god the way the way that bruce and jason as father and son have so much love for each other but their criteria for love are are so utterly incompatible, that their ways of showing that love are read as acts of violence

like having this much love and getting upset that it’s not reciprocated, without realizing that it’s just different

for jason, love means stopping at nothing to make sure his loved ones are safe and stable, including killing. if joker had killed bruce, he would’ve stopped at nothing to avenge him, so why couldn’t bruce do that same?

for bruce, killing is the one act that made him feel that most unsafe and unstable and deprived him of his parents’ love. how could he ever show love in the same way that stole it from him? how is that love? it can’t be.

for bruce, love is confronting the day of his parents’ deaths everyday for good, the most traumatic and painful memory he has, so why can’t jason confront his own death and resurrection as a way to help his father get his other dead son back? (batman and robin #20/batman and red hood)

for jason, love is knowing that pain of losing a parent, of dying, of going through something so utterly traumatic that it changes you as a person, and respecting the want to move past it, to leave it in the past. so how can bruce love him when he brought jason back to ethiopia, stopping at nothing to get damian back- a curtesy he never extended to jason, even when he did come back to life? how is that love? it can’t be.
