Anyone have any advice on how to build and maintain tension? I just read through an old story, and my tension is… nonexistent at best

We’ve all experienced that all-encompassing focus that comes from being sucked into a really great book. One that keeps you at the edge of your seat, turning the pages, desperate to know what comes next. That’s the power of tension.

Tension keeps your story tightly paced and plotted. It keeps your readers engaged and makes them desperate to read just one more chapter.

Think of tension as your story’s pulse. Sometimes it races, sometimes it stays steady, but it’s always there in the background, keeping the story alive. Without tension, even the most beautiful writing falls flat. It’s the difference between a story that people admire on its technical merits and one they can’t put down.

Essential elements to build tension

Have stakes that matter

The foundation of tension is having something meaningful at risk. Your characters must face consequences that deeply affect them or others they care about. These stakes can be physical (life or death), emotional (love or heartbreak), or psychological (sanity or madness). The key is making readers understand and feel why these consequences matter to your characters.

Without meaningful stakes, any conflict feels hollow and artificial. Even small stakes can create powerful tension if they’re personally significant to the character.

Have time pressure

Nothing builds tension like a ticking clock. Deadlines, whether literal or metaphorical, force characters to act and make decisions under pressure.

A time limit transforms every choice into a crucial moment, every delay into a potential disaster. Whether it’s defusing a bomb, reaching a loved one before they leave forever, or meeting a critical deadline, time constraints amplify existing stakes and create a sense of urgency that pulls readers through the story.

Escalating conflict

Tension grows when problems compound. Start with a manageable challenge, then gradually increase the difficulty and consequences.

Each new obstacle should build upon previous ones, creating a snowball effect that makes the situation increasingly complex. When characters solve one problem, introduce a bigger one. This layering of complications prevents the tension from plateauing and keeps readers invested in how your characters will overcome mounting adversity.

Practical techniques for building tension

In prose

Use shorter sentences and paragraphs during tense moments. Snappier sentences make for snappier reads.

Create white space on the page. You can achieve this with more dialogue, shorter paragraphs, and less expository description. White space means faster reading, giving the experience of reading certain sections more weight.

Immerse readers with sensory detail, but don’t go overboard. Be intentional and precise.

Balance action with reaction. Too much action is fatiguing, so you need to balance pacing with tension.

Use dialogue to reveal mounting pressure from the character’s own points of view.

In character development

Give characters conflicting goals. Conflict is the backbone of all good fiction, so you can’t build tension without it.

Create internal conflicts that war with external needs. What a character wants and what they need are not always aligned, which can be a great source of tension.

Develop relationships with built-in tension. These don’t have to be romantic. They could be professional disagreements, families that don’t get along, or friends who don’t always see eye to eye.

Write flawed characters that can complicate potential resolutions. Characters create their own tension, because like people, they’re not perfect.

In plot

Foreshadow and cast seeds of conflict early in the narrative.

Create multiple plot threads that intersect. A great source of tension for a reader can be waiting to see how multiple subplots will come together with the main plotline.

Build anticipation with subtext that works toward your story’s themes in subtle ways.

Drip feed information or build it into your story world seamlessly, rather than relying overly on exposition or info-dumping.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Don’t resolve conflict too quickly or easily.

Don’t provide too much exposition at once.

Don’t let characters get too comfortable. Be sure to throw some trials their way.

Don’t make the stakes too low or unclear.

Don’t be too obvious in signposting potential story outcomes. Let readers come there naturally.

Don’t rely on artificial tension by withholding important information.

Don’t resolve major tensions with deus ex machina solutions (unless plot relevant, of course).

Practical exercises for writing tension

Rewrite a scene three times, each with increasing stakes. See which version you think is the most engaging to find the perfect bland of tension and pacing that works for your style.

Practice writing dialogue where characters want opposing things. Write two versions. One, in which they come to an agreement, and another in which they remain in opposition.

Map your story’s tension on a graph to identify flat spots. Is there too much tension leading to flat pacing? Or do you need more? Where do you think you can cut down or build up the tension?

Building and maintaining tension, like any writing skill, is one that improves with practice. Remember that tension doesn’t mean constant high drama. It’s about creating and sustaining reader investment in your story and its outcome.

