.

You know he knows you don’t study.

You show up anyway and you can’t help but laugh because it’s certainly not studying that you two are doing in the library.

Somehow he’s managed to lead you to the library just to take you out on a date somewhere because there’s no book bag in sight, not even a book moved from the shelf.

“Alright let’s go.” Bakugou smirks.

“You could’ve just asked me out on a date in the first place.” You tease him.

“Shut up.” He huffs, smiling.

It’s a really good date.

Midoriya has probably asked you to help him study once or twice. He knows you’re up pretty high in class, you have great grades, but he’;s confused as fuck when you turn him down.

“What?” He blinks at you, confused.

“It’s not that I don’t want to! I’d love to but I uh don’t really study.” You mumble, avoiding his gaze.

“But you have amazing grades-”

“And I finish all my worksheets right before class starts, it’s just how I do things.” You look back up at him and smile.

“I can try my hardest to help, but studying isn’t really my strong suit, I think I get lower grades when I study.”

from that point on, I think Midoriya probably finds you that much more fascinating.

He loves to learn more about you, and knowing that you can finish a big project the morning it’s due and make a top grade, he’s blown away.

He starts to realize he likes you when you start hanging around him more.

You help him as best you can when he comes to you for answers, you’re very smart, you just have a very different way of doing your work from him.

When he finally decides to make the move, he’s shitting bricks. He’s nervous, and totally freaking out because he doesn’t even know if you like him.

“Uh hey, (Y/n)?” Midoriya pulls you aside after class, stopping you before you leave the classroom.

“What is it Izu?” You ask, having given him the cute nickname after being on a first name basis with him.

“I was wondering, well if you’d like to go on a date with me.” Midoriya gained some confidence after the sentence came out, looking at you with determination and affection.

“Sure, when and where?” You smiled, feeling your face begin to heat up.

“Wherever you want, there’s a really nice restaurant that opened up nearby-”

“Sounds like fun.” You glance away and smile. You had butterflies in your stomach.

“Are you nervous?” Midoriya asked, watching as you seemed to be a little anxious yourself.

“A little. My crush just asked me out so...” You giggle.

“You’re nervous about me asking you out but not finishing a project the day it’s due?!”

“Those are two totally different things!”

I feel like Todoroki knows from the get go that you don’t study. He never sees you in the study groups, or in the library. He always sees you doing some sort of paperwork in the morning, and he catches on rather quickly that it’s last night’s homework, or an assignment from earlier on in the week.

Still, he can’t jump to conclusions just yet.

He overhears Kirishima talking to Kaminari about you. He’s not trying to eavesdrop on their conversation but he’s curious nonetheless.

“Yeah, I don’t think they study at all.” Kirishima tells Kaminari.

Todoroki is pretty intrigued now.

Starts investigating to see if you actually study or not. And when he doesn’t find anything to say that you do, he just waits for the exam results to come back.

He knows you didn’t study, no one accounted for you at any study groups, and Sero even said you’d gone to bed after training that afternoon.

When the results come back, Todoroki is dumbfounded.

You did better than him. You landed a whole three spots above him. 

Todoroki makes it his goal to talk to you now. And you two become really good friends, and Todoroki develops this crush on you.

He’s not sure how it even happened, all he knows is he likes you and everything about you intrigues him.

So when you’re hanging out in his dorm room, just talking and chilling out, he asks if you want to study for the next quiz coming up.

“Oh I don’t actually study.” You giggle, looking at the half-and-half boy you had a crush on.

“You don’t?” Todoroki restates, finally confirming all his suspicions.

“Nope. It doesn’t really do much for me, I’ve never really studied.” 

From then on out, Todoroki enjoys when you accompany him while he studies. He studies alone just to be able to spend time with you.

Especially when he asks you out.

“(Y/n)?” Todoroki glances up from his work sheet and you look up from the book he’d lent you to read while he worked on his assignments.

“Yeah Sho?” You smile at him, closing the book, holding your spot with your thumb.

“Would you like to go on a date after school soon?” He asks, getting the question he’d been wanting to ask off his chest finally.

“Yes.” Your eyes lit up at his question and you could feel your face getting hotter by the second.

“You look hot.” Todoroki comments on your flustered face which only deepens at his comment.

“I didn’t mean- I mean you are very beautiful but your face looked hot as in temperature.” Todoroki’s own face begins to flush at his fumbled words as you begin to smile and laugh.

“You’re too cute.” You grin at him. He smiles back and returns to his work, ready to take you on that date.

Kaminari has no clue. He’s oblivious. I don’t think he’s as stupid as people make him seem but he certainly doesn’t catch on right away, it takes a bit of time.

And one loud mouthed explosive blonde haired friend of his to point it out.

“I was gonna ask them to study with us after class.” Kaminari states, telling the group about his first move to try and ask you out. He’s had a crush on you since he laid eyes on you, and he’s shooting his shot.

“You dumbass. They don’t study.” Bakugou groans, looking over at you, scrambling to finish your homework.

“That’s the homework from last night.” Bakugou points out to Kaminari and his eyes go wide.

“There’s no way they’re going to pass!” Kaminari exclaims.

“We have to go help them!” Kaminari is about to go rush over to you but Kirishima stops him and laughs.

“Just wait, you’ll see.” Kirishima reassures Kaminari.

And sure enough, when the homework gets returned, Kaminari watches as your paper returns with the highest marking. You passed. With a perfect score.

This doesn’t stop Kaminari from shooting said shot though. He’s trying even harder. He’s determined.

"So there’s that big test coming up.” Kaminari began talking to you about three weeks ago, you’ve become friends, and you both have mutual feelings for one another that the other doesn’t know about, but it’s pretty obvious to the surrounding friends in the Bakusquad.

He’s talking to you about the test coming up with all of the subjects you’ve covered so far, a bit of a mid-term if you will.

“I’m a little nervous about it if I’m being honest.” You admit, taking a bite of your lunch.

“Do you wanna study with us later tonight?” Kaminari asks, feeling volts coarse through his veins as he awaits your answer.

“Studying isn’t really my thing. It’s not that I don’t want too! Please don’t think I’m trying to avoid you guys.” You bite your lip and look away trying to come up with the right words to say.

“Studying crams my brain and I don’t really think fluidly when the test comes, I get worse grades when I study then when I don’t.”

“I’ll stop by after with snacks and drinks so you don’t feel left out then.” Kaminari grins, his amber eyes full of excitement.

And sure enough, he stops by, a few slices of pizza and some soda in hand.

“So I was thinking, me and you.” Kaminari starts. You’re playing some video games before lights out.

“Me and you?” You question, currently beating Kaminari in Mario Kart.

“Yeah like, would you wanna go out sometime?” He asks, smiling.

“Sure, that could be a lot of fun.” Your face begins to heat up, and you lose your spot to Kaminari as your mind begins to scream with excitement. You feel your heart beating faster.

“Wait really?” Kaminari turns to look at you pausing the game.

“Yes. I like you, and I want to go on ad ate with you.” You smile, setting the controller down.

“Oh this is awesome!” Kaminari hugs you.

The next day when the test is over, the Bakusquad stands dumbfounded as you pass the test with the highest score, even beating Bakugou.

Kaminari is proud.

The Rhys/Tamlin 180 in ACOMAF makes me mad! Like there’s wasted potential there, even if Rhys is endgame. The concept of after the happily ever after is actually pretty cool. There’s real potential in looking at how Tamlin and Feyre deal with the trauma of Amarantha. Having two people realized they’re not right together while still respecting each other is a more adult take than “surprise, Tamlin sux now”, and allows for Feyre to actually make real choices and grow. What's your ACOMAF rewrite?

Ok my thoughts are not quite coherent rn so I’ll try to make sense. I’ve tried writing this like 4 times and every time it just doesn’t work so bear with me here thank you I love you ok here we go. 

Ok I’m gonna start by saying that there is something to be said about Feyre as the narrator and her being an “unreliable” narrator of sorts. The story is about her, told from her perspective. I don’t expect her to have objective views of what happens around her. one thing I found interesting was that she said in conversations with people that she knew Tamlin was struggling, but when we would be listening to her internal monologue, when she thought of him it was mostly to blame him for not knowing she was struggling. (or if he did know, he didn't do anything about it) So like, same thing with the whole thing with Rhysand's mom and sister, we don't know what Tamlin thinks or feels about the situation because he doesn't talk about it and Feyre never asks. (But oh DAMN Sarah should not have given me room to speculate.) Like, UTM broke Feyre right, she tells us that much. Why are we not allowed to believe that it destroyed Tamlin too.

Here we are again, just like with Rhysand's family. I don't blame Feyre for literally needing help, and I do blame Tamlin for not helping her, but to a degree. I hated how the whole situation was handled like Tamlin was shit for not trying to help Feyre (even tho he was, just not in the way she needed), but then Feyre literally not lifting a single finger to try to help Tamlin is ok because he's a man and he can just suck it up and take it. ???? No ? That's not how we handle trauma? Like, my homeboy is fighting a losing battle against this shit and he's the one who's gotta fix everything for Feyre?

But like you said, just a tiny little bit of helpful communication would have done wonders. How about a lil, "hey you ok?" ???? LETS TALK ABOUT IT! Let's talk about how we're falling out of love, let's talk about what Tamlin experienced under the mountain, let's talk about what Feyre experienced under the mountain, let's talk about how maybe we were never good for each other and how we move on with our lives from that! POTENTIAL !! LETS HAVE THEM GROW "Surprise! Tamlin sucks now!" bitch how. Literally how. How did this happen. How did we get here. Tell me. I want to know SJm. Stop being a coward and tell me. You know what, I'll do it for you.

