Idk how I ever thought the LY trilogy was about romantic love. It seems so obvious now that I'm reading the lyrics from a different perspective that it's about the pressures of fame, identity, and their relationship with the fans and each other.

Today “Dom Bohuna / Дім Богуна” celebrates its 4th anniversary

Perhaps, it is a proper moment for some summing-up reflections. I admit that I have created this blog 15.04.2020 only for fun. It was during the COVID-pandemic times, I was closed at home, recovering from a long illness. In such circumstances, some people return to their childhood fairy-tales. So I have returned to Bohun and “Ogniem i mieczem”. I was searching on the Internet for all possible groups of H. Sienkiewicz’s “Trilogy” fans, just to make friends with them, and I have found such a group here, on Tumblr and at the same time – some breathtakingly beautiful English stories about Helena, Jurko & Jan on AO3. For me, as a non-heterosexual person, their greatest value (for which I will be eternally grateful to their Authors!) was adding to my beloved “Trilogy” universe the motif of same-sex love and relationship. I wanted to contribute to it, so I have created my own Tumblr blog and an account on AO3, where I have published some from my own stories.

To be honest, the encounter with the Western “Ogniem i mieczem” fandom, seeing, how some people there perceive “Trilogy” characters, was a VERY shocking experience for me. One of these events, that are leaving you for years with a question circulating in your mind: “WHY??? What is wrong with this content, that people react to it (and to you, its admirer) in SUCH a way?” It is obvious, that H. Sienkiewicz’ “Trilogy”, created in the 19th century and telling about the historical events in the Eastern Europe from the mid-17th century, for contemporary readers can be in many aspects at least problematic (or difficult to accept). In general, it shouldn’t be, it can’t be taken uncritically now. But on the other side, it is not something worthless. Or “dirty”. Its characters (in their majority based on the real people from the past) can commit deeds viewed now as crimes, but they are still HUMANS. What is more, H. Sienkiewicz’ “Trilogy” is part of many people’s cultural heritage, entangled with countless events, heroes, myths, motifs from the Polish history (and in its first part, “Ogniem i mieczem” – also from the Ukrainian history). It is a part of MY OWN heritage and history. And I have felt uncomfortable with a thought, that in such an international community with a world-wide scope like Tumblr, someone, not having any basic knowledge about my culture/s, can think that this heritage is a “sluttish trash”. It is a reason why my blog has become “Dom Bohuna”, “Bohun’s Home”. I believe that the best way to solve such misunderstandings is spreading Knowledge and telling the Truth, so I try to show Bohun in his “natural environment”, on the one side: within H. Sienkiewicz’s “Trilogy” universe (with diverse masterpieces from the Polish culture related to it), on the other: within the Ukrainian tradition of Cossack Heroes (with various treasures of the Ukrainian culture related to it), with the Polish Romantic Cossack myth somewhere between them. I know that for a Western eye, they are all rather “distant islands”, but many parts of them are really worthy to have a closer look.

The next turning point was the February 2022. Here, no further explanation is required, I think. It was a time, when the whole our World has changed unimaginably and abruptly. And in these new circumstances, I realized one day, that I had a blog thematically related not only to the Polish literature/culture, but above all – to the Ukrainian Cossack Hero. I am deeply grateful to all my Ukrainian and Polish Friends for encouraging me to put here more content about the real Bohun and the history of the Cossack State (Hetmanate). You have given me courage. Because I hesitated, for two reasons. First: I know that I don’t have such in-depth knowledge about the Ukrainian culture, I have about the Polish one (so I can always make some hurtful mistakes). Second: I think that my blog, created for fun/fandom reasons, is not an entirely proper place for such an important content. But after all: it is a place, where one can just talk about the Ukrainian cultural heritage and turn some people's attention to it. That is why I try, as much as my limited skills and knowledge let me, to sing here about the Ukrainian Cossacks Glory. Just as Bohun himself used to do a long time ago.

Ok that's a tricky topic of conversation. Read more because as always i cannot shut up.

H3h3 and iddubz don't really mean anything to me outside of their old filthy frank collabs. I actually actively dislike them. Yeah you read that right. Thats why ive tried to make the fact that i am NOT running a cancer crew blog here clear. I just hate iddubz's old solo content. Seeing him beat himself up online nowadays isn't great either but by god his old stuff is so so bad (to me). Internet drama and borderline hate speech is a recipe for disaster and if he was smarter he would have seen this coming. I understand that some people like his older stuff out of nostalgia but i am not affected by this. I was not into YouTube back then. Im still not into YouTube. I only know of him and h3h3 because im obsessed with their old homie. My perspective is different, these people barely mean anything to me.

Ok now, disclaimers aside. Ethan said that joji told him not to call him filthy frank when he was talking about his music and he personally interpreted that as him being embarrassed of his past. Personally its just clear to me that what joji was asking for when he was taking his first steps as a full time music artist was space. Being known as an ex youtuber can kill someones career and considering the sort of content he was making as ff it just doesn't seem weird to me that he wanted to separate the two lol. He gave countless interviews where he mentioned his old content and that he understood why people found it so hard to move on from such an iconic character but that he didn't like conflating the two. And even then, a few years later he was encouraging fans at his concerts to chant filthy frank so i cant help but feel like Ethan's assumption that he is embarrassed and trying to forget it ever happened is baseless and biased. And after that....well. Its pretty clear to me that h3h3 used to be enjoyed by people but its had a pretty obvious dowfall since then. Idc about Ethan's drama (or the man himself for that matter) but to be completely honest i wouldn't keep in contact with him either. Idk if you are one of those people who still enjoy his podcast but to me and to many others it just seems bad. Real bad. A lot of drama and too little substance.