The key is to make tension serve your story rather than overshadow it. When done well, tension becomes the invisible force that pulls readers through your narrative, making them care deeply about your characters and their journey.

Hello there, I am new to this platform. I am so happy I found your blog. I love the way you write and tackle different topics in regard to Jikook. I also appreciate how you never put any other members down just to prove your point.

I started out as a Taekooker, and that was because I spent most of my time on tiktok, Instagram, and YouTube. I had no idea that what I was watching was heavily edited stuff, and most of the edits even Incude fake text. Stuff that neither Tae nor Jungkook even said. I was so convinced the edits were real. Then, somehow, I stumbled upon jikook videos. My stomach sank, there was something, I felt something but I couldn't explain it. It was a gut feeling. I, however, didn't want to admit Jikook was real. So I gave up on shipping all together. Then, one day, I stumbled upon a Jikook analysis on YT. Then GFC in Tokyo. That was a done deal for me. I went back to the edited videos of Taekook, researched original content, and realized it's all been lies. On that day, I gave up Taekook, and don't get me wrong. I love their friendship. I just gave up on the possibility of them being a couple. But after GCF in Tokyo, Saipan, and Are you sure (this is just to name a few). There is plenty of evidence pointing at them as the real deal. I 1000% believe Jikook is the real couple.

Many fans were first introduced to shipping through heavily manipulated videos shared on YouTube and other platforms by Taekookers. When new fans join the fandom, they often turn to YouTube to learn more about the members, and the algorithm is very effective at pushing Taekook edits their way, making them hard to avoid. While Taekookers may lack in many areas, they excel at editing videos to push a particular narrative.

For years, Taekookers relied on those tactics to sustain their theories, even when there was little to no interaction between Taehyung and Jungkook. Ironically, they now claim to hate (or pretend to hate) company content, yet for years, company content was the only way they could see Taekook interact. They would overanalyze and sensationalize every small interaction captured in official content because they had no other material to work with. The solo era atleast for the first time helped them take a little break from making up numerous outings and sightings of Taekook lol.

Taekookers are also master storytellers. They skillfully weave angst into their narratives, as it seems to resonate deeply with their audience. Their recurring theme often portrays two helpless individuals, deeply in love but trapped in a homophobic society, suppressed by a company intent on keeping them apart. One of them, they claim, is forced into unwanted fanservice with another member, while the other suffers silently, watching in pain. Stories like these evoke strong emotions, draw people in, and create a sense of duty to “support their love.” Many Taekookers are simply misguided, and those who direct their hatred at Jimin often do so because they genuinely believe he is an obstacle or even malicious….beliefs fueled by manipulative YouTube videos and the indoctrination of their “cult leaders.”

When people describe Taekookers as cult-like, they’re not exaggerating. Many behave as though they’ve been brainwashed. Whenever an outsider or even a BTS member says or does something that could challenge the reality of Taekook, they immediately create excuses, even going as far as calling them liars. What’s most baffling is that none of them seem to step back and question these contradictions. For instance, the entire Taekooker community firmly believes that, in documentaries showing moments when Jungkook was ill or injured, the company deliberately prevented Taehyung from being by his side and instead sent Jimin to “feed shippers.” They genuinely believe this and even provide so-called “proof.” It’s remarkable how quickly they come up with new ways to reinforce their beliefs, even twisting narratives or calling Tae and Jungkook themselves liars when their version of events doesn’t align. This is how they’ve coped for years, and much of it stems from YouTube and manipulated edits.

In contrast, those who believe there may be something more between Jimin and Jungkook tend to approach things more logically. And I’m not saying this just because I’m a Jikooker. Taekook is easy to fall into. Their interactions are light, straightforward, and wholesome…there’s nothing particularly complex about them (beyond the complications added by shippers). Their behavior doesn’t align with the dramatic, secretive love story Taekookers promote. There’s no visible panic, hesitation, or anything that suggests they’re hiding something. Taekook’s dynamic is effortless, which is one of the main reasons I’ve never believed there was anything romantic between them.