Alrighty guys once again, I love Tamlin with my whole chest, but I do put a hefty chunk of this on him. From what SJm tells us about Tamlin, he is a fearful individual. His responses to fear are either to freeze or to explode. Both extremes hurt people around him. His actions hurt people, and his lack of action hurts people. Also, for as often as he says the word sorry, he doesn't really show any signs of change or improvement. While I understand that yes , changing your behavior is hard, especially if you're not getting help and don't know how, Tamlin still could have tried a little more, pushed just a little harder, and yes, he could have been better.

But Tamlin is scared. He's scared of things outside of his control, he's scared of change, he's scared of people he loves leaving him or getting hurt. I'm willing to bet he's scared of himself, and rightfully so. He lashes out and it only ever hurts people. I can't believe he's blind to it. When he destroys the study, he's clearly afraid he hurt Feyre.

(i think I’m gonna do my acomaf rewrite headcanons in a different post, every time I try to write them here it doesn’t flow oooof lemme know if thats something you want ahahah I could talk about this shit forever)

BUT AT THE SAME TIME, I know I've said this before: in my opinion, Tamlin has the best depiction of trauma in the whole fucking series. PTSD is a bitch and Tamlin is losing to it. The thing I loathed about acomaf/the beginning of Acowar is how Tamlin isn't given help and then treated like an absolute asshole for it. SJm could have done so much if she had Tamlin learn to ask for help. We can't all just have a Rhysand who knows every thought we have. Sometimes we have to ask for help, as much as we don't want to. That would have done wonders for Tamlin's character arc. And I think that he should have leaned heavily on Lucien for that.

Now look, Lucien deserves a lifetime of free chiropractor visits to relieve the soreness from carrying the entire series solely by himself on his own back. If I'm the one to pay for that for him, so be it. I would do anything for this man.

Lucien deserved so much better than to be bulldozed by the narrative. I refuse to believe that he would let Tamlin use him as a doormat. Lucien deserved to tell Tamlin off on his behavior ok. Lucien deserved a fucking backbone that he had all of acotar and then SJm decided that he was the character who got to suffer for the decisions of every other characters so they didn't have to. Stupid. (At this point I wouldn't be surprised if Rhysand's cum from having sky sex with Feyre fell directly on Luciens face. That's how much SJm likes pummelling him)

Lucien deserves to be strong and tough and emotionally available, especially for Tamlin. I don't think he deserves to be abused by his best friend. I've read fics that make Tamlin like this jackass who's not sad at all that Amarantha forced him to whip his best friend. Are you fucking kidding me. I feel like if Tamlin was going to cling like hell to someone through all of the shit before, during and after UTM, it should be lucien. But no SJm needs us to know Tamlin is a bad guy now. He hurts everyone with no remorse!!! What a villain!!! That was a sin.

Acomaf deserved to be two people talking about how maybe this relationship wasn't going to work out. This book deserved to be Tamlin getting up the courage to as Lucien for help. This book deserved to be Lucien always telling Tamlin that he would be there for him and us getting to watch the two of them overcoming their hardships together. This book deserved to be Feyre choosing her own path, choosing her own family, choosing to live her life as she wanted.

But nah. Rhysand's got a fat cock and uhhh y'all need to like it more than y'all like Tamlin's dick. Also Rhysand is a feminsisist. So suck it.

(If this book was really about giving Feyre a choice, SJm would let her make actual decisions that actually impacted herself and the story instead of just having Rhysand give her two extremes with one of them being obviously the right choice and then tell her whatever she wanted to do was her choice. Feminism.)

Did any of that make any sense. Any at all. No? Yeah I didn't think so anyways I've spent like a week on this I'm tired and I wanted to get it out there. Acomaf was a mess but at least it wasn't Acowar hahahahaha

okay yeah actually, i’ll bite. i’ve got some of my own thoughts about the unsleeping city and cultural representation and i’m gonna make a post about them now, i guess. i’ll put it under a cut though because this post is gonna be long.

i wanna start by saying i love dimension 20 and i really really enjoy the unsleeping city. i look forward to watching new episodes every week, and getting hooked on d20 as a whole last summer really helped pull me out of a pandemic depression, and i’m grateful to have this cool show to be excited about and interested in and to have met so many cool people to talk about it with.

that being said, however, i think there is a risk run in representing any group of people/their culture when you have the kind of setting that tuc has. by which i mean, tuc is set in a real world with real people and real human cultures in it. unlike fantasy high or a crown of candy where everything is made up (even if rooted in real-world cultures), tuc is explicitly rooted in reality, and all of its diversity -- both the ups and downs that go with it. and especially set in new york of all places, one of the most densely, diversely populated cities on earth. the cast is 7 people; it’s great that those 7 people come from a variety of backgrounds and identities and all bring their own unique perspectives to the table, and it’s great that those people and the entire crew are generally conscious of themselves and desire to tell stories/represent perspectives ethically. but you simply cannot authentically represent every culture or every perspective in the world (or even just in a city) when your cast is 7 people. it’s an impossible task. this is inherent to the setting, and acknowledged by the cast, and by brennan especially, who has been on record saying how one of the exciting aspects of doing a campaign set in nyc is its diversity, the fact that no two new yorkers have the same perspective of new york. i think that’s a good thing -- but it does have its challenges too, clearly.

i’m not going to go into detail on the question of whether or not tuc’s presentation of asian and asian american culture is appropriative/offensive or not. first of all, i don’t feel like it’s 100% fair to judge the show completely yet, since it’s a prerecorded season and currently airing midseason, so i don’t yet know how things wrap up. secondly, i’m not asian or asian american. i can have my own opinions on that content in the show, but i think it’s worth more to hear actual asian and asian american voices on this specific aspect of the show. having an asian american cast member doesn’t automatically absolve the show of any criticisms with regard to asian american cultural representation/appropriation, whether those criticisms are made by dozens of viewers or only a handful of them. regardless, i don’t think it’s my place as someone who is not asian to speak with any authority on that issue, and i know for a fact that there are asian american viewers sharing their own opinions. their thoughts in this instance hold more water than mine, i think.

what i will comment on in more depth, though, is a personal frustration with tuc. i’m jewish; i’ve never really been shy about that fact on my page here. i’m not from new york, but i visit a few times a year (or i did before covid anyway, lol), and i have some family from nyc. nyc, to me, is a jewish city. and for good reason, since it’s home to one of the largest jewish populations of the country, and even the world, and aspects of jewish culture (including culinary, like bagels and pastrami, and linguistic, like the common use of yiddish words and phrases in english colloquial speech) are prevalent and celebrated among jews and goyim alike. when i think of nyc, i think of a jewish city; that’s not everybody’s new york, but that’s my new york, and thats plenty of other people’s new york too. so i do find myself slightly disappointed or frustrated in tuc for its, in my opinion, rather stark lack of jewish representation.

now, i’m not saying that one of the PCs should have been jewish, full stop. i love to headcanon iga as jewish even though canon does not support that interpretation, and i’m fine with that. she’s not my character. it’s possible that simply no one thought of playing a jewish character, i dunno. but also, and i can’t be sure about this, i’m willing to bet that none of the players really wanted to play a jewish character because they didn’t want to play a character of a marginalized culture they dont belong to in the interest of avoiding stereotyping or offensive representation/cultural appropriation. (i don’t know if any of the cast members are jewish, but i’m assuming not.) and the concern there is certainly appreciated; there’s not a ton of mainstream jewish rep out there, and often what we get is either “unlikeable overly conservative hassidic jew” or “jokes about their bar mitzvah/one-off joke about hanukkah and then their jewishness is never mentioned ever again,” which sucks. it would be really cool to see some more good casual jewish rep in a well-rounded, three-dimensional character in the main cast of a show! even if there are a couple of stumbles along the way -- nobody is perfect and no two jews have the same level of knowledge, dedication, and adherence to their culture.

but at the same time, i look at characters like iga and i really do long for a jewish character to be there. siobhan isn’t polish, yet she’s playing a characters whose identity as a polish immigrant to new york is very central to her story and arc. and part of me wonders why we can’t have the same for a jewish character. if not a PC, then why not an NPC? again, i’m jewish, and i am not native, but in my opinion i think the inclusion of jj is wonderful -- i think there are even fewer native main characters in mainstream media than there are jewish ones, and it’s great to see a native character who is both in touch with their culture as well as not being defined solely by their native-ness. to what extent does it count as ‘appropriative’ because brennan is a white dude? i dunno, but i’m like 99% sure they talked to sensitivity consultants to make sure the representation was as ethical as they could get it, and anyway, i can’t personally see and glaring missteps so far. but again, i’m not native, and if there are native viewers with their own opinions on jj, i’d be really interested in hearing them.

but getting back to the relative lack of jewish representation. it just...disappoints me that jewishness in new york is hardly ever even really mentioned? again, i know we’re only just over halfway through season 2, but also, we had a whole first season too. and it’s definitely not all bad. for example: willy! gd, i love willy so much. him being a golem of williamsburg makes me really really happy -- a jewish mythological creature animated from clay/mud (in this case bricks) to protect a jewish community (like that of williamsburg, a center for many of nyc’s jews) from threat. golem have so often been taken out of their original context and turned into evil monsters in fantasy settings, especially including dnd. (even within other seasons of d20! crush in fh being referred to as a “pavement golem” always rubbed me the wrong way, and i had hoped they’d learned better after tuc but in acoc they refer to another monster as a “corn golem” which just disappointed me all over again.) so the fact that tuc gets golems right makes my jewish heart very happy.

