Sunny lil’ Thang

There goes they swinging their bat again. The zom-bear goes SPLAT on what’s left of the pavement in this vine-ridden town.

“There goes Smoky.” They murmur in distaste, eyeing the green mush and bones, stomping on it to ensure it was dead. I clasp my hands together and bow my head.

“Rip, he’ll be missed.”

They snort, pivoting towards me; their bat rests against their shoulder as they cock their head inquisitively. And if I may add, no zombie gunk in sight. “Are you sure about that?”

“Absolutely.” I nod reverencely, strolling over and indulge. “Such a symbol to all nature lovers out there.” I tip-toe past the sludge even though I wear rainboots.

“That’s right, you are one. Umm, yeah he’ll will be missed.” I laugh, almost haughty. They smile. Gah, my heart!~ I think I might melt under their sunbeams…

Oh, right! Introductions. Hi, I’m BW. That’s Vega. My nonbinary beloved.

Not much happens besides that for a minute per-say. Sure for someone not in a zombie-animal-corpse-apocalypse the killing of animal zombies ravaged by parasitics plants with water-bending and magic bat combo, it would be a lot! But not for me and Vega!

Plus we were quiet so we didn’t attract much attention. We stopped for obvious pee breaks and (I) chatted to some plants about the trouble that lurks ahead, cus of course there’s trouble ahead, there’s always trouble gor me and V. But nothing can stop us. We’re the ultimate team! Except for food, maybe that’ll be the end of us.

We’ve almost through town, we made it to a gas station, or… what it used to be. Best to stay clear, don’t want to accidentally BLOW UP, but eh- it happens…. Hey! Wait! What if I can bend the oil—

“… Hey….” Uh.. I snap my head from the decrepit gas station, gaze intently trained on them. They scratched their back of their head.

“Hey~” I finger-gun. So awkward….

“I never did tell you where we were going…” They glance back as we trot through the dingy dirty patches and roots, tapping the bat against their shoulder.

Distant moans echo in the distance, thankfully filling in any moments of silence or pauses. They inhaled deeply as their beanie sags on their curly brown hair. I speak up, accepting the offer for conversation, but keep it cool of course.

“I thought it was private or whatever.” Glancing in front to hop over a root, waving my hand around while the rest balled up in my pocket. “But regardless I would follow you to the ends of the earth—“ Shit.

“What—“ I stumble over a root but catch myself, a handy water hand pushes me forward from a nearby puddle. That doesn’t matter to me as much as Vega stares widely at me. Recover damnit!

“I mean-uh- it seems fun! The end of the earth thing. Duh. “ I muster a smirk, but not a confident one.

Oh BW, you useless lesbian.

“Ah… Okay. Well actually we’re not going to thr ends of the earth.” I gasp dramatically, hands pushing up my cheeks and wide eyes. Water seems to follow me, curling around my feet and acting like a skateboard, water-cruise slightly ahead of Vega’s pace.

“You’re not?”

“Shocker..! “ They wave their hands playfully defensively in front of them. “I know. But uh, I want… to sette?” Their voice cracked.

Settle?

Settle! Oh my gosh maybe the cottagecore dream will come true!

“Settle?” We seemed to stop, moving forward anyways, as they pace, while I cruise around them. Even fiddling with my updone bow, I probably need a new one soon.

“Yeah, uh,” The brunette does a double-handed swing at the air, no force behind it as they walk in circle. They’re practically shimmering in the sun with their tan skin….. ah…

“I always been into history and antiques an’ stuff.” Patting their handy bat. “And I was thinking might as well live in a museum right? A big one of course.” They glance away to the ground, tugging at their hair, even digging their shoe the dirt more.

They never do that. They aways look into peoples eyes. They’re chill but not too chill, like not aloof. Confident but not like too confident, may be a little arrogant…. But not…Are they scared? Worried? That I might judge them? Oh Vega…

“Yeah- n’ stuff.” I manage to say, thoughts clearing like water spreading away. I step closer.

“Well?”

“Well what?” I shrug, folding my arms behind me. They frown.

“Well what do you think?”

“What do I think?” I lean in, cracking a small smile. “It’s perfect.”

They blink as my smile grows. Their shoulders and grip on the bat even loosen. “That’s… all?”

