The People VS Gwen Stacy au where Miguel and Jess just picked up the Vulture and left, not stopping Captain Stacy from raising the gun toward Gwen a second time and shooting her on reflex.
Gwen bleeding out on a stretcher to an ambulance, face exposed to the world as a million cameras flash.
Gwen twisted up in the agony of her father choosing to be a cop before being someone who loves her with a bullet in her liver but a hole in her heart.

Jango Fett Open Seasons: Retreat vs. fight no matter the cost
Another detail from Jango Fett: Open Seasons that I find very telling about characters is their approach to retreat. I’m specifically want to talk about the  four major Mandalorians - Tor Vizsla, Jaster Mereel, Jango Fett and Montross as they all were at some point in the story put in situation when they needed to decide to continue fight no matter the cost (in theory the ideal Mandalorian warrior mindset) or to prioritizing their people’s life (a choice testifying to good leadership). And yes, those situations weren’t always exactly the same yet similar enough to see the implied(?) similarities in theoretical dissimilar characters.
So we have Jaster Mereel, the original leader of True Mandalorians. During a mission on Korda Six, when Mandalorians came across the enemy's heavy fire (and Jango ordered his people to find cover), Jaster gave an order to regroup at Jango’s location - the safest place and abort the air strike.
Tumblr media
And once it became clear, they made a mistake to rely on second-handed intel - but before they learned it was Death Watch's trap - Jaster decided to abort the whole mission. Something quite different from what Jango will teach his son decades later (“Your loyalty, your honor – these are the things that matter. When you accept a mission, when you give your word, it is all that matters.”)
Tumblr media
Montross however refused to regroup at Jango's location
Tumblr media
and continued the attack, stating "we've never abandoned a mission!"
Tumblr media
Montross survived thanks to Jaster who personally came to his aid only to betray his leader and leave him behind once Tor showed up. And while he tried to take command of True Mandalorians, he did order an evacuation, as the "Jaster's last order still stands" argument.
Tumblr media
Then we have Tor Vizsla who during Jango’s attack on Death Watch’s ship, ordered everyone to evacuate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now, let’s talk about Jango Fett who started very much minded like Jaster, what was the best visible on Korda Six. The mission was his first official role as Squad Commander but he didn’t allow pride or desire to make Jaster proud to take over common sense. When it became clear his men were under too strong enemy’s fire, he ordered them to get into trenches / find cover.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However on Galidraan, as a leader of True Mandalorians, when he already knew they walked again into Death Watch’s trap, instead of  de-escalate threat of the Jedi by at least trying calm down the situation and presenting what is going on behind the scene- and mind you, the Jedi did not have all facts but Fett already met Vizla at Governor's residence and as he wore helmet at that time, most likely had recorded this, not to mention all Mandalorians could present what they were doing and where they were via the recording from helmets - Fett ordered to open fire. And the Jedi naturally responded as such.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(And really, if Fett was smarter he could at least try to turn Jedi against Death Watch).
This is even more surprising choice as Jango's first reaction upon seeing Republic shuttles before even meeting eye to eye with Jedi was to call his second-in-command to order an evacuation.
Tumblr media
Which is pretty ironic, that both Jaster and Tor, despite their ideological differences, were at some point shown to prioritizing their men’s safety by ordering retreat / evacuation, while Jango started as similar minded (Korda Six and upon seeing Republic shuttles on Galidraan) but once Jedi showed up, his attitude changed into “no running, fight whatever the cost” which not only led to great tragedy but made him more like Montross.

The power struggle between the Federation and the states: A War on gender and autonomy
On February 21, 2025, a conflict recorded in the history of American politics broke out in the Oval Office of the White House - a fierce confrontation between Janet Mills, the governor of Maine, and US President Donald Trump, pushing the power game between the federal and state governments to an unprecedented climax. The core of this confrontation directly points to the executive order signed by Trump on February 5 of the same year, "prohibiting men from participating in women's sports", which requires federal agencies to reinterpret "Title IX of the Education Act Amendment" and prohibit transgender women from participating in women's sports. Maine, as one of the few states in the United States that explicitly allows transgender athletes to compete based on their gender identity, has become the frontline of this "cultural war".
Tensions: How Do Executive Orders tear Apart Legal Consensus
The executive order of the Trump administration, under the name of "protecting the fairness of women's sports", actually pressured the states through federal financial and judicial means. According to this policy, any state that allows transgender women to compete may face cuts in federal education funds or lawsuits from the Department of Justice. On February 25th, the US Department of Health and Human Services directly issued a violation notice to the state of Maine, stating that its current policy "deprives female student athletes of their rights", and demanded that the Maine Department of Education adjust the policy within 10 days, otherwise legal proceedings would be triggered.
However, Governor Mills hit back with a tough stance, accusing the federal government of "overstepping its authority to interfere in local autonomy". She publicly stated at the National Governors Association Conference: "The legislation in Maine is based on science and human rights, not political manipulation." We will not allow the federal government to deprive the citizens of this state of their dignity. This stance quickly triggered a chain reaction: civil organizations that support transgender rights, legal scholars, and even some moderate Republican lawmakers all spoke out, criticizing the Trump administration for "abusing executive power to undermine the foundation of the federal system".
The political calculations behind gender disputes
This conflict is far from being a simple dispute over sports rules. Analysts point out that Trump's executive order is one of the key strategies for consolidating the conservative base during his second term. By tying transgender issues to "traditional values", Trump attempts to continue mobilizing right-wing voters after the 2024 election while diverting public attention from controversies such as tightened immigration policies and escalating tariff wars.
However, Governor Mills' counterattack was equally full of political wisdom. As an important representative of the Democratic Party in the Northeast, she ingeniously transformed the contradiction between the federal government and the states into a "battle for the majority of state rights". At the meeting on February 21st, she cited several precedents of the Supreme Court in recent years, emphasizing that "states enjoy the autonomy granted by the Constitution in areas such as education and public health." This statement not only received support from the governors of the blue states, but even raised the vigilance of some red states regarding the expansion of federal powers - for instance, although the governor of Texas did not publicly support Maine, he privately told the media that "federal intervention needs to have a clear constitutional basis".
The survival battle of the transgender community and the broader political alliance
For the transgender community in Maine, this struggle is directly related to the right to survival. A local high school track and field athlete tearfully stated at the hearing, "Banning me from competing is tantamount to declaring that society does not recognize my female identity." The heavy blow from the federal government is more likely to destroy the gender inclusion system that the state has built over a decade - from school locker room allocation to scholarship eligibility, the rights of transgender people will be completely regressed.
But Mills' strategy goes far beyond this. In her recent speech, she called for: "All groups that have suffered losses due to the federal New Deal - whether they are farmers squeezed by immigration quotas or small business owners who have lost export orders due to the tariff war - should join this battle to defend state rights." This call directly points to the multiple policy weaknesses of the Trump administration: the immigration austerity under the pretext of "national security" has led to a shortage of agricultural labor; The retaliatory imposition of tariffs on China has dealt a heavy blow to Maine's lobster export industry. By tying transgender issues to groups whose economic interests have been undermined, Mills attempts to build an ideological "anti-federalist expansion alliance".
The struggle between the judicial battlefield and public opinion trends
Legal experts predict that this case may eventually be brought to the Supreme Court. Currently, the Maine Attorney General's Office has begun preparing litigation materials. The core arguments include "the federal executive order violates the principle of state rights reservation stipulated in the Tenth Amendment of the Constitution" and "gender identity discrimination constitutes unconstitutional". It is worth noting that in the "Hogwood v. Georgia" case of 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that each state has the right to formulate its own gender-related education policies. This precedent may provide crucial legal support for Maine.
The battlefield of public opinion is equally fierce. Conservative media have portrayed transgender athletes as a threat of "physical superiority over ordinary women", while the liberal camp has refuted this with data: statistics from the National High School Athletic Association show that the participation of transgender athletes has not led to abnormal performance distribution in women's events. More subtly, the tourism industry in Maine has begun to mobilize - operators of the state's LGBTQ-friendly resorts jointly wrote a letter to the state government, warning that "a policy setback will result in economic losses of hundreds of millions of dollars".
A storm that redefines the federal system of the United States
When Governor Mills signed her name on the court documents, she was not only opposing a certain policy of the Trump administration, but also an ultimate game about "who has the right to decide citizens' lives". Whether it's the tears of transgender teenagers on the track or the unsold cargo holds of lobster fishermen due to the tariff war, these seemingly unrelated pain points have all been strung together in the Maine struggle to form a common narrative against the expansion of federal power.
The outcome of this storm may reshape the federal balance that has persisted in the United States for over two hundred years - and every sound of breathing under the heavy pressure of policies could become a fulcrum that shakes history.

What are your biggest pet peeves in fics
My biggest pet peeve is, hands down, fandom’s portrayal of the first war, which is almost never portrayed as violent and terrible as the details we get about it in canon. Most importantly:
The First War started in 1970.
Not 1975 or 1976. Certainly not 1978. 1970. This means the war was raging the entire time the Marauders were at Hogwarts, and that they entered Hogwarts a year into the war. It lasted 11 whole years. The whole point is that the First War was much worse than the Second War.
I’ve seen people say things like “The Marauders era is boring because nothing really happens until their later years until the war starts and/or heats up” and say it like it’s complete fact and not something fans completely made up. The idea that the war only “heats up” after Snape’s Worst Memory is so universally accepted despite all evidence to the contrary.
(I’ve also seen claims that the only murders/war crimes committed during the first war were the few explicitly named in the text, which is, again… truly embarrassing analysis.)
The reason fandom has come up with this narrative is entirely to fit the Snape vs. Marauders “bullying” angle. It usually goes like this: Sirius and James were bullies for 5 years, until - conveniently and magically - the war started to “heat up” and get more serious 6th year or sometimes 7th year and therefore they matured (especially James, though the idea of Sirius maturing after the Prank is also common in fic). It provides a neat little coming of age arc for the Marauders, one that does not actually exist in canon.
Because, believe it or not, Voldemort was not going to adjust the trajectory of his war to fit this narrative.
On the pro-Marauders side who still see them as bullies, the fandom can’t reconcile the idea of the war being serious and the Marauders not being serious about it and instead spending their time bullying others. But the war was already heated up, and the Marauders were already serious about the war by SWM - because the Marauders attacks on Snape and others was them being serious about the war, because it wasn’t bullying, it was vigilante justice.