Now Ian...Ian is definitely less clear to me as an outside observer. I may not like ~the old iddubz~ but joji obviously didn't have a problem with him. They always seemed to get along pretty well on all the behind the scenes and going through the cake trilogy together probably means that they developed something similar to a warriors bond. He was fun on their collabs. But alas, sometimes people who used to be close just stop keeping in touch. A lot of Joji's old college friends (pookie/david, the shaman/lewys, wheelz/tyrell) are no longer in contact with him and yet they all speak of him very highly. People online like to act like he somehow ""betrays his roots"" by not keeping up with people he collaborated with on youtube back in the day but youtube isn't his roots lmao. His high school and middle school japan friends have always clearly been very important to him and he never fell out off touch with them. He is often touring alongside Rei Brown and he has mentioned in interviews that he relies on these friendships on his day to day life (admittedly the interview im talking about was from 2018 but there's no reason to assume that he has suddenly stopped talking to people that he has been friends with since he was like 12 years old). At the end of the day he doesn't owe people online to keep in contact with anyone. People grow up and change and not all relationships survive the test of time. And thats okay. Stuff happens, people move on. For what its worth tho, i feel like iddubz's drama driven channel (because lets be fair the content cops were his biggest thing and they were youtube drama no matter how self righteous or fair they seemed at the time) didn't help. The thing about joji is that he had always avoided internet drama like it was the plague, which is once again one of those things that i appreciate deeply about him. I hate internet drama. But even my kinda biased opinion aside, the reality of the situation is probably very simple. They are both grown adults who live very different lives. They hanged out together during a few summers a lot of years ago. They followed different paths in life. It happens. Joji has been very offline for years now and i get the impression that he tends to isolate himself when his health acts up so its probably not that hard to fall out of touch with him.

And last but not least....Max. I won't lie, out of the cancer crew the only other person i actually like besides my man Joji is Max. Maybe he really was closer with Max, i certainly find him more likable. Around 2018 both Joji on twitter and Max on that one cold ones podcast episode said that they still keep in touch. Max was replying to a lot of Joji's tweets up untill the nectar era but once again, at the end of the day they live in different countries. I obviously have no way of knowing if they were still as close as they used to in the following years. Maybe they grew more distant for a while, maybe they reconnected around 2023 when joji took chad and max backstage at his concert, and then of course the wedding !! Its all very sweet, the gimme love Max and Chad video from the concert lowkey made me tear up.

But once again, at the end of the day they are all living their own lives, doing their own thing. And people who act like they owe it to them to be each others everything forever and ever because they met online a decade ago and collaborated on some extremely iconic videos make me laugh.

Last book I read: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley! Really good, I read it on the beach a while back—currently forcing my way thru Moby Dick by Herman Melville. Why do I always read books about being miserable in the cold while on the beach.

Fun fact: 🇨🇱🇨🇦‼️ I collect cool looking coins and dragon figures/statues! I've been interested in medieval armour and weaponry since I was like eight or younger. I was a chess team nerd before I eventually upgraded to Fire Emblem. I like 3D modelling and animation when I'm not doin 2D art and have old models of my own chars lying around somewhere.

HALLOWEEN ENDS- 2022 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The final part of David Gordon Green's Halloween trilogy.....

As a die hard Halloween fan i had a lot of ideas going into this movie as to what would happen. I genuinely cant remember the last time i was this suprised by the direction a movie took.

I also cant remember the last time i watched a movie and couldnt decide exactly how i felt about it. There are bits i loved and bits i didnt agree with at all. Its rated 5 stars for enjoyment not 5 saying its a 5 star movie. As a die hard halloween fan its hard to see a new one on the big screen and not have a blast...

Ill start with the parts i liked or loved:

Giving us the Halloween 3: Season of the witch blue font was very cool. The start of this movie i really loved. The haddonfield radio station and the song playing set a fun tone.

The opening scene itself with Corey and the little boy i thought was really good. I was ofcourse expecting Michael to have been in the house, interesting misdirection. Enjoyed them watching "The Thing".

Loved watching Halloween Ends and not knowing what would happen next.

The film introduces a lot of new ideas, some of them are extremely ambitious and i appreciate that. I get there are some fans that wanted a more conventional Halloween film. But we have those already. This is now the 13th Halloween film. To me, part of what makes this franchise so much fun is that a lot of the movies are so different and go in crazy directions. Even some of the ones that i thought were whack after first watching (Rob Zombies Halloween) i have come to love in there own way and will enjoy an occasional rewatch of.

Alyson and Coreys relationship was pretty interesting. Love Alyson. Andy Matichak was great as her and would love her to reprise the role one day. Corey and Alyson having a sort of doomed love story where they teased running away together was really intriguing and not something weve seen before in Halloween.