“That’s all? No! It would be so cool! It’s a great idea babe, I mean hello! We don’t just get access to the displays but also the backrooms! And guess what we can find there—“ I skip ahead, they follow.

“This isn’t even mention where we could sleep! I mean hello! We got the whole place to ourselves! Imagine sleeping in a fake tree with a hamrock with trex bones as our stairs! Oh! Or race around in old convertibles!” I mutter the last part, espying a patch of dandelions. “If they work anyway.”

Their eyebrow shifts up, while the other quirks down, almost…. No, they’re weary. Oops, too much?

“Didn’t realize you would be… so invested in…. this.” My heart pounds loudly. The bat rests in their hands. I shrug again, smiling the best I can. Honesty is the best policy. Even when embarrassing. Right?

“Where you go, I go, ya know? I don’t got anywhere or anyone to be with right now... outside of you of course.” It took a moment, but they sigh. My heart even slows down. Am I safe?

Vega cracks a smile, shaking their head. My smile was genuine this time. There we go. I glance at the puddle below me. Oh thank sparks! My face isn’t red. That would be—

“What other ideas do you have for our bedding arrangement, B?”

B? B. B~ My heart swells, I can feel my face heat up, so I turn away. I spoke too soon. I march forward in hopefully the right direction. But— that’s my nickname to them. B. I love it- It’s taking everything to now turn to jello and passout so back to their question!

Well- Uh-“ I adjust my glasses, holding a piece of my raincoat as a shield. I cough a few times, then face Vega. I must of recovered if they aren’t questioning my face. Okay okay, museum honeymoon. Uhhhh— I light up!

I practically hop at the ideas rushing back to my brain.

“We could stay in the giftshop! Oh my gosh yes! So many trinkets there and we wouldn’t have to move ‘em to our bedding area, because we live in the giftshop! Butttt then there’s another thing to consider, the proximity to the bathroom—“ I’m practically skipping, and I flash a smile back at them, sun shining behind me for the last time today, probably blinding them. “Well don’t just stand there! Come on! Oo! And the food court—“

Vega shakes their head as they follow BW, muttering with a soft yet sweet smile. “Such a sunny lil’ thang…”

It’s been on his mind for a while. Usually, he suppresses the thought with something else and for some time, it works. Yet that night, it badgers and badgers until Link thinks he might burst. The words fall from his lips before he can think to stop them,

“Do you prefer the old me?”

Zelda’s fingers still in his hair. Whatever absentminded braid she’d been working on falls short in the absense of her work. There’s quiet, like she’s thinking of what to say, and then,

“What?” Her voice sounds as confused as he imagines her face. He guesses he wasn’t very clear with his question.

“I mean, the me from before…before the Calamity,” he clarifies. He can’t remember much of what he was like, but sometimes he wonders. Sometimes, Zelda weeps at night, and no matter how tightly he holds her, he knows there are pieces of her he cannot put back together again—in the same way that pieces of himself have been lost to her, too. They are two shattered persons trying to make one whole, symphonic picture that could not fit the frame it once sat in. He wants to know where she stands.

“No,” she says, like it’s the easiest answer in the world. Her hands slip from his hair and find his shoulders instead, her featherlight touch dancing over the rough skin of his scars.

“You…prefer me now?” he asks, brows furrowed.

“No,” Zelda repeats. Now he’s confused, but before he can open his mouth, her hands are ghosting his sides in the way she knows makes him jump. He knows what’s coming, but he’s powerless to stop the poke to his sides that makes him squirm. She does it again, and again, until he’s doubled over with laughter.

A soldier, ticklish. How utterly humiliating.

Except, when he turns onto his back so that he can try to use his hands as a line of defense, Zelda’s grin makes it hard to hold to that embarrassment.

“No need to compare,” she says. “I like you. I like Link. But I especially like a laughing you.”

She pokes again. His hands grasp blindly for hers as he gasps for breath.

“I like a smiling you,” Zelda continues, and when she’s poking him, it’s hard to gain control of the situation. It’s a good thing Calamity Ganon never learned of a ticklish hero.

His hands catch hers at last, but she already has them over his head, pressing down into the bedsheets. She leans in close, her nose brushing his just enough to make him dizzier than the tickle fit had, and his face burns. He knows it’s flustered from all of the laughter, but Zelda makes it no better. He can’t catch his breath; not when she’s so close to kissing him.