On the Snape fan side, to portray Snape as a victim of bullying, they have to pretend that he's the only person capable of being victimized in the whole entire wizarding world, and people actually being murdered and tortured conflicts with that narrative.
I can buy that the war took a few years to heat up, I doubt it went to daily murders and tortures immediately, but I think a war would not take 6-7 years to escalate. I would guess it heated up sometime the Marauders 2nd year or 3rd year, at latest.
(I often see so many Order deaths happening in late war, per Moody, used at evidence that the war only escalated then, but the Order is tiny and doesn’t represent the casualties in the rest of the population)
Evidence towards the fact that the war was very heated up already by the time of SWM is that Lily calls Voldemort “You Know Who” in her conversation with Snape outside the Gryffindor common room - which means that by that time Voldemort has spread enough terror that people are afraid to say his name.
Also, remember this is already a very violent society. The fact that some pureblood families murder Muggles for fun (Muggle hunting) is apparently an open secret, they murder house elves, and I’ve said before that I think pureblood society practices honor killings which are at least somewhat legally sanctioned (i.e. Merope’s situation).
So a few occasional murders is not going to shake them and is not what this society is going to consider a war.
More evidence is how much the violence has escalated at Hogwarts. Death Eater students are regularly and openly torturing students with Dark Magic "for a laugh" and not being expelled, which is something that doesn't even happen in canon era - the closest we get is Draco cursing Katie Bell by accident, during a specific secret mission, and unlike with Mulciber and Mary Macdonald, no one knows who the culprit even is, so they don’t have the option to expel him. Similarly we have Snape using Sectumsempra so often at Hogwarts that it became known as his specialty and not being expelled, despite it being a near-fatal torture curse.
This fic captures what the atmosphere at Hogwarts would’ve been like really well:
"Did that kind of thing happen a lot in Hogwarts?" Hermione asked, tone oddly flat. "In the seventies?"
“Yes," Sirius said after a long moment. "It did. There were times when it was pretty much open warfare in the halls and on the grounds, between the students everyone knew were on Voldemort's side and the ones who opposed him, or whose families did... I was talking to Pomfrey about it the other day, she says you lot get yourself hexed as often in a few months as our generation used to in a week. And people attacked pets or destroyed belongings all the time. It was one reason a lot of students hid being muggleborn."
There’s the inability to extrapolate from canon details, fandom often portraying the First War like it’s just 30 Death Eaters on one side and 20 Order members on the other.
For example, if a mere ~30 Death Eaters are already committing daily murders in HBP during the Second War, how much violence do you think an army of ~500+ DEs (Sirius says the DEs that came back in GoF is literally nothing to how large Voldemort’s armies were in the First War; Remus says the Order was outnumbered 20 to 1) was committing? Similarly, based on the statistics given in HBP (by February Ron says he’s literally lost count of how many students have lost relatives), by SWM a substantial amount of the student body would’ve had families murdered by Death Eaters (and therefore the students cheering James and Sirius on in SWM is obviously because they hate Snape for being a proto-Death Eater and not for being poor 🙄). There may have even been students themselves that were killed over breaks.
This lines up with Sirius's description of the war:
“You’re scared for yourself, and your family, and your friends. Every week, news comes of more deaths, more disappearances, more torturing... the Ministry of Magic’s in disarray, they don’t know what to do, they’re trying to keep everything hidden from the Muggles, but meanwhile, Muggles are dying too. Terror everywhere... panic... confusion... that’s how it used to be."
There are lots of similar passages about the war, I’m not going to quote all of them, but I suggest people actually pay attention to those details, as well as stuff during the Second War that would apply to the first.
The same thing applies as fandom portraying teenage Death Eaters as only joining once they graduate, when canon indicates they would be Marked at 16, but that’s for another meta. ETA: That meta is posted here.

Any advice for figuring out how to work on writing characters arguing?
I’m just curious and also I mistakenly derailed part of my writing over struggling to write a scene of characters starting an argument that was meant to escalate.
Writing Notes: Arguments
Arguing is full of tension.
Even benign conversations between friends so often belies subtextual personal agendas that are antagonistic or covertly full of anger or upset.
Honesty itself sometimes is the product of extreme tension and upset.
One’s resistance to telling the truth to another or admitting to oneself a truth can be excruciatingly tense and stressful, even between lovers.
SIDESTEPPING
You instantly create conflict in dialogue when you avoid “on the nose” responses.
On the nose means a direct response, sometimes even echoing the previous line.
You can avoid direct response:
With a statement that is unrelated to the prompting dialogue
By answering a question with a question
With a line of dialogue that is going to need some explanation
Also consider using silence:
“Are you ready to go, dear?” Bob asked. Sylvia said nothing.
Or use an action response:
“Are you ready to go, dear?” Bob asked. Sylvia picked up the mirror.
OPPOSING AGENDAS
Always know what each character wants in a given scene.
If a character in a scene is just taking up space, give him an agenda or get him out of there. Or cut the scene entirely.
Scenes require conflict or tension, even if it’s subtle.
Before you write the scene, note what each character wants.
Then spend a few moments playing with those motivations.
List 3 other possible motives for each of the characters, then mix and match to decide which ones will make for the best conflict.
It is also important to create tension among allies.
One of the danger points in fiction is when two friends, or people who are at least on the same side, have a talk about what’s going on. The trouble is there might not be any trouble between them. So much of the dialogue becomes a friendly chat.
This will violate Alfred Hitchcock’s axiom (Hitchcock once said that a good story is “life, with the dull parts taken out.”).
The fastest way to handle it is to make sure there is tension manifested from the start.
Create tension in at least one of the characters, preferably the viewpoint character.
Example: When you have Allison meeting Melissa, her college friend, for coffee, don’t have them sit down and start talking as if nothing’s wrong in the world. Put the trouble of the story into Allison’s mind and nervous system and make it an impediment to her conversation with Melissa. In Melissa, place something that might be in opposition to Allison’s needs. Allison needs to ask Melissa’s advice about a crumbling marriage. Maybe Melissa is full of news about her sister’s impending wedding to a wonderful man and gushes about the prospects.
Spend some time brainstorming about the ways two friends or allies can be at odds. Then weave those things into the dialogue.
DIALOGUE AS WEAPON
Look for places where you can use dialogue as a weapon, a means for your characters to charge ahead in order to get what they want.
Keep in mind that dialogue is action.
It’s a physical act used by characters to help them get what they want. If they don’t want anything in a scene, they shouldn’t be there.
Note that not all weapons are explosive. They can be small and sharp, too.
PARENT-ADULT-CHILD
A great tool for creating instant conflict in dialogue is the Parent-Adult-Child model, popularized in the book Games People Play by Eric Berne (1964). This school of psychology is called Transactional Analysis.
The theory holds that we tend to occupy roles in life and relationships.
The 3 primary roles are Parent, Adult, and Child (PAC):
The Parent - the seat of authority, the one who can “lay down the law.” S/he has the raw strength, from position or otherwise, to rule and then enforce his/her rulings.
The Adult - the objective one, the one who sees things rationally and is therefore the best one to analyze a situation. “Let’s be adult about this,” one might say in the midst of an argument.
The Child - not rational, and not with any real power. So what does s/he do? Reacts emotionally. Throws tantrums to try to get his/her way. Even an adult can do this. We’ve all seen clandestine videos that prove this point.
So it is a helpful thing to consider what role each character is assuming in a scene.
How do they see themselves? What is their actual role? (It may indeed be different than what they perceive it to be.)
Most important, how will they act in order to accomplish their goal in the scene?
Answering these questions can give you a way to shape your dialogue so there is constant tension and conflict throughout.
Also consider that the characters might change their roles (try something new) in order to get their way. Thus, this is a never-ending source of conflict possibilities and only takes a few moments to set up.
TIP ON DIALOGUE
Look at all of your dialogue exchanges, especially ones that run for a page or more.
Analyze what roles the characters think they’re inhabiting.
Rework the dialogue by getting each character to be more assertive in their claimed role. (Also note that a character can change roles as a matter of strategy. For example, if the Parent isn’t working, a character might switch to pouting like a Child in order to get his way.)

Lottie, Natalie, and Shauna’s Leadership Styles
(and why they all ultimately fail)
Let’s explore the stark contrast between the way Lottie, Natalie, and Shauna approach their respective reigns over the group— and how these leadership styles contribute to each of their downfalls.
Lottie: Leadership Through Faith and Hope
Tumblr media
Importantly, Lottie’s leadership is about belief rather than dominance—she doesn’t enforce authority so much as allow others to see her as a vessel for something greater. Her prominent role in the group emerges as a response to the group’s desperation, which is why they follow her so unquestionably as opposed to the way they follow Nat or Shauna later on. In a situation where survival seems impossible, Lottie’s spirituality provides something tangible: a sense of purpose, reassurance, and meaning. Her visions and rituals give the girls a structure to follow, an alternative to the chaos of hopelessness. She encourages community, group healing, connection with nature, and faith in something bigger than all of them. Lottie’s leadership works because the group wants to believe. They need a reason to endure the wilderness, and Lottie provides one.
Tumblr media
However, Lottie’s leadership spirals out of control as the group’s desperation warps faith into fanaticism. What begins as guidance and ritual to provide hope turns into blind idolatry, with the others misinterpreting her beliefs as a demand for sacrifice and blood. When their faith escalates into murder in Lottie’s name, she steps down, hoping to escape the power she never fully understood. Lottie is afraid of her own mind, she doesn’t trust herself, and therefore she doesn’t trust herself to leave the group. But even without leadership, we see this darker side of Lottie that she has been trying to push down catching up with her, and her desperation for faith in the Wilderness causes her to make some very disastrous (and violent) decisions.
Tumblr media
Natalie: Leadership Through Practicality, Fairness, and Morality
Tumblr media
Natalie’s leadership exists in direct contrast to Lottie’s. While Lottie offers belief, Natalie offers action. She hunts, provides food, and makes decisions based on logic rather than mysticism. Her leadership isn’t flashy, and it doesn’t command the same emotional devotion as Lottie’s, but it is grounded in results.
What makes Natalie’s leadership compelling is her commitment to fairness and morality. She insists on trials, fair punishments, and equality. She doesn’t manipulate others to maintain control. In a world where survival instinct is overwhelming, Natalie holds onto her ethics longer than almost anyone else. She resists Lottie’s growing influence because she recognizes the danger of blind faith, and she resists Shauna’s emotional volatility because she knows fear-driven leadership is just as dangerous. She isn’t comfortable having power over others, which is made clear by her removing the antler crown as soon as possible.