Jikook, on the other hand, is far more nuanced and layered. Their interactions are filled with complexities and subtleties that require experience and logical thinking to fully grasp. When you consider their circumstances and everything they’ve likely endured over the years, their dynamic and actions make so much sense. It feels deeper and more meaningful. Personally, while I’m not 100% certain that Jikook are a couple, I’m certain their relationship..whatever it may be, hasn’t always been purely platonic.

Charlie Hazbin done better before?

The pilot in the first minute has her, in her own words let us know she is a dreamer, she outlines her viewpoints and objective clearly, lets us know she's been trying, she gets dismissed and she ask if the problem was the world or her.

We see in visuals that she has various superiors to outclassed her.

It is obvious as to why she has to take her plans to her target audience which is the commoner and start from scratch, because what good is being born into power if you can't use it?

Again, we are just at the start.

Charlie went to the media with her pitch, we would see that she isn't well known to the public and those who know mwhi she is don't care. We see that she is unprepared, unprofessional and not assertive, she quickly becomes a laughing stock.

Charlie was excited to announce she had the famous Angeldust on side which she managed through bribery, she was happy to boast that he was in the way to being one of her success stories, which backfires in her face immediately as he just made the choice to participated in a turf war going on at that moment for no particular reason. This turf war which immediately followed the cleanse.

Nobody has anything to lose, they're use to what they have, plenty seem comfortable with and are able to gain from death and destruction, so why would trust in pushover Charlie's words that she 'beleives' they're better than they are and can move on up to sit with those who wipe them out like vermin? Because that's what everyone even wants?

It's understandable that she would get used for her hotel, the hotel itself becoming the solution and the problem.

Charlie's mother is too busy for her and her dad is disappointed in her decision making, the only words of advice we hear Charlie echo from him are to not take shit from any demon. We know she's a pushover. She's out on her own, trying and feeling increasingly defeated.

Vaggie is sensible, she tries to prevent Charlie humiliating herself and making dangerous decisions that effect everyone but Charlie is going to do as she pleases regardless, she knows this. This could prove a great example of their class and power divide, unlike those she mixes with, Charlie is hellborn powerful princess, bad reputation is hurtful and nothing more and she doesn't fear for her life.

A pampered princess from a functional supportive family who didn't have to endure earthly hardships and demise.

Now remember, the pilot may not be canon.

The first four minutes of episode one pit Charlie pretty low in establishing and fleshing out her parents, her charismatic mother who rose to power but is now a missing person a dad who was born into grandeur but faced many issues who is depressed somewhere, then Charlie came to be, she hasn't done any of the greatness expected of her for no other reason than she's their offspring and petty disrespect to her face is welcome from randos she hangs out with who haven't really been introduced and don't particularly like one another.

The groundwork is done, the unflattering advert has been released to nobody in particular and Charlie has her group of various acquaintances, there's no chemistry, the only one we can really class as a friend is Vaggie who speaks up for her in defense. Why are they all together? Anyone who watched the pilot knows.

Now she's out to save sinners and not just help any demon which the pilot left open for us, but just as her clientele narrows, we meet Adam, the ancestor of sinners, an unreasonable dudebro who outclasses her.

Most characters outclassed her on the attention front, her plot vanishes into one of many subplots immediately.

The Charlie we had was idealistic, caring, enthusiastic, driven and hardworking all in her own right, pushing her own thing, but she was far from oblivious to the challenges she faced which were getting everybody in the room to listen and guiding troubled folk to change their ways. Obstacles faced with rehab.

This Charlie, antichrist chosen one fulfilling her destiny, is just there, somewhere at back.

It may be early days technically but still, the pilot and the first four episodes of Helluva proved things can move along quickly and coherently.

We are expected to take what we remember of the pilot with us as a shortcut to knowing these characters, 'canon' or not.

One day, you were assigned a critical mission that involved intercepting highly classified information related to a sinister global organization known as "The Black Lotus." This organization was notorious for its involvement in illegal arms trade, human trafficking, and acts of terrorism.

The intel you received indicated that The Black Lotus was about to finalize a deal with a rogue nation, supplying them with advanced weaponry and technology. If the deal went through, it could destabilize the delicate balance of power in the region, putting countless innocent lives at risk.