and yet...he doesn’t show up that much? sure, in s1, he’s very helpful when he does, but in s2 so far he shows up once and really does not say or do much of anything. he speaks with a lot more yiddish-influenced language than other characters, but if you didn’t know those words were specifically yiddish/jewish, you might not be able to otherwise clock the fact that willy is jewish. and while willy is a jewish mythological creature who is jewish in canon, he isn’t human. there are no other direct references to judaism, jewish characters, or jewish culture in the unsleeping city beyond him.

there are, in fact, two other canon jewish characters in tuc. but...here’s where i feel the most frustration, i think. the two canon jewish humans in tuc are stephen sondheim and robert moses. both of whom are real actual people, so it’s not like we can just pick and choose what their cultural backgrounds are. as much as i love stephen sondheim, i think there are inherent issues with including real world people as characters in a fictional setting, especially if they are from living/recent memory (sondheim is literally still alive), but anyway, sondheim and moses are both actual jewish people. from watching tuc alone you probably would not be able to guess that sondheim is jewish -- nothing from his character except name suggests it, and i wouldn’t even fault you for not thinking ‘sondheim’ is a jewish-sounding surname (and i dislike the idea/attitude/belief that you can tell who is or isn’t jewish by the sound of their name). and yeah, i’m not going to sit here and be like “brennan should have made sondheim more visibly jewish in canon!” because, like, he’s a real human being and it’s fucking weird to portray him in a way that isn’t as close to how he publicly presents himself, which is not in fact very identifiably jewish? i don’t know, this is what i mean by it’s inherently weird and arguably problematic to portray real living people as characters in a fictional setting, but i digress. sondheim’s jewish, even if you wouldn’t know it; not exactly a representation win.

and then there’s bob moses. you might be able to guess that he’s jewish from canon, actually. there’s the name, of course. but more insidious to me are the specifics of his villainy. greedy and powerhungry, a moneyman, a lich whose power is stored in a phylactery...it does kind of all add up to a Yikes from me. (in the stock market fight there’s a one-off line asking if he has green skin; it’s never really directly acknowledged or answered, but it made me really uncomfortable to hear at first and it’s stuck with me since viewing for the first time.) the issue for me here is that the most obviously jewish human character is the season’s bbeg, and his villainy is rooted in very antisemitic tropes and stereotypes.

i know this isn’t all brennan’s fault -- robert moses was a real ass person and he was in fact jewish, a powerhungry and greedy moneyman, a big giant racist asshole, etc. i’m not saying that jewish characters can’t be evil, and i’m not saying brennan should have tried to be like “this is my NPC robert christian he’s just like bob moses but instead he’s a goy so it’s okay” because...that would be fuckin weird bro. and bob moses was a real person who was jewish and really did do some heinous shit with his municipal power. i’m not necessarily saying brennan should have picked/created a different character to be the villain. i’m not even saying that he shouldn’t have made bob moses a lich (although, again, it doesn’t 100% sit right with me). but my point here is that bob moses is one of a grand total of three canon jewish characters in tuc, of which only two humans, of whom he is the one you’d most easily guess would be jewish and is the most influenced by antisemitic stereotypes/tropes. had there been more jewish representation in the show at all, even just some neutral jewish NPCs, this would not be as much of a problem as it is to me. but halfway through season 2, so far, this is literally all we get. and that bums me out.

listen, i really like tuc. i love d20. but the fact that it is set in a real world place with real world people does inherently raise challenges when it comes to ethical cultural representation. especially when the medium of the show is a game whose creatures, lore, and mechanics have been historically rooted in some questionable racial/cultural views. and dnd is making progress to correct some of those misguided views of older sourcebooks by updating them to more equitably reflect real world racial/cultural sensitivities; that’s a good thing! but these seasons, of course, were recorded before that. the game itself has some questionable cultural stuff baked into it, and that is (almost necessarily) going to be brought to the table in a campaign set in a real-world place filled with real-world people of diverse real-world cultures. the cast can have sensitivity consultants and empathy and the best intentions in the world, and they’ll still fuck up from time to time, that’s okay. your mileage may vary on whether or not it’s still worth sticking around with the show (or the fandom) through that. for me, it does not yet outweigh all the things i like about the show, and i’m gonna continue watching it. but it’s still very worth acknowledging that the cast is 7 people who cannot possibly hope to authentically or gracefully represent every culture in nyc. it’s an unfortunate limitation of the medium. yet it’s also still worthwhile to acknowledge and discuss the cultural representation as it is in the show -- both the goods and the bads, the ethically solid and the questionably appropriative -- and even to hold the creators accountable. (decently, though. i’m definitely not advocating anybody cyberbully brennan on twitter or whatever.) the show and its representation is far from perfect, but i also don’t think it ever could be. still, though, it could always be better, and there’s a worthwhile discussion to be had in the wheres, hows, and whys of that.

so this is the song i’ve latched onto for my mc dom. i have a headcanon (i think i’ve said it on main a lot, and i’ve even made edits for it) that after the breakup, which everyone else thinks is real, but they think is fake, but is actually real, dom drives to the studio super late at night and just belts out the lyrics while sobbing just to get them off of her shoulders. and it accidentally becomes a hit! which makes raleigh feel even more like shit

Avatar: The Last Airbender, Series Finale: Sozin’s Comet

In case you’re finding this post just by browsing the tags I’ve used for this post, this is the Watchathon, a blog where I’m hoping to watch an episode of a TV show every weekday, with a short blog post where I write down my thoughts as I watch. Each new thought starts with a hyphen and a bolded first word.

- Like so. Now that the introductions are over with, it’s time to break that one-episode-a-day rule and finish off Avatar: The Last Airbender with the climactic grand finale, Sozin’s Comet:

PART 1: THE PHOENIX KING

- Okay, so, Katara in the intro is still saying “He has a lot to learn before he’s ready to save anyone.” I could’ve sworn they removed that part by this point... Maybe that was just something for the DVD?

- I like that the “Previously on” segment is so long. It really emphasizes how much buildup there was to this. How much the Gaang has been through to get here.

- I gotta say, I was not expecting a beach party in this episode.

- Somehow, for reasons I can’t explain because I don’t understand them myself, this ambush from Zuko made the audio of Nicolas Cage saying “Surprise attack!” in Into the Spider-Verse play in my head.

- Zuko’s really lucky that he earned Katara’s forgiveness before this violent pop quiz, seeing as just a half season ago... “You take one step backwards... one slip up... give me one reason to think you might hurt Aang - and you won't have to worry about your destiny anymore. Because I'll make sure your destiny ends right then and there. Permanently.”

- It never occurred to me that we didn’t get details on the war meeting before now.

- I’d bet hearing about this plan is the thing that tipped the scales and fully convinced Zuko to join the Gaang, and prevent the genocide of the Earth Kingdom.

- It’s so nice to see Zuko being welcomed into the group hugs. Especially when it’s Katara who invites him.

- I like that Zuko is teaching Aang to redirect lightning, the same way Iroh taught him.

- Even before it’s made explicit, you can tell that Aang’s uneasy about the idea of killing.

- Toph is just delighting in her role as Melon Lord, isn’t she?

- Someone out there has definitely written an AU fanfic where someone gets killed during this training and it’s Toph’s origin story as the malicious Melon Lord. If not, then I will write it myself, and it shall be the crackiest crack fic that ever cracked.

- Y’know what, I wish Toph could’ve actually gone on a life-changing field trip with Zuko too! Everyone else got one...

- This scene of Sokka climbing into Appa’s mouth is even more uncomfortable once you’ve... well, once you’ve grown up and... Okay, I tried to put it subtly, but I just can’t: Once you’ve been cursed with the knowledge of what vore is.

- Well, there’s a bait-and-switch if I’ve ever seen one: “Azula, you’re the new Fire Lord!” “=)” “But I am now the Phoenix King and still your superior who you will answer to.” “=O”

- Nice to see June and her Shirshu make a comeback.

- Does this mean Aang wasn’t running away on purpose? I honestly thought he was just going to that island to get some alone time, maybe meditate or contact the previous Avatars’ spirits.

PART 2: THE OLD MASTERS

- I’m not sure if this is something I forgot from June’s first appearance, or if it’s actually just never been brought up before, but I didn’t know her Shirshu had a name.

- It’s sweet that Zuko is seeking out Iroh’s help. Even if the method of finding him is, ah, well... unorthodox.

- Even Avatar Roku doesn’t know where Aang is. And here I thought it was some Avatar thing that had never been brought up before.

- It’s nice to see these people make a comeback. Bumi, Piandao, even Jeong Jeong and Master Pakku are here for the finale.

- I am surprised that we didn’t get an interaction between Toph and Bumi, though. The man Aang wanted to teach him Earthbending, the girl who ended up doing it... But I guess there’s only so much time, and I don’t think there’s any scenes that could be deleted to make room for it.

- It seems like Aang is just searching for confirmation of his beliefs, rather than actually seeking wisdom.

- I like that we get to see Bumi taking full advantage of the eclipse to take back Omashu from the Fire Nation, instead of just being told about it.

- It’s nice to see so many past Avatars beyond just Roku and Kyoshi, Avatars that we never heard of before, but now we hear their stories. But all of these past Avatars echo the same sentiment that Aang should kill Ozai, even an Air Nomad Avatar.

- What can I say about this scene of Zuko and Iroh reuniting? Forgive me for echoing a post I made on my main blog, but this is a scene that’s both sweet and sad.

Sad, because Zuko’s abuse at the hands of Fire Lord Ozai left him anxiously expecting furious punishment for crimes much less than what he did to Iroh. He can’t even comprehend the idea that Iroh would forgive him. His expression while apologizing to Iroh clearly shows he’s expecting the worst.