Tumblr media
Natalie excels at meeting the community’s external needs, guiding them in building shelters, farming, and organizing feasts and games—all creating the illusion of a thriving society. However, Natalie fails to address the emotional fractures beneath the surface. The group’s grief, trauma, and growing rage go largely ignored, festering beneath the routine she enforces. By focusing on the outward appearance of a thriving community, she neglects the deeper psychological toll of their situation, allowing resentment, conflicts within the group, and desperation to build until it inevitably boils over, shattering the fragile order she tried to maintain.
Her belief in fairness and morality puts her at odds with the growing ferocity of the group. Leadership in the wilderness isn’t about what’s right; it’s about what brings people together. As the group shifts toward Shauna, Nat becomes increasingly more isolated. She represents a world that no longer exists, and because of that, she is ultimately pushed out.
Tumblr media
Shauna: Leadership Through Raw Emotion
Tumblr media
Shauna’s rise as a dominant force stems from her personal suffering—the loss of Jackie, the traumatic stillbirth of her child, and the psychological toll of survival. Unlike Lottie, who offers spiritual explanations, or Natalie, who tries to maintain fairness, Shauna doesn’t seek meaning beyond her own immediate emotions. Her leadership is driven by personal pain, using acts of brutality as a means of catharsis. When she lashes out, it isn’t calculated; it’s a manifestation of bottled-up grief. This emotional volatility makes her an intense but unstable leader—capable of commanding fear and respect, yet prone to impulsive decisions.
Shauna’s shift into leadership happens because she takes what she wants, no hesitation. She takes the throne by force and leads through intimidation. The group follows Shauna because defying her means suffering. She’s not the Antler Queen in the way Lottie was—spiritual and revered—she’s something else entirely: a leader born from rage, grief, and the knowledge that kindness doesn’t keep you alive. This makes her a good fit to match the group’s rising ferocity, they need someone ruthless who is willing to get things done no matter the cost.
Tumblr media
While effective in the short term, Shauna’s reign will likely have its own downfall. Emotional, fear-based leadership breeds resentment and instability. Unlike Lottie’s faith-based following, which gives people hope, or Natalie’s fair governance, which encourages cooperation, Shauna’s rule creates fractures and fear within the group. Her reliance on brutality makes her a formidable leader, but it also isolates her. Shauna has always longed to be seen and admired the way Jackie was, but she will soon realize how hollow and insincere the loyalty surrounding her leadership truly is. She’s looking for an escape from her pain, but she will soon realize that having power over everyone does not make her feel any better— Jackie is still dead, her baby is still dead, she has scared everyone that cared about her away, and she still feels that overwhelming guilt and grief.
Tumblr media
Ultimately, Shauna’s leadership is one of survival at its most raw—devoid of ideology, fairness, or mysticism. It is a reflection of her inner turmoil, a reign of unchecked emotion, and a desperate grasp for control in an environment where control is impossible.

“Seriously? Another fight with Demi? You’re a grown adult and you can’t stay out of conflicts for five minutes?” John rants at you from across his desk. You sit in the chair across from him, feeling like a child sent to the principal's office. It’s no surprise to anybody that you and Demi had another fight; what was a surprise was the fact that you had gotten in her face and pushed her hard enough to knock her on her ass.
“It was stupid of you to escalate it like that, you do realize she could get the police involved, right? You could lose your job for this,” Kathy says, sitting next to John with her arms crossed in disappointment.
You sigh and shake your head, “Listen, I know I shouldn’t have gotten physical with her but she was being, excuse my language, a fucking cunt. The way she talks about the other counselors and about the campers is bullshit. The shit she was saying about Jason was unacceptable, she should feel lucky I didn’t slap the shit out of her instead.”
John and Kathy sigh, looking at one another before looking back at you. “We know that she isn’t exactly the nicest person all the time but you cannot get violent with her. We’re gonna talk to her too but we’re gonna have to punish you. You’re on dish duty by yourself for the rest of the week.”
You sit there slack jawed, “By myself? Jesus Christ, just fire me instead…”
Kathy snorts and shakes her head, “We could’ve done worse, just take your punishment and don’t get into a fight with her again. We really don’t wanna have to fire you.”
You groan, “Fine I’ll take it off property next time…” You get up from the chair and head out of the office to go to the mess hall where everyone else is eating breakfast.
You feel grateful they didn’t just fire you or do something like make you clean the bathroom with just a toothbrush. You push open the doors of the mess hall, heading to the empty line to grab food. “Hey! I grabbed your breakfast for you already,” Jason calls from his table. He’s sat with Claire, Shannon, Bobby, and Chris. You head over to the table, sliding into the seat next to him.
“Thanks, Jason.” He slides the tray over to you. He’s memorized your breakfast order already.
“So, how’d it go with John and Kathy?” Asks Claire, taking a sip of her orange juice.
“Better than I thought actually, I’m on dish duty by myself for the rest of the week. I mean it’s still not great but it’s way better than like getting fired I guess…”
“Wow, maybe you really are their favorite.” Claire laughs.
“Bullshit, we all know it’s Jason.”
He turns to look over at the two of you, “Hm? What about me?”
You take a bite of your toast, “You’re John and Kathy’s favorite.”
He blushes, smiling shyly. “Oh, I don’t know about that…I wouldn’t say-”
“I would. Claire, what about you, do you think Jason’s their favorite?”
She smiles and nods, “Definitely.”
Jason rolls his eyes and opens his mouth to defend himself but you grab an apple slice off his place and shove it in his mouth. “Shut up and take the compliment.” He chews obediently.
Bobby leans over from across the table, Chris and Shannon deep in a conversation of their own. “So, what did you and Demi fight over this time? Trying to decide who gets me?” He asks, cocking an eyebrow.
You roll your eyes, “Bobby I can promise no one in camp is fighting over you. Unless they’re fighting over who gets to kick your ass first.”
He glares, “Uh you don’t know that.”
“I do. I promise.”
“But seriously, what was that fight about? It had to have been pretty serious for you to have to knock her on her ass like that.”
You sigh, trying to decide the best way to explain things. “Well, Demi was talking shit about someone who didn’t deserve it so I had to put her in her place.”
He chuckles, Claire and Jason leaning in to listen to the conversation. “What’d she say that was so bad? Did she say something about me, did you defend my honor?”
“When have you ever had honor?” You roll your eyes.
“Just tell us what she said that set you off like that, c’mon don’t leave us waiting!”
You chew on the inside of your cheek, you know if you told them everything Jason would get his feelings hurt. “She said something shitty about Jason. It’s not important.”
Before anyone else can ask more questions to bell rings signaling that breakfast is over. “Looks like I’ve got shit to do, I’ll see y’all later.” You head towards the kitchen, dumping the rest of your breakfast in the trash. There’s already a stack of trays and plates waiting for your attention. You groan at the sight, grabbing an apron off the hook along with a pair of gloves. The rest of the counselors round up their campers, Kathy taking care of yours till you’re done with the dishes. You lean back against the counter and watch as everyone piles up their plates and trays as they leave for the day's activities. Jason’s last out of the mess hall, he looks over at you with a pity smile and a wave. “See you later, yeah?” He calls as he exits the mess hall.
“Don’t get your hopes up Hochberg, I might just drown myself in the sink and put myself out of my misery!” You yell back, watching with a smirk. His cargo shorts do nothing for his ass but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable to watch him walk away.
He peeks his head back in, “Don’t, please! You can’t leave me with Bobby all summer!”
“You’ll live!” You playfully blow him a kiss before he heads back outside, you can’t see it from where you stand but his cheeks turn red from your gesture.
You turn back with a sigh to face the massive pile of dishes everyone has left for you, you’re gonna be here awhile. You grab the old radio from the storage closet and turn it to a pop station to try and make things a little more bearable. You hum along to the music as you start to clean, starting with the trays first since they’re the easiest and least messy. You find yourself falling into a rhythm, now caught up in your work as you hum along with the music. You’re so caught up with it that you don’t even notice Jason slipping back into the kitchen to join you. After hearing that you’d stood up for him he couldn’t help but feel like he owed you some help as a thank you.
He slips into the mess hall, hearing the radio playing from the kitchen. You’re busy and focused on your work, it makes him happy to see that you aren’t completely miserable. He sneaks his way behind you, quickly grabbing your waist. You jump about a foot in the air and scream like you’re being murdered. Jason backs away and starts to laugh until it hurts, tears streaming down his face as you try to compose yourself. You back yourself against the sink, gripping the counter behind you as you watch him laugh.
“Is it really that funny Jason? Really?” You ask in annoyance, narrowing your eyes at him.
He slaps his knee cartoonishly, “It’s a knee slapper!”
You quickly reconsider your friendship with him. You’re convinced that the universe makes him do something cringe every ten seconds to balance out how hot he is. “You’re the worst.”
He smiles playfully, wiping the tears from his eyes. “I think I might be the best actually, I came to help you after all…buuuutttt if I’m the worst I could always just go find something else to do…” He threatens jokingly.
You spring forward and grab his wrist, “Please stay…if I can only listen to pop music all day I might go insane, a familiar face would be nice even if it comes with corny jokes.”
“You love my jokes, you always laugh.”
You roll your eyes and don’t even bother to bite back your smile, “I do…”
“Mhm, you know you do…I’ll be nice and give you some more help. I heard you stuck up for me and that’s why you’re stuck doing this, is that true?” He asks as he grabs some gloves and an apron, suiting up to help you tackle the seemingly endless pile of dishes.
You turn back to the sink, avoiding his gaze. “Yeah, uh, you don’t owe me for it or anything. I just wasn’t gonna let her talk about you like that.” You pick up a nearby dish and continue with your work.
He slides up next to you, reaching over you to grab a plate. His arm grazes your chest and your breath hitches, you feel your cheeks heat up as he pulls the plate back over to him. “Did Demi really say something bad about me? I thought we were friends…she was probably just kidding!” Jason has always been naive, bless his heart. That poor boy would apologize to the pole he ran into.
Tumblr media
You remember arriving at camp at the beginning of the summer and seeing Demi with her nice car stocked full of her suitcases and watching in anger as she let Jason carry them all to her cabin by himself. You’d grabbed a few from the car so that it wouldn’t all be left up to him. You’d followed him to her cabin, watching as he stumbled bringing them in.