To prevent this catastrophic event, your mission objectives were twofold:

1. Infiltrate the High-Security Facility: Jihyo, being a master of disguise and stealth, was tasked with infiltrating the heavily fortified headquarters of a Black Lotus subsidiary. "Jihyo, the security protocols are more complicated than we thought," you said, your voice tense with concern. "Be careful. There's a patrol headed your way."

"I see them," Jihyo replied, her breath quickening. "I'll find another route. Just keep guiding me."

Your heart raced as you navigated her through the labyrinthine hallways. Then, the unexpected happened – an alarm blared, and chaos ensued.

"Damn it!" Jihyo's voice was urgent. "I tripped an alarm. They're on high alert now."

"Don't panic," you said, trying to steady your own nerves. "Take cover, and I'll guide you through. You've trained for this."

Ducking into a nearby supply room, Jihyo's mind raced as she planned her next move. The adrenaline coursing through her veins sharpened her focus, and she peered through the cracked door to assess the situation.

The guards, armed with high-tech weaponry, spread out to sweep the area. Jihyo's heart sank as she realized the extent of the challenge before her. She knew that taking them down quietly would be nearly impossible, and she had no choice but to engage in a full-blown confrontation.

"Get ready, Jihyo. They're closing in," you warned, your voice a lifeline in the chaos.

With swift and calculated movements, Jihyo sprung into action. She leaped out of the supply room, surprising the guards with her agility. Before they could react, she disarmed the closest one with a well-timed kick, sending his weapon clattering to the floor.

However, the element of surprise only bought her a moment. The remaining guards opened fire, forcing Jihyo to take cover behind nearby crates. Bullets ricocheted off metal surfaces, and she knew she had to act quickly.

"Look for any advantage in the environment," you suggested, analyzing the situation from the surveillance cameras. "There's a storage unit on your right. See if there's anything you can use."

Jihyo's eyes darted around, and she spotted a rack of pipes and metal rods nearby. Taking a deep breath, she lunged toward them, her agility and combat skills allowing her to evade the onslaught of bullets. She grabbed a metal rod, using it as both a shield and a weapon. 

With newfound determination, Jihyo sprang from behind cover, deflecting bullets with the metal rod as she closed the distance between herself and the guards. With precise strikes, she incapacitated two of them, leaving the rest scrambling to regain their composure. 

But one guard managed to get a clean shot, and a bullet grazed Jihyo's arm, causing her to wince in pain. However, she gritted her teeth and fought through the injury, knowing that time was of the essence.

"Jihyo, you're injured. G-get to cover," you urged, voice strained but your concern palpable. 

Ignoring the pain, Jihyo pressed forward, taking down the remaining guards one by one. With sheer determination, she cleared a path to the central computer system, but the struggle had taken its toll. As she initiated the data download, her injured arm trembled with exhaustion. Despite the pain, she refused to give in. The encrypted data was her prize, a testament to her unwavering dedication and the strength of your partnership. 

 "Y/N, I have the data," Jihyo breathed out, her voice pained from her wounds. "I'm heading to the rendezvous point." She awaited your acknowledgment but didn’t receive anything in return. Even in her weakened state, Jihyo started to panic, rushing to the extraction point to find you.

As Jihyo fought her way through the intensified security, you remained focused on providing real-time analysis and support. The pressure to guide her safely through the facility weighed heavily on your shoulders. In your determination to ensure her success, you inadvertently neglected your own well-being. As she faced an onslaught of guards, you fought with your mind, utilizing your combat knowledge and quick thinking to guide Jihyo as best as you could.

Unbeknownst to you, The Black Lotus guards detected your presence within their facility. Recognizing the threat you posed, they quickly surrounded you, outnumbering you by far. Armed and highly skilled, they launched a coordinated attack, making it difficult for you to defend yourself and help Jihyo.

Despite your valiant efforts, the odds were stacked against you. You managed to take down a few guards, but fatigue began to set in, and your movements slowed. A powerful blow to your side left you staggering, and another struck you on the back of your head, causing your vision to blur. With every ounce of strength, you tried to fight back, but the guards were unrelenting. In a final, desperate attempt to protect yourself, you swung wildly, but a skilled adversary managed to deliver a decisive blow, knocking you unconscious.