Sweet, because Iroh still loves Zuko like his own son, and doesn’t even need to forgive him because he never felt anger at Zuko’s betrayal: Only sadness and a worry that Zuko had lost his way, truly lost his honor. And Iroh is so clearly happy to see that Zuko has found his destiny, and joined the fight against the Fire Nation.

I could go on and on about this scene... It’s my absolute favorite scene in the whole series and it brings me to tears every single time I see it.

Gosh... it’s gonna be so awkward going back to the jokes and little mundane thoughts after this, isn’t it?

- Okay, I have officially given up on the idea of finding out what the heck this island is.

- I like the smile on Katara’s face, when she’s asked to team up with Zuko and fight Azula.

- It’s nice to know that Iroh will get the opportunity to run that tea shop, even if Zuko won’t be there to work with him.

- Okay, okay, so the island was actually a lion turtle. Frankly, I’ve still got a lot of questions. Even some new ones.

- It’s nice to see that the Netlix subtitles aren’t ALLCAPS anymore.

PART 3: INTO THE INFERNO

- Gotta hand it to the music, it can make even a scene of Azula making a fuss over a non-pitted cherry rather unnerving.

- Azula’s... Azula-ness has gone straight up to eleven with her newfound role. Hasn’t it? What with all the banishments, even banishing the entire Dai Li.

- Sokka, Suki and Toph are the real dream team. 

- And we get a great final blind joke!

- I like that we get to see everyone doing their part in this final battle. All the members of the Gaang, even the White Lotus, get their moments to shine.

- The hallucination of Ursa shows that Azula, on some level, has an idea of what’s wrong with her. You can tell that they were thinking of a redemption arc for Azula come Book 4, though I am glad that didn’t happen.

- It’s chilling to see Ozai razing the forests of the Earth Kingdom like it’s nothing. And then to realize that this is what Aang will have to face.

- At first I wasn’t sure what Sokka’s plan was, but now that I see it in action, it’s really creative.

- I like the idea of a final one-on-one Zuko vs Azula duel(...a). It’s been a rivalry since Book 2, and it’s nice to finally see it get settled, even if I can’t imagine it’ll end up that easy: Otherwise, what would Katara do?

- It’s so cool to see Aang showing his prowess in all bending techniques, using them all in this final showdown.

- The background music during Zuko and Azula’s Agni Kai really sells it. It makes it sound almost tragic, and it is: two siblings pitted against each other, no choice but to fight to determine the future of the world.

- Azula might be slipping, but she’s still Azula, all too willing to cheat in what’s supposed to be a one-on-one duel.

PART 4: AVATAR AANG

- Netflix isn’t showing the intro for the individual parts, but I’ve gotta say... There’s no way that Katara’s still saying Aang’s “got a lot to learn before he’s ready to save anyone.” Right?

- I like that we get to see one last use of Metalbending from Toph in the finale.

- Dang, I hope this isn’t really the end for Sokka’s sword, or his boomerang. Especially when the sword was so cool, and one could say meaningful.

- I honestly wasn’t sure the Avatar State would ever be a factor again. But if there was ever a time, this is it. (ADDENDUM: This is probably the best time to clarify that I find and add the images at the start after writing the rest of the post.)

- And it’s so epic to see Aang bending all four elements at once.

- I like that Iroh got to burn down the Fire Nation flag.

- Since Zuko’s down for the count, I guess this means a battle between Katara and Azula, the latter powered up by Sozin’s Comet.

- To be honest, I could barely make out what Azula just said. “kjsdbksrbfkjvf family position to look after, kdcbkfh”?

- Katara may not be stronger than Sozin’s Comet-powered Azula, but she’s much more clever than Azula is right now as she loses her marbles.

- This is just the perfect kind of defeat for Azula. There’s no grace to it, no dignity, just writhing around, screaming and spewing fire as Zuko and Katara look on with pity.

- There’s probably a great practical reason someone could find for Spiritbending being a thing, but here’s why I’m glad it exists: Aang gets a happy ending. He gets to take down the Fire Lord, and hold true to his beliefs. If it weren’t for Spiritbending, if Aang killed Ozai, then he would be conflicted to the end.

And I don’t want that. I want Aang to get an unambiguously, undoubtedly happy ending, where the world is saved and that’s all there is to it.

Plus, Spiritbending is quite the spectacle.

- I’m guessing Sokka’s space sword and boomerang really are done for. But hey, there’s always headcanon. Maybe Sokka searched the forest and eventually found them.

- Weird to think that Ty Lee’s gonna be a Kyoshi Warrior.

- Again, I can’t believe Zukaang’s not the most popular Zuko ship in the fandom. Not a ship I’ll go to bat for, but it’s got all the hallmarks of a fan-preferred couple.

- It’s so nice to see Zuko’s coronation, and the official end to the war. It’s a happy ending for the whole world, the start of an era of peace.

- “Love and peace,” huh...? Now that’s funny to hear in the finale to this show, considering the next show I’m covering, come 2021...

- I like that we get to see one last confrontation between Zuko and Ozai. Even if Zuko’s question of where Ursa is doesn’t go anywhere (in the show, I know they touch on that in the comics), it’s nice to see the newly-crowned Fire Lord Zuko having evolved past a need for Ozai’s attention, or a fear of Ozai’s wrath.

- It’s nice to see the whole Gaang having fun at Iroh’s tea shop, in the end. And I stand corrected, this is where we get the final blind joke.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I’m lucky in that most of my childhood cartoons hold up as an adult. I watched Kim Possible, Phineas and Ferb, Code Lyoko, Courage the Cowardly Dog...

Still, there’s something special about Avatar: The Last Airbender. It had a unique aesthetic and world that no other show was quite like. It had a story that was like nothing I’d ever seen as a kid.

And it doesn’t just hold up, it’s even better.

When I was a kid, it was as simple as rooting for the good guys to win, and for the Firebenders to lose, except for Zuko once he turned good.

Now, as an adult (but mostly as someone with a DVD player/Netflix account so I’m not just watching whatever reruns I can catch) I can appreciate the character development, the arcs, the entire story.

I can appreciate how Aang grew from a little boy who does indeed have a lot to learn before he’s ready to save anyone, into a hero who could save the world.

I can appreciate how Zuko was an abuse victim who did what all abused children wish they could do and left his abuser.

I can appreciate... Gosh, Iroh’s entire character and dynamic with Zuko.

Some people say that Avatar “starts off as a kids show, then turns serious”, but I’d disagree. Avatar is a show where our heroes change, where they learn lessons, where they come of age and become the kind of heroes who can end a war that’s been going on for over a century.

As relieved as I am to be (mostly) done with these posts for the rest of the year, I am still oh-so-glad that I’ve rewatched Avatar yet again, and I know that I will be whenever I rewatch it in the future.

Now, with all that said... Farewell! Until the Christmas special, at least...

The first time Valkyrie Brunnhilde met Loki, he was nineteen. She was a beat cop back then, barely out of the academy. He had turned up at hospital on her shift badly beated and coming down from being high. At that time, no one had reported or knew about what happened a year previously. When she had gone to get his statement, she had quickly learned. Or least learned what Loki had felt divulging.

“My brother and I, we’ve been kidnapped.”

“By who?”

He had shook his head nervously. “You won’t believe me. You could be working for him. I shouldn’t have said anything. I-I just want to go home. Will you let me go home?”

“You said you were kidnapped. We’re not going to pump the breaks on something like that. Either you lied, which means I can arrest you for filing a false police report, or you tell me.” Looking back she knew she had been harsh with him. She was new, and hadn’t learned how to speak to victims.

Loki did however did tell her.

“The Grandmaster.”

“En Dwi Gast? The mob boss?”

“I knew you wouldn’t believe me.” He had sneered at her and nearly walked out of the hospital right then and there.

To this day, Val would never know how she had gotten him to stay. Possibly it was because the doctor refused to discharge Loki until he had spent a night for observation. Maybe it was because Loki knew this was his best shot at freedom. Whatever it was, she had gotten a small quick summary of the last year for the kid: he and his brother had been kidnapped from a bar while out celebrating. They had been kept in the basement of one of the eccentric mobster’s many homes for six months before being moved to one of his full floor penthouses.

“He leaves us with some of his men sometimes to be punished. He says he doesn’t like to see us hurt. I…I refused to…to give him head.”

“He’s raping you?”

“Both of us. Thor is still there. He left with him. To some other place. He separates us sometimes. When one of us is…when one of us doesn’t do as he says. You need to get Thor! Please! He’s my older brother and he’s always looked out for me! I’m adopted and…” He had looked away at that. “Please help.”

“I will, you have my word.”

She had given him her information, promising to return with detectives and the full weight of the NYPD. When she did return the next morning with two detectives from SVU and one from Major Crimes, she found him gone. The doctor explained that Loki’s brother and ‘a family friend’ had came early in the morning and picked him up. He had gone willingly. Security video showed the ‘family friend’ to be a lieutenant of the Sakaar mob family.

“You’ll see him again,” the Major Crimes detective had assured her. “Or what’s left of him once they melt him down.”

That turned out not to be the case. For the next four years, Loki and Thor were frequent flyers in several ERs around the city. A few times Loki even requested her, and she would rush to see him. Half the time she barely caught sight of him as a another ‘family friend’ escorted him out. The other half, when she did see him, he was increasingly not willing to follow up on his first claim of being kidnapped.

“If I say anything, Thor could get hurt! Or worse! It happened the first time. He was so mad. He made Thor sleep in the basement after….,” he fiddled with the hospital gown. “Can you tell our parents…that we love them? And our sister. We’re okay, honest.”

“Loki,” Val had said gently, “you have a broken arm and bruises from head to toe and your came in here so fucking high you were nearly overdosing. You’re not okay.”