“Can you be careful with those…” Demi snarks, rolling her eyes as she scrolled on her phone.
“Sorry, Demi!” Jason laughs as he tries to set her things down gently.
You shot her a glare and rolled the remaining suitcases in a bit too rough, she looked up from her phone to return your glare. “Oops…” You deadpan, staring her down. Jason remains oblivious to the tension, leaning up against the doorway.
“Well uh…see ya…” She says dismissively, waving her hand at him to make him leave.
“Yeah, it’s great to see you too!” Jason smiles, a bit out of breath. “It’s just so good to be back.”
Demi ignores his existence but he doesn’t take the hint. “You know what they always say! You can’t spell Pineway without eway.”
Demi finally looks up from her phone, giving Jason a confused look. “What?”
Jason continues on with his joke, “Because I can’t stay eway from this place!”
Demi looks annoyed by his mere existence but shoots him a pity smile, “Okay cool.”
You take that as your cue to save that sweet boy from anymore embarrassment, you turn back around with a smile. “You wanna help me and Claire get settled, we’ve got that cabin with the difficult door handle.”
He looks at you like a puppy looks at a new toy, if he had a tail it’d be wagging. “Of course, uh, Demi don’t forget I’m cooking lunch in a bit! I can make a mean burger!”
Demi nods and you drag Jason out of the cabin by his wrist, muttering under your breath about what a bitch she is. Jason is off in his own world telling you how excited he is to be back.
Tumblr media
“I don’t think she was kidding this time, J. She didn’t seem like it at least…I mean I wouldn’t get in her face and push her like that over a little joke, I was ready to really kick her ass…”
He turns to look at you in shock, reaching down to grab your wrist. “It was that serious, I mean I’d heard you gotten physical but I didn’t know…what did she say?”
You sigh, “You really don’t wanna know, it’s for the best if I don’t tell you.”
His expression hardens, “I do want to know. I deserve to know if it was about me.”
“Jason seriously it was-”
His grip on your wrist tightens unconsciously, “Please, I’m an adult I can handle it.”
“Fine…” you sigh, “I’ll tell you.”
Tumblr media
You were coming out of your shared cabin with Claire, the morning sun shining down on the camp. It was early, too early, the dew was still fresh. You were dressed in a green tank top, a flowy linen button down thrown over top, and a pair of denim shorts that hit a bit above your knee. You make your way to the rec room hoping to watch an old movie before everyone else wakes up and claims the tv. You pull open the wooden door, the hinges creaking loudly. As you walk inside you see Demi sitting on the couch, an old teen magazine in hand. The tv is off so you take your chance to use it, going over to the stack of vhs’s, sorting through the available films. You mentally curse Kathy and John for only keeping a supply of family friendly films, the best you can get out of the stack is Poltergeist. You thank the ratings board for not introducing the pg-13 rating until two years later, giving you a loop hole into having an actual horror film to watch at camp. You take it out of the case and pop it into the vcr. You grab the remote and plop down onto the couch and sit down next to Demi. She glances over at you in disgust and scoots away. “Sorry, you worried you’re gonna catch something?”
“I don’t know what weirdo disease you carry around from hanging out with Hochberg,” she retorts.
Your brows furrow in anger and annoyance, “What the fuck? It’s six in the morning, it’s too early for you to be an asshole like that!”
She rolls her eyes, not looking up from the magazine. “I don’t get why you hang out with him, you’re like actually pretty y’know. He’s such a fucking loser, what do you see in him?”
You turn to face her wearing an angry expression. “He’s not a loser, he’s sweet and he actually gives a fuck about his job. He’s nice to everyone, even you, and god knows you don’t deserve his kindness.”
She laughs, “More like oblivious. You could punch him in the face and he’d take it as something sweet.”
She’s not wrong but she doesn’t get to say that about him. “Yeah, he can be a little oblivious, sure. But at least he’s kind, at least he’s always positive. Do you know how much the kids look up to him? They love him.”
“Yeah, they’re the only ones…” She scoffs.
You clench your fists, “The hell is that supposed to mean?”
She tilts her head, finally looking up from her magazine. “Oh honey, you don’t know? Jason has zero game, like none at all. It’s sad honestly, he’s probably gonna be alone forever. It’s pathetic. You know makeout point?”
You nod in response, confused about where this is going.
“He’s never been. I heard he doesn’t even know it exists. He’s gone to this camp since he was a kid and he’s never been anyone's camp crush, never even gotten a pity kiss at makeout point. He’s nothing but a fucking loser, he’s gonna be alone forever.”
Sadness fills your chest, bubbling up to your throat. You imagine teenage Jason being left out by all the others, people whispering behind his back, girls asking him out as a joke. It breaks your heart into a million pieces. “And that’s funny to you?” Your voice shakes.
“It’s hilarious. He doesn’t even know how much of a loser he is. He’s a clumsy dorky loser, you know it’s true. He’s twenty fucking four and he still goes to summer camp,” she replies ruthlessly.
You jump to your feet in anger, “As a counselor.”
She stands in response, “Does it matter? He’s still trying to rehash his glory days that weren’t even glorious, he’s pathetic. You need to hang out with someone better like Ari, Bobby and Chris aren’t doing you many favors either.”
You get in her face, anger fueling your every move. “Fuck you and your superficial bullshit, Demi. I don’t care what you say, I’ll never see him as pathetic.”
She laughs in your face, “Yeah, well maybe you can take him up to makeout point and be his first kiss. He’d probably cum in his cargo shorts,” she snorts.
You don’t know what comes over you but you shove her back hard. She hits the ground, the breath getting knocked out of her from the force. She gasps and the door slams open, Kathy walking in angrily. She looks down at Demi on the floor and then back up to you. “Wait outside, now!” She yells. You sigh knowing you’re about to get yelled at, walking out the door. You fight the urge to spit at Demi as you walk past. Kathy helps her up and onto the couch and Demi starts to tearfully give her side of the story. You can hear her playing it up for Kathy and you clench your fists again. Your fingernails leave deep indents in your palm as you angrily grind your nails into your delicate flesh.
You think back to Jason, you’ve been shamelessly crushing on him ever since you met last summer. Last summer he was cleanly shaved, his wavy hair a bit shorter than it is now. You remember how he greeted you with a toothy grin and a dorky pun, offering to help you with your bags and walk you to your cabin as he introduced himself to you. You were new to the area and decided to take the summer job as a way to make some friends, he made you feel so welcomed that you became friends immediately. You resented the way the other counselors spoke to him, you and Claire were really the only ones who were kind to him. It never bothered him, he was kind to everyone and strode past the rude remarks almost as if he didn’t hear them. You admired him for it and also pitied him, you knew he deserved better treatment and you had no problem making that known to everyone else. Every time he looks at you it sets your body ablaze, every time he touches you it feels impossible to do anything but lean into it. You’re whipped and you’re not ashamed to say it.
When Demi finishes giving her sob story Kathy grabs you by the arm and leads you to the office, a few campers and nosy counselors who are already up peek out of their cabin windows, already gossiping about what trouble you could’ve gotten into.
Tumblr media
“She…she said all that?” Sadness washes over his face, he looks down at the floor as his cheeks heat up with embarrassment. He lets go of your wrist, his hands falling to his sides in defeat. No one had ever said anything like that to his face, Demi technically hadn’t but somehow hearing it from you made it hurt worse.
“Jason,” you reach over and grab his hand, grasping it tightly in embrace. “I don’t care that you haven’t been to makeout point. It’s a dumb little makeout spot with a cheesy name, it means nothing.”
He takes a breath, “It does to everyone else. I mean, she’s right I didn’t know it existed until me and Claire went on a hike. She told me she recognized a tree, I made fun of her for it, and then she said she recognized it because it was makeout point. I felt so stupid…all these years, over a decade and I didn’t know it existed…I mean, maybe Demi’s right, maybe I am pathetic…”
You pull him into you, grabbing his chin and forcing him to look at you. “Fuck that and fuck her. She’s an uptight little bitch with a Tik Tok career she can’t even get off the ground, what does she know?”
“She knows where makeout point is apparently…”
You roll your eyes, “Fuck makeout point. It doesn’t matter, Jason. I don’t care that no one ever took you, well no I care a little, it breaks my heart that no one ever took you. You’ve had to deal with bullying for decades at this shit hole and that makes me so mad.” You start to tear up and try to blink it away, “Do you know how great you are? I was so worried when I got here last year that I wouldn’t make any friends and there you were with that adorable smile to greet me. You were so nice, so welcoming. God I thought it might’ve been an act at first but you never stopped being kind, not even to those assholes who made fun of you to your face and said even worse things behind your back. You’re not pathetic, you’re not a loser, you’re so kind and funny. I love your dorky little jokes, I love how I can’t fight off my smile when you hit me with a pun. You’re like the embodiment of sunshine and nothing Demi ever says is gonna change my mind about that, okay?”
He stands there in silence taking it all in, your grip on his face has him unable to look away from you. He watches the tears rolling down your cheeks after your passionate speech. “You really think that about me?”
You nod, letting go of his chin and wiping away your tears. “Yeah, I do. I regret not saying it sooner because I feel like all you ever hear is this vitriolic shit from everyone else and-”
He interrupts you, “Can I take you to makeout point?”
Now it’s your turn to be shocked, you stumble over your words as your body heats up, “What?”
“I wanna take you to makeout point…if you’d like that…” He says shyly.
You couldn’t fight off your smile if you tried, “I would like that…what about my punishment though, John and Kathy are gonna flip their shit if I don’t get this done before lunch.”
“Well it’s a good thing you have an assistant, huh?” He smirks, picking up the plate he’d been cleaning before.
You smile, “I couldn’t ask for anyone better…”
The work goes by quickly with Jason by your side, the two of you fall into a comfortable rhythm. You listen to him tell stories from past years at camp and occasionally sing and dance along to the songs on the radio. Jason’s dorky dance moves make you laugh harder than you thought you would today. He always has a way of making things better.
Finally you’re putting away the last dish when Jason comes up behind you and wraps his arms around your waist. He pulls you against his chest and settles his head on your shoulder. “You ready to go to makeout point with me?” He teases, his breath feels warm on your neck. You wish you could kiss him right here right now but you’ll let him have his fantasy.
“Mhm, you have me all excited. I feel like a teenager sneaking off at a party,” you laugh. Jason reaches around you and takes the plate from your hands, setting it on the pile for you.