With a trembling hand, she activated the communication device to call for backup and medical assistance. Her voice was steady, but it quivered with an underlying layer of distress.

"This is Jihyo. We have an emergency at the rendezvous point. I need immediate medical assistance. Hurry!"

As she waited for help to arrive, she refused to leave your side. Gently, she brushed a strand of hair away from your face and spoke softly, as if her voice could somehow reach your unconscious mind.

"Don't worry, my love. Help is on the way," she said, her voice choked with emotion. "I won't leave you. You mean everything to me, and I promise to keep you safe."

Finally, the sound of approaching footsteps and the arrival of medical personnel filled the air. Jihyo stepped aside, allowing the medical team to take over. She watched anxiously as they carefully assessed your injuries and worked swiftly to stabilize you.

"I'm sorry," Jihyo said to the medical team, her voice heavy with guilt. "I should have been more cautious. It's my fault he's hurt."

One of the medics placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "We'll do our best to take care of them. You did what you could, and they’re in good hands now."

As they prepared to transport you to the hospital, Jihyo insisted on accompanying you. She couldn't bear to be separated from you, even for a moment.

In the hospital, Jihyo never left your side. She held your hand tightly, silently praying for your recovery. Her mind was filled with regrets and promises to never let anything like this happen again.

"I love you," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I can't lose you, not like this. Please, wake up."

As the days passed with you unconscious in the hospital, Jihyo remained by your side, consumed by worry and love. She hardly ate or slept, her focus entirely on your well-being. Her appetite vanished, and her nights were spent restlessly, unable to find solace without you awake and by her side. Her dedication to your recovery was unwavering, and she refused to leave the hospital room, knowing that her presence might be the anchor that brought you back to consciousness. Jihyo's determination to be there for you, regardless of her own needs, was a testament to the depth of her love and the unbreakable bond between you.

As you slowly regained consciousness in the hospital bed, you noticed tears streaming down Jihyo's cheeks. She looked both relieved and distraught at the same time.

She looked into your eyes, her own filled with emotion. "But I promised to keep you safe," she said, her voice breaking. "I love you so much, and I never want to see you hurt like this again." 

You smiled weakly, your heart swelling with love for her. "You being here now, by my side, is all that matters," you said, squeezing her hand gently. "We'll get through this together. I love you too, and I know that with you here, everything will be okay." 

In that moment, you found solace in each other's presence, knowing that your love and support were the pillars that would help you overcome any obstacle that came your way.

One of the main reasons I’m Team Elucien is because of my strong support for Elain.

When I imagine the possible outcomes of Azriel and Elain being together, I find them filled with heartbreak. There doesn't seem to be a happy ending for these two, and if there is, it would likely be short-lived.

I gave my reasonings why it's likely highly unlikely Elucien's bond is fake so here are my reasons why Elriel won't work in the long-term

Situation A: Azriel will never have a mating bond of his own. Elain is forever drawn to Lucien in some way, and she will fight against this bond.

This situation is undeniably heartbreaking for Azriel, who has never experienced such a profound love and likely never will. Elain will never be wholly his, and the weight of that reality is a heavy burden. While some may mention that Rhys has mentioned the possibility of rejecting the bond, they often overlook the fact that her bond will forever remain connected to Lucien. Whether they like it or not, she is inexorably linked to him.

Azriel is already plagued by insecurity, and Elain would need to be particularly cautious to ensure his emotional well-being. Even a fleeting glance toward Lucien could trigger turmoil for Azriel. The future raises questions: Will Lucien be compelled to leave the Night Court as their emissary? Or will Elain be forced to be less involved in the Night Court's affairs, given Lucien's numerous responsibilities there?

Situation B: Azriel does have a bond with someone else. Considering how instant that pull was and his savior complex, can you honestly tell me he'll resist it?

Lucien has compelling reasons not to want the bond, but he couldn't prevent himself from wanting to protect Elain. Cassian, despite his initial aversion to Nesta's actions toward Feyre, found himself irresistibly drawn to her even before the bond had been revealed. Rhys would have undoubtedly rejected his bond with Feyre if it meant her happiness could be with Tamlin.