“Please.”

After that, Val switched tactics. Mostly because she had been promoted from beat cop to Narcotics, but also a feeling she needed to do something more. She leaked several of her interviews and notes about Loki and Thor to the press. After all, she reasoned, En Dwi Gast was a provocateur and press junkie. Exposed in such a way by the very journalists, pundits, and hosts whose attention he sought may make him slip up and lead to Loki and Thor being free.

That was not the case.

First, Loki was picked in a raid on a drug den owned by the Sakaar mob. He was overdosing and had to get his stomach pumped. On him, he still carried her card, so she was called on the assumption this was one of her informers.

It was at this point she met Thor for the first time. He had come to the hospital alone. It was hard to believe the tall muscular man was a prisoner. That was until he spoke. There was a hollowness in the eyes she was beginning to recognize from abuse victims and a stuttering in the voice at times. He seemed unable to truly stare at her directly, speaking to a tile right behind her head. When he spoke to Loki is was heartbreaking.

“I could have lost you. I’d be alone…with Him.”

“I didn’t mean…I just wanted to forget for a little while.”

“Not like that. Never like that. Promise me, you will throw everything away.”

“For me?”

Neither wanted to speak about Grandmaster.

“He’s….we’re his companions.” Thor told the bedside cabinet.

They left the hospital in a cab they hired, their destination was the Gladiator Hotel.

After that, they were seen often. By everyone in New York. They were beside the Grandmaster as he opened up a new wrestling stadium. They joined him on calls to the most popular radio call and morning talk shows in town. They were with him at art galleries, opera houses, and sporting events. They smiled and cuddled close as cameras flashed. They flirtatiously bantered.

“So Loki about those articles-”

“Oh God!”

“Claiming you were kidnapped-”

“Oh I remember this now-”

“Lies and lies! Utter shi-”

“Uh Lo Lo there’s kids listening. It’s a family show!”

“We were talking about morning sex like two minutes ago. No, but to answer your question, I honestly don’t know where people get this nonsense!”

“Like my supposed ties to the Russian mob, like honestly!”

“Apparently you’ve been in the hospital-”

“I’m a recovering addict! What I did is in the past!”

That exchange happened the day she was transferred to Major Crimes. Val remembered listening to it with a few other detectives, feeling sick in her stomach. It would be a year into her transfer that she finally told her new partner about her history with the ‘Grandmaster’s boys".

“Fuck. I mean, y'know you did everything you could right,” Bruce Banner said from over his plate.

“Apart from killing the bastard.”

“Gast has been doing all sort of shit for twenty five years. I bet these two aren’t his first…boys.”

“Has he kept them this long before though?”

“I honestly don’t know. You said their Odin Valhalla’s kids, right? Maybe, he’s using them to get to the Dad?”

“I honestly think in he some twisted fucked up way thinks he loves them. Like he a kid loves his toys…”

Three more years passed. Val kept most articles about Loki and Thor, any that had even a shred of ambiguity. She tried to get in contact with Odin, the famous attorney. At first, he politely refused to speak about ‘private family matters’. After his wife died, however, he threatened to have her charged with harassment.

It was freezing day in January. The sun barely warmed anyone as it shone down. Val had stopped at Starbucks and had picked her usual latte and Bruce’s tea. She had barely sat down the tray and asked about the daily reports when her desk phone rang.

“Is this Officer Valkyrie Brunnhilde?”

“Detective, but yes.”

“This is Dr Jane Foster…do you know a Loki Valhalla?”

She nearly dropped the phone. “Yes.”

“He’s here an-”

“How long has he been there?”

“Three days.”

“Is he….dead?”

“Oh no! He’s um…he’s in recovery. He was dropped in front of the ER. He was barely conscious and severely injured. We feared we could have lost time for awhile. When he woke up, he asked for you. Are you his next of kin?”

“Right now, yes. Give the address.” She made motions to Bruce to hand over a pad of paper and pen. She wrote it down hastily. “You wanna go take down Sakaar?”

“I don’t even get to enjoy my tea?”

“I’ll drive. Call this number. It’s to Hela Valhalla. Tell her she needs to call meet me tonight. Usual place.”

“Now I’m a secretary!” But he was smiling. “What do we got?”

“We got Loki. He’s been in the hospital for two days. No lawyers, no thugs, no Gast.”

“No Thor?”

“Nope. We have to go. Now.”

Season 8

I’ve seen a lot of discussion about Season 8 lately, most of you hate it, or at least the first half. Understandable really, it was a train wreck! I will go on record to say that yes, Sam was very OOC for not looking for Dean, but it’s canon, so we do have to accept it. 

I do think however, I may understand what Carver was going for with it. I’m not saying it was executed well, but from what all happened in the previous seasons, I think it was very important to establish who the brothers are to each other. Looking back through every season before this one, though there were some very good broments a lot the way, there were a lot of unnecessary fights, lies, insults and mistrust. How could they really sell to us how deeply they love each other while they keep hurting each other so badly? 

In this essay, I may come down hard on both brothers at times. Please dont take it that I hate either or that I’m a stan for one or the other. I love these boys... flaws and all, so if you’re okay hearing your fav isnt always perfect (whichever bro that might be) please continue :)

In the beginning of Season 8, we have this strange, awkward, and OOC clusterfuck that we all blame bad writing for. And it was, I agree, and so do Jared and Jensen, but they both love where it led and are proud of the finished product. 

I’ll start with the major OOC elephant in the room that is Sam not looking for Dean. He never really gives us a reason, even though later in the season he says that his whole world imploded, came raining down on him and he ran. We have to keep that as the only canonical reason as to why he didn't, so we only have headcanons to fill in the blanks. My main concern with it really is just that I am sure that Sam would have at least established Dean was dead for real, before moving on. There were no bodies, or even any blood, to indicate that Dean might be dead. I do believe that Sam would have or should have at least bought an Ouija Board , but then what could he do? Everyone he knew who could help him was dead. All the lore books they’d been using for 7 years were burned up in Bobby’s house. All that was left was Dad’s journal which had very little information in it. So he accepts Crowley’s words “You are in fact truly on your own”, fixed up the Impala and drove. 

I don't believe Sam was suicidal. Crushed yes, depressed as hell but he won't kill himself without helping people in some way. Same with Dean. They may have wanted to die and would welcome death many times, but they're selfless martyrs, they won't eat a bullet or drive off a bridge, unless it was for a greater good. So Sam didnt look for Dean, because “Dean wouldnt want that” as we saw how pissed Dean was at Sam in S4 when he thought Sam sprung him from Hell, Sam had to remember that.  Sam also knows he wanted Dean to have a normal life when he was gone, and Dean was nearly successful. Also, in the very same episode that Dean apparently died in, Bobby told them both upon leaving, “when it’s your time... go” So Sam most likely thought Dean would be proud of him if he moved on. That IS why Dean taught him how to fix the Impala a few years back right?

So Sam tries to move on. I hated Amelia, but I dont think we were ever supposed to really like her or “ship” them, we were supposed to feel the fakeness, how awkward and just wrong it was. Sam never looked content with her, even though once she stopped treating him like trash, he smiled a lot, he never seemed happy. She was nothing more to him than a grief partner and a physical distraction. He probably enjoyed playing house though, having a dog, getting a paycheck, but it wasn't really his life. 

Meanwhile, Dean is in Purgatory with Cas and Benny, fighting monsters every day all day for a year. And this isn't a bad place for Dean honestly, he even referred to it as his “happy place” later, but it wasn't home, and Sam wasn't there. So in addition to slashing monsters all day, Dean was trying to find his way out to get back to Sam and their life. 

Dean comes out and finally, he meets back up with Sam. The reunion hug was amazing! One of my favorites. they both looked genuinely happy to be with their brother again, but it was sadly short-lived.  When Dean told Sam he wasn’t dead, he was in Purgatory, you can see the color leave Sam’s face. Like “Shit, I fucked up, I should have looked for him.” and then comes Sam’s big reveal that he got out of hunting. Watch how he says this. He’s not hiding it, he’s kind of cheerful about it, not like when Dean came back from Hell and he knew he was doing something Dean would be pissed at, he may have THOUGHT Dean would be pleased that he tried to move on, but obviously, Dean was not. 

Im not blaming either of them for what they felt. They’re both justified in it. Sam felt like Dean would want this for him, and Dean felt like Sam was out there looking for him, or at least missing him terribly, and needed to get back. Imagine if you will, as each other's spouse. One goes off to war, goes MIA and is presumed dead, though no body is found. It may have been established beforehand that if anything happened to the soldier, that his remaining spouse is to move on with their life. However the soldier isn't dead, he’s a POW and he busts his ass for a year to try to get home. You bet he’s going to be pissed off when he gets home to see his spouse DID move on and didn't even ask for proof he was dead first. 

Now we have Dean angry with Sam, Sam feeling guilty, but not willing to take the griping, so he’s going to fire back, and start threatening to leave. We have known from day 1 that Dean doesn't want Sam to abandon him. But he feels like Sam abandoned him in Purgatory, and now he’s trying to abandon him in the real world. 

I feel like, at this point, Sam felt like he had the upper hand. He had the “Stop nagging me or I'm out” card, but he didn't know Dean had a card left to play either. He had the “Leave me and I'll replace you” card.  This takes us to when Sam met Benny. Sam had been looking at schools again, weighing his options, so Dean thought it was time to introduce him to Benny. 