“…and I love you most like this. Happy, flustered, looking at me like I’ve given you the world.”

“You have,” he replies without missing a beat. Without her, he would not have had a world to return to.

Zelda smiles, and when she finally grants him a taste of it, he decides whatever distinctions lay between the old and current him make no differences in how deeply he loves her, and how far he is willing to go to prove it.

Anyway, here is my analysis so I can get on with my life.

Firstly, N and HD are very quick to put up the "I have" signs, even before clarifying if the crush is on Bridgerton or across their career. They're both a bit bashful as well. I STRONGLY believe they have crushes on a Bridgerton cast member. Now, CJ's response is more interesting to me. She is flat out denying it before it's even been clarified, and is quite defensive about it, probably because she is the only one (publicly) who is in a committed, long-term relationship. She has a lot more at stake in her response so decides to go to the level of extreme denial. She may also feel that it may force N and HD to respond in the negative, so there aren't any whispers about pairings on Bridgerton (particularly evident at the end when she looks at their "I have never" responses re. Bridgerton and says "yeah look at us, we're good, aren't we good"). However, she probably doesn't realise that by doing this, she puts N and HD in a prickly position. They may feel the need to be disingenuous and lie so that they don't 'rock the boat'. You can see N and HD kind of flipping their answers and HD says something like "it happens way too often... oh, not on this job", which seems really forced lol.

N does something that is really funny to me. She challenges CJ's response and says something like, "yeah you do. You get kind eyes!" I think N says this without thinking too. I believe she does this because she wants to be as genuine as possible. She is trying to make it an even playing field in the process so that her response isn't viewed as the 'different one'. Now, by N saying this she confirms that 1) CJ's crush is definitely on Bridgerton (ofc they would only be having convos about 'kind eyes' on set re. cast members), and 2) They definitely talk about their crushes. Then things get all confused and N goes on to say the infamous "well it's a very attractive cast, let's be real... oh no, in general", which obviously makes no sense.

So in conclusion, imo based on the video evidence (lol), they've all crushed on Bridgerton cast. If I had to guess, I reckon CJ crushed on Theo/Calam (or LT, but maybe that's a bit too obvious), HD crushed on Victor (or maybe LT too lol), and we can all guess who N crushed/IS CRUSHING on.

Steve's laughter echoed against your eardrum as you snaked your arms around his neck.

He was loosely holding onto your waist with one hand, the other latching onto the wheel of the car for dear life. You could tell your impromptu display of affection had startled him, because he was chuckling nervously now, something he often did when he wasn't sure how to respond with words.

You both had just received good news. Well, Steve had.

Amid all the calamity - smoke, fire, and raging beasts - things had started to settle down in Hawkins. Albeit, to the ordinary, the news Steve had shared with you was much more anticlimactic than your reaction let on, but for you and Steve, it was a monumental occasion that was deserving of you crawling into his lap while he was behind the wheel of his 1983 BMW.

The car careened to the left and right as you settled backwards in his lap, as if you both were lounging on the couch and not in a vehicle that was now going 25 miles per hour.

Eyes wide with surprise, Steve tried sitting up further in his seat to look past you at the wide open road. There wasn't a car in sight for miles, yet even if there was, your reaction would've been the same.

"You trying to get us killed, y/n?"

"No," you mumbled against his ear as you readjusted yourself. His free arm was insistent upon returning you to the passenger's seat safely, but he couldn't complete the mission without removing both hands from the wheel. Sighing in defeat, with a smile lacing his lips and a quirked eyebrow to match, his tight hold on your waist loosened as both your arms rested around his neck.

"I'm just happy for you. I knew that job was yours," you said, embracing his neck as the car swerved a bit. The hand around your waist eventually found its way to your back in a thankful pat.

"Thanks, but maybe we can cuddle when I'm not driving?"

You could feel the smirk of arrogance lacing his mouth without even seeing it. He was loving this, but at the same time trying to get you both home in one piece. The adrenaline pumping through your veins suddenly found its way to your cheeks. Steve was normally the one to initiate any sort of hand holding or cuddling, and yet, when a sliver of happiness - a sliver of hope - seeped its way into your system, you couldn't hold back the joy that was demanding to be set free.