There were plenty of good kills in this film (not many by Michael but we'll get to that).

The parts of the ending that i did like were:

Laurie faking suicide to trick Corey.

Corey actually killing himself to frame Laurie.

Liked Laurie and Hawkes flirting in supermarket at start of the movie.

Liked Laurie looking at the photo of her Lynda and Annie from 78.

Michaels body being destroyed in a meat grinder was the most definitive death he has had in any of these movies and i liked that.

The closing shots where it revisited the houses where the killings had happened (like in previous movies) except this time you dont hear Michael breathing, then dont fear the reaper plays.... i loved that whole sequence it was great.

This film really expands Haddonfield a lot....

It feels like a much bigger and more layered place now. In Halloween Ends its almost portrayed as being like Derry in Stephen King books. Like the place holds evil and turns people evil. Did they stick the landing with this idea? No i wouldnt say so but again i like they trying new things.

Now something i didnt like:

CoreyMania.

Corey is essentially the main character i believe he gets more screen time than anyone. I liked a lot of it but thought it would have been better if he had been part of the previous two movies. Im not a fan of when a trilogy waits til the last movie to set up something this big. Like waiting til the rise of skywalker to set up Palpatine wtf.

The moment where Corey looks in Michaels eyes and there seems to be some kind of transference.....

That came out of nowhere and didnt seem believable to me in line with the previous movies have established. Seemed wrong to me that Michael wouldnt have killed him. Them teaming up absolutely shocked me. I would never in a million years have guessed this.

The idea itself isnt that crazy. We nearly had Jamie Lloyd become the protege killer but they turned her into a deaf mute instead. Seeing Michael team up with someone was very interesting but while watching it i was just in shock. Think this will be less jarring in future viewings.

One of my biggest problems with the film and now the trilogy at whole is there handling of Michael Myers....

Theyre description of him is constantly changing back and forth and it gets ridiculous.

Halloween 2018 ignores the unkillable supernatural Myers of the previous now non canon sequels and firmly establishes him as a human man.

Halloween Kills establishes him as now more than human. By killing he transcends and gets stronger. The film ends with him appearing dead after taking considerably more damage than any person could. He then pops up and kills a huge mob of people.

Halloween Ends he is a man again. An old and weak old man living in the sewers. They also establish that killing heals him. Why wasnt he healed after killing the mob? Or after killing people in the film?

The constant changing of Myers strength and ability is bizarre and frustrating.

The scene where Corey takes Myers mask off his face was awful. You cant do that. It felt like a modern day Busta Rhymes moment. Now sure Myers got the last laugh but this was one of many moments that made Myers by far the least scary he has been in any of the Blumhouse trilogy. And theyre his fucking movies!

Myers doesnt show up for at least 40 mins in this movie and has little screen time. Again this would have worked better if part of a spin off and not the last part of his trilogy.

The handling of Myers relationship with Laurie is also puzzling.

Although some people say otherwise, these movies to me, seem to be saying Laurie isnt important to Michael. They started in the first one by changing it so they were no longer brother and sister. Im fine with that but think they then take it too far.

In 2018 Halloween, Michael doesnt seek out Laurie, he is killing aimlessly and is brought to her house by others.

In Halloween Kills he doesn't go looking for her.

In Halloween Ends, the final fight only happens because he goes there to get his mask back from Corey. The final fight which most of the movies marketing is based around just wasnt good enough. By the time it finally happened it felt obligatory and lacking importance because its unclear how much Michael even cares about Laurie anymore.

Some major problems with the presentation of Laurie also.

First of all she seems to have gone at least slightly mental which i understand due to what shes gone through. But a lot of the time i dont see this version of Laurie as being even remotely the same person as we first met in 1978.

Dont even see her as being the same person as in the previous two films? I think 2018 Laurie was the best version of her from the new trilogy.

The whole explanatation that she is now living her life free of fear. That she lives in a regular house not set up with traps is insane. The only reason she survived 2018 was because of how prepared she was. She knows that and knows Myers is still out there? After he killed Karen she would want revenge now more than ever and would have bought bigger and better traps. Shes literally an old woman at this point. So when she just straught up beats Myers in a fight at the end i was disappointed. At this point Myers is a shell of himself but still.

What the fucking hell was this all about?

I was shook!

Halloween Ends was a very surprising film. Despite having lots i disliked i havent been able to stop thinking about it and cant wait to watch it again. David Gordon Green must have for sure known this film would be divisive. But he made the film he wanted to make and i applaud that. And if you dont like it then its fine because before long, someone else will come along and make a different version of it.

MCU plot points you would do differently?

Oooh, thanks for the interesting thought. There's a lot I wish I could change and this could go on for ages, so I might just pick character beats. (I’m not going to touch Endgame because that’s an essay by itself)

As someone who got into MCU because of Tony, I wish they actually built upon his growth in the IM movies. The theme of his movies was this guy who had so much material possessions but so little human connection, and it was about him finding the humanity that he had previously scoffed at. The Avengers could have filled Tony's void of human relationships. Instead of idolising Tony in the Avengers movies, I wish his growth continued there: that he noticed his own arrogance and anxieties were pushing people away, and that it wasn't what he wanted. I wish he learned to make real friends, not people he used when he needed them and abused when they didn't meet his expectations. This way, when it came to Civil War, it would have had more impact and meaning. And to me...that would have been the happy ending for Tony, having a found family outside of Pepper, having healthy relationships and not pathological dependence.

