Meet: “Ghost” Simon Riley (Reboot)

Appears in Call of Duty Modern Warfare (2019), Call of Duty: Warzone, Call of Duty Mobile, Call of Duty Modern Warfare II (2022), and Call of Duty Warzone 2.0

CW: Spoilers for both Modern Warfare Timelines

There are two separate versions of the character Ghost. One is from the classic timeline, and the other is from the reboot timeline. Both are absolute fan favorites and I don’t blame them. There are some major changes to the second Modern Warfare timeline that drastically affect Ghost. Primarily the fact that he doesn’t die to general shepherd like he did in the classic timeline.

Ghost is a British man from Manchester, England. He is 6′4″ and much like his counterpart is face overall not known, but hair and eye color are identified. Ghost has brown hair and brown hair (so far) in the reboot, while his Classic counterpart has black hair and green eyes.

This Ghost is primarily in the Modern Warfare Reboot timeline. His counterpart is in the Classic Modern Warfare.

Simon Riley (Reboot) first appears in Call of Duty Modern Warfare (2019). 

Ghost joined the SAS, proving his skills for covert missions, including sabotage, ambushes, infiltrations, illegal trade, and more. He’s concealed his identity by his iconic skull printed mask. Captain John Price would eventually recruit him into taskforce 141. It didn’t take long for Ghost to become a commanding officer for the taskforce.

As a member of taskforce 141 Ghost assists the other members and allies of Captain Price in their dangerous missions, including starting the journey to stop Zakhaev and his infamous force. His brutal efficiency, apathy towards violence, and great skills in clandestine proved to be exactly what the taskforce needed. Although he has a brush with death due to Graves/Shepherd’s betrayal, he pushes onwards. Eventually forming a secondary team known as Ghost Team, which is a combination of taskforce 141 and Los Vaqueros. 

Ghost has three notable traits, a strong set of dark humor, apathy towards violence, and an intense need for being unknown. He is seen frequently making dark jokes, and bringing the military humor to the team (a trait he shares with his classic counterpart, but it does slightly different this time). He is also seen taking out his enemies with brutal efficiency.

Ghost shares a strong rivalry with fellow Taskforce 141 member, Soap, fueled by their rivaling national identities (English & Scottish). Overtime their frenemy situation-ship becomes an incredibly close bond, far more implied to some form of bromance. When Soap gets injured from Graves’ attempt of betrayal, he shows an increased amount of sympathy than he normally does to anything, proving their notable bond. 

Ghost is also quite close with Captain Price, as Price is quite close to all of his crew(s). He takes the time to learn Spanish both for work and jokes to get along closer with Los Vaqueros. In the past he has also worked with Mace, but not much is known about the two’s relationship back in the SAS, it is implied that they might be enemies now.

The soldier will continue to go on in his timeline, and what happens next I have no clue, but am excited to see what they come up with. This is all notably different from how his journey goes in the Classic Timelines, where he fatally meets his end from Shepherd’s betrayal alongside Roach. 

The character himself plays a major role in the Call of Duty Community, being one of the first characters the big boy companies acknowledged as a fan favorite. He’s among all the sub groups of Call of Duty’s fandoms, being the guy every boy wanted to drink with in 2010s, and now the guy every artist wants to draw in...questionable positions.

Kiba gives me the outline for what they want to happen in the scene, and I write it out, adding my own flare here and there. It's been so much fun to work together to bring Kiba's visions to life!

14. What’s your all time favorite ship? As much as I love soapghost, I think sheith will always have my heart.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? So far, I've finished or am actively working on all my WIPs... 😯 I do have an idea for a soapghost inter-dimensional-travel, angst-with-a-bittersweet ending fic, but that one hasn't gotten past outline phase. That's the closest I have to a fic I might never finish. (This fic would also win "angstiest ending," btw.)

16. What are your writing strengths? I think I write dialogue and emotions/introspection pretty well.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? I struggle with descriptions - they are often what I "add in" during the editing phases. I'm also a VERY SLOW writer, which is why it takes so long to update sometimes.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I don't do it unless I have a native speaker willing to help me with the translation. Otherwise, it's just English but in italics. LOL

I'm new to the COD fandom (I guess that's what you call it?) and I wanted to ask if you had a good starting point for the games. I wanted to watch the walkthroughs to learn the story, but there's like a bajillion that spans back 20 years. Is there a good starting point or do I start all the way from the beginning?

oh jesus, there's like 19 main games without counting the mobile ones lol. So depending on what story you want, you're going to have to watch different walk-throughs/play multiple games.

Okay, so if you want to play the new reboots of 2007 Modern Warfare and 2009 Modern Warfare 2, play the 2019 and 2022 Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2.

If you want to start at the games where all of us did when we were like 10 and had no business playing war games, meeting Soap, meeting Ghost, meeting Price and the others, play Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007). The next game that directly correlates to COD4: MW is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009). The following and final game is going to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011).

So the Call of Duty Modern Warfare games follows:

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011)

All the other games are different series involving different characters, but these three are the original games that the new reboots are based on. So the series Black Ops, it has it's own story and characters different to MW.

If you want to start at the VERY BEGINNING, that's going to be the first COD, Call of Duty (2003), but like I said, the games jump times, so one day you're in WW1 the next WW2, then you're in the future, then you're in the Cold War, COD is notorious for jumping times each game. But the COD games we're all butt-fuck crazy about are the three (including the reboots) listed above: MW1, MW2, and MW3.

All games can be found on PC on Steam, most likely X-Box 360 and PS3, given that these came out before the X-Box 1 and PS4. I would highly recommend going the PC route and buying the games from Steam.

Oh weird, sorry the links didn't work. Also, don't apologize, might be because of a different country? Not sure. And again, I may not know everything, but I'm always glad to help and do a little digging as well.

