Good morning babes, time for angst

So y'all know that one episode of Justice League Unlimited, "Kid Stuff", right? Where Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Latern (John Stewart) got turned into kids by Morgan Le Fey to defeat her son, Mordred. At the end of the episode, Batman says, "I haven't been a kid since I was eight years old."

Think about that. Now. Think of Billy Batson, AKA, Captain Marvel (Shazam), the secret child superhero who's been losing his childhood thanks to being the Champion of Magic. The age where he starts being Captain Marvel varies, but imagine if he got his powers at only eight years old.

Imagine Billy becoming a member of the Justice League only a few months later, and being a superhero for years. His coworkers were none the wiser, not even Batman.

Billy having so much responsibility and the weight of the magical world on his shoulders from a very young age, and he's never once had someone help him or asked for help (besides the Wizard and Tawny). He's encountered so many dangerous threats and attacks on his life, both as Captain Marvel and ad Billy, but continues to fight everyday for the sake of everyone else. He loves his city, his friends, and the people that will never know him. He's truly pure of heart.

Now. Imagine an accident happening years later when Billy is like 15 years old, where his age gets revealed to the league and everything is in chaos. Members are confused, upset, angry, shocked, but most of all, they just don't know what to think. An important member of the league has been revealed to be a kid this entire time in secret, hiding it from them for so long.

A meeting is immediately held and Captain Marvel is forced to attend not as Captain Marvel, but as Billy Batson. The chair and tables feel so much higher than before to him, but he sits down at his regular seat and looks at everyone in the eyes. They argue, question him about everything, but Billy is surprisingly calm and mature about everything. He shouldn't be this mature. He'd still a kid, someone says.

"I haven't been a kid since I was eight years old." A sentence that gives Batman chills. Billy hasn't been a kid in so long, and neither has he.

He never knew it before, but they were so alike this whole time. Opposite on the spectrum, but still the same. Two sides of one coin are still made of the same material.

Maybe that was why Batman speaks up for Billy after that, and stands up for him to continue being a league member.

sometimes, i stand in front of the mirror before getting in the shower and i just think 'god. this body is so beautiful.'

i haven't always thought so. there have been innumerable times where i looked and wondered whose face that could possibly be, because i was sure it wasn't mine.

my hair was too frizzy, sometimes, my shoulders too wide, my head too small. why did my stomach move like that, stick out above my waistband and ruin the line of my body.

there have been late nights where i would stare at the ceiling while i showered, desperate to be clean and just as desperate not to live inside this skin. dressing rooms of stores where the waistband wouldn't fit past my thighs. coats pulled on in a rush after a long summer of sitting in storage that no longer fit.

other times, where my favorite pair of jeans were suddenly too big, where shirts and dresses hung loose and strange.

i don't know if that will happen again. bodies change and we don't get to control how.

but for now.

i stand in front of the mirror.

the rolls on my back are the same ones my mother had. when we were very small and would ask about her body, she told us that she loved her body, because it had made us.

the crinkle of my eyes is mirrored in my brother and the way he laughs, high spirited and so very carefree with every emotion.

the way my chin textures and my eyes puff up when i cry is something i share with my sister, so i always know exactly how upset she is.

my stomach is soft and round. when i was smaller, and still, sometimes, when i get the chance, i curl up to my father on the sofa, leaning into his side while i read or play on my phone. his belly is big and soft and when i listen i can hear his heartbeat.

i have never had defined muscles. i can do thirty push ups in a row and take the groceries up one trip, but you cannot see it in the shape of my arms. not in my aunt's either, but when i was young i changed her contact name to 'nice hugs' because she gave the best ones.

my body is a patchwork quilt of the people i love, the people they loved, and every part of it has been loved and cared for and cherished before i had it. eyebrows and ears and fingers and rolls and folds and skin and fat and bone–there have been countless people who looked at these things and thought 'that's beautiful. this person i love is so, so beautiful.'

it is my body, but it has belonged to others before me and it is made up of so much love and care that it seeps out of my skin, like a tangible thing able to sink into the thoughts of too much and too little and not right and burst them apart from the inside out.

bodies come in all shapes and sizes. this is what i was told when i was young, whenever i asked. they are beautiful for that, but most of all they just exist. they can't be wrong. the truth is not wrong and it is not right–it simply exists.

they have been doing that since before anyone can remember. they will do that long after i am dead and gone. and along the way they will be loved, and i want to be the one doing some of the loving.

what kinds of physical traits do you think aplysias would have? for context they look a little different from other sea slugs/hares--like a thin crepe that got folded on itself and i have no idea how that would translate into a humanoid oc

Hell yeah!! I've been told that spiders make little blobs and fill them with eggs as a nest kind of thing. Are there any that make like... Burrows or something? Or egg blobs that don't look like just blobs? Or some that make really funky webs? I'm arachnophobic so I don't have the balls to look it up myself :( Love looking at spider webs though. Some of the places they get built are absurd it's really interesting! And pretty when it rains!