As for Civil War, I don't mind the concept, but it should have been a separate Avengers movie and not a Captain America film. Cap’s trilogy should have finished Steve's own arc, fleshed out Sam in the third movie in preparation for taking over the mantle - and preferably, do the handover of the shield there rather than shoehorned in at Endgame. I...actually wouldn't have minded if they retired both Steve and Bucky at the same time. At this point I just want Sebastian to have his wish of seeing Bucky die at 200 years of age surrounded by his loving family.

The other thing is I wish Peter Parker stayed true to his roots. I admit I thought their dynamic was cute when I saw it, but I realised that’s because I saw it from a Tony fan point of view. MCU!Parker was basically constructed around Tony, and probably would have been whipped senseless (or back into his senses?) by any other iteration of Spidey. The way Tony treats Peter, while unhealthy, is in character and I don’t mind that aspect. What would have been a fantastic exploration is to have Peter call Tony out on his BS. You think Peter hasn’t walked past the Stark tower, like Steve did in Avengers, and thought about his aunt and uncle scraping together a living to accommodate him? You think he hasn’t labelled the tower with every phallic euphemism under the sun as a monument to its owner’s dickishness? The truth is, the Queens kid would never have idolised the guy with his own tower in Manhattan. MCU thinks being a teen is about being clumsy and infatuated, which…sure, but have they never met a teen at the height of righteous scorn and fierce justice? That would have been a sight to see and far more realistic. Now, making Tony successfully build a relationship off that would have done far more for his growth and integrity than whatever the MCU saddled him with.

I see a trend of directors/writers coming onto an established franchise and, instead of building upon what's there, think the best way to leave a lasting personal mark is to take apart what had been built before. So the Avengers, as a concept, never gelled because so much of the time their newly built fragile bond was taken apart for a fresh conflict. It made you wonder why they put up with each other’s antics at all.

Shadow and Bone Trilogy Book Review

Long, rambling, sometimes-capslock thoughts on the Shadow and Bone trilogy, having just a couple of hours ago finished reading the trilogy of Shadow and Bone, Seige and Storm and Ruin and Rising.

Fair warning: Major spoilers for the whole series and ending, entire focus on Mal/Alina 😅 I apologise for nothing.

I THINK THIS MIGHT BE THE FIRST TIME I’VE EXPERIENCED A SHIP I REALLY LOVE HAVE A HAPPY ENDING. Hooooooly shit. It feels good.

Leigh Bardugo really served up everything I want to see! Give me all the tropes! All the angst! All the longing! AND with a happy ending?! *chef’s kiss*

I’m shook.

It feels amazing that for once in my life, something I ship has finally finished front and centre and I am absolutely here for it!

So let’s first clarify that I went in to the books just after finishing S1 of the Netflix show, already head over heels in love with Mal/Alina and rooting for them the whole way through. They are the reason I read the books. In the stories that I enjoy, I value love above all other aspects of the story; it’s just who I am.

The Pain of Siege and Storm

I admit, about 50% of this trilogy and the majority of Book 2 and early Book 3 was me in pain just wondering why they couldn’t be together and why they kept pushing each other away. Book 2 was an emotional rollercoaster ngl. I was frustrated that they spent so much time being miserable around eachother but were never allowed to be happy or give in to their feelings? They are best friends. Mal wants to support her. LET HIM SUPPORT HER. Let her confide in him and find comfort in him.

Endgame? Not Endgame?

This went on in a similar vein for some time and towards the end of Book 3, I was getting increasingly worried they weren’t endgame and this was indeed all leading up to Mal ultimately sacrificing himself... which obviously did happen...

But when Alina says “Bring him back to me.”, I just thought “THANK YOU. VINDICATION. THIS IS WHAT HAPPINESS FEELS LIKE.” and I knew we were home and dry and my god it felt good.

But I was so happy with the ending. It’s exactly what I wanted to happen, though I didn’t expect it... AND THEN IT HAPPENED. For them to go back to how they were and live the rest of their days in quiet happiness. Neither of them asked for this. They just belonged with eachother.

The last line of the book:

They had an ordinary life, full of ordinary things - if love can ever be called that.

HAPPY SIGH. YES.

People hate Mal?!?

I... don’t understand why so many fans apparently don’t like Mal. ?!?!????!? I had heard this before reading and went in to the books with trepidation. I was waiting for him to do something awful to justify the hate and... it just never happened. Is it just the way he behaves in Siege and Storm? Because I do accept he is slightly more problematic in the books than the show but Y’ALL KNOW HE WAS ONLY IN THAT PIT OF DESPAIR BECAUSE HE FELT LIKE HE WAS LOSING HER. She never really reassured him that much, if anything she confirmed his fears (from his pov anyway). And he was right to doubt her, because she was doubting her feelings too in secret, and he could feel it.

BUT. But he accepts it in Ruin and Rising. He grows into it. He accepts they can’t be together as they are. And he still stays, only to protect her, to keep her safe. He never asks for more than that. “You are my flag. You are my nation.” Roast me over a slow fire.