Steve getting hired for a real job - not one involving scooping ice-cream or stocking the latest VHS tapes onto rusting shelves - was the biggest good news you had heard in quite some time. Compared to watching the local news and waiting for you, your friends,' and boyfriend's demises as Hawkins slowly turned into a fiery furnace - normal news sounded like a miracle.

Normal news sounded like Heaven.

Slowly you peeled back, your hands dropping to his shoulders. The car was still careening at a solid speed of 25 in a 45. All four windows were down, making it feel like you were going faster.

Sensing your excitement temporarily diminish, Steve tightened his hold on your waist, his grip on the wheel temporarily loosening, though he kept his eyes forward.

"You should be as happy as I am," you mumbled, your arms going around his neck again as he refused to let you sulk back to your seat.

"I am," he assured you with a smile that didn't erase the panic in his features. Amid the constant teasing and the attempts to make you bashful, he was always worried about your safely. In this case, his worries were obviously valid. He glanced at you this time, his eyes playing tug of war between the road and you. "But if I don't make it out of this car alive, it'll all be for nothing."

Playfully, you hit his arm and he laughed all while trying to keep the car from crashing. He kissed your cheek as you settled your chin on his shoulder again, the action tickling his neck. The car dipped into the shoulder before settling in the center of the asphalt again.

You gave him one final embrace before pulling back. Just as you were about to return to the passenger's seat, he pulled you closer by the waist. Between kisses you both laughed. With each swerve of the car, you both embraced the adrenaline rush that swelled throughout your veins, knowing it was nothing compared to the fear you both had experienced the past several months.

How a Modern Perspective Skews Historical Characters: A Mini Rant on the Hatred of Female Characters in RDR2

This isn't that organized cuz it's more a rant than a retrospective but fuck it it's my blog, I do what I want-

There are so many people who have actual hatred, not criticisms, for Abigail, Molly, Grimshaw, Mary, and other female characters in the Red Dead universe.

And honestly? I find it very interesting. Sure, men will probably always find a reason to hate a female character, but what I find interesting is how many women also hate these wonderfully crafted characters.

It could be so many reasons as to why this may be the case but honestly? I think it's because people forget that they CANNOT analyze this game authentically through the modern lens of morals and behaviors. This game takes place in 1899 America. Let me say it again. This game takes place in 1899 America.

One more time, just for good measure- this game takes place in FUCKING 1899 America. Women had to be dependent on men because otherwise? They'll either be in poverty, exploited, killed, or all three. There was also the honor system. When had to be the moral high ground for their family so them messing up has consequences on their fathers, mothers, siblings, cousins, and anyone connected to their family name.

Abigail getting pissy at John for getting in trouble all the time? If course it'd feel annoying if you're looking at it through the modern perspective but when you don't, it's a woman telling her man to act like a man and be careful because if he doesn't, she and her son will be destitute and destroyed.

Mary not getting with Arthur but using him? What's the likely hood that the law would bother to help Mary when the two people she needs help with are her father and brother- two grown men who can make their own choices that she literally can do nothing about because as a woman, it wasn't her place to dictate what they do. Arthur was her only option. "Girl, what her family thinks doesn't matter, she still should've gotten with him" girl no, because it's much harder and difficult than that- it's like tearing away an entire identity that you depend on to fucking survive.

"but what about Sadie? She was also living during this time period and she isn't drowned by societal expectations-"

Seriously. Do some research, read a book, expand your knowledge of gender roles and what that entails for people because it explains so many things about these characters in such a human way. They aren't "bitches", they are women of their time and people have to understand that.

No. Sadie isn't a part of this discussion because though she is a fun character and an amazing character, she is a mishmash of historical women who did masculine things to survive at one point but then went back to traditional roles, even if they did occasionally go back to to those old activities for sport sometimes, like Anne Oakley or Calamity Jane. Sadie's entire character is basically "but what if they didn't and committed to the nontraditional lifestyle". There are many inconsistencies that Rockstar did regarding the time period that they established earlier to accommodate Sadie's character better. Sadie is a great character but she doesn't belong in this discussion.