Dean hadn't seen Benny since they got back, so had he and Sam been in good graces, I don't think Dean would have run out to help him when he called, or at least he wouldn't have been secretive about it, but they were on shaky terms and if Sam wanted to play emotional chicken with him, Dean can play this game too. There was no reason at all for Dean to have told Sam to meet him at the dock. Dean had his car, Sam had to steal one to get there. Sam rushes because he thinks Dean needs him, and now he’s not answering his phone, and Sam is panicking. Dean had told him he was on this hunt with a friend, but Dean doesnt have any friends right? Certainly none he can trust to have his back in a hunt right? Dean must be in trouble! However, when Sam gets to the dock, Dean is pulling up with this big dude. The camera focuses on Sam and Benny’s hands long enough for us to notice that Benny’s hand is bigger than Sam’s. Sam turns from pissed off brother, reluctant hunting partner, to jealous spouse in 60 seconds. He goes for his blade, he’s going to kill this bastard! Dean shakes his head.... “no”. Sam had no idea Benny was a Vamp at that point, he was going to kill his replacement. Dean got this, oh so smug look on his face “Go ahead and leave me.... but don't think I’ll be alone”.

I'm going to leave it there because I don't want to analyze the entire season. What I want to show you is that Carver must have wanted to deconstruct the entire relationship, look at each piece of it, and show it to us, and then put it back together by the end of the season. By the end of Sacrifice, we learned Dean doesn't want to be without Sam but is willing to let Sam go and live his normal life, but to do that Dean wants to go out saving the world so Sam and everyone else can be safe. Sam doesn't want to be without Dean, but he thinks he's lost Dean’s trust, and he’s been replaced by Benny, Cas and holds Dean back from doing what he wants, so he’s going to save the world, even though it’s going to kill him in the process. 

Dean had told Sam that he didn't burn Benny’s body when he killed him, and Sam said he understood, and he might need him later. 

So I hope you can see why I feel Carver did this. I for one knew that Sam and Dean loved each other, but I honestly didnt see this “nothing comes before you” type bond before S8. So he took everything, from the very root, in the beginning, and laid it all out on the table for us, before giving us this epic defining moment in the Church between Sam and Dean. Sam would rather die than lose his place with Dean, and Dean would rather kill them all and let the world burn than to lose Sam, 

So even though I think the beginning was poorly executed, I do appreciate what it was showing us and I love the finished product. There hasn't been a more defining season in the whole series. As much as you might hate S8, you probably wont ever put the church scene out of your mind, and what led up to it. So, in my humble opinion, rocky start Mr Carver, but well played 🙌

Villainous Heroics - Chapter 7

Apparently daily updates are a thing - who knew! Just a quick headcanon to throw at you all, but I briefly mention that Aizawa teachers Hero Ethics as a class besides just his homeroom, which is something I picked up from @deafmic’s stories over on AO3 and Tumblr. They're really good and they're usually about EraserMic and Aizawa and Shinsou father son stuff, so give them a read if you can!

Yamada Hizashi learns that there is more to heroics and villainy than he could have ever thought - especially in a world where some heroes still care about those lost in the shadows.

                                            Chapter Seven

“Seriously? He actually went and made his own radio station?” Nemuri’s shocked tone faded and was quickly followed by wild laughter that had Shota wincing as he dragged the phone away from his ear. Her laugh was often worse than the sound of feedback. “And he’s still calling himself a villain! Does he even know what a villain is?”

“Probably not,” Shota sighed quietly, settling back on his couch under a heap of blankets and a purring Jelly. It was one of his rare nights off work and he was grateful for the chance to rest. His last fight as Eraserhead had been more taxing than he would have thought - even Mic had taken it easy on him in their fight a few days ago. “At least he’s not taking over radio stations anymore.”

“Oh, yeah, I heard about that - I think I managed to get reception to one of them, once!” There was a moment of thoughtful silence that Shota quickly realized wasn’t thoughtful at all. “He sounds really smitten with you, you know.”

“Please, his ‘love’ for me is just another game to play,” Shota said quickly, rolling his eyes as Jelly yowled loudly and Nemuri started lecturing him. “As I was saying when I started this call, I don’t know what to do about him.”

“Fuck him.” It wasn’t said as an insult, Shota realized after a moment, and Shota remembered his kidnapping and the song and dance Mic had done for him. He then hid himself under his blankets. “Or let him fuck you. You could do to have something up your ass that’s not a stick-”

“Nemuri,” Shota finally snapped, grateful that he was alone in his apartment and no one could see the blush that was no doubt staining his cheeks. Jelly could, of course, but Shota had faith that she wouldn’t tell on him. “I’m being serious.”

“You think I’m not?” Shota needed new friends because Kayama Nemuri was going to lead to his downfall, one day. She would at least have the decency to kill him herself, he supposed. “Okay, okay. You said he’s helping you on the Trigger case, right? Use that to get him more into hero work, maybe?”

“Possibly, but I doubt he’d be willing to work with any other heroes or even the police,” Shota said, shaking his head. “He hates the entire system of pro heroes - and for good reason, it seems like.”

“Ooh, a villain with a tragic past. Now you have me curious. Any idea behind all the details?” Nemuri finally sounded like she was taking this seriously, but Shota hesitated in telling her about the hearing aids Present Mic wore. That part seemed… personal.

“It seems he grew up in an area similar to mine and had problems with how people viewed his quirk like I did.” Really, their stories were near mirrors of each other. They had started the same, but Shota had gone on to become a bitter underground hero while Present Mic had gone on to be a cheerful villain. “The more I learn, the more it seems we had the same start.”

“Shota…” Nemuri was one of the few who knew about his past and his childhood, and if Shota had his way, then it would remain as just a few. “So, he’s trying to change the system to make sure kids don’t go through that. Jeez, he sounds like a hero, but he’s going about it with a villain’s strategy.”

“Villainous heroics,” Shota mumbled to himself, scratching Jelly behind the ear when she wiggled her way up his chest. “I’ve been listening in on his radio show, but I haven’t learned much else besides what songs are popular.”

“Shota, are you sure you’re listening to this radio station just to gather information? Because it sounds like you just want to hear his voice after having a horrible week.” That couldn’t be necessarily ruled out as a contributing factor, he conceded. “Holy shit, is that really why-”

“Of course not, Nemuri, stop seeing things that aren’t there. There is useful information scattered in there sometimes about active criminals in the area he lives in.” It was subtle, but Mic seemed to be slipping tip offs into his show every chance he had in just a way that only someone who knew what to look for could pick up on it. He really was wasted as a villain.

“Aw, Shota, you have an undercover boyfriend, that’s so cute!” At the cheerful tone, Shota reminded himself that Nemuri could never find out about when he had been kidnapped. “What’s the name of his new radio station, anyways?”

“It’s on 80.5,” Shota sighed, looking to where his radio was playing music with a slight static tinge. “He’s been calling it ‘Put Your Hands Up Radio.’”

“I’d almost be willing to call that adorable. Well, at least he’s well suited to being with you if he can stay up so late and still be coherent enough to host a radio show. How long does he host?”

“One to five on Fridays,” Shota frowned, reaching out to fiddle with the radio to try and get a clearer sound. “He plays music nonstop for forty-five minutes and then talks for fifteen before repeating the pattern.”

“Oh, Shota… You really do have it bad, don’t you?” The tone was soft and bordered on sympathetic, Shota feeling his heart speed up. Before he could defend himself, he heard Nemuri’s victorious shout. “Aha! Found it!”

“And that was Utada’s ‘Unbreakable’ which has climbed once again to reach number eight in the charts - as I told you dear listeners it would!” Mic’s voice, loud and delighted, filtered through Shota’s apartment and seemed to fill up every inch of empty space. Shota hated himself for how he relaxed back into his blankets and pillows.

“Shota,” Nemuri scolded loudly, Shota forced to move the phone a few inches back, again. “You didn’t tell me he had a voice like that! Does he look as good as he sounds?”

“Please return to hell,” Shota mumbled, trying to focus back in on Mic’s jabbering. It seemed he was taking in questions from his ‘loyal listeners.’ At least the man had the sense to use a burner phone to take in the calls.

“You’re on Put Your Hands Up Radio, listener! What can Present Mic do for you?” It made sense as to why the man was a villain after Shota had learned more of his past, but he really could have been so successful doing almost anything else.

“Yeah, hi, listen, I need your help to settle a bet.” Shota shot up, staring at the radio with narrowed eyes because he knew that voice. That was one of twenty voices he had to deal with every day.

“Shota.” Shota could hear Nemuri’s own suspicions. “Is that…?”

“Fire away, little listener! And then please get some rest - it’s almost three in the morning, you know!”

“Yes, but this is important.” Jiro Kyoka, one of his students, was calling into a radio show that was hosted by a villain. “What’s your opinion on Kaya’s new song ‘Later Lover?’ I need to prove that even villains can tell what music is actually good.”

“She’s getting detention,” Shota decided, ignoring Nemuri’s startled laugh. “What is she even doing up listening to this? There’s no way she finished her essay for Hero Ethics already.”

“You’re so mean to your students,” Nemuri gasped out, still laughing. Shota lowered his phone so he could focus on Mic’s laughter, instead.

“Well, little listener, I have to say that ‘Later Lover’ is quickly becoming a favorite of mine! It’s a lot different than what Kaya has done with her music up until this point, but I think the risk is really paying off! You can bet I’ll be one of the first in line to get her new album, which comes out next month!”

“Thank you! See, I told you-” Jiro’s voice cut out as the call ended, Mic still laughing, and it was so easy to picture his wide smile and scrunched up eyes that not even his sunglasses could hide.

“Alright, we still have a few minutes until the top of the hour, so let’s take another caller! What can I do for you, dear listener?”