You will never, ever convince me not to root for the childhood best friend who loves her unconditionally and knows her better than anyone else and will die for her and will spend the rest of his days just being close to her, to protect her, even if that’s all he ever gets. This is the hill I will die on.

And then she comes back to him. 🤧🤧🤧

The Love Square

So, in terms of love interests for Alina:

Mal >>> Nikolai >>>>>>>>>>>>> Darkling

Wasn’t a fan of the love square here. I understand if she has feelings for different people, I respect everyone’s right to ship what they want, but I honestly had whiplash. One second she’s “in physical pain” missing Mal, next she is “drawn to” the Darkling, then wants to kiss Nikolai. I’m extremely monogamous and that’s probably why all this chopping and changing just felt really jarring to me.

I liked Nikolai as a character but I valued their friendship and I just wanted their relationship to remain platonic. I’m happy with how his storyline ended too. I hope he’s okay!

Mainly I did not understand why she was still drawn to the Darkling after all the loved ones he slaughtered in front of her. Fuck him, honestly (Ben Barnes I still love you though).

But this line near the end kind of summed it up for me, I guess:

Merzost. Darkness. You could hate it and hunger for it at the same time.

But I no longer care about any of this because my ship was endgame, baby! 😭😭😭

The Finale

I am glad Mal become more “important” in the end. That there was a magical bond between them. (I feel a little dumb I didn’t see it coming that he was an amplifier, because I did clock on to the jolts of light that happened when he grabbed her wrist and thought it was foreshadowing something).

I like even more that they agreed they would have found each other despite it.

“Maybe that brought us together, but it didn’t make us who we are. It didn’t make you the girl who could get me to laugh when I had nothing. It sure as hell didn’t make me the idiot that took that for granted. Whatever there is between us, we forged it. It belongs to us."

I was waiting for the scene in the conservatory the entire time and it was so perfect! Worth the wait! I can’t wait to see the aesthetics of it in the show. The flowers, the greenery... the lanterns. It was so pretty in my head!

I could pretend I wasn’t a saviour or a Saint, that I could simply choose him, have a life, be in love. That we wouldn’t have one night, we would have thousands.

It was a perfect ending for me really because I got both the angsty hero-sacrifices-himself-for-protagonist-and-greater-good scene AND the happy ending. I’ve honestly been spoilt 😂 My shipper heart has never been so satisfied.

The actual plot of the ending was a complete blur and I have no idea what happened other than Alina lost her power and the Darkling died and... some other people became light summoners? I think? I was so focused on whether Mal would live or not I couldn’t really process the rest! I will have to reread.

It’s a shame that Alina no longer has her power and that Mal lost some of his tracking skill in the end, but... I’ll take it for a happy ending where they spend the rest of their lives together as equals. It’s not like Mal stole her power from her. They both made sacrifices and in the end, they still won.

The shrieks of the volcra erupted around me as the Fold began to unravel. It was a miracle. And I didn’t care. The Saints could keep their miracles. The Grisha could keep their long lives and their lessons. Mal was dead.

I love that most of the book is all about her feeling the pull of her powers, feeling changed by it, drifting from Mal… but in the end, when it’s all done and over, she doesn’t care. She wants none of it. She chooses him. She wants him back. This is what I was waiting the whole series to read, honestly. Love conquers all, baby.

I just love that there were all these passages about their love not being possible because “they weren’t the same people any more” and the boy and girl from the orphanage were gone... and yet, it ends with the boy and the girl at the orphanage. Just like how it started. It's so obvious to me now that the whole story was about THE BOY AND THE GIRL. Every Before and After. It was right there all along.

well... I've been in few relationships and i can actually say that i learned a lot from them.

Rules? Yeah sure:

Rule 1: Don't throw yourself in spines if a relationship doesn't work, just leave.

Rule 2: If you re a lovely person and a kind one, make sure to do anything you can for your girl/boy.

Rule 3: Love and trust each other and don't you fucking lie one to another.

I came to the conclusion were if you re exposed to being loved by somebody, you have to put yourself together if you don't want to fall LIKE I DID.

guess that's a lesson learned , so in my case i'm going to die alone because i'm not a beautiful person even if i'm kind.

What other topics and sounds do you explore on the album?

There’s a little bit more emotional stuff. In general, I’m just wearing my heart on my sleeve, and being honest, reflecting on a breakup. As a lyricist, I always try to be as honest as possible. Once fans have heard the album, they will see a slightly different side of me.

The entire album tells the story of a break up... that is the simplest, most cohesive explanation for the album. And he always says his lyrics are “honest”. The music video trilogy tells a story of being put in a bad situation and trying to find a way out. He shows himself on a target for the music video for Walls. I’m not sure what else he’s supposed to do or say for people to listen. 

In fact, if you look at the songs Louis has written on in 1D and follow the story to Walls (the album) and now Copy - it’s tells a story of falling in love, being ready to risk it all, finding strength in his partner, wanting to be loved by them... and then having risked it all, he still just wants to be loved but now he’s lost and alone. 

They’re also truly missing out on the pure beauty of Copy if they’re looking at in a strictly one-dimensional “it’s about his closet” approach. 