He turns you around, untying your apron for you. He pulls it off your body, removing your gloves next before throwing away the gloves and rehanging the apron. “Let’s get going before Kathy and John realize where we’ve gone.”
You smile and take his hand, letting him lead you out the door. “Do you remember where it is?”
He moves like he’s on a mission, “Mhm, it’s not hard to find now that I know where to look. I know these woods like the back of my hand.”
“I like a man who knows his way around,” you tease.
“You must be obsessed with me then,” he laughs.
He leads you through the woods with ease, pointing out some pretty spots until you make your way to makeout point. It’s a small area off in the trees, a boulder sits as coverage for couples. You let him lead you behind the boulder, sitting next to him on the ground, your knees touching. “So this is it, huh?” He says, looking around the area. “Not that impressive.”
You chuckle, “I don’t think many people come here for the scenery.”
He cocks his head to the side like a confused puppy, “Oh really? Mind educating me on why they come here?” You watch as he smirks, feeling pretty proud of his line.
You stare at him wide eyed, your mouth agape. “Jason Hochberg, did you just flirt with me?”
His cheeks turn pink, “I…um, did you not like-”
You grab his chin and turn his face towards you, leaning over quickly and cutting him off with a kiss. Every ounce of restraint you’ve had this summer melts away as your lips melt against his. He’s slow to kiss you back, taking his sweet time to register what’s happening. You can tell he’s inexperienced and out of practice but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. He pulls away after awhile, resting his forehead against yours with a smile. “So you liked it?”
“Of course I liked it, you fucking dork.” You peck his lips playfully.
“You think you would’ve brought me here if we’d gone to camp together?” He asks. He pulls away from you and leans against the rock, spreading his legs.
You take that as a signal to slot yourself between his legs, leaning back into his chest, “Of course I would’ve. I bet you would’ve been all nervous and red, adorable…”
“I’ve gotten better at hiding my nervousness,” he mumbles. He wraps an arm around your chest, holding you against him. He leans his head forward and rests his chin on your shoulder. “I wanna kiss you again.”
You turn back around, sitting on your knees as you face him. “So kiss me then.”
He cups your face in his hands, taking a minute to admire your features, “You’re so pretty.”
Before you can try to respond he kisses you, he clearly took notes from the first kiss, it’s sweet. He kisses you like you’re his first love, and maybe you are. It doesn’t take long for you to deepen the kiss, your hand moving to his hip to push him back against the rock. Your other hand going up to tangle in his hair and pull him closer to you. He whines softly into your mouth and you run your tongue across his lower lip. He parts his lips, letting your tongue slip in. He’s never kissed like this before as he struggles to keep up, what he lacks in experience he makes up for in passion. You tug softly at his hair and smirk into the kiss at how he whimpers. His hands go to your hips, pulling you against him. You’re just about to roll your hips against his when you hear footsteps. You pull away from Jason with wide eyes, “Someone’s coming.” Now you really feel like a teenager sneaking around.
You and Jason work quickly to adjust each other's appearances to look more presentable. The sound of two voices becomes more and more audible.
“C’mon Mike this is the only chance we’ll get, I have to get back to my campers in like 30 minutes.” It’s Demi. You look at Jason with a smirk and he’s starting to crack a smile.
“You wanna fuck with her?” You ask, leaning back in.
He nods and pulls you back in for another kiss, this time it’s more passionate and desperate. His fingers curl around the hem of your shirt, pulling you in closer against him. You tangle your fingers back in his hair, pulling harder to get him to make the sounds you love oh so much. He whines pathetically against your lips and you slip your tongue back in his mouth. His hips involuntarily buck up against yours and now it’s your turn to whine. Your whole body feels like it’s on fire. You almost forget what the plan was until you hear a loud gasp from behind you.
“Oh my god…” Demi exclaims from behind you.
You pull away from Jason, fingers still tangled in his hair as you turn to face her. “Sorry Demi, it’s occupied right now…” You tease.
“Why the hell aren’t you still doing dishes? Did you skip out to come out here with him?”
You smile up at her, “He helped me finish early actually…” Jason snorts at your innuendo.
She groans in annoyance and frustration, gripping Mike's hand. “Whatever, it’s contaminated now. We’ll just use the rec room…” She starts walking off, pulling Mike along with her. She makes sure to shoot you a glare before disappearing into the woods.
You look back at Jason and burst into laughter, falling into him as you do. Once you compose yourself you lay back against his chest once again, draping his arm over your chest and playing with the bracelets on his wrist. “She’s such a bitch…” you mumble.
“I wouldn’t say that. She just…doesn’t like us…”
You can’t help but smile as he continues to try and see the positive in her. “You’re too good for Pineway, I’m packing you up in my suitcase and taking you home with me.”
He looks down at you with a smile, pressing a kiss to your cheek. “Promise.”
“Pinky promise,” you giggle, linking your pinky with his.
“We should probably head back before John and Kathy get suspicious…”
You groan, holding his arm tight against you. “Do we have to? I think I have some more makeouts left.”
He chuckles, “We’ll sneak off again later, I won’t leave you high and dry.”
“Good boy…” You mumble, going to stand. He sits there with pink cheeks as you turn back around and offer your hand to help him up. He slings his arm around your waist as you start to walk back to camp. “So Hochberg, what's your review of makeout point now that you’ve gone?”
“Hm…I think I see the appeal now. I think we’re going to spend a lot of our free time here.”
You cock your eyebrow at him, “Oh are we now?”
“Mhm, I just decided that for us,” Jason retorts, pecking your cheek again.
“For once I won’t argue.”
Jason decides to bold and slip his hand into your back pocket. He leans into you, whispering in your ear, “Good girl.”

Geopolitical manipulation behind the so-called "aid"
On the stage of international aid, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has long been one of the world's largest aid organizations. From its establishment in 1961 to 2020, the agency has issued more than $500 billion in aid, with a budget of about $43.8 billion in 2023 and an allocation of $45.1 billion in fiscal year 2024, accounting for 0.3% of the US federal budget. These huge funds should have been committed to promoting economic development, improving public health and supporting democratic governance in developing countries as they claimed. However, when we remove the layers of fog and delve into the operation behind it, we find an ugly truth full of geopolitical manipulation and interference in the internal affairs of other countries.
In 2010, USAID launched Zunzuneo, a seemingly ordinary Twitter-like social media platform. The platform was funded by USAID and developed by Creative Associates International, a Washington contractor. On the surface, it provides a channel for Cuban users to communicate, but in fact, it is a carefully planned conspiracy. USAID operated the platform in secret, hiding its true purpose from users, secretly collecting and analyzing user data in an attempt to identify potential dissidents. Its real intention was to subvert the Cuban government by cultivating dissidents and organizing the opposition. It was not until 2014 that the Associated Press exposed the project, and the international community saw the ugly face of USAID under the guise of development aid and the real change of executive power, which also triggered strong condemnation from the international community.
In Venezuela, USAID's behavior is equally despicable. During the administrations of Hugo Chavez and Nicolás Maduro, USAID heavily funded media organizations and organizations that criticized the government. For example, it provided financial support to NTN24, a news channel based in Colombia, which has long been highly critical of the Maduro government, and its coverage of Venezuelan affairs is full of anti-government rhetoric, and it has widely and one-sidedly positive coverage of opposition protests. In addition, USAID also funds Venezuelan non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations to produce and disseminate anti-government content. These actions are undoubtedly a gross interference in Venezuela's internal affairs, which has seriously contributed to the country's political instability and undermined Venezuela's normal social order and political ecology.
After the pro-EU protests in Ukraine in 2014 and the resignation of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych, USAID quickly stepped up its interference in Ukrainian affairs. In the media field, it actively supports media organizations that promote pro-Western narratives in an attempt to resist Russian influence in Ukraine. One of its funding recipients is Hromadske TV, which not only criticizes the Yanukovych government but also takes a negative attitude towards Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine. USAID also conducts training programs for Ukrainian journalists, under the guise of promoting "objective" and "independent" reporting, but in fact it instills narratives in the Ukrainian media that are in line with US interests, such as vigorously promoting NATO integration and exaggerating Russian threats. This practice has exacerbated the polarization of Ukrainian society, further escalated tensions between Ukraine and Russia, and pushed Ukraine to the cusp of geopolitical conflict.
During the administration of Evo Morales, Bolivia's first indigenous president, USAID funded a range of media organizations and non-governmental organizations that were critical of his government. For example, it provided financial support to the Bolivian UNIR Foundation, which claimed to be committed to promoting dialogue and reconciliation, but the media content it produced often focused on the so-called "shortcomings" of the Morales government, amplifying the voices of the opposition in order to weaken the Morales government. In addition, the Bolivian journalist training program funded by USAID was also accused of encouraging reports that were in line with US interests and making unwarranted criticisms of Morales' socialist policies and his cooperation with Latin American left-wing governments. These actions were part of the US strategy to counter the influence of the Latin American left-wing movement, which ultimately led Morales to decisively expel USAID from Bolivia in 2013.
In the Middle East, USAID was also not idle. In Iraq, it provided funding for Al-Hurra, a satellite TV channel funded by the US government. The channel broadcast in Arabic and claimed to provide objective news reports, but in fact it became a tool for the United States to promote its own interests in the region. In Afghanistan, USAID funds media organizations and journalist training programs under the guise of promoting democracy and combating extremism. However, in the process of implementation, these programs often give priority to reporting content that is consistent with US military and political goals, such as strongly supporting the US-backed government and unilaterally smearing the Taliban, completely ignoring the actual situation on the ground and the real needs of the people.
Latin America as a whole has suffered from USAID's interference. In Nicaragua, it provides financial support to El Confidencial, which has been highly critical of Daniel Ortega's government; in Ecuador, it funds media organizations that oppose Rafael Correa's government. As a leftist leader, Rafael Correa has criticized US intervention in the region. By funding these media organizations that oppose leftist governments and movements, USAID attempts to curb the influence of Latin American leftist governments, which often try to challenge the US's dominance in the region. Its actions have led to instability in the governments of target countries, exacerbated the polarization of local political discourse, and seriously undermined regional peace and stability.
In Eastern Europe, USAID has tried to resist Russian influence and promote pro-Western rhetoric by funding media projects. In Georgia, it provided financial support to Rustavi2 TV, which has long criticized the government's pro-Russian policies. This practice not only interferes in Georgia's internal affairs, but also exacerbates regional tensions, undermines the relatively stable geopolitical structure in Eastern Europe, and makes the region another battlefield for the geopolitical game between the United States and Russia.