Edit: Ok, since this was a rant, as mentioned previously, I was a bit too rushed with the Sadie aspect of this post and ignored some crucial details. I'm not gonna change the post besides just this though. @hillbillyhipster84 made some great points that Sadie was a reference to Appalachian women and real outlaw women who did run and were accomplices in men's crimes, that I was too ignorant to mention prior beforehand because I didn't do much research. I still don't believe that People should use Sadie to bash the other women though, because those women mentioned above were not the status quo and thus were more trivialized because of it.

So many cultures still operate like this too so if anything, you're just learning something new about another culture.

Do you have revalink fic recs?

Oh do I ever. (Please don't take the numbers that I use too seriously, they're not to really judge the quality of work or anything it's just level of enjoyment for me and my particular tastes)

My favorite Revalink fic of all time is Pinesong by aperplexingpuzzle!! Honestly it's just an absolutely amazing work, and personally I think it's one of the greatest post-calamity Revalink stories written. Link and Revali bond on Vah Medoh after Revali's been freed and exists as a spirit, and while Link struggles through the rest of his adventure. Absolutely recommend, 10/10.

Finding Link by Umbreonix is another one I'd absolutely recommend. It's so silly and just - the characterization of Link and Revali is so fun. Link goes missing after the defeat of Calamity Ganon, and it's up to Revali to find him and potentially bring him back. Honestly Umbreonix's other Revalink work Beating about the bush is also phenomenal - that one's unfinished, but it's also great if you want to read something silly. It's a modernized/human version of Hyrule, which is super interesting as well. All That Glitters is hilarious as well. Recommend them all around 8.5/10.

Linger On by ICanFlyHigher is one I genuinely loved as well. It's been a while since I've read it, but I do know that the vivid descriptions of combat and fighting, and just - the immersion of it is so impressive. So I'd really really recommend this one. It's basically just Botw, but you're really put in Link shoes + that extra touch of Revalink. Again, haven't read it in a while, but 9/10 recommendation from what I remember.

I Lost Myself by self_indulgent_authorship is amazing as well. I love reading from Revali's perspective, and just - the take on Link and Revali getting to know each other after Link's lost his memory is so interesting and refreshing. I wouldn't recommend it if you don't like a bit of Zelda-bashing, but I think this fic handles it well and it didn't feel as if it were over the top or anything. 9/10 recommendation.

Snow filled days by SharkPinata is a great one if you're just down for a fun time!! The author kind of took a concept/idea and ran with it, and the plot grew later - and it shows, a bit, but honestly that's part of the fun with this fic. A great thing about it is you can also see the author's writing style improve over time as they write (I desperately hope that the same can be said about my fics too), so it's fun in that aspect of well. The concept is that Link isn't a knight, and just lives in Selkie's Spot in Hebra - where Revali regularly comes to visit him because they're each other's only friends. 7.5/10 recommendation.

Shades of Blue also by self_indulgent_authorship is just fucking amazing. It's the normal botw journey, but you get so much more intricate lore and flashbacks than the OG game - one where Link and Revali knew each other before they became champions - and it's so so so so good. I genuinely think it's one of the greatest Breath of the Wild fics out there, regardless of Revalink. 10/10 recommendation.

Come Morning Light by misscoconi is great as well!! I haven't read it in a long while but I do know it's one of my favorites. It's very sweet - and it's where Link and Revali begin a shared sleeping arrangement. (Meet Me Halfway is the sequel, also very good.) 10/10 recommendation.

The Longest Night by tirsynni is amazing. It's a relatively short fic, and it's unfinished, but it's still just - great. Trigger warning for some things, I'd definitely recommend reading the tags first, but like, I love. It's an interesting exploration of Link's psyche, and Revali's response to it. Honestly, anything by tirsynni tends to be amazing. 8/10 recommendation.

The Effect of the Illusion of Truth by GeryutheTzakandi!!! This is genuinely one of my favorite fics ever - it's so silly and funny and just an all-around good time. Small warning in that it's unfinished and hasn't updated since 2022, but like - I'd still give it a read because what is there is a fun time. It's a fic where Revali and Link decided to get married so that Link and Zelda don't have to. (And no, the two of them were not previously dating.) 10/10 recommendation.

(Another good one by GeryutheTzakandi is Deftly avoiding saying exactly what you mean - this one's hilarious, and Revali is surprisingly self-aware.)