Also if you really want to get into it, Harry’s albums are also about break ups. Three break up albums... but Harry and Louis are still in the world’s most loving and healthy relationship.

my thoughts on the crank palace

i touched about this a bit on twitter (@newtedison_) but i figured i would Try and touch on my points more here (spoilers obv) again, its sort of lengthy

1. im gonna start with talking about the ending because i need to get it out of the way. either i havent read the books in a while and i forgot some canon (which could very well be true, i literally forgot that Bliss was a thing) or this ending makes no sense and is (somehow) setting up for a tdc sequel? so first off, newt was shot in the Head with a Bullet and somehow didnt immediately die? i know that that can happen in real life but it just seems so unlikely that not only would he not die, but he would survive long enough for someone from WCKD to transport him back to their labs and try to revive him. and who the fuck was he talking to? did thomas get newt’s journal at some point and i just dont remember? like i said, either im forgetting stuff or this ending doesnt make sense and is setting up a sequel which...i’ll get to later

2. why was this written? like, what was the point? i understand that this wasnt going to be all sunshine and rainbows but i feel like i was reading torture porn. like, literally all that happens is newt gets tortured (which is described in detail) by WCKD soldiers, has bouts of insane-fueled rage where he KILLS MULTIPLE PEOPLE, and then he dies. ??? what did this contribute to the canon? what was this trying to accomplish? truthfully, i never really wanted a newt-POV...well, anything except for maybe those little nuggets he wrote some time ago. but even if i HAD wanted a newt-POV novella, this is not what i would have wanted. he KNOWS that newt is almost universally the most loved character in this franchise. you can tell because he constantly uses him as a way to get fans in his good graces again. so why on earth would he take that character that so many people love and write a novella where its torture porn and a descent into madness before death? i am not interested in that At All. i’ve read fics (and even written a drabble) where newt is a Crank, and those were more respectful and easier to read than tcp. the parts where newt is having bouts of the Flare were literally exhausting to read; it was described in such vivid and torturous detail that it made me sick reading it. and it didnt help that newt is a character i care a lot about. i didn’t need to know what becoming a Crank felt like. the way it was described in the other books (and even the movies) told me everything i needed to know. the way thomas and everyone found newt at the crank palace in tdc and hes described as obviously not well, but not knowing what exactly happened to him...thats good enough on its own. the mystery of what exactly newt had to endure is part of what gives his journey more emotional depth. not everything needs to be written out and explained. not every gap needs to be filled in. 

3. me saying “the characterization felt off” is going to make some people roll their eyes because ‘duh, sami, the characterization will be off because he’s going insane’ to which i say...exactly. we weren’t really reading a newt-POV novella, were we? even if he isn’t past the Gone in the beginning, hes clearly not the same person we knew him as. the whole novella felt like an uncanny valley situation; i knew i was supposed to be reading about newt, but it felt like i was reading about someone else who looked like him. and that is part of what made this such a disconnect and made me lose interest at parts. not only that, but the world building and lore is inconsistent. newt makes a comment about how it used to rain in the glade, and apparently (as ive been told) that is simply not true. keisha having somehow working cell phone that magically connects her to her family also doesnt make sense. how would they have each others’ numbers? what are the odds that they BOTH found working cell phones in an apocalypse? i get that its a novella but you cant just throw something that crazy in there as a plot convenience. actually work on your plot and world building in a cohesive way, please. and another thing that doesnt make sense...

4. ...is newt finding out that sonya is his sister. if there was anything i would have wanted from a newt-pov novella, it would have been this. him finding out that not only is sonya his sister, but he already knows her post-WCKD. something that would have made this novella actually captivating, contributing something worthwhile to the canon that i would actually want to read, is if newt found out while in the crank palace that sonya was his sister; the Flare would remove that part of the Slice in his brain, and he would realize it was her. then, knowing that he couldnt go past the Gone before seeing her, he would try to find a way to get back to her. he could learn this after thomas and everyone originally see him, so it could match up with the canon. and then, by the time 250 comes along, hes lost all hope of that actually happening, and lashes out to thomas in a fit of rage. the journey of him trying to find his ACTUAL sister would have meant more to me than the story of keisha and dante. trust me, i love a found family trope as much as the next girl. but this series is FULL of the found family trope. it pretty much is the backbone of the franchise. so to see a blood family dynamic would have been a refreshing change of pace that i actually would have been interested in reading. also, the way that newt DOES find out about sonya is...underwhelming. he just randomly says “you remind me of my sister, sonya” to keisha in the WCKD truck. first of all, sonya is not the name you would actually know her by. you would know her by her birth name (which is lizzy? elizabeth?). second, why does he act like he didnt already meet her in the series? when the WCKD doctor tells him sonya is his sister and is alive, hes so surprised. wouldn’t he have known that already? why is there not more emphasis on the fact he already met her? that would have been a really interesting dynamic to explore, and im sad they didnt

5. the pacing and dialogue of tcp is so dragged out. i remember specifically there was a section where newt goes to talk to keisha after she starts abandoning dante, and i swear to god there was a page and a half of text before anything ACTUALLY happened or anyone ACTUALLY said anything. dashner described a launcher at one point as “the energy dependent electric firing projectile device.” that’s SIX words to describe a stun gun. a fucking stun gun! we know what it is! why did you have to use six words??? it just felt like everything was dragged and stretched to the longest it could possibly be and it added to the exhaustion i felt while reading it