And how are Petunia and Toe? They good?

Oh!! absolutely!

Yeah so the blobs you mentioned are the egg sacs, I could be wrong but I believe all spiders form egg sacs of some kind, either tightly wrapped and bundled to protect their eggs, or just loosely to keep the eggs together.

Now i'm gonna go on a bit of an egg sac tangent here. This example is specifically with web-dwelling spiders like widows or other orb weavers for example, but to make their sacs they start out with making a disc-shaped section of web and then release a fluid-like sac that they release all their eggs into one by one! Once the sac is full, they can wrap it up in many layers of a protective silk to keep the eggs insulated and away from the external elements. A spider can lay hundreds of eggs at a time and with spiders like widows they may lay multiple sacs filled with eggs! In this example of widow spiders they usually keep the sacs in their web to guard them, but other species of spiders may just leave the sac somewhere obscured or hidden so the babies can hatch and grow a bit before leaving to live their own lives.

But this is far from the only way! My favourite are wolf spider mothers! These are land-dwelling spiders that, as you asked, do create burrows for themselves! Quite a lot of the land-dwelling spiders do in various ways! These wolf spiders will actually stay with their egg sacs and will adamantly guard it if a predator approaches. when the babies hatch, they will climb onto the mother's back as she continues to protect them! Such a sweet mother! There are many other arachnids that have a similar situation such as scorpions, whip-scorpions, and vinegaroons! (to name a few) Now! another popular set of burrowing land-spiders are tarantulas! and they will lay their egg sacs in their burrow where the babies will be safe to hatch! which, sidenote i gotta say those little guys are just the most adorable things ever ToT one of my favorite types of baby spider for sure! So fuzzy! And when they just barely hatch they are in an "eggs with legs" stage that is just so precious. Literally what will later become their abdomen is just an orb like the egg they just hatched out of, but they now have a litte teeny underdeveloped cephalothorax and set of legs along with it. they just sorta barely wiggle them it's so adorable (imo). However they need to be careful, a lot of baby spiders do.. as once they hatch and stay a bit too long around the mother as they grow, she may mistake them for a meal sometimes and many do sadly get eaten if they are not careful. In fact! most tarantula owners/breeders will remove the egg sac when their tarantula has one as it is also a possibility for the tarantula to eat their own egg-sac! Not sure of the reason why, but it could be to re-gain nutrients (in the most counter-productive way lol) or for some other unknown reason. I've had chickens do the same thing with their eggs :(

Anyway! But yea! there are tons of land-dwelling spiders, like funnel weavers, tarantulas, trapdoor spiders, velvet spiders, and many more that make burrows for themselves! either by digging one, or forming one solely out of their webbing, or usually a mix of both!

oh! and for jumping spiders! they also will protect their eggs and stay with their babies to protect them until they are old enough to leave on their own! Usually the mothers won't eat around this time which can be concerning from the perspective of a spider ower haha jumping spiders don't really live in webs or burrows, but they make little silk sacs and hammocks or 'hides' for themselves under leaves or in crevices somewhere that it's not too easy to spot them! It's super cool to see really! and if you feel the silk, it's super soft! Like I would genuinely think it to be so cool to be tiny and lay down in the silk because of how soft it is! My jumping spiders make these curtain-like sheets of silk inside their hides (in my spiders' case, acorn shells or little hollow round silk structures for them to feel safe and hidden) and it just looks so cool! Hold on I could probably show a picture! (no spiders in sight)

they made these specifically while they were molting, to feel safe and protected while they are exposed and vulnerable! but I have found abandoned sacs like this before and gosh they are so extremely soft! Looks so cozy!

Petunia, my widow, and Toe, one of my jumpers, are doing great! I would add a photo of them but since you mentioned being arachnophobic I best not haha! /lh They are doing well though! and my other spiders are too! Muffin recently molted again, so did Toe, but neither of them ejected their old exoskeletons from their hides so I can't collect their little hats :(

but that's ok!

I am just glad that they both molted safely!

I finally named my Habronattus tarsalis as well, (i got him a while back!) His name is Wilbur!

On a bit of a sad note, I was originally going to make a post about it but I really didn't wanna bum anybody out.. Persphone, my female barn funnel weaver, passed away about two weeks ago now... Her passing hurt me greatly.. especially since I was not even sure of what might have caused it.. But Whatever happened.. I just hope she's in a better place now.

Brometheus, my male barn funnel weaver, on the other had is still doing great! Better than ever I think! He seems super healthy right now and I am so glad!

Fred, my male black widow is also doing well!

But yeah! I currently have 6 spiders! And I love them all deeply! Petunia, my female black widow, was my first one and she resides in her enclosure right next to my bed haha 😁