Inertia by sincosma is a great exploration of how Link's amnesia affects the relationship between him and Revali - and what promises they made pre-Calamity. The memories are so interesting yet heart-breaking to read - but the happy ending makes it very much worth it. 9/10 recommendation.

A Seed of Song by Ginneke is adorable. I'm always a sucker for child fics/baby acquisition fics, especially if they're done well, and, well - this one is definitely done well. It's very cute - it's unfinished, but I still think it's worthwhile to read what's been written so far. The drama of Link not wanting to marry Princess Zelda is also very interesting. 7.5/10 recommendation.

Under the Stars by peterpiez is one of my favorites!! Honestly because it's one of the very few Revalink Linked Universe fics to exist. There's very little active Revalink, given most of it is just Link mourning and being retrospective in response to the lives and loves of the other Links, but I still really enjoyed. This is also unfinished, and I don't see the author ever updating it, but I still would recommend giving it a go.

The Last Song on the Wind by Inked_Jael is another incredible fic. There's so much worldbuilding, and insight to Link's thoughts, I just love this one so much. It's super interesting because it explores the politics and the different cultures of Hyrule. I know second-person style can sometimes throw people off, but I think it works really really well given the story - and also if you keep in mind that it's about Link, just... please read this. Their work needs more love. 10/10 recommendation.

a moment's respite by cottonmouthcandy is another one of my favorites. It's a bit of a sad read, because it's pre-calamity and you know what's coming for the champions in the future, but it's a story where you get to just enjoy with them their little vacation at the beach. It's just sweet, and nice. It's been a while since I've read it, though, so those are more just the vibes that I remember rather than the content of the story itself. 9/10 recommendation.

the wind through the flowers by HopeStoryteller is also just a silly, fun time. The boys go Modulga hunting. 7.5/10 recommendation.

When director Hidemaro Fujibayashi said that Zelda in TOTK is “going through growth, experiencing things, and ultimately figuring out what kind of a person she’s going to be,” how would you say that is reflected in the game? What kind of person do you think she realizes she wants to be? What scene(s) reflect her overall growth?

Zelda’s growth in this game is all about choosing her role, becoming a leader for a freshly healing Hyrule, and about finding her place in the past. For so many, I think we misinterpret growth and development, as Zelda’s main growth in BoTW was directly tied to her magic and her narrowed outlook on life.

In botw, Zelda disregards the reason she needs a knight, naively travels by herself for research purposes, cannot understand the magic supposedly within her, detests the magic, and ultimately detests herself. She’s constantly bottling up her emotions, to the point that she lashes out and it is even commented by Daruk that she “can’t quite see the ranges” because she was incredibly sheltered and stubborn as a result from the constant pressure to do as she is told, not as she thinks. We do see Zelda working on this, as a result of finally seeing Link for who he is, rather than what she has assumed of him. On top of that personal development, she is pitted against a prophecy that TELLS her what she has to do. And when she finally unlocks her magic, in a moment of pure love and selflessness, she is forced to adhere to the prophecy, to do as the sword’s spirit says, to play her part in this prophecy.

I think so many people think Zelda’s development is shallow or barely there in ToTK because we don’t see that personal development piece we get with Zelda and Link’s relationship. And the reason for that is simple— Zelda is now an adult, she has matured and grown from the development we got to see in botw. She’s at peace with herself and with the fact that her magic is basically gone.

The thing she spent the entirety of her life focusing on— it’s gone. Zelda no longer has that pressure on her shoulders. There’s no prophecy to live up to. There’s no kingdom to protect.

But there is one to rebuild.

We see through Princess Sightings side quests how Zelda has truly traveled the world of Hyrule and gotten to know her people. She is beloved by all— she did NOT immediately reclaim a throne abandoned for a century. She did NOT make it a priority to rebuild castle town and the castle. I have seen people actively BASH these things, but it makes so much sense when you consider who Zelda is.

Zelda is this legendary Princess that has been holding back Calamity Ganon for a century— everyone knows of her (which is confirmed by talking to NPC’s, one of the most notable being Manny from Hateno). And from ToTK, we see that she has formed research teams, a Guard, presumably (with the shared opinion of Robbie and Purah) cleared nearly all traces of Sheikah tech from Hyrule, built a school to ensure education is properly taught, and invigorated Hyrule’s kingdom through COMMUNITY and CULTURE. Zelda could not just sweep away the rubble on her throne in the Sanctum and start ordering shit around from the castle.