Now Azriel leaves Elain, and all she has is an echo of the bond she chose to sever. She's abandoned yet a second time due to circumstances beyond her control. She didn't choose to become Fae any more than she chose not to be mated to Azriel.

Situation C: Azriel does ask his mate to reject the bond so he can be with Elain.

Now Elain would have to weather the inevitable rage that Azriel will undoubtedly feel from the moment his mate rejects the bond till Gods know how long. Keep in mind that he has a temper so she will finally witness that side of him. Eventually, he may calm down, but then they'll spend the rest of their lives forever attached to other people, fighting their basic instincts just to stay together.

Situation D: It turns out that Elain is his mate (a plot twist by SJM).

Azriel now has justification to kill Lucien because Lucien is a threat to Azriel's mating bond with Elain. Elain, who begged them not to hurt Graysen even when justified, will not be happy, to say the least.

It's also no secret that Azriel doesn't like Lucien and that was established before it was shown he liked Elain.

Unless Azriel is also mated to Lucien, forming a trio with Az-Lucien-Elain, I can't envision a scenario where one is mated to one but not the others. I also wouldn’t understand why Az’s bond towards Elain and Lucien would be delayed. It would have snapped the same time for him during Hybern. Unfortunately, that possibility seems unlikely. Unfortunately.

Azriel's deep aversion to the idea of Lucien as Elain's mate presents a significant obstacle, as he is currently closed off to accepting it. This resistance adds complexity to the situation, making any positive resolution or relationship dynamics challenging to achieve.

Certainly, if Azriel were to choose to pursue a romantic relationship with Elain, it's likely he would face significant challenges and lack support from several key individuals in the Inner Circle. Rhysand, Cassian, and Feyre might not be supportive, given their own journeys in securing acceptance of their bonds to their respective mates.

Cassian, in particular, may have reservations, considering his longstanding role as a buffer between Azriel and Mor. This dynamic could create complex and tense interpersonal dynamics within the group if Azriel were to pursue a relationship with Elain.

So, yes, I'm Team Elucien because, in the end, all roads seem to lead back to Lucien for Elain.

He is often placed in the back row by his parents, but is always ready to move up when he needs too. The truth is his parents try to prevent this because they are worried for their son's "suicidal tendencies". He is considered to be the "wild card" on the team due to his ability, which can either help or hinder him and his family.

And in the chance that he can't protect her, he makes the offender pay tenfold for laying their hands on her.

Zakari to Kai is his adoptive son whom he loves despite the two of them not being at all related. At first, Kai was a bit worried about raising a child, not only because the two of them were only 12 years apart in age, but also because he knew next to nothing about being a father, due to not having one in his life. Kai to Zakari is the man whom he owes his life to for rescuing him from the streets when he was just a teen. After meeting him one day whilst taking a walk around Minato, Kai invited the young kid out for lunch, with the two of them talking about their lives up to that point. It's unknown what influenced Kai to adopt the young man, and what influenced Zakari to accept. But the young teenager agreed, and from that day forward, the two have been as close as friends and brothers while maintaining a loving and respectful relationship with each other.

Though Zakari does have love for Kai all that he's done, a part of him is worried that the highly acclaimed DJ may be subconsciously taking the place of his actual father. The adult high schooler has yet to tell Kai about his past, but he is thankful to him all the same for not forcing him to reveal it. As stated, the two have a very good relationship, which extends to the D.R.B. In Rap Battles, Zakari obeys Kai, waiting for his orders. When the time comes to attack, the two put their love of music and risk together to make a highly effective duo.

Mireya to Zakari is the woman whom he believes his birth mother was like. Though Zakari truly loved his father and is grateful to him for raising him up until his unfortunate death, the one thing the young adult greatly disliked was the fact that there was no 'mother' figure in his childhood. With his mother sadly passing away during his birth, Zakari had no one to give him any motherly affection when he needed it. It's for that reason he's grateful to Mireya for being the mom he never had and always wanted.