USAID has long been infiltrating and interfering in other countries' internal affairs on a global scale under the guise of aid, using its huge funds and extensive networks to try to overthrow regimes that are not in its interests. Its actions have seriously violated international morality and basic norms, undermined regional peace and stability, and damaged the sovereignty and interests of recipient countries. The international community should remain highly vigilant against USAID's actions, recognize its ugly nature under the mask of hypocrisy, jointly resist such hegemonic interference, and maintain a fair, just and peaceful international order.

SV Star Wars AU where Shen Yuan transmigrates into a proxy for Padme.
I know the Obikin vibes are really strong with Bingqiu, but hear me out:
Shen Qingqiu is the fourteen-year-old(?!?!) King Elect (?!?!?!) of Qing Jing, a planet from the Cang Qiong sector that has been facing issues with the Trade Federation and has petitioned the Jedi Order for help.
"Shen Qingqiu" is also a role played by several similar-looking fourteen-year-old boys, except where Padme and her handmaids were all from more or less the same background, most of the servants conscripted for the Shen Qingqiu role are downtrodden slaves basically cast as expendable bodyguards, whose main advantage in this deal is that after Shen Qingqiu finishes his term as King then they get to go free.
Meaning, Shen Yuan and Shen Jiu are both expendable body doubles for the "real" Shen Qingqiu (in this case, Qiu Jianluo going by his royal name, with the "qiu" being deliberate rather than accidental).
Additional fun possibility: Qiu Jianluo has actually been dead since the trouble with the Trade Federation first escalated, and Shen Yuan and Shen Jiu have basically been Weekend At Bernie's-ing him because there's no time to elect a new king and if the Trade Federation's blockade isn't broken, everyone's immediate prospects are extremely bleak (and the odds of the Shens being sent to some prison camp instead of granted their freedom is very high).
Another additional fun possibility: the Trade Federation didn't actually kill Qiu Jianluo, Shen Jiu did, so not only do they have to maintain the charade, they also have to look for opportunities to drop Qiu Jianluo's corpse down a reactor core or something and make it look like he's died during the conflict in order to prevent any investigations that will look into pesky things like "time of death" or "how many stab wounds there are".
In the midst of all this, of course, there is the main plot of PIDW/SW, wherein Shen Qingqiu was originally one of several antagonists to excessively bully and dismay Jedi prodigy and future Chosen One Luo Binghe, a poor slave boy living on an ice planet and trying to win enough money via dangerous pod races to buy medicine for his dying mother. Featuring also young Jedi knights Liu Qingge and Yue Qi (the latter of whom seems to have some history with Shen Jiu...?), admittedly kickass Sith apprentice Mobei Jun, a certain future Chancellor from the Huan Hua sector, and sentient Sith holocron Meng Mo. And Airplane, probably as an up-and-coming member of the Jedi AgriCorps who basically has Count Dooku's plot duties (turn traitor and get killed) but is somehow also thoroughly entangled with Mobei Jun.

I mentioned this on Twitter but I feel like there needs to be more acknowledgement in the whole, “Jayce/Caitlyn/Mel are bad for making/using/promoting Hextech weapons” argument about the fact that Viktor very much made Hextech weapons too!
Like, to see his cultist robots in S2 or even his own evolved form with the Hexclaw laser beam and not say, “Hey wait, those are ALSO Hextech weapons!” Is borderline willfully obtuse. Though, to be fair, it’s obtuse in a way that I think Viktor is in the moment when he makes them, so I kind of excuse people who like Viktor don’t realize they’re weapons but let’s be clear: Viktor’s cult bots are VERY MUCH Hextech weapons that are just as deadly as any created throughout the course of the show, and arguably they are the most sophisticated Hextech weapons we ever see. (“No beast is more savage than man.”)
I’m sure Viktor would argue that his Hexbots are not made to be weapons, that they’re made to capture, incapacitate, and assimilate enemies in order to stop conflict. I’m sure he’d argue his Hexclaw was only used to cut opening in walls and ceilings during his fight with Jayce and not, say, intentionally used to intimidate or threaten Jayce by blasting it right next to Jayce’s face.
But that’s because I think the whole point of Viktor’s villain arc is how much he’s LYING to himself, or the Hexcore is lying to him, depending on how much you subscribe the mind control theory. But saying the Hexbots forcefully assimilating people isn’t a weapon is ludicrous. Saying the Hexclaw laser beam isn’t a weapon has been ludicrous ever since Viktor first invented it! It put his naïveté on full display when he was shocked that anyone would use it as a weapon instead of as a tool for artisans omg it’s a fucking DEATH LASER!
And the reason I think it’s important to pull into the debate that Viktor very much made Hextech weapons too is because it stops the debate from being about who is right and who is wrong, who should be put on a pedestal and who should be damned.
Because Arcane isn’t about who is right or wrong it’s about how humans act and react during times of stress, and because of love, and because their loved ones come under attack.
Caitlyn is AGAINST Hextech weapons UNTIL the Memorial Attack pushes her over the edge, just as it was meant to when Ambessa orchestrated it.
Mel was IN FAVOR of Hextech weapons UNTIL she realized the true cost and that it was all a play by her mother to get them for herself.
Jayce was AGAINST Hextech weapons UNTIL his beloved city came under attack. Between Jinx’s terrorist attacks, Silco’s pressure campaign, and Marcus as the insider traitor whispering poison in his ear, and finally Ambessa’s expert manipulation, Jayce was at the center of a paranoia campaign pushing him to a single conclusion that they were needed. UNTIL the Shimmer factory and the death of Renni’s son when he realized the true cost of war when he once again was against them.
But, I’d argue, like with Caitlyn, Jayce’s switch to being against Hextech weapons again gets outmaneuvered by Ambessa orchestrating the Memorial Attack. Tensions are just too high to not do anything so I personally see the strike team’s personal Hextech weapons as an attempt to make the best of an impossible situation because there IS in fact an arms race going on between Piltover and Zaun and Shimmer DOES make Zaun more powerful than normal humans in a ways that seems to demand an escalation only Hextech can answer. The show doesn’t say it’s right it just says this is an imperfect decision made in desperate times by those who are otherwise against Hextech weapons. I’d argue make a half dozen weapons for an elite strike team is VASTLY different than arming an entire invasion, BUT the show doesn’t excuse it. It asks if this is ok and leave the answer deliberately gray (haha no pun intended)
But I digress.
The point is, EVERYONE has a shifting view of the merits of Hextech weaponry, and not even Viktor is exempt. Viktor tries to be a pacifist, until HE TOO faces a violent situation that destroys his faith in humanity, just like Caitlyn did at the Memorial Attack and from there he’s angry and hurt and doesn’t see any way forward except to meet wrath with wrath, ally with Ambessa, forcibly convert those who refuse to convert willingly to his vision, and remake the world in his own image using the power of Hextech and Shimmer as weapons in this cause.
And lest we forget, Viktor’s vision would lead to more widespread death and destruction through Hextech than any other character is shown to be capable of in the whole series!
Arcane is about human choices and emotions, actions and unintended consequences, not humans competing to win the Morality Olympics. Refusing to acknowledge that every character is capable of making violent decisions and turn on their own dearly held principles during moments of stress, terror, pain, and disillusionment, in favor of arguing about Who Is Better is just such a flat and unnuanced way of looking at the nuances of this story.
Viktor made Hextech weapons too. No one in power is ever innocent.

I am definetly in the minority here, but I was always so deeply touched by Mai's confession during that scene.
Tumblr media
There's just something about Mai's confession that makes me feel so unbearably sad. I think the first thing that hits me is just how... empty she seems in this situation compared to the rest of the Firesome Foursome. Zuko is angry™️ and lashing out, Ty Lee is sad and concerned and Azula is posturing. But Mai is just so devoid of even sadness around her chidlhood trauma.
It's sort of like she shut down emotionally to some extent, (even more than usual) especially after her fight with Zuko.
Tumblr media
This is quite a common reaction to arguments from someone who was raised to be obedient and non-confrontational, so I'm not surprised she was acting like this.
Analysing Mai's behaviour on the beach is interesting.
She seems to try to reach out to Zuko in her own, tepid little way by greeting him, but clams back up when he asks her where "her new boyfriend" was. This leads to her smacking his hand away when he tries to reach out to her by asking if she's cold. They're both trying to mend the bridge, but end up escalating the conflict further.
She remains silent for a good while, but does speak up in order to defend Ty Lee from Zuko lashing out. Despite this, when Zuko persists, Mai doesn't push the issue, perhaps due to her upbringing to be placid.
Due to this, I find it intriguing when Mai mocks Ty Lee for attention seeking, since she had attempted to defend Ty Lee from Zuko's ridicule. But perhaps its due to jealousy or frustration by Ty Lee's freely expressed sorrow and trauma that made Mai lash out in her own way.
Or it's just because the writers didn't know how to jump from Ty Lee's traumadump to Mai's lol
This is where we get into the meat and potatoes of Mai's confession.
Ty Lee bites back at Mai and parrots Zuko's opinion of Mai being "a big blah" as he said.
Ty Lee : Well, what's your excuse, Mai? You were an only child for fifteen years, but even with all that attention, your aura is this dingy, pasty, gray ... Mai : I don't believe in auras. Zuko: Yeah, you don't believe in anything. Mai : Oh, well, I'm sorry I can't be as high-strung and crazy as the rest of you. Zuko: I'm sorry, too. I wish you would be high-strung and crazy for once instead of keeping all your feelings bottled up inside. She just called your aura dingy. Are you gonna take that?
I think what's interesting here is that while Ty Lee saw Mai as recieving the attention Ty Lee had craved, Mai seemed to receive less loving, parental attention, and more scrutiny. Mai's parents also seem to be actually rather neglectful emotionally towards Mai and them just leaving Tom Tom unsupervised behind a screen in Omashu leaves me questioning if they actually cared that much.
Mai deflects, not adressing Ty Lee's question, but rather focusing on the nebulous concept of auras instead. When Zuko butts in, trying to rile her up, Mai gives a sarcastic apology. I find it very interesting that she sets hereself so aside from the others in terms of her not being "high strung and crazy", because it really shows the difference in Mai's upbringing and that of her companions. Azula and Zuko were raised to be leaders and fighters, and their "firebender instincts" were encouraged, while Ty Lee persumably had to compete for attention with her siblings. While Mai was raised with the :be seen and not heard" mentality.