6. okay i cant end it without talking about newtmas. its very obvious by now that newtmas is a VERY large part of this fanbase. its clearly the most popular ship and what keeps a lot of people interested in this series. even the marketing team for the MOVIES used newtmas as a advertising tactic (i.e.; using thomas and newt standing face to face as a thumbnail for the trailer, emphasizing newtmas based questions in interviews, even making a fucking facebook memories video for them. yes that last one is real). not only does dashner use newt as a way to lure fans in; he also uses newtmas. the parts that were sprinkled into this were so obvious that it didnt feel authentic. i cant speak for the original trilogy; i dont know the culture around ships back then, and i dont know how much it influenced his writing at the time. but the scenes in those books felt more genuine than tcp. by genuine i mean; he wrote scenes without a relationship in mind, but the chemistry had noticeable subtext that, while unintentional, was largely agreed upon by the larger audience. the parts of newtmas he added into tcp felt artificial and forced, likely as a way for people to take snippets of and use as a free marketing tool for him. one example you might have already seen; “he had already gotten used to his post-thomas, post-WCKD life.” the fact that dashner SPECIFICALLY used the phrase “post-thomas” rather than “post-his friends” or something similar shows that he is using newtmas as a hook on purpose. not only that, but to make newt’s last thoughts as he died “tommy. tommy will understand...” is...wow. first of all, i never wanted to know what newt’s dying thoughts were, but thanks, i guess? and second, when we all initially thought newt died underneath thomas with a gun to his head, i was pretty much inferred that newts last thoughts would probably be about thomas; they would sort of have to be, given the circumstances. so adding that in gives me the same feeling that “i’m coming for you, newt” at the end of the fever code gave me. not as offensive, but written very much on purpose. and the ending is implying that there will somehow be a sequel where thomas gets newt’s journal from...someone. at this point, i can only think that this sequel will retroactively make newtmas canon somehow. now that newt has been confirmed as gay, it could happen. which brings me to my last point...

7. hearing dashner confirm newt is gay was already mind-boggling before. now that i’ve read the crank palace...im angry. im very angry. i think its safe to say that newt is the character that suffers the most in this series. you can argue with me but hes definitely high on the list, if not #1. so; you take this character. you give him a horribly sad arc in the original trilogy, then decide to expand upon it and tell us, your largely QUEER fanbase, exactly how painful and torturous his last days were, in detail. and then you tell us he’s gay. something that is never mentioned in the canon, only in an offhanded reply to a tweet of someone calling you out. on a base level, i can understand why people would be happy. representation (i guess), seeing themselves in the character, having their headcanons be confirmed. great. but what i see is you telling your largely queer fanbase “hey, you see the only confirmed gay character? im going to literally write torture porn about him before killing him off and offer it to you like im providing a service to your community.” how fucked up is that? “hey, kids, if youre gay, you WILL be violently tortured and become violent and a danger to the ones you love. then you will die and your love will never be reciprocated.” what a message! and if he DOES end up retroactively making newtmas “canon” in some weird sequel...i will start foaming at the mouth. THIS is an example of how not all queer representation is good or genuine.

i wanna preface this by saying im a fan of bucky but christ bucky is the manic pixie dream 2015 wattpad self insert protagonist type character of the mcu cap fandom and i 100% think its bc hes a hot white cis man who's enough of a blank slate for ppl to both obsessively over analyze every little moment he's in and to fill in all the blanks with whatever they want. im not bashing anyone or saying its necessarily wrong to have a blank slate but i wish ppl would just. calm down abt him a bit lmao

(also as a continuation of the bucky anon i just wanna say that this is like something ive noticed over years of being in the stevebucky fandom with how many ppl esp in fic and stuff just make steve play second fiddle in his own relationship and either dumb him down and mischaracterize him so bucky can be the Smartest Best Special Boy or make him an all forgiving saint with no needs or desires so he can be bucky's crutch)

oh my god that last bit about mischaracterizing steve and bucky being a saint sdfks YEAH it happens a lot, i think especially when there's some sort of steve/bucky/peggy love triangle in the mix

but yeah it did get frustrating at a point bc it was understandable post catws when ppl were writing fics and all they really had to draw from was catfa and the flashback in catws to draw from, and post catws bucky wasn't gonna be exactly like that version of himself, even if he was getting his memories back. but post cacw it's like, okay bucky HAS a personality - and fandom has been saying for years that he doesn't, like you are right that he's just enough of a blank slate to take some liberties, but he DOES have a personality in cw, the problem is more that bc it wasn't actually a captain america movie, steve himself didn't get as much focus so bucky especially didn't get as much as he might have if we'd gotten an ACTUAL cap 3 - so it's like. come on y'all can write him as a real person, you don't have to write him as being more in love with steve, you don't have to write him as a perfect angel who's So Good for loving steve despite whenever steve fucks up, which like, again, in fic are often kinda like, would steve be dumb in that way bc i don't think he would! obvs there are different ways to be smart but steve IS smart