“Oh, um, hi- Hi! So, uh, I was actually a bit curious about your quirk.” The new voice was almost drowned out by another burst of Nemuri’s laughter, Shota burying his face in his hands. He was going to have to expel that problem child. What were all his kids doing up at three in the morning listening to a villain’s radio show?

There was the quiet buzz of Midoriya’s rambling thoughts on the nature of Present Mic’s quirk, Mic himself sounding a little overwhelmed, “Oi, oi, just how many kids are listening to my show right now?”

Present Mic’s radio show appeared to have become a weekly event - to the point he would find a way to do it even when he was out doing one of his attention-grabbing schemes to prove the failed system of heroes and villains. Lately he had taken to dealing with threats and criminals before Shota could get there, and when Shota did arrive, Mic seemed to delight in fighting him, as well.

“Here I thought you had actually taken to being useful.” Enjoying how Mic jumped and scrambled off the bar counter he had been sitting on, Shota watched as he turned around and gave a wide grin.

“Aw, hello there, baby. Don’t get jealous, now, you know this is the best place to get word out - and I have a radio show to publicize now, you know!”

“And that involves tying up bartenders and terrorizing patrons, does it?” Shota looked to where the bartender and possible owner was indeed tied up and gagged, looking annoyed rather than scared.

“Only if they get in my way.” Mic quickly dodged Shota’s next lunge, grabbing an old, dented microphone and holding it out towards him. “Anything to say to my loyal listeners, hero?”

“Only that they should find a station that’s actually decent,” Shota snorted, watching as Mic clutched his heart and put on an exaggerated pout. “And that the kids who are listening to this trash need to turn it off and go to sleep.”

“Aw, you do listen, then!” Mic’s smile was the physical embodiment of sunshine and Shota almost wanted to squint his eyes at the sight of it. “Come on, baby, surely you want to give a few words of wisdom to my loyal listeners, here.”

“If they’re stupid enough to listen to this every week, then there’s no wisdom in them at all.” Snapping his scarf out, Shota smirked as it latched around Mic’s arm, the man giving him a grin in return as he adjusted his headphones - the same ones that Shota had returned by throwing them in his face the next time they met after their fight at the radio station.

“Sorry, listeners, I have to send you all on a music break a little early. I have a hero to teach a lesson to.” Mic twisted enough to loosen the scarf before kicking a loose bar stool towards Shota, the sudden action making him curse as he leapt out of the way. “See you next week, listeners!”

Shota wasn’t sure how long they fought until he was kneeling down next to a wrapped-up Mic, the man pouting with crooked glasses and a few strands of hair falling out of that ridiculous style of his.

“You didn’t say my name.” Shota let Mic look confused until the man figured out his words - as Shota knew he would. Present Mic seemed to have the ridiculous talent of always knowing what Shota meant.

“Of course not,” Mic tsked, shaking his head. “C’mon, Eraser.” The tone switched to something teasing, Mic giving him a smirk. “It wouldn’t be very nice of me to give out the name of an underground hero on a radio show, now would it?”

“Such a bad villain,” Shota muttered back, propping his chin up on his palm as he balanced on the balls of his feet, trying to hide his small smile. Shota had never been wrong, at least, when he had first realized that Present Mic broke up his usual night time routine for something far more interesting.

“There’s no need to go insulting me, hero,” Mic said softly, voice quiet and warm as he gave Shota a smile that didn’t seem faked or hidden behind too many secrets. “At least if I have to fight someone, it turned out to be you.”

Staring down at the sweetly smiling villain known as Present Mic, Shota was realizing just how screwed he was.

“My, my, Present Mic, you have been difficult to get a hold of.” At the average, friendly voice that wouldn’t have ever stood out on its own, Shota suddenly knew that something was wrong. Looking up from where he had been filling out paperwork for the police station, Shota stared at the radio where it was tuned in to Mic’s show.

“Oi, oi, of course I’m going to change numbers when some random person gets a hold of it!” Mic’s voice was bright and cheerful and lightly scolding, but Shota could tell it was a front. Mic was worried or, at the very least, on edge.

“I take it our product hasn’t been to your liking?” Product… Trigger. This had to be the man who had offered Mic the Trigger in the club - the polite one he had been talking about. “We do have others who detest the help themselves, I suppose.”

“Hey, now, Present Mic works alone, you know! I’m not up for joining some little club when I’ve been doing just fine on my own!” As Mic talked, Shota dug around his papers and work until he found an old tape recorder, quickly turning it on and starting to record. This could be useful for the case, if nothing else.

“The way I hear it, Present Mic, you haven’t been reaching your full potential. You’ve been in jail how many times this month alone? If you wish, I have associates who would be willing to help you finish dealing with your hero problem.”

This wasn’t just a Trigger dealer, then, but an entire operation of something that sounded far bigger. There had been an increase in villain activity over the last year or so… could this be a part of that?

“Jeez, you guys are really serious,” Mic muttered, sounding curious, but slightly unsure - just how they would expect him to sound. “Oi, you said something about an offer to help me and all that. ‘Shake the system of heroes and villains,’ yeah?”

“Indeed. My associates and I are in your type of business, Present Mic. I, and others in my line of work, represent a group of people who are intent are dismantling the current system of pro heroes. It’s really all quite messy, don’t you think? To leave the safety up to people who only care about their rankings?”

“Well, now you’re making sense!” Mic laughed, loud and dim and completely faked. “What kind of associates have you got? I might actually have to give that ‘product’ of yours a chance, now.”

“Let’s just say that we’re a league onto our own.” A league, huh… There was something dangerous rising up in the streets. “You still have my card. As I said before, this offer seems to appeal to you, doesn’t it?” There was a click that let Shota know the man had ended the call on his end, the radio buzzing with quiet static before he heard a low chuckle from Mic.

“Interesting… Well, then?” Mic’s voice was like a croon, low and deep and making Shota look to his radio out of instinct. “Did you get all that, hero?”

Fuck… Present Mic would have been a great hero.

Between 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts 2, there is a brief period of time where Xion is the only active keyblade wielder. Sora is still asleep and Roxas is in data Twilight Town. Since I hold the belief that Xehanort and his iterations, including Xemnas, didn’t forget her due to timey-wimey shenanigans, I would be shocked if Xemnas didn’t want to capture Xion again. Xion has amnesia and she’s recovering from her fight with Roxas-- She’s vulnerable and confused. She has own keyblade now and if Xemnas needed wielder to complete kingdom hearts, then surely she was worth the resources. Then why wasn’t Xion captured?

In my opinion, it was her replicate ability. Xion isn’t that powerful, she’s physically strong and her magic is not to be underestimated, but her replicate ability is what makes her dangerous. Her only limit is one person at a time otherwise she can completely copy someone’s power set. Fighting her is like fighting yourself plus Xion. Thus, Xion can go toe-to-toe with any given Organization member, at least in a duel setting. Anymore could overwhelm her. So, yes, Xemnas and Xigbar together could defeat Xion, and capture her but, she could also manage enough to escape. Once Sora awakened Xemnas likely decided she wasn’t worth the trouble. At least until she started to regain her memories and becomes a thorn in the Organization’s side towards the end of KH2. Then he likely just wanted her dead. 

TWO

Xion’s trauma around Xemnas is complex and difficult. He orchestrated her life in the Organization to manipulate and control her. However, he was remote and they rarely if ever interacted, which is why Saix is far more difficult for Xion to deal with. When Xemnas completed her, it was painful, torturous, violating, and terrifying. He wanted a Sora clone that was obedient and powerful, and that is what Xion would have become. And yet, for all his schemes, plans, and  experiments, he failed. Xion broke the programming and not only survived but Roxas escaped too. So that at the end of 358/2 Days, he had no keyblade wielder at all. She didn’t stop him but I’d argue she tripped him and gave Sora the chance to defeat Xemnas once and for all. For all the pain and torture, Xion survived and she won. 

So after Kingdom Hearts 3 when Xemnas pops back-up, she feel nothings but apathy and pity. As far as she’s concerned? Let him suffer with his brand new heart for the rest of his miserable life. She’s already been vindicated. 

THREE

That said, if Xion ever encountered an injured or exhausted Xemnas you can bet money on her helping him. Xion cannot walk away from someone who is hurt even if they are her enemy, it is not in her nature. She’d be salty about it and stay at arm’s length, but she’d do it. But then on the reverse we have threads where he helps her? I’ll also add that any remote kindness or for lack of better word, affection, from Xemnas baffles Xion. That’s more disturbing than if he was just an asshole to her. 

FOUR

Xion and Xemnas are both curious individuals who are both intellectually motivated. You mentioned once that they both have this tendency to break words down their most simple definitions and I think that’s a sign of wanting to understand. Xion lacks experience and can come off as a little dumb, but she does have an incredible drive to learn. For example she mostly taught herself how to read. If Xion believes he knows something that she wants to know? She will ask and if he’s willing to teach, then she will learn. 

We’ve talked about them playing scrabble, but I can also see them playing chess. With enough practice I’m certain Xion could come to give even Xemnas a challenge. It would be a longer time still before she could beat him, but boy would she try.

Minnie Marvel’s Disney Weeks!!

soooooo later on in the month I’ll be on vacation which means I won’t be posting, but because i like writing I decided to take on a little project for the weeks before to sort of make up for it?? (nothing really to make up for except for myself to make me feel better bc I’ll want to post LOL)

Anyway I guess this will also be sort of like a challenge for me!!! Pick any marvel character you like and mix&match with a disney movie, disney song or disney movie quote and I’ll try my best to come up with a little oneshot!!