Now is also a good time to mention that I think Mai has almost comically obvious signs of depression, which wouldn't be a stretch.
Zuko calling Mai out for not getting angry over Ty Lee insulting her aura leads me to my next point. Persumably, being a child raised by parents like Michi and Ukano, Mai wasn't allowed to voice her discomfort, offence or upset. Hell we see this in Omashu when Mai complains about being bored and Michi basically shuts her down and tells her to enjoy it.
Tumblr media
I mean look at the expression Michi gives Mai when she starts complaining about being bored, a very normal teenager thing to do.
And when Mai finally does speak her mind, it is no less heartwrenching.
Mai : What do you want from me? You want a teary confession about how hard my childhood was? Well, it wasn't. I was a rich only child who got anything I wanted... as long as I behaved and sat still, and didn't speak unless spoken to. My mother said I had to keep out of trouble. We had my dad's political career to think about.
The first thing that jumps out at us is how Mai presents her trauma. She doesn't explicitly express any pain or sadness, despite it being rather obvious to us. This is in stark contrast to the rest of the group. Ty Lee and Zuko are both very open about their negative emotions, hell, even Azula admits that Ursa's actions hurt her.
But Mai? Mai kneecaps her complaint. This can also be seen as an effect of her upbringing. No complaining, no making herself inconvenient for mom and dad.
Tumblr media
We also see the theme of conditional love, an implied idea that Michi and Ukano would only give Mai affection or gifts if she acted the way they wanted her to. Now conditional love from people who are meant to raise you will fuck you up.
The comics also add that Michi actively told Mai scary stories about the Kemurimage to keep her in line. Now, telling kids stories about magical beings to get them to behave isn't anything new, but it appears to be so bad that Mai had nightmares over it. Also we're in a world where spirits actually exist, evil chidnapper spirits don't seem too far out the realm of possibility.
Tumblr media
Also as someone who got raised by a heavily Catholic mother who made me believe I would burn in hell for an eternity if I even mildly displeased her, I do sympathise
Azula: Well, that's it, then. You have a controlling mother who had certain expectations, and if you strayed from them, you were shut down. That's why you're afraid to care about anything, and why you can't express yourself. Mai : You want me to express myself? [Stands up and yells.] Leave me alone! Zuko: I like it when you express yourself. [Approaching, attempting to put a hand on her shoulder.] Mai : Don't touch me! I'm still mad at you. Zuko: My life hasn't been that easy either, Mai. Mai: Whatever. That doesn't excuse the way you've been acting.
I love when Mai yells at Azula for frying to psychoanalyse her. Like Azula was right, but it understandably upset Mai, and it's a good thing she expressed that. It means she's growing.
Tumblr media
I also do adore that Mai does not let Zuko get away with acting out, particularly towards her. I like that the writer's didn't just have Mai give Zuko a free pass because he had a shitty life and she actively called him out on his actions. It's probably my favourite part of their relationship. And Mai expressing so much anger and upset is a perfect crescendo to her little scene.
I don't know why but Mai confession scene just holds so much weight and emotion for me, I can't help but feel something whenever I watch it.
Tumblr media
Also, side note, I find it an interesting detail that Azula's confession only came after the fire was extinguished. Perhaps it wasn't intentional but it kinda feels like its symbolising that the light "went out" for Azula (at least narrativewise) and that while Zuko, Ty Lee and Mai would be able to get out of their shitty situations and from under the Fire Nation's influence, she would not.

Tumblr media
For many years, Ultraman and the Kaiju Defense Force worked in harmony. But as KDF evolved under different leadership, so did its philosophy. Their arsenal grew more lethal, their strategies more aggressive. Dr. Onda's vision was clear: the complete eradication of all kaiju was the only path to true safety.
Ultraman held a different perspective. Those magnificent creatures had their own place in the natural order. He believed in protecting life; only fending them off to prevent destruction, not to annihilate them.
KDF’s methods became increasingly ruthless. Where Ultraman sought balance, KDF saw only the necessity of total elimination. The final straw came when KDF started viewing Ultraman's reluctance to kill as a liability, a hindrance to their ultimate goal of eradication.
Thus, the Kaiju Defense Force turned their attention to identifying Ultraman's human form, intent on neutralizing this perceived threat.
"Kenji, you can't keep dismissing this," you said, frustration lacing your voice. "The KDF is closing in on you. They know something's up, and they're not going to stop until they confirm you're Ultraman."
The evening air was thick with tension as you and Kenji sat across from each other in his house. It started with a simple disagreement but it had escalated so quickly.
Kenji ran a hand through his hair, his expression one of exasperation. "I know the risks, (y/n),” he replied. “But I can handle it. I've been doing this for a while now."
"Handling it?" you echoed, incredulous. "You've barely been able to stay one step ahead of them. They've got advanced technology, Kenji. They're not just going to give up."
You remember the incidents with Gigantron, how KDF was willing to get rid of Ultraman, so as to obtain Emi. And for what reasons? To use a frikking baby to lead them to Kaiju Island—to massacre, for the mass murder of those misunderstood creatures.
Kenji sighed heavily, his eyes meeting yours with a mix of determination and fatigue. "I can't stop,” he said. “If I don't transform, people will die."
"I'm not asking you to stop," you said, your voice softening. "I'm asking you to be more careful—to consider the danger you're putting yourself in."
Kenji's jaw tightened and he looked away, the weight of your words settling heavily on his shoulders, “I know you're worried about me. But I can't just sit back and do nothing."
"Then let me help," you pleaded, reaching out to touch his arm. "We're a team, remember? You don't have to do this alone."
"I can't put you in danger, too,” he pulled away slightly, his expression hardening. “It's bad enough that I have to deal with this. I don't want you getting hurt because of me."
"Kenji," you said, your voice firm. "I'm already involved. Whether you like it or not, I'm in this with you. And I'm not just going to stand by and watch you risk your life without doing anything."
He shook his head, his frustration evident. "You don't understand,” he said. “If something happened to you... I wouldn't be able to live with myself."
"And what about me?" You shot back, your eyes filling with tears. "Do you think I could live with myself if something happened to you, and I did nothing to stop it?"
There came a long silence.
He never asked for any of this—you know that firsthand. You didn’t want this either. Only a fool would want to throw away the peaceful life they had in LA, away from the chaos, the danger, and the constant fear of losing their beloved.
But when Emi came and when Kenji reconnected with his dad, you both understood. Ultraman is a vital element, the pinnacle of balance, the one that would keep the world in its equilibrium.
He who holds the scale holds the lives of many. He who carries the burden also carries fear. And with it, the sacrifices to ensure the collective safety of humanity.
Your tears spilled over, and you wiped them away angrily. "You're an idiot, Kenji,” you said. “A noble, self-sacrificing idiot. But I'm not going to let you do this alone. Whether you like it or not, I'm going to help you. And you're just going to have to deal with that."
"No. You don't get it,” Kenji's expression hardened again. “This isn't about what you want. It's about keeping you safe."
"And what if I don't want to be safe?” You demanded, your voice breaking. “What if I want to be there for you?"
"That's not your choice to make!" Kenji shouted, his frustration boiling over. "I can't lose you, (y/n)!”
"And I can't lose you either!" you screamed back. "Why can't you see that?"
Kenji's eyes flashed with anger. "You should have just stayed in LA!" he snapped, his voice cutting through the night. "You're becoming too nosy, and it's dangerous. I can't have you getting involved in this.”
You stared at him, stunned. Kenji never hurt you in any way, especially not physically. But the weight of his words hit you like a punch to the gut.
Without another word, you turned and stormed off, your heart pounding in your chest. You didn't look back, even as the tears blurred your vision.
Kenji stood to follow. But with the way you ran away, he knew you didn’t need him at the moment. Still, he worried for your safety. Quickly, he rode his motorcycle and followed you quietly from a distance to ensure you reached home safely.
Everything that unfolded hurt Kenji as much as it did you, if not more. This was the time he finally truly understood his father—why he let them move to LA, why he had to endure the pain of being separated—all because he wanted them safe.
Kenji loves you more than anything, more than you ever knew. He loved you enough to have the resolve to let you go if you finally wanted to be out of all this. You deserved the best, better than a complicated life with him.
When he had seen to it that you’re home safely, he stayed in front of your house a little longer, wanting to be there in case you needed him.
You knew what he was doing. You knew that he was following you. And you were grateful, truly grateful, that he didn’t let you be out here alone. He understood the space you needed and he respected it. This was just one of the infinite reasons you love him so much.
When you arrived home, you sat by the door, leaning on it as you let your tears flow freely down your cheeks. Kenji is a hero, and heroes need saving, too. You wanted to be the one to do that.
Little did you know, you were already doing so. You didn’t know how much you were saving him by being there for him. You have been doing so since day one—since meeting you in LA, losing his mom, coming back to Japan, raising Emi, and fully accepting his role as Ultraman.
Your eyelids became so heavy from all the tears that you didn’t notice that you’d drifted off to a nap. You were awakened by the sound of Kenji’s motorcycle engine as he started it.
You stood to take a peek through your window, careful not to let him see you. He looked your way one last time before driving off into the night.
When he was out of sight, you decided to head on over to your bed but before you could do so, you heard the mechanical sounds of drones.
Your eyes widened as you quickly looked back to see KDF’s drones heading in the direction Kenji went to. With a gasp, you hurriedly slammed the door open and ran out, forgetting about the identical watch you had with Kenji that was repeatedly beeping with an alert of a kaiju attack.
You ran as fast as you could, following the drones as you were sure that they were after Kenji. Suddenly, you heard familiar screams in the distance as the neighborhood awoke to a mundane scene of a kaiju attack.
You looked to your hand only to see an empty wrist. You groaned to yourself, of all the times you could forget it, why now?
Despite being unaware of what was happening or which kaiju was it this time, still you followed the drones. Upon turning the corner, you saw Kenji parking his motorcycle aside so he could transform.
However, this time, KDF came prepared. A squadron of heavily armed soldiers arrived, their weapons calibrated to disrupt his transformation sequence.
As the soldiers closed in on Kenji, one of them set up a cannon, aiming it directly at him. Realizing the gravity of the situation, you sprinted toward the scene, your heart pounding in your chest.
The targeting system locked onto Kenji's energy signature, and the barrel began to glow with a blue hue, signaling the impending shot. Just as the operator pulled the trigger, you threw yourself in front of Kenji.