After hearing from Kai that she is unable to have children, Zakari, at first, felt a bit betrayed feeling that he was just a substitute. It was only after he and Mireya had a serious talk that Zakari realized that Mireya really does love and care for him. They now function fully as mother and child. And though there are some differences they often have to work out, they do consider each other family. In Rap Battles, Zakari obeys her like he does with Kai. As two people that follow a trait of 'no risk, no reward', they often band together to use big moves against their opponents.

OFMD Spiral Parallels 31: Manipulative Pirate Buddies 2

Intro: What I love most about how season 2 builds on season 1 of OFMD is the spiral narrative structure. Ground is repeatedly and explicitly re-trod from season 1 to season 2, but in season 2 everything goes deeper than season 1. Symbols appear and reappear, transformed. Meanings are shuffled, emotions are stronger and truer, and transformation is showcased above everything. The first season plucks certain notes, then the second season plucks the same ones--but louder, and then it weaves them together to create a symphony.

In the first episode, Jack is the guest of Stede and Ed--and he's an aggressive and unwelcome disruptive force. He displaces Stede, inserts himself between Ed and Stede, and carelessly talks over both men. He's a whirlwind and he's here for a reason. More importantly, Stede's mildness and Ed's past relationship with Jack mean that both play right into the bastard's hands. Stede just gets himself another chair, and Ed follows all of Jack's conversational leads, isolating Stede. The past here is an antagonistic force, preventing communication and bringing up embedded insecurities.

Jack’s past stories are asserted without challenge to their completeness, lead to a conclusion that is flat (“Ugly profession”) and get in the way of communication between Ed and Stede.

But when Stede and Ed are the guests, Anne and Mary actually provide space for them to talk. Jack's actions force Ed and Stede into corners, but Anne's and Mary's pull everything out of the corners.

Jack easily controlled the first conversation, sidelining Stede and implicitly undermining the entire relationship between Stede and Ed. But when Stede and Ed tell their past story, they challenge each other and come to a conclusion that is itself a communication. The meaning of this past isn’t flat and dead, it’s complex and unsettled. The first scene is ordered, with one character asserting dominance over the others. The second scene is chaotic—as Anne and Mary hoped it would be.

That being said, the conflict between Ed and Stede in as they talk in the second episode actually highlights how much they've progressed since the first. In "We Gull Way Back," Stede and Ed don't really communicate about each other until almost the very end of Jack's visit, when they've both gotten so entrenched in certain ideas that they can't really hear each other. They just talk about Jack, about how the past will affect the present. But in the second season, they actually talk about things, negotiate the meaning of the past and present right there and then.

The conversation scenes both point to the central dramatic question of the episode. In the first episode, the drama centers around the simple premise of whether Jack will successfully break Stede and Ed up. In the second episode, the drama is around the complex premise of whether Ed and Stede will manage to get back together.

The obstacles to that are internal, not external: Stede has been idealizing the past, imagining that true love will conquer all the problems that arose in that past, and he has to let go of that.

Ed has to overcome the anger that has covered his hurt, and he has to let go of the fear that he can’t trust Stede anymore. Jack is a past that must be overcome and discarded, but Ed and Stede to each other are now a past that must be both overcome and accepted.

SUFFERING and DIFFERENT BEAST: I'll include these together since one takes place right after the other. So, the SEIRENES (Σειρηνες), or Sirens, were the half-bird daughters of the god AKHELOIOS (Αχελωιος) and—according to Euripides and Apollonius—the handmaids of Persephone. Later Roman sources would add that their current form is either a curse as a result of them failing to prevent the abduction of their lady or a blessing after they prayed to help find her.

In The Odyssey specifically, Kirke warns Odysseus of them before they set out again and instructs him and his men to cover their ears with wax in order to block out their hypnotic voices, but that if Odysseus wishes to hear them, the crew must bind him to the mast, something they end up doing upon encountering the Sirens, who tell Odysseus:

"Odysseus! Come here! You are well-known from many stories! Glory of the Greeks! Now stop your ship and listen to our voices. All those who pass this way hear honeyed song, poured from our mouths. The music brings them joy, and they go on their way with greater knowledge, since we know everything the Greeks and Trojans suffered in Troy, by gods’ will; and we know whatever happens anywhere on earth."