She integrated herself back into Hyrule, learned the people of NOW and grew to love them. Zelda acted as a symbol for a long time and she finally got to show everyone exactly who she is. A kind, compassionate, incredibly smart girl who lived in a village just like everyone else. She put the focus on healing the kingdom and rebuilding it. Which brings us to the world we see in ToTK.

One question in general helps us pinpoint Zelda’s development in ToTK: What is her purpose of being in the past?

This question is first introduced through Rauru, who posed it as a “why”. Why did Zelda’s magic bring her back to this point in time? Why is she here, at the moment in time where Hyrule is currently under the rule of its first King and Queen. Now let’s take a look at this— Zelda went back in time. A newly developed kingdom. The first King and Queen. So that + that = fuckin parallels PEOPLE!!! PARALLELS!!!! Ooh man do I love parallels.

ANYWAY. This introduces Zelda’s main development in ToTK. Whereas in botw her character constantly expected to act as she is told, do as is prophesied (is that a word? … I have a degree in professional writing but that word looks so incorrect… sorry, carry on), and ultimately accepts that the thing she vied for her entire life has been drained, her character in ToTK is now given the chance to DO as she wants, to find her own role, to make her OWN choice.

It’s foreshadowed with Zelda unlocking her magic in botw by way of her own, deliberate, selfless choice to love and protect Link that grants her a path to save everyone else. Zelda’s entire CHOICE is a key focus in her journey.

Zelda chooses to train her magic, to learn about the Zonai, to befriend the sages, to immerse herself in the culture of a Hyrule long forgotten by time. There was no one telling her what she HAD to do. Instead, she was guided. Zelda is supported by Sonia and Rauru in ways she was never granted as a child.

And in this, she learns that even having EVERYTHING she was deprived of in botw, they will fail. They couldn’t save Sonia. They won’t stop Ganondorf.

Zelda, through all of this, develops as a LEADER. She acts as a Sage and ultimately finds herself confused at Rauru’s steadfast determination. She knows he will die if they face off with Ganondorf. He knows he will too. But.

“Maybe so. But it is my duty to try.”

Rauru is the King of Hyrule. He made the choice best suited for his kingdom, to be the sacrifice in order to let the world continue on in his absence. He did what was best for the kingdom— not what was best for him as a person. He was secure in his role as the King of Hyrule, he knows the type of leader he is and wants to be.

Zelda… has not yet figured that out for herself. She is beloved, known to the people of Hyrule for his compassionate deeds and lovely personality, but she has yet to cement herself as the Queen of Hyrule. Naturally, she was born a Princess and remembered to be, but she is not a Queen. She is the Princess of a newly developing kingdom, one being rebuilt from rubble. But she is not the Queen. She is the only royal family member left.

Zelda’s character in ToTK develops to be a QUEEN.

Her actions and assured choices speak VOLUMES over the ones she took when she was listening to the words of others. Instead, she CHOSE to TRY. She embraced the duty to her kingdom, even if it took EVERYTHING she had to offer. Her sense of self and her life. Gone. She expected to NEVER wake up as she does in the end of totk. She knew precisely WHY she found herself in the past, in that era, and with Sonia, Rauru, and the sages.

Zelda chooses to have faith in Link, to heal the sword, to lose herself… all for her kingdom. The one she was rebuilding. The one she was healing with. Zelda becomes her own, mature leader in ToTK. And this is even FURTHER established at the very end, with the extra cutscene of Zelda, Link, and the new sages. They vow to support ZELDA.

The last vow was the serve the King of Hyrule. Zelda now finds herself in the same position, albeit different circumstances and new people.

Zelda’s development in ToTK is establishing the leader she WANTS to be, the person she matured TO be, and ultimately the Queen she WILL be.

Zelda’s story is so emotional and there are so many layers to dig through that I am so so thankful to have the opportunity to discuss this. She is absolutely PRECIOUS and I am so proud of her and the journey from botw to the end of totk.

Got this idea by spacexseven and oh my god the brain rot that i had for jouno’s part before actually writing it, i had sooo many ideas for him. Best read with a male reader but gn works as well.