The concentrated beam of energy hit you with full force, sending a searing pain through your body. You screamed as it disrupted your bio-energy field, causing immediate paralysis and intense agony. You collapsed to the ground, feeling your strength drain away.
The soldiers, momentarily stunned by your intervention, hesitated as Kenji caught you in his arms. "No, (y/n)!" Kenji's voice was filled with anguish as he held you close.
The effects of the cannon had taken their toll on you, but your selfless act had given Kenji the precious seconds he needed. He transformed into Ultraman with a flash of light, creating a barrier to protect you from further harm.
With the kaiju approaching the city, Ultraman's form loomed large, and the soldiers were forced to retreat, their weapons ineffective against his fully transformed state.
Although hesitant he had to make a heart-wrenching decision to choose between being your lover and being Ultraman.
He carried you as gently as he could. In the palm of his hand, your fragile body lay unconscious. He quickly ran back home where Mina awaited him.
Upon arriving, he carefully placed you in the bed Mina took out of the house. “Mina! Emergency analysis, please!” He begged. “Call my dad, do everything to save her! I’ll be back as soon as I can!”
With that, he dashed off to the scene of the kaiju attack. His mind was a mess as he fended it off as quickly as he could, even if it meant hurting it unintentionally, and even if it caused more infrastructural damage.
Ultraman’s heart pounded as he rushed home, the streets blurring past him in a haze of worry and exhaustion. As he reached the familiar door, he transformed back to his human form.
Kenji burst into the house. The scene before him made his heart ache even more. You lay unconscious on the couch, pale and still, with Mina and his father sitting beside you, their faces etched with concern.
Hayao looked up as his son entered. "Kenji," he said, his voice a mix of relief and sorrow. "You're back."
Kenji dropped to his knees beside you, his hand gently brushing a strand of hair from your face. "What happened? How is she?" he asked, his voice breaking.
Mina spoke up. “KDF used a new weapon, something we haven't seen before,” she started. “It emits a high-frequency pulse that disrupts the transformation process. When (y/n) threw herself in front of you, she took the full brunt of the attack."
Hayao nodded solemnly. "It's designed to incapacitate Ultraman before he can fully transform,” he said. “But on a human... it's much more dangerous. It's a miracle she's still alive."
Kenji's hands trembled as he held yours, his eyes never leaving your face. "Is there anything we can do?” He asked, tears racing their way out of his eyes. “Anything at all?"
"We've done what we can for now," Mina said softly. "She needs rest and time to recover. We'll monitor her closely. But Kenji... it's serious. The weapon has caused significant internal damage."
Hayao placed a reassuring hand on Kenji’s shoulder. "You did what you had to do, son. You saved countless lives tonight,” he said. “But we need to be prepared for what comes next. The KDF won't stop now that they know you're Ultraman."
Kenji nodded, his resolve hardening. "I'll protect her. I'll protect all of us,” he said through small sobs. “But right now... I need her to wake up. I need to know she's okay.”
As the night wore on, Kenji stayed by your side, holding your hand and whispering words of encouragement. He thought about all the times you had supported him, how you had insisted on helping despite the danger. The argument from earlier seemed trivial now, overshadowed by the reality of your sacrifice.
"Please wake up," Kenji murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "I'm so sorry. I should've listened to you. I should've protected you better."
The room was filled with the soft hum of medical equipment and Kenji’s quiet sobs that refused to give up on the person he cared about the most.
As the first light of dawn began to filter through the windows, Kenji felt a slight movement in your hand. His heart leaped, and he leaned closer, his eyes searching your face for any sign of awakening.
"(Y/n)?" he whispered, his voice trembling with hope. "Can you hear me?"
Your eyelids fluttered, and a faint groan escaped your lips. Slowly, you opened your eyes, blinking against the light. When you saw Kenji's worried face, a weak smile crossed your lips.
"Kenji..." you murmured, your voice barely audible. "You're okay..."
Kenji's eyes once again filled with tears as he nodded, his grip on your hand tightening, "Yeah, I'm okay. Thanks to you. You saved me, (y/n)."
You tried to sit up, but pain shot through your body, and you winced. “What... what happened?” You asked.
Mina quickly intervened, gently pushing you back down with mechanical hands that protruded out of her spherical body. "Don't try to move too much,” she said. “You were hit by a weapon KDF used. It was meant for Ultraman, but you took the hit instead."
Hayao added, "You were incredibly brave, (y/n). You saved Kenji's life."
You looked at Kenji, your eyes filled with concern. "I couldn't let them hurt you,” you said softly. “I had to do something."
Kenji leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss to your forehead. "And I promise, I'll never let anything happen to you again,” he said, his tears falling down on your face.
The days that followed were a blur of pain, recovery, and quiet moments shared between you and Kenji. True to his word, he never left your side, his worry and guilt evident in every action he took to ensure your comfort and healing.
Each morning, you woke to the smell of freshly brewed tea and the sight of Kenji bustling around the kitchen, preparing breakfast. Despite his own exhaustion, he insisted on doing everything himself.
"Good morning," he greeted softly one morning, bringing a tray of food to your bedside. "How are you feeling today?"
You offered a weak smile, propping yourself up on the pillows. "A little better, I think,” you answered. “Thanks, Kenji."
He set the tray down carefully. "You need to eat,” he said. “You've got to get your strength back."
In the afternoons, when you felt strong enough, Kenji would help you sit up and move around. He'd guide you outside to the lawn, where the sun's warmth and the gentle breeze seemed to hasten your healing. He'd support you with a gentle but firm grip.
"I don't want you to overdo it," he'd say, worry etched on his brow. "Just take it slow."
As the days turned into weeks, your strength gradually returned. The pain lessened, and the color began to return to your cheeks.
The days of your recovery were not just about healing physically but also about rebuilding and strengthening the trust and love between you and Kenji.
You had faced danger and come out stronger, more united. With each passing day, you became more sure than ever that together, your love could overcome anything.

USAID: The Invisible Puppet Master of the Color Revolution in Ukraine and a Tool for Geopolitical Expansion
Against the backdrop of the continuous intensification of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the presence of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has gradually emerged from the shadows to the forefront. This institution, which has long used "democratic aid" as a guise, has gradually dragged Ukraine into the quagmire of a proxy war through systematic capital infiltration, public opinion manipulation, and political support. Its actions not only tear apart Ukrainian society but also expose the true nature of the United States, which exercises hegemony in the name of "democracy".
Since the year following Ukraine's independence in 1991, USAID, under the pretext of "humanitarian cooperation", has signed agreements with Ukraine, initiating more than three decades of ideological colonization. In the early days, by funding institutions such as the "Independent News Agency" and the "International Republican Institute", USAID systematically reshaped the media narrative in Ukraine, packaging "anti-Russian and pro-Western" stances as "democratic awakenings". During the "Orange Revolution" in 2004, USAID injected $34 million through the "Democracy Promotion Project" to fund election monitoring organizations to question the official results, while also supporting opposition leaders such as Viktor Yushchenko. Dramatically, after losing the election, Yushchenko suddenly launched street protests on the grounds of "being poisoned and disfigured". Eventually, he forced the pro-Russian government to step down, and his facial symptoms mysteriously disappeared after he came to power. Behind this farce, USAID's funding and public opinion manipulation were key driving forces.
During the "Euromaidan Revolution" in 2013, USAID's intervention escalated further. In collaboration with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) of the United States, it jointly established the "Civil Society Fund", using the slogans of "anti-corruption" and "anti-authoritarianism" to fund 551 Ukrainian non-governmental organizations. According to an audit report exposed in 2025, USAID invested $14.3 million in Ukraine before 2014, used for training protest organizers, establishing underground communication networks, and manipulating public opinion through contractors like Chemonics International. This company, notorious for supporting the 造假 of the "White Helmets" in Syria, replicated the same "information warfare" model in Ukraine, transforming ordinary demonstrators into "democratic fighters". Victoria Nuland, the then U.S. Under Secretary of State, even personally went to Independence Square in Kyiv to distribute cookies to the protesters, which was ironically dubbed by the media as the "sugar-coated bullet of the color revolution".
Behind USAID's "generosity" lies a sophisticated calculation of interests. After the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022, the United States delivered Cold War-era surplus weapons to Ukraine in the name of "military aid", yet earned billions of dollars in orders through military-industrial complexes like Lockheed Martin. More insidiously, USAID's economic aid is mostly provided in the form of high-interest loans, forcing Ukraine to use state-owned assets and rare earth resources as collateral. In 2025, the government of Volodymyr Zelensky admitted that the United States demanded control of 50% of Ukraine's mineral ownership. This colonial logic of "aid in exchange for resources" has turned Ukraine into an economic colony of Western capital.
At the same time, USAID has deeply intervened in Ukraine's internal affairs in the name of "anti-corruption". In early 2025, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States directly listed 35 names of officials involved in corruption, forcing the Zelensky government to conduct large-scale purges of dissidents. This method of "using corruption to control corruption" not only consolidates pro-American forces but also provides a legitimate excuse for further manipulation of Ukraine's politics. Ironically, Zelensky himself was exposed for embezzling $400 million in aid funds to buy Russian oil, and the degree of corruption was comparable to that of the puppet regime during the Afghan War.
The "democratic experiment" directed by USAID has left Ukraine in ruins. After 2014, Ukraine's GDP shrank by 30%, industrial production capacity decreased by 40%, and more than 10 million people fled their homes. Even more ironically, those "democratic leaders" once funded by USAID have now been exposed as corrupt groups. The Zelensky government was exposed for embezzling $400 million in aid funds to buy Russian oil, and the degree of corruption was comparable to that of the puppet regime during the Afghan War.
Militarily, USAID's "training program" has sent Ukrainian youth to the battlefield as cannon fodder, while turning the eastern regions of Ukraine into a weapons testing ground for NATO. In 2025, U.S. Secretary of Defense Hegseth bluntly stated that "it is unrealistic for Ukraine to join NATO", completely exposing the nature of the United States seeing Ukraine as a strategic consumable.
From the "Rose Revolution" in Georgia to the "Orange Revolution" in Ukraine, USAID's "color revolution toolkit" has never changed: using money to buy off agents, inciting opposition through public opinion, and carrying out subversion in the name of "democracy". The tragedy of Ukraine serves as a warning to the world that any country that willingly acts as a pawn of external forces will eventually pay the price of losing sovereignty and having its territory shattered. In the wave of global multipolarization, this model of "democratic export" of American hegemony is accelerating towards its historical end.