i think part of it also has to do with sebastian and that's another thing that does kinda bug me. like let me be clear i do like sebastian and he is a fantastic actor, but he's one of those ones where ppl just yell about how he's the best actor and i don't think it's actually that he's performing better than most of the actors around him in the mcu, it's just that the character he's playing has all the trauma - as if the other characters don't, we just don't see much of it onscreen lmao - so ppl think that makes him more talented than everyone else (kinda think it was the same thing with dylan o'brien on teen wolf he'd shed a tear and ppl would yell about how he's the best actor in the world and fandom used that to push the main character of color to the side and forget about him in favor of the white sidekick ANYWAY that's bugged me forever though i can acknowledge my fave teen wolf ship is half dylan o'brien's character)

but yeah i think it's gotten somewhat worse since endgame bc fandom really loves the narrative that steve is terrible and selfish and bucky is an angel now, even though......y'all like bucky bc you were fans of the captain america trilogy so how can you buy into the idea that steve would do anything he did endgame. but like so many of those supposed fix it fics? would have steve going back to peggy for a WHILE and coming back to be with bucky - i skimmed one bc i was wary of the summary or tags or both and it was like steve came back as an old man and was like "yeah i spent my life with peggy and now i wanna start over and do it with you, you guys can just de-age me like you did with scott in the time machine :)" (as if that wasn't an accident would they even have been able to figure out how to do it on purpose??) that one was horrible - it's like, at that point, if you think steve sucks and bucky is a baby angel with no spine, why do you even want them to end up together? why on earth WOULD bucky be with steve after these kinds of actions? i don't get it

I agree with the Skywalker name thing. Rey’s relationship with Luke was never good in TLG and forced in TROS. She had a better connection with Han in TFA and Leia in the entire trilogy. Solo would’ve been better (but then people would say that makes her married to Ben or something gross) so Rey Organa would have been cool. But then that would require acknowledging that Leia was also adopted and blood never meant anything anyway 🙃🙃🙃

im still a fan of the skywalker name thing, bc i think for the ga it’s the most obvious and direct link. there’s a post that goes around every now and then about himym that talks about how the finale should be for the fans, and while i don’t totally agree with that statement i think there’s elements of truth to it, especially for something like star wars. the skywalker name has more weight for us (and in-universe) than either organa or solo, so it’s exciting to see it live on after lukes death imo

i see the appeal of rey organa. she was closer to leia and spent more time with her than luke or han, but at the same time leia never fully dove into jedihood, even if she obviously did lean into it some to train rey.

luke and leia represent two different paths of their lineage, leia going into the activist/political leader route like padme while luke embraces being a jedi like anakin. rey doesn’t seem to have much interest in pursuing the same career as leia, she’s more following in the footsteps of luke, so to me it’s obvious she’d choose the name that has more meaning as a jedi.

the organa name is the name of leaders who stood up for their beliefs. personally, id love to see the organa name live on in someone who embodies that more- and that’s not rey. really i think finn, general of the resistance who totally led a stormtrooper rebellion and is in need of a surname, would be more fitting as an organa than rey.

- It’s canon that Stan can dance well while Kyle doesn’t have rhythm whatsoever. Wouldn’t it be a cute idea for Stan to teach Kyle how to dance?

You Have 0 Friends

- Kyle pleading Stan to water his crops.

- A short detail but if you noticed when Kyle announced that they made an FB account for Stan, he only added himself as Stan’s friend. This means that Kyle legit “friended” himself in Stan’s profile and didn’t bother to add Kenny or Cartman to Stan’s friend list.

- “Yes. WE’RE REALLY GREAT FRIENDS STAN!!” :D

You’re Getting Old:

- Oof. Yeah....

- Stan obviously loves Kyle a whole lot, but him seeing Kyle slowly turn into a turd probably did break his heart little by little. And when I mean by probably, I mean massively.

- Kyle shouldn’t exactly be demonized for not being able to handle Stan’s cynicism. Because I think it’s ok to admit you can’t handle such emotional drainage even if coming from your SBF, but do mind that him leaving Stan was most likely NOT easy for him. It’s kinda sad that they’ve slowly drifted away since then. BUT NO I REFUSE TO LET THAT HAPPEN ;-;

Assburgers:

- “Fuck you Kyle! You’re a piece of shit...Kyle, I love you. You’re a piece if shit though, fuck you...! I love you...”

- Stan immediately going back to Kyle when he’s feeling “better”

- That McDonalds Exec. literally narrating Stan and Kyle’s current rocky relationship and not believing every second of if.

A Nightmare on Facetime:

- Kyle bringing and guiding Stan through the iPad.

Ginger Cow:

- Jokes aside, when Stan was asking Kyle about Cartman’s farts, he was really sweet and understanding to him. He genuinely wants to understand why Kyle likes Cartman’s farts so much and knew something was up by the way Kyle was hiding things.

- I also like how he was not afraid to call Kyle a dick. I think a good level of transparency is needed in a healthy relationship. That’s just how they roll.

- Stan helping Kyle cover up in the end....though it did backfire.

Black Friday Trilogy:

- “DID KYLE KNOW ABOUT THIS?!” “Kyle thought of it.” ;-;

- Stan being grounded and Kyle apologizing at the other side of the door was peak gay angst level.

- “That’s just how Xbox people are...” D:

- Ok now for something sweet. In the deleted scene, Stan was showing Kyle how the playstation controller works and...wow.......what cute babies.