Now in order to keep myself from being overwhelmed I’m probably only going to be taking on five of these, so please keep that in mind when putting in a request!! Okay, so I headcanon that Shadow occasionally roams the earth solely to admire its form because he and Maria wished to visit earth when they were on the ark. I feel like he keeps Maria's desire to do so and does so in place of her, frequently imagining her being with him. Prompt: Shadow keeps visiting a particular spot near where Amy visits(or same place) and they gradually start to become close by pure coincidence? Tweak it as you like, I want to see what changes you make to make it better 😊

Been excited to do this one… especially since I’m all about that one-sided Shadamy XD But I’ll work on platonic this time, so no worries ;p

Prompt:

‘It really is beautiful, Maria… You would have liked it.’ Shadow began his normal walk around the lush, grassy plains just outside of City Square. Not only did he despise the city, but he hated the many stares of those who walked by him. Women pulling their children closer, or men giving him wary looks, as if unsure whether to scorn him or simply leave him be.

But this… this route was far from judgment. It was where he could think in peace… a peace he had long since been denied the pleasure of.

The metal on his shoe scrapped against the slightly soggy mud of the greenest grass that waved like ripples on the sea against the earth. Thousands of small hairs… as Shadow tried to describe it.

He would constantly try and figure out ways to describe where he was. As if… she could hear his thoughts.

Where would she like to go? What would she want to know about? The more his thoughts ran wild on the subject, the more quieter the world became… and the greater his melancholy swarmed his chest and left him breathing comfortably still.

He started realizing that he truly didn’t know much about Maria. Though she meant everything to him, he had no clue what earth scenery she enjoyed the most.

He made his way over to a waterfall but paused behind some trees when he noticed something moving under the waterfall’s downhill current.

Becoming cautious, he peered further into the bush and tree-gaps in front of him… until he saw her.

Amy flipped her hair back, letting the water roll down her open-back dress and raise her head up with a smile as the water tilted down her cheeks and washed the muck of the day off of her.

She kicked her feet out and laughed, before hopping out from underneath the waterfall and giggling a moment as she finished shaking herself free of loose droplets.

She jumped from one rock to another, before growing nervous at the rush of warm, summer wind that revealed a shaded figure in front of her. Seeming to hide in the light forest shrubbery and short standing trees, she braced herself.

“Hello?” She readied her hand to summon her hammer, about to take a step forward, her eyes narrowing down. “Show yourself! Or I’ll have to come in after ya!”

“…That won’t be necessary.”

“H-huh?” She was startled by the voice, as she momentarily lifted her foot she was about to let step forward. “S-Shadow!?”

Shadow walked out from his surroundings, moving aside to avoid tree branches and close, brushy bushes. But as he did so, Amy wobbled in her surprised and fell in, splashing up from the waterfall’s pool beneath it.

“You scared me! I was hoping for Sonic!” She spat out some water before staying put where she was, watching him curve around the outside of the edge and look up at the waterfall.

“What are you doing here?” He folded his arms and stared back at her.

“Hmph, I was going to ask you the same thing.” She puffed up a side of her cheek, making a sound of disapproval before shrugging it off. “Ah, well. It’s a free world.” She winked charmingly before swimming over to him.

“Hey! Are you just out and about like I am?” She came up to the edge just behind him, as he looked off and away from her.

“You could say that.”

“So you do love to take in the sights!” her eyes shined at this new found discovery. “I knew you weren’t all bad!”

He frowned, tsk’ing at her naiveness.

Still… her presence could be useful.

“How would you describe this waterfall?” His attention was pulled back to its sparkling cascades of shimmering, babbling life.

“Huh? The waterfall?” Amy blinked her eyes in confusion, lifting her arms up to the water’s edge and then peering over at it’s magnificent, curved, and watery stairwell.

“I’d say… it was like a song.”

Shifting his head a little aways, he seemed very confused and sighed.

He put a hand to his forehead, rubbing it. “That… makes no sense.”

“Hehe! We just see things differently then!” she concluded and got up. “I could also say,” she climbed out of the water and began squeezing the ends of her dress out, flapping them a bit but not too much in front of ‘company’. “It’s rapidly progressing through the many stages of its life.” She looked at its many descending rock formations. “The water is one unit, but… you could also see it as individuals.”

He wasn’t willing to listen to a physiological examination of a waterfall. His eyelids drooped in annoyance at the stupidity of it all.

“The water bends and twists… there’s new paths to follow. And some streams take different routes, but they all end up at the same, looooong fall down to the main pool.” She followed a stream of water until it finally plummeted down.

He was actually surprised he was still paying attention.

“You see? Each path was carved through centuries of some pieces of water deciding on a different course of action. I think that’s wonderful. It’s like all the pieces of a well-developed song. There’s the main lyrical, and then the many instruments on the side.” She glided her eyes down many different avenues the water could take to reach the fall, and then smiled warmly to Shadow.

She placed her hands behind her back and leaned forward a bit, wondering if he was still paying attention. “But if you were Sonic, I would just say it’s a rushing waterfall. He’d get the picture.”

“…Just… a waterfall…” Shadow thought about that, before looking back to her ducking his head down a moment, glaring… “If you were to describe this to a child… would you use the same, figurative speech? Or the condensed version?”

“Hehe, depends on the child.” Amy lightened up from his odd act and decided not to push it further. “What would you say? I bet that’s what really counts.” She blinked over to him, still cheery as ever. “Or does ‘rushing waterfall’ do it for ya, too?” she laughed.

“…No. I would describe it a little more. Remark on the light reflecting or the sounds around it.” He looked around the area, before back at the waterfall. “It’s impressive though… seeing something in so many different ways.” He then gave her a playful look, raising an eyebrow up to make fun of her momentarily. “Do you ever wish it was just a rushing waterfall?”

She stopped laughing with a jolt, before pouting and pursing her lips over at him, hunched after losing some of her confidence for a moment. “That seems harsh.” She then looked away and her shoulders bounced in glee. “Nah… I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

As she looked off, Shadow watched the wind pull some more of her wet hair over her shoulders… before she turned slowly back to him, looking more genuine and purer than before. “I love looking at something… with fresh, new eyes every time.” She beamed, almost like the crashing of the waterfall, she had spun around with the same, gentle velocity it had taken.

His eyes widened slightly.

“I love looking at something again and again! Till I can fully grasp what it means…”

“What it.. means?” he seemed confused but intrigued. “What meaning?”

“No,” she giggled, shaking her head out and spreading her arms to her sides, “I mean… Life.” She began to wander a bit off, kicking out her feet and following after the motion with her eyes. “I guess I’m just a kid in that regard too.” she gave him one last smile, before taking off.

Accidentally, they kept meeting like that. And every time, Shadow learned a new way to describe what he was looking at.

He thought Maria would like Amy. Her unique outlook on life and the things pertaining to it was something anyone could sit and listen too. Marvel at even. If they gave her enough credit and time to talk it out, that is.

Soon, even Shadow was laughing. And once Amy got him opening up about things, she wouldn’t let him close himself off again.

She would walk with him and describe things around her like clouds are like bunnies, women are oceans and men are wildfires, and lastly…

“Shadows… I think shadows haunt where light can’t touch.”

He stopped then.

“Hmm?” she turned around, used to him brooding to himself for long periods of time, just thinking to himself, but it annoyed her greatly to feel left out of the conversation or moment.

She pouted, slightly turning her head to advance on but keeping her eyes looking over her shoulder at him.

They were up on a narrow hill, and she was doing her best to keep her balance, finding it all a game when-

She started to balance with her arms out again and look down at her feet, humming when he remained looking down until the sun covered his eyes.

“Amy… I think… Shadows are longing for where the light does touch.”

She stopped, pulling her arms back in and slowly looking back in a bit of guilt.

“…Shadows can get lonely sometimes… when they’re without.” She held the back of her hand and pulled them close to her chest, thinking… “But… I think memories are meant to be made and discovered… not just remembered and forgotten.”

“What if Shadows are the forgotten memories?” he seemed to be getting a little defensive, but there was a quiet sorrow there…

“No.” she turned around, her eyes full of compassion for his words. She shook her head, “No, no, no. That’s not true! And you know it’s not.” She slightly stomped her foot down. “Shadow… There are more people out there that need you to shade them from the harsh sunlight that constantly burns their suntans!” She flopped her arms down by her sides, as he looked up with squinted eyes, utterly confused again.

“…What?” he dropped another eyebrow down and rose the other, attempting to hear her out on this one… as he did all her odd explanations to things.

She held herself a second, before turning to look at the setting sun again.

His eyes were viewable again, so she smiled, lowering her head to fiddle a moment with twisting her toe into the grassy hillside… before closing her eyes and giggling again.

“It can be really hot sometimes. And people do need to cool off… but I don’t know how to relate that to you…” she opened them to sweetly address him again. “I… Think I may be at a loss of words… but I do know this. You’re a constant, Shadow. You never leave someone’s side. You engulf them when they feel alone in the dark. And when harsh lights are drawn on them, you support and hold them up from the back. You never fully dwindle away. You are always a friend. Always watching with the will to help. I believe that much is true.” She nodded.

There was an uncomfortable moment of silence…

Before Shadow chuckled.

“Haha…hahaha!” he actually swung his head about himself a bit, before placing a tender hand on his stomach. “Hahaha….Hahaha! A loss of words, you say?”

Suddenly, Amy was full out laughing too.

Their laughter carried across the wind and open plains… until Shadow stopped a moment to look back at her.

‘Maria…’

As the sun set, Amy’s laughing figure began to slowly fade away.

‘Amy is like her namesake. A rose. Red for passion, and gentle with a will for life. A desire to live it to it’s fullest. She pulls all into her beautiful way of seeing things. She’s not afraid… of darkness… or the light… I can only describe her as… well,… thriving.”