Odysseus manages to fall under their spell, but despite his protests, his men refuse to release him from his bindings—Eurulokhos and PERIMEDES (Περιμήδης) even tighten them—and they all manage to get past the Sirens safely.

SCYLLA: As is the case for many other myths, the parentage of SKYLLA (Σκυλλα) depends on the telling, though many works—including The Odyssey—mention her as being a daughter of KRATAIIS (Κράταιις), also known as KETO (Κητω). As mentioned before, later Roman sources would go on to say that her monstrous form is a result of a curse put on her by Circe after the goddess grew jealous of her. However, others say she was cursed by AMPHITRITE (Ἀμφιτρίτη) for being loved by Poseidon. Besides Odysseus (who lost six of his men to her after following Kirke's advice), she also proved to be an obstacle for the Argonauts and later AENEAS before being slain by Herakles.

MUTINY and THUNDER BRINGER: Eurulokhos challenges Odysseus about letting them rest when they reach another island—Thrinacia—and though the latter quickly yields to him, he also makes them swear an oath against eating the animals and to eat only the food Kirke gave them, for the cattle and sheep are sacred to the Sun god Helios. However, due to a storm trapping them on the island, supplies depletes. To fight off hunger, they initially try fishing and catching birds, but after Odysseus goes off to pray, the men decide to break the oath and kill the cows at Eurulokhos' encouragement. Helios' daughter LAMPETIE (Λαμπετιη) informs her father of the act and the Sun god then asks ZEUS (Ζευς) to punish the men; after six days of feasting, the king of the gods kills the remaining crew on the seventh with a thunderstorm, leaving only Odysseus alive.

Peter and (Y/n) exchanged a determined glance, their shared sense of responsibility shining through. They were ready to face any challenge and protect the city they loved.

Miguel continued, outlining the details of the mission and the roles each of them would play. The plan involved infiltrating the organization's hideout, gathering vital information, and disabling the weapon before it could cause harm.

Today's Manga Is: A Love Too Captivating

This story is NOT "too captivating." It is boring. The whole concept of a romance between a delinquent-with-a-heart-of-gold and a normal person who persistently loves them has been done many times before, and this does not add anything original or interesting to that formula. It's easier to scratch the itch for opposites-attract romance with something like When The Chameleon Flowers Bloom (which is not a romance, or even slightly shippy) than something like this.

Which might have been fine for a one-shot! IF this series actually had an idea about a) what's driving the non-delinquent guy to stalk harass relentlessly pursue the delinquent guy; and b) what's driving the delinquent guy to conclude he's not safe for other people to be around. But between Chapter 1 and Chapter 6 (when it stopped being free to read), there are only tiny hints of what's going on with the delinquent guy. And these hints are fairly vague, and allude to pretty generic backstory (neglectful, abusive parents; bullies beating up his former friend).

Obviously, this series is looking to be more of a slow-burn romance; but that approach doesn't work here because -- as was the case with A Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity and Having an Idol-Loving Boyfriend Is The Best -- there just aren't enough real obstacles preventing the couple from getting together here. The only real obstacles are that a) the leads aren't necessarily aware they're interested in other guys romantically, and b) the one delinquent guy is hardcore self-loathing. Focusing a bit more on the "normal" guy would help a lot here, since as In So Deep It's Love Already and And Yet, You Are So Sweet demonstrate, the more interesting character of the two (in theory, anyway) isn't the delinquent. It's the freak ass normal person who decided they gotta be besties with a social pariah after interacting with them exactly once.

The art is serviceable, and nice in the close-ups, but there's no effort to depict anything other than one particular flavor of good looking young guy. There's not a lot that gets depicted other than the main characters, and those guys look pretty much the same, save for their hair colors. True, the delinquent guy also has earrings, two moles under his eye, and is slightly shorter than the other guy... but otherwise they have the same faces shapes, body types, and hair styles. So it's hard to figure out who is who at a glance -- especially when the delinquent guy starts showing his emotionally vulnerable side (and the non-delinquent guy starts acting like a typical shojo nonthreatening male lead Cool Guy), because then even their expressions start to look alike.
