I recently reblogged a post about Naruto and Shikamaru. They aren't childhood friends or even best friends. Sasuke will always be Naruto's best friend, and Choji is Shikamaru's best friend. However, I'm fond of Naruto and Shikamaru's friendship.

Naruto is a character who has a strong bond with Sasuke, marked by rivalry, friendship, care, sadness, happiness, and obviously love. Even his bonds with Sakura and Sai aren't easy. But his friendship with Shikamaru is different ; it's calm, with no drama. They just happened to get along during the Chunin Exams after Shikamaru witnessed Naruto's worth. I think it's also important for a character like Naruto to have this type of bond. It's probably why their dynamic works so well with readers.

They both disliked each other at the beginning and thought of each other as idiots.

Naruto introduces Team 10 as "fools" and Shikamaru as a "whining fool." Except for the "fool" part, he isn't entirely wrong in his description. But let's continue. In the Forest of Death, there are several instances where you see Shikamaru's opinion of Naruto. He thinks of him as weak and an idiot, even saying, "Just watching you pisses me off!" However, during Naruto's match against Kiba, Shikamaru's perspective shifts. He goes from thinking "he can't win" to realizing "he isn't that stupid."

That's a key moment in Shikamaru's change of mind. He doesn't really need more than that. He sees Naruto winning against Kiba and that's it.

This scene has always fascinated me. Just a few days earlier, Shikamaru probably wouldn't have visited Naruto at the hospital. Yet, he not only visits but also waits for Naruto to wake up. What changed? Nothing monumental, really. I mean, how often do you visit someone at the hospital whom you don't particularly like and stay by their bedside reading? That's never happened to me, honestly. Maybe they had an interaction we didn't see, but either way, it works. They have a friendly conversation, and unlike their time in the forest, Shikamaru answers all of Naruto's questions. It's a clear development in their relationship, and to me, it feels natural.

There are also two other interesting things to notice about them. Twice, they encounter Gaara together. The first time, they saved Lee and listened to Gaara's story. . (Did you notice that Naruto basically revealed to Gaara and Shikamaru he is himself a jinchuriki ?) The second time, they witnessed Gaara killing two guys.

I think these shared experiences are part of why Naruto trusted Shikamaru to watch their backs when he and Sakura went after Sasuke with Pakkun.

Another thing I appreciate is how Shikamaru literally observed Naruto being a "fool for Sasuke" (yes, he is, and that's okay). Shikamaru is able to discern some of the nuances in Naruto's feelings for Sasuke.

There are so many instances I could mention (though I have a limit of ten pictures): Naruto trusting Shikamaru to watch their backs at the end of the Chunin Exams, their teamwork during the Sasuke Retrieval Arc, Shikamaru visiting Naruto again at the hospital, and even in Part 2, they still have friendly conversations. For example, during their reunion, they were very happy to see each other. Naruto immediately noticed there was something between Shikamaru and Temari.

The fact that Shikamaru was the one who reassured Naruto after Jiraiya died is significant. I couldn't help but include this panel. Shikaku decided to have faith in Naruto because of Shikamaru's words. Although Naruto had destroyed all of Pain's bodies, Shikaku, as the Jonin Commander who had gone through war, could have stopped Naruto from going to see Nagato on his own. However, Shikamaru's trust in Naruto was enough to convince Shikaku.

I believe Kishimoto was already setting up Shikamaru to be Naruto's advisor for when he becomes Hokage. These panels pretty much confirm that Naruto cares about Shikamaru and that Shikamaru is destined to be Naruto's advisor.

Looking at the manga as a whole, I feel their bond progressed quite naturally. I won't lie —if Shikamaru hadn't been so popular since his introduction, he might not have shone as much. But this allowed these two characters to develop their bond in a natural way.