Now, keep in mind that call of duty has a mot of installments and not everyone can agree or even figure out how the games are supposed to be played. I would say stick with the games that are connected, like the Black Ops, MW of trilogy, WW2, and World at War are all connected along with two of them having their own set of games after it. (Black Ops and MW)

Now, I'm not sure I could list all 19 games, I will totally do that if the link is jigged. But my personal preference when it comes to game isn't year, but certainly immersion.

So I would recommend keeping the trilogy like (MW 2007, MW2 2009 and MW3 2011) all together. It keeps it all nice and even for me so I can have my ducks in a row.

And same with Black Ops though it's a little longer. There are many games that tie into it. (Call of Duty: World at War, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War)

Call of Duty: Ghost's only has one installment, can be played on its own. And the new reboot trilogy follows (MW 2019, MW2 2022, and MW3 which is on pre-release right now)

It's a pretty confusing timeline, I'll give it that. So you can stick to the release dates of each game, that way you can at least play the trilogies and such in order, or you could go by the way of the link. There is still a lot of debate even within some of the most committed groups (more committed than me at least) who are still trying to figure it out.

okay so I just got into the modern warfare games and im currently on the first mw call of duty game watching a gameplay of just the cutscenes

most of my knowledge is from clips or fics, but im looking for something along the lines of maybe my pregnant younger oc having some sort of powers (very random but bare with me here) and being put on the 141 task force to help the team out. you'd play whoever you see fit as a parental figure for her! this could also be an age gap relationship type of thing since she would be around 18-19!

I could try to do a double up but I don't know who I'd really be able to play!

im semi to advanced literate, currently going to be a very quick at replying and I love talking ooc about headcannons and all of that stuff ❤️

Character background: Kassandra grew up in northern Alberta like Reyes, she actually lived across from him for half her life before she moved more central Alberta. Her life was pretty normal, till after she moved. After the move her father decided he didn't want to be around them anymore. One night he just walked out the door and never came back. Her mother was a medical technician for the local hospital and became a single mother. Kass never knew what happened to her father and looked for him but never found anything. When she was 18 she went down the paramedic route but dropped out a halfway through the year. Her mother was supportive with anything Kass wanted to do, her family had relatives in the Canadian Task force for three generations before her mom ended that so she one day decided that she wanted to continue that legacy. At 19 she enrolled. 21 she became a sharpshooter for them. 24 she was caught by the enemy when she was on vacation. That was when she got the reputation for being bloodthirsty. When she got caught she was tortured for three months, part of the ways was her back being whipped. When her team found her, she was unlocked and even though weak grabbed a knife went to the dead body of her torturer to stabbed them almost 15 times. After she grabbed a gun and helped her team clean up the area, she didn't leave no on alive, sometimes even sneaking up on them to kill them close range. That is also when her country noticed the skill for being an assassin for them. It took her only 2 years to be properly trained and in the field. Half a month after 141 took an interest to her skill set. She was reintroduce to Reyes and there friendship lighted back up. Soap took an interest to her and ghost, well ghost she's not sure about. She likes him and is interested in him as a friend and something more.

Hi! So i have a quick question, is Roze operator a part of the Shadow Company or just KorTac now? her Blackout skin appears to have an emblem resembling 141 patch and also Shadow Company one. I saw some random person on youtube make up thing like how she's a part of the 141 and not Farah, also how she used to work with Mace and Ghost as a former disbanded Ghost team, but none of this makes sense and seems like a huge pile of misinformation that someone likes to treat as a fact. What do you think?

Roze was originally part of Shadow Company after she discontinued serving in the US Army Rangers. She worked with them for some time, and worked under the Allegiance faction as well. After awhile she stopped working with them, and now currently works for KorTac.

Roze does in fact know Mace from both of their time in the US Army Rangers, and both ended up leaving for their own reasons.

They stayed in contact with each other. Mace originally helped Roze join him in the Jackals Merc Group, but she left that too for Shadow Company and Allegiance. The two stayed cordial still, and Mace eventually met up with her in Allegiance.

Both of them also worked in Armistice at some point (as the Jackals, and later Shadow Company for Roze), which Ghost also worked in (under SAS). However Armistice disbanded messily, and infighting occurred.

However Roze is definitely not a member of taskforce 141, and hasn't been yet. She also hasn't been a part of a Ghost team yet, but she is related story-wise to two ghost masked. Farah is in taskforce 141. So the commentator is very incorrect there.

Call of Duty Cover Art Reviewed: MWII and MWIII - Part 3

As Call of Duty continues it legacy of awe inspiring and artful design, I must contiue to waste time evaluating it.

#19) Call of Duty Modern Warfare II (2022)

After last year's innovative Vanguard box art, Modern Warfare II (2022) chooses not to rock the boat and instead settles back to past trends; the character portrait close up seen with WW2 and Cold War. However, this forgoes dramatic or artsy design and embraces the unsatisfying combination of lime green and tan. Asides from the vague colour theming and odd lightning effect (over the face, for some reason) this design relies entirely on Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley’s excellent and mysterious design from Modern Warfare (2019). It gets some points for being relatively colourful but quickly loses them for being forgettable.

#20) Call of Duty Modern Warfare III (2023)

Modern Warfare III (2023) will be COD’s first direct sequel, therefore the first, perfect, opportunity for consistent branding and design... Firstly it’s ditched the stylised logo that combines the MW initials and number and instead lets the words MODERN WARFARE dominate the front in an ugly type face. As for the main image, the opportunity to highlight a different character has been missed and instead features Capt. Price, framed in a medium shot, squandering the bold choice of the close-up portrait used last year. There’s very little to say as this is just some particle effects and a vague silhouette above being a character model on a red background.