Jouno:

Usually talking wasn't exactly your type, getting into drama even less so, but you can't help but overhear talks about a Jouno. Figuring that you won't ever actually talk to the man, you ignored all the sadist claims about him. Afterall it was none of your business, but you should’ve have been wary about the rumors. There were instances where you did see him in passing, a tiny smile on his face. Other than those times you weren't concerned when really you should have at least kept your guard up.

All it took to get your attention was a tap on your shoulder and a condescending smile that gave off a strong warning. To say it irked you would be an understatement. 

The conversation he started, began fairly casual, asking about what you were doing. This calamity quickly broke when he asked about your business with X, claiming that they were simply too busy to interact with strays. He also attatched vague threats while asking you questions moreso related about X. his smile getting ever so slightly bigger when you staggered back in a wave of uncomfortability. You had your best efforts to explain how it was for work and nothing more, you and X only having a lukewarm understanding of each other. It took a lengthy amount of unnerving silence and Jouno’s expressionless face to turn into a quiet hum from him. Putting up a hand to his chin in thought, until he asked you for more information on X and to take notes for him. Obviously not without poorly concealed threats about if you didn't comply those “rumors" would be tested out on you. 

At least you weren't dead or injured so you’ll take it to avoid being those two things in the near future.

He ended up forcing you to go to a cafe to meet up with him every other week, giving him the notes and briefly explaining what was in them. These notes were mainly audio based to make it easier for him, while you didn't mind doing it, he would complain about how you sounded in them. This was his favorite part of these meetings, making you stressed out and audibly groan at his complaints. Not to mention the degrading comments that came with the meetings. You attempt to say if he ever wanted to get with X the degrading comments had to go, he simply hummed in response, effectively ignoring you. He annoyed you to no end but you gained a little odd sense of pride noting everytime he would give a little smile towards your work.

Soon these meetups became more during the week, instead of 0-1 per week, it started to become 2-3 a week. These updates in schedule made you panic due to the notes you had to record for him, (you knew if you brought this up he’d just laugh cruelly at you).  

However, during this time period something strange started to happen with his attitude towards people around you, mainly any close friends near to you. Whisking you away from your friends because in his words “you’re supposed to be taking notes for me not getting distracted.” and overall trying to intimidate anyone that came close. 

You decided to ignore it since he was more focused on getting information and would not accept you slipping up. The only thing making you want to bash your head in was his sometimes cocky comments about how X should be glad he's seeking them out. Casually noting how he talked about them like an object at times, something he's gonna win, a prize. Overall despite this, you came to like Jouno as a person despite his odd moments of pride but you weren't one to judge after all. (The way he bluntly and sometimes rudely talks to X makes you heavily conflicted.) Sometimes he’d let you vent your own troubles while giving his own advice, be it in a more joking way. It made you loosen up your guard for him but it still felt off, knowing it would never be a proper friendship with the man.

The next time you two meet up, he buys your drink along with something else from the menu, claiming it was for all your hard work as of late. Jouno gave a genuine smile at your reaction towards his generosity. You gave him a small comment about how this would be a great start for X. This wasn't the right move apparently. He immediately tenses up, starts scolding you on how you weren't grateful for what he did for you and not X. After nervously drinking while avoiding Jouno's heavily annoyed expression, you were ready to leave. After a while he apologizes for his sudden outburst, saying he’d take your words into consideration. 

Eventually when you were close to him, he would ask if you could make the notes about yourself instead of X. it caught you off guard but you went along with it, agreeing to do so (it also cured the major headache about scraping for information about X). Sometimes when you were drinking, he'd reach over to your free hand and squeeze with enough pressure to make it hurt. Jouno was adoring the pained breaths that came out of your mouth along with your obvious pained reaction physically. The more degrading comments start to become more frequent while oddly being overly possessive of you. Yet you wanted to continue being ignorant and think he's just being stressed over his own work and future with X. he visited you everyday he could, smiling every time you’d look his way. But this has its downside, driving away anyone who dared try to talk or engage with you about anything.

Then it came full circle, you needed to talk to X about something related to your actual work. You hadn't noticed Jouno following you. Getting a few sentences in before you’re engulfed by Jouno’s arms around your waist. 

X was tensed up, unwilling to look your way, the air became eerily strained.

“Darling, what are you doing talking to strays that aren't worth our time?”
